Letter from the Editor Woof! And, Happy New Year! New Year is a time of reflection, and new beginnings. It is a time of new resolutions, and new adventures. And as the winter sets in, and the magic of snow covers our cities (or, at least, for those of us who are lucky enough to experience it, this time of year) we couldn't think of anyone better to represent this issue than the polar bear, himself. Meet Birk: a white, fluffy Samoyed polar bear from Norway. We sat down with his humans to discuss their past adventures, and their traveling plans for the new year. They also offer us some useful advice for traveling with our pups. In this issue, we learn about the history of the Samoyed breed, and meet the Most Famous Samoyeds of Instagram! We also feature our favorite Winter Designer Pawlection: Tiffany's Pet Accessories. As always, we include the latest of dog fashion from Barker's Bazbark, the latest of dog sports from Spawrts Illustrated, and the latest of dog travel from National Pawgraphic. We hope everyone has a happy and fresh start to the New Year! May it be filled with new opportunities, and new plans for adventure! Till next time, XOXO,

New Year New Year is a time of new beginnings, and new pawdventures. And, Samoyeds make great adventure pawrtners! From hiking the mountains, to parasailing, these pups aren't afraid of anything, except maybe, for water. At least, that is true for Birk! Birk is a 4 year old Samoyed polar bear from a Norwegian island called Valderøya, located on the West Coast of Norway. He is one of the two Samoyeds in his family. Together, with his humans, and his brother, Oso, they go exploring the four islands in Giske Kommune; including Valderøya, Giske, Vigra, and Godøya. They also love driving to the Sunnmøre Alps, to enjoy beautiful mountain views, with hundreds of high peaks; which takes them two hours, by car and ferry. Birk's family chose the Samoyed breed for several reasons. Birk’s dad is allergic to most dog breeds, and a Samoyed is one of the few dogs that is hyperallergenic. Secondly, Birk’s humans wanted furry companions for active lifetsyle; dogs who can keep up with their regular hiking adventures. And, they also believe that a Samoyed is one of the most beautiful dog breeds in the world, and we can’t argue with that! These fluffy, white, bears are just adorable, and they make amazing adventure partners. This year, the family is planning to visit a much anticipated place called Lofoten, in the North of Norway.

New Pawdventures Birk’s humans also shared some traveling tips for dog parents who wish to travel with their pups. (1) The easiest way to travel with your dog is by car. You can make stops, on the way, when needed to walk them. And, you'll also be avoiding all the travel requirements, and the additional fees that go with flying. (2) Dogs can travel safe in their crate, or with special carriers, that are properly strapped. (3) Always bring enough water, food and a First Aid Kit for emergencies. (4) And, most importantly, never leave your dog alone in the car, especially when it is hot and sunny out. If you do decide to fly with your dog, make sure to check the specific requirements with your airline, prior to your departure. Some places, like Hawaii, have a 3-month long process. Usually, a proof of Rabies vaccination and a health certificate are required. Dogs also need to be registered on the plane, in advance, and have their own plane ticket. Emotional support animals used to be considered as "service animals" in the US, and didn't require a separate ticket, but laws have changed as of January, 2021.

10 FACTS ABOUT BIRK 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10
Birk has 5 siblings. He is in touch with 3 of them via Instagram. Like a bear, Birk loves to hibernate and can never get enough sleep. His favorite foods are meat sausages, Cheez Doddles, and VOM. Squeaky balls are his favorite toys. Birk goes crazy for sheep, which is his herding gene kicking in. His favorite activity is going on hiking adventures with his family. With seashore and mountains, Godøya is Birk’s favorite place to be. Birk is not a swimmer. He will avoid water, and wet surfaces, at all costs. He is very cuddly, especially in winter, when it gets colder. Birk weighs 66 lbs which makes him about 10 times smaller than a polar bear.

Breed Highlight: Samoye 78
The Spitz Family According to the American Kennel Club, the Spitz breed comes from arctic climates, with origins in Scandinavia, Russia, North America, and Asia. The word “spitz” is a German word which means “pointed”. Physically, most spitz breeds have a wolf-like appearance that includes pointy, pricked ears, almond-shaped eyes, a heavy, double coat, and a feathery tail carried over the back. All of these features help keep them warm when the temperatures drop. According to AKC, there are between 50 and 70 distinct Spitz dog breeds, with 16 AKC recognized Spitz breeds, including (1) Akita (2) Alaskan Malamute (3) American Eskimo Dog (4) Chow Chow (5) Finnish Lapphund (6) Finnish Spitz (7) Icelandic Sheepdog (8) Keeshond (9) Norwegian Buhund (10) Norwegian Buhund (11) Norwegian Lundehund (12) Pomeranian (13) Shiba Inu (14) Siberian Husky, (15) Swedish Vallhund & (16) Samoyed. The Samoyed is one of the largest of the powerful Spitz breed. Samoyeds take their name from the Samoyedic people, a semi-nomadic people from Asia who migrated to Siberia a thousand years ago.
BREED OVERVIEW GROUP: Working HEIGHT: 19 to 24 inches WEIGHT: 35 to 66 pounds COAT: Long, double coat HYPOALLERGENIC COLOR: white LIFE EXPECTANCY: 12 to 14 years
The History of the Polar Bear Breed
The Samoyed is a medium-large sized herding dog with a thick, white, and double-layer, hypoallergenic coat. These beautiful and graceful dogs stand anywhere from 19 to 23 inches, at the shoulder. For generations, these dogs were used as companions and reindeer guards. They are smart, social, and mischievous pups who demand love, and attention. The Samoyed breed has also been identified as a basal breed that predates the emergence of the modern dog breeds of the 19th century, suggesting that they’re connected to the ancient arctic lineage. In the late 18th century, Arctic explorers introduced the Samoyed to England.
Queen Alexandra was a huge admirer who promoted the breed as a companion and a show dog. Descendants of her dogs appear in many English and American kennels today. In America, a sparkling white dog named Moustan of Argenteau made history in 1906 as the first of the breed registered by the AKC. American and European mushers of the early 20th century were big fans of the breed, for Samoyeds were capable of sledging one and a half times their own weight. Scott, Shackleton, and Amundsen were a few of the era’s famous explorers who rode behind Sammies through frozen expanses. In fact, Samoyeds have also accompanied Roald Amundsen in his successful landmark reach of the South Pole in 1911.
