FERMANAGH LIVE & LOUD
T
his October, get ready to experience the artistic and cultural wealth of beautiful Fermanagh, when the county’s popular arts festival; Fermanagh Live (FLive), kicks off from the 4th - 7th of October. Supported by the Fermanagh District Council, Arts Council NI and local businesses, FLive will boast an array of live performers and entertainment as it embraces all art forms such as local and international music, thought-provoking drama and awe-inspiring visual arts – all of which will take place in just some of the many great intimate and landmark locations Enniskillen has to offer. Headlining the bill, Dónal Lunny and Andy Irvine will present an evening of Celtic, folk and Eastern European music. Both of these outstanding singers and songwriters, who between them play a multitude of instruments including the bouzooki, bodhran, harmonica, mandola and guitar for good measure, have played together as a duo and were also part of two celebrated groups, Planxty and Mozaic. In addition, FLive is also thrilled to welcome actor and comedian, Ardal O’Hanlon to Enniskillen. The Carrickmacross funnyman who is most-commonly known for his role as Dougal McGuire on Father Ted, is scheduled to perform at Blakes of the Hollow Comedy Night as part of their 125 year anniversary celebrations, to what is sure to be a sell-out crowd. Other dramatics will also include the Dublin production, La Locandiera; a lively adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s Italian comedy which will see Franco’s Restaurant transform into a beautiful 18th century Florentine Inn. Proud of its reputation as one of the best festivals to see performers play, talk and teach, this year is no different. From literary readings by Carlo Gébler, and a piano recital by Gareth

Knox, to brass band masterclasses by world-renowned tuba player Steve Sykes - FLive has it all! There is music and drama in abundance, with many distinguished talents performing with home-grown talent. For classical music fans, and even for those of you who aren’t (yet!), Slovakian violinist virtuoso Vladimir Jablokov and his sextet of young Slovak and Irish musicians are a mustsee. Together, they will perform a breath-taking reworking of classical works with a sprinkling of commercial music by Van Morrison, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones which are sure to get every music-lover’s foot tapping! Speaking of which, FLive also brings you Fermanagh fiddler Pat McManus followed by the bassy, electronic and techno beats from local sister DJs, Lisa and Alice Wallace who collectively make up L.A.W. - both of whom will play to a lively and energetic crowd at the Bush Bar. Other events that should tip the cap include Omagh-born songstress, Juliet Turner as well as Yankee Panky; a late-night cabaret at the Ardhowen theatre. A sell-out at last year’s festival, Jeanne Munroe (Musical Director and Boston-born pianist) and Melissa McKeague (Californian vocalist) return with a new programme of music by such notables as Andrew Lippa, Mel Brooks, Peter Winkler, Tom Lehrer and the great Stephen Sondheim – a night where fun and frivolity will be high on the agenda. While the festival will feature many ticketed events, lest we forget The Dragon parade, which is both free and fun for all the family to get involved in. Enjoy the parade as it makes its way through Enniskillen led by a large dragon and finishing with free family entertainment in the form of a bouncy castle, carousel, face-painting, balloon modelling, dressing-up, nail painting and lots of games and workshops. Following such events, check out the exhibitions that will run over the course of the weekend including ArtbyNorthwest, Enniskillen 400 and Humbly Through The Dust: a unique exhibition curated especially for Co. Fermanagh by artist and resident Dr. Helen Sharp in association with the British Council. The exhibition includes work by Grayson Perry, Tracey Emin, Henry Moore, Mark Wallinger, Sean Gooden and Maggi Hambling amongst many others, and has been curated in a such a way that these internationally recognised artists hang alongside work by some of the most exciting contemporary artists living and working on the island of Ireland. Boasting many more events, FLive is jam-packed with so much great music, drama and visual art. It is a unique opportunity for audiences to experience an exciting and exhilarating programme with an eclectic mix of events that are not to be missed! A NOVEL
Phenomenon It’s arguably one of the hottest books of modern times, but what is it about ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ that has sent women into a frenzy and buying it in their their millions? Having read literature’s latest trilogy, Jenny Byers explains the novel’s popularity and why she’s a fan...
F
ifty Shades of Grey is now the fastest selling paperback in history. And with its phenomenal success in a short space of time, it has sparked all sorts of debate and controversy surrounding sex, fantasy, desire and feminism. Since its release, it has sold 40 million copies worldwide and that feat looks set to carry on as women all over the globe continue to be drawn into the complicated and captivating relationship between virginal university graduate Anastasia Steele and 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey. And in case you haven’t already heard, the trilogy of books which is also made up of Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed by British Born author EL James, is littered with exceptionally kinky sex scenes, unforgiving bondage and male dominance. Definitely not the typical chick-lit content that conquers the mainstream publishing market, yet women in their droves (and even some men too!), are indulging in the book dubbed ‘mummy porn’. Categorized as ‘erotic fiction’, Fifty Shades of Grey has
14
west
managed to outstrip Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code to sell over a million copies in record time and top best selling charts around the world for weeks on end. The raunchy book has even given Harry Potter a run for his money. It’s the most quoted, talked about and debated novel of 2012 and begs the question, why are women so drawn to a book that surrounds sex? EL James and her trilogy are clearly a sensation that has managed to take the world by storm despite the explicit storyline, but as you would expect, Fifty Shades of Grey has not gone without criticism. Slated for being badly written, full of cliché and crudely based on the worn out story of a fantasy relationship that ultimately keeps us women ‘in our place’, the novel is full to the brim with sexual deviance, lust and desire. And because of its very adult content, critics have even suggested that the relationship between Anastasia and Christian verges on abusive thanks to Mr Grey’s infatuation with power and his love for pushing the sexual boundaries of his inexperienced lover to their limits. Some feminists
COVERbooks have gone into overdrive, criticising EL James for glorifying male dominance and implying that actually women find controlling men sexy and secretly enjoy being hurt. However, Fifty Shades of Grey is not trying to be anything conceited and although perhaps inarguably no literary masterpiece; the novel is self-confessedly uncomplicated - maybe a subtle reason for its achievement in becoming a universal topic of conversation. It is on the tip of everyone’s tongue and the devastatingly handsome Christian Grey has managed to creep into the imaginations of almost anyone who dares to be seduced by his smouldering grey eyes, power and endless wealth. Is it obvious that I am ones of those seduced readers? This book is everywhere; websites, papers, magazines and even social networking sites have turned their attention to the world of Grey and it took little convincing for me to join the hype. Now having read all three books I’m not surprised the content of Fifty Shades has captivated so many readers. I’m sure that there has been no book to date that allows women to indulge in such a shocking world of sex and pleasure under the innocent guise of a love story. EL James has pushed the boundaries of what we consider “normal” descriptions of sex and takes us into a world of S&M and sexual distortions — taking sexual gratification to the extreme and truth be told, we love it. Since it became a hit, young women and even teenagers are openly reading Fifty Shades of Grey with none of the embarrassment which would normally have accompanied such a book before and quite frankly, I don’t see why not. I found myself engrossed in the first instalment whilst waiting in an airport last July and was promptly greeted with “put that book away!” by my endearing boyfriend, but is this kind of response a man thing? Men seem more embarrassed by the book than women, or maybe they’re intimated by its content and fame amongst the female population... after all, women are not often exposed to such risqué material at arm’s length. The raunchy details in Fifty Shades of Grey may not be everyone’s cup of tea but there is a possibility that EL James has actually just been brave enough to respond to the desires of masses of modern women and gave us something a little more exciting to curl up and read. The fact is that sex sells and maybe being chained, whipped and gagged are not top of our wish list, but the fantasy that surrounds Anastasia and Christian’s sex life, the endless cries of ‘Oh My!’ and the famous Red Room of Pain have touched some nerve somewhere in women’s sensuality. What’s more, Christian Grey never deliberately hurts his lady, he treats her with respect, honesty and courtesy and has a never ending wish to buy her nice things (including several pairs of Louboutins!) so is he maybe just verging on being a version of the perfect man, albeit a little messed up? This skilfully packaged phenomenon is marketed as being liberating for women and judging by its demand, it seems that Fifty Shades of Grey has proven several things: Number one, women enjoy sex. Number two, women do like erotica. And, number three, women enjoy their erotic adventures wrapped in a handsome fantasy and safely packaged in a monogamous relationship. Fifty Shades fever has swept the nation and no matter what side of the fence you’re on, the truth is that this book allows women to divulge in a lot of fantasy, some romance and endless passion. Yes it’s controversial and probably won’t make a literature classic but this book is definitely a page turner and above all else, it’s fun. Just watch this space and wait for even more sparks to fly as there is a rumoured movie in the pipeline...! The Fifty Shades books are available online and in bookstores across UK and Ireland from £3.78 (WHSmith) and €8.99 (Easons - Trilogy for €22.99) west

