Mercers Jewellers Undergoes re-fit
S
ince 1881, Mercers’ expertise and unrivalled merchandise have set the family business apart as one of the country’s most interesting jewellers. The Enniskillen boutique, which has just undergone a re-fit and can be seen in the featured photos, offers customers a welcoming atmosphere, high-quality displays, smiling staff and unmatched service and assistance, whatever the requirement. When T.A. Mercer Esq. opened its doors to trade in Enniskillen, little did he think he would be starting a business that would evolve, change, move with the times, survive into a fourth generation and offer the same basic principles today that he envisaged. Priding themselves on providing the best available products and the best possible service, current owner Jonathan Styles, together with his team offer various exquisite ranges, with something for everyone. “We have an interesting range of small European companies producing pieces of jewellery with interesting mixtures of pearls, coloured gemstones and rose gold, yellow gold and platinum settings.” If you believe that enthusiasm is infectious, than at Mercers you will be drawn in with the tremendous depth of stock in certified diamonds and renowned watch brands including Rolex, Breitling, Omega, Tag Heuer, Rado, Longines and Raymond Weil. One of Mercers’ secrets of success is their workshop on the premises, with two full-time watchmakers, offering fast and efficient servicing for their fine ranges of watches. Attracting customers both locally and further afield, don’t miss out on this particular jewel located in the heart of Fermanagh.

WHY IT WORKED...
Filled with Anderson’s signature quirky patterns and motifs such as paisley tops and cartoony print sweaters, this is ultimately a fun, refreshing collection. Mixed with influences of youth, pop and subcultures, this collaboration is full of cool. If you haven’t been lucky enough to get your hands on a piece from the first collection, don’t fret, a second J.W. Anderson for Topshop collection will hit stores early next year.
J.W. Anderson for Topshop The Tyrone-born award-winning fashion designer joined forces with acclaimed high street retailer Topshop for the first time this autumn, with a 55 piece collection including everything from baseball jackets to shift dresses, shoes to stationery – all at affordable prices. Anderson told Vogue UK: “I feel collaborations should be a reflection, not something that veers off into another zone. The high street and the luxury market are inherently close. Without one the other doesn’t exist. I feel like that is modernity now.”
Zandra Rhodes for M&S Back in 2009, fresh from designing for rock stars and royalty, Zandra Rhodes, known for being rejected by the traditional British fashion establishment for her outlandish designs, formed a new, unexpected partnership with high street staple Marks & Spencer. For the collection, which made it into 55 stores nationwide, Rhodes reinvented typical M&S holidaywear staples and emblazoned them with her trademark bright fuchsia and citrus tangerine tones, paisley prints and bold floral motifs. Of the collaboration Rhodes said: “I am thrilled to see my prints and beautiful clothes reach a wide range of consumers. Marks & Spencer do a wonderful product range and I have always wanted to design for them.”
Giles Deacon for New Look The ultimate collaborator, Giles Deacon has had many partnerships with various labels, however it is his ongoing collaborations with high street chain store New Look for which he is most recognised. The collection, Gold by Giles, began back in 2007 and has since been followed by a menswear collection, a beachwear range and most recently a full make-up collection. Deacon’s range of women’s clothing for New Look reveals his playful style by incorporating patterned skirts, jersey dresses and skinny jeans, all with a unique twist. The collection blends high fashion and high street style to a tee, treading the fine line between cutting-edge and wearable fashion.
Why It Worked...
Collaborations come and go, season by season and often fade into a fashion memory. However, there are a few genius collaborations that just keep on giving and after more than 10 collections, Gold by Giles for New Look is one of them, making it one of the most withstanding, successful partnerships to date.
fashion’s greatest
COLLABORATIONS From Stella McCartney to Versace, the High Street continues to attract top name designer collaborations. With so many collections to catch our thrifty eye, fashion stylist Eve Brannon spotlights her favourites and tells us why they’re the best!
Jenny Packham for Debenhams This year it was announced that British designer, Jenny Packham, would be joining the Designers at Debenhams portfolio with a new women’s, accessories and children’s occasionwear collection entitled No. 1 Jenny Packham. Best known for her sumptuous bridal gowns and ready-to-wear collections, No. 1 Jenny Packham is a collection of everything we love about the designs – a mixture of softness and structure, floral blooms and intricate prints.
WHY IT WORKED...
From this collaboration we expected the same exquisite detail synonymous with Jenny Packham – and that’s what we got. Featuring wrapping, pleating and gentle draping of fabrics, in a variety of styles from floor-sweeping maxis to organza prom dresses. The womenswear collection is complemented beautifully with a range of elegant accessories including bags, jewellery, shoes and headwear.
Matthew Williamson for H&M In Spring 2009, British designer Matthew Williamson was the next designer to join Karl Lagerfeld, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf in designing a collaborative capsule collection for H&M. Williamson, renowned for his vibrant use of colour and print, often caters to such celebrities as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kylie Minogue.

