RILEY TADE FINDS SUCCESS AT NWSS Sitting on a stool with wheels outside his barn, 19-year-old Riley Tade uses a hose to wash his goats. He carefully makes sure each one is clean, and then he uses a blower to dry them. After he is done, he scoots his stool down the barn, cleaning up the shavings that spill out from the pens. Riley uses the stool out of necessity, because he suffers from a rare genetic mutation that causes cerebral palsy. However, he does not let that stop him from raising and showing goats, and has adapted how he does things to get the job done. He travels across the country showing goats, chasing banners and making friends along the way. “He loves the friends he makes at shows. He loves being at the show and having people visit with him,” said Steve Tade, Riley’s father.

Riley, who lives in Ashland, Missouri, joined 4-H seven years ago, and initially wanted to show steers. Steve explains that Riley loves cattle, but because he needs a walker to get around, they decided that goats would be a better animal for him to show. They had purchased some goats to clear brush on their property, so they were familiar with them. Today the family also raises goats to sell, and Riley helps with kidding and daily care of their herd of 25 does. He also has a herd of 18 Angus cows, and helps with calving as well. Most of the time he shows the goats he raises, and he works with the animals every day to get them ready for the show ring. “Riley breaks his own goats to lead, and he does a lot of the other work with them as well. He sits on a stool that he can roll around on and he can pull them

around the barn,” Steve said.

jackpot shows.

He continued, “Then we put them on the walker, and he starts leading them every night. We have a little show area, and the other night he told me he said he needed lights for his walker so he could work later in the evening.”

“It’s been amazing. At every show we have had people offer to help, and that’s a big reason why we continue to show. In sporting events you don’t see that help. Here we are trying to beat others and they will still help us,” Steve said.

Riley and his family recognize that it takes hard work at home to find success in the show ring. “You have 15 minutes to show what you have been doing at home all summer,” Steve stated. Once Riley gets to the show ring, friends help him to show his wethers. He pulls them with a hook on his walker, and then someone else will brace the goat for the judge. For several years, family friend Creighton Sapp has helped Riley show at jackpots and at his county fair. Sapp recently aged out of showing, so others have stepped in to help him including Chloe Goretska, who helped him at the American Royal and at NAILE, and Gentry Duncan, who has helped him at his county fair and at

At the 2018 National Western Stock Show, Riley had the Grand Champion Lightweight goat, with the help of Dylan Hummel, who helped him to show his goat. Steve explained that this year was Riley’s last year to be able to show at NWSS, and he was very grateful for the experience. He missed the show last year because he was in the hospital, so it was his last opportunity. Since Riley had a champion, he was eligible to sell in the junior livestock auction. “His second biggest passion besides showing is he loves livestock auctions. John Korrey is his hero and is the auctioneer there at NWSS. He knew Riley liked auctions, and he came down into the ring and gave

him a video. People were so good to him,” Steve said. Even though he will not be showing at NWSS anymore, Riley plans to continue to show at the county and state level, as well as at other national shows.

Custom Show Goat Leads

When asked what Riley’s biggest challenge is when showing goats, his dad was quick to point out they do not see things as challenges, but as things they have to adapt to. The biggest adaption they have to make is to the shavings, and how deep they are. Deeper shavings make it softer and less slick for the goats to show, but can make pushing a walker difficult. However, Riley adapts to every ring he goes in and makes it work, just as he has adapted his walker to show goats.

Dos and Don'ts for Buying TIPS FOR PURCHASING YOUR NEW SHOW STOCK

DO

DON'T

1. SET A BUDGET AND SHOP FOR WETHERS THAT FIT WITHIN THAT BUDGET.

1. IMPULSE BUY AND SPEND MORE THAN YOU BUDGETED FOR.

2. LOOK FOR SALES OR BREEDERS FROM WHOM YOU WANT TO PURCHASE YOUR WETHER.

2. BUY WETHERS FROM THE SALE BARN. THESE ANIMALS ARE USUALLY CULL ANIMALS AND ARE RARELY SHOW QUALITY.

3. GO LOOK AT WETHERS IN PERSON IF POSSIBLE. IF NOT, ASK FOR PHOTOS AND VIDEOS. 4. ASK FOR GUIDANCE FROM YOUR BREEDER, 4-H LEADER, FFA ADVISOR OR OTHER EXHIBITORS.

