hen my wedding photographer asked me which moments I’d love to capture on our big day, I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed. There’s so much about weddings that I adore that it’s hard to break down and put into a list. To help, I took inspiration from all the lovely real weddings I’ve seen over the years and my favourite moments, such as the vows and seeing your partner for the first time. After such a strange year for all of us, it’s nice to finally think about something positive and talk to wonderful suppliers who, like us, are happy that nuptials are getting back to normal. I’m so excited for the flurry of weddings and to see all your pictures and share the happy moments with you all. To celebrate, we’ve put together a showstopping issue that’s full of inspiration. We have three real weddings, two styled shoots, the latest jewellery trends and a must-see flowers guide. What’s more, our fashion section is full of boho and Hollywood-inspired dresses. If you’d like to be featured, get in touch via our website – www.yourwestmidlands.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or email me at melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

The Victorian orangery at Pitchford Hall in Shropshire has recently opened its doors. The orangery is a light-filled Georgian gem with glass walls topped by a stone shingled roof all set within private lawns contained by mellow brick garden walls. With a capacity for 60 guests and flexible outside space, couples looking for a traditional English country wedding will love this romantic venue. There is plenty of room for a marquee for additional friends and family in the garden too. The house itself is a beautiful Tudor timber-framed country building and is one of the nation’s most stunning Elizabethan houses. The orangery is a short walk from the main house and is right beside Pitchford’s most enchanting building, a tiny timbered tree house perched in the branches of an ancient lime tree. Queen Victoria was delighted with it when she visited as a child in 1832. “Couples searching for a romantic location for their wedding are having a hard time,” says Rowena Nason, who restored the orangery at Pitchford Hall. “Luckily, we have finished the transformation of our orangery, and brides can book it as a new, truly romantic, and historic venue.” Head over to www.pitchfordestate.com for more information. 9
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Severn Hospice are now offering pin badges as wedding favours. Rhiannon Geran and her fiancé Thomas Rowberry are getting married next July. Tom’s grandad, George, played a huge part in his life growing up, and they are dedicating a table at their wedding to him and have bought Severn Hospice favours for their guests as they want to thank the charity for caring for him. "Tom and I met on a dating website four years ago, and I thought his profile was very sweet," says Rhiannon. "The proposal was such a surprise. We always go for walks, so I didn’t think anything of it when we went out with his dog, Missy, around Oakengates stomping in the cold winter. We were sitting on our favourite bench, and he turned and said I’ve got something to ask you. When I realised it wasn’t a joke, I couldn’t speak for 10 minutes. We’re having a communal wedding at Wrekin Forest School, in the woods on the campsite with sunflowers and daisies as the theme. When grandad George got ill, Severn Hospice made such a difference at a horrible time. The staff were amazing, faultless. Tom told me that the best thing about Severn Hospice was that he could hold onto the memory of George being comfortable enough so Tom could make him laugh before he passed away. We don’t want wedding presents, so we picked the hospice to support as it's important to Tom and his family. Getting our favours from the hospice is all about giving back and having grandad George there at the wedding, and that’s what we both wanted." Karen Swindells from Severn Hospice said: “We were so happy when Rhiannon contacted us to order 150 pin badges for her wedding guests – she was our first customer for our new favour range, and her story touched us. Our new favours range of pin badges and lottery tickets can be part of any special celebration and a simple way to support us and to care for others.” To find out more visit www.severnhospice.org.uk/favours. You can also read the full story on our website.
THE PRINCESS OF FASHION Magic + Monroe is a new luxury brand offering handmade children’s clothing, accessories and dressup pieces. Based in Warwickshire, the team specialise in embellished tutu skirts that are perfect for flowergirls and look adorable in those all-important photographs. The owner Tamsin Rennie trained in embroidery and fashion with a background in children’s fashion design, and after becoming inspired by her daughter she launched Magic + Monroe. “Whatever your vision, we can help you make magic!” says Tamsin. “If you need a beautiful children’s outfit for a special occasion, a custom tutu for a wedding or birthday, then our bespoke service could be right for you. Whether it’s a particular design, colour palette or a special fabric in your imagination, our talented design and seamstress team can help you bring it to life.” Visit www.magicandmonroe.co.uk for more information. 10
HIDDEN WONDER The Fuzzy Duck, a boutique hotel in Warwickshire, has re-opened. The award-winning quintessential English pub is ideal for small weddings and is licensed to host civil ceremonies, so the service, wedding breakfast and evening reception can all take place under one roof. Renowned for its delicious locally sourced menu and awardwinning restaurant, the property serves seasonal cuisine that’s perfect for any wedding. THE GREAT OUTDOORS The Trentham Estate, one of Staffordshire’s hidden beauty spots, has announced it will open up for garden weddings to help meet demand. The wedding and events coordinator, Hannah Cope, tells us: “The UK weddings industry has always been incredibly strong, but the pandemic has left people at a loss, not only about where to get married but how. There has always been a huge demand for weddings at Trentham, owing not only to its incredible surroundings but to the abundance of memories it creates year after year, from first dates to romantic proposals. Opening up the Trentham Estate for garden weddings and outdoor civil ceremonies seemed like an obvious thing to do. Not only will it allow hundreds of couples to get married sooner, but it also gives peace of mind because it’s one of only a handful of outdoor ceremony options throughout the UK. We also have a semi-permanent, glass-fronted marquee that can be adapted to any future guidelines in a truly historic setting. The Estate itself boasts 725 acres of stunning countryside with breathtaking views over the mile-long lake from the outdoor listed loggia, where the ceremonies can take place, as well as 300-acres of woodland and an abundance of rare and stunning wildlife.” To find out more, visit www.trentham.co.uk

