Tilgate Park Weddings YOUR VENUE YOUR WAY

OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS BEAUTIFUL WEDDING GARDEN • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • MAZE • Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats. EVENTS ARENA At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away. Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or caterer and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn. Although there’s no guarante that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

elcome to the first Your Sussex Wedding magazine for 2022! For those of you tying the knot this year, January 1st will have marked a significant milestone as you draw ever closer to the big day. How’s your planning going? If you find you’ve got a little bit of extra budget for those amazing finishing touches, you won’t want to miss one page as there’s inspiration aplenty as always. As you know, I’m going to be a bridesmaid for my friend and fellow CWM editor, Melissa, in July and it’s taken her this long to talk her other half, Dave, into booking a photo booth! This was actually thanks to another of our gorgeous colleagues, social media coordinator Beth who hired one for her big day, and we were barely out of it all evening! So, these super-cool elements are well worth looking into if you can. The other thing I’ve learned since I last spoke to you is on the topic of shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses. Speaking from experience I can tell you that for your best gals, choosing that perfect dress for the big day could be almost, if not equally, as important to them as finding yours was to you. You’ve asked them to be part of this enormous occasion in your life and in all likelihood, they’ll want to give the best account of themselves as they support you. So, inspired by the unbelievably patient and all-round diamond Melissa, my advice is this: be kind. Perhaps they’ve got body confidence issues, perhaps they’re feeling the pressure – don’t leave it to the last minute, allow them as much time as possible to make their decision. You love your bride tribe, that’s why you asked them to be by your side. If you want them to feel comfortable and enjoy the day alongside you, helping them to feel their big-day best too will go a long way towards that. Oh, and don’t forget to have bags of fun along the way! That’s all from me this issue, except to extend a very warm welcome to those of you who’ve recently said “yes” and are new to Your Sussex Wedding. I hope you feel inspired by what you find here. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

12 We’ve got a bumper crop of offers for your this issue. Don’t miss out! During the first lockdown in 2020 Your Sussex Wedding was welcomed aboard the Sussex NHS and Carers Wedding Competition as a media partner, alongside more than 30 amazing local suppliers who would all use their talents to make one couple’s wedding dreams come true. We’re superexcited to share with you the culmination of the competition, Laura and Michael’s big day.

NEW FIZZ ON THE BLOCK

Recent addition to the English sparkling wine scene Boco by House Coren is made in Sussex from top-quality English grapes using the Charmat method, making it one of the first of its kind in the UK. Just like the method used in making prosecco, the secondary fermentation that occurs under pressure creates carbon dioxide and gives the wine its natural fizz. By fermenting in a tank rather than a bottle, the wine can be released earlier, so it’s bursting with fruit-driven flavours. The majority of other homegrown bubbly uses the champagne method of doing the secondary fermentation in the bottle, so House Coren wanted to release a Charmat-method wine as it believes the style showcases the bright, fruity freshness found in English grapes and offers a more affordable alternative to the traditional method sparkling wines already out there. William Coren, managing director of House Coren says, “Boco is all about living life to the full and raising a toast to adventure. We’re delighted to debut our very first wine, which will be one of the many in our future portfolio.” William runs the vineyard in West Sussex with his family having planted 30,000 vines in May 2020. Boco by House Coren is priced at £26 a bottle. Find out more about raising a toast with a glass of locally-produced bubbly at your wedding by heading over to www.housecoren.co.uk 10

KEEPING IT REAL Bombarded with underwear ads featuring airbrushed bodies, Liberty & Love founder, Beth Kates, felt frustrated and forgotten about. She says, “I’m 50 and want to look the best I can – even on the school run! I certainly don’t relate to the unachievable images that dominate the marketing of underwear and they’re not images I want my daughter to be inspired by.” So, with no retail experience she launched her own lingerie brand for all women. “I wanted underwear that empowers me to be sexy every day, to feel good if I’m going to sleep, going to the boardroom or going on a dog walk. So, just like that, Liberty & Love was born,” Beth

continues. The company offers underwear for real women of all ages and different shapes and sizes and uses models we can all relate to. Beth has a gorgeous studio at her home in Fairwarp, near Uckfield, where she offers bridal appointments and lingerie hen parties. Here, customers can feel relaxed, be measured properly and find a range of bridal lingerie only available in the studio. We’ve partnered with Liberty & Love to offer you the chance to win a personal fitting service there along with a lovely set of lingerie or nightwear. Enter via www.your-sussex.wedding. REAL WEDDINGS

