Blooming gorgeous!

Ijust can’t help it. Every issue, reading about your special days get me wiping away a tear or two at my desk! This edition, Chelsea and Max tied the knot at Whirlow Hall Farm and as they stood in front of their loved ones, they announced they were expecting a baby – and yes she has the cutest little bump showing in her lace dress. Perfection! If, like me, you love a real wedding, you can also read about Amy and Rich’s love-filled day at Middleton Lodge on page 27; and Victoria and Sam’s fairytale nuptials at Ripley Castle on p32.

This issue, we have a fabulous styled shoot themed around a bride and her gals. If you’re currently choosing your photographer, make sure you show them this shoot for inspo! There’s a reason you chose these wonderwomen to be your bridesmaids so make sure you have plenty of shots with them by your side! Our second shoot, photographed by Lucy Dennis Photography is utterly dreamy. If you’re a little bit hippy and a little bit folksy, you’ll love the retro, vintage feels!

If that’s not enough we have so many local experts lending their advice on how you and your bridal party can look your best on the big day. As well as this, there’s our beauty q&a and our gorgeous fashion editor, Claire, giving us the inside scoop on what’s hot off the catwalk!

Rustic romance

Rich proposed on Amy’s 29th birthday. Amy admits that after hinting for some time, she was so excited and shocked at the moment that Rich got down on one knee – just after putting their two little ones to bed! Rich says, “Amy always stood out from the crowd, she has beautiful eyes, she’s very outgoing and chatty. I thought she was definitely too good for me, we blend well together.” The big day took place on 27th April, 2022 at Middleton Lodge some of her favourite moments from their big day...

27 REAL WEDDINGS

We wanted natural, rustic, country-style décor. We tried to use ecofriendly products wherever we could.

Accessories were kept simple with a floor length veil and an old locketthat belonged to my nannan and given to my sister - my something old, something borrowed. I also wore a little blue bow underneath my hairfrom my little girl.

My dress was from Hoops-a-Daisy in Huddersfield. I knew I wanted something with a low back but went in with an open mind to try on all styles. When we had a few tears from my mum and my little boy said I looked pretty, we knew it was the one.

My dad’s first look – it was quite an emotional moment; one I don’t thinkI’ll ever forget. Rich and my dad’s speeches were also tear jerkers!

Middleton Lodge was beautiful – the country garden wedding I’d always wanted. As we drove away, Rich’s response was ,“I guess we’re getting married there.” A few days later, it was booked!

We had ‘save the bees’ seed packets as wedding favours, and wooden place names, table names and other information boards.

28
Our centrepieces and flowers were created by Wedding & Events Floral Design. Right as we said ‘I do’ - we had a fly over from the RAF fighter jets with their sonic booms – it couldn’t have been timed better if we’d booked it! The groom and groomsmen wore the same suits, hired from MossBros. These were sage herringbone three-pieces with tan shoes. We continued the rustic feel with a semi-naked wedding cake, and kraftpaper cake boxes. Our confetti was dried flowers in greens and creams. Showstopping flowers! My bridesmaids wore sage green multiway Lipsy dresses – with a lot offlowing fabric – this was perfect for one of my bridemaids who foundout she was expecting!

We revamped a tipi with cushions and throws for naptime andplaytime for restless children. We had a band perform at our evening ceremony named White Rabbit. They were a huge hit with the guests – some not leaving the dancefloor all night. The day was memorable from start to finish. Our photoshoot after theceremony was special. We spent so much time laughing, I think weforgot our photos were being taken. Having the photos to look back on,makes me smile over and over. 30

a time...
of Sam and
McKay
Castle, Harrogate was what dreams are made of! Images
Hamilton Photography ONCE UPON 32

Sam and Victoria met at work.

Victoria tells us, “We realised we had a lot in common, liked the same things and found ourselves eating pizza and drinking wine at the local restaurant shortly after.” During lockdown, on Christmas morning Sam proposed. Of course, Victoria said yes, and wedding planning began!

On 28th May 2022, at Ripley Castle, Harrogate, the pair said their vows. Here, Victoria tells us more about their day...

