EDITOR’S LETTER

Winter warmers W

ell, here we are at the end of the another year. Is it me, or did 2023 fly by faster than usual? Mind you, with the pandemic growing more and more distant in our rear view mirrors as weddings embrace a sense of back to normality, it’s no wonder really. The highlights for me were the Coronation and Carlos Alcaraz’s brilliant win at Wimbledon, as well as getting to see some more of Europe and, of course, celebrating Your Sussex Wedding’s shiny new website! When you’ve read this issue, why not have a look around? There’s plenty on offer to keep you ahead of the curve with your wedding planning. Autumn was unseasonably warm, so I have everything crossed from some chilly weather this winter; especially for those of you with cosy December or January nuptials in store. Summer’s all well and good, but the time comes when it’s great to just snuggle up in your favourite jumper and curl up with your spouse-to-be in front of your favourite Netflix show, or better still, with your tablet and favourite wedding magazine! This issue we go all out on the romance front as local photographers show us the look of love. Meanwhile, if themes and palettes are on your mind, turn to our annual venue styling feature, where you’ll find all the inspiration you’ll need fresh from our lovely local suppliers. Finally, for a touch of winter magic, check out our Hot Topic pages where Sussex’s experts tell us how to bring the joy of the season to your nuptials. So as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

If you’re looking for a talented photographer to capture your big day, have we got news for you! The exceptional Andy Kerr Photography has been on fire this year, winning no fewer than three prestigious awards (International Wedding Awards – UK winner, Luxlife’s Best Emotive Wedding Photographer in London and the Home Counties, and Prestige Business Awards UK Wedding Photography Company of the Year). Andy says, “I’m beyond thrilled to be acknowledged by these awards. This is due to my passion for giving couples incredible, magazine-worthy images that are authentic, dynamic and emotional memories, allowing them to relive the excitement of their day every single time they look at them.” As well as the quality of the photography itself, the judging panels also recognised the Andy Kerr Experience that all couples receive. He elaborates: “We believe the experience should be as memorable as the images themselves, and as special as the couple. From the first point of contact through to the wedding, and afterwards, we offer our couples a wonderful customer service – a stress-free journey that they thoroughly enjoy and remember forever.” As one couple recently pointed out: this was the highlight of their wedding planning. Spotlight on...

EASTBOURNE TO RYE Tie the knot in a local hotspot

THE GEORGE IN RYE 01797 222 114 | www.thegeorgeinrye.com The George in Rye is located in the heart of the beautiful and romantic town of Rye. Among its meandering cobbled streets and pretty halftimbered houses, in the heart of the town’s citadel is where you’ll find this gorgeous venue. Effortlessly warm and welcoming, the hotel is part-medieval with later Georgian additions. Lovingly restored in 2022, it offers an eclectic mix of quintessential English and contemporary elegance. St Mary’s, the parish church of Rye, dates back to the 12th century. Located at the highest point of the town, it’s just around the corner from The George presenting a memorable ceremony option for you. Alternatively, The Georgian Town Hall, with its distinctive facade is just up the hill from The George and within easy walking distance. and popcorn in the retro foyer, bar and terrace areas. The team want to make sure your day is exactly how you’ve dreamed it, so they aim to deliver bespoke ceremonies of which no two are ever the same. Once all guests are assembled in the auditorium (up to 271), the wedding party will head down the aisle. In fact, due to the nature of the building there are two aisles, so usually one family will walk down one and the other down the second. The two of you will then join each other on stage for introductions, readings, exchange of vows and the ring exchange. Wedding drinks receptions for 271 guests can take over the whole building. After the ceremony, the space is held for an hour-and-a-half for everyone to celebrate. The bar and kiosk are opened up, alongside the balcony and auditorium for guests to purchase drinks and gather to wish you both well.

REAL WEDDING

G

race and Mark met through work and decided to give coupledom a shot at the Christmas party back in 2016. Fast forwarding four years we find the couple on top of Cheddar Gorge near Glastonbury, where Mark popped the question. The original plan was to propose a few months earlier, while they on holiday in South Africa, but unfortunately Covid put a stop to that. But the new version on home soil was definitely an incredible surprise for Grace who of course said, “Yes”! The date was set for 27th August 2023 at Brookfield Barn, which they’d been drawn to by the lake and beautiful views. Here, Grace tells us all about W-day...