L

aura met Mike in the oh-so modern way – online. While he was attracted to her genuine and down-to-earth personality, Laura says, “I fell in love with Mike’s beautiful blue eyes and I’m not going to lie, the picture of him in his TA uniform was definitely a plus. I’ve always liked a man in uniform... who doesn’t?!” When Mike proposed in 2015 it wasn’t a surprise as he’d asked Laura to go ring shopping the week before. “It was so much fun as I got to personally choose my engagement ring,” Laura remembers. When the time came to pop the question, Mike took Laura on a romantic walk to Reculver, the beautiful church ruins on a cliff face, wine and glasses in hand. Despite being nervous he asked Laura to be his wife in the traditional way – on one knee – albeit in a puddle. During the first 2020 lockdown, an amazing group of local wedding suppliers got together to make one couple’s big-day dreams come true. Inspired by the incredible nurses, care assistants, doctors and other health professionals who risked their lives daily to help the fight against Covid-19, the Sussex NHS “Never be afraid of and Carers Wedding Competition offered the grand prize asking a silly question, of a wedding day worth in excess of £30,000. Laura is a for most of us wedding radiographer working for Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in breast cancer care, so the planning is a new couple decided to enter. In the October/November 2020 experience. Your issue of Your Sussex Wedding we announced Laura and suppliers are a fount of Mike as the winners of this awesome competition when Laura commented, “It still hasn’t sunk it. The Sussex wedding knowledge – ask away!” team have brought some sparkle and magic into our lives and we can’t wait to start planning our perfect day together. Every person who entered the competition is a superstar, and it makes me proud to be part of the NHS family.” As media partners of the competition, we’re delighted to give you the lowdown on the much-anticipated big day...

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION “Although we didn’t get to choose our venue as it was part of the competition prize, we couldn’t have been offered anywhere more perfect. We’d never have been able to afford a such a fairytale location as Cottesmore, so it was a dream,” Laura says. Its mix of modern and rustic styles along with stunning décor, a beautiful entrance and courtyard complete with fountain, really appealed to the couple. “I particularly loved the relaxed homely feel,” Laura remembers. What’s more, as the pair share a love for the great outdoors, having a lush countryside feel to the venue was important to them, so Cottesmore’s vast grounds with visiting deer and lake made it perfect. “We were even treated to a drive in our very own golf buggy for pictures, which was so much fun,” Laura tells us. As there’s ample accommodation on site, many of their guests decided to stay and the couple were able to start the party early with a lovely family meal the night before.

SETTING THE SCENE The pair decided to feature a rainbow palette to pay homage to the NHS’ work throughout the pandemic. They chose three different hand-painted floral designs on ceramic hearts as their wedding favours. These were personalised with Laura’s favourite saying as a blessing to everyone given how important these things have become over the last two years: “live, love, laugh.” The pink floral place names were designed to match the invitations and the mirror table plan tied in too bordered with various hues of pink and white flowers. Mirrors featured further in the centrepieces, as giant Martini glasses filled with coloured glass pebbles and flowers sat on top of them. “They were classy and elegant but girly. We went for rose gold and pink in the reception room as we didn’t 31

want to overthrow everything with too much blue,” Laura explains. The big-day blooms featured gorgeous loose bouquets of pink and white roses with plenty of greenery and Laura’s favourite flower, blue sea thistles. The buttonholes were single pink roses with a thistle and foliage. The ceremony room featured a semi-circular display of blue and pink flowers in mirrored vases offering a modern and elegant feel. Fresh flowers also decorated the elegant and simple wedding cake. They opted for Laura’s favourite red velvet, white chocolate and fresh raspberries with buttercream, as well as milk chocolate with chocolate orange cream. “The tasting with Clare’s Cake Boutique was such a personal experience in Clare’s own garden,” Laura reminisces. The reception space looked glam backlit with blue lighting, and a Mr & Mrs sign lit up the dancefloor as did its built-in sparkly LEDs – a dream come true for Laura. Another of the bride’s visions was brought to life in the form of the white vintage 1920s Regent Landaulette personally chauffeured by Brooklands Wedding Cars’ owner, Paul.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD A hot buffet of two homely cooked meals was served as the wedding breakfast – chilli con carne with rice or vegetable lasagne; plus a selection of cold meats, salmon and prawns, salad, chips and potatoes, and pasta. For dessert a mouth-watering choice of chocolate mousse topped with hazelnuts and apple crumble with custard was available. In the evening, the venue put on an impressive buffet spread of sandwiches, chicken drumsticks, a cheese platter and spring rolls. This was paired with a sweetie cart featuring Mike’s favourite: fizzy peaches.

