10 Healthy
Keeping your horse healthy takes effort so to make life easier we’ve put together 10 quick tips to ensure your horse stays happy, healthy and safe. When people dream of owning a horse they focus on the long rides, the wide-open spaces and the feelings of freedom riding a horse can bring. But an unhealthy horse can’t give you any of those. And keeping your horse healthy takes effort. So to make life easier, we’ve put together 10 quick tips to ensure your horse stays happy, healthy and safe. Here they are...
1
. Choose a safe and comfortable environment: Your horse needs to be kept in an environment where they not only feel safe, but an environment that is also comfortable. Too many horses are left out in the elements, so providing them with a shelter and a stall is important. You can also use a run-in shed, or a grouping of trees which gives them the ability to protect themselves. A dry area to walk and stand is also important, grass, rubber mats, saw dust and even straw can provide good footing and a hoof healthy environment.
2
. Give Them Routine Exams: It’s important to have your horse checked by a vet on a regular basis. As close as you are to your horse and as knowledgeable as you are about them it’s still possible to miss things. Getting routine checkups will give you baseline information allowing you and your vet to keep tabs on any changes that occur.
3
. Routine Attention and Affection: Just like you and I horse’s need regular attention and affection for optimal physical and mental well-being. By regularly interacting with your 30 | Cowgirls In Style | Fall 2019
horse, you teach them to be patient and open to contact with other humans. This is important for them because it helps them with stress and anxiety. Plus, it makes it easier for your veterinarian to examine them, because they will be used to human touch and attention.
4
. Regular Exercise: Exercise is a vital part of your horse’s good health and if your horse is housed in a barn regularly scheduled exercise is a must. Regular exercise keeps your horse healthy, helps them relieve stress and allows them to expel pent up energy.
5
. Take Great Care of Their Hooves: It’s important to regularly trim and/or get your horse shoed by an experienced farrier. Every horse is different when it comes to hoof growth, so frequency may vary. But for most horses every 4-8 weeks is a pretty standard range for hoof trimming. It’s also important to tend to the hooves daily. Picking the hooves and keeping an eye out for any signs of cracking or thrush will help you stay on top of things.
6
. VCPR: By maintaining a Veterinarian-Client-
Patient Relationship, your veterinarian is better able to examine your horse and make timely recommendations related to your horse’s health and well-being. A good vet is worth their weight in gold and the sooner you can create a relationship with one the better.Additionally, when and if an emergency arises, you’ll know who to call.
Horse Tips
7
. Good Nutrition:Your horse’s digestive system was designed to process large amounts of fibrous foods on a regular basis. Hay and/ or grass is a must to keep their digestive systems running smoothly. If they are in need of a little energy boost, grain can also be added. Traditional mineral blocks, loose minerals or commercially available complete grain concentrates are perfect for supplying vital minerals. Fresh, clean water is also a must. If you followed tip #6 then you have a vet you can trust, who can also help guide you on any special nutritional needs your horse may have.
8
9
. Keep Vaccinations Current: Vaccinations when properly administered remain one of the most effective ways to ensure your horse stays healthy. Every time your horse gets sick it takes a tremendous amount of energy to recover. It can also put them at risk for more serious diseases. Your vet can give you a list of the most important vaccinations and tell you what your horse may be more susceptible to in your area.
10
. Keep Parasites Under Control: If you own horses, you know what a problem parasite can be. Untreated, parasites can quickly cause your horse to lose weight, develop a poor hair coat and even develop colic. The problem is that many commercial dewormers are now resistant to worms found in most pastures. Your vet can help you analyze your horse’s unique parasite risk profile and help you develop a plan.
Routine Dental Care: Your horses teeth are more important than you may think. And it’s absolutely essential to have your horse’s teeth checked at least once a year. A horse’s teeth continue to grow unless they are worn down by opposing teeth. And a horse’s top teeth naturally sit wider than their bottom teeth, so floating needs to be done in to eliminate the points that develop. Without regular dental maintenance your horse could develop problems that could lead to more serious problems like choke and colic. There you go, 10 easy to follow tip that will help you keep you horse healthy, happy and safe. Fall 2019 | www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 31