JANET DEVLIN: True to herself

“
I’m looking back on the whole thing as a learning experience. Some of it was tough but it was a lot of fun too. You grow up faster I think, when you’re involved with something like that but I’ve no regrets.
“
anet is waiting at airport arrivals. She’s on her way to Bath in England for a writing rendezvous with Newton Faulkner and a taxi is overdue. Before that however, she has a date with a good book in her hotel bedroom. “It just screams rockstar, doesn’t it,” she laughs. Flying solo these days (insofar as the Devlin family no longer jets to London or wherever for the next performance), the 17-year-old is back and forward to England all the time, writing, meeting with the likes of Mr Faulkner and recording with famed producer Elliot Kennedy, all in a bid to craft that all-important first album and subsequent singles. Although she was being ironic with the rockstar comment, it probably isn’t too wide of the mark. She has had a busy year too (The X Factor is currently back on our screens for a ninth series), what with the tour, singing for the Olympic flame’s arrival in the North and all the aforementioned crafting, her decision to follow a career in music is already, though tentatively vindicated. “Things are going good,” she laughs. “Busy and good. “I’m on my way to do more writing at the minute, preparing for the album and the first single. “I had to wait ‘til the tour was over before I could release anything anyway but I’m getting there. The album should be released in January and the single will hopefully be out by my birthday (November 12th). “I’m back and forward and back and forward now all the time, but thankfully I get to be at home a lot of the time at weekends. “A lot of it’s good fun. I like the writing side of things. You go in, set up with a writer, you come up with ideas and you basically start making music. “What’s happening now is nice and since the tour it has all happened at a comfortable pace which has been brilliant. Because I’ve already met the people I’m working with, when I come here it’s as though I’m meeting up with friends.”
For non-X Factor viewers, Janet Devlin is the songbird from Gortin in Co. Tyrone who stole the show on the opening night of last year’s series, prompting a fan feeding frenzy which saw her image feature in every red top tabloid, days on end, for months. The internet too followed suit and after just a few weeks the Gortin lass became the ninth most searched for Irish singer of all time on YouTube. To put this into context, she placed above Janet Jackson in Google searches. A string of world-beating performances on the live stages of the show, interspersed with visiting Kelly Rowland in Miami, and the now infamous memory lapse during a song – ultimately resulted in the local teen placing fifth overall. But this isn’t
something she frets about – the whole not-remembering-the-words thing – well, not all the time. “I don’t think the X Factor is for everyone,” she admits. “I mean, if you’re one of those people who can’t be true to themselves, then it might not be for you. “I’m looking back on the whole thing as a learning experience. Some of it was tough but it was a lot of fun too. You grow up faster I think, when you’re involved with something like that but I’ve no regrets. “Having a career in music was the aim when I auditioned last year, that I would hopefully be able to find a life in music. Now I suppose that has happened. “I will probably watch bits and pieces of this year’s show. My mother had always watched it so I’m sure if I’m home at weekends, I’ll see some. “It would be nice I think, if there was someone on it I could back and support – someone local,” she agrees. She continued, “There’s always going to be a certain amount of pressure and nerves when it comes to live shows but now it’s a weird kind of pressure. “The whole not-remembering-thewords thing is still there only this time it’s the audience thinking, will she forget them, won’t she? It’s weird.” Being recognised in public has become a new and almost routine part of life for Janet, as is the obligatory signing of autographs everywhere she goes, something she is still coming to terms with. But the lady herself maintains she’s still the same girl who climbed onto the stage to steal the show with the Elton John classic, Your Song, 12 months ago. “I am still the same person, at least I’d like to think so,” she offers a small laugh. “I don’t feel any different anyway. I still have my same friends at home and I still get to see them. “The whole experience was exciting for me and exciting for them too. But now that the dazzle-dust has settled, I still feel like the same person.” Keep up to date with Janet on Twitter @JanetJealousy

Just Juliet A talented performer with a wicked sense of humour, Omagh-born Juliet Turner talks beginnings, influences and her up-and-coming music...

