s we prepare this issue - right now, the weather is really heating up and spring seems to quickly be turning into summer, fingers crossed. So with that in mind, we bring you a plethora of what’s coming into season with our specially extended fashion pages to help warm up for the season. Read about some of the creative talent which we have unearthed in the Northwest as we continue to bring you, as we do in each issue, examples of women from the region who inspire us in a multitude of ways. Furthermore, with the arts being so close to my heart, and so well represented in the Northwest, we are inviting all budding photographers and the more seasoned ones too, to photograph Ireland’s Inland Waterways as part of our Capturing Ireland’s Waterways competition. It’s HEATING UP in the northwest Local ladies are encouraged to take part in the Northwest heats of this year’s Open + Direct Miss Northern Ireland competition where judges will select finalists to compete at the final event in The Europa Hotel on 14th May. If you’re aged between 17 and 24 and think you’ve got what it takes to take over from current Miss Northern Ireland, Finola Guinnane, the tour will stop off at Sense in Cookstown on 7th April, Sally’s in Omagh on 15th April and McAleers in Dungannon on 20th April. For those of you who tune into Ryan Tubridy’s Greet on the Street tour for RTE 2FM, you’ll know that Ryan and his crew recently visited Co. Monaghan. On their travels, the team visited the charming Castle Leslie Estate where Ryan was treated to a carriage ride around the estate and enjoyed afternoon tea in the luxurious surroundings of the Castle with its panoramic views of Glaslough Lake. Impressed by the sheer beauty and warmth of the estate, Sir Jack and Sammy Leslie were invited onto the show being broadcast from the Westenra Arms Hotel where Ryan wanted to know how Sir Jack, at aged 95, keeps young. Yes CHEF! Many congratulations to Sligo-based chef, Alan Fitzmaurice who will captain the Irish team competing at the Culinary Olympics in Germany this October. As head-chef at Source Sligo whose ethos is all about local produce, this will also be applied to the National Culinary Team who collectively hope to showcase Irish food as being world class. He’s got THE VOICE VOTE for episode 2 The Begrudgers is back and needs your votes. The Cavan-produced series written by Philip Doherty about two miserable barflies is currently competing in RTÉ Storyland 4, an RTÉ web based competition which allows the winner to produce a series of four episodes. If like us and you were one of the 9.86 million viewers who tuned into the first episode of BBC’s newest reality show, The Voice, then you will have no doubt seen Derry singer, Ben Kelly wow the coaches. Singing Rocket Man by Elton John, the 21-year-old who has had over a million hits on his YouTube videos prior to his audition, gained the backing of all the coaches before picking to team with Jessie J. When we speak of cut, this refers to the facets and the proportions of the diamond as opposed to its shape such as Round Brilliant, Marquise, Pear and Princess. Every diamond regardless of its shape gets it brilliancy and scintillation by cutting and polishing the diamond facets to allow the maximum amount of light that enters through its top to be reflected and dispersed back. This is most effective in correctly cut stones as practiced by Mercers. Be aware that the most frequent mistakes in cut is an incorrect number of facets or when a stone is cut too shallow or too deep meaning the light that enters through the top is allowed to escape through the diamond’s bottom and therefore never not realising the diamond’s true beauty. Clarity Many people are fascinated by a diamond’s physical properties. Mercers measure these by examining the amount and location of flaws or blemishes under magnification. By doing so, an idea of clarity can be rated according to a Flawless to Imperfect 3 chart - however, almost all diamonds have natural inclusions that can affect the diamond’s fire, but they also make your diamond unique and shouldn’t always be seen as a fault.

A stone is said to be flawless if, under magnification, it has no clouds, pinpoints or internal crystals, no scratches, burns or abrasions while the most obvious flaws include clouding (dull stone), substantial crystallisation (veins, waves or cracks), nodes (diamond crystal within the diamond itself) and naturals (where the original surface of the crystal is visible in its rough state). Colour
Most diamonds feature tiny amounts of nitrogen which creates colour, therefore it only natural that they come in every colour of the rainbow. This shades are measured and rated according to a scale running from ‘D’ (colourless) to ‘Z’ (saturated/light yellow). ‘D’ is the highest and therefore the most rare of colour grades. Its colour diamonds have no tint of colour, they are fundamentally colourless meaning they can reflect all of the spectral colours most accurately. Due to their rarity, D colour diamonds are both distinct and exquisite and are highly prized. The differences from one grade to the other are very subtle and it takes a trained eye and years of experience to color grade a diamond. Carat
The weight, and thus the size of a diamond is measured in carats. A carat is equivalent to 0.2gm, or 200mgm and as the carat weight of a diamond increases, so does its rarity and therefore its price. A carat is divided into 100 smaller units called points. For example, three-quarters of a carat is 75 points. The carat-weight of a diamond is the easiest measurement to determine, however, two diamonds can be of equal carat-weight, but their value can differ greatly due to their cut, color, and clarity.

he return of the peplum may have sparked Saved By The Bell flashbacks in all their ‘80s neon glory, but before you write the trend off, give the new interpretations a chance. Designers have taken what is basically an extra piece of fabric attached around the waist and worked it into something fresh, modern and very flattering. We saw it appear at Givenchy, worked in flirty white lace on the perfect summer dress at Lela Rose and captured as chic and simple at Yves Saint Laurent. If there’s one thing this trend is, it’s versatile. And with such dominance on the spring and autumn 2012 catwalks, it is clear that this look is here to stay. Though it may seem a bit counter-intuitive to add extra fabric around your waist, the peplum can actually draw attention to your nipped-in waist while skimming over your hips to the pencil skirt underneath giving you an hourglass shape. The thing to watch out for is the length and amount of flare from the waist. If you are nervous about this trend then begin with something like Emilio de la Morena’s tops. With just the slightest flare they were the most streamlined version on the catwalk, though you do lose out on much of the illusion of a tiny waist when you opt for a less full peplum. This look is great if you’re thinking of updating your work wardrobe. Yes, peplums can be office appropriate too! Red carpet favourite Zac Posen showed green blazers with tiny structured hips, which would work with a slim-fit skirt or straight-leg trousers alike. For a softer look, pick up a Gilesinspired camel jacket. A classic addition to your wardrobe, this is a great way to ease yourself into the look. The slightly cropped sleeves and no collar give it a modern feel. To go all out for eveningwear, there is only one line you need to see, Givenchy. There is nothing dainty about these peplums that are worked in black lace and feathers for masses of glamour. If you are feeling very brave, opt for a peplum jacket completely covered in silver sequins just like Riccardo Tisci’s woman. This one is not for wallflowers! Is all this a bit too tough for you? If you’re of the belief that summer is not summer without some pretty pastels and floral prints then worry not, there is a peplum for you too. The true romantics should take inspiration from Alexander McQueen

