Project Overview

West Haven Elementary, an interactive and inclusive school, is located in West Haven, Utah. They have reached out to our team for collaboration with interior design and architecture within their preschool sector. Our design sector includes developing and designing an effectively used standard preschool classroom space and a highly anticipated media center. Typical preschool classrooms will be able to accommodate more than 10 students as the media center will be the heart of the school. The design will follow West Haven Elementary’s mission to help each individual student develop a sense of Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity.

Childhood Learning Research

During our research about early education learning, we have made the following discoveries:

• Scaling down furniture and ﬁxtures creates a sense of importance for the children

• Natural features such as wood and neutral colors help enhance the children’s sense of calmness

• Accurate lighting, dimmable lighting and natural lighting are important in enhancing the children’s experience

• Acoustics should be enhanced throughout the classroom to provide reduced noise levels

• With integrated learning, movement is best within classroom; this includes desks that provide movement between lecture and team based models

• Designing ﬂexible layouts help with mobility throughout interactions in the classroom

• There are a variety of ways we learn; therefore, we must design a variety of spaces where learning occurs

Concept - Camp Discovery

Living in West Haven, Utah, the preschool class at West Haven Elementary is immersed into a nature-like conservatory where each individual child discovers who they are and explores the wonders this world has to offer. From camping-like reading nooks to nap time under the clouds, the preschool classrooms and school media center provide a safe haven for children to thrive in. West Haven Elementary aims to transform the lives of its students by providing an expansive curriculum and an inspiring atmosphere to make sure each student flourishes to their greastest potential.
