LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Covington Latin School
As I begin my third year humbly serving the Covington Latin School community, I am honored to see the qualities of goodness, discipline, and knowledge resonate through our students and graduates, no matter what has changed in this building. In this edition of The Leader, you will see the success of our graduates as they take their education to the next level as well as the generosity of so many who directly contribute to the success of all our students.
This summer I had the honor to be part of the reunions of the classes of 1962 and 2007. The Mass in our Chapel for the Class of 1962 was my first Mass in our school’s chapel, and Father Twadell, Class of 1959, mentioned how prayer can change so much. A few weeks later, Fr. Brockmeier of the Class of 2007 said Mass for his classmates in our chapel, and as the Mass ended, the Class of 2007 was in no hurry to leave the chapel. I felt then that I would spend time each day in prayer in this special place to pray for all our students, families, alumni, and friends of Covington Latin School. The prayers of our community have sustained me through my time here and brought health to my family, so I am thankful to be part of such a place where goodness, discipline, and knowledge still resonate in each day of grace.
I want to take a moment to thank those listed on our pages for your generosity. We have established scholarships in honor of those who helped build this institution, and I can see how your choice to make Covington Latin School a giving priority directly benefits this new generation of students who otherwise would not be able to afford a Covington Latin School education. Your investment will not only pay dividends for these students, but for society at large. Thank you.
I look forward to seeing more of our alumni as we prepare for the celebration of our centennial. I am honored to join this community and am humbled to serve our families in educating for the future. Dr.
John P. Kennedy Headmaster

The graduating class of 2022 was an impressively talented group of individuals. Among them were National Merit Finalists and Semifinalists, talented athletes, and incredible vocalists. The first child of an alumna graduated in 2022. These graduates demonstrated their intellect and leadership daily at CLS, and we know they will continue to hone the skills they acquired while at Latin School.

FACULTY AWARD WINNER
Brady Boyer
Covington Latin School is proud to announce that Brady Boyer was this year’s recipient of the Faculty Award. For those unable to attend graduation, Brady reflected eloquently on his time at Covington Latin School.
His speech is as follows:
elcome to his Excellency Bishop Iffert, Father Maher, Father Hainsey, Mrs. McGuire, Dr. Kennedy, Faculty, Honored Guests, Parents, and my fellow classmates of the Covington Latin School class of 2022.
My dear classmates, can you feel it? Can you feel the anxiety, the excitement, the anticipation this moment deserves? In a matter of minutes, we will become not students but graduates of Covington Latin School. Let’s cherish these few minutes and embrace them with all we have; we’ve made it.
I’m honored to stand before you today, privileged with the ability to speak to you all about gardening. Yes, gardening. Before I do so, let me be clear: I do NOT have a green thumb… I’ve embarrassingly let a cactus die from underwatering it. As such, I hope not to speak of my own horror stories, but of the positive ones reported in the Bible-- tales of mustard seeds, vines, and other vegetation which did not die from a lack of water. These stories are of infinitely greater value than my own; as we dig into the root of these stories, we can find rich lessons easily applicable to our lives.
Let’s all think like botanists for a moment. Let me ask you: what are the necessary components of a garden? There are, of course, many specific things that may be helpful to you in your garden, but, most generally, you need three things: a gardener, a garden, and plants. These plants, of course, have needs independent of the garden’s water, sunlight, and food. Three things that are awfully similar to what humans need, right? Let’s discover these similarities a bit.
I see it best that we start from the ground up. Literally, let’s start with the soil. The Parable of the Sower teaches us a good lesson on soil: plants do not grow on a field of weeds, a rocky path, and among thorns. In fact, the most fruitful plants are cultivated on good soil, a category of which we, the class of 2022, are blessed to be a part. Covington Latin has blessed and equipped us with unique resources that have empowered us to be prepared as we are; it’s why we are a class with a breadth of accomplishments to be proud of today. Combined, we represent over 2,900 hours of community service-- well over 120 days.
Our accomplishments are not just represented by our volunteer work; we are the culmination of hours and hours of academic work, being Covington Latin students and all.
W 8 www.CovingtonLatin.org The Leader Fall 2022
“
According to my calculations, that number stands well over 55,000 hours or about 2,500 days. Parents and faculty, thank you for your tireless efforts to support our studies in and out of the classroom, even if you were the ones to give us the work in the first place. You have made us a more compassionate, enthusiastic, and vibrant class, giving us a seed-size piece of your goodness, discipline, and knowledge. It’s clear to see your influence on our growth in character and virtue; these virtues speak to a verse from Luke Chapter 8, which reads, “As for that in the good soil, they are who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.”
Moving on to the plant itself, let me ask you something about growth. How do you tell if a plant is growing or not? Can you tell every time? Unless you have a thumb so green, it shoots a sprout, which is obviously not me, plant growth is not always apparent. At Covington Latin, our growth has been seen both inwardly and outwardly by everyone we’ve touched these past years. Though we can all attest to the clear dominance Calah has on the volleyball court and A’nika on both the baseball and softball fields, we can’t quite clearly see the fortitude that Jay gained from his Computer Programming class, or the strength of the AP Latin students who toiled their way bravely through four trying years filled with too many vocabulary words for the rest of us to handle. This is not even to mention the number of you heading out to study the most advanced of the engineering pathways; I’ll tell you what, you are courageous. I’ll stick to urban studies. To all of us, though, stay assured there is a path for our growth, a plan God has in store for us. Recall Genesis 1:12, which states, “The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.”
Friends, our lives are only beginning. We are but small sprouts under the supervision of a master gardener. I cannot thank each and every one of you enough for every moment spent with you, from the excitement of ancient
and medieval days to this very moment, where, hopefully, you can’t see the trepidation of my fingertips behind this podium. Thank you for being vulnerable, for being real with each other, for those times in which we just couldn’t stand one another; true friendship is never serene and quaint, and it’s pushed us to become closer as a class. Additionally, I have to sincerely thank Dr.
-Brady Boyer
this class’s identity; I know no better, no more supportive group of mentors to ask for. It’s certainly rare for any group of teachers to put up with our games of Poker/Bingo and runs to Walgreens, a few memories of many we’ll hold dear to our hearts. To our parents, thank you for your investment in us; thank you for managing the carpool, driving us to practice, supporting us, or even not supporting us when we needed to not be supported. You are the reason we’re here; you have enabled our growth as metaphorical plants. In just mere minutes, classmates, we will be Covington Latin graduates.
“
Covington Latin has blessed and equipped us with unique resources that have empowered us to be prepared as we are; it’s why we are a class with a breadth of accomplishments to be proud of today. “