Keep the pencil skirt to just below the knee for the most flattering effect on those of us who are not built like supermodels. aving loved photography from a young age and studied art at school, a creative career seems like it was always on the cards for Erica. Following her studies of Visual Communication in Belfast, the Trillick native gained a wealth of experience having spent a summer in Canada and at a top commercial studio in Belfast who later employed her after graduation. It was here where the 30-year-old learnt the ropes of photography – skills she later developed on the side, which inevitably led to setting up her own business and to become one of Northern Ireland’s leading photographers. Delving into her craft, Erica’s work is simply beautiful. Everything from the subject to the intricacy is exceptionally captured. While she specialises in weddings, portraits and fashion, it is the subject of women she most enjoys snapping; “I just really love making them look their best and feel completely at ease,” she says. A self-confessed people pleaser, Erica takes great joy in making her clients laugh (or sometimes cry) with joy and tells us about her favourite kind of photos. “Almost every shoot I do I choose a new favourite! If an image has good light, a couple has good chemistry or a baby image makes me smile or laugh when I am editing - then it is my new favourite.” Having won two awards for her wedding photography, Erica is in hot demand and is fully booked this year and next. espite not having heard of graphic design at first, Fiona Stewart has embarked on a successful career doing just that. With creative flair in abundance, it was suggested to the Coleraine native in high school that it would be this field where she would best utilize her skills – advice which thereby led Fiona to study Visual Communication and Graphic Design at the University of Ulster. Following graduation, the 37-year-old gained employment with Partridge Peartree Promotion in Maydown before moving to London to work for London Pre-Press on three publications. “I was the only female on a male dominated floor”, she recalls. “It was a real baptism by fire experience.” Four years later, Fiona returned to Northern Ireland and by the following year, set up her own company, Bohemiantree Design. Since becoming self-employed, Fiona has worked on numerous great projects with particular highlights including her work with Ciaran Gribbin (in wake of his announcement as the new lead singer of INXS), working alongside Jacqueline McGonigle from Whatsonni.com to design Dr Whatson as well as producing work for a Los Angeles internet forum that was organizing a tribute for Michael Jackson which was presented to him in 2005. As someone who thoroughly enjoys her work, Fiona thrives on the interaction with clients. “It’s very rewarding to produce a design which exceeds a client’s expectations,” she says. So what’s next for Fiona? “I’ve been very fortunate to meet and work with local businesses who have opened many doors for me. I want to continue to build on that and produce work locally and abroad.”

s a child working from a pretend café in her parents’ house where she took orders and made wonderful creations from washing powder and water, to setting up to her own homemade baking business – Jill Condell is seeing her dream to bake for a living come to fruition. Growing up, she learned the craft of making cakes and buns from her family and having spent time at Ella’s Barn in Caledon, Co. Tyrone, it was here where she established her flair for cake decoration – a skill she is fast becoming reknowned for. Catering to each client’s individual taste, Jill’s most popular orders include cupcakes, cake pops, traybakes, desserts and celebration cakes. And while she loves all aspects of the job, it is particularly wedding cakes she has a penchant for – even if we are likely to hear her announce a third of the way through that she will never take on another wedding cake again! In spite of her business still in its first year of opening, the 28-year-old notes her ability to combine her talent with her faith as one of her greatest highlights. In terms of a favourite creation, the mum-of-two describes a cake she made for a recent wedding whose theme was ‘The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ as a design “full of firsts” and a real challenge, but an exciting one nonetheless. As her business continues to grow, Jill thrives on the variety of the job, as no two days are the same. “It’s a chance to unleash my creative streak alongside my love for baking,” she says. “Also, it is very rewarding when you are able to produce something that not only looks pleasing to the eye but tastes good too!” Jill’s creations are currently stocked in Pinky and Perky and Savoir Faire in Co. D
ancer and teacher Victoria Walker’s story is one of great accomplishment. Having told her mum at 4-years-old she wanted to dance around the world and then at aged 11 telling the Hull Daily Mail newspaper how she wanted to dance around the world and then come back home to open her own dance school – well, many years later, she’s done exactly that. The 29-year-old began dancing at the age of 2 and a half and enjoyed taking ballet, tap, modern, jazz and disco. At age 11, Victoria gained a place at Elmhurst Ballet School and at 18 she furthered her training at Laine Theatre Arts Musical Theatre College where she gained her qualifications in professional dance as well as teaching. The following year, Victoria embarked on her journey travelling the world with her craft performing in many Broadway shows and more recently for Le Lido, Paris before – as she once prophesized as a child – returning home in 2010 to set up her own dance and choreography school. As someone who enjoys the creativity dance acquires, Victoria notes the variety of what a week at her dance school