Tie the knot in a fairytale venue
DUNCHURCH PARK HOTEL, CV22 6QW
Dunchurch Park Hotel is an Edwardian country manor house situated within 72 acres of landscaped gardens. Dating back to 1767AD, the house and gardens are Grade II listed due to its connection with the highly respected international landscape gardener Thomas Mawson. Over its 250 year history, the estate has served many purposes, owned first by King George III, it subsequently became a hunting lodge, then a preparatory school for the sons of gentlemen, before finally becoming the hotel we see today. The original turning circle for the arrival of carriages and portico entrance feel like something out of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The exterior, coupled with lush green lawns and a sparkling lake, look stunning in those all-important photographs.

Performing at weddings is my favourite part of the job! I perform in many different arenas, both on stage and with close up, but there is something so special about being part of a wedding day. I consider it such a privilege to be able to add value to what is already such a joyful event and to be able to establish connections through the medium of magic, between strangers who share a love of the happy couple but who may not be known to each other until that day.

REAL WEDDINGS

REAL WEDDINGS

ess and Rupert met at a party celebrating their GCSE results. “We instantly clicked and found out we were about to go to the same sixth form,” says Jess. “We were the best of friends for the two years of sixth form, and although Rupert already knew, I finally realised it was more than a friendship just before we headed to university. I went to Bristol and Rupert went up to Leeds, so long-distance was the only option for three years! After a gap year, I moved up to Leeds to complete my teacher training and to be near him.” Rupert surprised Jess by proposing. “We had discussed getting married and agreed we wanted to do it, but the proposal was a complete surprise,” shares the bride. “Since moving to Leeds, I always wanted to spend a day exploring Harrogate, so as it was approaching Christmas, I organised a day trip to go see the festive lights. Rupert suggested going on a walk up Almscliffe Crag on the way, and when we reached the top, we paused to take some pictures, and Rupert got down on one knee. After a lot of confusion, I said yes!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 29
We chose my childhood church for the ceremony, as it only seemed right to tie the knot in a beautiful, familiar setting with a fabulous organ!
When choosing our reception venue, we wanted it to be in the countryside to tie in with our nature theme. I adore animals and loved the idea of a barn wedding, so Coton House Farm Weddings & Events was perfect. We loved the fact that it had beautiful views and a paddock for outdoor games.
The barn’s decoration reflected our love of nature. Our family friend, Jo Davis, did a beautiful job of arranging our wildflowers from Flowerology into mismatched jars on the tables. The finishing touches were the homemade bunting made by my auntie and the woodland wreath placed behind our seats. 30
For the cake, we chose a three-tier masterpiece made by my mum and auntie. It was covered in buttercream and flowers and made up of fruitcake, chocolate, lemon and vanilla.
Our table plan was a rustic wooden board made by my dad with the table names hanging from a string. The tables were named after woodland creatures to reflect my love of animals.
Rupert’s grandpa, Alan, provided his dark blue Jaguar XJ to transport us, and my uncle drove the bridesmaids in a light blue Volkswagen Campervan.
REAL WEDDINGS
I wore a dress called Elysee by Wendy Makin. The dress needed to be lightweight so that I could run and dance in it and have a touch of nature. After trying on many gowns, I fell in love with it at Yes Bridal Studio. I accessorised with a floor-length veil and dried flower crown from Magaela.
Jenkinsons Caterers provided brie and mango parcels to start, a pork duo with sweet potato dauphinoise and vegetables for the main, and white chocolate and raspberry liquor cheesecake to finish.
The bridesmaids opted for mismatched styles and colours from David’s Bridal. I wanted to make sure they all felt comfortable, so I let them choose the dresses they wanted.
Rupert chose a three-piece blue suit with brown leather shoes and a burgundy tie from Milano Couture.
Since it was a COVID-19 wedding, we needed to keep the entertainment as outdoor-friendly as possible. Coton House Farm Weddings & Events has a lovely courtyard outside where guests had drinks and canapés and enjoyed the weather. We also set up a selection of outdoor games handmade by my dad.
In the run-up to the wedding, we were both anxious and nervous, but when the day came, we were incredibly calm. Getting married just felt so natural, and we had the perfect day. 31
My dad, sister and the best man did fabulous speeches.
The ceremony was a particular highlight of the day because we were lucky enough to have our friends provide some wonderful music. It really helped set the tone, and everyone enjoyed it immensely. We also loved our first dance, as it was great to have fun and get cheered on by our guests!
Rupert and I went to Scotland for a week for our honeymoon. We walked, canoed and ate lots of lovely food and relaxed in the cottage’s hot tub. We then spent two nights in Edinburgh and loved exploring and spending time together. We still think about our trip and how we would love to be back in that moment! We were lucky to have so many wonderful personal touches provided by friends and family, which made the day so special. Everyone played their part, whether it was decorations, cake, stationery or transport, they all went above and beyond.