SETTING THE SCENE

Traditional, beautiful, classic. That was the couple’s order of the day and that’s exactly what they found with Ripley Castle in Harrogate. Victoria reminisces, “The venue was breathtaking. When we walked into the castle grounds there was no turning back and after meeting Rebecca and the team and seeing inside, it was everything we could’ve wished for. The vision of the drink’s reception on the terrace and the various rooms in the castle for different sections of the day – it was just perfect.”

With such a fabulous venue, Victoria and Sam were keen to carry the classy theme throughout the day and chose neutral tones and decorated the tables with beautiful white roses and dark foliage. Blossom Tree Cake Company in Harrogate designed the cake – a three-tier white and light champagne icing with ruffled bottom adorned with iced white roses.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Victoria looked picture perfect. She chose her dream dress from Ava Rose Hamilton in Silsden – a Stella York design in head-to-toe lace with a statement train. Her bridesmaids all wore individually made, peach, floorlength dresses with a design chosen by them to suit their shape and style.

Sam wore a charcoal suit from Hawes & Curtis with a white shirt, white paisley tie from Eton, finished with a white pocket square and white rose buttonhole. The groomsmen also had a charcoal suit from Owen Scott in Huddersfield with the same accessories but instead with a grey paisley tie.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

For Victoria and Sam, there was only one way to celebrate! Victoria explains, “I was previously a professional Latin dancer and so for our first dance, I taught Sam a routine, inclusive of lifts and tricks to entertain the guests.” Of course, this went down a storm! Following this, the party continued with a DJ playing popular songs, all part of their wedding package from Ripley Castle.

She adds, “It was truly the best day of our lives. Everyone said they’d never been to a more sincere, genuine wedding and it felt that two families were coming together forever.”

TIMES

like these...

Chelsea and Max Wainwright tied the knot at Whirlow Hall Farm. Amongst family, friends and their beloved dog Jac, the couple had one extra announcement to share…

Images courtesy of Sasha Lee Photography

Chelsea and Max met online and had an instant connection just speaking on the phone. The couple were actually living 90 miles apart at the time (Chelsea in Sheffield and Max in Ruthin, Wales) and started commuting to see each other at everyWhenopportunity.askedabout the proposal, Chelsea casually replies, “There wasn’t a proposal. We’d talked about getting married for a while and just booked the venue when we realised it should just happen. We booked the entire wedding before announcing it to anyone! The date was arranged to be as close as possible to the anniversary of our first date.” And it doesn’t get more romantic and heartfelt than that!

Laid back vibes all the way, Chelsea and Max did ‘the legal bit’ at Sheffield Town Hall the day before the reception. Chelsea tells us, “We just had our mums as the witnesses. We’d planned on just doing it on our own and grabbing two witnesses but the mum’s caught wind of this and we got told off a bit!”

The following day, on 24th June, 2022, Chelsea and Max repeated their vows in front of all their friends and loved ones at Whirlow Hall Farm. “It’s a really relaxed venue and that’s all we were after.” Chelsea adds, “As a charity organisation, holding our wedding there was supporting their important work.”

Full of surprises, the pair even had one extra one up their sleeve to make their day one they’ll never forget. During their vows the couple announced they were pregnant. Goosebumps anyone? I certainly do!

Here, Chelsea tells us more about their utterly perfect day.....

39 REAL WEDDINGS

The legal day was the perfect opportunity to have fun in front of the camera and get used to having our photos taken with guests the following day.

On Saturday, the dress and veil were from Emily Bridal. The dress was bought pre-pregnancy but they managed to change my fittings ensuring the dress definitely fit. Lace had been a must from the start for that more relaxed look. It showed off our growing bump perfectly.

All the table decorations and centrepieces as well as the bouquets, were flowers provided by our local florist Hollow Meadow Flowers. They sustainably grow cottage garden and wildflowers which lead to a very natural feeling and fit with the farm perfectly.

Whirlow Hall Farm is really local to us. It’s really relaxed and that’s all we were after. The ceremony was conducted by Chelsea’s sisterin-law Anna – it was perfect!

On Saturday, Max wore a suit and tie from City Gate in Chester. Cufflinks were a gift from myself, one engraved with the co-ordinates and date of our first date, and the other the co-ordinates and date of the wedding.

