GETTING READY FOR THE MAJORS For most of you, the summer jackpot season is over, as are your state fairs. That means it is time for one thing - it is time for the majors! There are a lot of livestock shows that qualify as the "majors." These shows are held in many states, including Missouri, Kentucky, Arizona, Colorado and Texas. The quality of animals at these shows is incredible, and many of the shows have exhibitors from many different states. If you are headed to one of these shows, make sure to check out our tips on preparing for the majors, as well as the upcoming entry deadlines page. I will be excited to meet some of you at these shows, and am planning to have copies of The Show Wether available, so keep an eye out for them! Good luck to all exhibitors! Sincerely,

Robyn Carlson, M.Agr - Editor

BEING PREPARED LEADS TO LESS STRESS F

or most exhibitors, jackpot season is over, and the county and state fairs have all been held. For many, this is the bulk of the show season. However, once these pass, that means that it is time for the Majors. Showing at major shows is a great experience for showmen of all ages. These shows offer unique opportunities for people to get to know others from around the country, and also to exhibit in a super competitive environment. The preperation and check-in process may be different from your local shows, so it is important to be prepared ahead of time. The first step in prepping for a large major show is to know the show rules. Different shows may have different breaks for age brackets or different rules for wethers, such as whether or not an animal can have horns in the market show (goats only). Shows may have different rules for who can even show at the market show. Many of of the major shows allow anyone to compete. For some of the Texas majors, however, only residents of Texas can compete in the market shows. Being familiar with the rules can help you decide early on whether a show is worth attending. The second step is to make sure that you complete the nomination/ registration process. Most major shows are not as simple as a weigh-in, such as a county fair. Many shows require a wether to have DNA filed when entries

are due. DNA samples are usually taken as a hair sample off the leg, but it is important to note the requirements. Many times the nomination process also includes the date that the animal needs to be in possession of the exhibitor. It is important to complete all steps of the nomination process, in order to be eligible to show. It would be a shame to miss a rule, and be disqualified. It is also very important to make sure to get your entries in on time. Many major shows have deadlines a month to several months before the actual

show date, so knowing this date is very helpful. It is important to check and determine if there is a postmarked or received-by date, and to follow that closely. The vast majority of shows now have online registration, which can be very helpful in making sure your entries are received on time. Most majors allow you to enter a certain number of animals for a species, although you may not be able to show that many. For example, the National Western Stock Show allows you to nominate 10 lambs or goats, but you can only bring four to the show for each species (junior market classes only). Exhibitors may want to enter more than they will show so they can choose which ones look the best directly prior to the show. All of the entries must be paid for, even for the ones that do not

get shown. Once the entries are in, then it is time to prepare. Wethers shown at a major show are generally prepared the same way as they would be prepared for a smaller show, with high quality feed and a good exercise program. In the week or so leading up to the show, preparation at home should begin. All of the necessary equipment should be gathered and organized, to make loading up and heading to the show as easy as possible. Nearly every major show will also require a health certificate from your veterinarian even to enter the grounds. These certificates are generally good for 30 days, but shows may have a different requirement. It is always best to check.

Be prepared for large lines and long waits at check-ins for the major shows. Bring a book or something to keep you occupied. 8 - The Show Wether

Once you get to the unloading area, there may be more paperwork to fill out, and there may be assigned pens. Make sure to check before you unload your animals. Many shows have now moved to a weight card system, instead of the traditional weigh-in. In this system, you are responsible for weighing your animal using one of the provided scales, and for turning in a card that states the weight to the organizer. There is always a deadline for this, so make sure to take note of the time and do not miss it. It is also not advisable to be intentionally inaccurate on the weight card. It can be tempting to say your wether actually weighs less than it does, to try to gain an advantage in a class. However, every major show utilizes a weigh-back system, which usually allows for a five percent difference on the top five animals in the class. On a 75-pound goat, that is only a difference of 3.75 pounds. It is best to be honest and avoid

TRACK DOGS IN WETHER PROJECTS

Story & photo by Crystal Emsoff

I

n this second article covering the value of dogs in wether projects, we will discuss the use of track dogs. Steve Sturtz is a respected track dog trainer and generously shared his thoughts on using track dogs to exercise lambs and goats. Steve grew up in Iowa raising Border Collies and moved to Texas 35 years ago where he has continued to raise and train herding dogs. In Texas, he noticed a need for good track dogs and at the same time saw a niche for dogs that didn’t quite have the talent to make good “outside working” or trial dogs. Sturtz explains that tracking wethers has numerous benefits. Aside from the obvious value of better muscle definition, he says that lambs and goats can take the stressors of travel and showing better when they are in shape. To explain, he says, “I can handle a 10-hour trip in a car a lot better if I am in shape than if I am out of shape.” Wethers are no different. The biggest advantage of tracking with a dog versus other forms of exercise, such as treadmilling, using a chariot or running