LOOKING THE PART The bride wore Christina by Carolyn Anne’s Bridal Shop, a customised

32

A-line dress with a heart-shaped lace cutout detail on the back – fitting since she was the soon-to-be Mrs Hart. Laura says, “I always had reservations about bridal dress shopping, due to the fear there wouldn’t be any samples in my size and embarrassment of trying to imagine dresses without trying them on. However, this couldn’t have been further from reality when I was welcomed and looked after by Lea at Carolyn Anne’s Bridal. I only had to try on five dresses before I’d found the one.” L. Guess Jewellers in Rustington donated a £500 voucher as part of the competition prize and Laura felt like a kid in a candy store as she shopped there for her accessories! As her something old and borrowed she decided to wear a pearl necklace with heart clasp, which had been in her mother’s family for generations. “I managed to match the exact colour of the pearls to a pair of pearl earrings surrounded by Swarovski crystals, giving my elegant overall look a touch of vintage,” Laura shares. Due to an old ankle injury Laura wasn’t able to wear heels and so opted to wear a pair of ivory lace trainers with a hidden platform – “Mike is over six foot so I needed a bit of height for the pictures,” she explains. The groom and groomsmen all wore matching navy suits with waistcoats, accessorised with deep blue satin ties. Meanwhile, the bridesmaids were dressed in ocean blue A-line dresses with corseted backs and lace detail. The flowergirl wore an ivory princess-style dress with blue flowers in the netting and a blue bow at the back.

“I DO” Laura and Mike had a personalised humanist ceremony written by celebrant Jacqueline Cale. They both declared their own words of love during a particularly romantic moment and overall enjoyed a relaxed ceremony. Since the bride has an Irish background, she was keen to include her heritage and was able to incorporate a Celtic hand-binding ceremony.

REAL WEDDINGS As emotional as it was, there were moments when they had to try not to giggle as their dog Baxter, who was the ring bearer, kept growling to get their attention despite being perfectly looked after by pet chaperone Ali.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE During the ceremony a violinist played the couple’s choice of music: Ave Maria as the bride entered and He’s A Pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean as they exited as newlyweds. “Having a live violinist was wonderful. He was such a talented musician and breathtaking to listen to,” Laura tells us. During the drinks reception all assembled were entertained by a steel pan duo, which was thoroughly enjoyable. As Laura says, “It’s not your everyday sound and they had an amazing array of songs, which happily for me included a lot of Disney!” Wedding singer Jason Allen performed during the wedding breakfast. While blues and swing are his preferred genres, he went above and beyond to incorporate plenty of Disney classics and musicals numbers, leaving with a standing ovation. In fact, Laura and many other guests struggled to get through the meal as they were too busy singing along! Other entertainers on hand to wow guests throughout the day included magician Adam Smith, caricaturist David Groves and Ruby Lemon glitter face paint artists. Laura says, “Adam is just amazing. Words cannot describe how alive and professional this man can be when he performs magic. He left our guests pondering how to explain his tricks. When it comes to David, we’d never thought someone with such an innocent face could produce such hilarious artworks. Seeing peoples’ reactions to their paintings was priceless! And, originally I thought the glitter would just be a hit with the kiddies, but everyone was getting in on the act. What was even more entertaining was seeing adults arriving for breakfast the next morning still covered in it. Definitely proof of a good party!”

DJ Trevor from Night and Day Entertainment provided some fab tunes and guests danced the night away to choreographed lighting sequences. The magic mirror also went down a storm thanks to its fun props and funny pictures. The newlyweds were delighted to be presented with a copy of each photo in a guest book that each person had signed. Laura and Mike were honoured with a first dance song performance from their band Electric Feel – Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon. The night ended with a terrific bang in the form of a pyromusical to Take That’s Rule the World and a five-minute firework display, which the duo pressed the button to start.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Laura remembers, “The whole day was a fairy tale. We were extremely nervous at the beginning but once the ceremony was over the nerves were replaced with pure happiness and bliss. We were so grateful and honoured to share our special day with all our friends and family, which was only due to the kindness of the NHS Sussex Wedding Team. “For me, a standout moment was the dress reveal to my father. It was incredibly emotional and needless to say, there were tears! Working in the NHS and never being a girly girl, meant that having my make-up and hair done was a different experience for me. Looking at myself in the mirror, not only as a bride, but as a woman, I’d never felt so alive and for a change I had confidence in the person staring back at me. “The whole thing was a dream and the planning was extremely enjoyable, something that’ll stick in our memories forever. We got to meet everyone involved in the NHS Sussex Wedding Team and got to know them on a personal level. We got to hear how they’ve struggled and coped through the pandemic and are forever grateful for this team of professionals for coming forward and selflessly donating their expertise and time to the competition and cause.”