“
I find it much more enjoyable to root around in other people’s stories that interest me, and try and find something universal, something that is common in the experience. Other people have more exciting lives than I do.
“
W
ith five albums, double platinum sales and a Meteor Music Award under her belt, Juliet Turner is one of the county’s greatest singer/ songwriters. Her voice oozes sweetness and clarity, while her music fuses an intoxicating sense of discovery and adventure simply complemented by scintillating arrangements. With all this to her credit, it’s almost hard to believe that the Omaghborn songstress merely ‘stumbled’ into making what has become her craft today. “My parents bought me a guitar for my fifteenth birthday but I only started writing my own songs when I went to college in Dublin, and a friend, Steve Stockman, invited me to sing at some acoustic concerts he was organising in a cafe called The Living Room, just around the corner from Trinity College,” she explains. “I went along there, singing covers at first, then became a bit braver and wrote some songs and performed them. The response was good, so I carried on.”
COVERinterview Following this, Turner spent a year as an exchange student in Scotland during which time she was offered the chance to record with a small independent label, Sticky Music. Recorded in one two-day session, the resulting album, Let’s Hear it for Pizza, rendered enough buzz back home to land a management deal and a series of openingact dates with international artists including Bob Dylan, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Art Garfunkel, Bryan Adams and U2 to name a few. To date, the Tummery native who now resides in Co. Meath has released one live album and four studio albums; Let’s Hear it for Pizza (1996), Burn the Black Suit (2000), Season of the Hurricane (2004) and People Have Names (2008) - all to rave reviews. The latter of which was particularly anticipated following Juliet’s return to Trinity College Dublin in 2007 to undertake a degree in Clinical Speech and Language Studies – a move based on the realisation that although she wanted to continue singing, she didn’t want to be trying to make a living on the road as a singer. But such a commitment didn’t faze Juliet or conflict with her music, but rather invigorated her to produce some of her best work. The result? An album bursting with beautiful, intelligent songwriting and subtle musicianship – surely a natural art by now? “No. I have always been incredibly lazy about writing, and it’s getting worse as I get older,” she laughs. “I will put off and put off sitting down to write. “It’s rare now that I write about very personal experiences, I’ve mined that seam. So now I find it much more enjoyable to root around in other people’s stories that interest me, and try and find something universal, something that is common in the experience. Other people live more exciting lives than I do.” Reflecting on her professional and musical influences, the 39-year-old regards people who are excited by music and are finding new ways to do things as inspirations. “I’ve been working with Stephen McCartney and Rachel Coulter from Farriers over the last year, and I’ve found them to be a real shot in the arm because they’re really excited about their own writing and the band’s music,” she tells us. “I’ve found myself coasting on that, being rejuvenated by their enthusiasm and inspired by the writing, which is excellent.” And musically? “I like musicians who don’t try too hard to follow trends, who are comfortable in following their own sound but write with freshness and originality within their genre,” she explains. “There’s a guitar duo I met in Sweden last summer called Lucas and Helle who have an album called Bla Polskor that I’ve listened to a lot, also a folk singer called Josienne Clark who is quite refreshing and a guy called Ewan McLennan whose album Rags
and Robes a friend introduced me to and I really like. I also have this album called The Best Songs of 1939 which I love listening to, it’s very interesting listening to the lyrics of that time, the world is about to go to war, but people are still singing about stars and romance and they’re still dancing and having a good time and escaping to music.” Over the years, Turner has tallied up the accolades. From double platinum sales to Juliet’s favourite album, Burn the Black Suit being voted one of the top 100 Irish albums of all time, the singer has accomplished so much. Above all however, she regards her ability to stay in control of her career and to produce the kind of music she wants to, as being a key achievement. “Being independent has been very important to me, and having the freedom to step back when I’ve needed to and move forward as well - that’s been the highlight for me,” she says. “Also, meeting and opening shows for people like Al Green and Sting was exciting as well.” Looking forward, Juliet is currently working on new songs and plans to release an EP next year. Before that however, the Tyrone songstress whose live performances are an experience all in their own, will embark on a short UK tour from October which will see her play the Ardhowen Theatre as part of Fermangh Live before hoping to play the Scottish Highlands early next year. Despite having played big venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, it is more often these intimate and smaller venues that the singer prefers. “I love the easiness of it. I travel with my guitarist; we arrive at a gig, do a short sound check, and then the gig. There’s no fuss,” she explains. “I love the purity of two voices and two guitars together, the fact that very little gets in the way of the experience. I’ve performed in some enormous venues and while it’s exciting to be there, it’s hard to feel connected to the audience. They are floating somewhere at your feet, hidden by bright lights, and I really thrive on a response from an audience, being able to sense their engagement. In smaller venues, it’s much easier for me to sense the connection.” Juliet plays Fermanagh Live on 5th October. For more details, visit www.julietturner.com and www.flive.org.uk

