elcome to the first issue of 2022. It dawned on me over the festive period that in just a few months time I will become Mrs Cullen – eek! I can’t believe how quickly time passes, we’ve been engaged for more than a year now, and it’s just flown by. I’m very organised, much to my fiancé’s dismay, but the closer we get to the day, the more I feel like I’m forgetting something. We’ve booked all of our suppliers, organised all the outfits, so it’s just the small things left to do, but the nerves are starting to set in. My wonderful bridesmaids have been helping keep me calm, but the idea of walking down the aisle without falling over is giving me nightmares. Talking to some of our readers, I know that many of you felt the same in the run-up to your big day, so it’s really nice knowing that I’m not alone. If you have any tips for controlling nerves on the day, please feel free to get in touch as any ideas would be greatly appreciated! I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I did writing it. It’s full of tips from local wedding professionals, ideas for styling your venue, fabulous real weddings, styled shoots and an impressive fashion section. If you’ve recently celebrated your day, been involved with a styled shoot or want to share tips from your planning journey, email me at melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com or via www.yourwestmidlands.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

DRINK IT ALL IN Multi-award-winning St Maur is a small batch of premium elderflower liqueur handcrafted in Alcester, Warwickshire, using responsibly sourced ingredients, with elderflowers gathered in ancient family-owned woodlands. Ideal for weddings, St Maur is the creation of The Earl and Countess of Yarmouth, William and Kelsey Seymour, who first produced it for their wedding guests three years ago before deciding to turn it into a full-time family business at the start of lockdown. To help expand the business, the company have moved into a new premises. William tells us: “We wanted a drink that would capture the spirit of that lovely day. Drawing on old family recipes handed down to us, we created St Maur, and we named it after our family heritage. We also gave it the colour of love.” For more information, visit www.drinkstmaur.com

GRAND STATION, WV10 0BF 01902 454 550 | www.grandstation.co.uk The Grand Station originally opened in 1854 as a Grade II listed building formerly known as the Lower Level Train Station. In 2012, after the building was derelict for almost 30 years, it was transformed into a popular venue for weddings, events and conferences. Situated just a short walk from Wolverhampton’s train station and town centre, the Grand Station is situated in the heart of the city. The property has a large outdoor space and the exterior was designed by engineer Sir John Fowler, with the rack work by Mr Henry Robertson and the roof and layout by Mr Isambard Kingdom Brunel. As Wolverhampton’s former train station, the space has retained its historical feel, but has transformed the former train platforms into modern venue spaces as well as the former ticket area, which is now used for ceremonies.
Celebrate in style Civil ceremonies take place in the stunning Old Ticketing Hall, which can hold up to 150 guests. This space has Italian Renaissance ceilings, and classic sash windows finished with a grand chandelier that looks great in photographs. There are two main venue spaces: the Grand Hall and the Brunel Suite. The Grand Hall can hold up to 700 guests and is fitted with luxurious décor and benefits from mobile staging that can be arranged to meet different requirements. arah and Liam met years ago. “I was too shy to talk, and we didn’t see each other again for quite some time,” says Sarah. “One day when I was at work, I looked up, and Liam was there smiling at me, and it was like no time had passed at all.” Liam popped the question in June 2020. “We went for a quiet walk through the park,” shares the bride. “People were walking by when out of nowhere Liam got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I remember standing there in shock with tears rolling down my face. I pulled him up and said yes.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
27
Our reception was at The Crown Shard End in Birmingham. We decorated the space with white table cloths, love letters, a balloon arch and banners. We decided to get married at Birmingham Register Office as it was where our daughter’s birth was registered, and my parents were married there.
Our flowers were a mixture of purple and white blooms.
Liam and I gave our guests sweets as favours.
To transport us, we hired a car from Forever Vintage Wedding Cars.
I made our wedding cake with supplies from the DIY Icing Centre. It was white with purple roses. 28
REAL WEDDINGS
My dress was from Lula Ann Bridal. It stood out to me, and I knew it was the one. I accessorised with a hairpiece and sparkling shoes.
Liam chose a navy blue embroidered suit with a purple tie from Next.
The bridesmaids opted for beautiful dresses. Everything was perfect. We felt amazing, loved, special and nervous.
My favourite moment of the day was when we exchanged rings.
We rushed out of the house and were 15 minutes late for the ceremony, and if we’d been five minutes later, we wouldn’t have been able to get married. 29

