LATIN SCHOOL WINS TOP AWARDS // CLASS OF ‘81 REUNION // BACK TO SCHOOL // DONOR HONOR ROLL
A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Covington Latin School Families, Alumni, and Friends, While the restrictions on human interactions still exist, which dictate a slower return to normal instruction, Covington Latin School students emerged from their computer screens to enjoy a fairly normal graduation, the start of school, and return to classrooms and sports fields both last year and now. Some of the events highlighted in this edition of The Leader look like the events of other years: First day of school, Olympic Day in October, reunions, and people interacting with parents, students, teachers, and administrators again after a long time in isolation. So while we still pray for all those sick or anxious, we also can celebrate so many accomplishments. The Class of 1981 returned to campus in June, and I enjoyed meeting many of them as well as hearing stories from a different, but similar time at CLS. The weekend festivities did not end when the classmates returned home--- the class donated a generous gift for the renovation of the “old” library into a new, modern collaborative space for our students. Thanks also to the Drees and Jones families who generously provided a lead gift to move this dream into reality. Look for this addition to our learning environment in December. The Class of 2021 will be remembered as my first graduating class as headmaster of CLS, and they represent all that is great about a Covington Latin School education: they are smart, kind, savvy, and, yes, young in age and wise in spirit. The return on investment this class received from many outstanding universities again proves that providing bright, motivated students a challenge will open doors and avenues of success. Good luck, Class of 2021. We miss you! Finally, we end our annual report with a public thank you to all of you who so generously gave time, treasure, and talent to ensure we have the best programs for our students and the best faculty. Our annual appeal fund clearly allows us to do much more in so many areas, so thank you again to those who recognize Covington Latin School as a primary giving target. We also witnessed the awarding of scholarships by the benefactors who know what the value of a Covington Latin education is for students who otherwise would not be able to afford this gift. Thank you all. I look forward to our continued growth in many areas as we partner with you to ensure the future will be bright with Covington Latin School graduates: an investment for the community and country. The continued advancement of our beloved school grants our students the love of learning and true academic, spiritual, and interpersonal success. We are proud to have a community that represents our school in many facets as we return to normal. Again, thank you for your continued support of Covington Latin and its students. Have a blessed year!

Latin School Takes Multiple Top Awards
#1
It has been quite a year for Covington Latin School. CLS was designated as one of the Best Workplaces in Northern Kentucky by NKY Magazine, listed as the Best Private School in the Greater Cincinnati Region by Cincinnati Family Choice Awards, named the Most Caring Catholic School in the LUXlife Private Education Awards, and received Best School Spirit from Northern Kentucky Magazine. The highpoint of the recent awards is the Niche.com 2022 rankings, which placed Covington Latin School as the number one Catholic School in Kentucky. Collectively, these awards represent Covington Latin School’s continued upward trajectory as a premier Catholic educational institution.
Each of these awards is a special honor for our teachers, students, staff, families, and alumni and illustrate how we live our mission and motto each day.
Best Workplaces in Northern Kentucky
2021 Best Workplaces in Northern Kentucky Presented by NKY Magazine | April 2021 Covington Latin School was the only educational institution to reach this coveted list as a Best Workplace in Northern Kentucky. These awards honor the top fourteen businesses and organizations, both large and small, which exhibit exceptional employee resources and corporate culture. This year’s honors pay special attention to companies across the area that performed extraordinarily during the dilemmas poised by COVID-19. Amazing representatives like these make the Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana region such a great place to work.
Best Private School Greater Cincinnati Family Choice Awards Presented by Cincy Magazine | Summer 2021 Covington Latin School, as one of three finalists from the region, outshined fellow Kentucky school, Villa Madonna Academy, and Cincinnati’s Archbishop Moeller High School to win by popular vote for the “Best Private School” in the region. These annual awards recognize area businesses that are the very best in providing services and products to Greater Cincinnati’s families. The 179 categories run the gamut from Family Fun to Pets, Tasty Eats to Education and everything in between.