WHY IT WORKED...
Industry experts attribute the M&S Zandra Rhodes campaign with a continuing sequence of initiatives to modernise the brand, after M&S had been accused over recent years of losing touch with their customer. Follow-on initiatives since this campaign have included other celebrity endorsements, as well as focusing on affordable ranges and bringing the store back to the forefront of the British High Street.
WHY IT WORKED...
This collaboration was the most successful designer partnership for H&M to date and the first to consist of two collections as a result. Williamson’s high profile, yet affordable luxury was a huge pull for female customers – increased by the up-market, exclusive packaging. H&M were acclaimed for presenting this collection as a ‘high fashion shopping experience’. west

“
I think comedy is useful. I think it’s a good barometer of what people are thinking, and I think a comedian’s job, if they’re doing their job properly is to try and put their finger on the pulse
“
s the phone rings, a voice suddenly comes over me. Ironically it’s Father Ted, reminding me, just like in the TV series, “Whatever you do, don’t call him Dougal.” The last thing we’d want is a real life Bishop Len Brennan and ‘The Son’ fiasco on our hands, and with one of the show’s stars no less. So much pressure, so much irony… thankfully he picks up, albeit a shaky line. “Ah Ardal, how’s things?” Phew. While he’s familiar to millions as Father Dougal McGuire from Channel 4’s Father Ted and BBC1’s My Hero, Ardal is a highly acclaimed stand up who has toured to sell-out audiences internationally and has released two top ten stand-up DVDs. Just recently, he played Enniskillen’s Blakes of the Hollow as part of the town’s Fermanagh Live Festival – his first time playing in the county despite originally being from Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. Performing to a sell-out crowd, the funnyman did not disappoint. Packed with hilarious observations and surrealism, Ardal gave his “half-baked take” on the world to a bellowing audience – covering topics such as politics, religion, the economy and family with ease and much amusement. Growing up however, it might be hard to believe that O’Hanlon showed no early signs of a future career as a performer. “I grew up in a very sort of quiet, sober, studious household. I spent all my spare time out the back kicking a ball around or else buried in a book,” he recalls. “I think my parents are shocked, and even to this day are still scratching their heads thinking ‘how did that fella slip through the net’?” It wasn’t until nearing the end of secondary school that Ardal, the third of six children, realised comedy was for him. Shy and withdrawn, he entered a school debate – “just to give it a go!” – and ended up making his classmates laugh...

“By then I suppose I was a little bit of a clown but in a sort of a normal schoolboyish way with my friends. I guess they dared me to get up and make a mockery of the debate. That was my first ever public performance you could say. I was about 17 at the time and I remember just getting up there and I wrote a fairly funny speech – or what I thought was funny at the time, and you know… the boys laughed and it was a great reaction.” His goal was realised in the late ‘80s when he set up the Comedy Cellar in the International Bar in Dublin with fellow comedians Barry Murphy and Kevin Gildea – effectively at a time when Ireland had no comedy scene at all, with very little happening in the capital or elsewhere. Soon after, O’Hanlon started to become a comedy fixture, winning the Hackney Empire Act of The Year Competition in 1994 and being spotted by Graham Linehan the following year for a little show they were calling ‘Father Ted.’
“
to be even considered for a part in a sitcom, so to this day I’m still a little bit surprised that it actually happened at all.” In the past Ardal has expressed discomfort in people turning up at his shows expecting to meet him as Dougal. He is of course, very far removed from the infamously inept character. If anything, Ardal rather refreshingly accepts and appreciates the legacy, recognising the impact the role has had on his career.