ayleigh and Matt met through mutual friends when they were teenagers. “Our friendship later flourished into a relationship,” says Kayleigh. “Matt was very confident back then and always thought we’d end up together. What attracted me to him was his ability to always make me smile.” Matt proposed after seven years together. “We were on holiday together in Fuerteventura,” shares the bride. “He woke me up at 5am to drag me to the beach to watch the sunrise. We were on a cliff’s edge looking at amazing views of the sea when he got down on one knee and popped the question! I was in shock, and he was a nervous wreck at the idea I’d say no. Obviously, it was always going to be a yes.”
SETTING THE SCENE “Originally, we hadn’t considered Weston Hall,” explains Kayleigh. “However they had an open day, so we decided to go and have a look at what the property had to offer. From that day, we both knew it was absolutely perfect. We booked our date the very same day! The building is grand and beautiful, and the surrounding grounds were picture perfect. I was attracted to the top terrace and could picture our guests having their welcome drinks and canapés there. The team at Weston Hall provided the catering, and we had a vast menu to choose from. The food was phenomenal, and all the guests said how amazing it was.” For their favours, the couple gave their guests a key, which doubled up as a bottle opener and keyring. Each one had a card attached that read: ’the key to happiness is love and the ability to open a bottle.’ “Our table plan was very simple,” recalls the bride. “We grouped our families together, but we mixed the other tables in the hope our guests would mingle and socialise with one another. It worked just as hoped, and everyone spoke, danced and laughed together. We named our tables after the years we’d been together, with each one featuring a picture of us from that particular year.” The happy couple chose a mixture of white and blush roses for their flowers from Nadia Di Tullio Flowers. “We dressed the tables with white tablecloths, blush runners, candles and gin bottles,” adds Kayleigh. “We also had a sign situated at the bottom of the main staircase welcoming everyone. We had crates going up the staircase with candles and foliage and a moon gate set up in the ceremony room. There was also an area that had our guest book and pictures of our loved ones who unfortunately are no longer with us.” Kayleigh and Matt’s big-day bake was made by Forrester Cakes. “It was a three-tier design presented on a log to tie in with our rustic theme,” remembers the bride. “It was dressed with foliage and roses to match the bouquets and topped with a Mr and Mrs cake topper. The flavours were Victoria sponge, cherry bakewell and lemon.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I was lucky enough to win a competition hosted by The Bridal Rooms where friends and family nominated key worked throughout the first lockdown to win £2,500 towards any dress in the store,” says Kayleigh. “Eventually after trying on several gorgeous designs, I chose Athénaïs by Élysée. I fell in love with the way it hugged my curves, the beautiful lace and the blush undertone. I accessorised with simple earrings and a necklace.” Matt and the groomsmen chose rich blue suits from Suit Direct. Matt’s waistcoat was different to help him stand out. “The bridesmaids oped for multiway dresses that were made-to-order via Jacqueline Louise Bridal on Etsy,” shares the bride. “They were stunning and suited the girls so well.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had a band in the evening called The Cave who are an indie/rock group

