Cowgirl ChristmasBy Judy Wright
It’s that time of year again! The WNFR is coming to town and fun and fashion go hand in hand! We wanted to share some highlights from our fashion shoot to get you off on the right foot – or boot – for Rodeo-ready hair, makeup and wardrobe. By: Judy Wright Photos by: www.lasvegasimagestudio.com Model: Nikki Monto
Eyes: Add a bit of a soft brightening cream under
the eyes then follow with concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone under and around your eyes. This will add a lifted effect to the area, making you look awake and refreshed. On Nikki, we opted for a soft, yet defined look. We went for bronze, gold and warm tones on the lid paired with a rich, chocolate brown eyeliner. A soft champagne shimmer was used to highlight above the brow bone. Don’t be afraid of waterproof mascara. It wears all day and night yet comes off easily with makeup remover.
Skin: Choose a foundation that works best for your Tan Fur Jacket worn by Nikki By: BootBarn.comant
skin. If your face is usually dry, choose a liquid or stick because they are creamier and usually pack more moisturizing properties. If your skin tends to be oily, go with a powder foundation that will help absorb excess shine. On Nikki, we chose a soft, dewy look that radiates a youthful glow. This allows for more of a natural highlight to the areas of the skin… the cheekbones, center of nose and other areas without over doing it on highlighting powders. Don’t forget setting spray – it really helps!

Lips: Lips can be bold or soft. It is preference and the shade
of the lip color is what matters. On Nikki, we chose to go with a matte, neutral tone yet with a hint of color topped off with a mauve/pink gloss thus creating a balanced look and ensuring her eyes are the focus.
Hair: Whether your hair is long or short, keep it simple yet
gorgeous. Take the time to treat your hair with wonderful products to keep it looking beautiful. Add a spray of dry shampoo to help tease hair and keep body without over doing it on hairspray. On Nikki, we went for a wavy, soft-sexy look that goes easy from day to night. When curling, don’t take the iron all the way out to the ends; this helps create that beachy, fun look to the hair which looks fabulous with – or without – a hat!
Wardrobe: Nikki is wearing various outfits that showcase different
types of looks and feel. Red is beautifully bold and always makes a fabulous holiday statement; black is forever classic, a cult favorite and always appropriate. Browns and tans are fun, flirty and perfect for any event; turquoise is symbolic of the western lifestyle and never goes out of style. Have fun with your wardrobe and experiment with styles, fashion, fringe, belts, jewelry, vests and jackets. Boot cut jeans or skinny jeans with boots - both work and look great. And don’t forget a great handbag to complete your look. Judy applying Nikki’s makeup

T
he excitement of traveling can be overwhelming and especially overwhelming when it comes to packing. And let me assume that before you escape on your journey somewhere, you typically plan out your outfits, possibly go buy new outfits, then procrastinate packing until the last minute. You then are left in despair and distraught that you don’t have enough room for your new coat that only matches one outfit. With the rockin’ and rollin’ of Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo, the holiday festivities and family reunions, you may become a traveling gypsy living in and out of your suitcase. Although it’s super fun, the frustrations of not having enough outfits or not packing the right things, could make or break the enjoyment of being a self-proclaimed wanderer. So, in no particular order, I have compiled a few tips for you to avoid packing pitfalls and incorporate on your next cowgirl adventure.
16 | Cowgirls In Style | NFR ISSUE 2016
1 Make a list: Although we constantly take mental notes, when the time comes and you’re under packing pressure, your mental packing list seems to diminish. Ask yourself, what will you be doing and where; walking vs. dancing, day vs. night, dressing to impress or hiking and adventuring. When you think of something, write it down. Or even better, create a list of necessities and work from there.
2
Roll your clothes: When packing, always roll your clothes oppose to folding. In doing so, you save space and makes your clothes less wrinkled.
4
Pack for compatibility: You know you have to wear a different outfit each day, so the key is selecting versatile and interchangeable pieces. Pack a lot of basic colors first and then add variety with colorful or patterned pieces. Fashionista and avid traveler of over 20 different countries, Roxy Arreloa (@roxy.celia) suggests, “As an avid traveler, I have learned a few tricks of the trade when it comes to packing light and stylish. Would you believe me if I told you I spent a month in Europe and only brought a carry-on suitcase and a backpack? The keys to my success are basic; no literally, basic tees, colors, prints. Another great idea is actually trying these outfits on to see if you like them before packing!”
5 Think accessories: Spice up any outfit with accessories such as belts, jewelry and scarves. Not only are they essentials, they save space and add instant color to your outfit. You can virtually take one outfit from day to night.
6
Scale back on shoes: Although this is extremely hard, it’s the easiest way to save space, giving you more room to add more clothes. When packing, place shoes heel-to-toe in the bottom of your luggage along the edge or laying on their side. You can also fill your shoes with items wrapped in a sock.
7
Space-saving compression: If you absolutely need an abundance of outfits (like myself), space saving compression bags like Space Bag let you double your wardrobe. They work well for sweaters, coats and jackets.
3
Carry-ons are your friend: Literally, carry-ons can be your best friend. Travel with an approved carryon suitcase in addition to your check baggage. In this suitcase you can store more outfits or your liquids and leave more room and less weight in your checked baggage. And if your checked luggage gets misplaced, you will have a backup plan.
9
Grab a backpack and use it as your personal item. You can stuff your purse in your backpack or put it in your checked baggage. Regardless, your backpack will be very beneficial on your trip.
8
Buy travel size: Remember if you carry on liquids, aerosols or gels, they have to be in containers under 3.4 ounces. Stores like Target and Sephora offer airplane approved containers.
don’t sweat the small stuff. slow down, get off your phone and enjoy the journey!
reminders l Have some patience and don’t freak about the small stuff, because there are many things we can’t control while traveling and sometimes they work out for the best. One more thing, talk to people. By talking to people, not only can you learn but it can only enhance the experience. Most importantly, be safe and live it up! Cheers.