can entail as one of the things she enjoys most about her job. “Also, I love people and the amount of people I get to meet in my profession,” she says. Reflecting on her successful career thus far, the East Yorkshire native whose family moved to Leitrim almost 15 years ago, expresses her gratitude for all the opportunities including teaching and choreographing jazz for the Irish Youth Dancers who came first in the Irish National Dance Awards in 2008, completing a degree in Dance and Performance in 2009 whilst performing throughout the 3 years as well being invited to dance in The Nutcracker ballet in Japan at aged 15. In addition to such success, Victoria states the opening of her school as the biggest highlight. “I would love to one day have a state of the art dance and performing arts venue in the Northwest but one step at a time,” she says. rom a young age, Yvonne McKenna recalls her passion for making and creating things; “From drawing and painting to customising clothes and accessories, I’ve always had a love for adding a personal touch to something new,” she says. Following a degree in Technology and Design at the University of Ulster, the Fermanagh native decided to combine her creativity with her knowledge of entrepreneurial skills acquired through her studies to set up her own bespoke jewellery business, Evo Jewellery. What started out as a small business servicing family and friends has developed steadily over the last few years and as a result has expanded to create a wide range of products from costume to bridal jewellery and accessories, to millinery and embellishments. With every creative job, ideas and inspiration is vital. For her Evo Jewellery designs, Yvonne’s ideas can come from vintage designs and one-off pieces to current fashion and celebrity style. “Also, inspiration often comes directly from my clients, because I work so closely with them we usually spend the first consultation bouncing ideas of each other,” she says. “This not only gives me an idea of what they are looking for but also a sense of their personality and style, aspects of which I can focus on throughout the design process.” As a business owner, times can often be stressful but Yvonne considers her job very enjoyable nonetheless. “The most enjoyable part of running Evo Jewellery is the interaction I have with both new and existing clients; their outfits, their ideas and their reactions to my creations are what inspire me to continue creating and building the Evo Jewellery brand.” Also helping Yvonne to build her brand is the recent achievement of having some examples of her work featured on a popular Irish designer’s accessory website. hat started out as a quest to learn some crafts comes the story of Gayle Hegarty taking matters into her

own hands. Powerless to locate one-day courses and unable to find the time for a course that took six weeks, the 39-year-old decided to set up her own courses from her home in Omagh. With the help of trainers, Homecraft Revival teaches everything from knitting, patchwork to cupcake decoration and enables people to learn on a beginner basis. While many people would be dubious about having people in their home, Gayle enjoys this aspect very much. “Everyone is so lovely and they are there as a treat, they want to enjoy their day out and acquire a new skill,” she says. “I enjoy hosting and socialising.” On reflection of what she’s accomplished, Gayle regards her greatest achievements thus far as learning how to crochet, ice cupcakes, sewing her first patchwork blanket by hand as well as having a particular fondness for the website. “People love it. There is a vintage homespun vibe to it and I hope it helps to shed the fuddy-duddy image that crafting sometimes has.” In addition, she also notes the gift-making classes as a high due to being unsure about her ability. “Those days are exhausting but really rewarding. Participants go home with at least three lovely gifts they made themselves.” With her service going from strength to strength, it is no surprise Homecraft Revival’s spring classes are filling up. As a result, Gayle hopes to branch into new courses ready for the autumn schedule. “I really feel that being creative helps us in some way, whatever it is, that’s why I dip in and out of so many of them, my needs and creative energy changes and Homecraft Revival really helps people tap into where their crafting strengths lie.” www.homecraftrevival.com

riting has been a way of life for Leona O’Neill for over 16 years. Following her studies in Belfast, the Derry journalist got her first job in Newry as a reporter before moving to a Belfast newsroom and then spending 8 years with The Irish News – for whom she still writes a column for. After years working in newspapers, the 36-year-old along with her photographer husband decided to embrace the digital age and together set up Newswire.com last October, which attracts 30,000 readers a week. And if that wasn’t enough hard work, Leona has also been writing books for almost two decades, with her new book, Emerald Witch the latest release to hit shops. Centered on a Donegal teenager, Emerald Witch fuses teenage woes with supernatural myths and legends to create a majestic fairytale set against well-known Irish landmarks. Having taken two years to write, Leona lets us in on her process. “I like to plan things in my head before I write. I could be walking around the aisles of a supermarket and plotting a chapter. I am a compulsive people watcher,” she says. “I love watching how we interact with each other and I often borrow people’s quirks and lend them to my characters. One of the main characters in my book has a few of my mother’s finest features and my husband has unwittingly lent a few of his mannerisms to another character. So I do use experience, the people I know and imagination to build my stories.” While there have been many highlights in Leona’s career, the busy mum-of-four tells us how seeing her book for the first time, and to hold it in her hands was her proudest moment. “I love seeing the book on a shelf. There is no greater pride for a writer,” she says. Despite her new book having only just come out, Leona is already hard at work writing the second book in the Emerald Witch series. “It’s going to be a hard job making it bigger and better than the first one but I’ll give it my very best shot.”

ith her mother working as an interior designer, Jennifer Wrynne is proof the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. At 22-years-old, millinery only very recently struck a cord with the Leitrim beauty after attending the Irish racing festivals. Captivated by the synonymous headpieces on show, Jennifer became passionate about the craft and since February of last year began taking intensive one-to-one millinery courses. In such a short space of time, Jennifer’s creations have received great acclaim with one of her designs donning a finalist for Best Dressed Lady at the Killybeggan Races. In addition to this, she also made the final of the Best Hat Competition on Ladies Day in Galway. Listing her favourite materials to use as silk, velvet, ornate flowers and pearls, Jennifer adores everything about the creation process. “I love everything about hat making, not just the designing,” she says. “Even sewing on millions of pearls can be quite therapeutic. Every hat is a new design and something exciting so I never get bored.” While she may only be starting out in the industry, Jennifer certainly isn’t afraid to dream big naming Kate Middleton and Lady GaGa as her dream customers. magine a world filled with truths, where every single honest thought became as routine to us as biting our tongue. A world where we can respectively admit how we “just can’t be bothered” attending that event or how that dress does indeed do absolutely nothing for your figure, and that it’s actually horrible. So horrible in fact that you make no attempt to disguise it. After all, “we’re just being honest, right?” Just how realistic would it be? Would it be liberating or would it merely act as the catalyst to our downfall? Probably the latter, for while you may momentarily feel invigorated, Truth Territory is very likely to be riddled with repercussions destined to compromise your career and relationships. Though we generally try to live a morally correct and wholesome life, there’s no denying that the key to our social

survival somewhat depends on lies. Hell, we’d soon be clearing out our desk and chilling with our only friend, Jack Daniels otherwise. Whether we like it or not, lies are merely mandatory and a natural part of every day human interaction. You know it, we know, even Sheila across the way knows you didn’t really have a prior engagement that time; it’s just a way of life. According to a survey, the average person tells four lies every day, with women clocking up 3 and men almost doubling their deceit with 5 or 6. It is thought we choose to pepper the truth for many reasons including not wanting to hurt feelings and compromise situations. While little Jimmy is clearly rubbish on the drums and secretly makes you want to rip your own ears off, you simply tell him he’s great. Cruel? Maybe. But easier? Without a doubt. So, what kind of lies are our favourites? And what do we really mean?