SETTING THE SCENE Armed with a dusky blue and gold palette and subtle Harry Potter theme, the couple set about planning their special day. Guests’ wedding favours were key-shaped bottle openers, reminiscent of the flying keys from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Meanwhile, the table plan featured blue and gold wax G&M seals, which complemented the overall colour palette. These also appeared on the elegant place names. The couple’s faux-flower centrepieces included blue and white flowers with foliage that had decorated the ceremony aisle earlier in the day. The wedding party’s flowers were fresh and the bouquets, buttonholes and corsages all featured blue delphiniums, white roses and eucalyptus. Grace and Mark opted for a two-tier semi-naked cake with the largest tier being Victoria sponge, and the next carrot cake. This was accompanied by some delicious raspberry ripple and chocolate cupcakes. Grace and her mum put in a lot of hard work creating many of the finishing touches including an order-of-the-day pallet sign, sign post, menus complete with wax seal, Harry Potter wands, dried petal confetti and more. Everyone enjoyed a barbecue for the couple’s wedding breakfast with chocolate brownie and vanilla cheesecake for dessert.

LOOKING THE PART Grace looked stunning in a lace sheath double-train ivory wedding dress. “I chose it due to its hourglass-enhancing shape and subtle shimmer,” she says. She wore her hair up in a boho-style textured low bun with a hair vine and simple elbow-length veil. Grace wore her engagement ring on the opposite hand, moving it back to the correct finger after the ceremony once the wedding ring was in place. She also accessorised with a necklace similar to the Heart of the Ocean from Titanic. She wisely chose to wear wedding trainers from Lace & Favour – Oakley. Mark wore a slim fit grey suit with tan check by Antique Rogue. He paired this with a white shirt, mustard-coloured tie and white handkerchief as his pocket square. His groomsmen all wore mid-grey suits with white shirts, dusky blue ties, and white pocket squares with blue flowers. Grace’s bridesmaids were dressed in dusky blue gowns from Coast. They were all the same colour but different styles. The ladies all accessorised with white Converse. 33

REAL WEDDING

CELEBRATE IN STYLE Live band Riptide entertained revellers in the evening, and went down a storm. “We’ve had multiple comments from guests since the wedding about how amazing they were,” Grace shares. The couple also laid out lawn games during the day for guests to enjoy before and after the ceremony, which proved popular too.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “For me, seeing Mark and our daughter, Oakley, waiting for me at the end of the aisle was the highlight,” says Grace. Little Oakley wanted to stay with mummy and daddy throughout the ceremony, but kept saying, “Eat, eat,” at regular intervals! “It was well past her lunchtime,”laughs Grace. And continues, “Having almost all of our favourite people in one place at one time was incredibly special and its likely this will never happen again, so we soaked in as much of the atmosphere as possible.”

THE GREAT ESCAPE The couple headed to Cyprus for seven nights on honeymoon. Grace planned the trip as she won the hotel stay through her work. “We travelled with our two-year-old, so it wasn’t a particularly relaxing honeymoon, but we did enjoy the time together as a family,” Grace remembers.

REAL WEDDINGS

Home SWEET home Nicholas and Michael’s love bloomed over a series of DIY and home improvement projects Images courtesy of Annabel Healy Photography

39

N

icholas and Michael met on Tinder during one of the national Covid lockdowns. They chatted online for a while until it was safe to meet up. But even then social distancing restrictions were still in place, so they were forced to resort to a MacDonald’s car park – “Very classy,” laughs Nicholas. “At the time Michael wasn’t openly gay,” Nicholas tells us. “It was all very new to him, and I was his first date. It was all very hush hush, so it was fun sneaking around, meeting up, talking and getting to know each other.” The couple even share the same birthday, and Michael is three hours older than Nicholas! The two found that they were wonderfully in sync and more often than not think the same way. Nicholas purchased a house later that year and the couple spent most of that Christmas break together renovating, painting and doing bits and bobs to the house to bring it up to scratch. Once Nicholas had officially moved in, they both spent much more time together. Before long though, it was on to another project, this time a bungalow and this is where the relationship really started to take off we’re told. “Michael didn’t really leave, and he found the courage to tell his friends and family the truth about his sexuality and who I was,” Nicholas explains. “His experience of coming out and being accepted was a good one. His friends didn’t bat an eyelid and his parents were very welcoming of me.” Michael asked Nicholas to marry him bright and early one December morning, while the couple were still in bed. Nicholas was presented with a beautiful platinum ring with an inset diamond, and the two spent the day with his family. “Everyone was super happy for us,” he says. When Nicholas and Michael went to visit The Milwards Estate, owner Claire opened the door in her welly boots, which made them feel instantly relaxed. “This wasn’t a big corporate venue with no soul, this was her home and you could see she loved it,” Nicholas says. They found the place, calm, natural, open-minded and easy-going and on returning home from their tour, they rang Claire right away to secure their date, 17th June 2023. Join us as Nicholas tells us all about the big day...