engagement

at MERCERS Jewellers
S
hopping for the perfect engagement ring can be challenging for couples who plan to marry. But it doesn’t have to be a dreaded experience. Besides, it has become increasingly common for the future bride and groom to go ring shopping together. With the right amount of knowledge about what to look for in a ring, coupled with your excitement, this should be an enjoyable experience as you embark on committing to a life together. No matter how you go about choosing a ring, Mercers Jewellers of Enniskillen can offer you advice to help you find that perfect ring for your beloved. Over the course of a couple’s lifetime, there are at least three rings they will have to choose – from the engagement ring to wedding and anniversary rings when they wed and go on to celebrate an important milestone in their marriage. Before looking at possible rings, it is important to be aware of the settings. These include traditional Classic Solitaire, Setting with Sidestones, Pave setting, Tension setting, Three Stone setting to designer or custom settings. To help determine your choice, consider your budget if you have one and ultimately your personal tastes and preferences. However if you are unsure, the team at Mercers can advise you in choosing a suitable setting and then assist you in finding an attractive certified diamond. The ring you choose will fall into many categories. You should consider your preference in diamond – known as the ‘Four Cs’: Clarity, Carat, Cut and Colour, as well as the shape (e.g. round, pear, square, oval, heart etc.), cleaning, quality or grade. Ultimately, deciding which one to go for will once again come down to taste and budget. Take the time to consider all possibilities and trying on any potential gems! Once you have chosen your setting and diamond, it is pretty plain sailing from there. Mercers Jewellers will prepare your ring and have it ready for you to present to your partner.

ollectively known as L.A.W., Lisa and Alice Wallace are sibling DJs from Derrygonnelly who have appeared in some of the world’s most prestigious clubs. Their sound is unique, energetic… unpredictable; superlatives that sum up the siblings in equal measure and reflect their progressing status in the dance and techno industry. Sharing a long-lived obsession of techno music, the siblings grew up listening to dance on BBC Radio 1 featuring Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Annie Nightingale and Dave Pearce. But it wasn’t until their first family holiday to Ibiza and a subsequent dream that Alice, the elder of the two, considered DJing as a potential career. “I woke up one morning with the idea of working as a sister DJ and production duo, and we went from there,” she recalls. In addition, moving further afield

for university meant that both Alice and Lisa were exposed to a wider genre of dance music, eventually leading them to discover their sound within techno and developing L.A.W. into the acclaimed act is has become today. In a few short years, the duo’s success has been nothing short of astounding; having been taken under the wing of Anglo Management, alongside such notables as Pete Tong, Fat Boy Slim and Guy Gerber. Using their shared musical tastes along with their ability to work and collaborate well together, the duo have secured residencies in their hometown, Ibiza and Liverpool as well as racking up a series of appearances at some of the world’s most renowned clubs including Space, Priviledge, EsParadis, Eden, Sankeys and Afterlife. More recently, the duo released a debut EP titled AWOL to a great reception, with one track gaining

airplay on BBC Radio 1’s highly coveted ‘Introducing’ stage which showcases unsigned acts from Northern Ireland. All in all, L.A.W.’s achievements are rolling in thick and fast, with highlights thus far including playing at Carl Cox’s closing party at Space in Ibiza and playing at Sankey’s in Manchester at an all female-DJ night called Queens of the Underground. “In terms of production, a massive achievement for us was hearing our track being played on Dave Clarke’s legendary Whitenoise Radio Show along with hearing him playing it out at a club in Dublin,” they tell us. “That has been an ultimate peak for us, as he is one of biggest inspirations.” This year has been manic for the girls and it all looks set to continue with releases, remixes and gigs lined up in Dublin, Belfast, Larne, London and Fermanagh. Playing at the Bush Bar on the 5th October as part of
Fermanagh Live Festival, the girls are staying tightlipped on what we can expect but illustrate their enthusiasm to come back to the Island Town. “We played our first gig ever in Tonic, which is now Level 7 in Blakes of The Hollow, so our gigs back home mean a lot to us,” explains Alice. “We enjoy introducing music to the home crowd that they would not necessarily hear on a normal night out in Fermanagh.” For more information on L.A.W., visit: www.facebook.com/weareLAWdjs www.twitter.com/weareLAWdjs www.soundcloud.com/weareLAWdjs For more details on L.A.W.’s FLive appearance, visit www.flive.org.uk

HABIT When ‘bad’ habits can be good for you...
W
e all have bad habits right? Whether it be downing coffee, biting your nails or God forbid, leaving wet towels on the floor… one thing’s for sure, we’re all guilty of some sort of habitual or personality ‘flaws’. But good news, many of our mishaps needn’t always be considered a bad thing. Instead, it has been found that some of our greatest weaknesses can actually improve our health and well-being. Find enlisted 10 common ‘bad habits’ that you should embrace, nurture and discover how to make them work for you.
DAYDREAM Believer Daydreaming is commonly considered a sign of laziness or form of procrastination. However, according to the University of British Columbia, researchers have found that letting your mind wander can help boost your problem-solving abilities. In the study, it was found that when participants minds wandered, the parts of their brain associated with problem-solving became more active than when focused on routine tasks. So, while daydreaming can increase the time it takes to complete your present task, it can allow you to unconsciously sort through other important problems in your life.
#@*% You!
Ah, swearing. It’s not nice, nor is it attractive, but studies suggest that in certain situations, it might actually be good for you. In a survey conducted by the University of East Anglia, it was found that swearing at work could help employees cope with stress and maintain solidarity. Meanwhile, researchers at Keele University’s School of Psychology learnt that swearing could provide effective short-term relief from pain. However, the study also notes that swearing should be reserved for crises only, as the higher the daily swearing frequency was for participants, the less pain relief they experienced.
FIDGET Fiend
No one likes a fidgeter, it’s the bane of school teachers everywhere and the ultimate annoyance when it comes to family photographs. Yet, research suggests that fidgeting may be no bad thing – at least in us adults. In fact, fidgeting can actually burn up to 350 extra calories a day helping you keep slim and trim! Who’s laughing now?