onforming to such a life, it is only inevitable that we conjure up endless peeves and annoyances inflicted by others. Many of which make up the unwritten rules of society we’re so consciously, or unconsciously aware of and try to adhere to. Heck, there’s got to be some form of etiquette to help us harness our honesty and eliminate all possibility of going crazy. To best describe these floating laws, just think of queuing. There’s a whole system to it. Same with parking, counting and a personal favourite, story-telling and how they tend to spiral into a whirlpool of lies in order to retain attention and interest. (We’re all guilty of that one, I don’t care what you say!) But while we mere mortals might generally overlook such regulations, we must learn from the master, Larry David, who so divulges such societal rules in the hit HBO series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Should you be unfamiliar with the show’s genius, let us put it simply. Larry David is everything we liars wish we could be. He shamelessly speaks his mind, regardless of the consequences that invariably land him in hot water. Dubbed the ‘Social Assassin’, Larry tackles people’s wrongdoings in social conventions, and as a result, expresses his expectations of them even in the minutiae of daily life. Condescending? Perhaps, but necessary in the quest of a perfect world. See for yourself. Find a few presented to you in the hopes that not only will you agree, but that you also present them to others. That way, we may eventually achieve perfect harmony where ‘Sweet Little Lies’ is just a Fleetwood Mac song.

Feel energised, be EMPOWERED Empowerment can exist at many levels – personal, social and political. But what is it exactly? Fiona Hoban explains...
A
simple definition is that empowerment is a process by which individuals and/or groups gains power over their own lives or situations to enable them to reach their personal and/or collective goals. Some would argue that empowerment on the personal level is the most important one since it’s the foundation of all others. Much has been written about what constitutes personal empowerment and psychologists have researched this under various headings ranging from academic success to self advocacy, the promotion of competence, self-confidence and awareness building. However it seems that the single and most critical component of empowerment quoted in the literature is self-determination, often defined as the ability to chart one’s own course in life. It is also associated with the ability to maintain a firm stand and give expression to one’s inner voice to achieve personal rights.

One might say as a society we have been disempowered with the recent loss of our collective ability to chart our own economic course. It’s hard to chart your own course when you’ve been removed from the helm! When we feel disempowered we often feel that life has no meaning. If we cannot find meaning, we suffer from ‘give-up-itis’. Many people are expressing this sense of powerlessness and alienation as a knock-on effect of the current economic collapse. And yet, this is where personal empowerment can really come into play. Existential philosophy and psychology push the notion that whilst we may not be free from external conditions we are free to choose our attitude towards such conditions. We do not have to remain passive victims of our circumstances. To realise this is in itself empowering. Viktor Frankl the psychiatrist who survived the concentration camps says in his book Mans Search For Meaning: “We watched
now, in order to give my life a real sense of meaning?” What he’s getting at is that life is potentially meaningful under any conditions even those which are most miserable. He quotes Nietzsche: “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” And it’s up to each of us to find the why. Such meaning is unique and specific in that it must and can be fulfilled by us and us alone. Once we have discovered our own unique meaning, we are then empowered to chart our own course through life, regardless of external conditions.

some of our comrades behave like swine while others behaved like saints. Man has both potentialities within himself; which one is actualized depends on decisions, not on conditions.” In that sense we are not entirely at the mercy of the conditions we find ourselves in. How we choose to respond ultimately makes us responsible for our lives, for our actions and for our failures to take action. If we persistently blame external conditions for our problems we are likely to remain disempowered. Psychologist Stephen Diamond reiterates this notion of personal freedom and responsibility when he says: “Therefore, we are each morally required to accept rather than project that ponderous responsibility - lest we prefer instead to wallow in a perennial state of powerless, frustrated, furious, victimhood. For what one possesses the power to bring about, one has also the power to limit, mitigate, counteract, or transmute.” Many inmates in the concentration camps asked the question; “Will we survive the camp, for if not, all this suffering has no meaning”. This is a common way of coping with hardship if you think about it. We typically say: I can put up with the hardship if I get something at the end of it – even if it’s simply an end to the hardship. If I don’t get anything at the end of it, then there’s no point. Remarkably Frankl turns this on its head. He did not ask: “Will I survive the camp?” He asked, “Has all this suffering meaning?” For if not, then ultimately there is no meaning to survival. For a life whose meaning depends upon whether one escapes the camps or not, ultimately would not be worth living at all. Makes you think doesn’t it! If I were to apply his philosophy to the hardship of this economic recession, for example, it would follow thus: if the meaning of my life depends solely on whether or not I manage to survive the economic recession, then ultimately my life is not worth living at all. Yikes! So rather than asking, “How much longer do I have to endure this?” or “What are the chances that this will pay off in the end?” - He challenges us to answer this question: “What meaning can I derive from this particular situation

METROSEXUAL MAN Since when did men take such good care of themselves? And, do we even like it? Gemma McCallen investigates...
I
remember a few years ago being in a beauty salon, waiting to be taken when one of the most macho blokes I know emerged from the sunbeds with that ‘lovely’ red glow you get when coming off them. I nearly fell off my chair. I did think to myself maybe he was on the sun bed for some sort of skin condition but when he approached me on a night out a

