ugs from friends, happy tears during the ceremony and busting moves on the dancefloor – these are some of the things I’ve missed about weddings. Not to mention the flowers, the cake, the delicious food, the anticipation of what the happy couple are wearing, the entertainment… the list goes on! We could get stuck feeling upset for those whose plans have been ravaged – my friends are on their fourth wedding date – instead, I’m going to channel the emotion from all the hard times and missed events to ensure that I make the absolute most of every second with loved ones. This issue is all about celebrating the incredible Yorkshire wedding suppliers who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic: from the cake designers (page 55) and venues (page 15) to the make-up artists (page 74) and venue stylists (page 49). Whether you’re planning your big day for the fourth time or you’re recently engaged, these pages will provide everything you need to plan the ultimate celebration.

Did you see the gorgeous real wedding of Beth and Michael Copley in our last issue? The talented pair also run a wonderful business, BC Creative, providing personalised items for weddings. “While on furlough during the pandemic, I found that I was expressing myself more artistically and decided to take the leap and start my own business,” Beth says. “I produced and designed my own stationery for my wedding in November 2019 and had always wanted to start a business in this industry.” BC Creative offer products for all types of wedding, but the couple particularly enjoy small, intimate weddings where the newlyweds personalities really shine through. “This is because it was the type of wedding we planned ourselves,” Beth explains. “I find clients that aren’t afraid to show off their personalities are the best to work with as it gives me more scope to get creative.” Find out more at www.bc-creative.co.uk

FLORAL FABULOUSNESS

We chat to the lovely owners of Tweedle Floral Design (www.tweedlefloraldesign.co.uk), Erika McManus & Samantha Taylor…

Tell us about your business... Tweedle Floral Design consists of a partnership, Erika McManus and Samantha Taylor. We choose to work with sustainable methods of floristry and use foam-free mechanics in all our work.

RING-A-DING-DING!

Based in Sheffield, CAST offer the ultimate jewellery-making experience for wedding rings or on-the-day jewellery, with customers able to create their pieces in wax before the company cast them in recycled silver, gold or platinum. While they’ve been offering their make-at-home kits throughout the pandemic, the company is now excited to reopen its Sheffield studio. Here, the CAST team will help you create your wedding bands together while offering all the support you need to make pieces that you are over the moon with. When visiting the studio, the team takes care of all the little details, from beautiful wine and local foodie delights to a night in an award-winning boutique hotel. This magical experience will give you the opportunity to escape the craziness of wedding planning and enjoy some time together, and at the end you’ll have incredibly personal, heirloom rings to love forever. Find out more at www.experiencecast.com

What’s your favourite type of wedding to work on? We value each and every booking we get because of the individuality of the couple; it’s amazing how different everyone’s floral vision for their day can be. We love to make that a reality for them – no matter the palette, theme or inspiration behind it. What’s your top tip for couples choosing their flowers? Think about seasonality. If you’re set on having particular flowers, then let your florist know so they can check availability for your big day. If they’re not available, your florist will have the knowledge to provide alternatives that will deliver the same impact. Have you diversified during the pandemic? The pandemic has confirmed that the power of flowers is huge. We wouldn’t normally have such a big focus on gift bouquets, but we have found that when family members could not be with one another for special occasions then we could provide that connection with our doorstep deliveries. 9

A COUNTRY HAVEN

The team at The New Hobbit Hotel wedding venue decided to make a positive out of the most recent lockdown by giving the venue a gorgeous new look. “We have undergone appearance changes in the bar, restaurant and snug area,” says Max. “It’s now brighter and more contemporary. We’ve created a better flow around the building, making it an even more welcoming venue for weddings. Although lockdowns and restrictions have been hard for the hospitality sector, the team here are more than ready to get back to doing what we do best – especially with these delightful new changes.” This beautiful country venue offers a flexible approach to weddings, with bespoke packages designed to the couple’s requirements. With a number of open days throughout the year, there’s plenty of opportunity to check out the venue’s new look in person. For more information, visit www.newhobbit.co.uk/weddings