“I suppose you can never underestimate how popular the show was, so it’ll always rear its head no matter where you go, you know. And I understand that, I notice from my own kids, they’re getting into it and their friends are getting into it, so you know, it’s enduring and I wouldn’t sniff at it
either. I owe it an awful lot; it’s always been great for me.” Throughout the years, Ardal has consistently returned to the stage, having recently toured around Ireland in May and June with new material. Asked how the dates went, he tells us “good”, also informing us that it’s all part of the cycle of putting together a new show and having to bring it around the country to “test the water”. Yet, perhaps surprisingly, O’Hanlon says that he rarely gets an easy ride from Irish audiences. “They [Irish audiences] can even be harder sometimes. More judgemental because they feel they know you and as you know, everyone in Ireland fancies themselves as a bit of a comic anyway. So Irish audiences are actually a really true test of your stuff,” he explains. Not forgetting his kids, who are the quickest to tell him if he was funny or not. “It really keeps you on your toes,” says Ardal, “but that’s part of the joy of doing it as well. I like the live arena and I really look forward to every show – possibly because I don’t do as much as I did a few years ago where I’m not touring from one end of year to the next, so I really take every show quite seriously and really look forward to doing it.” Needless to say, keeping on top of material is extremely important for Ardal when putting a show together – there is always the need to improve and refine work.

With equal rights and successful careers in our back pockets, women have never had it so good... So why then is everything such a struggle asks Glenda McCauley

T
he end of the month is notorious for being a financial playing field. Our wage has evaporated into a hazy mist of bills, shopping and general good times, and before we even get time to take off the tags, we’re suddenly down to our last few pennies and being forced to ‘leave things over’. How has this happened? How have we spent all our money... again? In a nutshell, the end of the month sucks. Everyone’s lives are temporarily on hold as they eagerly count down the days, hours and minutes until payday. But at least it’s comforting to know that everyone’s in the same boat, right? Wrong. Somehow, our male mates always seem to have more money than us, more than enough mullah for the latest gadget or for a good ole’ shindig or few. They earn a similar wage and have the same general outgoings, so why are we the only ones coming up short? As baffling as it might seem, the truth is simple. Money management isn’t our strong point, we’ve never been too financially savvy. For years, women have always been the bigger spenders, largely because of having to depend on our looks more than men have. And all that self-maintenance costs serious money. Before, it was primarily about gaining male attention, but now it’s become just as integral to our careers in terms feeling confident and making an impression.
“
Being a woman simply comes with programmed costs, both physical and emotional. And on that basis alone, we’re already down a few (hundred) pounds cheers, genetics!
“
THE TRUE COST OF BEING A WOMAN
But of course, it isn’t necessarily all our fault. Being a woman simply comes with programmed costs, both physical and emotional. And on that basis alone, we’re already down a few (hundred) pounds - cheers, genetics! In a report into women’s spending, Professor Karen J. Pine of the University of Hertfordshire explains that there is a significant proportion of women for whom shopping is used to neutralise emotions or replace negative feelings with positive ones. “When they feel they need cheering up, or at times of emotional turmoil, spending money has become the means by which they regulate their emotions.”
on to the very salary we’re trying to grapple with? If it isn’t bad enough that men are keeping their expenses in better check, unfortunately for us, this gap can substantially widen as we get older, due to reasons such as having children and having to work part-time instead. With all this to consider, it is any wonder that women of today – while we’ve never had it ‘so good’ – have never felt so stressed? It cannot be denied that the standard of living has improved dramatically from previous generations, however; as a result we also encounter endless modern day demands. The demand to look good, the demand to be liked, the demand to be in control but passive and the demand to juggle home, work and family. According to research commissioned by Regus - the world’s largest provider of flexible workplaces – working professionals are particularly feeling the pressure. Having canvassed the opinions of 2500 people, it was found that almost half said their stress levels have risen over the past year, with Dr Clare Kelliher, Professor of Work and Organisation at the Cranfield School of Management confirming that “levels of stress continue to increase across the country.” And so, with endless demands, and extensive expectation, women are undoubtedly feeling the stress and struggle like never before. Just take Yahoo’s newest CEO and recent mum Marissa Mayer for example. Although brilliantly inspiring for women everywhere, and evidence of just how far we’ve come, it was Mayer’s reassurance to her new employers that her maternity leave would only be “a few weeks long” and that she’d work throughout it, that left women everywhere with a bad taste in their mouths. Only a few weeks? What does this say for mothers who took 6 months, 9 months, the full year?
To add to our emotional shopping fragility, let’s not forget that we also acquire many costs that men simply don’t. From make-up to sanitary products... the list goes on. And let’s not get started on accessories. Could we even imagine a life without such costs? We might be richer but if don’t look or feel good, would we even hold
Is this what it’s come to? And what could it mean for expectant mothers from here on out? Needless to say, if expectation felt like a weight on your shoulders before, surely it has all the potential to break your back now. No matter how you decide to look at it, there is no denying that although being a woman is fabulous for the most
COVERfeature part, it certainly comes with a price. It’s by no means easy balancing family life with work life – which has merely become somewhat of a requirement in today’s economic climate – on what for many people is a limited to no budget. With this, perhaps we ought to lighten the load and learn to not sweat the small stuff - what will be, will be. And who cares if you’re having a bad hair day? Who cares if your house isn’t clean? Relax, chill out and more importantly… take reign of those finances now before you find yourself digging up the sofa for loose change. The true cost of being a woman, eh? Though it’s often easier said than done, cutting costs – even the most minute – can make a noticeable difference. But should you need a little more guidance, find enlisted top tips to help you manage your money: TAKE CONTROL Become more aware of your emotions and how they affect the way you behave with money. Also, keep record of your expenses so you can see exactly where your money goes, allowing you to address the things you could cut-back on. SET A BUDGET Creating a budget could be your weapon against the money monster. Just add up your incomings and subtract your outgoings to work out what you’ve got left, dividing by four for a weekly budget. That way you will know exactly how much dosh you’ve got to play with each week. DO YOUR RESEARCH Make better decisions by spending time reading up on money issues. Check out financial websites, magazines and newspapers for helpful tips and advice on everything from cutting costs to the best kind of credit cards and savings accounts. LOOK DEBT IN THE EYE Face up to any money owed before starting to save, especially if you have huge interest rates hanging over your head. Not only will this avoid long-term debt eating away at your finances, but it will also fill you with a great sense of accomplishment. KNOW TOMORROW COMES Now, more than ever, we need to take action for a secure future and not delay those all-important decisions. west