few days later and asked me not to mention it to anyone as he was “just really pale”, my suspicions were confirmed – he was there simply to get a tan. He would have been better off saying nothing to me! This was when I first started to notice the rise of the amount of men who primped and preened themselves compared to years ago.
A new look for the male species has been creeping up within the past few years and has been coined ‘metrosexual’. Described as a man who has a high disposable income and spends a lot of time and his hard earned cash on his appearance, this can include buying clothes, cosmetics and getting beauty treatments. Go into any beauty salon now or look at a price list, nine times out of ten there is a section specifically for men. And I’m not just talking about sunbeds. They can get manicures, pedicures, waxing, spray tans and facials to name but a few. I have to add that after looking at a few pricelists to research this, I had a laugh out loud moment at the name of some of the waxing treatments for the more ‘intimate’ areas – Galaxy, Mars, Saturn and Universe. Don’t ask me the connection because I don’t (and would rather not) know to be honest. Speaking to a few guys on a night out (any excuse) I asked them what their beauty routine was (if they had one) and I was shocked with the reply. “Yeah I get beauty treatments done, I get a spray tan once a month, facials and my bikini line waxed. You feel better when you look good,” one guy said. The other was less adventurous by telling me that he just buys one outfit a week, including a new pair of trousers and a top. He also told me that if he started to lose his hair he would follow Wayne Rooney’s footsteps and get a hair transplant. “I wouldn’t think twice about it. I would even dye my hair if it started to go grey.” It’s not often you hear men admit things likes this which is why I think it is so alien to us. When it comes to what cosmetics are out there for men, you don’t realise how many there are until you look. At Christmas I went to buy some male grooming products as a present (the absolute minimal products I am haste to add) and I couldn’t believe it when I seen moisturiser ‘with a hint of tan’ in it. Just like the Johnson’s Holiday Skin we ladies swear by. I must have been living under a rock for all these years! There are probably nearly as many types of moisturiser for men out there as there are for us ladies. And for the more adventurous guys out there, let’s not forget the ‘guy-liner’… but I’ll let everyone form their
own opinions on that. Then there’s the fashion. You notice a difference everywhere. There are more and more men wearing cardigans and jumpers, and pairing them with trousers instead of jeans on nights out – and maybe even coloured trousers if they’re feeling adventurous enough to roll with the current trend. (Well, it does make a nice change from checked shirts and jeans to be honest.) Gone too are sandy boots (thank the Lord) which have been replaced by espadrilles, brogues and converse. All of these changes have probably filtered down from city living and the country men are quickly catching up. A lot of it too is probably influenced by the celebrity world - as is most things regarding image. Remember when celebrities such as Liam Gallagher, Colin Farrell or Russell Crowe wooed us all with their rough and ready look? Now it’s all about the clean shaven and well presented look that the likes of David Beckham, George Clooney or Ryan Reynolds possess. There is probably a perception attached to these metrosexual males that they are more sensitive and caring. Hmm, I’m not so sure. I reckon some of them (definitely not all) are just as tough on the inside, but softer around the edges. Let’s go with that thought anyway and not shatter our illusions. So up until now, it might appear that I dislike the grooming scene. But actually I do; to a certain extent that is! I think a man taking care of himself is actually quite nice and should be more accepted in today’s society. I do however (and this is an entirely personal opinion) draw the line at spray tans. If there’s one thing that makes us ladies feel good about ourselves, it is having a good tan and we don’t want men taking that away from us. God, imagine how would you feel if you were having one of your pasty white days (we all have them) and your other half draped a lovely sun kissed arm around you on the sofa. Not something I’m keen to experience. Personally I think a guy taking pride in his appearance is great – just as long as he doesn’t take it too far and take longer than me to get ready for a night out. One prima donna in front of the mirror is enough thank you very much!

t may be fair to say that trademarks of today’s society can be defined in many ways. Aside from the constantly bleak reminder of our imploding economy (enough, already), there is way more to celebrate; including our ever-advancing technology (electric cars, what?), continued success of home-grown talent (back-to-back Major winners) and of course, the monumental pop-reunion of Steps. (C’mon, who doesn’t love a bit of Deeper Shade of Blue?) However, as championed as all that might be, there is one advancement of recent times which men – and women, by result - have been particularly keen to embrace; the rise of the silver fox. Think George Clooney, Richard Gere, Sean Connery - yes, that’s right ladies – those wearing salt and peppery mops, snowcapped barnets, silver temples… and we find it irresistible! According to a recent survey, never has it been hotter to be a silver fox. While men used to douse their mousey markings with Just For Men, or L’Oréal in David Ginola’s case, now an increased number of them proudly let their silver shimmer shine - to much appreciation from two thirds of the 1,000 singles questioned! Instead of being written off as “old”, such silver foxes are now defiantly rewriting the stereotypical rules that aging and grey hair obtain. Less about wrinkles and, dare I say it, death – grey hair has largely become about the feeling of establishment and embodying a sense of fulfilment. Sophisticated and experienced, a kind who are found sitting in an antique armchair, legs crossed, reading Chaucer or something equally important, all the while spurting intelligent sentences and perplexed expressions. They are articulate, cultured, well-travelled… or if not, simply wish to appear to be. And why not? It’s official, grey hair is cool. So much so that even younger
men in their 30s, even 20s happily loom in the phenomenon too. While older foxes might be hailed for their worldy and authoritative outlook, younger foxes however offer a unique involvement on the trend in that they paradoxically look youthful yet seasoned meaning a whole lot of sexy – take TV personality George Lamb as a prime example. (I fully imagine there are few who would overlook his foxy flashes!) But where has such silver acceptance sprouted from and why are women particularly attracted by it? Ostensibly there are a number of factors involved. Beginning with inspiration sparking from film and TV stars such as Clooney, Matt Le Blanc and John Slattery who we have all watched over the years grow into their grey hairs of wisdom and subsequent sex appeal. As for the attraction, it seems we encompass inbuilt evolutionary mechanisms that lead us to make judgements of attractiveness on a non-conscious level. Women of child-bearing age are apparently attracted to men eight to ten years older than themselves as they believe older men will be better providers for a family. And so with grey hair acting as an indicator for older men, it seems everyone’s jumping aboard the aging bandwagon. Clearly grey is fast becoming ‘just another hair colour’ – with dye now available to even achieve the look yourself. And rightfully so, for why it was ever considered toxic is a riddle in itself when we’re surrounded by such fine examples. The truth is, men come into their own when they sprout silver shimmers, they become a fantastical projection for both men and women alike and this needs to be accepted, embraced and celebrated. Just like how Philip Schofield once did - and we all remember how we viewed him after that! To reiterate… men, put down the dye and that God awful spray on tint, and trust us when we say, let your luscious locks lighten.

