KNOWING OPTIONS ALLOWS FOR GREATER BUYING POWER This time of the year, sheep and goat producers are sorting through their stock, deciding which wethers and females have made the cut and will be sold for show. There will be hundreds of sales, both online and in person, and private treaty sales are being held at farms all over the country. Learning to navigate the sale world can definitely be a daunting task. However, knowing what to do will help you to prepare and bring home your next prospects. Online Sales Online sales are gaining more popularity every year. They allow producers to showcase their genetics across the country, and allow buyers a bidding opportunity that is different from the traditional auction. Most online sales feature at least one photo and a description of the animal. Producers are going to describe the animal in the best way they can. Make sure to take a close look at the photo. Although unethical, is it not hard for a producer to alter a photo, so look for irregular lines or areas that do not seem realistic. If you question whether or not the photo has been altered, it may be wise to pass on the animal. The last thing you want is to be misled. Although the vast majority of breeders will not do this, you should scrutinize each photo carefully. If you can, it is best to attend an open house or make an appointment with the breeder to see their stock in person. If you are not able to do this, see if you know anyone in the area who can go look at the wethers in person for you.
You can also see if the producers have videos available of their stock you can view. Most of the online sales offer horse race style bidding, which means all lots close simultaneously. The sale will have an end time, and then if any addition bidding is made, the sale is extended, usually by five minutes. This allows buyers to switch lots if they get outbid, and allows the buyers more options. There is a countdown clock, and the sale will not close until the time is up and no additional bids have been placed.

Before you purchase from an online sale, make sure you have transportation lined up. Many breeders know livestock haulers who can help. If you are close enough, you can pick up the wether personally. You should pick up your animal in a timely manner after the sale. Once the sale is finished, the animal now belongs to you and anything that happens to it is your responsibility. Many producers have a limit on how long they will hold an animal. It is also disrespectful to expect the producer to feed your animal for free for weeks on end. Make sure to be able to pick it up quickly. Live Auctions The other common type of auction is a live auction, where lots are auctioned off one-by-one by an auctioneer. These kinds of auctions usually offer a viewing

"No mat ter what kind of sale you choose, buy from reputable breeders and try to see the stock in person." period in the morning followed by a lunch and then the sale. An advantage of this type of sale is that it allows sideby-side comparison of animals. Often, at live auctions, many of the consignors (sellers) will be present and available to talk with potential buyers and answer any questions they may have. Additionally, live auctions may be broadcast online and may also be taking internet or phone bids, so be sure to research the auction details before the sale so that you know what to expect and how to proceed with your bidding. However, it can be harder to stick to a budget when you do not know what the next animal will bring. It can be very easy to overbid on an animal that you really want, especially if it is near the end of the sale. It is best to go into this type of sale with several animals in mind and if one goes over your budget, you have other options. Private Treaty Sales Private treaty sales offer the most personalized buying experience. Buyers can make an appointment to go look at the stock a producer has to offer, and then have one-on-one time to view the animals and make a purchase. Most producers will price their stock before you arrive, and will only show you the animals in your budget. This helps you to stick to what you can afford. This type of sale is usually first-come, first-serve. Some producers offer the ability to put down a deposit to hold
your spot in line, or to hold an animal once you view it. Not all producers offer this, however, so make sure to ask when you book your appointment. Some producers may also keep a list of people who are interested, take photos of their available stock and send them to those people. Keep in mind this list is likely going to multiple buyers, so if you see an animal you like, it is best to let the breeder know and to make an appointment as soon as possible. If you cannot go to the farm right away, you can offer to pay a deposit up front. It is not fair to the seller to hold on to an animal for you for several weeks. If you change your mind, the seller could have passed on other sales in the meantime. Remember that most deposits are non-refundable, and ususally come with a deadline in which the animals must
be picked up. Just like online sales, be respectful of this and make sure to pick up your animal in a timely manner. This type of sale allows you to have a very personalized buying experience, and to take the time that you need to find your next prospect. It also allows you to talk to the breeder about any questions you may have about your new project. The downside to this type of purchase is that you cannot view animals from multiple breeders at the same time like you can with online sales and live auctions. No matter what kind of sale you choose, buy from reputable breeders and try to go see the stock in person. Buying new stock is a very exciting time of the year and another chance to chase banners.