Waking up knowing it’s your wedding day is the most incredible feeling in the world! Everything we’d planned was due to happen in a matter of hours. Our best men, Larry and Daniel, were there helping us get ready and Michael’s sister, Amy, had flown back from Australia to be with us too.

Our suits were Ted Baker. We both wanted to be in blue but not exactly the same. I went for a lighter, baby blue top half with dark trousers, while Michael opted for a full, dark navy blue suit. My bow tie and Michael’s tie matched along with our pocket squares.

We both wear glasses, so we purchased new Ray Bans and had the lenses changed so we could actually see! I also wore my grandfather’s tigers eye gold ring so it felt like he was part of our day.

We had buttonholes for the men and wrist corsages for the ladies. One of our flowergirls had a little basket full of flowers, while the other carried a wand. 40

REAL WEDDINGS

The arrival was the best feeling. Our entrance song was Sunchyme by Dario G. Our unsuspecting guests didn’t know how we were going to arrive and it was the talk of the wedding! My transport was a white Rolls Royce Ghost, and Michael’s friend, Christian, owns a helicopter so he was more than happy to fly him in.

Laura Rushbridge, our celebrant, personalised our ceremony to the point where I cried when I first read it though.

A big part of my outfit was the Christian Louboutin tan shoe with red sole. During the ceremony the estate’s ducks seemed to gravitate toward them. I was later informed that they like the colour red!

Our flowergirls’ dresses were blue floral, which they wore with little white ballet shoes. Pageboy Jack wore a navy suit to match his uncle Michael’s, while Luca wore little blue shorts and a white T-shirt to complement his uncle Nick. We asked our groomsmen to wear blue but we didn’t pick their suits or restrict their choices. We found our wedding favours on Etsy. They were silver key bottle openers with a tag that read: ‘The key to happiness is love and the ability to open a bottle.’ Very fitting for us as Michael loves his cider and I love a G&T!

We had a choice of five canapés and our wedding breakfast was a traditional roast dinner followed by a trio of puddings. In the evening we all enjoyed a hog roast with salads and a cheese table with crackers and chutneys. 41

Our other favours were two little glass bottles. One filled with port, one with Tequila Rose. These were for personal toasts. One for my grandfather, Alan, who passed six months before our wedding and the other for Michael’s dear friend Wibbs. As you can imagine these were very emotional and full of love for these amazing men who didn’t get to our wedding.

Our centrepieces were tall gold stands, which held large blue and white florals. We went for these as we felt they were masculine but had a soft touch to them. Plus, they worked with our stationery.

We met Helen from The Incredible Cake Company at a wedding fair. We later visited her store, where we sat down and discussed what we wanted. She nailed it! The bottom tier was chocolate, the third was Victoria sponge, the second was lemon drizzle and the top was a fruit cake, which we’ve saved for our first anniversary.

“We’d like to dedicate this feature to Alan Downes and Kevin Higgs, our two angels who didn’t make our wedding.”

In the evening, singer Russell Higgins entertained us all. We found him on Facebook but had also heard him play in our local pub. He was brilliant and our guests loved him. Once he was finished we had DJ for the rest of the night.

THE W-DAY TEAM

We found the place names on Etsy and purchased the PDF; we then had them printed at Tansleys Printers in Seaford. They also printed our wedding signage: welcome to our wedding, unplugged ceremony and the table plan.

Our amazing photographer, Annabel, captured everything beautifully.