3. BUY WETHERS WITHOUT LOOKING AT THEM. 4. JUST SEARCH THE INTERNET TO ANSWER EVERY QUESTION YOU HAVE. THE ANSWERS MAY NOT BE RIGHT OR MAY BE OUTDATED.

BUYING: COMMERCIAL VS SHOW STOCK

Story by Crystal Emsoff

I remember, when I was a young showman starting out, thinking that if I just worked really hard with my market lamb, got him well trained and exercised him a lot, that I could win Grand Champion with him at our county fair. When I got beat, I figured it must have been because someone outworked me. It never occurred to me that they probably had a better lamb to start with. That was many years ago and I have learned a lot since then, but I still hear this same theory from young showmen all the time. Most Americans can probably remember someone playing “This Little Piggy Went to Market” on their toes when they were children. I used to think that lucky little pig was going shopping at the super market. Unfortunately for Piggy, that wasn’t the market the nursery rhyme meant. Rather, Piggy was on his way the livestock market, where he

would soon be turned into ham and pork chops. In simplest terms, market animals are meat animals. Their final destination will be the dinner plate. However, when we are talking about market animals for shows, it means much more than this. Just about any lamb or goat can be processed for meat, provided it is healthy and fed appropriately. However, when we are talking about market animals for junior livestock shows, not just any lamb or goat will do. A very specific type of animal is desired. While all show lambs and goats should be good market animals (ie. make good meat), not all good market animals will be good show animals. Over the years, a very specific standard has evolved for what makes an ideal show lamb or goat. This standard does take into account market traits, but includes much more. Just because you

Both of these lambs will produce good meat but only one is bred to be a champion. Choose wisely when picking out your wether. 12 - The Show Wether

Uncle Joe happens to raise Boer goats or your neighbor breeds Hampshire sheep, does not mean their animals will be good to show. Breeders who specialize in lambs for youth 4-H, FFA and Grange “club” members to show are called “club lamb” breeders. Goats bred for the same purpose are more often called show goats, though you may sometimes also hear them referred to as club or market goats. Club lamb and show goat breeders invest huge amounts of money on top genetics to produce wethers with superior conformation and muscling. They spend countless hours studying pedigrees and mastering the craft of livestock selection and breeding. And they are usually happy to provide support and guidance to the buyers of their animals throughout the duration of the project. So let’s talk about what to look for in a market wether. Since market animals are ultimately for meat, and meat is muscle, muscle obviously is very important. Indeed, few lambs or goats have more muscle than a quality show wether. Your wether, regardless if it is a lamb or goat, should have an abundance of muscle in the lower leg, hip, loin and rack. Believe it or not, muscle is not something that can be built with exercise and fancy supplements. In reality, it is almost entirely genetic! While muscle can be toned with exercise, you will never be able to turn a light muscled wether into a powerful, heavily muscled one if it doesn’t have the genetics for it. Be careful though, not to confuse muscle with fat. Look for width in the hip, pins and chest floor and a groove down the center to of the rack as an indication that a young lamb or goat will have future muscling. Muscle is important, but it is not the

only characteristic judges are looking for and it should not the only characteristic you look for when selecting your show prospect. Structure is truly what separates the show animals from the non-show animals. Structure is how the skeleton is put together. It provides the foundation and the framework for the animal’s muscle. If a lamb or goat does not start with a good topline, good rib shape, a good neck set, a smooth front end, wide hip and straight legs, it is not going to have those traits later. Be sure to watch the animal move. It should walk fluidly and freely with its head up high and its feet landing squarely and firmly on the ground. Finally are the bells and whistles. These are the traits that separate the great animals from the good ones. These are

things you should look for after you have found a solid foundation of structure and muscle. Market animals should have a tight, thin hide. They should have big bone. And then there is “shag.” This is the wool and hair on the lower legs. Shag is hot right now. Like really hot. A good judge will not pick a lamb just because it has a lot of leg wool, but it sure is the icing on the cake. Same with leg hair on your goats. The wool or hair can be fitted to give the animal the appearance of even great bone dimension, which adds to an overall impression of power and balance. Every showman must evaluate their personal goals when looking for a wether that will meet their needs. It costs the same to feed a quality animal as a poor one. If you are going to put in the work and effort to do your best, why not give yourself the best chance at success by starting with a quality animal?