Ecoblooms is a company specialising in eco-friendly wedding flower alternatives that you can keep and treasure as a keepsake of your big day. Run by Sylvia Pearson, the company has had to get creative while weddings have been on hold. “I create handmade, everlasting flowers from donated plastic bottles,” Sylvia explains. “Although faux flowers aren’t new, and there are so many fabulous options out there, there isn’t anyone creating them from plastic bottles with the variety that I do.” So who does Sylvia cater to? “The eco-warrior, the everpractical, the romantic, the quirky, the sentimental,” she says. “Those who know exactly what they want and those who haven’t a clue! Everything is handmade and can be tweaked to suit exactly what the customer wants.” During lockdown, when weddings were on hold, Sylvia took orders for gifts for friends and family. “My flowers make perfect, everlasting reminders that someone loves and misses you,” Sylvia says. “I’ve also had a chance to experiment with new plastics; I can now offer mini brooch favours and cute mushroom garden ornaments.” Check out www.ecoblooms.net

What’s more, you can visit the company in person at its wonderful new shop at Springfield Mill in Denby Dale. “Throughout the pandemic we’ve been offering our personalised gift sets for customers to show their loved ones that they care,” owner Vicky Woodger tells us. “They’re beautifully boxed and packaged with a personal message card. We also launched our home fragrance range, which includes wax melts and oil burners in our signature scents. They make lovely wedding favours and we’ll soon be adding more products to this range.” Check out www.prettylittletreats.co.uk

REAL WEDDINGS

A

nna and Jack met in the summer of 2011, and fell madly in love. “I was friends with Jack’s sister,” Anna says. “I moved into a house in Manchester but it badly needed renovation work; the solution was to stay with their family in the Orkney Islands for a few weeks while the work took place – gatecrashing a family holiday!” Anna and Jack soon connected as friends, before it grew into something more. In November 2019, the pair went on a beach holiday in Ilfracombe, where Jack planned to pop the question. “He proposed in our wind-battered beach hut, which had a lovely view and a hot tub,” Anna tells us. “It was so quiet and wild – we had the place to ourselves. We celebrated with a romantic breakfast and a walk along the coastal path. It was a magical day.” The happy couple originally planned to get married in North Wales with 130 people. Of course, the pandemic then hit and their plans went into disarray. Luckily, a friend put them in touch with Westfield Farm in Sherburn, which was starting to branch out into micro-weddings to adapt to new regulations. “It offered us an intimate, rustic and cosy venue,” Anna tells us. “It helped to create the natural and relaxed atmosphere we were going for.” We caught up with Anna to find out how they planned their dream wedding for 5th December, 2020, in the midst of a pandemic…

THE PERFECT SETTING The couple had their hearts set on a winter wedding, with a woodland theme. “Think Narnia mixed with ski cabin!” Anna says. “We created the feel with real log fires, scented candles galore, evergreens, pinecones, wooden hearts and faux fur rugs.” Hundreds of fairylights gave a warm glow to the setting, while lanterns were used to create a twinkling aisle.

MAKING THE DAY THEIR OWN The talented bride handmade many of the decorations, including the gorgeous paper bouquets and buttonholes, which were given to every guest to reflect their personality. “Marvel comics were used for the groomsmen, and I also used maps of significant places,” Anna says. Going from a guest list of 130 to an intimate 15-person wedding meant that the couple had to quickly adapt and use local suppliers 23

REAL WEDDINGS to provide everything they needed at the last minute. “We used a bakery in York called Dough for delicious finger food, fresh pastries and our cake,” Anna says. “We ditched the idea of a traditional cake, instead opting for an Austrian favourite: apple strudel. We both love skiing and this is a regular afternoon treat on the slopes. Not a scrap was left and the smell of cinnamon was so festive.” The wedding breakfast was served courtesy of The Mount Hotel in Malton, via a takeaway service. Anna says, “While it may have been unconventional, I was adamant that the food was going to be fresh, home-cooked and delicious.” The newlyweds laid on a hot chocolate bar, to keep loved ones warm while enjoying the gardens. With no staff at their disposal because of restrictions on numbers, the pair’s superstar guests transformed the space from the ceremony room to the evening reception room, while the newlyweds drove to Hunmanby Gap beach for some atmospheric photos with their dog, Jackson. Anna explains, “Our guests loved being involved and I’m told it was like a military operation! We were blown away.” Anna and Jack returned from the beach to a sparkler reception before evening celebrations commenced.