REAL WEDDINGS

Together FOREVER

Natalie and Josh tied the knot at Tottington Manor on 7th October, 2023 Images courtesy of Love Heart Photography

N

atalie and Josh met at a party 13 years ago, and Josh proposed in 2016 just before Christmas. He’d intended to pop the question in Paris on New Year’s Eve, but collected the ring early and was so excited, he couldn’t keep it a secret any longer! He booked a restaurant in Brighton instead and happily Natalie said, “Yes.” “Tottington Manor is a stunning venue and such a special place for our family,” Natalie says. The date was set for 7th October 2023 for their big celebration there. The legal ceremony had actually taken place in secret in Las Vegas earlier in the year. Read on as Natalie tells us more... 45

We both absolutely loved our whole day, it was so special to us. One of our best friends officiated the blessing for us, since it didn’t need to be legal.

Our florals and bouquets all included plenty of green foliage with white hydrangeas and roses, which looked beautiful in our South Downs venue.

Our wedding favours were disco balls to reflect the party lovers we are; while our centrepieces featured more disco balls, hurricane vases and candles, with white hydrangea floral arrangements. 46

REAL WEDDINGS

We had a fresh flower arch with clear acrylic sign, which read: The Ellis’s, which formed the focal point of our celebrant-led ceremony. Our florist then returned the following day to deconstruct it and make it into bouquets for our friends and family who’d stayed overnight.

Our bridesmaids looked beautiful in white crepe maxi dresses, Esmee.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake, we opted for doughnuts! I wore an Essense of Australia gown, and Josh wore a black tuxedo from Dickies of Hove.

We enjoyed canapés after the ceremony and there were Sussex grazing boards for everyone in the afternoon. During the evening guests were served hot bowl food. 47

Live band Breakthrough entertained everyone during the evening celebrations and kept the dancefloor full. Josh’s dad played the guitar during one of their breaks, which was amazing.

We went on a mini-moon to Cornwall together following the celebrations while the grandparents had our children. It was perfect. Our main honeymoon was in Las Vegas when we were officially married.

Our cake cutting ceremony was actually a doughnut swap, before we poured a Ridgeview English sparkling wine into a tower of champagne glasses.

My top tip is to pick the right venue with a team who can help you every step of the way.

Pay a little bit more for the best professional suppliers. Ours helped to guide some of our decisions. Don’t give yourself too much to do, allow yourself time to enjoy the day.

The heart

OF SUSTAINABILITY This gorgeous shoot was created to show how you can create an ultra chic, ever-popular rustic wedding day with sustainability at its heart Images courtesy of Sarah Carmody Photography

A

s each year passes us by, it becomes all the more important that we’re aware of ways we can reduce our carbon footprint when planning a wedding,” says Jude Hesselgrave, owner and founder of Wickerwood Farm. “Unfortunately, the wedding industry still has a long way to go to eliminate the huge amount of waste it produces.” Jude continues, “On average here in the UK, each wedding produces more than 14.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, that’s equivalent to the carbon footprint produced by the average household for a whole year. With annual weddings averaging 278,600 in 2022 it’s a frightening statistic when you do the maths.” Wickerwood Farm, an outdoor wedding venue fast becoming known for having sustainability at its heart, hosts a limited number of boutique weddings each summer and the team is proud to continue flying the eco flag within the UK wedding industry. Crucially, Wickerwood Farm doesn’t host back-to-back weddings, and the team believes that by hosting fewer events each year the venue’s carbon footprint is kept down; plus the farmland is given time to

recuperate. A number of services are also available through the venue such as planning, styling, and day management, as well as a furniture and prop hire service. This all helps to make planning much easier for its couples, and importantly helps the venue to become even more sustainable. Much of the land at Wickerwood isn’t mowed, instead these areas are roped off to protect wildlife and pollinators, not only offering a natural habitat for wildlife but also creating a beautiful and organic setting for weddings to take place. A number of young trees have also been planted with many more scheduled for the coming years. This chic rustic shoot demonstrates just a few simple and hugely effective ways your wedding can be beautiful and yet sustainable. Jude says, “What I often suggest to couples is to choose suppliers carefully when planning their wedding. It’s useful to research and read reviews. Are they local to the chosen venue? Do they have a sustainable ethos?” Which is exactly how the collaborators were carefully chosen for this shoot project. 51