REAL WEDDINGS

BE MY

A twist of fate reunited Megan and Gavin after years apart and they tied the knot in September, 2021 Images courtesy of The Unscripted Collective

M

egan and Gavin grew up as neighbours, but their lives took them in different directions as they grew up. Years later they bumped into each other at a Valentine’s Day singles night and the rest, as they say, is history! Gav proposed at the couple’s home, 17 days after their son, Teddy, was born. He called Meg upstairs, where she found a card telling her how proud he was of her, followed by: “Teddy has something to ask you.” She glanced over at her son who was wearing a baby grow emblazoned with “Mummy, will you marry daddy?” Meg remembers,

“It was a total shock, but the most amazing way to be asked!” When it came to the venue for the big day, the pair fell in love with Cissbury Barns and its beautiful setting. Meg explains, “It had the perfect mix of day to evening locations and our guests said that being out in the fabulous courtyard felt like being on holiday. It’s a hidden gem set in the heart of the South Downs, sheltered by woodland from the Cissbury Estate.” Join us as bride Meg gives us the lowdown on their September wedding day... 37

The ceremony area was decorated with a faux blossom tree arch at the end of the aisle. This was later relocated to frame the top table. The ceremony was also styled with white lanterns lining the aisle and gypsophila tied to every other chair. In the main barn, we decorated with blossom tress, a faux greenery chandelier and a large greenery heart on the back wall, all supplied by To Have and To Hire Events.

The centrepieces featured white hydrangeas, eucalyptus and gypsophila based on round mirrors, and surrounded by gold and glass tea lights, plus one scented candle.

38

Our favours were miniature bottles of Whitley pink gin, labelled “Let the evening be-gin.”

The tablescapes included gorgeous gold cutlery, gold beaded chargers and gold-rimmed glasses. Our three-tier naked cake was dressed with white flowers and small gold and taupe details. The top tier was gluten free with strawberry jam filling, the second was lemon curd and the bottom salted caramel. It was topped with a gold love heart complete with our initials and covered in faux eucalyptus.

The place names were individually cut out of gold-painted wood for each guest. While the table numbers were held by gold frames.

REAL WEDDINGS

From The Wedding People we hired the Annabel flower wall and social booth. We asked To Have and To Hire if they could hang the neon sign onto the flower wall, which they very kindly did. We opted for barbecue boards with roasted new potatoes, coleslaw and mixed salad. I really wanted the food to be something we all enjoy and would eat.

We hired two restored Campervans to take myself, my bridesmaids and the mother-of-the-bride to the venue. My dress was Mildred by Rebecca Ingram. I found it on my first shopping trip. It was simple, but also had the most amazing beading on the top. I didn’t want anything that I’d have to be worried about all day – something I couldn’t sit down in, couldn’t enjoy myself in and most importantly couldn’t eat in! I felt amazing all day.

I didn’t need to accessorise much as the dress was so beautiful. I wore my hair down in Hollywood waves with a big clip. I had an amazing veil adorned with small diamantés, which complemented the dress perfectly. 39

Gav wore a black tie suit, a white shirt with black buttons and a waistcoat to set him apart from the groomsmen. The gents, including Gav’s older son Jack, were dressed in black tie two pieces, while the three page boys wore black tie too with waistcoats, black shorts, bow ties and Vans trainers.

Magician Andrew Kelly entertained guests during the drinks reception, and we then had a photo booth with flower wall later on. At the end of the meal The Singing Waiters surprised our guests and did a 30-minute set, which was the most amazing part of our day. It was hilariously funny and created such a joyous happy vibe.

We had the most amazing day and just wanted to soak up every second. Being together with our family and friends was priceless after the Covid restrictions of the previous 18 months.

The adult bridesmaids wore taupe V-neck gowns, while the younger ones wore sparkly gold dresses.

All of the speeches were incredible from the father-of-the-bride making me get up and do my Jim Carey Grinch impression, to the mother-of-the-bride apologising for running over my foot with the car when I was younger, and the groom’s public love bomb of how he feels about me.

The team at Cissbury were incredible. We had to postpone our first date due to Covid and they kept us informed at all times, were incredibly understanding and even sent us a voice note on our original date to say how excited they were for our wedding. On the day itself they took control of everything making it seamless and enjoyable. I can’t shout about them enough!