12 - The Show Wether

with a four-wheeler, is the predator/prey relationship you get with a dog. A dog is able to create fear, which gets the wether’s adrenaline and blood pumping more. Construction of your track is very important. Sturtz recommends a track that is between 30 and 50 feet long. He warns that getting longer than 50 feet can make it harder to control the dog. The curves should be between 20 and 25 feet wide and the alley width should be just three to four feet wide to prevent the wethers from turning around in the track. Gates should be located at the end of the track and it is important that the track be positioned so that the wethers’ pens are at the end rather than side. This is because lambs and goats tend to slow down when they are near their pens and you want them slowing on a curve rather than on a straightaway. Next we will discuss the ideal track dog. Steve prefers Border Collies and Kelpies or a cross between the two. He says that while other breeds have been successfully trained to track, these two breeds simply have the most consistency and proven performance over time. A lot of people misinterpret that since the dog is chasing the wethers, all you need is a heel biter. In reality, you need a dog that is also willing to bite the head if the wether turns to challenge or fight the dog. Quality trained dogs come with a price tag between $1500-$3500, depending on, as Sturtz put it, “power steering, brakes and bite.” Finewool lambs are typically raised on pasture and are

more flighty, so they take less power any injury if/when the dog bites. or bite than hair sheep, Southdowns or Real tracking should not begin until goats raised in barns. These require a the animal starts to put on finish. If little better dog with more bite control. started too soon, it will run off any Once you have your track and your track dog, the first thing you want to do is put your wethers in the track and let them explore it for a while so they learn that the curves are not dead ends. Do the same with your dog, allowing it to explore the track a few times before attempting to run the lambs or goats. It is vital that training to the track begins when the lambs or goats are young, before they are broke or have had a lot of exposure to other dogs, losing their fear of them. Sturtz says too many times showman wait until two weeks before the show, notice their wether is getting fat, and attempt to start tracking it. At this point the wether outweighs the dog by several times and have been around house pets and town dogs and therefore have no fear of dogs, thus refusing to run for the track dog. This does not mean that young animals should be run hard, but a few minutes once a week will imprint the flight response in the lamb or goat. They will learn that if they move off pressure, the dog won't bite them. They also should learn that they get to go back to their pen if they move off pressure, so they have a positive experience. The layout of the track is very important when utilizing a track dog. The curves Run your lambs or goats in should not be too tight, and the alleyway should not allow wethers to turn blankets or covers to prevent around. 13 - The Show Wether

condition you are attempting to put on. Start slowly. Do not run the lambs or goats to the point of exhaustion. If they get too tired, they will either start fighting the dog or just lie down. Once a wether learns these habits, they can be impossible to break. How long to run depends on multiple factors: the size of the track, the substrate (sand or sawdust will mean fewer laps than hard ground), the aggression of the dog, and how in shape the animals are. The rule of thumb is to run the animals just long enough that they start breathing with an open mouth. Heavy panting or foaming is too much. The number of laps will increase as the wether builds stamina. Because they are herd/flock animals, Sturtz recommends running two or three wethers together rather than just a single animal. He explains that it may take some adjusting to find the animals that run the best together. Ideally it •HUMANE •BLOODLESS •DRUG FREE

should be animals that run at roughly the same speed. Otherwise the dog will pass the slower animal to chase the faster one. Sturtz also suggests running your faster animals (such as lambs) first and the slower animals (such as goats) last so the dog doesn’t have quite as much energy for the slower ones. Keep in mind when tracking that we want sprinter muscles (short and bulky) on our wethers, not long distance muscles (long and lean). We are after short bursts of speed, not long, continuous laps. The dog should be slowed as the wethers approach the gate so the wethers are allowed to slow down and then speed the dog as the wethers enter the straightaway, so the wethers sprint through it. As with any exercise program, a consistent schedule should be followed. Three days a week, with a day or two of rest between each workout is ideal. Tracking must be balanced with any other exercise being done, as well as with the feeding program, to get the ideal condition on your lambs or goats. Working with your track dog requires a basic understanding of how a herding dog works and is beyond the scope of this article. It is strongly recommend that you spend some time with the trainer of your dog to learn how to balance and command it. Sturtz also has an excellent videos series titled "Exercising Your Lamb and Goat Project with Track Dog" showing his track design as well as how to utilize a track dog. These videos can be viewed on Youtube at www.youtube.com/user/sturtzstockdogs/ Tracking can be an extremely efficient, effective tool is getting the most out of your lamb’s or goat’s genetic potential. We thank Steve Sturtz for sharing his knowledge and experience.