Meet the Ottesons
TURQUOISE FEVER
Donna Otteson
Donna, the family matriarch, acts as the glue that holds the Otteson clan together. She works closely with her nephews Tony, Trenton, Lane, and Tristan and her brothers-in-law, Danny, and Tommy. Donna runs a jewelry business and owns claims in the Royston mining district alongside Danny and Tommy. Although she handles most of the business side, Donna never hesitates to join the men as they mine, and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty.
Danny Otteson
As a second-generation miner, Danny learned everything he knows about the industry from his late father, Lynn Otteson. He continues to keep the tradition alive by teaching his sons, Lane and Tristan, everything his father taught him about mining. An expert turquoise prospector, he has walked thousands of miles in search of the precious stone. Danny shares the Royston mining claim with his brother Tommy and sister-in-law Donna.
Tommy Otteson
Although he wasn’t born in Tonopah, Nevada, like his brother Danny, Tommy spent most of his life mining with his late father, Lynn Otteson. He has passed on his knowledge of the mining industry to all ten of his children, especially his oldest sons Tony and Trenton, who turn to him for expert advice. He also enjoys mining alongside his sons-in-law, who married into the Otteson turquoise business. Tommy is an extremely skilled stonecutter and polisher.
38 | Cowgirls In Style | Fall 2019
Tony Otteson
Tony is a third-generation miner who runs several claims with his brother Trenton. He learned the trade from his father, Tommy. When it comes to the business, he uses a systematic approach and takes responsibility for many of the moving parts in the mining process. From prospecting to polishing turquoise stones, Tony is exceptionally skilled at his craft. When it comes to creating family heirlooms that will be passed down for generations to come, the Otteson clan relies on Tony for impeccable results. Tony and his wife Emily have four children.
Trenton Otteson
Trenton splits his time between home life in Las Vegas and the desolate claims that he mines with his brother Tony. Trenton knows what hard work is all about and is a physically exceptional miner. He is an expert prospector and takes on every day with guts and gusto. Trenton is always there to encourage his brother when Tony worries about the business. He is married to JaKell, and together they have a son and a newborn daughter. Trenton also has two older sons from a previous marriage.
Tristan Otteson Third-generation miner and the youngest son of Danny Otteson, Tristan, and his brother Lane are rapidly learning the turquoise trade. The brothers recently began operating their first claim, putting a unique twist to the way they approach the family business. A deep thinker, Tristan more than most family members, is interested in the history of turquoise and the science behind its formation. He is married to Annie, and they have a baby boy.
Lane Otteson
Tristan’s older brother, Lane, is passionate about the family business. He takes in everything he can about mining turquoise from his father, uncle, and cousins. After obtaining his blasting license, Lane, alongside Tristan, devote the bulk of each day mining their very own claim. Lane always remains optimistic and tries to keep everyone’s spirits up, even when they are striking out at the mines. Fall 2019 | www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 39

TURQUOISE FEVER Emily Otteson
Emily Otteson enthusiastically embraced the turquoise business and lifestyle when she married Tony Otteson. Like her husband, she takes on numerous responsibilities to help the family, including online turquoise sales, managing social media accounts, and even joins Tony and Trenton on the mines. After losing her first husband to cancer, Emily is passionate about the safety of the job site.
JaKell Otteson
Trenton’s wife JaKell, often works alongside Emily, helping market the family’s online business and managing social media accounts. With a background in fashion, JaKell keeps the Ottesons informed about the latest trends and emerging styles in the ever-changing jewelry industry. Her valuable input helps the Otteson family produce pieces that sell.

Q’s and A’s CIS Magazine: Where do you live? Stephanie Griffey: Pocatello, Idaho CIS: What are your social media accounts? S.G.: @cour troomcowgirl @griffeylaw CIS: When did you star t your Instagram account? S.G.: In 2016, my first job out of law school was as a Public Defender. True to cowgirl form, I was too stubborn to mold into what ever yone other attorney wore, so I stuck with my cowgirl attire. I wore a mixture of cowboy boots, turquoise, fringe, leather jackets and wild rags with professional wear to cour t ever y day. Judges, Prosecutors, clients –they all noticed and talked about my unusual attire. Not long after I realized the impact it made on these people, I star ted sharing photos of my western-inspired cour troom attire on Instagram as “Cour troom Cowgirl” to reach a wider audience. Cour troom Cowgirl has since morphed into a platform where I share my horses, family and lifestyle too –something I enjoy much more than solely fashion. CIS: Tell us a little about your family? S.G.: My husband is Justin. He is from Kansas and we met at a National horse show in Blackfoot, Idaho the summer before I went to law school. When I first saw him, he did a backflip onto his horse and I asked for his number. He said no. Obviously, he came around. He is the nicest human I know. Justin owns his own wind turbine diagnostic and maintenance company, 300 Feet Wind, and works at wind farms all over the countr y to provide our world with clean energy. Justin and I have two children: Jace, our three year old son, and Jentr y, our 18-month old daughter. Both of them are especially fond of our western lifestyle. As a mom, it warms my hear t to see them love the western lifestyle as much, if not more, than I do. (continued...)