Questionable HYGIENE Okay, so there’s nothing worse than bad hygiene. But, sometimes there’s just no time! Should you ever be tempted to skip a shower here or there, don’t fret… while you might not smell like a rose garden, you could actually be doing your health some good. Daily washing not only strips your skin of the natural oils that keep it hydrated and supple, it can also strip your skin of disease-preventing bacteria.
COVERwell-being COFFEE Overload
Too much coffee can be detrimental to your health. Fact. However, if you drink it in moderation (no more than three cups per day) and in smaller quantities, it can actually be quite good for you. Acting as a metabolism booster, caffeine can enhance exercise endurance and reduce your risk of gallstones and kidney stones. Furthermore, a study by the Harvard Medical School also found that women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day are less likely to be depressed, while separate research has shown that drinking three cups cuts risk of age-related diabetes.
ANGER Management
Ironically, anger is actually a good emotion that is often misunderstood or irrationally used. While it’s largely, and understandably considered a social faux-pas, research has found that venting your emotions can reduce the effects of stress and motivate you to take action and remedy situations that are wrong. A Swedish study also found that men who bottled up their anger when unfairly treated at work doubled their risk of having a heart attack. So, there you have it, feel free to let a little steam off once and a while, it could benefit you in the long run.
WILL-POWER Whereabouts
Keeping on track is often easier said than done. All appears to go swimmingly at first… then come the cravings. But you needn’t deny yourself. Although constantly giving into junk food cravings will totally defeat the purpose of healthy eating, allowing yourself the odd treat can actually benefit your success in the long run. Treating yourself on occasion not only boosts your happiness, but it will keep you motivated with your cravings in check.
Feeling the STRESS GOSSIP Girl
While it’s a common understanding that gossip can only cause more bad than good, it can in fact be very beneficial for our stimulus. It is thought that listening to gossip can help us bond with our peers, learn more about the people around us and release feel-good hormones - which by result relieves stress and anxiety.
From the stress in preparing for a presentation at work to when the car breaks down, sometimes the weight of the world can often feel like it’s on your shoulders. But short-term stress can actually have a positive effect, in that it can push you to get things done and succeed at them. Striking a balance is key though. While a little stress will help you fix the situation quickly, it’s also important to recharge your batteries every day so those occasional stressful moments don’t turn into a constant occurrence.
BEER Oh Dear
Move over red wine, there is a new heart-healthy beneficiary in town. When it comes to alcohol, it may come as a surprise to learn that beer can be good for you too. Rich in disease-fighting antioxidants, it also provides a dose of energyrevving iron (dark beers are a richer source than light lagers) as well as dietary silicon - a mineral that helps promote bone formation, which may improve bone density and help protect against osteoporosis. west

the pursuit of
HAPPINESS Happiness is vital to our mind, body and soul’s well-being. So, how do we obtain it? The formula is simple, we just need to stop striving to find it says Fiona Hoban

H
ow many times have you yearned for a bit of peace and quiet; a bit of time to sit and relax and yet when that time comes you struggle to embrace and enjoy it? A sense of unease, boredom or anxiety often arises within and off you go again; checking your mobile phone, flicking through brain-dead TV channels, raiding the fridge for something chocolaty (or boozy). The existential philosophers call this the existential vacuum or void – a deep inner sense of emptiness, isolation, meaninglessness and anxiety. Much of what we do with our time is an attempt to distract ourselves from this inner void or sense of lack. We do things, go places, meet people, buy stuff, wear stuff, collect stuff, and then buy more stuff. All in an attempt to fill that void; all in an attempt to find happiness because we (mistakenly) believe that finding happiness will take care of this inner lack and make us feel complete. Ask yourself, “how much of what I do truly brings me happiness?” - “how much of it is merely providing temporary relief from a feeling of inner lack?” Consumerism thrives on this existential inner lack. It takes advantage of our pursuit to fill the inner void by offering us all sorts of, well pretty much everything, as a solution. Fill the void and then you’ll be happy. Oliver James in his book The Selfish Capitalist quotes social economist Eric Fromm: “What the economy needs most of all for its own operation is that people buy, buy and buy again, since there is otherwise no constantly growing demand for goods that industry can produce and must produce to an ever-growing degree if it wants to multiply its capital. For that reason, industry compels people by all means of temptation to consume more.” And whilst most of us acknowledge that a particular brand of tights or shampoo cannot deliver happiness, we consume them as if they could. Oliver James goes on to say: “Materialistic psychology is driven by a desire for extrinsic rewards and praise nurtured in materialists by parents and wider social forces. These are eventually ‘introjected’, taken to be part of oneself, creating guilt or anxiety if disobeyed, and experienced as an instruction to conform – compulsively so.” In that sense, happiness in Western consumerist cultures is often seen as something that must be pursued and attained. (I’ll be happy when I lose 10lbs; I’ll be happy when I get a good job; I’ll be happy when I meet my soul-mate). One way or another, happiness is seen as the end result; it is dependent on something external and is invariably something that will happen in the future. And when we do lose that 10lbs or get that good job or find our soul-mate, this indeed delivers a sort of happiness. A sort that, if we’re honest, is ultimately short-lived. It’s not long before we return again to a sense of lack; a return to our seemingly endless search for happiness. As U2 sang back in the 1980s... “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” So what’s the answer? Is it that old cliché that true happiness comes from within? Not necessarily. This too can be misleading because it assumes that happiness can be found somewhere, albeit from an inner source. This merely shifts our search from an outer one to an inner one. But it’s still a search! Spiritualism claims that there is no source of happiness (either inner or outer) and therefore any search is ultimately futile. True happiness simply exists and is unconditional; it is achieved when we go beyond the selforientation and possessiveness of the mind; when we enter

the direct experience for ourselves and the Universe; when we have the perception that we are the Universe. An important part of tapping into this unconditional happiness is letting go of an expectation of finding happiness. It is often said that the main thing that blocks us from experiencing unconditional happiness is our relentless pursuit of it. Did you ever go to a party with zero expectations? You’re not expecting it to be a good night; you’re not expecting to meet your soul mate. You’re just open to going with the flow. Isn’t it true that those nights are often the best nights? It’s one of life’s paradoxes: the minute you let go of your expectation of something, that’s the time it’s manifested. Letting go of an expectation to be happy, ironically, brings its own happiness. Some would say then that the key to happiness is to stop wasting time searching for happiness. If we are no longer to search for happiness, what do we do with ourselves? We simply feel all that comes our way and decide to express happiness through whatever activity or relationship we’re experiencing in this moment. We use relationships and possessions to express our happiness, rather than depend on them to find our happiness. In that sense, happiness must ensue and not be pursued. Think about it: if you decided to stop searching for happiness, if you decided to give up any expectation of finding happiness in what you do, in the relationships you have etc.; if you made your peace with that sense of inner lack and stopped masking it with various activities and acquisitions – wouldn’t all this bring about a state of inner calm and peace? And from this inner calm and peace springs a happiness that is not dependent on any internal or external condition; this is called love.