OF THE 1. Lily Cole
Jenny Byers uncovers the rise of unconventional beauty, otherwise defined as: ‘When a person doesn’t fit the standard defined as beautiful, yet intrigues in an inexplicably beautiful way’
W
henever you think of someone beautiful does a clichéd familiar image automatically come to mind? Perhaps a woman with bright eyes, flawless skin, long legs and a figure that is fit for the red carpet or, in the male world, is it muscles from top to toe and just the right amount of facial hair complete with smouldering eyes? Either way, the confines that determine ‘beauty’ are often based on the celebrity world and those apparently ‘perfect’ bodies we are faced with everyday. The world we live in is hugely focused on physical appearance; both women and men strive to look their best and why wouldn’t we? Our lives are littered with classic beauties that fit the ‘conventionally beautiful’ bill, but if we are honest about it, they generally look the same from person to person. There is an ‘ideal beauty’ that the world commercialises and if you don’t reach these requirements, you’re apparently not beautiful, yet there are iconic women in the history of fashion who have never fitted the bill of the ‘ideal beauty’. Kate Moss once said that she wasn’t beautiful, just different. And that’s what unconventional beauties are: different. In recent years, predictable beauty has been forced to take a side step to make way for a new wave of desirable men and women. Beauty in itself has taken on a whole new dimension – being beautiful, attractive and sought-after now stretches far beyond the buxom blondes and leggy waifs that once dominated Hollywood (thank goodness!). Instead, we are becoming more engrossed in those unique and interesting beauties who are less than picture-perfect and who can challenge the conventions of an image-obsessed world. Unconventional beauty is, well, unconventional.