At Sheffield Town Hall, the day prior to the main reception, I wore a relaxed off the shoulder dress bought online, perfect for a growing bump!
40

The venue décor was done by Mark and Nikki at Wild Wedding Days. I don’t know how we’d have coped without them.

We had several cakes made by the local Secret Cake Club. We wanted a selection of treats and they did not disappoint. Our main cake, featured, was a Victoria sponge

Nerves were obviously felt but far less than we had imagined. It was great seeing friends and family – some of which we hadn’t seen for a long time. Having them all there together to celebrate our special day was amazing.

We didn’t have a wedding planner but Wild Wedding Days practically did this for us. They’re clearly so passionate and experienced and were so excited to be back doing weddings after the pandemic. There wasn’t a question they couldn’t answer.

To fit with the more relaxed theme we didn’t have a table plan –we had Whirlow Hall Farm provide their BBQ, which lead very much into people mingling even whilst eating.

I’ve always been a bit dinosaur crazy and wanted them in somewhere. It had even been joked about me walking down the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme song.

41 REAL WEDDINGS

A speech sent by one of Max’s best friends, who unfortunately couldn’t attend due to deployment was delivered by Max’s sister. Without even being in the same country he managed to make everyone laugh.

It was announced during our vows that we were pregnant! A lot of the wedding party didn’t know and it was lovely telling everyone at the same time. We’d found out the day I was going on my hen do and with the help of my friend had managed to hide it from everyone there.

Max was based up in Scotland for a while whilst in the marines and we’ve done lots of travelling around Scotland together, along with our sheepdog, Jac. We thought a ceilidh would be a good way to get people dancing that wouldn’t ordinarily and would fit into the farm/ barn setting well. They even provided a DJ for after.

The evening catering was pizza from Wood Fired Pizza company – the guests loved them! It was great watching our pizzas prepared in front of us then cooked.

The Peak Edge Hotel was the destination for this styled shoot which celebrates the importance of a bride and her besties Images courtesy of Amy Woodham Photography

When planning your big day, remember to take time for some special photographs of you and your girls. This styled shoot, photographed by Amy Woodham Photography was organised by Jodie Knott of Knotted with Love.

Jodie describes the day, “The surrounding countryside provided us with the inspiration for our botanical themed shoot, and whilst foliage was key we wanted to highlight the floral aspect throughout the viridescent palette. Nestled in the outskirts of the Peak District, the hotel was perfect thanks to its beautiful backdrop and grounds, and the perfect balance of rural retreat and modern chic.”

Though the inspiration was botanical, the focus of the day was on the bride and her bridesmaids. As Jodie emphasises, “A wedding is the celebration of two people, however any bride will tell you about the importance of her girls, so why not emphasise that on this shoot?!”

Working in her studio located in Knaresborough, north Yorkshire, Valerie spends her time designing and hand making hats and headwear for many special occasions such as weddings, the races, tea parties ‒ you name it. Valerie’s extremely proud of her customisable Ready to Wear collection; and Bespoke: one-of-a-kind headwear.

Valerie takes inspiration from nature’s colour pallet and her travel adventures to create some beautiful hats. Valerie marries traditional millinery techniques with contemporary styling and materials to create individual, vibrant hats and headpieces. She moulds and shapes materials such as sinamay, fine silks or even tweeds by hand or using wooden hat blocks. After that, the real work begins, from wiring, covering, sewing together and finally adding trimmings. She adds, “I use a variety of materials from silks and leather to beads and feathers.”

Valerie offers her clients a one-to-one service where she spends a lot of time getting to know her client and their story behind the hat. “It’s so important that the hat reflects the wearer’s personality, and they wear it with confidence and excitement on the day,” says Valerie. “Positive feedback is the biggest reward; it all comes down to that one moment when you hand over the hat to the customer. It’s a wonderful feeling to create an accessory from scratch which completes an outfit for a special occasion and the customer feels the best version of themselves on that day.”

NATURAL BEAUTY

How can I create the perfect natural look without it feeling too heavy?

Hydration is a key factor. Your skincare routine can play a major role in the effectiveness of your make-up and the overall finish. Choose a light or medium coverage and use a damp beauty blender to apply. Only use a light powder where necessary and then seal the look with a good setting spray.