One FINE day Jade and Paul said their vows in a romantic ceremony at The Old Vicarage Hotel Images courtesy of Finlays Imaging

ade and Paul met through mutual friends. “I think it’s fair to say I was persistent,” laughs Jade. “Over time our relationship blossomed, and in November 2018, Paul proposed. It was a total surprise! We were visiting Bermuda for my 30th birthday and were playing miniature golf and having a few cocktails when Paul popped the question. Following this, we went onto New York for a four-day stay before returning home for my birthday.”
SETTING THE SCENE “We liked that The Old Vicarage Hotel was a small family-run business,” says the bride. “It was also a blank canvas with lots of natural light. We didn’t want people travelling too far, so the fact the hotel was just 30 minutes away from our home was ideal. It felt like a good compromise and offered a mixture of traditional and modern décor. We knew we didn’t want to be planning a wedding for years, so when the pandemic happened, it allowed us to organise our perfect day within our budget. The venue provided the food which was tailored to suit our needs and tasted amazing.” For their favours, the couple gave their guests goodies from Hotel Chocolat. “On our first holiday together, we stayed at the Rabot Restaurant by Hotel Chocolat in St Lucia, so we wanted to reference that in our day,” shares Jade. “Our big-day bake was a rustic three-tier creation from Cheryl’s Cake Boutique. It was made up of chocolate orange, lemon and raspberry and decorated with blush pink flowers. You can never have too much cake, so we also purchased some chocolate cake pops!” “Evelyn & Elliot provided our table plan,” explains the bride. “Paul is a huge Spurs fan, so we knew we wanted to include this somehow. We ended up naming each table after a player and featured a picture of them in the middle of a flower wreath or as part of a candle display. It was the perfect compromise, flowers for me and Spurs for Paul. The blooms were made by Hello Petal and they tied in with our day perfectly. Evelyn & Elliot also created small tickets for the place names to tie in with the football theme and a large timeline board in a ticket style.” To decorate the space, Jade and Paul chose chair covers from Timeless Chair Cover with a diamanté broach that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My dress was from Heavenly Wedding Belles,” recalls Jade. “It was a simple ivory satin gown. Our family friend is a retired seamstress, and she lowered the Bardot sleeves and added buttons down the back as I felt it needed some additional details. On the day, I had Pastels by Natalie and GirlCode do my hair and make-up.” Peter Posh Formal Suit Hire provided the groomsmen’s outfits. “They chose navy suits, and Paul stood out with a floral tie and a grey waistcoat,” Jade adds. “The groomsmen opted for navy waistcoats and blush ties.” “My bridesmaids wore blush and sequin dresses from ASOS,” says the bride. “One of my maids had recently had a baby, so that style gave us plenty of options and ensured she felt comfortable on the day.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “To keep everyone entertained, we had a Polaroid camera station and photo frame,” shares Jade. “We also had a live singer called Alex Norman and Colin Dorning MBE Resident Magician. They 35