from Manchester,” explains Kayleigh. “They were better than we could have imagined and catered for all ages. Our dancefloor remained packed from start to finish which was exactly what we wanted.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “On the morning of the wedding, we couldn’t stop smiling,” recalls the bride. “Our hearts were so full, and it was honestly the best day of our lives. The moment that stood out the most for me was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Matt grinning. I wasn’t nervous, surprisingly, just super excited to start our lives together as Mr and Mrs.” Kayleigh’s sister, Lauren, planned a surprise after the wedding breakfast. “We were completely unaware of what was going on,” adds Kayleigh. “She appeared with her guitar and began playing Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love. Not only that, but she had arranged for a guest on every table to stand up and sing parts of the song. They had all their lines printed, and it was thoroughly thought out, which made me cry a lot! At the end of the song, the whole room was up and singing, which was utterly amazing.” “During the wedding breakfast, one of Matt’s friends mentioned to the best man that there should be something about Matt’s love for quiche in his speech,” remembers the bride. “It’s a running joke that before we lived together, Matt lived off quiche. My dad overheard this conversation, so during his speech, he managed to slip a joke in which got all of the men laughing.”
HONEYMOON “We went to York for a mini-moon for four nights the day after the wedding,” says Kayleigh. “We planned it together as a short break away with the idea of going on a more luxurious honeymoon once travel restrictions were lifted. York is a beautiful city, and we were blessed with lovely weather during our time there.” 35

mily and Andrew started talking on Tinder in 2016. “For me, it was love at first sight,” says Emily. “We had our first date at TGI Fridays, where we enjoyed each other’s company over several cocktails. We have similar personalities and just clicked.” Andrew proposed on Valentine’s Day. “He had sent flowers to my work and cooked a meal that evening,” shares the bride. “After we’d eaten, he said he had one more present for me, which was a wedding planner that I’d jokingly pointed out a few days before. It was a complete surprise and shock! The only person who knew was my dad, and I don’t think I even said yes as I was so stunned.”

T
his rustic-themed shoot was organised by Samantha from the Samantha Jones Collection | Your Wedding Hand. She tells us more about how it came together: “The moment I walked into Blithfield Lakeside Barns, I fell in love with the tranquil location, so I decided to arrange a styled shoot to inspire couples who planned to get married there. I decided on a rustic theme for this wedding barn but felt a touch of glamour would work well too. The tables and chairs were provided by Event Furniture Hire Ltd, which were then dressed in champagne satin sashes and gold centrepieces from Sorella Florist & Event Stylist, who also provided the rustic moongate backdrop. “Our bride was dressed in the most stunning gowns from The Bridal Rooms that brought some glamour into the shoot. Each dress was adorned with lace, crystals and beads and had a statement train. The suits were provided by Kevin Paul Hirewear Specialist. I wanted a classic black tie look, so we chose a tux that brought a high-end look to the shoot. Helen Pearson Makeup Artist created a flawless look that was finished with Bridal Hair by Michelle Jewess, who made an up do with soft romantic curls. The hairpiece was created by my company, Samantha Jones Collection | Your Wedding Hand, which brought everything together. “Of course we had to have a wedding cake too, and The Little Ingestre Bakery did not disappoint. We also had delicious traditional wood fired pizzas from the talented Bedford & Basil. I created and designed the bouquet and groom’s buttonhole with various types of eucalyptus, foliage, dried pampas and gold flecks. Becc Photography was outstanding in capturing the brief and comes highly recommended, and the models, Tamara and Elliot, were true professionals, and we all loved working with them. An extra special thanks must go to the owners of Blithfield Lakeside Barns, Alex and Lydia Brown, who have put their heart and soul into this venture and thank you so much for letting me into your world.”