JEWELS AND GEMS

I’d like to give my bridal look an extra touch of glamour. What would you suggest that’s hot for autumn/winter weddings?

For that extra touch of glamour, I’d suggest a slide that has deep coloured gems on, maybe pick out a shade that’s in your bouquet or colour theme. This will add a subtle bit of glitz and works particularly well with Hollywood waves.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub £13, www.glossybox.co.uk100ml,

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial £24,Cream75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, www.lookfantastic.com15ml,

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology! £28 for four masks, https://patchology.co.uk

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors. £127.50, https://germaine-de-capuccini.co.uk

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body. £18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it

WEDDING-READY SKIN

We all know stress can play havoc with our skin and let’s face it, planning a wedding can be trying. Peace Out skincare has a range of solution-based products to ensure your complexion is picture-perfect on your big day.

It all starts with the prep and so it’s time to bring your A-game… vitamin A that is! Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Start using three-months prior to the nuptials to ensure you’re wedding ready.

Tips for looking your big-day best

Whether you’re the bride, groom or one of the bridal party, you’ll want to look your best on the big day. So, to help you choose the perfect look, we’ve asked local suppliers for their tips and advice MEET DOUGLAS FROM 01756CINDERELLA’S791007|www.dreamdress.co.uk

My top tips on how couples can find perfect bridalwear or bridesmaids dresses are firstly ask friends and family for recommendations from recent weddings. Have an online search in your area to find all the suppliers near you, check their Facebook pages for recent posts, look for updates about new styles instore or due in soon. Look for recent reviews online to gauge the level of service you’ll receive. YouTube videos on shop and supplier’s websites are great to see how the dresses flow and move when walking helping build a better picture of the dress than just still photos.

Secondly, visit wedding fairs to talk in person to the shop owner and staff before booking in to visit. Thirdly, read printed and online magazines for the latest on-trend styles.

Before you book, ask the retailer what their prices range from and whether they alter wedding dresses in store. You can also ask whether they have any new stock in recently or arriving shortly? It’s also handy to check how many people you can bring along and how many dresses they allow to try per session.

Some on-trend styles to look out for include square necklines, full skirts, big statement piece dresses, and plain dresses (think satins, crepes and mikado’s).

Please do remember to get in touch straight away as often wedding dresses take eight months (standard service, rush services sometimes available) to be made and have the fittings ready for the big day. So, I’d recommend 10 months to start looking and trying on styles.

Do remember, wedding dresses are a specialist item to alter and if the shop you buy from is unable to offer this service make sure you have a reputable seamstress available before you buy. All dresses need altering either under the arms, shoulders or length – or all three. Cinderella’s alter in store and allow one month to complete the alterations which is built into our eight months’ order timescale.

Finally, to complete the formal wedding look, the Prince Charlie jacket always requires a full dress sporran.

Wedding kilt etiquette

So, you’re planning a wedding and you plan to wear a kilt? Good choice! The kilt is a staple of Scottish wedding tradition and a great way of showing your proud Scottish heritage. But there are some things to know about wearing a kilt to a wedding, and what to wear with it.

What to wear with your kilt?

Formal: For a more formal wedding, we recommend the traditional evening attire with a Prince Charlie jacket. This highland dinner jacket comes with short tails at the back and three buttons down either side. Along with this jacket, and your kilt, it's best to wear a three-button waistcoat, a plain shirt (normally white), and a plain bowtie (either black or matching the colour of the jacket).

Semi-formal: For a semi-formal daytime wedding, you may instead opt for an Argyll or tweed jacket instead of a Prince Charlie. This is both more contemporary and would fit better with a five-button waistcoat plus a coordinated tie matching your tartan.

To complete the semi-formal wedding look, a semi-dress sporran will do, these come in a variety of styles to suit your individuality.

Either way: Whether formal or semi-formal, you should also try to make sure the colour of your hose (socks) complements the rest of the outfit. And remember – avoid white! Your hose should be cream, coloured, or black. Whatever the colour, we recommend wearing these with traditional black ghillie brogues.

Accessories lowdown

You should also consider a few extra accessories to finish off your wedding look...

Kilt flashes: Strips of tartan (matching your kilt) to hold up the hose and add extra decoration.