were lifesavers as my dad sadly ended up in hospital, so we took an hour out to go visit him in between the day and evening party, and they worked the room and entertained everyone.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “On the morning of the wedding, we felt excited and overwhelmed, but we both loved our day,” explains the bride. “We were in our own bubble, and it was the best feeling having all our friends and family with us to celebrate. My favourite moment was walking down the aisle. You spend all your life practicing that walk, having it all planned and I ended up feeling like I sprinted down it. I’m renowned for being late, so when I got there I stood and turned to Paul and said I’m early for once. He looked at his watch and told me his watch battery had died, typical!” The bride’s uncle, Nigel, stepped in to walk Jade down the aisle. “He even had a speech prepared,” Jade adds. “It was comical yet serious and was exactly what my dad would have wanted to say.”
HONEYMOON “For our honeymoon, we went to Mauritius for seven days,” says the bride. “This was originally meant to be our minimoon with us then planning to travel to Australia to watch the cricket, but due to COVID-19, we had to cancel our trip three times! We will be delaying it again as I’m currently pregnant.” 37

A
life REAL WEDDINGS
rusa and Ahkum met on a dating site. “I was the one who made the first move by swiping on his profile and sending a message,” says Arusa. “He responded, and we clicked straight away. It was as though we’d known each other forever. We had a lot of banter, but the conversation was cut short as he was getting to know someone else and was due to go on a date with her. I respected this and asked to be friends, however, we did not speak again. Half a month or so later, Ahkum sent me a message stating the date didn’t go well, and I was the first person he thought to message. He was attracted to my confidence, smile and how we could talk about anything and I was drawn to his physical appearance (of course), his honesty and the fact that he showed respect and integrity from the beginning, which is
a rare quality to find.” Ahkum popped the question on the 17th May, 2020, without a ring due to COVID-19. “It was during a picnic in Sunbury Park,” shares the bride. “The date wasn’t significant in any way, but it was a surprise. He decided he wanted to be with me forever and the distance between Birmingham and London was far more than the both of us were willing to handle especially given the pandemic, which didn’t allow us to be together for months on end. COVID-19 actually brought us together in a weird way, and we grew stronger and closer. He officially proposed on the 6th July, 2020, at Sunbury Park, but this time with a ring we’d bought together.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 41

FLOWERS
MEET MEGAN BARRADELL FROM TWIGG FLORAL DESIGN LTD www.instagram.com/twiggflowers | www.twiggflowers.co.uk Q - Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist? I decided to do a City and Guilds Qualification in Floral Design after I was asked to do the flowers for my best friend’s wedding as her florist was taken ill last minute. I loved the creativity of it and working with such beautiful materials. At first, I became disillusioned with turning it into a fulltime career as the industry’s poor ecological track record/impact on the environment just didn’t sit well with my own moral viewpoint. It was only after coming across the wonderful Flowers from the Farm Organisation that I began to understand that it was possible to work with only British grown seasonal blooms and foliage, so last year after being offered some land to rent, I decided to sent up Twigg Floral Design Ltd. I now grow around 80 per cent of my stock without using chemicals or singleuse plastics and supplement when needed from other British growers. Q - What should couples expect when booking your services? I have a very relaxed, natural style, working with seasonal British flowers and foliage as well as using seed heads, grasses and dried versions to add texture and interest to the designs. I love being able to reflect the couple’s personalities in the blooms I create, using colour and wild elements to make the arrangement unique to them. Q - What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why? My favourite arrangement to date has to be the eight-metre meadow scape I created for a top table a few years ago. The meadow style really appealed to me and created a talking point for the guests too. I had also been asked to provide some thank you bouquets, so I created the meadow in shorter sections, so each of the main bridal party got to take their very own slice of meadow home with them.
Q - How long before the wedding should couples book? As early as possible. I already have bookings for 2023! For small weddings, I would usually need a minimum of one month’s notice, but it does depend on what the couple is looking for and my availability. It can be difficult organising everything, so I will always try to accommodate a last-minute request if I possibly can. Q - What’s your favourite part of the job? I love delivering the bouquets to the bridal party and seeing the bride’s face as she sees her flowers for the first time. It’s such a privilege to play even a small part in their day. I really enjoy it when the couple are open to being more adventurous, and I can get creative. I also like incorporating herbs into my designs and adding layers of scent to the arrangement. Q - Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist? Choose someone that reflects your style and understands the type of day you wish to create. Pinterest is great but don’t let those images dictate what you have – it’s your day, so let your flowers reflect that. 47
MEET ANNE WHYSALL FROM ANNE WHYSALL FLORISTS 01743 792 333 | www.annewhysall.co.uk
Q - What’s your favourite part of the job? Creating different flower and foliage combinations and putting together colours, textures and fragrances. I love how different each wedding can be, even if two couples pick a similar colour palette, with a slight change, it can take on a whole new life.
www.laurajaynephotographer.co.uk
Q - Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist? Try and talk to your florist with an open mind, take inspirational images, of course, but then let the professional make recommendations. We know what flowers are the best quality for your season and what designs will make the most impact within your budget.
www.sophiemayphoto.co.uk
Q - How long before the wedding should couples book? I recommend a year. Couples can book the date before that following
an initial consultation and then come for a follow-up meeting during the month/season of their wedding. That way, they can see and smell some of the flowers available.
www.ekrpictures.com
Q - What should couples expect when booking your services? Couples should expect our guidance and support from the first meeting at the initial consultation right through to delivery on the day. Most of our clients only know a small amount about flowers, so they look to us to give sound, honest advice about what will make their vision become a reality. We have full transparency with our quotes and pride ourselves on the quality products that we work with. A couple can book as many appointments with us as they wish and can stay in correspondence via email or phone as much as they’d like to. We don’t have a minimum spend and offer a no-obligation quote following the consultation.