Most Caring Catholic School 2021 Private Education Awards – Presented by LuxLife Magazine – AI Global Media | July 2021 For this global educational competition, Covington Latin School was one of only a handful of schools selected to represent the United States. This award emphasizes a directive of Covington Latin School to educate the “whole” student focusing on supporting every student emotionally, mentally, and physically to achieve overall success. LUXlife Magazine expounds there is no more noble cause than educating the youth of today to cope with the challenges of tomorrow. LUX’s Private Education Award program is an impeccable way to confirm that our school is at the apex of the field and truly deserving of acclaim and accolades – affirming this enterprise as a cut above the rest.
Best School Spirit (K-12) Best of NKY 2021 – Sponsored by NKY Convention and Visitors Bureau | July 2021 The Best of NKY School Spirit Award for Covington Latin School exemplifies the passion every student, teacher, staff, and alum share for the institution. Competitively, Covington Latin School outshined both of our Catholic neighbors: Covington Catholic High School and Blessed Sacrament School to win the honor. For the past 10 years, the Best of NKY has celebrated all that Northern Kentucky has to offer. Thousands of people voted in NKY Magazine’s 2021 Best of NKY competition. From doughnuts to bike stores, we love celebrating the businesses of this community.
#1 Best Catholic High School in Kentucky 2022 Best Catholic High Schools in Kentucky – Presented by Niche.com | September 2021 Climbing three spots from the 2021 rankings to achieve the position as the #1 Best Catholic High School in Kentucky exemplifies Covington Latin School’s Catholic faith in commitment to the success of our students, by fostering an environment rich in belonging, classical in thought, modern in approach, all while cultivating leadership in service to others. The basis for the 2022 Best Catholic High School rankings by Niche (Niche.com) are a rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents. Niche analyzes over 100,000 schools and districts nationwide to determine the ranking evaluation, now in its eighth year. It includes data sourced from the U.S. Department of Education, SAT/ACT scores, student-teacher ratio, the quality of colleges that students consider, Catholic school ratings, and more – striving for a comparable, uniformed, well-rounded assessment.

REUNITED
Don’t forget your class reunion. I am glad I did not! Do not miss those who helped sharpen you… We graduated on June 6th, 1981. On the first weekend of this past June, 28 guys (74% of our class) in their mid (late?) 50’s revisited their mid (late?) teens as we celebrated the reunion of the Covington Latin School Class of 1981, our 40th! In many ways, it seemed like 40-years ago; in many ways, it seemed like yesterday. One of the most fun parts of organizing our class reunion was tracking everyone down. I started with the data that Covington Latin School had, then attacked Facebook, LinkedIn, WhitePages.com, etc. With the aid of a few classmates, I was able to track down 37 of 38 surviving classmates. I could not find Roy Stevens!
memories, e.g., the “old” senior lounge in the basement (now the band room), the “old” study hall (now classrooms), the “old” cafeteria (fka “The Alfred E. Packer Cafeteria’’ and now the art classroom), the “old” language/computer lab (now the Latin classroom), the “old” biology and chemistry labs (now classrooms), and the “old” library (still the “old” library!). We were then shown the new senior lounge (conveniently around the corner from the Dean of Students!), the new, state-ofthe-art labs, the new cafeteria, the Forum, the Chapel, etc. Following our time together at the school, we moved the evening to The Hofbräuhaus in Newport where we continued to imbibe adult beverages, catch-up on families, etc.
On Friday, June 4th, my classmates and many of our significant others met at Covington Latin School. Several in our class had not been back since graduation in 1981. Probably, most had not been back since the completion of the addition in 2011. We were updated on the current state of Covington Latin by John Kennedy, the Headmaster. We played class trivia where we were reminded of many things related to our time at Covington Latin School, e.g., Buck Buck, the bouncing of Mr. Whitehead’s keys in the hall, the melting of Alex Reyes’ pants, “jackdaws” with Dr. Tom, “Peaches”, eraser fights, dissection styli in the ceiling of the biology lab, jug, etc. Amy Darpel, the Director of Advancement, led our class on a tour of the building. We stopped at many places along the way and relived many great
The Leader Fall 2021
On Saturday, June 5th, our class (without our significant others) reconvened at my home where we enjoyed a steak dinner and more adult beverages. We regaled each other with tales of old, successes of new, and lessons since. We caught up on each other’s careers, families, and plans for the future. To be sure that we celebrated on the actual anniversary of our graduation date, a few of us (names intentionally left out here) lasted around the firepit until 2:00am in the morning on Sunday, June 6th! I have not seen 2:00am in decades! Our reunion exceeded every expectation that I had and was more than I hoped for. I appreciate the distance that many travelled, e.g., St. Petersburg, FL; Dallas, TX; Tucson,

make a “Class Gift” to plant “shade trees” under which later generations will sit. Our class chose a goal of $8100 in honor of the Class of 1981. I am so happy to share that our class raised $11,600, blowing out the $8100 goal! After our class reunion, I am not at all surprised. At heart, our class, and others before and after us, are a caring and generous bunch with a continued affection for Covington Latin School. The “shade trees” that Covington Latin School chose to use our gift for will help renovate the “old” library into a research and collaboration space where students can take their classical education to the next level!
AZ; Seattle, WA; Lorton, VA; Kansas City, KS; Silver Spring, MD . . . a bit closer but still a commitment to come from Columbus, OH; Dayton, OH; Winchester, KY; and Indianapolis, IN . . . even someone who came from just down the road in Morning View, KY. We have classmates with lots (and lots) of children, a bourbon distiller, some retired or thinking about it, some sold their companies, others are soldiers and veterans, teachers, businessmen, doctors, lawyers, entertainers, butchers, financial advisors, engineers, researchers, IT experts, rocket scientists, etc. Our class checked a lot of boxes. Without question, we were reminded of the role Covington Latin School played in our lives. We were reminded of the role that we played in each other’s lives. One of my favorite Bible verses seems very appropriate for graduates of Covington Latin School, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another,” Proverbs 27:17. I know others in my class sharpened me.
While I will never wish time away, I am already looking forward to our 50th class reunion. At the rate time currently flies, that is only like a few weeks from now! One of our classmates is doing a periodic email to keep everyone connected and informed about the goings-on in the lives of each other. Sometime around May of each year, I will pick an evening to have dinner together. While that will mainly cover those who live nearby, I do not want to wait for ten years to see my classmates again!
June 5, 2021
There are only a couple of teachers still with us who were at Covington Latin School when we started there in 1977. It was great seeing Father Dan Vogelpohl. I still cannot believe he was only 26 when we started at CLS and all of 30 when we graduated! To be honest, I could not believe how old my classmates are! 40-years-ago, I would never have thought we would have needed name tags if we got together! The funny thing was that when you started talking with someone, the pounds melted away, the gray hair became less obvious, the wrinkles smoothed out, and you were talking to that young man from 1981.

