The New Heights of Dog Fashion & the Rise of Designer Inspired Couture The Golden Age of Dog Fashion

Celebrity Influence Social Media

In recent years, a fascinating trend has emerged on the streets and social media feeds: modern dog fashion. What was once a quirky niche for pet enthusiasts has transformed into a significant cultural phenomenon, blending style, function, and, most importantly, a deep affection for our furry friends. As the lines between human and pet fashion continue to blur, it’s clear that the rise of modern dog fashion is more than just a trend—it’s a testament to the evolving role of pets in our lives.

The rise of dog fashion can be largely attributed to the influence of celebrities and social media. High-profile figures like Paris Hilton have famously dressed their dogs in designer outfits, bringing pet fashion into the spotlight. Instagram and TikTok have further amplified this trend, with accounts dedicated solely to showcasing dogs in stylish attire garnering millions of followers.

From Practical to Pawsh: The Evolution of Dog Apparel Historically, dog clothing was primarily functional. Items like coats and boots were designed to protect pets from harsh weather conditions or hazardous terrain. But as pet ownership has become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, the focus of dog fashion has shifted from mere utility to a fullfledged style statement. Today, dog fashion encompasses a wide array of garments, from high-end couture to casual streetwear. The transformation from practical pieces to luxurious outfits reflects a broader cultural shift, where pets are seen as beloved family members deserving of their own sense of style.

and

Platforms like Instagram have become digital runways for pets, where dog models and influencers set fashion trends and collaborate with major brands. These canine celebrities not only flaunt the latest trends but also help normalize and popularize the idea of dressing up pets, making it a mainstream activity rather than an eccentric hobby.

Fashion Furward: Trending?

What’s

Modern dog fashion is as diverse as the pets themselves. From bespoke suits to cozy hoodies, there’s something for every dog’s personality and lifestyle. Now, let's take a closer look at some of the hottest trends in contemporary dog fashion: (1) Designer Fashion, (2) Functional Fashion, (3) Seasonal Fashion and (4) Eco Friendly Fashion.

1.

Designer Fashion High-fashion brands have entered the pet market, offering everything from luxury pet accessories to custom-tailored couture. These designer pieces often mirror human fashion trends, allowing pets to sport mini versions of the latest styles, and twin with their humans.

Functional Fashion

3.

Seasonal Fashion From holiday-themed outfits to summer swimsuits, seasonal fashion allows pets to participate in celebrations and enjoy the changing seasons in style.

2.

With the rise of active lifestyles, practical yet stylish gear is on the rise, too! Think waterproof jackets for rainy days, reflective vests for nighttime walks, and ergonomic harnesses that combine comfort with aesthetics.

4.

EcoFriendly Fashion As sustainability becomes a key concern in fashion, eco-friendly pet apparel is gaining traction. Brands are now offering garments made from recycled materials and organic fabrics, catering to environmentally conscious pet owners.

FROM FASHION TO RUNWAY

NYFW WITH YODA

This season, NYFW runway was graced not just by human models, but by a delightful pack of canine companions strutting their stuff with unparalleled flair. One of them— Yoda, a Chinese crested hairless fashion model from Montreal, Canada. We sat down with Yoda's momager Dominique to learn all about Yoda's first runway experience. Yoda walked his first runway at NYFW, for Anthony Rubio, this year. Tell us about it. How did this happen? As we jumped into dog fashion to keep Yoda warm, we found exceptional designers that were creating amazing clothes for pets to give back to all kind of pet organizations. Anthony Rubio was our favorite! So I emailed him to say how amazing his creations were and how crazy we were about getting one! We asked how we could order something, and the answer was lovely and so surprising: Anthony loves Yoda, so he invited us to his Show in New York the following weekend! Wow! Talk about amazing timing! How was the show? And how did you like the collection? What did Yoda wear? Who did you meet? Anthony Rubio’s NYFW show took place in the wonderful Angel Orensanz building. Mr Rubio was showing his Spring collection. Yoda had the pleasure to walk the runway with the beautiful Abbey Christine, wearing a silver dinner jacket featuring white embroidery and sky blue paillettes. Yoda had the chance to meet a bunch of pretty cool hooman models but he was most excited to finally meet some his furry model icons, such as Miley Jo the Chorkie, Gizmo in Manhattan, Bastian and Brews, and Bogie and Kimba!