Kilt pin: Traditionally pinned at the bottom of your kilt, this pin is an important part of the kilt. Some Scottish men will show off their clan heritage by wearing a pin with their clan crest.

Sgian Dubh: A small, single-edged knife with a protective case, sheathed in your sock on the outer side of the leg (the same as your dominant hand).

This is a really exciting time for couples and every minute should be enjoyed! Often by the time our grooms-to-be call in to view suits, the wedding theme or colour has been chosen. While we advise to keep an open mind, we suggest our couples bring colour swatches and any pictures of looks they like to give us an idea of their style or taste. It helps us get an idea of the overall look the couple want to achieve. Pinterest is a great way to do this.

In our stores, we own all of our stock, so the customer can try on different styles in the size they need to get an idea of different combinations and how these will fit. Any alterations are done free of charge for our hirewear and are usually completed the week before the wedding. While this may seem last minute, we have such a quick turnaround that this is the best way to fulfill all requirements. Any final adjustments can be done in five to10 minutes as we have the luxury of an alteration facility on site.

I personally recommend going for a timeless look. Lounge suits and morning tails will never date and you’ll look back on your photos in years to come and still love it. However, tweeds have been huge this year and look great for a boho, rustic-themed wedding.

Due to the popularity of some styles we advise to book as soon as you

know the outfit you require. This gives us time to order any extra stock required and helps avoid disappointment.

In addition to our hirewear, we also offer ready-to-wear tailoring to purchase from leading brands including Hugo Boss, Roy Robson, Remus Uomo and many more. Our custom-made service allows you to create a suit that's one-of-a-kind to you, and takes care of specific requirements from colour-themed lining and matching buttons to the wedding date embroidered on the collar or inside pocket. KERENSA FROM BOUTIQUE

Purchasing your perfect wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses for the biggest day of your life is not like any other item of clothing. This is where the expert help of a bridal boutique consultant can be worth his or her weight in gold! Every bride wants to look her very best on her wedding day and there are so many designers, dress styles, colours and fabrics, that it can be incredibly overwhelming right at the start. My first top tip is to start wedding dress shopping a good 12 months before your wedding date. It will give you a chance to visit a handful of boutiques to try on different styles to get a feel for what suits your shape and what you feel comfortable in. Secondly, keep the number of boutiques you visit to a minimum and try and keep it local to where you live so that when it comes to making any minor alterations to your wedding dress, you don’t have to travel to the other side of the UK to get them done! Who needs that kind of travel stress when you’re on the countdown to the biggest day of your life! Thirdly, you want a trusted business with excellent reviews about their customer service to look after your needs and so do all the important research before booking any appointments. Check out their socials and the website to get a feel if the bridal boutique could be the right fit for you.

All bridal shops carry a variety of styles to suit most tastes but if you have a particular designer dress in mind, don’t book at a boutique before checking that it has what you’re looking for. It could be a waste of your valuable time if they don’t carry the styles that you prefer and it might leave you feeling a little deflated. Research is key!

Skincare is essential for the run-up to your wedding day as it’ll be on full display for everyone to see.

Here are our go-to tips for brides and grooms:

1. Eight weeks before the wedding day, book in for a facial treatment. This will help to clean out any clogged pores and help to reduce the breakout of spots.

2. Eight weeks before the wedding, start drinking plenty of water with lemon. This will wash away toxins from the body and skin.

3. Six weeks before the wedding, moisturise your skin morning and night. This will help to keep your skin hydrated.

4. Four weeks before the wedding day, book in for another facial treatment to help your skin glow on the big day.

5. Three weeks before the wedding, start to exfoliate once a week for the whole body. Your skin will be smooth and glowing for the big day. Men often forget to exfoliate their faces.

6. Two weeks before the wedding day, get a good pedicure to remove hard skin to make it more comfortable in your shoes for the big day.

7. One week before the wedding book in for a full body massage to help with stress and tension. This will help with tight muscles.

8. The night of the wedding try to have a good night sleep. Moisture your face and body before going to bed this will help with hydration of the skin for your makeup artist the next day and drink plenty of water.

It takes four to eight weeks for your skin to make changes, and it takes five to six weeks for people to notice the changes in your skin.