If you have the time, willingness, and ability, organize your class reunion. If you do not want to organize it, attend it. You will not be sorry. It is a pleasant walk through history. If you cannot attend, make a donation, plant a “shade tree” for others to sit under. By the way, I am still looking for Roy Stevens . . .
John Cain
Covington Latin School continues to make a difference in the lives of many young and gifted students. The “shade trees” we sat under while at Covington Latin School were planted by others before us. I am proud that our class chose to

For the first time in over a year, we have some semblance of normalcy with a regular start to the school year. Time honored traditions such as Olympic Day, Alumni Latin Mass and Reception, orientation, mixers, senior portraits, and Honors Assembly were brought back. It was tremendous to be able to have all of our students together for the first time since March of 2020. While our students’ faces might still be behind masks, we know their smiles are wide from the return of traditions.

Why I Give... by Jerry Kohlhepp
FAMILY LEGACY
My stint at The Covington Latin School was from September 1958 to June 1962. I went to CLS because my two older brothers, Bill ‘57 and Bob ‘59 along with my father (bless his soul!) Clifford ‘33 all of whom I looked up to very much, preceded me. It may have been the smartest thing I’ve ever done because the discipline, study habits, work ethic, logical thinking process and Fr. Vater’s power problems that I learned there have stayed with me throughout my career and lifetime. For these reasons, the Kohlhepp family has long been a big supporter of CLS and we now expect that to continue well into the future. The school (now 6 grade levels - 7th thru 12th) remains a hidden jewel of a school right here in Covington, Kentucky. Also I’ve made many lifelong friends from my time at CLS, including from our prestigious class of 1962. Quite often I thank the Lord for His guidance for directing me to and through CLS, because I’m confident I wouldn’t be what I am today if not for Covington Latin. Clearly family and CLS have been critical formations for me in my life!

Covington Latin Branches Out with ExploreMore! Gifted Program
Having a bright child can sometimes be a challenge. How do you keep them engaged? How do you equip them with grit and determination if they are never challenged in a typical classroom? Part of the mission of Covington Latin School is to “...accelerate the unique abilities of its students by fostering an environment rich in belonging, classical in thought, modern in approach, which cultivates leadership in service to others.” As such, it is the ministry of CLS to expand its outreach to younger students in the area through our ExploreMore! Gifted program.
students travel from Louisville to participate in our program. The teachers are experts in their fields so that they can answer the questions that our gifted students want to ask. From chemistry to the arts, there are so many classes to choose from during each quarterly session that it is hard to just choose one. To continue to serve the needs of the community and cultivate an environment rich in new perspectives, ideas, and experiences, ExploreMore! Gifted strives to continue to reach students in the area. The exposure to like-minded people is invaluable. If you are interested in learning about our future classes, check out our website at www.exploremoregifted.org.
This summer, ExploreMore! Gifted served students from eighteen different elementary schools in the area. Some

A MESSAGE FROM CLS ADMISSIONS
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, There were two words that came to mind as I pondered this edition of The Leader: Gratitude and Legacy. There is so much to be thankful for. Our students are engaged in the classroom by amazing teachers--- in person! Latin traditions are able to move forward. Our alumni are representing us well as leaders in the community and in their chosen professions. Our Latin School community demonstrated their commitment to the Academic Advancement Fund by making it the most successful ever. Efforts to increase our endowment were realized by adding several new scholarships that will be transformational for generations to come. And finally, our dedication to fulfill our mission of educating bright young minds have been recognized nationally. So much to celebrate in the halls of CLS. As I walk the halls, I see legacies everywhere. Whether that be in a second, third, or maybe even in a fourth generation Latin School student, or in the scholarships and financial support that our alumni have so generously given to our students, your legacy is most definitely present. There is a comfort, as I walk the hallways seeing the class composites from the nearly ten decades of graduates, that the goodness, discipline, and knowledge that was taught here will live well beyond all of us. As we enter the season of grateful hearts and thanksgiving, I hope that you find gratitude in the gifts God has given you and that you realize that your legacy is alive and well in the halls of Covington Latin.
Blessings,
Amy Darpel