Sounds like a lot of fun! Tell us about Yoda's fashion career. When did he get into the wild world of modeling? How did that happen? I adopted Yoda when he was 8 weeks old. He was so tiny and always very cold, as he is a naked breed. He had such a funny look to him. A lot of people were asking questions, not knowing about Chinese crested hairless. So I opened an Instagram account for Yoda in May of 2022, a month after taking him home, and that's where our journey begins! I received a ton of offers within the first week to model for all kind of companies. So we started by helping a small Canadian company, and then we've been adding new creators that share our personal values. We never imagined that we would do Haute Couture one day, but here we are, helping others one fashion item at a time! What are some of the brands that Yoda modeled for? Yoda has modeled for several brands, including Fluffy Butt Designs, Shantelle Design, BFF Eternal Love, Pea Tots, FURB,The Original Potato, Jordan Valentino Label, Anthony Rubio Designs and DOGUE Swag. We love to promote healthy lifestyle habits for both pets and their humans and we enjoy working with small businesses and creators that we connect with. Our Fashion journey gave us the chance to meet exceptional people! We ended working on so many fun and inspiring projects. What’s the most exciting project that you’ve worked on, so far? We are now Canine Patrol for St-Jonh Ambulance! We have the big privilege to visit people in need of affection and support while experiencing any life di culties! This is, by far, the most rewarding activity we had ever done! To learn more about Yoda, find him on Instagram @yodalexplorateur

LALA SHINES AT DOLLY PARTON'S PET GALA Lala, an 8-year-old Pomeranian from Marlborough, is no stranger to the limelight. Lala is a fashion model and influencer who appeared on runways of New York and LA Fashion Week, and has become an internet sensation. And, more recently, Lala dazzled audiences nationwide in Dolly Parton's Pet Gala! The two-hour event, which aired on CBS and Paramount+, featured a one-of-a-kind runway show and concert with the best in dog fashion, including embellished looks from Parton's Doggy Parton pet line.

The highly anticipated TV special featured Lala alongside a stellar lineup of celebrities, including Dolly Parton, Kelly Osborne, Carson Kressley, Jane Lynch, Lainey Wilson, Jessica Simpson, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Bell, Kristin Chenoweth, Margaret Cho, and other amazing pets. We sat down with Linda White, Lala’s momager to get some insights into this iconic dog event.

You got work with a legend! How did this happen? Lala is signed with Pawsitively Famous. Her agent, Dawn, reached out to us asking if we would be interested in submitting Lala for a ob she had in Nashville.

The ob turned out to be a two hour CBS special that Dolly Parton was doing. We immediately said yes! In December Dawn reached out to tell us that Lala had been chosen to participate as one of the 25 pup stars. Lala, my best friend Fiona and I flew out to Nashville for 5 days on January 26th.

What was it like meeting and working with Dolly, and all the other celebrities? On the first day, Dolly came out to the studio to personally meet each dog and their owner. She was very kind and beautiful. When she came to Lala she said

"I'm going to steal this one and name her Jolene!” The next day we began rehearsals. KC from KC and the sunshine band played with Dolly's band. We met Kelly Osborne who immediately loved Lala. Kelly grew up with Pomeranians her whole life and now has a Pomsky of her own. We met Jessica Simpson that day, too. She snuggled right up to her allowing Lala to kiss her face. She's kind and beautiful as well. And, Carson Kressley came up to us during the live taping of the show and said "I have to hold Lala during the finale, would that be okay with you?" I immediately handed her to him. "She's my favorite!" he said.

What was it like filming with so many pups? All the pups got along very well. Production also hired a pet welfare specialist. Stephanie Domini flew out from LA to make sure that all the dogs were taken care of while they were on set.

She is so lovely and it felt great knowing that someone was making sure our babies were being treated well.