Q - Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist? We’re a Shropshire based florist who has been open for six years. We have recently moved from a retail shop to a large studio, giving us more space and flexibility to focus on weddings and workshops. My name is Anne, and I’m the co-owner of the business with my husband Jamie, who works full time separately and helps out when he can. We’re a small but experienced and passionate team. We all work well together and have a combined 25 years of experience. We have contracts with several local wedding venues, and we travel all over the West Midlands delivering our wedding flowers. Anne Whysall Florists has won The Wedding Industry Awards West Midlands Prize twice now, and I’ve also been awarded a silver medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. I believe that our passion and love for what we do is translated into our work, meaning every wedding we work on is that bit more special.
MEET KAMIE CHEYNE FROM THE FLORAL CHEYNE 07869 283 583 | www.thefloralcheyne.co.uk Q - Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist? My floristry experience started when I worked on feature film sets for Disney and Warner Brothers in London as a horticultural set dresser. My love of flowers and plants grew, and when I moved back to the Midlands, I started The Floral Cheyne. I now have a luxury floral studio situated in the heart of Alvechurch. Q - What should couples expect when booking your services? A memorable, stress-free floral journey from the initial enquiry and bespoke consultation at my studio to the delivery of exquisite luxury flowers, which will be presented in bespoke packaging along with additional special touches. Q - What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why? It would have to be my wedding bouquet as it was the first one I ever made before I took the leap into starting The Floral Cheyne professionally. Q - How long before the wedding should couples book? Flowers can often be left until last, however, if you have a florist that you would like for your day, it is never too early to reach out. Especially in the current climate, diaries are getting very busy for 2022 and 2023 already. 48
Q - What’s your favourite part of the job? I genuinely love every aspect of the job, even down to the cleaning up, but nothing beats the moment you hand the bouquet to the bride. Q - Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist? Do your research as every florist has a different style, and you need to love their work before booking!

