Letter From the Editor

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE This summer, after receiving a second notice on price changes from our printer, I had to take a hard look at The Show Wether and reevaluate whether I was serving you, the readers, in the best way that I could. Unfortunately, paper and ink prices have raised dramatically the last couple of years, and I have not adjusted the subscription price since the magazine was launched more than three years ago. I published a survey through the Facebook page to find out what people wanted, and I was thrilled by the responses. After looking through your input, I decided to move The Show Wether to a quarterly publication. Even though there will be fewer issues, the magazine will now have more content in each issue. This shift allows me to keep the subscription price the same. Following this issue, The Show Wether will be published in March with the Spring Issue, in June with the Summer Issue, in September with the Fall Issue, and in December with the Winter Issue. The next issue will be the 2018 Winter Issue, which will come out in December. The Facebook survey also gave me great insight into what the readership is looking for in terms of content. I will be taking your suggestions and implementing them to make The Show Wether better than ever. I am excited for this next chapter, and I am looking forward to serving you in the best way that I can. I am always looking for people to distribute The Show Wether, so if you are heading to a show and are interested, please let me know and I will send you a box. Thank you!

Pract icing Farm Safety Story and photo by Robyn Carlson, M.Agr.

It is not a subject that is talked about often enough, but farm safety is so important to people of all ages. Even when people are careful, accidents happen, and lives and limbs can be lost. Clothing As simple as it is, wearing the proper clothing can help prevent a lot of injuries from occurring. Flip-flops or other open toed shoes are not safe. Being stepped on

by animals or other people, being bitten by snakes or other insects, or tripping can all injure the foot. If working where there are sharp parts, long shirts and pants should be worn. Gloves should always be utilized. When chemicals are being used, make sure to wear protective gloves and safety glasses. Injuries to the eye or face can be especially painful. When using weapons,

such as for predator control, make sure to use ear protection. Equipment Equipment should be inspected before every use, making sure tires are aired correctly, safety features such as breaks and seatbelts are working, and door latches work. Machinery should not be left running if it is not being used, and any keys should be removed after use and placed out of reach of young children. Many kids ride on tractors with their parents, but tractor roll-overs are the leading cause of farm related fatal accidents. Machinery equipped with RollOver Protective Structures (ROPS) can prevent nearly all deaths if the operator is wearing a seat belt. However, children should not be allowed to ride on an adult’s lap as they are not protected in the event of a roll-over. Other Items Chemicals should be locked away, and guns and ammunition locked and stored separately from each other. Ladders should be stored flat on the ground so they don’t fall over on someone or can be climbed.

to an adult if you need help with anything, especially if you have never attempted the task you are trying to accomplish. Also know your family’s safety rules, and follow them in everything that you do. Many factors affect farm safety, but most accidents on the farm are caused by stress or human error. To prevent avoidable, serious accidents, take your time to think through what is happening and what you are doing.

This topic came to mind after I found my fingers pinned between one of our Boer bucks and a cattle panel after I tried to get his horns unstuck this fall. I was extremely lucky not to loose several fingers, as they were pressed down to the bone. All I could think about was my (at the time) six-month old son in the car and no one to call for help. It was very scary and very painful.

EARLY CASTRATION

"The Callicrate WEE Bander is well worth the investment."

Animals Male animals can be troublesome, especially during breeding season. Bucks and rams can charge or run over people in an attempt to get to a female, and are generally more difficult to handle during breeding season. Heavy bred females may also be challenging to handle, and females with new babies can be protective. As cute as it is to get a photo of your children with a newborn animal, make sure to do it where the doe or ewe cannot get to you. Even seasoned females who are usually docile may become protective of their young. Children A note for any children reading this - go

Copper – Friend or Foe?

Story by Crystal Emsoff

Copper is perhaps the most misunderstood component of sheep nutrition there is. The notion that copper, in any amount, is toxic to sheep is quite prevalent among those new to raising sheep and old-timers alike. But is this really the case? Believe it or not, sheep require dietary copper for nerve and muscle coordination, wool/hair pigmentation and enzyme reactions in the body. Sheep can actually suffer from copper deficiency if they do not receive enough copper in their diet. Symptoms of copper deficiency include dull, steely wool, loss of muscle control resulting in incoordination, anemia, infertility and brittle bones that are prone

Feed tags will let you know how much copper is in the feed.

to fracture. Sheep that do not consume enough copper will fail to thrive and be less productive. Copper is a naturally occurring mineral found in all organic feeds, including hays and grains. The amount of copper that accumulates in a plant will vary based on how much copper is in the soil where those plants are grown. Fortunately, most areas of the United States have enough copper in the soil to meet the requirements of sheep. However, copper interacts with molybdenum and sulfur. If excesses of these two minerals are found in the soil where feed is grown or supplemented to the animals, a copper deficiency can occur. So if sheep need copper to be healthy, why do we hear so much about copper being poisonous to sheep? The old saying, “Too much of a good thing,” applies to sheep and copper. The problem occurs when sheep consume too much copper. This can be toxic to all species of livestock but sheep are unique in that the range between not enough and too much is very small. Copper is measured in parts per million (ppm). Whereas cattle can safely consume anywhere from 10-100 ppm copper, sheep require about 5 ppm for normal, healthy functioning, but as little as just 10 ppm can be toxic. The reason for this is that sheep store excess copper in their livers rather than flushing it from their bodies. All will be fine for weeks or months, until the animal is stressed, causing the liver to dump the copper into the bloodstream, poisoning the animal, resulting in death. For this reason, it is generally

10 - The Show Wether

recommended that sheep not be fed feed or supplements with added copper. This means not using feed or mineral mixes designed for cattle or goats as these will usually have copper added to meet the higher needs of these species. Feed manufacturers are required by law to include several things on feed labels. First is the ingredient list. Most copper is added to feeds in the form of copper sulfate. If copper sulfate is listed in the ingredients, then copper has been added to the feed. Also included on feed labels is the guaranteed analysis, usually shown as a table. The guaranteed analysis shows the nutrient composition of the feed. Feed manufacturers are not required by law to include copper on guaranteed analysis, however many will. This is usually where people get confused. They will see copper, usually in the range of 5-10 ppm listed in the guaranteed analysis, and think it has copper added so is unsafe for sheep. Remember, copper occurs naturally in plants. All feeds will have some copper. To circumvent this confusion, feed companies will sometimes put the words, “No added copper” somewhere on the label instead of listing the actual amount. This does not mean the feed has no copper. It simply means no additional copper extra has been added beyond what naturally occurs. Generally speaking, if the feed is designed for sheep and has no added copper, it should be safe. I will also quickly address copper in goats. Goats have a higher copper need and tolerance than sheep. If you are feeding a feed designed for goats, it will have a proper range for them. Goat or multispecies minerals and supplements will be safe for goats. Goats raised on pasture or fed sheep feed may need supplemental

copper, often provided in the form of copper boluses, which release slowly over time. So is copper a friend or foe? A bit of both. Ensure your animals are getting enough but be careful that they don’t get too much.