What was your favorite part of this experience? Of course I was the most excited to meet Dolly Parton. Dolly is a legend! I had no idea we would get to be so close and personal with her. I also had no idea that Lala would be held by her. I could tell she really loved Lala. Dolly truly is an animal lover. This whole experience was a dream come true and we have Dawn Wolfe to thank for this incredible experience.

How did Lala get into the show business? Lala got into show business about 6 years ago when Lala auditioned for Anthony Rubio. After being selected as one of Rubio’s models, Lala appeared on 2 Chainz’ television show called “Most Expensivest” that featured Anthony Rubio, the pet couturier. You can catch Lala on Season 2, Episode 2 (Wild Kingdom). Anthony also invited Lala to walk in NY and LA fashion week. Lala has done the ma ority of her modeling work with Anthony. She has been on Access Hollywood and Telemundo TV with him, as well as numerous magazine features. We owe Lala's fashion career to Anthony who believed in Lala from day one. Lala’s sister, Darla is also an Anthony Rubio fashion model. We adopted her from the MSPCA who rescued her from a hoarding situation. For a sneak peek into Lala's and Darla's life, visit their instagram, @darlaandlalapom. Lala also does cameos, where all proceeds are donated to help various dog shelters.

The Queen of DOGUE Wonderland

From designer name to designer inspired room, bed and wardrobe, MaÏa Chanel's life is designer, no matter how you look at it. We discovered Maïa a while ago, and fell in love with her at DOGUE's Wonderland, last Christmas. She joined our virtual party and blew us away with her perfectly styled photos. The theme was designer Disney, where we combined classic Mickey Mouse with luxurious Gucci inspired looks, and let's just say that Maïa aced the assignment with one-of-kind looks and flawless poses. We knew right then and there, that Maïa is going to be the Cover Girl of our September issue! So, we connected with Maïa's momager, Mayra, to learn all about her Yorkie fashion model, and get a glimpse of her glamorous life in Puerto Rico. Is Maïa your first pup? Your first Yorkie? My first dog was a Cocker Spaniel. Her name was Lucky. After Lucky, I had my first Yorkie, called Rotzye Lu. She was with me for 14 years. Maïa came to my life to heal my heart after Rotzye Lu passed. I was devastated. Maïa filled that empty hole and brought color to my life. She completely changed my life and gave it new meaning. She is my whole world! Tell us the inspiration behind Maïa’s name, if there is one. Maïa's name was inspired by my own name, Mayra, and my favorite perfume, Chanel. In P.R it is very common to give the names of the parents to their children. And, since I didn't give my name to my daughter, I decided to give my name to my baby dog!

70

When did Maïa get on Instagram, and how did she get into fashion? When I made the decision to get Maïa, I knew she had to have her own IG account. She is a very sweet, loving, and fashionable baby. I believe that fashion is in her blood! She was born for this world! What attracted you to the Yorkie breed? I’ve always been in love with this incredible breed—their spectacular fur, excited eyes and raised ears. Yorkies are small in size but embody a big heart and huge personalities. I love everything about them. If I ever have a second dog, it will be a Yorkie. Maïa is the most sought after dog fashion model on Instagram, whose modeled for a dozen of brands, including Furbaby Couture , Momo Chic, Tubbie Tutus, Toy Doggie PR, 21Bays, Dressed Up, Doggone Dapper, Hidratta Pet, Maggie & CO, Fuzzy Bunny, GGCREW, Frenchconn Boutique, Mini Paws Designs, and DOGUE Swag, just to name a few. What is the most exciting thing that happened in Maïa's fashion career, so far? First, seeing Maïa's DOGUE covers displayed on the wall at Loyal Friends, a dog boutique in PR, was very inspirational! It was a great honor to participate in the promotion of their fashion event.