T

he first time I set foot in Two Woods Estate, I knew I wanted to do a wintery styled wedding collaboration, with wow factor,” says photographer and shoot coordinator Vix Paine from VP Photography. This wow factor, as well as showstopping drama, came in the furry shape of these gorgeous wolves, as well as some jaw-dropping gowns and accessories. The shoot’s dress supplier, Katie Sykes, says, “Soft autumn-inspired hair and make-up, paired with alternative bridal gowns, and sharp suits came together to make this shoot something special.” Along with its stunning red, burnt orange and yellow flowers, dramatic styling and vintage Chevy, not to mention the wolves we’re already oh-so in love with, everything here works in perfect harmony to present to you some really wild wedding inspiration. 55

hatever your big-day theme, vibe or vision, there’s on thing we can all agree on: weddings are all about love. It might be easy to lose sight of it amid the chaos of planning, but nevertheless it’s the reason we’re all here. Weddings celebrate love in all its forms. Of course, everyone is gathered to celebrate the love between the two of you, but they’re there because they, in turn, love you. There’s also the pride and adoration on the faces of our couples’ parents or guardians that we can’t wait to see in our real wedding features. Even capturing a misty-eyed look from, or for, a beloved fur baby warms the heart. Certainly, we could all do with some good cheer so, we decided to ask the county’s wedding photographers to share their favourite loving looks.

While rust was proving popular for 2023 autumn and winter weddings, its softer spring/summer counterpart is looking likely to take weddings by storm in 2024. Think coral, peach, blush and gold. Simply stunning!

“While sage greens and dusky pinks have dominated wedding palettes in recent years we’ve seen more orange and brown tones appearing, and 2024 is predicted to bring a resurgence of bold and vibrant colours. We’ll see more couples choosing rich jewel tones, vibrant blues and striking metallic accents.” – Fiona Sharkey, Ashdown Events

The Pantone colour of the year always influences the nation’s wedding suppliers who love the challenge of incorporating it in their wedding designs. 2023’s Viva Magenta took off like no other before it, so we can’t wait to hear what will be announced for 2024!

“I believe we’ll see a rise in fresh and calming sage green paired with delicate hues such as ivory, earthy neutral tones, blush pink, and powder dusky blue. These gentle colours create a dreamy ambience, perfect for outdoor ceremonies and romantic receptions. Every year when we talk about colour trends, greens never go away. They look stunning all-year round, from spring to winter.” – Joanna Ward, Inspiration Decor

o, you’ve booked your venue, the next thing to think about is how to turn this blank space into the wedding you dream of. With a professional venue stylist on hand this is a piece of cake! From props to palettes, tablescapes to backdrops these folks have a world of wonder at their fingertips to help them make your day uniquely you. We caught up with some of the county’s talented venue stylists to find out what’s at the top of their hotlists for 2024 when it comes to palettes, themes and props.

We delve into the world of palettes, props and more to help you style your dream wedding

“In 2024, we’ll also see a rise in bold and vibrant colours. For those who love to make a statement, this will be the year of breaking free from traditional palettes and embracing unique details that reflect both style and personality. The use of bright, energetic colours will infuse the day with positivity and joy, creating a memorable experience for all.” – Joanna Ward, Inspiration Decor “As 2023 comes to an end, many weddings are beginning to embrace pops of colour with a surprising contender being yellow. We’ve noticed couples taking a step back from palettes filled with natural colours in favour of placing their focus on the statement hues within them. An ombre of different tones of yellow is a great way to interpret this, from soft pastel yellow to bright sunshine yellow, all the way to a deeper golden mustard. You can weave these tones throughout the day via your flowers, bridesmaids’ gowns, décor and stationery.” – Sally Gallis, Luna And The Lane 67

“Many will embrace bold and vibrant hues and opt for oversized floral arrangements featuring exceptional blooms and exotic flowers, turning their weddings into a botanical paradise.” – Joanna Ward, Inspiration Decor

“Intimate weddings are expected to remain popular in 2024. Couples are opting for smaller guest lists allowing for more personal experiences. Smaller weddings also offer the opportunity to celebrate in unique and unconventional venues, with a more relaxed, informal decorative style.” – Fiona Sharkey, Ashdown Events 68