THE EXTRA SHOT
Flying the ball low into the wind
Lynn is the Director of Golf and Head Professional at the Faldo Academy, Lough Erne Resort, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh lougherneresort.com
by Lynn McCool
A
s we embark on the autumn months, controlling the ball in the wind is essential when playing the Irish courses. In preparation, it is important to know what shot to play to keep the ball in position on the course when there are winds as high as 20/30/40mph. First of all you have to ask yourself how far is the ball from the pin and then you have to determine how much influence the wind will play on the yardage. If you can manage to keep the ball flying low then this is a good shot to play as the ball will drive through the wind and keep on line as opposed to drifting off in the direction of the wind if flying at a high trajectory. Try to gauge how many yards the wind would add on to the yardage. You might find that you may need to select 2 clubs more than your normal selection to counteract for the wind.
Throw some grass in the air to help you determine the strength of the wind
Simple rules to ensure you drive the ball low into the wind:
58
west
* *
Begin with the set up.
*
Position the hands opposite the inside of the left thigh. This will leave the hands well in front of the ball which helps deloft the clubface during the strike. This will promote the low ball flight.
The ball position needs to be back in the stance. For right handed players, this means favouring the right side.
*
*
Due to the set up, the backswing and follow through will feel very restricted in terms of how far back and through you can go. The feeling will consist of 3/4 length back-swing and 3/4 finish.
*
Good extension of the arms on the through swing will ensure the ball drives out through the wind in the right direction. This is also a great shot to play when looking to fly the ball low under trees!
Hold down the handle at address. With the ball being so far back in the stance, this helps promote a clean strike through impact.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Recipes by award-winning chef Neven Maguire taken from his new recipe book, ‘Neven’s Country Living’ available now in all good book stores or through www.nevenmaguire.com
Serves 4-6
Leek and Potato Soup with Smoked Bacon Ingredients:
• 2oz/50g butter • 1lb/450g leeks, trimmed and roughly chopped • 8 rindless smoked streaky bacon rashers • 1 onion, roughly chopped (about 8oz/225g in total) • 1 potato, cut into cubes (about 8oz/225g in total) • 1oz/25g plain flour • 3 pints/1.75 litres chicken stock • 7fl oz/200ml cream • 12 fresh basil leaves, plus extra to garnish • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method:
• Preheat the grill to medium. • Cut four of the bacon rashers in half and arrange on the grill rack. Cook for three to four minutes on each side until crisp and golden. • Transfer to a plate and set aside to use as a garnish. • Dice the remaining four rashers. • Melt the butter in a large pan and gently fry the diced bacon with the leeks and onion over a low heat for about five minutes until softened but not coloured. • Add the potato, stirring well to combine and then cook for another two minutes, stirring.
60
west
• Gradually add the stock, stirring to prevent any lumps forming. • Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are completely tender, stirring occasionally. • Add ¼ pint/150ml of the cream to the soup and simmer for another five minutes, stirring occasionally. • Add the basil and season to taste. • Remove from the heat and reserve a large spoonful of potato cubes to use as garnish. • Purée the soup in batches in a food processor or liquidiser until smooth, then pour back into a clean pan; or use a handheld blender leaving the soup in the pan. Season to taste and reheat gently. • Place the remaining 2 floz/50ml of cream in a bowl and lightly whip.
Serve:
• Divide the reserved hot potato cubes between warmed serving bowls. Ladle over the soup and drizzle the whipped cream on top. Garnish with the crispy bacon rashers and some basil leaves to serve. • Toss into the dressing with any roasting juices, the scallions, olives and basil. Season to taste. • Arrange on a large platter or individual serving plates. • Crumble the feta over and serve at once with crusty bread.
Pumpkin and Basil Macaroni Ingredients:
• 300g (11oz) cherry tomatoes on the vine • 300g pumpkin, peel and diced • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 1 tbsp olive oil • 350g (12oz) macaroni pasta • 250g (9oz) tub mascarpone cheese • 2 tsp Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp fresh basil, shredded • 200g (7oz) parmesan, freshly grated • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Serves 4
Method:
• Preheat oven 220°C/450°F/Gas 7. Carefully remove the cherry tomatoes from the vine and place in an ovenproof dish alongside the diced pumpkin. • Sprinkle with half the garlic and drizzle over the olive oil. Season to taste. • Roast for 15 minutes until the tomatoes have softened slightly and skins have started to split, tossing once or twice to ensure even cooking. Meanwhile, cook the macaroni in a large pan of boiling salted water for eight to 10 minutes, or according to packet instructions until al dente (tender but firm to the bite). • Place the mascarpone in a bowl and beat in the mustard, basil, parmesan and the remaining garlic. • Drain the pasta and return to the pan.
• Stir in the mascarpone cheese mixture, then carefully fold in the roasted cherry tomatoes and pumpkin. • Tip into the ovenproof dish that you used for the tomatoes. Bake for 20 minutes, until bubbling and golden brown. • To serve, leave the cheese, tomato and basil macaroni to stand for a few minutes, then serve straight from the dish onto warmed plates.
Chicken Casserole with Sweet Potatoes Serves 6-8
Ingredients:
• 12 rindless streaky bacon rashers • 12 skinless and boneless chicken thighs • 3 tbsp rapeseed oil • 2 onions, cut into wedges • 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes (preferably orange-fleshed) • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly • 120ml (4fl oz) red wine • 450ml (3/4 pint) chicken stock • 1 tbsp chopped, fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1 tbsp toasted flaked almonds • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Mashed potatoes, to serve
Method:
• Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas mark 6. Stretch each rasher with the back of a table knife and then use to wrap around a chicken thigh. • Heat the oil in a large casserole with a lid and cook the wrapped chicken thighs in batches until lightly browned all over. Arrange on a plate and set aside. Reduce the heat, then add the onions and sweet potatoes, then sauté for five minutes until golden. • Add the garlic and cook for one minute, stirring to prevent the mixture sticking. Add the redcurrant jelly and then pour in red wine and stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and return the chicken to the casserole. Cover and cook for one hour or until the chicken is completely tender and the sauce has thickened slightly. Season to taste. • To serve, sprinkle the casserole with the parsley and flaked almonds, then place directly on the table with a large bowl of mash to mop up all those delicious juices. west