And soon, we’ll hug and cry, sign shirts, and take photos together. We’ll do our best to stay in touch. But we’ll be living our lives, doing our best, and discovering new paths. Take with you from this ceremony a fiery optimism and love for the times we’ve cherished together; see only the best in the future you’ve created for yourself. I think that Henri Matisse, an esteemed French expressionist painter, said it best: “There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” I encourage you all to look at the classmate to the left and to the right; hopefully, you will also dare to have the courage to see the blooming flowers before you. Thank you so much. I’m so proud of you all.”

Covington Latin School welcomed 206 students on campus this fall. They were enthusiastically greeted by faculty and staff with a tremendous amount of teaching experience and educational backgrounds that include Ph. D.s in education and science and Master’s degrees in their fields of studies from history to fine arts. As part of our commitment to the strategic plan, Covington Latin School has aligned our curriculum to emphasize a classical curriculum that will allow our students to enter the workforce with the critical thinking skills necessary for success. Our classical curriculum includes a strong foundation in liberal arts classes. Public speaking is now incorporated into all grade levels. Students in Prep and Form I years take speech through their history
classes and then move into formal speech classes in Form II-IV years. Foreign language study is still a key component of our classical education. Students have the opportunity to take up to four years of Latin and Greek. Students also have the opportunity to take German and other languages such as Japanese, Spanish, and French.
One of the most significant additions to our school this year is our addition of a Learning Support Services program. Dr. Shannon Bosley has joined the team to help create a formalized plan to give our neurodiverse or twice-exceptional students the tools they need to succeed at CLS. Dr. Bosley is a parent of Lexi Bosley Knauer ‘14 and appreciates the importance of a Latin School education.