REAL WEDDINGS

Catherine and Rob said “I do” at South Lodge in July, 2021 Images courtesy of Love Heart Photography

C

atherine’s online dating success rate was pretty impressive given the first time she used Bumble she was matched with Rob. When they met for their first date at a pub in Worthing they immediately hit it off, Catherine says, “We laughed all evening and stayed until closing. Five days later we went on our second date and have never looked back. We have the same sense of fun and our connection is undeniable.” They’d also discovered common ground in that they both have two children, one boy and one girl. Rob proposed at Brighton’s Drake Hotel in 2020, the first day restrictions were lifted allowing people to stay in hotels again. He booked a sea-view room and decked it out with “marry me” bunting, rose petals, presents, flowers, a card and champagne.

When Catherine walked into the room, she found Rob on one knee proffering the bespoke teardrop diamond ring he’d had designed and made by Orla James Jewellers in Worthing. It took her a good few moments to absorb the scene but eventually said “yes.” The pair had spent one of their best nights at South Lodge having enjoyed a New Year’s Eve bash, complete with incredible food and memorable entertainment. “We loved the idea of going back to get married there and having the same band,” Catherine explains. The venue also has the option of getting married outside, which very much appealed. “Given all weddings during lockdown had been postponed and lots more were booked for 2021, we were over the moon to secure a summer date there,” she continues. Read on as the bride shares more memories of the big day... 43

espite celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2020, The Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux more than qualifies for a new venue shout out! With such a milestone in its history came the obligatory look to the future and weddings feature firmly on that agenda. It’s pretty rare to find somewhere that justifies the word “unique,” but it seems fair to say that this fits the bill. Step up the incredibly talented Sussex-based photographer Teri Vincent, who was asked to create a shoot to illustrate how incredible this location could be for couples celebrating their all-important big days. For me, fond childhood memories of visiting The Observatory were the first thing to spring to mind when Teri mentioned it to me, but they were quickly superseded as soon as I laid eyes on these impressive images of a super-cool wedding venue sure to appeal to couples’ cool alternative side. Let your imagination run wild and reach for the stars!

FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN SUSSEX I think I’ve always been passionate about photography and my dream came true getting my first DSLR camera 7 years ago. It all started as a hobby, then it actually became my job! I’ve achieved a lot through the years, and, like everything in life, we never stop learning. My favourite shots are certainly the ones which show spontaneity and happiness.

A FLORAL e s i d a par FLOWERS

15 ways to feature flowers in your wedding

1BOUQUETS

Petra Beaton at Sussex Florals (www.sussexflorals.co.uk) says, “The bride’s bouquet is to me probably the most important element to get right before we plan the rest of the wedding flowers. It not only sets the tone for the décor, but is also the first thing guests see when the bride walks down the aisle. There’s so much to think about: the style (wild and loose, rustic...), colours and which flowers to choose. Once the bouquet is sorted everything else falls into place.”

2

www.ruby-roux.com

BUTTONHOLES

Flower walls offer a breathtaking focal point for the top table and a background for the speeches. Reposition later as a backdrop to your guests’ super-fun red-carpet arrival style shots.

www.gemmamount.com

Don’t forget the gents when planning your flowers. Buttonholes are a great way to tie the wedding party together thematically and can help the groom stand out with a showstopping variation.

3BLOOMIN’ BACKDROP

4MAKE AN ENTRANCE

Petra says, “The aisle is a great place to make an impact. The ceremony space, whether it be a church, gorgeous outdoor area, rustic barn or beautiful stately home is the perfect place to set the scene. “Pinks and whites were the brief for this September wedding at Field Place. The lanterns were filled with an abundance of roses and we repurposed them as centrepieces dotted around the reception space.”

5CHIT CHAT

At a banqueting-style reception with long tables, a floral runner laid down the centre makes a gorgeous alternative to traditional centrepieces, and means guests can be sociable. If you’re sitting at round tables however, you can still ensure unimpeded chit chat by opting for raised arrangements with bases your guests can see through. 57

www.gemmamount.com

6NEAT PETITE

Alternatively for long tables, using small vases or jars filled with flowers is a super-cute way to go. Pack each vase with an array of different blooms or create a repeat pattern of vessels each containing a posy of one feature flower.

7CORSAGE YOU CAN

Corsages offer a great bouquet alternative for your bridesmaids, bringing a little something different. They’re also a great way to make mum feel more involved in the bridal party, with a design to complement your bouquet.

8MAKE A STATEMENT

Petra says, “If you’re planning an openair wedding it’s a great idea to have a large focal statement piece that’s sure to stand out. As the areas are large and mainly outdoors, the flowers tend to compete with nature, so bold colours work best. Think flower arches, decorated trees and interior poles for example.”