“Today’s wedding world can be an overwhelming place with so many choices. So, we advise our couples to focus on the nonnegotiables, the elements most important to them.” – Sally Gallis, Luna And The Lane

Luna And The Lane © https://amyfaithphotography.com

“Disco has proven to be a popular theme in 2023, but 2024 seems to be ramping up a gear with more of a 70s retro vibe. We predict the use of kitch details on tables, anything goes... the more absurd and captivating the better!” – Sally Gallis, Luna And The Lane

“Many don’t want to have a cake-cutting ceremony any more, but do want something sweet and so opt for a dessert table, complete with doughnuts of course!” – Sally Gallis, Luna And The Lane

Eco-friendly weddings are rightly coming to the fore. With eye-watering amounts of waste created from every big day, sustainability is a crucial consideration going forward. Hiring your props rather than making or buying makes a significant contribution to this.

We’ve seen more couples embracing the champagne tower, and some opt for this as an alternative to cakecutting. An opulent symbol of celebration, there’s something of the old-school Hollywood to them.

“When it comes to styling elements and props, we’re all for the clashing trend! A mismatch of design offers a less formal feel to a wedding. It can be done in a multitude of ways, a contrast of patterns, fabrics, textures and colour. There’s something very beautiful about juxtaposing chic cut glass with rustic vintage metals.” – Sally Gallis, Luna And The Lane

HOT TOPIC: WINTER VIBES

Our experts offer stellar advice on creating your own winter wonderland wedding THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

www.andykerrphotography.com

Andy Kerr of Andy Kerry Photography (www.andykerrphotography.com) says: Winter, such a fantastic time for wedding photos, and adding a seasonal twist can really create a magical and romantic atmosphere. The first thing to remember about capturing great images is that photography is all about the light, and in the winter this can be challenging with shorter days and overcast skies. So, leave it to the professionals who have experience in overcoming these hurdles, and you can be sure of stunning images to treasure for a lifetime. If you’re lucky enough to have a snowy backdrop, the camera will tend to underexpose and add a blue tinge to the image. The fix is to compensate for this in the camera settings. After all, who wants blue snow? If you’re wearing a white dress, standing in front of something with a darker background will also help to avoid you blending in. Something to bear in mind when it comes to your wedding attire and décor is that choosing deep, rich, seasonal colours such as burgundy, red, forest green, or navy can evoke a wintry feel. Also, fairylights and candles, for example, create a lovely warm, intimate ambience. Finally, have a backup plan for indoor photos in case of extreme weather. Make sure your photographer visits your venue in the run up to the big day to check out the best backdrops, inside and out, as well as features that will make your images look amazing.

FESTIVE FAVOURITES Kate Tym and Kate Dyer, also known as Kate & Kate Celebrants (www.kateandkatecelebrants.co.uk) say: We love a winter wedding! Snuggly venues, log fires, greenery, Christmas trees with baubles, fairylights and candles everywhere, mulled wine on arrival to warm everyone up... Warmth is a must, so think velvet, feathers and pashminas, plus a spare pair of outdoor shoes for photos – there’s nothing worse than a soggy Jimmy Choo! Flowergirls and pageboys can have the look of magical little elves, while bridesmaids can rock the winter theme in burgundy or scarlet. As for the ceremony itself, pop a cracker on every seat to start things off with a bang and, of course, that means a paper hat on every head for full-on festive fun. A Christmas carol or Christmas number one can provide you with a sing-a-long to really lift the spirits – Winter Wonderland is one of our favourites. Stick your vows inside a giant husband or wife Christmas card – so kitsch it’s cool – and, of course, for the kiss, it’s got to be under the mistletoe! Finally, on exit forget confetti, it’s party poppers all the way – you’re definitely going out with a bang!

ASK THE EXPERTS A TOUCH OF FROST

www.cherryredphotography.co.uk

Chrysanthi Kanari from Your Creative Moments (www.yourcreativemoments.com) says: Congratulations, you’re getting married in the winter! So, how do you enter into the spirit of the season? I’d say fur, feathers, a veil and an assortment of accessories would give you an advantage in showing your creativity and sophistication. We’ve designed a range of themed collections in different colours including hair accessories and boutonnières to dress to your whole wedding party, bringing an extra touch of wintry elegance to your big day. What’s your preferred colour?