Adele It celebrates the quirky, individual features and characteristics that make a person unique and showcases what really is beautiful beyond what the eye can see. Looking a little ‘different’ to what is deemed typically beautiful has been made fashionable and as a result we are embracing a broader definition of ‘beauty’. Today, casting agents, best dressed lists and critics everywhere are taking on women who succeed in breaking the usual ‘good looking’ mould - and we love them too. Women and men who have made their way into the limelight with raw talent and for reasons other than flawless skin, perfect hair and dazzling smiles, are growing in numbers. Find enlisted just five of my favourite celebrity beauty starlets on the page opposite > Whether or not you consider this group of women to be traditionally or unconventionally beautiful, what they do have in common is that they each have unique qualities that, combined with their amazing talents, make them exclusively beautiful and hugely successful. And isn’t it wonderful and reassuring that we can celebrate women with every combination of features, at every size, every age, and with every shade of skin. Doesn’t this cut the need to divide us women into categories? Do we have to make a big deal out of it when someone falls outside the mythological standard of what someone else may consider to be conventionally beautiful? Beauty, in its entirety, is less about bone structure and more about having individual presence and the confidence in not being afraid to stand apart from the crowd. It seems that beauty has come to be defined not by the physical image but by charm, talent and charisma... and long may it last!
Famous for having one of the most amazing voices in the music world, the 24-year-old has faced her fair share of pressure to lose weight but has resolutely fought back. In previous magazine interviews she has admitted: “I don’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like. I don’t like going to the gym... I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine”. Don’t we all? Amen to that.
With her wider than wide set eyes and small mouth, model Lily Cole looks more like a real life doll than sought after catwalk star – but that’s why we love her! Her baby face, innocent guise and fiery red hair prove that individuality should be celebrated and this new ‘unconventional’ beauty craze is actually what makes some stars shine.
2. Rooney Mara Exotic-looking Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) challenges traditional notions of beauty with her jarringly severe cut and hair colour, a move that sets her apart from the mass of longhaired starlets. And what’s more, she still manages to look beautiful; she is a really pretty girl, with a very symmetrical face but her haircut is very boyish and imp-like, pairing beauty with masculinity.
3. Sarah
Jessica Parker
Before her Sex and the City days, Sarah Jessica Parker was told to get a nose job. She refused, saying that too many stars are “airbrushed, stripped of any quirks and defining features”, making them look “common”. And has this held her back? Not at all, SJP should be admired for her self confidence, strength and determination in standing up for herself and continuing to do what she does best!
Kate Middleton
Not in the years since Jennifer Lopez made her finest asset famous has any woman been so behind, well, endorsing their behind. Managing to give sister Kate a run for her money at the wedding of the year, Pippa Middleton’s posterior in that dress quickly gave women reason to embrace their own curvy derrières... and men plenty of reason to appreciate it too!

Uphill Lie The secret to playing these shots: Ball towards higher foot, weight towards lower foot. • By positioning the weight on the lower foot, this should result in your shoulders being angled parallel to the slope of the ground. (Left image) • The slope will affect the distance the ball will travel as the ball tends to fly higher, so it is always good to select one or two extra clubs to make up the distance. • The ball will spin right to left as the slope gets steeper so make sure to adjust your aim to the right so that your ball finishes on target. (Practice from different slopes to find out how much adjustment is required.) west
• Once again the shoulders should be parallel to the ground following the slope, with hands opposite the inside of left thigh. • With the downhill lie, the ball will move left to right depending on the severity of the slope so alignment adjustment to the left is required to compensate and allow the ball to finish on target. • Swing along the angle of the slope. The clubface will de-loft and the ball will fly with a low trajectory.
hroughout the course of the year, we have concentrated on the full golf swing and the basic requirements to improve accuracy and distance, with the focus on getting the basic fundamentals correct. Once these have been achieved you can take your game to a new level by learning how to adjust the fundamentals to suit awkward lies and achieve the best results. This way you are geared to approach any shot presented to you.