LOOKING THE PART Anna had bought two dresses during the summer when she had been very unwell, but she only intended to keep one. However, after the year she’d had she decided to indulge herself and keep them both – saving the second, a ballgown, for a larger celebration next year. “I wore a Great Gatsby-style beaded dress from Wife To Be, and had it altered at Once Upon a Dress near York,” Anna tells us. “Not only did they alter it to fit, but they added some flapper sleeves I had bought on Etsy to accentuate the style.” Anna completed the look with a champagne veil and a gold leaf hair braid, which was woven into her curls. Jack bought a new black suit from M&S and a burgundy bow tie, while the groomsmen wore their own suits with navy bow ties. Only three bridesmaids were able to attend because of limits on numbers, so the burgundy gowns they originally had planned were put on hold until next year. Instead, they wore their own choice of dress in navy, burgundy and blush pink.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The newlyweds hosted a games evening to entertain their guests. Anna says, “My bridesmaid arranged a game of Mr & Mrs involving the parents, which was great fun – and embarrassing! I then organised a ‘girls vs. boys’ challenge of Play Your Cards Right and Family Fortunes, which was hilarious and very competitive. We then had games for people to play in smaller groups, including the classic Austrian game, Stump, which involved hammering nails into a block of wood – we did wonder what the neighbours thought!”

NAVIGATING THE NEW NORMAL After changing just about every aspect of their wedding, Anna and Jack were just glad to be getting married. After a difficult year when Anna had been ill, the most important thing to them was becoming husband and wife. “Having to deal with new suppliers and venues made it an interesting year, with some stressful moments,” Anna says. “We went into lockdown in November not knowing if we’d be out of it in time for the wedding. We were excited to have something different for our day, even though it was driven by COVID, and we got to spend time with our family and friends. We smiled all day long!”

Kelly and Oliver’s last-minute December wedding sparkled at Hazlewood Castle

Images courtesy of Charlotte Clemie Photography

K

elly and Oliver met nine years ago on a good old-fashioned night out (remember those?). “Oliver was a breath of fresh air: outgoing, fun and charming,” Kelly tells us. “I was instantly attracted to him and we’ve been inseparable ever since!” Fast forward a few years, and the pair are fully renovating their home. Kelly thought that a proposal was the last thing on Oliver’s mind – even though he knew she wanted to get married. “He proposed in Marrakech on my birthday,” Kelly smiles. “He had a big surprise planned for the evening, but couldn’t wait any longer and proposed on a sun lounger first thing in the morning. The surprise was going to include a camel, so I was secretly glad that didn’t happen!” Of course, Kelly was over the moon, and once back in the UK the pair started thinking about their dream wedding. However, with the pandemic making wedding planning almost impossible, they decided instead to plan a last-minute celebration, with a church ceremony at St. Chad’s followed by a reception at Hazlewood Castle for 29th December, 2020. Kelly fills us in on the details… 29

REAL WEDDINGS

Wed-fest

Alicia and Phil threw the ultimate festival-style celebration Images courtesy of John Hope Photography

I

t was while Alicia was working behind the bar at The Royal Oak pub in Ripon that she and Phil caught each other’s eye. “She was friends with my younger brother,” Phil says. “I was first attracted to her looks, and we soon found out that we share the same sense of humour.” Looks also played a part for Alicia. “I thought he was the best-looking person I’d ever seen,” she says. “I have since seen Tom Hardy, so Phil has moved to a close second!” A few years later, Phil was dreaming up the perfect way to pop the

question. “I decided to do it in Barcelona – our favourite city,” he says. “Alicia had no idea I was going to propose; I think she had given up hope after being together for so long! She also didn’t know that 15 of our friends were coming to celebrate with us!” Back home, the pair got planning their perfect wedding: a summer festival-style tipi celebration. They set the date for 13th July, 2020, and chose Skipbridge Country Weddings as the perfect location. Alicia gives us the lowdown… 35

Our cake had three delicious tiers of raspberry Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle and chocolate orange.

