Doggone Dapper's Commitment to Staying Green Unless you're brand new to Instagram's dog world, you have heard of, or seen, Doggone Dapper. Their Harley Davidson leather vests, King Bandanas, and Feathered Bows have taken over the dog fashion world, and have became a style staple for many dog models. For this issue, we sat down with Suzi Harris, the Owner and the Designer, behind the brand, to learn more about her passion project, and commitment to staying green. How did Doggone Dapper get started? "Doggone Dapper came about through my love of all things dog! I run a very successful Home Boarding and Daycare business which is heaven and I decided to make some fun bandanas for dogs using old Levis jeans found in Charity shops and from local friends and neighbours. And, that's how our first denim collection was born!" Doggone Dapper's Green Commitment "All of our collection is made from 100% upcycled fabrics and stitched using Gutermann rPET recycled polyester thread. Our bandanas are all fully lined, using preloved fabrics. No two bandanas are exactly the same for this very reason."

28

What makes Doggone Dapper different than other dog brands? "Each and every piece we make has been hand-made here in the UK. Our embroidered applique range are all hand stitched as is each flower on the special occasion pieces. We use no chemical adhesives at all." Doggone Dapper's Bigger Mission Every Doggone Dapper order helps a pup in need. With each order placed, Suzi donate £1 to the Dog Trouble Foundation. Suzi's Handmade Collection is designed with love, and created with respect for our planet. We are big fans of Suzi, and her brand, not just because of her unique styles, but because of the amazing human that she is. To learn more about Doggone Dapper, and to place custom orders with Suzi, check our her instagram page @doggone_dapper.

The Dapper Styles of Doggone Dapper

Lucky This Saint Patrick's day, we searched for gold, all over Instagram, and we found a Goldendoodle by the name of Teddy, in Tennessee. Teddy is considered a petite doodle weighing only 23 lbs. This month, we sat down with his mamager, Laurie, to discuss the golden life of her lucky charm. Why Goldendoodle? "Goldendoodles are so loveable—gentle, friendly and fun! They’re cute and cuddly. Hairy but they don’t shed! My son got a doodle with his girlfriend, and he would stay over, often, and I fell in love. I knew I wanted a doodle of my own someday, and then we ended up getting Teddy!" How did Teddy come into your life? "Teddy came into our lives almost two years ago. He was 12 weeks old, and only 7 lbs when we brought him home. We rescued him from a commercial enterprise. In other words, we bought him from a pet store, from a breeder in Illinois. Teddy is a very expensive mutt." This year, Teddy celebrated Saint Patrick's day wearing green, and posing for the cover of DOGUE, inside of his home bar, while his parents enjoyed green colored Vodka martinis. "Teddy isn't Irish, but he was kissing everyone!" explained Laurie.

30

Charm Laurie's kids convinced her to get Instagram for Teddy, and we are so glad she did because Teddy is a natural model. In fact, today, Teddy is someone we would consider a pawfessional dog model, who models for dozens of brands including Doggone Dapper, Dressed Up Pup, Lucy & Co, 21 Bays Pups, A Girl's Yorkie, Creating with Lizzy, Pineapple Paw Prints, and Archie's & Winston's Dog Goods, just to name a few. "He gets new clothes and jewelry every month. And he loves getting new toys—especially ones that squeak. He gets really excited when the mail comes because most of the packages are for him." We discovered Teddy last year during our World's Next Supaw Model competition. Teddy entered the Bikini Week wearing his one of a kind blue trunks, posing on a boat, and we simply couldn't resist his charms. "He loves boat rides! He likes to swim too, but prefers just relaxing on a noodle." his mamager added. So, it looks like this doodle loves his noodle! Teddy has been featured in Barker's Bazbark, Spawrts Illustrated, and the DOGUE magazine, on several occasions, and this is just the beginning for this Goldendoodle. Paws for Ukraine: Pups Help Us Stand Up for PEACE This year, paws got pawlitical. As the war raged in Ukraine, pups around the world joined us to stand up for PEACE. Some have organized their own fundraisers to help support their families and furriends. Others have donated to established human rights organizations, such as the IRC, to help support millions of Ukranians fleeing the country, in the biggest refugee movement since WWII. The IRC, or the International Rescue Committee, was founded by Albert Einstein in 1933, who was a refugee himself. In January 1933, Adolf Hitler, the head of the Nazi party, became a chancellor of Germany. Within two months, the Nazis had gained virtually total control of the country and had begun what would be a 12-year nightmare eventually engulfing the entire world. Although much of the world greeted the Nazi takeover with indifference or apathy, some people were alert to what was happening and the threat it represented. Einstein was among the first to call for action. In July of 1933, a committee of 51 prominent American intellectuals, artists, clergy, and political leaders formed a branch of the International Relief Association in New York, at the request of its chief, German-born physicist. Among them, were the philosopher John Dewey, the writer John Dos Passos, and the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. Other prominent citizens, and Eleanor Roosevelt, soon joined the effort. In October 1933, Albert Einstein fled the Nazi regime and found asylum in the United States.