James Dressman
Covington Latin School is blessed with many legacy families. These families believe in the mission of Covington Latin School so much that they have sent two or more generations of children to CLS. The Dressman family is just one example that spans three generations. This family’s legacy began with James Dressman Jr. James was born in 1922, was the oldest of nine children, and grew up in Latonia, Kentucky. At age 11, James left home and moved in with his aunt to be closer to Covington Latin School. As did many of James’s classmates, he entered the seminary, but he left after a year and a half. Still wanting to serve his community, he believed entering law would be the next best thing to serving as a priest. He began his study of law at Xavier University. However, World War II broke out, and he had to halt his studies. He served in the Merchant Marines and was shipped to the European and Pacific Theaters.
Upon his return home from the war, James continued his study of law. During this time, he married his sweetheart, Theresa Martin Boone. This union was blessed with 12 children, many of whom attended Covington Latin School.
James entered politics as a state representative of Kentucky in 1952 and served four years and earned the distinction of being the youngest state representative to be elected. He then became Master Commissioner of the Kenton County Circuit Court. In 1962, he made a successful run for Judge Executive. While this was meant only to be a part-time job, Judge Dressman’s servant leadership and commitment to his community had him working tirelessly for the citizens of Northern Kentucky. Under his watch, Judge Dressman created a Probate Court form system, improved the county roads system, created the Kenton County park system, developed the Kenton County Golf Course, instituted the Kenton County Health District that bears his name, created the Sanitation District, built the courthouse in Covington, and created the Women’s Crisis Center. He worked with fellow Judge Executives in the region to consolidate services and helped develop the region by purchasing land for the Greater Cincinnati International Airport.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
22 www.CovingtonLatin.org The Leader Fall 2022
While his law practice and political position were important to him, his priority was, first and foremost, his family. Two of his children, Jim and Mary Sue, shared that their father made them their priority making it home for dinner each night. To James and Theresa, Catholic education was a priority, and they worked hard to send them all to Catholic schools. Honoring this commitment, the Dressman family has established The Judge James A. Dressman and Theresa Dressman Memorial Scholarship for all students wishing a Covington Latin School education.
Politically, Judge Dressman was quite progressive. The first African American Judge Pro Temp, John Delaney, served under him. He was the district campaign manager for John Kennedy and was asked to run for Kentucky State Senate. He declined because he felt he could not rise any higher in politics without losing his integrity.

We are honored by his service in US Air Force as a surgeon, where he served in the medical corps during Vietnam. After he completed a Urology residency before founding Urology Specialists in Arizona. He now lives in California, where the recent pandemic allowed him time to dive into the Dialogue of Saint Catherine of Siena and write his book: God’s Pearls: Love and Life.
1980’s
In March, Michael Daugherty ‘80 was appointed mayor of Crescent Springs, Kentucky.
1990’s

Bryson E. Wilson ‘03 enlisted in 2007 into the US Navy as a Nuclear Machinists’ Mate. He became an Engineering Laboratory Technician who primarily dealt with water chemistry for radioactive and nonradioactive waters and any radiological controls onboard the submarine. He was selected for an enlisted commissioning program and attended Auburn University, where he finished his undergrad
and was commissioned as a submarine officer in 2015. He spent the next few years on two different submarines, the USS MARYLAND out of Kings Bay, Georgia, and the USS SAN FRANCISCO, NNSY, Portsmouth, Virginia. During this period, he served as the Chemistry and Radiological Controls assistant and qualified as a Navy Nuclear Engineer. He spent much of his time onboard the San Fran building and executing training and qualifications programs for their engineering department and conducting a major engineering overhaul for the San Francisco project. He is now back in Covington, Kentucky. He is still on Active Duty Navy and is now the Cincinnati area Navy Nuclear Engineering Officer programs director. Bryson is also attending Miami University as an MBA candidate. He’ll likely finish his Navy adventure in 2023, 15 years after it started! He now lives in Wallace Woods and gets to see good old CLS grown up every day he drives home from work!

In May, Shannon did a three-week Voices of the River source-tosea expedition where she through-paddled the Haw and Cape Fear Rivers in North Carolina, learning about the ecosystems and meeting the people who protect the river basin while earning biology credits. Shannon will be immersing herself in the field this coming year. The WLEE immersion program includes 35 overnights in the field and a 21-day student-led expedition next May. She will take leadership, group dynamics, and wilderness medicine classes and become a certified wilderness first responder and Leave No Trace instructor. This summer, she worked at Camp Ernst as a cabin counselor, where they have nicknamed her “Ranger”.
Zane Hermes ‘22 worked at The Hive Restaurant and Cafe in Erlanger this summer. He will start his first year of college at the University of Louisville in the College of Business.