The venue has a relaxed vibe, with llamas and peacocks roaming free, beautiful grounds, a ‘hobbit’ hole, firepits and quirky accommodation. Nothing was too much trouble for the team; they worked quietly in the background to make sure everything went flawlessly.

To fit our festival theme, we chose whimsical, free-flowing florals. The centrepieces featured homemade rustic boxes, candles and log slices.

We had a top table for Phil and I, the bridesmaids and groomsmen. All the other seating was a free-for-all, allowing people to mingle and sit where they like. 36

We created some elements ourselves for a personal touch. There were homemade sloe gin favours and décor made from pallet wood, including rustic P&A letters, a doughnut wall and signage.

REAL WEDDINGS

We treated our loved ones to canapés before a festival-style buffet and hog roast, followed by dessert and a doughnut wall.

I wore a beautiful boho gown called Charlene by Maggie Sottero. It went on to win wedding dress of the year! I accessorised it with a flower crown, red shoes and matching jewellery. Later on, I changed into a pair of Converse, which were personalised by my bridesmaids!

Phil wore a three-piece suit, thistle and wildflower buttonhole, and a burgundy tie to match the groomsmen’s colours. My best girls wore mid-grey dresses, each in a style to suit their own look, with wildflowers in their hair.

37

Alicia’s top tip: Meet as many of your suppliers as possible, either in person or via Skype. If you get a good vibe from them, it makes wedding planning so much easier. All our suppliers went above and beyond – we could not fault any of them.

To entertain our guests we had lawn games, which included croquet, giant Connect 4 and an Austrian game that involves nails, a hammer and a tree trunk! We also had an awesome musician called Matt Stephens who everyone loved.

Our guests loved the variety at the venue – there was so much going on. It has its own grain silo with a firepit and whisky bar, and we had a secondary firepit with cigars, sparklers and marshmallows. There was also all the animals on site to interact with. The atmosphere and the look when everything came together was amazing, but our favourite part of the day was our ceremony under the willow tree.

roving that a destination-style wedding is achievable on your doorstep, this romantic styled shoot evokes a French feel, with its vineyard setting and lavender tones. “Little Wold Vineyard lends itself to a Provence feel, with its rolling hills and incredible views,” says stylist Jen of My Pretties UK. “It was essential for our theme to have an undertone of romance, which is why we chose a real couple to model. Bethany and Mitchell are so happy and there was an endless supply of love and giggles all day!” Lavender hues with hints of blue and teal ran throughout the design. Exquisite patisserie, a showstopping croque-en-bouche, watercolour stationery and delicious wine all gave the shoot a certain je ne sais quoi. Enjoy!

hoot coordinator and photographer Nisha Keaton of Your Choice Photography envisaged an intimate styled shoot with a rich and opulent feel. Deep reds, decadent blues, plum and orange tones sit alongside luxurious textures of lace, velvet and free-flowing florals. “One of the greatest things about elopements and micro celebrations is the ability to truly be yourselves,” Nisha says. “You can surround yourselves with all the things you love the most.” The talented team of suppliers took the theme and ran with it. From showstopping floral installations to a dreamy cake and exquisite stationery. We adore that models Kristian and Gemma wrote love notes to each other, which were from a beautiful set from My Billet Doux. If you’re planning an intimate wedding, be prepared to be inspired…

VENUE STYLING

Style and substance Venue styling for the new normal

W

e’ve been on a rollercoaster of restrictions, social distancing and guidelines over the last year or so, with couples and the wedding industry constantly adapting to new regulations. We wanted to explore how weddings have changed in this time and how you can style three different ‘new normal’ celebrations, whether you’re going small, taking it outside or throwing the ultimate party to celebrate being reunited with loved ones…

Micro-weddings: A sweetheart table set for two provides an intimate moment for you and your partner to luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss. Alternatively, you could sit at a large family-style table to make everyone feel included.

So many couples have made the most of the situation and planned a smaller celebration. Will these intimate weddings stick around? And if so, how can you style them?

Smaller guest numbers means a more intimate experience. Consider personal elements to add to the romance such as photographs, flowers that represent you as a couple or nods to your shared interests. Use your ceremony décor to create a frame around you. Think moon gates or floral arches to make you the centre of attention. These can be moved to your reception space to make it more cost-effective.