9HANG ABOUT!

If you don’t have room for table centres or need to fill a vast overhead space consider a hanging floral installation. Totally on trend and a fabulous focal point. Check out this stunning version by Sussex Florals.

www.gemmamount.com

10BE SEATED

Add some floral fascination to your place names. Let your theme guide you to a choice of rose head or sprig of foliage, lavender, pampas grass or even succulent wedding favours – all offer a gorgeous finishing touch making your guests feel extra special.

FLOWERS

DRESSED 11FULLY

Petra says, “We get all sorts of areas we’re asked to decorate. This vintage tractor at the entrance to a ceremony is still one of my favourites. We later repositioned the wild flower meadow from the tractor to decorate a vintage Land Rover at the drinks reception.”

12CROWNING GLORY

Given their whimsical feel, flower crowns are the staple of bohemian weddings with dried flowers now making a splash. If your style is more traditional though, ask your hair stylist to tuck a few blooms into your up do.

14UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES

Ceremony arches and moon gates are growing in popularity, symbolising the home you’ll create together.

13SELF-RAISING FLOWER

Decorating your big-day bake with blooms to match your arrangements ties it together nicely with the rest of your styling. If you’re nervous about using fresh flowers, why not ask your cake-maker to replicate them in sugar paste or adorn the cake table with an arrangement transferred from the ceremony?

15PEW COMPLETE ME

Sweet little posies of flowers tied to pew ends in a church or aisle ends in your venue’s ceremony space are a lovely finishing touch.

ocal florist Sam Green of The Crazy Daisy Company was inspired to create a shoot with a soft, boho aesthetic by the beautifully rustic barns at Sullington Manor Farm. She brought together a small, Sussex-based team who collaborated on this romantic vision showcasing their talents. With a showstopping floral display and plenty of candles, the dusky blue dress fitted in perfectly for a touch of elegance with a hint of originality and character. It works harmoniously too with the model bride’s soft glam make-up look and dreamy waves.

YOUR WEDDING RING BUYING GUIDE Engagement ring and wedding rings in platinum and red gold, POA, www.aurumjewellers.com

Hand-carved men’s wedding rings with diamonds, POA, www.aurumjewellers.com

Step five WHICH METAL? Step one BUDGET

Much like the rest of your wedding planning you need to mutually agree on what you want to spend on your wedding rings, bearing in mind this is something you’ll be wearing 24/7 for the rest of your life. Considering the hardiness of the metal you choose for example is important. More on that later! There’ll be something out there to suit whatever your budget though. Organic wedding rings, POA, www.aurumjewellers.com

Step three CONSIDER YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING

Wear your engagement ring when you’re shopping for the wedding bands as it will influence your choice. You’ll likely want to match the metal and even the shape, stones and depth. This is doubly important if you want your wedding band to be shaped around the design of your engagement ring. Many jewellers offer ready-shaped options to fit alongside standard diamond cuts such as marquise and pear, but PERSONALISATION you can always go down the custom-made Your wedding rings are the ultimate symbol of route if none of them work. your love and commitment to one another, so why not personalise them as much as possible? Men’s wedding bands, POA, Having them engraved with a meaningful www.aurumjewellers.com phrase, your initials and wedding date or even your finger prints all add that unique touch. You can also select your stones to have special significance. But beware! As Richard says, “Try not to go for anything too in-the-moment as it may not stand the test of time. Make sure you choose something with everlasting meaning.”

Step six

four WHAT’S YOUR STYLE? Step two KNOW YOUR RING SIZE Step Once upon a time wedding rings were by It’s important to get this right before you order as not all rings can be easily resized without a major overhaul of the design. Your jeweller will take your measurements properly, but if you’d like to get an idea for yourself there are plenty of measuring guides online. and large simple gold bands, but nowadays the options are incredibly varied. On a basic level there’s eternity (where stones go all the way around), half eternity (where they cover half the band) or plain of course; then there’s matte or polished... we could go on. Also, have a think about whether you want your rings to match, complement each other or be completely different. There are no rules, you do you.

DID YOU KNOW?

Men’s18ct white gold woodland ring, £1,350, www.baroquejewellery.com 72

Arguably the most crucial decision, this will effect everything from cost to the longevity of your rings, as well as the obvious look. When we interviewed Richard Talman and Hugo Johnson from RTFJ (and BBC’s The Repair Shop and All That Glitters respectively) last year, they told us: “The hardest wearing precious metal is and has always been platinum. It’s timeless and also holds polish a lot longer than white gold. Alternatively, 18ct gold is best if you’re looking to go down the yellow route. Avoid 22ct though as it’s very soft and 9ct as there’s more copper content in it than gold, so it tarnishes.”