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC:
wedding worries Our experts solve your problems
BAKE OFF! What questions should we ask our cake maker before booking?
FASHION FORWARD I want my bridesmaids to feel amazing but I’m struggling to find the perfect dresses. What designs will be popular in 2022? This is the year for neutral colour palettes with shades such as champagne, latte, cappuccino and beige being popular. Multiway dresses fit these hues perfectly and create a relaxed boho vibe. These designs can be wrapped in different styles to suit every body shape. We will also see the return of traditional satin gowns, which works perfectly if you’re having a black-tie theme. Remember, sometimes less is more and neutral shades are timeless and elegant! Katie Saunders | Bridesmaids expert www.katesdresses.co.uk
Your cake is one of the most important parts of your wedding and will be something that your guests will remember, so it’s essential you find the perfect supplier. Here are some things to consider before booking: Do they offer cake samples? You can normally choose up to six flavours depending on your cake designer. Make sure to mention any allergies and dietary requirements. Can they design a cake in the style you want? Ask to see examples of their previous work and check reviews on Google and Facebook. Feel free to ask for referrals if you want to be 100 per cent sure they’re right for you. Do they have sufficient experience to create your desired bake and the necessary food hygiene certificates? Are they registered with public liability insurance? Do they deliver your order and set it up for you at a specific time? See if they offer payment plans or easy payment options. Some suppliers let you make monthly or quarterly payments with an initial deposit to save the date. Most importantly, make sure you feel safe and comfortable with your designer before committing. Samantha Strecker| Cake expert www.cakefantastique.com 57
FOOD FOR THOUGHT We’re looking for the perfect caterer, what should we be aware of before committing? To ensure your catering is perfect, start by checking that your supplier can provide what you want. Schedule a call or video chat before booking to get a feel for what it will be like working together. Don’t be afraid to ask for examples or photos of their work. Check that they can cater for dietary requirements, provide serving staff and the timeframe they need to serve your guests as there’s nothing worse than some tables eating dessert while others haven’t received their starters. Make sure they have the relevant food safety certificates and insurance, and always read the terms and conditions before you pay any money. Discuss what would happen if you needed to change the number of guests, any dietary requirements or if you need to postpone/cancel for any reason. Make a note in your calendar of the deadline for changes and when the balance needs to be paid. If anything changes, give your supplier plenty of notice. Libbi Coldicott | Caterer www.cranberryandthyme.com
SETTING THE TONE What stationery trends will be popular in 2022? It’s going to be a big year for the wedding industry. Here are some of my trend predictions: Love stories and romantic literary greats will feature strongly in 2022 wedding trends. With the second series of Bridgerton set to air in March, Regency period fascination will find its way subtly into weddings, with literary-inspired touches and splashes of blue. Think of a quintessentially English cottage aesthetic and regal elegance. Perfect for the traditionalists amongst us. Many couples are already choosing earthy, natural colour palettes and moving away from the whites and pastels of old. Whether it’s grasses, pampas, eucalyptus or simple foliage with minimal petals, it will be a strong trend for the year ahead. If you’re looking to reduce your environmental impact, opt for eco-friendly suppliers and reusable items. Environmentally-friendly stationery and reusable decorations and favours will play a big part, as weddings become a statement of how a couple wants to live in harmony with the environment. Backyard weddings have been booming the past couple of years, and we expect no changes in that trend. Lockdown made us appreciate our homes, and it was a place many of us felt comfortable and safe during such a turbulent time. With COVID-19 still around for the foreseeable future, home weddings give the comfort of safety to both the couple and guests. Multisensory elements is a huge trend we’re expecting this year where guests can experience a wedding at another level. Think food and drink that doesn’t just taste and look good, but feels exciting. How about a venue scented with candles to match scented wedding stationery that has been sprayed with your favourite scents and perfumes? Photo booths, immersive bands and surprise singing waiters are all immersive experiences that we think will continue to be popular. Lisa Forde Stationery expert www.treeofhearts.co.uk 58
THE NEXT BIG THING I want a long, dramatic veil for my upcoming wedding. What designers/styles should I look for? There are many types of veils available, so start by considering what style will suit your dress. Do you want a dramatic opulent look or something more soft and delicate? A popular option is the single-tier lace-edged veil, which is one piece, with lace along the wide edge and gathered into a hair comb at the top. Similar to the Spanish mantilla veil, a single-tier veil without lace edging will suit most face shapes. Of course, single-tier veils can also be exquisitely decorated with other details, such as satin, pearls, beading, embroidery or a horsehair braid. Another timeless and romantic style is the voluminous two-tier veil. These are made with a comb which has been folded near the top to create a blusher (a veil that covers the bride’s face) which adds an air of mystery. You can keep the front blusher any length, and the second tier can be made as long as you want, which is the perfect choice for a luxurious bridal showstopper. This modern style can be decorated with pearl detailing, delicate embroidery, lace edging or sparkling tulle. Alternatively, a shimmering 3m wide long tulle veil can be a simply stunning yet understated choice for wedding dresses with special-shaped trains. At June Peony Bridal Couture, we have made lots of heavy and opulent detailed couture wedding veils. We’re also offering a free 30mins bespoke veil consultation for Your West Midlands Wedding readers with the Ref: YWMWB. Mandy Lee | Wedding dress expert www.junepeonybridal.co.uk