We also participated in Famous Paw Fashion Show, here in PR as well! Maïa loved walking the red carpet. We also visited local television channels as part of the promotion. Signing pawtographs and puppy paw-printing Maïa’s signature on dog fashion magazines was a thrill! But being the cover girl of DOGUE on the most important issue of the year, is the highest honor! I am elated, honored and blessed by this opportunity. Maïa is the perfect Cover Girl! Tell us about Maïa’s Cover Shoot, the location and the look. The location we chose was Jeanny’s Garden in the flower village, located in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. The Flower Clock is the second largest in the world. It is a huge tourist attraction on the island. Everyday at noon, the clock plays the national hymn of P.R and at 6:00 it chimes Ave Maria. We got a custom designed, Gucci themed gown from Mini Paws Designs. We paired it with a matching glam collar from French Conn Boutique, a custom glam cuff from GGCREW, glam sunnies from Furbabie Couture, and a beret from Loyal Friends PR. The photos were taken by the talented Jay McIntyre from JM photography. Maïa is known for her iconic styles and wardrobe! Tell us about Maïa's favorite pieces, or her favorite things to wear. Maïas wardrobe is very diverse. Among her favorite pieces are long-train dresses, shirts of various styles, pom pom tutus, lots of bows of various sizes, bags, glam collars, necklaces, glam cuffs, earrings, tags, hats, bandanas and other accessories. Her favorite pieces are definitely her jewelry. We love the jewelry for it instantly elevates any look! And now, to the most important question of all: What is the secret behind Maïa's perfect photos? It's all about the preparation and the details. We make sure that Maïa is well groomed. We make sure to have good lighting, and to take lots of photo options from different angles. It also helps that Maïa is a natural in front of the camera. Did Maïa have any training? Maïa is very smart. Since she was a young pup, she learned the basic commands very quickly including sit, stay, up, down. Maïa knows how to sit pretty, stand on two legs, spin, roll over, clap hands, and ring the bell, among other tricks. She is very treats motivated. She knows very well what she wants, and how to get it. What is Maïa's signature style? And what inspires you to play fashion with Maïa? Unless it's a collaboration with a specific theme requirements by the brand, I just put Maïa on the table and build the OOTD from scratch. I like to combine different looks and mix textures to achieve the look that I want, and the idea that I want to transmit. I love to create and invent. We're always captivated by Maïa's picture perfect posts. From her gorgeous outfits, to her flawless posing and great photography, Maïa's beauty is truely inspiring! To learn more, find Maïa on Instagram @maiachanelyorkiemodel.

Breed Highlight: Yorki 80

The Terrier Family Historically, Terriers were bred to dig and hunt for prey like foxes, moles, badgers, and rodents. Their name originates in the Latin word "terra" and means "earth" – although some people joke that the word terrier actually comes from the word "terror"! There are many different shapes and sizes in the Terrier family breed, but they all share a feisty, mischievous, and energetic nature. Terriers are also highly intelligent and trainable. There are at least 19 types of Terriers including: Cairn Terrier, Fox Terrier, Irish Terrier, Border Terrier, Boston Terrier, Bull Terrier, Airedale Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier, Miniature Fox Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Welsh Terrier, West Highland Terrier, Pitbull Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier, and Yorkshire Terrier. Yorkies are the smallest of the breed, named after its place of origin in Yorkshire, England. They’re toy-sized Terriers, averaging between 4 to 7 lbs in weight, and 8 to 9 inches in height. They're also known for their long, beautiful and silky, hypoallergenic coat.

BREED OVERVIEW GROUP: Toy HEIGHT: 8 to 9 inches WEIGHT: 4 to 7 pounds COAT: Silky, straight, floor-length COLOR: gold, tan, black, blue & parti LIFE EXPECTANCY: 13 to 16 years OTHER: Hypoallergenic

The History of the Famous Terriers

Credits to Courtesy of the AKC Library and Archives

Yorkies were initially bred in the Northern England counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire. Scottish textile mill workers brought many types of Scottish terriers with them, when they moved to England for work, according to the YTCA. They bred these little Scots with extinct English terriers to create what is now known as the Yorkshire Terrier. In the past, Yorkies were bred to be tough little rodent hunters. It was a far cry from the glamorous apartment lives they live now. For years, they were toiled away in textile mills and coal mines next to their blue-collar owners, according to the American Kennel Club. Yorkshire Terriers experienced a major life upgrade when Victorian women began adopting them as lap dogs. From the dusty floors of factory life, these little pups were transformed into fashionable fur babies and never looked back. Today, Yorkies are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Yorkies were first seen in America in the 1870s, and the AKC recorded its first Yorkie, a female named Belle, in 1885. The breed became officially recognized in 1886 in England.