With fewer guests, it’s easier to introduce meaningful details – handwritten thank you notes, monogrammed elements and bespoke stationery may have been unaffordable for a large event, but could be possible for just 30 guests. 49

The great outdoors:

Taking weddings outside means plenty of space, fresh air and making the most of our beautiful region.

Bring the inside out by carefully considering luxurious textures, ambient lighting and opulent styling touches to set the scene. Flowing drapes, gold crockery and decadent glassware will add the wow factor while statement pieces such as a chandelier hanging from a tree or festoon lighting guiding guests in will bring the drama.

Al fresco weddings allow you more space to really to go to town. By using zones you can have a ceremony area, reception area and party area. Why not add a luxurious lounge by bringing eclectic furniture outside? Dress with blankets to keep the chill off in the evening.

Never underestimate the power of lighting to create ambience. From fairylights and flickering candles to statement light fixtures, all will elevate your styling after dark. 50

The trick is to enhance your beautiful outdoor setting, rather than compete with it. Dress what is already there: hang flowers in jars from trees, line grassy walkways with lanterns and adorn natural structures with opulent drapes.

Go big or go home:

VENUE STYLING Want the ultimate party to celebrate when this is all over? We hear you!

Who said weddings have to be all ivory and blush? If the classic look isn’t for you, go bold with pops of colour, vibrant shades and daring palettes of opposing colours. We’re loving teal and gold, pink and red or yellow and grey.

For those who had a small ceremony during the pandemic, it’s now time to party. The great thing is, the nerves of the ceremony are over and it’s time to get into party mode! Fill your venue with mirror balls, coloured lighting and an LED dancefloor for the perfect first dance.

After the difficult times we’ve had, it’s time to get your glad rags on. Backdrops are big news to provide a focal point and epic photo opportunities to celebrate being reunited with friends and family. Try moon gates, handwritten fabric runners and neon signs.

Make your celebration all about interaction with super-cool cocktail bars, live music and a late-night VIP lounge.

HOT TOPIC Our experts answer your burning questions

https://drawnbylightphotography.co.uk

PICTURE PERFECT

Lisa Kershaw | Drawn by Light Photography | https://drawnbylightphotography.co.uk

BY ARRANGEMENT Q We’re having a classic country house wedding in summer. What floral styles will create a timelessly romantic feel? The country house style is so gorgeous, and one of our favourites when it comes to flowers! A style we’d suggest to suit this are mini meadows. They’re so versatile and be used anywhere from aisle décor and table centrepieces to large versions with more height to sit in front of the top table, which gives the impression of you both sitting in a cottage garden-style meadow. The blooms we find best for this look are British seasonal flowers, which is perfect for summer as we are right in the middle of our growing season. There’s an amazing selection to choose from, including delphiniums, sweet peas, garden roses and late-summer dahlias. Erika McManus & Samantha Taylor | Tweedle Floral Design www.tweedlefloraldesign.co.uk 52

https://elsielovephotography.com

Q We’re having a small, intimate wedding. How can we make sure we get amazing photos, while including our small guest list? In the last year I’ve photographed more intimate weddings than ever before, with guest lists of just six to 30 people. Small weddings often give you more control over your day, resulting in a relaxed feel and beautifully natural photos. There’s no need for a long list of group shots with endless aunts and uncles, instead you can take the time to be with your close family and friends. With a small group, I like to involve everyone in a confetti shot by having a semi-circle of guests with you in the middle to create a petal storm; this also works well with sparklers in the evening. You can use the extra time to go off with your photographer to take some lovely couple portraits that you’ll treasure forever. You could even head to a special place that means something to you both. You might like to consider splitting the time for portraits – one half just after the ceremony and the second half later in the day close to sunset.