Remember the secret: Ball towards higher foot, weight towards lower foot.
Ball Above Feet
• Hold down the handle to compensate for the ball being closer to the body. This will allow for a clean strike through impact. • The ball will tend to spin right to left, so to compensate adjust your alignment to the right so the ball will get back on target. • Be conscious of maintaining a good balance during the swing. The legs become very restricted and the hands and arms take over this swing. The feeling of keeping your hips level through the swing should lead to good balance.
Ball Below Feet
• When the ball is below your feet it is important to hold the club at the top of the handle. This allows you to maintain the best possible posture and reach the clubhead to a lower arc. This will help promote a clean strike through impact. • In order to ensure balance, it is good to take a slightly wider stance than normal. (Just outside shoulder width with irons) • The ball flight will be left to right so adjust alignment to the left so that the ball flight will return the ball on-line. The flight of the ball will be left to right so be sure to adjust alignment to compensate. Extra club is required as a left to right ball flight is very weak. (Only through practice will you know how much extra club is required) west

On cold winter mornings, it gets you off to a good start and takes no more than ten minutes to cook.’
Ingredients:
It’s important that the porridge has a nice soft dropping consistency, so add a little more milk if you think it needs it. To serve, spoon the porridge into warmed bowls. Drizzle each one with some honey and Irish Mist and serve with plenty of cream poured on top.
Method:
One of the last things we do at night in the restaurant is steep the porridge oats in the milk and water in the fridge, as leaving them overnight makes them lovely and soft so that they cook much quicker. They can also be made the night before and reheated gently in a pan on the hob.
• 100g (4oz) porridge oats (organic if possible) • 300ml (1/2 pint) milk (plus a little extra if necessary) • 4 tbsp clear honey • 4 tbsp Irish Mist • 150ml (1/4 pint) cream Place the porridge oats, milk and 150ml (1/4 pint) water in a heavy-based pan. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 8–10 minutes, until the mixture has slightly thickened, stirring all the time.
Cook Ahead:
food for thought
‘This is a new dish on our menu that has developed over time. The cinnamon gives a fantastic aromatic spice to the dish, which is a wonderful contrast to the creamy risotto and earthy lentils.’ Method:
Place the quail in a shallow non-metallic dish. Rub olive oil all over them, then sprinkle over the cinnamon and rub it evenly into the flesh. Cover with clingfilm and chill overnight to allow the flavours to penetrate the flesh. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F/gas mark 6). To cook the risotto, blanch the peas until tender, then drain and set aside until needed. Heat the stock in a pan. Melt the butter in a separate sauté pan, then add the onion and garlic and sauté for 2 minutes. Add the Arborio rice. Stir well with a wooden spoon and slowly add a ladleful of the warm stock, stirring until absorbed. Continually add ladlefuls of the stock, stirring continuously until each ladleful is absorbed. Simmer gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally throughout. When the rice is nearly cooked, add the Parmesan, truffle oil and herbs along with the blanched peas. Season to taste. Keep warm but be careful not to overcook. Meanwhile, to cook the prepared quail, heat an ovenproof non-stick pan over a medium heat. Add the butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil, then cook the quail for 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
Place the pan in the oven and roast the quail for another 12 minutes. Turn once, making sure it’s not too pink. Remove from the oven and leave to rest for at least 5 minutes, then carefully remove the legs and breast from the bone. While the quail is roasting, heat 1 tablespoon of the rapeseed oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the beech mushrooms for about 1 minute, until softened. Stir in the parsley and season to taste. Keep warm. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of rapeseed oil in a separate large frying pan and break in the quail’s eggs. Cook for about 2 minutes, until the yolks are still soft. Drain on kitchen paper and then stamp out with a 4.5cm (1 3/4in) straight-sided cutter. Keep warm. To serve, garnish each plate with the basil purée and lemon olive oil powder. Spoon on the risotto and sit the quail breasts on top. Add the balsamic lentils and put the legs on top, then add a fried egg to each plate. Spoon around the beech mushrooms and garnish with the mushroom and salad bundles and micro salad. west

Loft plaster wall panels
Furniture
Bursting with new ideas, 100% Design had several innovative furniture designs on show many from outside the UK. A bunk bed known as the Boscobed (pictured left) actually grows with the child in the sense that it morphs into a single bed, play area and study desk. Colourful and strong, Boscobed is marketed as an investment useable for a lot more than a couple of years of childhood. (www.bblackbeans.com) The Ray wall shelving system by Italian architect Matteo Gerbi is bravely entering into a packed and competitive market with such big players as Ikea and Habitat so it’s got to be good – or better still, innovative to gain success. The supports for the lineal shelving pieces are not only the wall fixing points but a design feature in themselves. This combined with the general versatility and colour will surely make it a winner.