Having just returned from a visit to New York, Gordon Annan provides an insight into all aspects design – New York style
NEW YORK
THE BUZZ
Whilst the very name New York conjures up images of a busy city vibrant with many cultures amidst dense vehicle and pedestrian traffic, the physical layout of Manhattan (one of 5 boroughs) is a design grid itself that not only makes navigation easy but also speaks a logic commensurate with the straight-talking New Yorkers. All but the southern tip of the 13 mile long, 4 mile wide island (they’re still in miles, feet and inches there!) has avenues running north to south intersected by west to east streets from 2nd Street up to 228th Street meaning to the tourist like me that a hotel, restaurant or shop is then found using the intersecting locations such as Lexington Avenue, East 34th Street and so on.
The Background
Milan might be the capital of style but the scale, vibrancy and commercial activity level of New York makes it a big attraction to the world’s top design houses in interior design as it does fashion. New York cannot be accused of jumping onto the design bandwagon in recent years since such places as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the New York Design Centre prove that for approaching a century the city has locations of design excellence. The New York Design Centre located at 200 Lexington Avenue is a 16 storey, 50,000 sq.ft building operating as a resource centre for all aspects of interior design including furniture, lighting and fabrics. It actually originated as the New York furniture exchange 80 years ago. Needless to say, interested visitors need to allow more than half an hour to investigate it in any meaningful way.

MoMA
The Museum of Modern Art or MoMA as it is marketed as (and they really know how to market themselves) is in my opinion the world’s most significant measuring stick for the rating of iconic design pieces, be they industrial (everyday objects) furniture or lighting. Getting exhibited there even on a temporary basis let alone in the permanent collection can catapult a manufacturer or designer into global marketing success in an instant. I became aware of this in the early years of my design career when I began to note various design items and furniture listed as being exhibited in MoMA on their respective trade literature. During my first visit to New York in 1992 when I was young and fit I ran the NYC Marathon and I also took the opportunity to visit MoMA. Twenty years on, I was only too keen to pay it a return visit and have time to take it all in. It’s a reminder the birthplace of ‘Modern’ design actually has its origins at the start of the 20th century when art movements led into pioneers of architecture, furniture and interior design such as the Bauhaus. Industrial design is the broad term given to things which are manufactured – mostly household items and things we might use at work – so the collection includes shavers, calculators, desk lamps and tableware as well as the more obvious furniture and lighting. All of these things currently exhibited or exhibited in the past have the common thread of being significantly innovative or excelling in design at the time of their release onto the market. For example, the Danish designer Arne Jacobsen’s chair of 1955 which first demonstrated the use of steam-bent plywood was the most significant breakthrough

The High Line
in chair design since the invention of the Bentwood chair by Thonet in 1870. This has been borne out by the millions of look-alikes still produced throughout the world today. It’s in the foreground here of the photo below showing many significant furniture pieces which to be fair could be mistaken for new releases in 2012 such is their timeless quality.
The High Line Zoo
The High line
Iconic furniture classics on display at the MoMA Just to commercially capitalise on your ‘design high’, whilst there a design shop within MoMA almost prevents you from leaving without a memento of your visit from a $3 ballpen to an expensive reference book. Frankly I could spend a full day in the place.
Another attraction for design buffs in the city is the High Line. On the west side of Manhattan, this is quite simply creative conversion of what was a high level urban rail structure into a pedestrian walkway which has been beautifully landscaped with planting and seating. I do recall American movies which had aluminium train carriages going at speed past apartment blocks at roughly 1st floor level or gangster chases through the underside support structures but never thought I would experience such practical built-environment recycling first hand. The photos above not only show that unique experience of walking in the city but not on the street pavements (sorry sidewalks) but almost in another environment altogether yet having an usually good view on all things city. Many residents and office buildings have actually rejoiced in their very close proximity by offering up to High Line pedestrians all sorts of art including, as an example here, the High Line Zoo! Creative planting and very modern wood and stainless steel seating make this a very nice city walk indeed.