“Chargrilled peppers have the most wonderful, smoky sweetness, which I just adore. Collect as much of the juice as possible as you peel them, as it really has a great flavour. In the restaurant I don’t use any flour in my soups these days. I was always conscious of our diners who were coeliac, and have now come to prefer soups without flour and it helps keep them so much lighter too.”
Serves: 4-6
ROASTED RED PEPPER AND TOMATO SOUP Ingredients:
4 red peppers, halved, cored and seeded 2 tomatoes, quartered 5 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar ½ tsp chopped fresh thyme 2 onions, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp tomato purée 1.2 litres (2 pints) vegetable or chicken stock 2 tbsp torn fresh basil Maldon sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Basil pesto, to garnish Freshly baked ciabatta, to serve (optional)
Method:
- Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F), gas mark 5. - Arrange the pepper halves and tomatoes in a baking tin, cut side up. - Drizzle over four tablespoons of the oil and then sprinkle the vinegar, thyme and a teaspoon of the salt on top. - Place in the oven and roast for 30-40 minutes or until softened and lightly golden. - When the peppers are cold enough to handle, slip the skins off the peppers and discard, then chop roughly the flesh, reserving as much of the juice as possible. Set aside with tomatoes until needed. - Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a pan, add the onions and garlic and sweat for 2-3 minutes until lightly golden, stirring occasionally. - Add the reserved pepper flesh, tomatoes with the tomato purée and stock and bring to the boil. - Reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until slightly reduced. - Add the basil or pesto and then blitz with a hand blender until smooth or use a food processor. - Season to taste.

Ladle the soup into warmed serving bowls and drizzle with a little basil pesto, then serve with some ciabatta bread on the side if liked.
COVERfood SHEPHERD’S PIE “This Shepherd’s Pie must be the ultimate comfort food. It is full of goodness and can happily be made the day before. Simply cover with cling film and pop in the fridge until needed. It is traditionally made with minced lamb but of course you could use beef and then call it a cottage pie.” Ingredients:
2 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 smoked bacon rashers, rinds removed and diced 450g (1lb) lean minced lamb 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 4 carrots, finely diced 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 300ml (½ pint) beef stock (see Essentials page 214) 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme 1 tbsp chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 100g (4oz) frozen peas For the Cheesy Mash: 900g (2lb) floury potatoes, cut into even-sized pieces (such as roosters) 100ml (3½fl oz) milk 25g (1oz) butter 50g (2oz) Cheddar cheese, grated Maldon sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method:
- To prepare the cheesy mash, steam the potatoes for 20-25 minutes until cooked through and tender. - Drain and return to the pan, then put on the heat for a few minutes to dry out. - Remove from the heat and mash well, making sure there are no lumps. - Meanwhile, heat the milk in a small pan and then beat into mashed potatoes with the butter and cheese until you have achieved a smooth mash. Season to taste and set aside until needed. - Meanwhile, heat half the oil in a heavy-based pan with a lid. - Add the bacon and minced lamb and sauté until lightly browned and break-up any lumps with the back of a wooden spoon. - Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. - Add the rest of the oil to the heated pan and then tip in the onion and cook for a couple of minutes until softened but not coloured.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute or so, then tip in the carrots and sauté for another 5 minutes until tender. - Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, then add the stock, tomato purée and thyme with the cooked mince and bacon mixture. Give everything a good stir and bring to the boil. - Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for about 30 minutes until the minced lamb is cooked through and tender. - Finally stir in the parsley and peas and season to taste. - Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F), Gas mark 4. - Transfer the cooked minced lamb mixture into an ovenproof dish and leave to cool slightly for 20 minutes to allow a slight skin to form. - Gently spoon the cheesy mash on top, spreading it with a fork to ensure it’s even. - Cook for 25-30 minutes or until the cheesy mash is bubbling and golden brown. - Serve straight to the table and allow everyone to help themselves. west

BALSAMIC & HONEY-GLAZED CHICKEN BAKE “This is a dish that is worth thinking about a day ahead. The marinade will improve the flavour with time, as it penetrates and flavours the meat. You could also make this meal with chicken or turkey legs, which are very lean and good value, just amend the cooking times accordingly.” Ingredients:
4 chicken fillets (skin on) 2 carrots, thickly sliced 675g (1½lb) baby potatoes, halved 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 tbsp chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley For the marinade: 5 tbsp clear honey 1 tbsp tomato ketchup 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp soy sauce Maldon sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Lightly dressed green salad, to serve
Method:
- To make the marinade, mix the honey, tomato ketchup, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce in a small non-metallic dish until smooth. - Add the chicken, turning to coat and then cover with cling film and leave to marinade for at least 3 hours or overnight in the fridge is best. - Once the meat is marinated, preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F), gas mark 7. Bring two pans of salted water to the boil and cook the carrots for 6-8 minutes in one and the baby potatoes for 10-15 minutes in the other until par-cooked. - Drain the vegetables well and season to taste. Toss in half of the oil and arrange in an ovenproof dish. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a frying pan on a high heat. - Remove the chicken from the marinade (reserving it to use again later) and sear skin-side down for 1 minute until golden brown, then flip over and do the other side for another minute. - Place the chicken on top of the vegetables, skin-side up, and roast in the oven for about 15 minutes until the chicken and vegetables are cooked through and tender. - In the meantime, pour the remaining marinade into a small pan and simmer gently for a few minutes or until slightly reduced and thickened. - About 5 minutes before the end of cooking time, brush the chicken all over with the reduced down marinade and return to the oven to glaze. - Sprinkle with parsley and serve straight to the table with some green salad to hand around separately.

Known locally as the Abbey, this Dominican Friary was founded in the mid13th century by Maurice Fitzgerald. Patrick Kavanagh Centre

• How many fairways did you hit with your drives out of the 18 holes? • How many shots did it take you to get on to each green? • How many putts did you take for all of the 18 holes? • If in a bunker, how many shots did it take until you got the ball in the hole? • When chipping beside the green, did you get up and down at any stage? From this information you can create a goal ladder (right). Set your ultimate goal and then from the information you have gathered, put a practice plan in place to improve on your weak areas. FOR EXAMPLE: There are 18 holes on the golf course. The average amount of putts per green is 2. If at the end of your round you have recorded more than 36 putts then your putting needs urgent attention. Putting accounts for 50% of an overall score and too often we fail to apply the same amount of practice time to it. OR... Chipping: You have discovered you are taking two chips to get on the green or leaving the ball a long distance from the hole. Time to learn how to control the ball.