52

Einstein has always been a huge supporter of human rights. He was outspoken against racism, nationalism, and nuclear proliferation. He said: "Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind. It is nothing more than an idealistic rationalization for militarism and aggression. He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned by contempt. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder." Einstein was a humanitarian visionary, who used his influence and money to secure visas for other refugees, and help found the IRC. Today, the organization continues to help refugees all over the world, including those from Ukraine. To learn more about the IRC, and to support their mission, visit www.rescue.org.

Breed Highlight: Goldendoodle 62

The Doodle Family While not officially a registered breed of its own, a Doodle is a mix between a Poodle and other dog breeds. Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are the most well known of the doodle dogs, but there are oodles of others, from Schnoodles and Whoodles, to Yorkiepoos, and Cockapoos. In fact, DogTipper.com identifies as many as 111 Doodle Breeds on their site! A Goldendoodle is a cross between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle. Goldendoodles are considered a "designer breed" because each of their parents is a purebred. In fact, both of the Goldendoodle’s parent breeds are among the AKC’s Top 10 Most Popular Breeds. The AKC considers the Goldendoodle a hybrid breed, because they’re produced by crossbreeding. However, they do allow them to compete in agility and obedience at AKC events. The Goldendoodle Association of North America is an excellent resource for Goldendoodle parents. Goldendoodles have become extremely popular because they are friendly, intelligent, and recommended for allergy sufferers. But, contrary to popular belief, Goldendoodles are not fully hypoallergenic. In fact, no dog is! But, they do shed a lot less than other dogs, which makes them a great choice for people will allergies. Goldendoodles come in three different sizes: Miniature (15-35 lbs), Medium (40-50 lbs) and Large (50-90 lbs).

BREED OVERVIEW HEIGHT: 17 to 24 inches WEIGHT: 15 to 90 pounds COAT: Flat, Straight, Wavy, or Curly COLOR: Cream, Red, Black, Gold, Apricot, Brown, White or Combination LIFE EXPECTANCY: 10 to 15 years

The History of Designer Mutts

The original Doodle was a Labradoodle, bred in the early 1980s by Wally Conron while working as a puppy-breeding manager for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia. His goal was to create an allergy-free guide dog for a vision-impaired woman, whose husband was allergic to dog hair. Two years and 33 trials later, Conron successfully crossed a Standard Poodle with a Labrador, and the Labradoodle was born. They made their first appearance in the United States in the early to mid-1990s. And, although they’re a newer hybrid, they quickly earned a following of devoted pet parents. Over time, the Labradoodle became a very popular breed, and with popularity came overbreeding. Some would even say that the designer dog craze got a little out of hand. Soon enough, any breed mixed with a Poodle was being advertised as “hypoallergenic.” This was very appealing to puppy mills. Suddenly, there were Doodles everywhere! These dogs also had a reputation for being low shedding, laid-back, good natured, smart, family dogs—the best of both breeds in the mix. FUN FACT: It’s claimed that Monica Dickens, the great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, bred the first cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle in 1969. This hybrid didn’t become popular then, but it sure took off in the 1990s!

The appearance, sizes and coat of Goldendoodles can vary considerably according what type of Poodle parents they have. In general, Goldendoodles have round skulls, broad muzzles, heavily feathered tail, drop ears, and oval-shaped eyes. Goldendoodles’ retriever parentage makes their body long and muscular, and likely to have deep chest and wide stance. Goldendoodle can be bred from any one of the Standard, Miniature or Toy-sized Poodles. The resultant offspring comes in several sizes: the Large, Medium and Miniature Goldendoodles. The Large Goldendoodle typically stands 20 to 24 inches tall, the Medium Goldendoodle typically stands 17 to 20 inches tall, and the Miniature Goldendoodle typically stands up to 20 inches. Primarily bred as companion dogs, Goldendoodles have been successfully trained as therapy dogs, guide dogs, nut-detection dogs (detecting nuts in food for people with nut allergies), and other forms of assistance dogs. In some regions of the United States, it has become one of the most popular dog breeds. In Australia, it was named one of the Top Twenty Most Popular Dog Breeds in 2020, where, due to the increased demand for pets during the COVID-19 pandemic, prices for a puppy have risen from around $3,500 AUD (pre-pandemic) to as much as $15,000 AUD by September 2020. In a 2012 charity auction, American musician Usher paid $12,000 USD for a Goldendoodle puppy.

Our organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We are a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and are proud to boast more than 2 million supporters across the country. The ASPCA’s mission is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”

"Helping vulnerable animals and keeping pets in safe and loving homes requires a commitment from all of us— advocates, pet owners, shelters, leaders, and entire communities.