VENUE STYLING
W
e’ve been on a rollercoaster of restrictions, social distancing and guidelines over the last few years and as a result, the wedding industry has had to adapt. In this feature, we wanted to explore how wedding trends have changed and what’s set to be popular in 2022.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS The pandemic has opened our eyes to just how beautiful outdoor weddings can be.
With environmentally-friendly weddings on the rise, we can expect to see earthy, natural colours and detailed items like terracotta pots, wooden plinths and linen napkins. Neutral colours look great teamed with colours such as rust, gold and coral.
Al fresco weddings give you more space to go all out on your decorations. Create zones to help break up the day, such as a ceremony area, reception area and party area. Why not add a luxurious lounge by bringing eclectic furniture outside? Get creative with what space is already there, hang flowers in jars from trees, line grassy walkways with lanterns and adorn natural structures with opulent drapes.
We’ve seen a rise in the popularity of dried flowers in the last few months and are expecting this to continue in 2022. It’s a cost-effective and eco-friendly way of incorporating a pop of colour into your day. Don’t underestimate the power of lighting, from fairylights and candles to statement light fixtures, these will all help elevate your styling after dark.
More couples are bringing the inside out by carefully considering textures, ambient lighting and opulent styling touches to set the scene. Flowing drapes, gold crockery and decadent glassware will add the wow factor, while statement pieces such as a chandelier hanging from a tree or festoon lighting guiding guests will add a sense of drama. 61
Here at Your West Midlands Wedding, we’ve seen a rise in the number of sage green and blush weddings.
MAKE A STATEMENT Whether you go for subtle hues or make a splash with bright and bold shades, there are a variety of options available.
Vibrant palettes with striking flashes of colour and eccentric jewel tones are big for 2022. Coral pinks, pink-purples and vibrant blues are starting to come into their own.
If you want to create a dramatic statement, why not opt for a black colour scheme? When used correctly, this striking hue can look gorgeous!
Sage, olive, emerald and moss green are all beautiful shades that work well with blush, yellow and rose gold. These striking colours have become more popular since the increase in outdoor weddings.
Pantone’s Colour of the Year was recently announced as Very Peri. As a result, we expect to see more purple-themed celebrations in the near future. 62
A monochromatic palette is a great way of getting creative using just one colour. Use a variety of shades to create drama and highlight certain parts of your day. This can be done with any hue, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
VENUE STYLING
ELEGANT ROMANCE Since the release of Netflix’s tv show Bridgerton, we’ve seen a rise in quintessentially English-styled weddings.
The new fascination with the Regency period has seen a rise in blue and white-themed weddings. Handwritten notes and literary quotes placed around the venue will add a personal touch to your day. Afternoon tea is a growing trend and is a great alternative to the traditional sit-down meal.
Lanterns have been popular at weddings for some time now, and this is going to continue into 2022. Vintage china sets are starting to make a comeback and add an elegant and sophisticated feel to any setting.

Let me eat cake!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
A
s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.
JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier
design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
68
Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are
entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.
To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!
Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.
I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.
Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.
I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.
My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.
Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.
The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 69
I am a professional magician and member of The Magic Circle, based in West Midlands and perform regularly at weddings both large and small across the UK. I offer a wide range of wedding packages including;
TABLE MAGIC IN BETWEEN COURSES | MINGLING DURING RECEPTION | MINGLING DURING PHOTOGRAPHS | CLOSE-UP/MINGLING BEFORE AND AFTER THE SPEECHES BESPOKE PACKAGES TO SUIT INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS
Entertaining at weddings is my favourite part of the job! I perform in many different areas, both on stage and with close up, but there is something so special about being part of a wedding day. I consider it such a privilege to be able to add value to what is already such a joyful event and to be able to establish connections through the medium of magic, between strangers who share a love of the happy couple but who may not be known to each other until that day.