TOP OF LADDER & ULTIMATE GOAL: I want to lower my handicap and enjoy my game. STEP 4: During practice, watch the ball until the end result so that I learn the effect of each club being used. STEP 3: Lay out drill work so that my practice is planned and will result in my game improving by sticking to the set routine. STEP 2: Set 1 hour aside every week to practice.
STEP 1: I need to understand how to chip with each club so I can be more decisive over my shots and can get the ball closer to the hole. SET GOALS that are under your control and are achieveable. This will help maintain the motivation to succeed.
Finding the time to practice can be hard but if you can afford 1 hour of practice per week then your game will simply reap the rewards.
The key to improvement is ensuring the drill work you do on the practice fairway is designed for game improvement In this article I illustrate a very rewarding practice drill that is easy to follow. All you have to do is play the shots and watch the effect each club has on the ball once the strike occurs. There are no set rules as to which club you should chip with; anything from your 7 iron to your sand wedge. Think of the sand wedge as the most lofted and then place the clubs on the ground (above left) and watch how the face straightens out. Keep it simple and think the most lofted one will cause a high trajectory and the straightest will produce a lower flight. The important thing to know is how much height and how much roll each of the clubs will produce and the following drill will help you find out. Place three clubs on the green equal distance apart from your intended chipping position and the hole. These will aid you and help you identify distances of roll and carry. For example: does the ball roll 100% of the way to the hole or does it need to carry 50% and then roll for 50%? Before hitting any shots, free-throw a ball low along the ground towards the hole. Next, free-throw a ball high in the air and try and land it beside the hole. Ask yourself, which option will deliver the ball consistently to the hole?
Once clubs are placed on the ground, return to your chipping zone and select a 7 iron, 9 iron and a sand wedge to begin with. Use all three clubs and try to land the ball adjacent to the first club placed on the ground. How much roll after landing do each of the clubs produce? Next, do the exact same exercise but carry to the second club and see how far the ball rolls out after landing. Finally do the same exercise with all three clubs to the third club placed on the ground and observe the roll. This exercise will teach you that when chipping, it is important to know how close you want to land the ball with your first bounce to the hole. Next, select a straight face club and play your chip shot and watch how the ball flies low to the hole. The key to your practice is to judge the length of backswing and follow through to perfect the correct pace to carry you to the hole. Select a more lofted club and watch the ball. How much does it carry and how much does it roll? Judge the carry and roll by hitting to the three clubs on the ground and then watch what happens to the ball when it lands. GOOD LUCK! west

t goes without saying that gambling and shows are at the centre of most holiday-goers’ itinerary. (And rightfully so, after all it is the entertainment capital of the world.) But, don’t dare for a second believe that’s it – Las Vegas offers a diverse range of attractions and activities which allows visitors to craft an experience with much greater depth and dimension, and at a reasonable price too!
The STRIP
At the core of Sin City is the infamous 7km Strip (see left image) on which the more renowned hotels, casinos and majority of attractions are located. And as any tour guide will tell you, there’s simply no better place to stay and subsequently experience Las Vegas. Despite development having somewhat slowed down in the wake of the global recession, the 11 billion dollar City Centre complex recently opened to rave reviews while other attractions including new restaurants from the likes of Nobu and superlative endeavours like the High Roller, (a huge observation wheel even taller than the London Eye) ensure Las Vegas has something fresh with each passing season.
Where to STAY
Spilling with majestic resorts, Las Vegas isn’t shy of accommodation with hotels everywhere you turn. Take your pick from the absolute luxury of Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas to the mythological Caesar’s Palace, or simply opt for the more iconic resorts such as the Mirage and MGM Grand to name but a few. While Circus Circus may have the lowest rates on the Strip, it’s a very long walk from the far northern end to where most of the action is in the south. Keep in mind the blazing Nevada sun, the bustling sidewalks and distance proves a real obstacle, especially for the elderly and families with kids. True to perception, resorts are like thematic universes in

themselves, so you’re likely to want to spend a fair amount of time hanging out where you sleep. Particularly for families, hotels such as Mandalay Bay, Excalibur and Circus Circus are popular choices as they provide fun atmospheres and a range of kid-friendly activities on site. For an extra dose of luxury, hotels such as the Cosmopolitan, Venetian and the Palazzo really encapsulate grandeur. Equipped with famous chefs, spas and swimming pools that only travel brochures are made of - here visitors can truly indulge in paradise. Whether you stay at one of these hot spots or not, the facilities are open to the general public for a fee. The same goes for Vegas nightlife, with the hottest bars and clubs usually located in the nicest resorts. TIP: Stay in the central or southern section of the Strip. Here, you are within the more popular side where it is easy to check out nearby hotels, attractions and shopping complexes.
What to DO
When it comes to attractions and entertainment, Las Vegas actually suffers from an excess of options. Many visitors won’t even scratch the surface so it’s important to plan ahead and prioritise. From the city’s synonymous shows to helicopter tours of the sights, you might be best to write a to-do list now. Let’s begin with free enjoyable entertainment – namely the dancing fountains outside the Bellagio Hotel, the exploding volcano at the Mirage and the various animal encounters in top hotels such as the lions at MGM Grand. Now to splash some cash. Set aside money for the attractions that charge admission, as these really are the coolest ones. Take a gondola ride at the Venitian or rub shoulders with the greats in Madame Tussauds before daring to board the thrill rides at America’s largest indoor theme park Adventuredome at Circus Circus or at the top of the Stratosphere Tower – a terrifying but incredible experience to say the least! While gambling is likely to be on the agenda, be careful

not to blow your ticket fund for at least one quality show. There are constantly world-class talents on display – from the mind-boggling acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil to Broadway musicals such as Jersey Boys, and not to mention, the infamous Caesar’s Palace Colosseum tenant which is currently Celine Dion. If time allows, also visit Las Vegas’ historic Downtown district to see where it all began. After years of playing second fiddle to the glitz and glamour of the Strip, Glitter Gulch, as it’s known, hosts a dozen of casinos and hotels along Fremont Street which are notably quirky and cool. They’re also all within an easy five-minute walk of each other and offer a change of pace from the exhausting Strip. Of course, there’s a whole world to explore outside of the Strip. Rent a car and spend an afternoon among the magical red rocks of the Valley of Fire State Park or take a helicopter tour of Hoover Dam and the magnificent Grand Canyon. The options are endless.