Klickity Pendant Lights
100% DESIGN
This is the name of the UK’s premier design event held in London at the end of September and now in its 18th year with 2012 boasting new organisers. Design is intrinsically about the future; it has driven the invention and refinement of products and services that define the way we live. Since its launch, 100% Design has showcased many of the world’s finest furniture and interior designers and provided insights into lifestyles and activities to come. This year the show embraced the latter by adopting the theme of ‘Future Living’. The Earls Court complex was divided into 4 zones – interiors, kitchens and bathrooms, ecodesign and build, and office. We all remember the signs at exhibitions over the years which said ‘Home of the Future’ yet they were inevitably disappointing – well the Yo! house was one of the centre pieces of the show illustrating a prototype room 900 sq. ft (84 sq. m) which was designed with flexibility and adaptability in mind but was really designed for apartment living. But what about new actual innovative products?

Mr Perswell digital wallpaper
Wall Treatment
Breaking through the traditional barriers of even textured exclusive wall covering, the Polish company Loft showed their plaster wall panels. Very 3D, the panels can be left abutted like tiles or with the joints filled in. They can be painted and even be repaired and sanded down if they get damaged. They certainly make for a feature wall with a difference. If that’s too radical for you there’s always the unusually named Mr Perswell who are offering bespoke digital wallpaper which of course can be used for either feature walls or whole rooms. If you’re seeking individuality then this could be for you.
Lighting
Legislation for new build houses, not to mention, consumer awareness of Eco issues has brought about increased use of very low energy LED lighting now in improved ‘warmer’ colour rendering. Altima’s Lana recessed downlight was on display at the show – particularly attractive in the trimless form which gives a very unobtrusive minimal look and will last for a very long time – probably in the region of 15 years or more compared to low voltage bulbs which have a fraction of this life. LED in many ways is the future of lighting particularly being realised now as the technology is becoming less expensive and more readily available.
Kitchens
One of the market leaders, Poggenpoll had a large display which demonstrated not only the appeal of worktop mounted down extraction but also that handleless kitchens are here to stay. I’m surprised however with the use of dark colours when it comes to high gloss, since fingermarks are an inevitability in a working kitchen.

The UK company Jouleflow Designs demonstrated that sanitary-ware doesn’t have to be white but can be layered and even multi-coloured combining beauty with function very well indeed.
Lifestyle
Klickity is the catchy name of a young Dublin company headed up by Kate Cronin and Elizabeth Fingleton and they have already great success with their range of clocks, fruit bowls, candlesticks and pendant light fittings. I found these very appealing since unlike the majority of readily available gifts and so called ‘craft’ tat, these were strong in design having a refreshing simplicity and a distinctive unifying style even down to the packaging.
What’s new in Talent? – Local! “100% Design was the energising epicentre of London Design Week and just for a short time one could almost forget there is supposed to be a recession”
What’s new in Fabrics?
Since the 100% Design exhibition doesn’t focus so much on fabrics perhaps we could balance that by looking at the new exclusive fabrics from the French Design House Casamance shown here. Renowned for seductive, exuberant weaves of mixed content, Casamance have really been at the leading edge in recent times. Like a lot of Design Houses they will release new fabrics both in January and in the autumn - with some of the very latest shown here. The Paris Texas stripe programme is woven in a coarse texture giving a real body to the fabric whereas the Millésime is a tighter cloth and more vivid colour use is enabled. The intensity of Millésime fabrics will provide drama to any room.

Claire McManus from Fermanagh has just graduated in Interior Design and is already well under way with her In-Vogue Designs company. (www.invoguedesigns.co.uk) Already having worked on a number of commissions, her flair and passion hasn’t gone unnoticed. The photo here showing a hall with spiral staircase which she detailed, along with a modern but inviting kitchen are just two examples of her design control. Essentially interested in home interiors, Claire is well equipped to advise on layouts, colour, lighting and soft furnishing. She can be contacted at invoguedesigns@hotmail.com or T: +44 (0)78 3504 3084. New innovative furnishing products and new people coming onto the design scene are surely the manifestation of a progressive industry which can only continue to succeed in improving our quality of life by solving our interior design scenarios and ultimately achieving what it’s all about – balancing that blend of function with aesthetics. Even a recession cannot restrain that zest.