WINTER WARMERS Caroline Turner from Vanity Flair Boutique (www.instagram.com/Vanityflair_boutique) says: A winter wedding can be truly magical but will need some extra planning to protect you from the cold temperatures outside. It’s important to stay warm on your wedding day without affecting your style. A shrug or wrap can give an elegant look and feel to any wedding dress while staying stylish and keeping the cold at bay. You can then remove it once inside ensuring the least impact on your overall look. Layering is a must, from wraps, shrugs, boleros and shawls, to cardigans and long coats. After all, no bride wants to be shivering while enjoying her dream day. Or, if you want to veer away from the traditional, a leather jacket would be an edgy, modern choice. Finally, when choosing your dress, perhaps think about a thicker fabric such as satin to help you stay warmer.

LADY IN SILVER Sue Marshall from Lady M Occasion Wear (www.ladymsussex.co.uk) says: The mother-of-the-bride or -groom should always be sure to take account of the climate when choosing an outfit and opt either for one with sleeves, a jacket or a bolero. A little fur shrug can look very glamorous too in the winter and will keep the all-important ladies warm if photos are being taken outside. Navy blue, burgundy or dark greens are popular choices for autumn or winter weddings, however I love a vibrant colour such as Ispirato’s dress in jade green, which would look fabulous with an oyster-coloured fur shrug. If your wedding is around Christmastime, then this John Charles silver dress with feathered sleeves, diamanté and a full skirt is both glamorous and warm while giving off a real Christmassy vibe. You can match it with a silver feathered hat; or if you want to go one step further, a silver outfit like this one could also be teamed with a hat or fascinator in festive green or red. Psst... Both dresses discussed, plus fur jackets and shrugs are available at Lady M Occasion Wear in Newick, Lewes. 71

Q&A

A TOUCH OF SPARKLE

WINTER’S TALE

How can I give my make-up look a wintry twist?

How can I give my nails an elegant wintry vibe?

Becky Flynn from Makeup by Becky Flynn (www.makeupbybeckyflynn.com) says: I love keeping make-up fresh while adding some depth during the colder months for a more wintery feel. On the eyes, a wash of gold or silver across the lids feels festive, as does adding some depth with a bronzer or cooler-toned eyeshadow in the outer corners and crease. Fresh skin is in, so lots of creamy, hydrating products are called for as the complexion can look and feel quite dry in the colder months. Something like Glossier Futuredew all over with a cream highlighter such as Vieve Skin Dew on the cheekbones will look beautiful when the light hits your skin on those dark, winter evenings. Then, grab your favourite blusher and apply a little more than usual for a fresh, flushed, in-from-the-cold look. A lot of people love a darker lip or a pop of red in the winter, which always looks beautiful around Christmastime with a glittery eye. If you’re wanting something more subtle though, try taking your favourite nude lip colour and mixing it with a tiny amount of a darker shade, like red or plum, to add depth while keeping your lip neutral.

Yasmin Dyson, managing director of Features Beauty (www.features-beauty.co.uk) says: First, you’ll need to decide whether you’d like short or long nails for your wedding day. If you’re unsure, our expert advice would be to go by the length of your fingers. For short fingers, we suggest longer almond-shaped nails. If you have long fingers though, we recommend a short to medium nail length with an almond or square shape. Depending on the length you decide on, you could either have nail extensions applied, or attend the salon for regular BIAB (builder in a bottle) appointments leading up to your wedding. The latter is a super-strong base coat that not only maintains the health of your natural nails, but also adds the strength they need to grow to the desired length. Next, is the all-important design. For a subtle, timeless look we do love a classic French or ombre. You could even add a touch of glitter or delicate white flowers for a wintry twist. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something different, we’re currently loving chrome powders, which can be used over a white to create an icy look. Or, opt for a milky base with white marble for a multi-layered effect. We’d advise visiting your chosen salon for a trial nail appointment with the design you choose prior to the big day to ensure it’s exactly what you’re looking for.