Restaurants and eateries are never out of sight. And depending on what cuisine you’re after, there is an abundance of choice. The top restaurants in the city are considered to include Alex and Barolotta Ristorante Di Mare at Wynn, Cut at the Palazzo, Guy Savoy at Caesar’s Palace, Picasso at Bellagio, RM Seafood at Mandalay Place, L’atelier and Joel Robuchon at MGM Grand to name but a few. For more traditional food however, check out the likes of Planet Hollywood, Cheesecake Factory and Hard Rock Café. You’ll never be stuck for choice.

A focus on the French Designer by Gordon Annan
I
always remember the first time I encountered the work of the French designer, Philippe Starck. It was in the mideighties and I was already well into my design career and working as an interior designer in Belfast. My employer at the time showed me chairs designed by Starck… even the names were radical; Miss Wirt, Dr. No, Costes chair and Wendy Wright to name but a few. And whilst they had that telling look of “why didn’t somebody think of that before,” they were more than challenging, non-compliant in character – they were aggressive in design. The impact of this first exposure has lasted with me; but Philippe Starck has and is designing much more than furniture - Philippe Starck is a legend. An extraordinary mix of pop star, mad inventor and romantic philosopher, he is also probably the most famous designer in the world. His work is everywhere from the chic hotels of New York to the private apartment of a French President; from hundreds of thousands of chairs and lamps in cafes and homes all over the globe to the toothbrush in your bathroom.
THE MAN AND HIS RISE TO FAME Indeed this ability to transfer talent and success in design of buildings and interiors through to furniture and everyday objects is a trait of many of the greats in the history of design such as Le Corbusier and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Born in 1949, he has been an active designer since the age of 19 but his career took off in earnest in 1982 when he designed the interior for the private apartments of the French President, Francois Mitterrand. He has worked as an interior designer and product designer since 1975. His most recent work includes an

The Felix Restaurant, Hong Kong optical mouse for Microsoft, Luxury Yachts and in 2009, even reality TV realised his fame through his appearance on the BBC 2 programme, Design for Life in which 12 aspiring design students competed to gain a six month placement with Starck’s Paris based company. He lives in 4 different cities – Paris, New York, Burano (Italy) and London. Unlike rock stars, he doesn’t feel the need to wear sunglasses indoors but could turn up at meetings with top corporate clients aboard one of his motorcycles (a man after my own heart) as he keeps one in each city with converted ignition locks to accept the same key! Perhaps his most famous designed item is a juicer for Alessi known as the Juicy Salif, his most famous furniture item; possibly the Louis Ghost chair – a tongue in cheek version of the Baroque Louis XV chair but in completely clear acrylic while his most widely known interior is a toss-up between the Felix Restaurant in Hong Kong – which I am lucky enough to have experienced and Café Costes in Paris.
DESIGN Unlike most other new design artists, Starck’s work does not focus on the creation of provocative and expensive single pieces. Instead his product designs are of usable household items which Starck himself helps to market for mass production. His products are often stylized, streamlined and organic in their look and are also constructed using unusual combinations of materials (such as glass and stone, plastic and aluminium, plush fabric and chrome etc).
PRODUCTS The Juicy Salif has become an affordable and popular cult item; he designed the first toothbrush sanitizer and in 2008 he created wireless speakers for the iPod and iPhone known as Zikmu Parrot. He has also a line of watches with Fossil – see the photo here of my own nephew’s O Ring watch.

RESTAURANT INTERIORS His design for the Café Costes in Paris (1984) is world famous while The Felix restaurant scheme for the Peninsula Hotel (1994) which overlooks Hong Kong harbour is definitely the only place where a visit to the loo is a memorable design experience! Famously the urinals face full height glass windows (on the 28th floor) and why should washing your hands be at a normal basin with a tap when it could be communally at a gigantic, beautifully sculpted marble slab with elegant spouts rising like swan necks? In 2002 when I first visited the Felix it was like I was entering an inner sanctum of a design guru – even the lift car was unique and the wall panelling in the Oyster Bar is very like the exterior cladding on the Belfast Titanic building but conceptualised here 18 years before. Ascending up to the Felix Cocktail Bar is a journey up a curved staircase within a large cone where perimeter walls and curtains create counterintuitive diagonals all increasing the sense of anticipation and ultimately arrival at the intimate Cocktail Bar with its iconic harbour view.
HIS MOTIVATION (which must be phenomenal) AND ENLIGHTENMENT
FURNISHINGS In addition to the Ghost chair mentioned earlier, Starck has designed many other furniture items for the Italian company Kartell including the Bubble Club sofa and armchair as well as the La Boheme stool. But a quick glance at the official Starck website (www.starck.com) will soon reveal the many other companies who over a 30 year period have put his dynamic furniture designs into production including such companies as Duravit and Hans Grohe who make sanitary-ware and water taps.
In his first compendium of his products and designs (1999), Starck explains that his early research lead him to try to describe the equipment that he would like to see his friends and neighbours use or catch a glimpse of the type of (interior) environment that he would like to see his children grow up in. He actually set about trying to find, collect, correct or create objects which in his view were honest, responsible and respectful of people – not necessarily beautiful objects but good objects. These items he said did convey a certain spirit, an alternative direction, a new way of being and says they are for people who are ‘non-consumers’. “The non-consumer is an individual who is alert and wary but also open, creative, enthusiastic and finally extremely upstream and modern”. Omagh Academy Musical Extravaganza The Strule Arts Centre recently hosted Omagh Academy’s annual Spring Concert. A roaring success, the audience were treated to a wide variety of musical styles ranging from classical recitals, country and western ‘hoe-downs’ and tribal dances. All funds raised on the night were in aid of NIMTT (Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust), which specialises in providing music therapy across the province.