COMMON VACCINES FOR WETHERS Story by Crystal Emsoff
When you purchase your wether, there are no doubt some questions you will want to ask your breeder. On this list should include which vaccinations your wether has received and if he needs any more. When considering vaccinations, it is important to understand how they work. The body combats disease by creating antibodies that attack pathogens (disease causing organisms). The only way the body knows to produce these antibodies is by being exposed to the disease. With a few exceptions, vaccines are usually killed or modified versions of a bacteria or virus, which is then injected into the animal. Though the vaccine is not actually capable of creating illness, the body still launches an immune response against the killed or modified virus or bacteria, creating antibodies to combat the perceived threat. The immune system then “remembers the disease and is ready to quickly attack the moment it is exposed to the real thing, eliminating the pathogens before they have a chance to multiply and cause illness.
12 - The Show Wether
In unvaccinated animals, pathogens multiply faster than antibodies can be produced, allowing the disease to take over and sicken or kill the animal. Most vaccines require more than one dose to achieve complete protection. The initial dose primes the immune system, while the second, or booster dose, creates maximum immunity. There are several diseases that wethers should be vaccinated for. The most important are the clostridial diseases. The most common ones that affect sheep and goats are tetanus and clostridium perfringens types C and D. Treatment of these diseases is rarely successful, so prevention through vaccination is key. Tetanus is a bacterial disease that affects a variety of animals. It causes the muscles in the body to spasm and become rigid (hence the common name lockjaw), eventually leading to respiratory or heart failure. The bacteria may be common in the environment and enters the body through breaks in the skin or mouth. Docking tails or castration are common times of infections in wethers. Enterotoxemia, also referred to as overeating disease, causes a lot of confusion among new lamb and goat owners. Contrary to its name, it neither causes nor is caused by overeating and should not be confused with grain overload or acidosis, which is directly caused by overeating grain or changing the ration too quickly. Rather, enterotoxemia’s common name comes from that fact that it typically affects the fastest growing
animals that are eating diets high in grain. Enterotoxemia is caused by two strains of bacteria called clostridium perfringens types C and D. These bacteria normally live in small numbers in the gastrointestinal tract of sheep and goats, but problems occur when large amounts of rich feed are fed, allowing these bacteria to rapidly multiply. These bacteria produce a toxin that poisons the animal. Type C usually affects young nursing animals while type D affects older animals eating solid feed. Because show wethers are typically fed high levels of grain for faster growth, they are particularly at risk for this disease. Enterotoxemia hits fast and there is rarely time to treat the animal before death. Symptoms include bloating, scours, abdominal pain, convulsions and death. Often the only sign is finding a dead wether when an exhibitor goes out at chore time. All wethers should be vaccinated for tetanus and enterotoxemia. These vaccines are available in a single combination commonly referred to as “CD&T.” Most breeders will give the initial dose at 4 weeks old with a booster three to four weeks later. Check with your breeder to make sure your wether has received at least two doses of CD&T when you buy him. If he has not, talk to your vet or advisor about getting a booster. Some breeders will alternatively use 7 or 8 way clostridial vaccine, particularly if their sheep are exposed to cattle. These will offer protection against overeating C and D and tetanus as well as blackleg, a far less common disease in sheep. Sore mouth is another disease that can affect wethers. Sore mouth is a highly contagious viral disease that causes blisters and sores around the mouth, and occasionally other areas of exposed skin. Humans can also contract
sore mouth, in the form of orf, so handle infected animals cautiously with gloves. Sore mouth is rarely dangerous or deadly to wethers, but it does cause discomfort and can interfere with weight gains as wethers may be reluctant to eat. Infected animals cannot be shown until lesions are fully healed, which typically takes about two weeks, regardless if they are treated or not. The virus can live for years on porous surfaces such as in barns or wooden feeders. There are vaccines available to attempt to prevent sore mouth disease. Rather than being injected, the vaccine is “painted” on a scratch in the animal’s ear or flank. This vaccine is not killed or modified. Because it creates an actual infection in the animal, many breeders are reluctant to use as it will introduce the virus into a clean flock or herd. Furthermore, there are numerous strains of the virus and vaccinating for

one may not provide protection against another. Ask your breeder if your wether has been vaccinated for soremouth. If not, it may be wise to vaccinate your wether if you plan to attend numerous shows where he may be exposed to the disease, or if you have had animals with sore mouth in your facilities in the past. Less common disease that wethers may be vaccinated for include pasteurella pneumonia caused by mannheimia haemolytica, and caseous lymphadenitis (CL), which can cause abscesses. These vaccines would be considered nonessential for wethers, but it is good to know what they are if your breeder mentions them. As always, consult with your veterinarian when considering any health issues and follow all labeled dosage and withdrawal instructions for all vaccines.