Yorkies are also one of the most famous dog breeds. Historians have pointed out that drawings from the first edition of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz features Toto as a Yorkie, although, in the movie version, it was depicted by a Cairn Terrier. The Yorkshire Terrier also became a famous hero during the World War II, when an American soldier found Smoky, in a foxhole in Papua New Guinea. Smoky then went on to save lives, during the war, by helping transport a communications cable through a small drainage culvert. She also visited soldiers in hospitals and went on to be known as the very first therapy dog in history. Smoky's owner, William A. Wynne, even wrote a book chronicling her many adventures called Yorkie Doodle Dandy. There is also a memorial dedicated to Smoky's honor, in Cleveland. Famous Yorkie owners include President Nixon's family, Audrey Hepburn, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, and Simon Cowell, just to name a few.

TOY POODLE ISI A STAR IS BORN You may recognize Isidoro's adorable puppy face from Dolce & Gabbana's new Fefé commercial! But, who is this toy Poodle, and how did he rise to fame? That's what we wanted to know! So, we reached out to Isidoro's representatives and we spoke to his humans to bring you the exclusive on this Italian superstar who's making waves in the fashion world.

T

ell us about Isidoro. How did he come into your life?

Isidoro arrived at our home in April of 2021, being only two months old. He was extremely small but he immediately showed us that he had a temper! After a couple days, he climbed his kennel at night and showed up at our bedrooms’ door! Now he is 3 and a half years old, and he has grown up to be a very independent dog. He knows what he likes and what he doesn’t. He is a very picky eater, and, he cuddles only when he is in the mood. As for us, we really could not have imagined how much he’d change our lives. He is loving and joyful, but at the same time very protective of us. He is our first dog, and we are so happy we decided to have him!

How did Isidoro become a Dolce & Gabbana model and commercial actor? It was a total coincidence! Our groomer in Milan, Vanessa, heard that an agency was looking for a poodle that had certain features, and she immediately thought of Isi! After the agency contacted us, we rushed at the groomer’s to have the perfect cut, and the next day at 9am we were already on set! But that was not all! There was another poodle competing for this role! Isidoro got the part after the light test on set, where it became apparent to everyone that he had the right features and color.

What was it like filming with the D&G crew and other dog models? There were two crews, one for the shooting and another one for the video making. Everyone was really kind and made Isidoro feel really comfortable!

They were incredibly impressed by Isi’s ability to stay seated still on a very small stool for a long time! We also had some break to drink and play, and he got plenty of treats! Also, he kind of loved the attention, as everyone was saying “Bravo, Isidoro” or “Good boy”! The space was very well organized, there was a room where all dog actors could rest when not on set. There was a little bit of growling on set, but all the actors were mostly kept apart from one another. Raffaella, the trainer, explained to us that it is very important to keep a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, because the shooting experience itself can be already very tiring.

How does Isodoro like the new designer smell of D&G's Fefé? He had to get used to it very quickly, because he was sprayed a fair amount of it during the shoot, but, he wasn't bothered by the perfume. We noticed that it has a very delicate scent, suitable for dog’s sensitive sense of smell. It has been approved by vets and it’s alcohol-free, so it makes for a great cuddle and massage lotion and room freshener, too. In addition to that, the collar that comes with it is absolutely sleek! Does isidoro have any upcoming projects that we should know about? Or, anything else you'd like us to know about Isidoro? Isidoro’s main project is always to nap, get spoiled and eat treats! But he did shoot another commercial a couple months ago, that hasn’t been published yet! We would love to keep having this kind of experience from time to time, as we noticed that it really is a nice form of enrichment and it strengthens the bond between dog and human. Follow Isidoro's adventures @toypoodle_isidoro.