FLOWERS
MEET CAROLE PATILLA FROM TUCKSHOP FLOWERS 07527 370 653 | www.tuckshopflowers.com Q - Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist? Before I became a florist, I was a teacher who had an obsession with gardening. That’s where my love of flowers began, and it was growing them for years that led me to think about trying to turn my passion into a job. I never intended to become a florist! I planned only to grow blooms and sell them at farmer’s markets, but people kept asking me if I did weddings, funerals etc, as they loved the natural, country look that I grew. I did my first wedding for Andrew and Kate of Urban Herbs, fellow market traders in 2015, and wedding floristry, funeral arrangements and teaching workshops are now the main strands of my business. Q - What should couples expect when booking your services? The way I work is quite different to a traditional florist as I specialise in seasonal ingredients, many of which I grow myself. Rather than starting with a set design, I work with colour schemes and what looks loveliest at the time. This approach means that I don’t know exactly what I’m going to make until I’ve gathered up all my flowers and foliage and stand in front of them like a kid in a floral sweet shop. Anyone who works with me needs to be prepared to go with the flow, and this approach requires a high degree of trust from my clients. I offer two types of wedding service – budget packages or a fully bespoke service. Q - What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why? My favourite arrangement tends to be whatever I’m working on! The excitement of seeing the ingredients change with each passing week never gets old! At the time of writing, I’m prepping for a wedding at the weekend, and I’m working with scented garden roses, philadelphus (which smells amazing), frothy white Ammi, cornflowers and peonies. I love a creative challenge, so I really enjoy making installation pieces like a silver birch arch dressed in gauzy white muslin and floral accents, hanging hoops and ladders of flowers.
Q - What’s your favourite part of the job? When all the flowers are gathered up and prepared and the moment arrives when you decide which are the blooms that the bride absolutely must have in her bouquet. It’s such a treat to pick up that bucket of gorgeousness and turn it into something unique and special. Every bouquet is a one-off because flowers never stay the same from one week to the next! Q - Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist? I think it’s really important that you find a florist whose approach and style fits your own – whatever that may be. I realise that some couples may want to know exactly what their flowers will look like in advance and I definitely wouldn’t be the right company for them. Explore suppliers’ websites to see if their images have the look and feel you want for your big day. Don’t pick a natural wild florist if you want modern and geometric or vice versa! When you’ve found someone you’re interested in, make contact and have a chat. Weddings can have a long lead time, and you’re going to be working together for quite a while, so it’s important that you share the same attitude towards the details.
www.roostain.com
Q - How long before the wedding should couples book? Most of my bespoke clients book at least a year in advance, so my diary tends to fill up for summer weekends quite quickly. Right now, there is obviously a high demand for dates this summer once lockdown restrictions are eased, and 2022 is quite busy already with weddings that have been postponed. For package weddings, as I’m providing only bridal party arrangements (bouquets, buttonholes, corsages) and buckets of cut flowers and foliage for the couple to decorate the venue, I can organise these at relatively short notice depending on the size of the order and my availability.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries Our experts solve your problems
DRINK IT ALL IN Q – How can we create the perfect drinks menu for our big day? Creating the perfect drinks menu is not as daunting as it sounds. Here are the four key areas you should consider: ❤ Break down your day into sections to focus on what’s needed, such as reception drinks, wedding breakfast, toasts and evening celebrations. ❤ Budget wisely, know your maximum spend and stick to it. Don’t try to please everyone. Etiquette is to provide refreshments upon receiving guests at the reception and then with the food and for toasting. You could consider having a cash bar service running alongside for guests who don’t want to drink what you’re offering, and then you don’t have to worry about trying to accommodate everyone. ❤ Consider your theme and how you can add a personal touch to the day. For instance, jugs of Pimms and homemade lemonade would be ideal at a garden-style wedding or opt for his and hers cocktails at a chic hotel celebration. ❤ Look at your guest list. Consider the drivers and non-drinkers as well as children invited to the day. Make sure you provide jugs of iced water and bottles of cordials on the table, especially if it’s a hot day, and always offer a non-alcoholic alternative for reception drinks and toasting. Remember, it’s your day so think about what you would like to be sipping as you celebrate!