CIS: Are you an attorney? Could you tell us about your business? S.G.: I am an attorney. I own my own law firm, Griffey Law & Mediation, PLLC, where I specialize in equine law and mediation. At one point during a previous position as an Associate Attorney, I received an evaluation from a par tner who recommended that I spend less time with my horses and find a daycare that could care for my son later than 6:30 p.m.. Both suggestions were made so I could work later and longer. I q uit. A few months later, I went job hunting and hired myself. I star ted my own law firm so that I could have the flexibility to do what I love - horses - and have time with the people I love - my family. And it gets better because my law firm focuses on helping and educating the horse industr y that I so admire. By specializing in horse law, I target a niche client base. I am an atypical, untraditional lawyer and that’s just the way I like it. I’ve always been that way. I don’t often meet the horses that belong to my clients, but I feel like I know them, their medical issues, their training issues, their habit and their histor y. Horse rescues, mustang rehoming, horse therapy businesses and other philanthropic horse-related entities and causes are tied to what I do as an equine lawyer. I like to think my work goes beyond helping a horse owner with his/her legal issue; I’m helping the horse. I love that. That is my favorite thing. When I decided to become a lawyer, I never envisioned being a horse lawyer, but it is such a natural, perfect progression of my life that it astonishes, even me to this day.

S.G.: Always wear a smile – literally and figuratively. First, most of the photos you share of yourself should be of you smiling. It’s genuine. It’s relatable. People like smiles. Smiles make people smile. Just smile, okay? Second, and more figuratively, respond to all questions and messages with a smile –be a happy, kind, and caring human, even to the people you don’t know. I guarantee that if a stranger comments on your photo and, in turn, you make that person smile, he or she will come back for more. That’s the key to growing. CIS: What are your goals for the next five years? S.G.: My horse goal is to be a world champion. I have an amazing reining cow horse who is a father to my awesome barrel horse. I have big plans for both of them. My career goals are to 1) be a public speaker, educator, and leader in the industr y on horse law and 2) be a judge. Although some say I don’t have enough grey hairs to be on the bench, even in five years, a good grey hair dye can fix that.
CIS: Many people look at Instagram influencers as celebrities. What is your favorite thing about being an influencer? S.G.: Hands down, the friendships I have made. CIS: Least favorite? CIS: Where are you from? Taylor Karl: I was born and raised in Calgar y, Alberta, Canada. CIS: Tell us about your living arrangement... Do you live on a farm, ranch, acerage, city? T.K: About 8 months ago we moved from a little acreage back to a small town to have our second baby. We are now in the beginning prep stages of building our forever home out on the family ranch in Longview, Alber ta. CIS: Tell us a little about your family? T.K.: I met my husband Brad in high school. You could say he was my high school sweethear t! We will have been married for 4 years in September. We have two little boys, Wyatt who is 3 and Stetson who is 6 months. Wyatt is our animal lover, and Stetson is our wild man! We can’t wait to see where life will take them. CIS: How many horses, livestock, pets do you have. Tell us about them? T.K.: We have 33 horses, a border collie/Australian Shepherd cross named Bandit and 2 barn cats, Frankie and Freddie. Many of our horses have been in my husband’s family since he was a kid. My husband currently runs the family ranch as we finish some rebuilds and prepping for cattle next year. Our dog Bandit is his right hand woman on the trials! Bandit is almost 3 years old and was the wildest puppy you would ever meet. She is now so mellow and has found her calling in the mountains with Brad. Bandit is also Wyatt and Stetson’s best friend at home. CIS: When did you star t your Instagram account? T.K.: I star ted to grow my instagram about 3 years ago. CIS: Has it become a home business for you? If so, could you talk more about that? T.K.: It’s more of a side hobby. I’m a full time mom, but have loved finding my niche and an outlet to express myself, even just a little bit. I think it’s impor tant to feel like you have an identity outside of being a mom!