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). EDITOR LOVES
We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

reboot your sleep
Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep – it’s vital for fighting off tiredness, stress and winter bugs. But beware hibernation mode. It’s tempting to oversleep during dark winter months, but this can make you feel sluggish. Aim for around eight hours a night and try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day to encourage a healthy bedtime routine. Natural remedies such as Together Health’s Night Time Marine Magnesium Complex (£12.99, www.togetherhealth.co.uk) can also be hugely beneficial. What are the latest wedding hair and make-up trends?
SHOP TILL YOU DROP
I’m nervous about my first dress appointment. What should I expect? First of all, please don’t be nervous. You will have the expertise of a bridal consultant who will put you at ease and guide you through the process. Shopping for a wedding gown should be a memorable experience, and we aim to make you feel as comfortable as possible as soon as you come through the door. If you’ve never been dress shopping before, we would advise you to keep an open mind and choose a few silhouettes to try. This might include a soft A-line shape, a ballgown or a fit and flare design. Your consultant will be there to offer advice and guide you to the perfect silhouette for your body shape. We often find our customers will buy a style that they had never even thought about. It’s an exciting process, and all we want is for you to look and feel amazing. You won’t need to wear any special underwear to your appointment as all dresses have built-in corsetry, and we also have sample shoes for you to try underneath. We recommend you leave at least nine to 12 months before the wedding to start shopping for your dress as it can take between 15 and 20 weeks for an order to arrive in store. As the gown will be ordered in standard sizing, it would need to be altered by a seamstress, which can take two to three months. Julie Reilly Owner of Perfections Bridal Studio www.perfectionsbridalstudio.com 88
Brides-to-be are now opting for more natural-looking skin. This is ideal for those who don’t wear much make-up and can be created by layering products such as oils and serums before applying foundation. Carefully placed highlighter will catch the light in the right places giving your skin a youthful glow. A soft natural hairstyle will complete this look, either soft curls with half pinned up or a low bun with loose tendrils. A sultry eye can help add something a little bit extra to a more natural look. Using soft brown matte eyeshadows with an added touch of shimmer on the lid can make a difference. This could then be finished with a nude lip. Softly contoured make-up can show off your cheekbones. This can still work with a more natural look by keeping the cheeks radiant with a cream rouge and a touch of highlighter. Hollywood glamour is also popular. Beautifully sculptured waves with simple nude eye make-up and a statement lip colour can look incredible. Lashes and brows are still a big focus. Not everyone is blessed with luscious long lashes, so sometimes we need a little help. If you’re planning to have individual lash extensions, it’s a good idea to try them first to make sure you’re happy with the finished look. An alternative option is to have lashes applied on the day by your make-up artist, which you could try out when you have your trial. Nicely groomed brows will help shape your face and make your eyes stand out, so make sure you have them tidied! Any eyebrow shaping or lamination should be done with plenty of time for any skin irritation to calm down. A new trend is the ponytail. When dressed with the right accessories, this can look elegant and effective. Simple, large plaits with loose tendrils, dressed with a hair vine is also becoming more popular for the year ahead. Make sure you use the time before your wedding to experiment with different ideas so that you can approach the day knowing that you are comfortable with the style you’ve chosen. Bespoke options are also available bride arriving by boat? Of course! An outdoor gathering under a stretch tent? The talented team can make it happen.
A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.
Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.
WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.
Book it: Nightly rates at Monkey Island Estate start from £275 per room, per night in a Temple Room. 01628 623 400, www.monkeyislandestate.co.uk www.facebook.com/MonkeyIslandEstate www.instagram.com/monkeyislandestate