RING THE CHANGES

ASK THE EXPERTS

Q My partner and I can’t find the perfect style of wedding rings. My friend suggested having them designed, but what’s involved in the process? Having your rings designed is such a special and romantic experience. Your wedding rings are something you’ll keep forever, which is why we believe it’s so important to get them right. The first step is getting some ideas of what you’d like – check out magazines and Pinterest for this. Even if the perfect ring doesn’t already exist, we can work with you to understand exactly what you want. Next, we’ll invite you for an initial consultation to discuss everything from design ideas to metals and gem stones. Your ideas are sent to our expert ring designers who will work with you to sketch them up. After approving the design, a 3D render and wax model will be sent to you for final approval before your rings are handcrafted here in the UK. No matter how many changes you require, a new design will be created for you. The result is rings that you’ll be proud to wear during a lifetime of happiness together. Dinah by Alan Hannah

DRESSED TO THRILL Q We’re having a glamorous black-tie wedding. What dress styles and accessories will make me look like an A-lister? What immediately springs to mind with this theme is men in dinner jackets, limitless champagne served in crystal saucers and super-glam women in beautiful designer dresses. Of course, this is all the stuff of movies. However, you can easily replicate this look without the high-end price tag, and there are some fabulous British designers out there that would be perfect to help you achieve this style. The dress should be clean-cut and beautifully structured in a luxurious fabric with elegance at its core. The glamour can be added with an up do hairstyle and dramatic yet sophisticated make-up. Finish it off with statement accessories to bring the sparkle for your own high-society wedding! Kerensa Dyson | Bijou Bridal Boutique | www.bijoubridalboutique.co.uk

Yorkshire bakers give us the lowdown on what we can expect from wedding cakes this season and beyond

hile we all wait excitedly for weddings to return, it’s not long before we start thinking about cake! But how will things change after the pandemic? Is the micro-wedding and single-tier bake here to stay? Or are couples going to go bigger and better than ever? We talk to some of the region’s top bakers to find out what they think cakes will look like this season and in the future…

www.facebook.com/icedfancies | www.cluskeysmith.com

“Isomalt sails or structures adorning the top tier of the cake is a big trend to look out for. They give a dreamy feel and can be edged in metallics for extra sparkle. Dried flowers are big news and I think this fashion will stick around. Both edible and non-edible florals look romantic on any cake and can be adapted to your own style.” – Samantha Sagar, Sammy’s Iced Fancies

www.sweetchic.co.uk | https://hayleybaxterphotography.com

“Romantic styles are here to stay! Who doesn’t need love after the year we’ve had to endure? Blush is a firm favourite; it oozes femininity and lends itself harmoniously to so many other colour combinations. Black elements add a dramatic twist to a design, try with either neutral shades or pairing it with metallics.” – Gina Morley & Gillian Mealor, Ginilla Cake Design

THE SWEETEST

CAKES

“Over the next few years I think cakes will become more simplistic. Tall, sharp-edge cakes have taken over from the traditional shorter tiers with round edges, and I think we will continue to move towards sleeker, cleaner looks. Ruffles and textures are still big, but they’re being paired with simple tiers to balance the design.” – Katrina Armitage, Katrina’s Bespoke Cakes

“The last year has cemented a love for elopement and informal wedding vibes as well as a taste for something alternative to tradition. With this in mind, the majority of our couples are opting for smaller cakes with decadent dessert tables. Buttercream sculptured cakes are a firm trend, with texture and rich colours like burgundy, burnt orange and green. For some couples, a vibrant splash of colour is a must!” – Helen Birkinshaw, Sweet Chic 55

“Wafer-paper techniques are proving popular, such as sails to create movement and texture or ruffles for an ethereal effect. We’re loving designs incorporating the Pantone Colours of the Year: Ultimate Grey and Illuminating Yellow. Grey represents assurance and resilience, while yellow is uplifting and cheerful – just what we need in these uncertain times!” – Gina Morley & Gillian Mealor, Ginilla Cake Design

“With larger weddings on the horizon, this doesn’t mean you have to blow your budget on a huge cake. Smaller weddings are just as exciting and you can give your bake the wow factor with dummy tiers and extra embellishments.” – Samantha Sagar, Sammy’s Iced Fancies

“If you’re going with an intimate micro-wedding, then cake styles can be easily adapted to suit. Individual desserts and mini cakes look amazing and give a personal feel.” – Samantha Sagar, Sammy’s Iced Fancies

“Abstract buttercream designs are proving popular, with couples leaning towards buttercream over fondant. Seminaked designs are still on trend, but with the addition of metallics to give them a contemporary twist. When it comes to flavours, my pistachio cake is being booked a lot and chocolate and salted caramel is super-popular.” – Rebecca Severs, Three Little Birds Bakery

