It is hard for me to believe the magazine has come this far, as it seems like just yesterday that I was putting together the first one. This issue there is a very interesting article about genetics, and I encourage you to check it out and see how genetics plays into your wether projects. RECORDS GIVE YOU IMPORTANT DATA Keeping records for a wether project can be tedious and time consuming. Showing livestock is the fun part, but the record part is just as important from an information standpoint. Keeping records on a wether project teaches a showman to account for the parts of a project, stay organized, and see at the end of the day what worked, and what did not work. In a perfect situation, an exhibitor would have a record on every animal in his or her show string. This record would include information about when the wether was born, what herd it came from if it was purchased, and the registration number (if applicable) and tattoo or tag numbers. It is best if the records are held together either in a notebook, or on the computer.

This will help a producer to know everything about the wether, and when it is due for a health checkup and veterinary care. Movement of the animal is important to know for biosecurity reasons. and current weights will help a showman to determine what the rate of gain needs to be. The feed management program can be tailored to help the wether reach the goal weight.
someone when they have a sick animal. Sometimes feed can get moldy and make an animal sick, and if a producer can catch it early, he can prevent other wethers from also getting sick.
Determining what different supplements should be added can be a challenge, but past feed data can help make the decision easier. Looking at how past animals performed on a certain product gives an exhibitor a baseline to work from. If a certain supplement did not yield the intended results, changes can be made.
The exercise regimen should also be reviewed to determine what changes need to be made, if any. This may include changing the type of exercise, duration, and even the time of day, as heat can affect an animal's ability to perform.

money on their operations and market projects. All transactions, which include revenues and expenses, should be recorded in a ledger. Revenues during show season will generally come from jackpot earnings, since animals are not sold until the very end of the project. Expenses should be recorded as they occur so an exhibitor can see what the total cost of the project is. This information can then be used to produce an annual income statement, which will show an exhibitor his or her bottom line. Budgeting is an important tool that every exhbitor should use. At the beginning of the project year, exhibitors should put together a budget for how much they want to spend on different aspects of the project. This includes but is not limited to feed, purchasing costs, veterinary care, transportation, show expenses and miscellaneous expenses. Having a budget will help a showman not to overspend on items that he does not need, and will teach financial responsibility. When making a budget, categories such as feed can vary greatly based on the current market price, so this should be taken into consideration. In youth projects, having a budget will help teach a showman to spend money wisely. If the budget for buying a market animal is $350, then the student learns he must find an animal that is that price or lower. This also teaches discipline, because exhibitors may be tempted to spend more than
they can afford. Taking a look back at the past year's expenses will allow an exhibitor to see where cuts can be made if needed, or if additional purchases can be made. It will allow an exhibitor to see if he can afford a more expensive animal, or if she can utilize the pricier supplement that yields better results. Parents can help their showmen to create these records either on the computer or on paper sheets. Most 4-H and FFA programs require these records as well, so the leaders for these programs should be able to help a showman put together the information that he or she needs to have a successful project.

THE BASICS OF GENETICS IN SHEEP & GOATS Story by Crystal Emsoff
DNA is arranged on the chromosome to form genes. A gene is a unit of DNA that codes for an individual trait. Some traits, like height or skin color or height in humans, are controlled by many genes in combination. This is why you see such a wide range between light and dark and short and tall. Other traits, however, are controlled by just a single gene. A cleft chin is an example of a single gene trait. You either have one or you don’t.
If you have browsed through a lamb breeder’s website or looked at an online sale, you have likely noticed a set of capital letters consisting of Qs, Rs, Ns and/or Ss below the rams’ names or beside a DNA field for a ewe lamb. What do these letters mean? These letters identify an animal’s genetic status for specific traits. Before we get into these, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of the component of genetics. Each cell in a living organism contains chromosomes. Different species have different numbers of chromosomes. Humans have 46. Goats have 60. Sheep have 54. These chromosomes are made of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which are complex chemicals with large molecules capable of an almost infinitely large number of structural variation. In appearance it is arranged rather like a twisted ladder.

Genes determine which trait will be affected. Alleles are the possible variations or options for a gene. In goats there are genes that determine if a kid will have horns or be polled (naturally hornless). Each gene is controlled by two alleles, one received from each parent. There is an allele that codes for horns and an allele that codes for polledness. Whether a goat has horns or not is determined by the alleles it has for the gene. Now back to those mysterious letters. What do the Qs, Rs, Ns and Ss mean? Q and R relate to scrapie resistance. Scrapie was discussed in the last issue. This neurological disease became particularly important in 2001 when the federal government began a program to eradicate Scrapie from our national flock. A major breakthrough occurred when it was discovered in the 1990s that some sheep are genetically resistant to Scrapie. Scientists were able to locate three separate genes
that determine a sheep’s susceptibility to Scrapie, the most important being codon 171. The two most common alleles for codon 171 are R (resistant) and Q (not resistant). Remember, a sheep gets one allele from each parent, so it will have a total of two. The possibly combinations are RR, QR and QQ. A sheep is resistant to scrapie as long as it has at least one R. When you breed two sheep, each parent will pass on one of its alleles to the lamb. If the sheep is RR, it will only pass Rs, so all its offspring will be resistant, regardless of the other parent’s genetics. For this reason, breeders have favored RR rams. If a parent is QR, half the offspring will inherit an R and the other half a Q. Remember QQ does not mean a sheep has scrapie. It only means that it is susceptible to the disease if exposed.

Ns and Ss represent a sheep’s genetics for Spider Lamb Syndrome. This disease was first observed in the Suffolk breed in the 1970s and spread to other breeds through crossbreeding. Affected lambs may be born normal but their legs become increasingly deformed and splayed as they grow until the lamb is no longer able to stand, eventually resulting in death. Spider Lamb Syndrome is controlled by a single gene and has been largely eliminate in the last two decades through genetic testing. S is the Spider Lamb allele, N is normal. N is dominant, so NN and NS lambs both appear normal. However, NS sheep can pass the gene onto their offspring. It will continue to go unnoticed until it is paired with another S when the NS sheep is bred to another NS sheep. The following Punnett square shows what will happen if a NS ram is bred to an NN ewe. In this example, all of the lambs will appear normal but 25% will be carriers.

The next example shows what will happen if you breed a carrier ram (NS) to a carrier ewes. In this case, 25% of the lambs will be normal, half will be carriers and another 25% will be Spider lambs. Obviously it is important to avoid breeding NS rams to NS ewe.