WELLNESS

Well grounded If wedding planning stress is getting the better of you, take this time-out with Ground Wellbeing’s Peigin Crowley

A

n award-winning spa consultant Peigin Crowley has spent more than 20 years crafting distinctive and transformative wellness products and treats for fivestar luxury properties. But in 2020, her attention shifted to the home. Experiencing the devastating impacts of stress, burnout, loss of identity and disconnection from the natural world, she embarked on a quest to create products and at-home rituals that could easily be incorporated into a daily self-care routine. Today her brand, Ground Wellbeing, continues to grow, focusing on craft and quality over quantity, sustainable business practices and the promotion of accessible and intuitive self-care for all. Committed to the power of touch, the brand’s rituals are created by Peigin to deliver carefully developed massage treatments through her years of work as an aromatherapist, where she gained a deeper sense of empathy, compassion and understanding. She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.

sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.

TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.

BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

Beauty queen

We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty

H

annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.

Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 84

There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.

INTERVIEW

How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.

What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin

The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 85

Shakeup was founded in 2020 by twin brothers Jake Xu and Jake Carnell-Xu. They were inspired by the massive rise in men’s beauty in Asia and the K-pop market. With more men than ever branching out with their beauty routines, the duo created Shakeup to provide affordable, innovative, and solution-driven skincare and cosmetic products and are on a mission to normalise men wearing make-up. Together, Shakeup and Neil have launched the new Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream. Combining caffeine, squalane, shea butter, and two revolutionary trademarked ingredients, it instantly tightens, refreshes, and revives tired-looking eyes, dark circles, fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. Neil adds: “I’m really excited to be teaming up with Shakeup. Daily demands and hectic schedules can take their toll on my skin, but looking after it properly is crucial, especially in my line of work. I love Shakeup’s products; they give great results with minimal effort and are great value. A winning combination!” Check out www.shakeupcosmetics.com for more information.

BOTSWANA

SEYCHELLES

Hilton’s signature hotel brand is set to open its first resort in the Seychelles. Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island lies just over 130 kilometres south of Mahé on a pristine atoll fringed by palm forests and protected by its own lagoon and coral reef. Much of Platte Island’s surrounding scenery remains untouched, meaning guests are likely to see native Hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, manta rays, and whale sharks. The resort will be home to 50 seafront villas, all equipped with private pools and personal concierges. For more information, visit www.hilton.com/en/brands/waldorf-astoria

Sitatunga Private Island is a new water-based safari camp in the upper reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Built on a raised, wrap-around private deck, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate four adults in two private suites. Constructed almost entirely of recycled materials, the camp offers couples a ‘slow safari’ that is as sustainable as it is luxurious. The suites come complete with an indoor lounge, bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas, as well as a private pool with views over the lagoon. Dereck Joubert, the CEO of Great Plains, tells us: “Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the ecodesign boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day.” Discover more about Sitatunga Private Island and its offerings at www.greatplainsconservation.com/safari/sitatunga-private-island

The Italian dream

Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village

F

or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.

on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.

RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY

The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.

Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.

FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.

LOOKING FOR MORE?

Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.

For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.

DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my

Since its grand opening in June 2022 it has won many accolades including Britain’s Best Hotel by The Times and the Sunday Times, topping their list of the Top 100 Places to Stay in the UK. So, it was only right for us to check it out for our couples. Located between Newbury and Hungerford, this 18th-century country house hotel & spa is the perfect spot to unwind pre- or post-wedding whether you want a cocktail aside the heated outdoor swimming pool; or are ready to don your hiking boots and clear your mind on the close-by North Wessex Downs. You’re so warmly welcomed as soon as you enter the lobby lounge. Waiting at the reception desk was a lovely couple sipping a glass of wine checking in – yes you get a glass of the good stuff on arrival - and who was at their feet but two four-legged friends. Living the life of Riley, these pampered pooches were also looking forward to their stay in one of the several dog-friendly rooms. They even get a doggie welcome pack on arrival! With a crisp rosé in hand, I check into the Sutton Suite. An interior designer’s dream, sunlight pours into the room which overlooks the surrounding countryside. It’s warm and inviting with whimsy wallpaper, mix-match plush textiles and the prime centrepiece, the stunning copper roll top bath, is just waiting to be enjoyed. With a private mini bar, as well as raiding rights to the pantry (yes, there’s a pantry where you can help yourselves to snacks and drinks!), you’re guaranteed to switch off, unwind and feel truly spoilt. When it comes to food and drink, 1772 Brasserie offers a fine choice of contemporary dishes for all tastes. I chose crispy chilli squid followed by Berkshire lamb rump, cooked to perfection.