“Flavour-wise, I have noticed my couples are becoming more adventurous, selecting obscure flavours like peach, pistachio and earl grey and pairing them with different fillings to make it bespoke. Thyme caramel, anyone?” – Katrina Armitage, Katrina’s Bespoke Cakes

“With restrictions lifting, I have noticed an increase in the size of cakes being booked, with many four-tier creations planned for 2022. We have been kept apart from our friends and family for so long that when the opportunity arises to celebrate, couples want to go all out. I’ve also had more bookings for favours and dessert tables. After all, the only thing better than cake is more cake!” – Katrina Armitage, Katrina’s Bespoke Cakes

www.threelittlebirdsbakery.co.uk

“We’re loving classic ice cream flavours such as Neapolitan, mint choc chip and rum and raisin; these delicious flavours are easily adapted to cakes.” – Gina Morley & Gillian Mealor, Ginilla Cake Design

“Cakes can still be showstoppers even when they’re small; decoration is everything. A beautiful cascade of flowers, either fresh or hand-modelled, can really set off even a one-tier design. The use of the right stand will elevate your cake to the status it deserves.” – Rebecca Severs, Three Little Birds Bakery

CAKES

“Cake design is so versatile and there are many ways to get the style you want into a smaller bake. However, if you dream of a multi-tiered statement cake, then dummy tiers can achieve the effect you want without all the leftovers. You could also have a smaller cake surrounded by a beautiful arrangement of sweet treats. The use of props like flower walls and cake stands can add the wow factor too.” – Gina Morley & Gillian Mealor, Ginilla Cake Design

BYE BYE TO DRY

When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

BEAUTY NEWS

ROSY GLOW

Some exciting newness from Pixi Beauty has hit the shelves recently and I’m nuts about the +Rose Glow-y Powder (£14) in particular. This silky soft, rose infused, https://youtu.be/EO3_TuWvc3E multi-use powder can be applied as a veil of blush or highlighter adding a touch of radiance and luminosity as it brightens the complexion. What’s more, the natural mineral formula contains ceremides to give time-release moisture to the skin. THE CLEANSING EXPRESS

Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk

POLISH PERFECTION

Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.

SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk

BE AT PEACE

Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com

HAIR REPAIR

If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 73

Q&A We get top tips and advice from our experts

My partner and I both want our make-up done professionally, but we’re getting ready separately with our own bridal parties. How can we make sure that we look fabulous and we’re both ready on time? We have a bespoke service for couples who want to get ready in separate locations with their own bride squad. We can offer you both your own team of stylists and make-up artists to attend multi-site locations to work with each bride, the bridal party and any guests. Each of you will then have your own dedicated team to create the look you want on your big day. We offer trials for all of our services to make sure that you are big-day ready. We understand that this will be one of the most important days of your life and you want to look radiant, elegant and beautiful. For more information on this service, check out our website. Lisa Kramer | The Style Lounge | www.thestylelounge.uk

FESTIVAL-CHIC We’re having a laid-back festival wedding. How can I get a relaxed make-up look while still feeling flawless? The key to pulling off relaxed make-up is nailing the skin. My go-to look would include a dewy-finish foundation while targeting any areas of concern, such as blemishes and discolouration, with concealer. This will give the ultimate skin-like finish. Colour-wise, I’d opt for a palette of creamy brown shades to give the complexion a soft, natural feel. Finish off with a sweep of highlighter across the high points of your face: the brow bone, cheekbones and cupid’s bow. For a hint of colour, add a peachy blush and lip – then you’re good to go! THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley

A

nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 76

Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry

strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair

BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrient-dense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution

to haircare. The integrity of a product and what hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients.

❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-ordeath situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 77

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

H

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

PRETTY AS A PICTURE Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.

Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.

We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

A room full of candles is a must!

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row of diamonds that match my engagement ring.

I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for a very natural look.

Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.

This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 79

The darling buds

fo May

Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade IIlisted Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dog-friendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.

STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy village-green

views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort, amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.

EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with

guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.

EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morris-designed stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a wellearned pint makes it all worth it.

BOOK IT: Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis. Visit www.thealicehawthorn.com 88