TIME TO CELEBRATE
Reunions Are Back!
We were thrilled to host the class of 1962, 2002, 2007, and 2017 back on campus this summer. It was so fun to show them around. Some alums had not yet seen the Eva Farris Science Wing and the Kohlhepp Family Forum, and very few had seen the newly transformed library. Everyone was excited to see the changes to the building since they had been here last. What hadn’t changed was a highlight for many - the chapel. We were blessed to have Fr. Twadell ‘59 and Fr. James Brockmeier ‘07 celebrate Mass with the Class of 1962 and 2007. We are currently scheduling reunions for graduating classes that end in three and eight. It is our honor to host you on campus or help plan your reunion off campus. Let us know what we can do to help by contacting us at advancement@covingtonlatin.org

CENTENNIAL Celebration
n the fall of 1923, Bishop Howard founded Covington Latin School as an alternative to traditional high school for bright young men to accelerate their education so that they could enter college and the workforce early. Ninety-nine years later, over 3000 young men and women have the distinction of earning a diploma from Covington Latin School. Covington Latin School will start celebrating our centennial in May of 2023. This year-long celebration will highlight our outstanding institution.
CLS seeks individuals who would like to participate in planning this momentous event. If you are interested, please contact Amy Darpel at amy.darpel@covingtonlatin.org.
Our centennial celebration will kick off graduation weekend with a personalized yard sign. Join our newest graduates in decorating your yard with a sign with your graduation year on it. Scavenger hunts will go on throughout the year to find the earliest graduate, the farthest graduate, and the most yard signs found.
Place your order for your yard sign at www.covingtonlatin.org/alumni/centennial/

WHO WAS CLIFFORD KOHLHEPP?

To honor his love of CLS, his six sons, Bill ‘57, Bob ‘59, Jerry ‘62, Tom ‘66, Jim CCH ‘69, Joe CCH ‘72, and grandson, Gary ‘83, have established a $2.5 million Clifford E. The Kohlhepp Family will match dollar for dollar all gifts made to the fund in hopes of raising $5,000,000 for the school. Additionally, all unrestricted contributions to the Academic Advancement Fund raised more than $200,000 will be matched each fiscal year. The Clifford E. Kohlhepp Covington Latin Endowment Fund’s intent is to provide tuition assistance for deserving students and support school initiatives.
WHEN DOES THE MATCH START?

Covington Latin School needs your help to make this transformational gift a reality. You can make an impact by donating directly to the Clifford E. Kohlhepp Covington Latin School Endowment Fund, and each donation will be matched dollar for dollar. All gifts made to the AAF will be matched once a $200,000 threshold is reached each fiscal year. A MESSAGE
FROM
THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT
The fall edition of the The Leader is my favorite. It is a celebration of our graduates’ many accomplishments and the start for our new students whose graduation is far on the horizon. Opportunities abound for both our graduates and our new students.
As our graduates start their college experience, they realize how Covington Latin School prepared them to think critically and know how to be academically successful. They realize how hard work and determination allowed them to attend college for little money. They realize that the leadership skills they learned at CLS have prepared them to make the most of their college experience. These revelations of what a Latin School education gave them are second to none. As they embark on this new chapter of their lives, we pray they succeed in everything they do.
For our current students, Covington Latin School offers endless opportunities. At our orientation each year, I am reminded of what a special place Latin School truly is. Our students make fast friends because, for maybe the first time, these students are with like-minded students who love to learn. They are inquisitive and challenge each other to make the most of each learning opportunity. As I walk the halls, I feel the excitement and electricity in the air.
This year marks the 99th year of educating bright individuals. As we plan our centennial, there is much to celebrate and be thankful. Our strategic plan will guide everything we do for the next century. We are committed to providing the same classical education that has been a part of Latin School since its inception. But as more is learned in the field of gifted education, we are incorporating best practices that will support all who would benefit from a Covington Latin School education. We hope you are as excited as we are and will join us in our preparations.