Designer Furnishing Showrooms – of course!
Lazzoni
Apple in the Big Apple
Domus Design Centre
Well it’s obvious the big design brands wouldn’t miss out on having flagship stores in this most famous metropolis and arguably their role has become even more critical since the USA furnishing and design industry has been hit equally as hard as UK and Ireland when it comes to the recession. Many of those around the Madison Ave/West 18th Street area are certainly showing a brave (and clean and tidy) face and welcomed me as the harmless tourist taking photographs. The long established Jensen Lewis is in some ways the Heals of London showing modern design from the mid to upper quality level. The Ubiquitous Bo Concept showroom was neighbouring the very interesting Lazzoni at 154 West 18th Street. This Turkish company who have cleverly used the Italian name, Lazzoni, had no problems presenting a high-end ambience as shown in the first photo on the right and quality upon inspection seemed good. The Domus Design Centre (middle right) on Madison Avenue really had the wow factor though not just because it showed the prestigious Interlubke and Cor products (also available in Annan Interiors, Enniskillen) from Germany, but because they have the most tremendous interior space with mezzanines and doubleheight spaces cleverly secluded then revealed by angular walls yet all flowing in a seductive experience. Amongst the items on display was the new Cor Bahir sofa – for slouching with your iPad and Jalis dining chairs accompanied the retro-looking Shrimp swivel chairs. The very tall Interlubke Studimo shelving shown here is warmed up by rugs in an opulent living room setting. We’ve just witnessed the 2012 Olympics – hailed as the games of social media where iPads and iPhones not only were the higher profile devices which transmitted the historic moments but captured photographically the more obscure opportunistic images of a global event. So it’s hard to avoid all this iPadding/iPhoningwhizz bang slick graphics/media thing and the NY Apple store has to be one of the epicentres for it all. The design of the store, both architecture and interior is worth seeing (though Ireland’s only Apple store in Victoria Square, Belfast, has too got cool maple tables, glass stairs and colourcoded polo-shirt clad smiling assistants!) but it’s the glass lift and staircase combined which goes from street level down which takes the biscuit as a dramatic entrance to NYC’s 24 –hour Apple store. Furniture design itself has now given in to the new media onslaught – spearheaded by Apple with storage units firstly for TV and latterly for audio/internet now shallower in depth with integral charging locations etc. All very well and good but as long as our media preoccupation doesn’t steal our time used for appreciating the basics of design in touch and feel and perhaps most important of all our face-to-face personal communication with our fellow man (and woman). “Have a nice day!” GORDON ANNAN – Annan Interiors Ltd As Principal of Annan Interiors Ltd, Gordon Annan has many years’ experience working as an interior designer since graduating from Belfast College of Art & Design. His flair for a very purist design attracts clients from all over Ireland and the Annan Interiors showroom in Enniskillen is a real appetite whetter for those inspired by good design. The clarity and strength of his work is at its best in the modern home, punctuated with his very established contacts with Europe’s top designer brands. Restore old furniture by adding bright modern fabrics to create a look that is on trend and vibrant. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns; by keeping the cushion and seat cover in the same colour palette, the mix of patterns works well on this chair.
The use of fabric in this room on the curtains adds the luxurious drama needed to create the sense of splendor in what is a cottage bedroom. The vibrant orange colour sits perfectly against the green of the doors and texture of the stone floor.
If you want to add a creative take to your home or a personal touch, why not take inspiration from Fleur and paint place settings directly onto your table. This individual take adds interest, personality and drama to a room with little expenditure.

The hub of the cottage is the kitchen, with its traditional wood burner and light fitting. Warmth has been created in this room by the use of fabrics and accompaniment of a chair by the fire. By using a beautiful table setting purchased at auction, the table is an inviting space.

The showstopper of this home is the French antique bed, which is displayed in all its glory in the master bedroom. This look is a display of the talent of interior designer Fleur to use reclaimed furniture in her home. She purchased this bed direct from France via Ebay for ÂŁ100 and had it shipped over.

IMAGE 1: Dining Room The use of a built-in bookcase in the dinning room helps to add interest to a small space and create the sense of height in what is a low ceiling room. The waves in the design of the bookcase, is a perfect mix of contemporary design in what is generally a traditional room.
IMAGE 2: Living Room Key to the look of the cottage was the marriage of old and new. By displaying antiques and mixing them with modern furnishings, they were able to stay true to the cottage’s history while providing modern comforts. The old fireplace surround is the dominating feature in this room.

T
he new Toyota GT86 has succeeded in recapturing the essential joy of driving. More attractive still is the fact that its great performance does not come with a hefty price tag as expected, but starts at £24,995 for the manual version, with the automatic at £26,495, and seven exterior colours to choose from. With a front-mounted 2.0-litre “boxer” engine and rear wheel drive, the light, low and nimble GT86 has a classic sports car set-up. The styling and specification reflect its driver-focused character with its exterior features including a rear spoiler, 17inch light alloy wheels, chrome-finished dual exhaust tailpipes and a signature “T”-mesh grille. Other features include bi-xenon high intensity discharge headlights, LED daytime running lights, front fog lamps and electric folding door mirrors with housings matched to the car’s body colour. As for the GT86 badge, it is a small but attractive detail just forward of the base of the A-pillars, depicting four drifting tyres within the number 86, set between two horizontal “boxer” pistons. The 2+2 cabin further emphasises the essential character of the GT86, with a cockpit designed around the driver, front sports seats, aluminium pedals and contrasting red stitching around the black leather trimmed steering wheel, gear knob and parking brake. Black cloth upholstery is standard, but customers have a couple of interior options to choose from.
Access is easy thanks to the Smart Entry system, and the cabin can be programmed for comfort with dual-zone air conditioning. The high quality extends to an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control, hill-start assist, scuff plates and the Toyota Touch touchscreen control system for controlling the six-speaker audio system, with Bluetooth for phone connection and music streaming, and a USB port. As an option, the system can be upgraded to Toyota Touch and Go. Active safety provisions include a switchable VSC stability control system, which can be adjusted through three driving modes to suit driver preference, and a torque-sensing limited slip differential. Furthermore, the six-speed automatic transmission available for GT86s includes paddle shifts to give the driver the option of making manual gear changes. It is without question that the Toyota GT86 is the car designed and priced to delight. Western Cars, Sligo Road, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh T: +44 (0)28 6632 4323

f you are looking for a second hand car in Fermanagh, there is now another site for you to visit. Enniskillen Car Centre has just opened on the Sligo Road next to Western Cars Toyota and offers a great selection of cars at very affordable prices. “Recently we have found a trend with people looking for a more affordable car” said Patrick Mc Caffrey, owner of the Enniskillen Car Centre and Western Cars which is located next door to the Toyota Centre. “We often see people visiting Western Cars looking for a used car on a certain budget and perhaps at

that time we didn’t have anything to suit them. We decided to make use of the site which used to be a Spar shop and filling station and open Enniskillen Car Centre enabling us to sell a different range of cars that we did not stock normally.” Priding themselves on finding customers just what they’re looking for - thanks to great access to trade-only websites, other franchise sites and of course, the well established Toyota Network - the Enniskillen Car Centre has its own separate sales office which is being looked after by Sales Executive, Malcolm Weir. This is another branch of Western Cars, which has been established for over 20 years, in which they have built up a good database of satisfied customers. It wil still offer finance, insurance and warranties on-site and will always have a good selection of all makes of cars available. Some of the vehicles will be trade-ins from Western Cars which were previously sold on in the motor trade, but can now be offered to customers at very keen prices. Whatever your needs, the Enniskillen Car Centre has something to suit everyone’s taste and pocket, with cars starting from as little as £25 per week.