What a great year for WPRA barrel racer, Stevi Hillman. We chat with Stevi as she gets ready for the ride of her life at the NFR in Las Vegas CIS: When did you start barrel racing? Stevi: I’ve been on a horse since before I could walk, so I was really young running barrels at play days CIS: What is your favorite and worst thing about traveling from rodeo to rodeo? Stevi: Favorite thing I would have to say is getting to see Gods beautiful country and there’s always another run either same day the next day. Worst thing is missing family and staying in your routine. CIS: Do you have a favorite clothing fashion? Stevi: I love Rock N Roll Cowgirl clothing all the way around. I am more of a simply classy person, I don’t get too crazy lol and they have something for all different styles of people.
CIS: What was the first thing you did when you found out you qualified for the NFR? Stevi: Cried! Lol and then have just been so thankful for the opportunity and excited. CIS: What horse will you be riding in the NFR?
Stevi: Cuatro Fame aka: Truck and Morning Traffic aka: Martini
CIS: What tips would you tell a young girl who has goals to make the NFR? Stevi: Have grit! Push harder than you’ve ever pushed and do not give up on your goals. Work hard and it will pay off, and make one run at a time.

Kimmie Wall -Roosevelt, UT Photos by: Christy Burleson Photography Photos by: Christy Burleson Photography
CIS: What horse will you be riding in the NFR? Kimmie: I will be riding TKW Bullysfamous Fox aka Foxy She is an 8 yr old mare my husband Travis and I raised and trained together. Foxy knows she is a Rockstar and likes to be treated like one. She is a sassy diva. CIS: What is your favorite and least favorite thing about the road? Kimmie: My favorite thing about the rodeo road is my ‘rodeo family’. We embrace each other and treat each other as a family does. NFR or not I would not trade the friends I have made for anything. The road is tough and you need to be strong. When you have moments of weakness you need to be surrounded with people that will lift you up and make you strong again. The hardest thing aboutit is being away from my family. It is honestly the hardest thing I have ever done. As a mom to miss the little things is sometimes the hardest. During the winter my kids have school and other activities so they don’t get to go with me. My husband has a full time job so he doesn’t. Get to come with me very often either.
CIS: What was the first thing you did when you qualified for the NFR? Kimmie: I would not talk about Vegas or the WNFR for a long time. I was afraid if I talked about Vegas I would jinx things. The first time we actually talked about it there was an article that came out talking about me going to the WNFR. We were riding colts in the arena and we actually cried. To think we have been working towards this goal for so long and it is going to become a reality. That is a great feeling. CIS: What advice would you give a young girl interested in barrel racing? Kimmie: I could not do the things I do without an amazing support system. My motto is always stay positive. If I have helped someone realize it is never to late to make your dreams a reality I have succeeded. We are having a blast just enjoying this ride. I treat every experience as if it will never happen again. I just live on the moment and enjoy it. Find more photos of Kimmie on our Rodeo Runway page!