Traditionally, the wedding ring goes onto the third finger of your left hand first, so that it’s the closest one to your heart. The engagement ring will be next followed by any eternity rings you’re lucky enough to receive for future anniversaries!

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU Andrew Leggett from Aurum DesignerJewellers (www.aurumjewellers.com) tells us about the bespoke process: “Considering the significance of a wedding ring it seems a shame to limit yourself to standard readymade designs. Even if you have something straightforward in mind, it’s much more personal to have a ring designed and handmade especially for you. “Dealing with a bespoke jeweller opens up new possibilities. For example, you might like to incorporate some features from your engagement rings, so the two look like they were designed as a set. Your partner’s ring can also be designed to have something in common with yours that will mark them out as a pair. “The good news is that a bespoke ring isn’t necessarily expensive. It’s designed to your requirements, including your pocket. The first step is book a design-consultation with a goldsmith to discuss the possibilities.”

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

FORWARD THINKING

What are the latest trends in wedding venue styling? The pandemic made us all re-evaluate weddings. Couples are now more conscious of how precious shared time with family and friends is. To this end, 2022 celebrations are likely to be more personal, creative and fun, using statement colour palettes, thoughtful décor, bold style and unique entertainment. There’ll be an increased focus on the environment and nature, with more outdoor weddings or venue dressing bringing the outside in. Florals will either be huge floor-to-ceiling installations or run along the full-length of the tables and be more waste mindful. With the focus on sustainability, rented flowers and leafy plants in terracotta pots are likely to be huge.

THIS IS US

How can we tell the story of us through our wedding cake? I love working with couples who want to use their cake to show their story! It often leads to some fun designs and always a unique bake for their day. A popular style I’ve create many times over the years and one that never goes out of fashion, is my hand-painted story cake. This depicts when or how you met, something you love and where you are now. It can also be personalised further to match the colour scheme of your day and allow you to add lots of fun, quirky detail. Show your personalities through the cake’s flavours too – I always suggest a selection and recommend choosing the ones you love. After all, making sure the cake is beautiful inside as well as out makes for a talking point for all the right reasons. Jo Stevens | www.peek-a-boocakes.co.uk

In terms of colour there’ll be something for everyone. The traditional pastel pinks and whites will be replaced with earthy, natural hues – think soft pinks, coffee, honey, caramels and ivories with a touch of rust or amber for those wanting something warmer. Couples will be embracing non-traditional palettes too. Media and fashion trends always influence décor and design, so I expect to see the obsession with the Regency era (thanks to Netflix’s Bridgerton) find its way into weddings. Whether this be through pastel colour palettes featuring soft blues, stationery details and signage in calligraphy; or floral arrangements of roses and trailing wisteria, with dining details using vintage china. We’ve heard about rituals we can have during a celebrantled ceremony, but how do we know which is right for us?

EXPERT ADVICE

Hand-fasting and unity candles are just two of the symbolic rituals that many couples are now choosing to include in their wedding ceremony, and each can be adapted to suit your own style. Hand-fasting is a beautiful ancient ritual said to be where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from. Put simply, it’s when a couple joins hands and ribbons or cords are used to tie a symbolic knot. You can use several different ribbons or plaited cord made up of different colours, or anything else you like. Couples often choose colours to match their palette. Using multiple lengths can also be a way to include family and friends. A unity candle is a lovely symbolic joining together or two families. Two taper candles are lit individually, before both are used to light a larger central candle. This can be a great way to include both mothers in the ceremony and also works well for blended families. If you’re thinking of including a symbolic element in your ceremony, then simply talk to your celebrant. They’ll be able to advise you on how they can incorporate it in a way that’s completely right for you. Tanya Jones | www.perfectpromisesuk.com 75 

ICE, ICE BABY

We’re looking for a super-fun and memorable catering idea for our wedding. What can you suggest? What’s a wedding without ice cream? Whatever your wedding style, from festival-themed with tipis to a rustic barn setting and everything in between, it’s a great catering option. Be it a post-ceremony celebration, an interactive wedding dessert or an evening sugar boost to keep the party going, serving delicious artisan gelato from a super-cool pink vintage caravan could be just the element of fun you’re looking for. With us, you’ll have the opportunity to select your favourite ice cream flavours to be served to you and your guests in either a waffle cone or tub. From classics such as rum and raisin and mint choc chip to something more unusual like Biscoff or gin and elderflower, we can offer gelato, vegan gelato and sorbets in more than 50 flavours. What’s more, our topping station is filled with everyone’s favourite sprinkles and sauces, allowing guests to completely customise their ice cream and enjoy an unforgettable experience. BLOOMIN’ DELICIOUS!