Consider your vision before you shop. What colour, style and fabric are you thinking of? How do you want your bridesmaids to look on your big day? Do you want everyone to wear the same style or are you willing to mix & match to find dresses to suit everyone’s shape and style? This is becoming increasingly popular with brides as they want everyone to look and feel their best on the day.

Secondly, budget. It’s important to discuss budgets with your

bridesmaids especially if they’re paying for their own dresses or contributing to the cost. Knowing what your budget is helps you to know what brands are suitable for you and can help with your vision. Consider the cost of any alterations as well as not all dresses fit perfectly.

Thirdly, allow plenty of time. Give yourself time to make your decision. Bridesmaid dresses can take anything up to 14 weeks to arrive plus you need time to arrange alterations as well. Plan a girl’s day out with everyone and after a busy day deciding make your reward a fabulous dinner with a bottle of fizz to celebrate!

Lastly, our beauty tips for the bridal party! Don’t try any new products in the week up to your big day but start investing in your skin and hair in the months before so you look and feel amazing on the day.

To reflect the changing season from autumn to winter we would suggest working with darker tones and plenty of textures. Using different winter foliage, berries, dahlias and roses would create a beautiful seasonal feel to your special day.

FEELING BLUE

I’m stuck on finding a ‘something blue’ please help! We love the idea of making things personal, so adding a little detail in blue such as covering the bottom of your wedding shoes in blue glitter or hand embroidery in blue with the wedding date inside your wedding dress. A personalised blue denim jacket for brides or flowergirls is a great touch and can be used before and after the wedding too! However, the cutest way to introduce blue, is for your flower girl to be wearing a blue tutu!

into our wedding cake. Do you have any ideas of how to do this?

Absolutely! I love getting to know my couples and what they’re passionate about. There are many ways to incorporate your love of travel into your cake design from simple table dressing using suitcases and passports as props, to subtle hints using bespoke cake toppers with slogans such as let our adventures begin Moving on to bespoke cakes, you could choose a novelty style cake, for example, 3D carved suitcases or travel-related stencils or silhouettes. You may wish to reflect your favourite place in the world using colours and associations from that place to tie into your wedding theme for a more subtle nod to your love of travel.

COOL FOR KIDS!

I’m inviting children to our wedding. I know that the speeches can be boring for little ones. Any suggestions to keep them amused? There are lots of ways you can keep children amused on your big day! Weddings can be a long day for little ones anyway; and keeping them entertained during more boring parts of the day such as speeches can be a challenge. We offer tipi kids corners which offer a cosy space for little ones to play. Areas like this can include games and colouring books/ pencils, you can relax knowing your little ones are keeping busy and most importantly, not causing a fuss! Speeches also offer an hour for younger children to relax and take a nap before the long night ahead. For this reason, we always style kids’ corners with lots of comfy cushions, rugs and blankets to ensure there’s a little space for them to rest if needed. Our kids’ corners can be set up indoors or outdoors, however our top tip would always be to choose an indoor option! The last thing you want is for your guests to be going outside every five minutes to check on the kids. Let’s face it… speeches can be difficult enough without more distractions! By having the kids corner indoors, parents can relax and fully enjoy the speeches knowing their little ones are safe and having fun!

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).McFarlane

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon). There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to theDubrovnikairport!

is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on someWecocktails. hadafarewell

meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.  destination

94

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Ourwedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details and madesure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minute meetingwith her to run through the plan for the day, which we found was agreat help and meant we knew exactly what to expect. I recommendbooking a venue with a dedicated wedding coordinator or hiring anexternal company, so that you can relax and enjoy yourself withouthaving to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening reception thatwould get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazing trio wholearnt our first dance song and incorporated some of our favouritetunes into their set list. We were a bit worried that people would getbored or restless throughout the day, but all of our guests were quitecontent chatting during the drinks reception, and I’m quite glad wekept things scaled back as it allowed us to catch up with friends andfamily who we hadn’t seen in a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’t meet untilthe morning of the wedding. Originally, this made me feel anxious butthe whole process went smoothly, and the ladies conducting our servicewere calming and reassuring. We incorporated promises to each otherin our vows that we felt represented us as a couple. For those of youabout to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, asthere’s nothing more special than looking into your partner’s eyes andtelling them how much you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.