SAVING THE PENNIES Q – We’re on a tight budget but still want beautiful stationery. How can we spend our money wisely? When it comes to wedding stationery, there is so much choice available and a variety of prices that it can certainly get overwhelming. Quality is very important as an invitation may look pretty online, but the actual feel of it may not be to your liking. Always do your research and get to know your supplier, talk about options and if they’re local, arrange a consultation to see their products first hand. There are lots of ways to keep within your budget without jeopardising the design and quality. For instance, you could opt for a smooth card instead of a textured version but still have the benefits of a beautiful design. You can choose to have a personalised favour tag that also doubles up as a place name to save spending on both. Printing on both sides of your invite can help limit the number of cards you need, and some stationers have existing collections that can be changed to suit your colours, saving the cost of a bespoke design fee. Remember that a save-the-date or invitation is a very important part of your wedding journey. It’s your guests first taste of what to expect on your big day and should reflect you as a couple. Work with your stationer to get the best you can within your price range. Anna Thomas Stationery expert www.evelynandelliot.co.uk 53
MUSIC TO MY EARS Q – What should we consider before booking a string quartet?
JPS166 Francesca – Part of the June Peony Couture Collection
LET THE SHOPPING BEGIN Q – When should I start looking for a wedding dress, and do you have any advice on how to go about my search? This is a frequently asked question, and the answer will depend on how far in advance you have booked your wedding. Nowadays to buy a stock wedding dress off-the-peg won’t be mission impossible for brides living in big cities. However, we would still suggest allowing three months to do any last-minute bridal shopping, in case any alterations are needed, and to leave you some time to shop for bridal shoes and hair accessories. For a bride who has planned far ahead, with one to two years before the wedding, we would suggest you visit a bridal boutique sooner rather than later. In our experience, starting dress shopping six to 12 months before the big day will give you enough time to find your dream dress and get it well fitted. Thanks to the wellestablished global bridal supply chain, manufacturing lead times are shorter than years ago. However, to get a decent gown, haute couture dress or a bespoke design, it still takes lots of time to make. The earlier you sort out your dress, the less stressed you will be closer to the wedding date. There are many different ways to search for the perfect gown. Start by looking for bridal styles online and in magazines to get an idea of how you want your dream dress to look. Then search for local companies online, check their reviews and find the most trustworthy shops to start your fittings. Meanwhile, chat with your married friends and see if they can refer you to any stores. All in all, visiting a quality bridal boutique will work better than visiting too many shops. Quality bridal shops with a wide range and flexible services will always give you more useful options, as well as save you time and make sure you enjoy your shopping experience. Mandy Lee Wedding dress expert www.junepeonybridal.co.uk 54
When does the quartet play? We find it works well playing as the guests arrive and when the bride walks down the aisle and walks out. We can then continue into the drinks reception and break out into our very contemporary repertoire. People are often surprised at how many different genres a string quartet can cover, from classical to things like Guns N’ Roses. Think about how you see the string quartet being a part of your day and get in touch with them to discuss your requirements. Lynette Webster Musician www.capriccioquartet.co.uk
PLANNED TO PERFECTION Q – My wife-to-be and I are thinking of hiring a mobile bar for our wedding. What questions should we ask before booking? Hiring a mobile bar for your wedding is a great, cost-effective way to keep your guests refreshed, and if you choose the right one, it can add a real wow factor to the day. There’s no shortage of choice out there, so you can afford to spend time asking the right questions to make sure you get what you want. Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect match: ❤ What is the hire cost? Most mobile bars will make their money from the drinks they sell. If you have enough guests, there’s every chance you could negotiate the hire charge. ❤ How many people can they comfortably serve? There’s nothing worse than having to wait forever to get a drink, so make sure you ask the vendor how they plan to keep the queues down, especially if you have a lot of friends and family attending. You’ll also want to know how many staff they’ll be providing. ❤ Do they offer wedding packages? Ask about any special packages they offer, particularly if you’re interested in the vendor providing the drinks for the wedding breakfast. ❤ What type of drinks can they provide? Some mobile bars will be able to provide a full range of drinks, including draught beer, cider, cocktails and a wide selection of gins etc, whilst others may be more limited. ❤ Can I see some photos? There will likely be several mobile bars available in your area, so ask for some up-to-date photos and choose one that looks amazing. It’s also worth asking what the vendor can do to fit in with any theme you might have. ❤ How much will drinks cost? You might have negotiated the hire of the bar, but don’t forget about your guests! Make sure you ask for a price list before booking. Chris Davies Mobile bar owner www.chooseyourbar.co.uk

Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!
through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
PRETTY AS A PICTURE
As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!
Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!
56
Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.
Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.
We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.
A room full of candles is a must!
For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.
Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.
This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 57

REGIONAL SHOOT
woodland
Inspired by Ladies Wood in Warwickshire, a group of local suppliers worked together to create this boho-themed shoot Images courtesy of Zara Davis Photography
T
his styled shoot was put together by the talented Christianne Hemming from China Grey. “The theme was woodland boho,” says Christianne. “We wanted to complement the beautiful and natural surroundings of the ancient woodlands where we shot. The area belongs to the Earl of Yarmouth and is tucked away in a quiet corner of the county of Warwickshire, bordering Ragley Hall. Aptly named Ladies Wood, it’s a private events venue and is home to the elderflowers that make the Earl’s award-winning St Maur, a delicate and exquisite elderflower liqueur. We wanted to be as natural and organic as possible with simplistic design features while still taking full advantage of what nature had to offer. The ever-changing light added to the drama, and even a deluge and thunder didn’t dampen our spirits. “Our bride and groom were married under the giant redwood with its cathedral-esque proportions. Simple benches and furs provided the seating for the congregation, and candles lit the aisle. Sharing vows under the canopy of the forest, our wedding celebrant eased away any last-minute nerves and even provided umbrellas when the rain came.” The cake was provided by Cake Fantastique. “Our woodland bake was inspired by the natural tones of the landscape, and St Maur was used to flavour the amazing sponge, which tasted sublime,” shares Christianne. “It looked magnificent perched on top of the tree stump, which acted as an unusual cake stand. Our beautiful flowers from Studley Florist were robust and earthy, with thistles and hydrangeas setting the backdrop for the bridal bouquet and buttonholes. Our chill-out Little Bouteepee tent created an area to allow the happy couple to escape for a few moments to reflect on the ceremony and day’s events. The cocktail bar, Bluebelle, provided an elegant drinks station for guests and is equally at home on the shore of the lake bordering the woods as she was nestled in amongst the bluebells.” The bride and groom’s attire was supplied by Country Master. “It was cleverly styled and layered to allow for all the weather that the day threw at us and easily allowed them to move from day to night without outfit changes,” explains Christianne. “The hair and make-up were stunning yet understated with the subtlety of colours bringing out the bride’s beauty yet complementing the wedding style and woodland setting.” 65