LET’S START AT THE VERY BEGINNING

We love flowers and want to incorporate them into our cake design. What would you suggest?

We got engaged over Christmas – so excited! But where do we start with the wedding planning?

Flowers are a wonderful way to feature colour, form and detail in your wedding cake. Fresh flowers are the most budget-friendly option and can exactly match your other floral arrangements. There are however a few restrictions as some popular choices are toxic and cannot be placed near food. Your hands are also a bit tied by what’s available at the right time of year. Your florist can give you the best advice. Sugarcrafted flowers are much more versatile, offering any bloom, any colour, and even metallic elements. Sugarcraft is a specialised skill and many flowers are very time consuming to make as they’re made petal by petal, so the cost of these will inevitably be higher than the fresh option. However, done well, they provide a very classy finish with an added touch of luxury. Given the increased demand for rustic-style cakes using dried flowers, foliage and grasses are on trend. They lend a boho vibe and pair well with fresh and sugar blooms. Hand-painted flowers or those created using buttercream add an arty element. Again, these involve specialist skills, so be sure to find a cake maker who has the capability to create the look you love.

Congratulations! Christmas is also when my fab wife Helen and I got engaged. I have a few suggestions based on my experience of around 50 weddings per year... ❤ Set a date for the wedding. Do you want a long or short engagement? Think about the time of year you’d both love to get married. Every season has its own benefits. ❤ Book the venue. Think about the type of venue you want and set a budget. Have a think about the ceremony too – you may wish to have a religious service in a church, a civil ceremony at a venue or Register Office, or exchange vows in a stunning woodland setting, beach or field for a personalised ceremony conducted by a celebrant. ❤ Book the high priority vendors. The very best suppliers who offer a bespoke service are usually booked well over a year in advance so it’s important to prioritise. This is true now more than ever with the Covid crisis causing a backlog, so don’t wait. ❤ Open days and wedding fairs. January, February and March traditionally have a lot of wedding events running. Venue open days usually feature trusted, high-quality suppliers so it’s essential to visit these.

Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

FROM THE INSIDE OUT

We’re having a country garden wedding in the spring and I’d love to appear fresh-faced and dewy. How do I achieve this? Alison says: We all know a good skincare routine is key to great skin and coupled with some quality make-up products, fresh-faced, dewy skin can be achieved for your big day. Try to keep stress levels to a minimum to avoid spots and flare ups of conditions such as eczema and get into a healthy sleep routine. Sleep is important for cellular renewal, so sleepless nights can lead to a dull, lacklustre complexion. Treat your skin from within with a well balanced diet including plenty of vegetables. Drinking water increases blood flow to the skin, making it look healthier and giving it a glow. If you’re planning a course of treatments with a skincare professional, start it at least three to six months beforehand for maximum benefit and they’ll be able to advise you on your home skincare regimen too. If you’re keeping it simple, you’ll need to use a cleanser and moisturiser daily, as well as an exfoliator once a week for a flake-free even skin tone. Before your bridal make-up application, skin will need to be prepped and hydrated to create a smooth base. A few of the products I love to use on my brides for a fresh-faced glow are... ❤ MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ (£22). Hydrates skin before make-up and sets it once applied. ❤ Glossier Futuredew (£23). Use as the last step in your skincare routine for a long-wearing dewy glow. ❤ Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter (£34). This can be used alone, underneath, on top, or mixed with foundation.

STYLE IT OUT

How can I tastefully incorporate my wedding’s theme or palette into my big-day beauty look? Chloë says: Tastefully incorporating your wedding’s theme or palette can be as bold or as subtle as you like. For example, you can delicately pick out the sparkle and embellishments in your gown with a wash of shimmer across the eyelids or cheekbones to highlight. Alternatively, if you wish to coordinate with the palette of your bouquet or decorations, opt either for complementing or matching colours. You can achieve this using various eyeshadows blended to the desired finish and equally with your choice of lip colour. Although natural hues are a clear favourite among brides, using bolder shades such as reds, pinks and plums not only makes for a striking look but also shows clear attention to detail when complementing your chosen theme. If you’re colour shy however, an alternative way to incorporate your overall theme is with your hair accessories. To match your bouquet, why not weave fresh flowers into your hairstyle or delicately place them above your veil to create a beautifully cohesive look. In a similar way to using shimmery make-up products, you can also highlight the details of your dress by choosing sparkly hair accessories.

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.