Photos by: Christy Burleson Photography Photos by: Christy Burleson Photography CIS: When did you start barrel racing? Jana: I ran at my first play day when I was 3 yrs old. CIS: What is your favorite and worst thing about traveling from rodeo to rodeo? Jana: My favorite thing about traveling to a rodeo is getting to see all of God’s beautiful landscaping! We are so blessed to be able to get to see the beauty of our country Bc we drive so many miles all year in different areas. The worst part of driving to a rodeo for me is when we have all night drives and trying to stay awake to get there! CIS: Do you have a favorite clothing fashion? Jana: I am a jeans a t shirt kind of girl. I usually have a ball cap and tennis shoes on as well. I love my Cowgirl Tuff clothes!
CIS: What was the first thing you did when you found out you qualified for the NFR? Jana: Called my husband and son and said a prayer to thank God for allowing me another chance to get to run at the NFR! CIS: What horse will you be riding in the NFR? I Jana: I am taking four barrel horses but my main mount will be Dashing Klee, aka, Chick. CIS: What tips would you tell a young girl who has goals to make the NFR? Jana: Never give up on your dream! When it’s Gods time for your dream to be fulfilled he will provide everything you need! We want to thank Photographer, Make-up Artist, Christy Burleson for these beautiful photos we have featured for the barrel racers. Christy is also a contestant in the California Circut in the WPRA. 2016 Miss Rodeo America Katherine Merck Photo by: Las Vegas Image Studio Hair and Makeup: Judy Wright
CIS: Where are you from? Katherine: As a native of Spokane, Washington, I am the first Miss Rodeo Washington to bring the title of Miss Rodeo America home to the Evergreen State. CIS: When did you realize you wanted to get involved with rodeo royalty? Katherine: I got involved in rodeo royalty when I was 23 and halfway through my first year of law school. I thought it would be wonderful to represent my hometown, so I tried out for Miss Spokane Interstate Rodeo 2014. I had a fantastic summer of traveling to rodeos all over the Northwest, and in October 2014 I competed for Miss Rodeo Washington 2015, the title I took in to the Miss Rodeo America Pageant. It has been a truly incredible journey! CIS: Do you compete in any rodeo events? Katherine: I started riding at age 11 and although I spent hours practicing running barrels, my non-rodeo parents wanted me to learn a discipline that would make me an all-around horse-
woman. I started reining and combined my dance background with my love of riding in freestyle reining. I’ve competed in the American Quarter Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and our local affiliates over the years. My goal after I finish my reign as Miss Rodeo America is to start team roping. I’ll be heading down to Texas for a roping clinic as soon as the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is over! CIS: What are your favorite fashion styles? Katherine: My style is classic chic – I love to update classic vintage looks to make them more modern. I draw inspiration from women that inspire me, including Grace Kelly, Dale Evans, and Judy Garland. I particularly love the styles of the 1950’s and combining high fashion with traditional western looks. My signature accessory is a wild rag, because it is easy to pack and adds a fun pop of color to any outfit. I pride myself on being a cowgirl and the wild rag can traditionally be found out on the ranch or being worn by our PRCA pickup men.
“My best advice to young women is to learn who you are – your strengths, your weaknesses, and your values – and strive to be the best version of yourself every single day!” -Katherine Merck Miss Rodeo America 2016
CIS: What has been your favorite part of being MRA 2016? Katherine: Representing the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association as Miss Rodeo America has been the greatest job I could imagine, and the most amazing part of wearing the Landstrom’s Black Hills Gold crown on my hat has been the opportunity to positively impact the people around me the way that our rodeo community has impacted me. The people I have met and the opportunity to make a positive impact on them has without a doubt been my favorite part of serving as Miss Rodeo America 2016. CIS: What are you plans for the future? Katherine: In January, I’ll be headed back to complete my final year at Gonzaga University School of Law. After graduation, I hope to further my goal of promoting ethical justice in the areas of land use, water rights and agricultural estate planning. I want to help famers and ranchers protect their land and way of life by assisting the succession of land to the next generation and ensuring a viable future for our agricultural industry. CIS: What would you tell other young women who are interested in becoming involved in rodeo royalty? Katherine: There is so much more to being rodeo royalty than wearing a crown on your cowboy hat! First, the moment that you become a titleholder, it is no longer about you. You represent the sport of rodeo, your hometown, agriculture, your sponsors, and an entire way of life.