“
amlad Barns is a beautifully rustic wedding venue nestled on a hillside overlooking the Powys and Shropshire countryside,” says coordinator and planner Sarah from Yours Truly Wedding and Events. “The décor and colourful courtyard made it the perfect backdrop for our styled shoot. Each supplier was carefully picked, and together
we created elegant dressing, soft florals, incredible backdrops and luxury handmade rag paper stationery. The bridalwear was kept relaxed to suit the vibe and we kept the make-up natural leading on to a more glamorous evening look. We were really pleased with the finished result, and of course, Twig, the horse, played a big part and stole the show!” 69

BYE BYE TO DRY
When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

THE CLEANSING EXPRESS
Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk
POLISH PERFECTION
Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.
SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk
BE AT PEACE
Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com
HAIR REPAIR
If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 83

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley
A
nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 84
Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry
strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair
BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrientdense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to haircare. The integrity of a product and what
hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients. ❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily
at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-or-death situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 85

HONEYMOONS
fo May
Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade II-listed Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dogfriendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.
STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy villagegreen views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort,
amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.
EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best
starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.
EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morrisdesigned stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a well-earned pint makes it all worth it.
BOOK IT: Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis. Visit www.thealicehawthorn.com 87

Q&A
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
BRIGHT AND BOLD
Q – What are the latest colours and looks for summer brides?
Sofia
Martha
The most popular colours requested this season are rose gold and blush pinks. These work well on most skin tones and eye colours. As a make-up artist, my goal is to enhance your beautiful. My brides love shimmery eyes teamed with glowing flawless skin, which is what you want when all eyes are on you on your special day.
MJ750
Starlet
MAKE A STATEMENT
Q – I have a pear-shaped figure. What dress styles do you recommend to show my shape off? We recommend a fitted gown for a bride with a pear-shaped figure. Use your wedding gown to your advantage and choose a style that accentuates your waist and hugs your hips. Here are some examples of our favourite dresses: ❤ Anthony is a fitted gown perfect for any bride wanting to show off their gorgeous curves. There are no details, so it’s ideal for confident brides. ❤ Lexi is a soft lace fitted gown with little detailing. ❤ Sofia has cut out sides that will accentuate your waist, and who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle? ❤ Martha is perfect for brides with a smaller bust who still wants to show off their curves. For those of you who want to show off their tiny waist but camouflage their hips, A-line dresses are the best option. Here are some examples: ❤ MJ750 is an alternative style that’s flattering but modest at the bust area. ❤ Starlet has a delicate bodice, deep V neckline and a bit of sparkle. ❤ You should always feel confident in what you wear on your wedding day and love your curves because they’re a part of you! STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD
Q – I’m an alternative bride and want something a bit different for my wedding hair and make-up. Do you have any ideas that will help me stand out on my big day?
www.rebeccaknowles.co.uk
Amy Coyne Make-up artist www.instagram.com/amycoynemua
Everyone’s idea of alternative is different, so the best piece of advice I can give to anyone planning their wedding hair and make-up is to be yourself. You’ll want to look back at your wedding photos and recognise the person you were when you said your vows. Think about how you can take aspects of your everyday style and elevate them for your bridal look. Do you have an undercut or a statement hair colour? If so, think about styles that show it off. Are you known for always having winged liner? Make that bigger and better than ever before. Secondly, look at what else you’ve planned for the wedding such as the dress and accessories, do they have a theme? If you have a floor-length green velvet gown that screams red carpet, go for big Hollywood waves and a statement red lip. If you need more advice, then contact your artist, and they will help you come up with ideas. Sarah Russell Hair and make-up artist www.sarahrussell.co.uk