CIS: Many people look at Instagram influencers as celebrities. What is your favorite thing about being an influencer? T.K.: The people I have met! From companies and brands, to other influencers, to just interacting with my followers. It’s so fun to see where everyone lives and to find a common ground with each other. I’ve made a few really amazing social media friends that I’ve never met in person, but I feel like we have known each other forever. CIS: Least favorite? T.K.: Keeping up with the algorithm, and trying not to compare yourself to others on Instagram. Always have to remember it’s still just an app! CIS: How did you get affiliation w/businesses? Fashion, or other products? Did you contact them or did they find you? T.K.: Both! I started with just sharing my own wardrobe pieces and tagging the companies, to having a few companies reach out to work together and then also reaching out to the brands that I loved and wanted to build a relationship with. So far it’s been really positive! CIS: Any tips or advice to those that are trying to grow their social media and how you built your Instagram following? T.K.: Find your niche, and be yourself! I learned quickly that people didn’t care if I was sticking to the trends, they loved to see the real life side of being a wife and mom, and I love that so much. Don’t get discouraged by the ever growing flow of “influencers.” You don’t need 10k followers to be an influencer. Strive every day to show up and be yourself! No matter the number, your followers will love you for that.

Q’s and A’s CIS Magazine: Where are you from? Dallas Bauer : I am originally from Spokane Washington CIS: Tell us about your living arrangement... Do you live on a farm, ranch, acerage, city? D.B.: Currently I am living in nor th Phoenix in the city and my horses actually live about 2 blocks from me down the road at a club that is on the Phoenix mountain preser ve with access to trails. I grew up having acreage and when I moved here we had to change it up due to wanting to be closer to the city and my job. CIS: Tell us a little about your family? D.B.: My family is ver y fun, suppor tive group of people. I have one brother and then my mom and dad, who all work in the family business. I am currently the only one not living in Spokane, but I manage to see them about ever y month or ever y other. We like to go on a lot of family trips together. CIS: How many horses, livestock, pets do you have? Tell us about them. D.B.: I have 2 horses and 1 puppy. My one horse ,Lacey is 5 years old and I got her when she was 2. It was the first horse that I trained myself for barrel racing. She is my fire cracker and I am hoping to have her be a rodeo horse in this upcoming year as we just star ted competing last year. Rumor is my 2 year old that I actually just got this spring as another prospect to train, and am hoping to futurity her in 2 years and eventually rodeo with her as well. She is the easiest and most natural talented horse I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with, so I am really excited! And that leaves me with my puppy who is 12 weeks old and is a black lab. His name is Baloo like the jungle book lol. He is a spunky, yet I want to cuddle with you type of dog. CIS: When did you star t your Instagram account? D.B.: I star ted my instagram account in Januar y 2017. I mainly star ted it because I felt like my personal account was filled with people who didn’t care about horses so I wanted a place that I could grow a following that loved horses as much as I did. I had no idea it would grow this much though. (continued...)

CIS: What type of business do you do? Has IG affected that and how? D.B.: I am currently working for a similar type of company that my parents run up in Washington, but I’m down here doing commercial security system sales for industrial and manufacturing buildings. But I did star t a small business selling Lightroom presets to my followers about 7 months ago. IG has made it possible to market to people all around the world by just posting a photo I love with a filter and having people falling in love with them. It is pretty cool to scroll through my feed and see people using my presets and the messages I get on how much people love them. I am hoping to expand off of just presets and provide more products to my followers! CIS: Many people look at Instagram influencers as celebrities. What is your favorite thing about being an influencer? D.B.: I mean I never thought I was going to have this many people following along and have an influence on the people who follow me, but my favorite thing is being able to communicate real life things to people with no fluff and have them appreciate the realness that I give them. I just love being able to be myself and speak my mind and have people provide their opinions, whether they agree or not. Basically, love star ting a conversation and making people think about their day. CIS:Least favorite? D.B.: The hard par t is having the people who obviously disagree with you, your training style whatever it may be. There are a lot of negative people as well on instagram that tr y to bring people down no matter how many followers you have. Just have to ignore them and know what you are doing is right and that you don’t need to listen to some person over the web tr ying to tell you other wise CIS: Any tips or advice to those that are tr ying to grow their social media and how you built your Instagram following? 76 | Cowgirls In Style | FALL 2019
D.B.:I think the two biggest things are to be honest and genuine. The more you are yourself and post captions that you are passionate about, the more people are going to follow along. I mean post the good and the bad, nobody wants to see the “highlight reel” as they call it. We all struggle, have bad days, self doubt put it out there because people love to be able to see they aren’t the only ones. And the last thing I would say is to post high quality photos with your iPhone or camera.
