t’s rodeo time and we are so ready for the NFR and all of the excitement that it brings!
It’s time for celebration as we are walking down memory lane as we revel in our 10th anniversary of Cowgirls In Style Magazine! This is our 10th year and we could not be more excited! We have included a special section in this issue that goes back in time of some of the highlights that we have experienced at Cowgirls In Style magazine. What a ride it has been! With this anniversary, we decided to bring back a few of our featured people over the years! We are featuring Tyson Durphey and wife, Shea Fisher-Durfey who graced our cover back in 2014. These are just a few of those that we have had the honor of featuring over the past 10 years. We are checking in on them and getting an update of what has happened in their lives the past 10 years. We are also excited to feature the Miss Ro-

Also, we are featuring what to wear to the NFR ideas and of course our annual Christmas Gift Guide. Plus, you will enjoy the fashion of Boot Barn in our Rodeo Runway section! The past couple of years have put our hearts and minds into perspective with the ongoing COVID virus. May we remember to love and laugh a little more and cherish the memories we make. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who have struggled with this virus and have lost loved ones. We wish you all a wonderful year for 2022! Merry Christmas from our Home to Yours!

“Read A Book, Help A Cowboy!” I absolutely love what Shanna Hatfield does each year, “Read A Book, Help A Cowboy,” Campaign. If you buy one of Shanna’s books through December 24th, she will donate 10% of all her net book proceeds to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. The JCCF is a non-profit organization that assists rodeo athletes who have sustained catastrophic injuries and are unable to work for an extended period. The JCCF steps in and steps up, offering support to injured cowboys until they can get back on their feet and back to competing. It’s a wonderful thing for the rodeo athletes to be able to heal without being overwhelmed by financial worries. The other great thing about the JCCF is that they dedicate one hundred percent of all contributions received for disbursement to eligible applicants without any administrative fees being subtracted. When you donate $1, that whole dollar goes directly into the fund. You can find Shanna’s books in digital, paperback, hardback, and audio formats. She writes sweet historical and contemporary romance, rural humor. She has also written a children’s book, cookbooks, and entertaining guides. You can find her books at, Amazon, Amazon UK, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, Apple, Audible, Books a Million. Go to her website at www.shannahatfield.com

Is A Used Barrel Racing Saddle Your Best Option... By: Brian Garvin
There are many considerations that must be made in order to ensure that you are purchasing a suitable product for your animal’s performance and safety as well as your safety.
I
f you are interested in a used barrel racing saddle, you may be wondering if this is truly your best option. If you participate in barrel racing, you know and understand the importance of speed and performance. When it comes to Western-styled saddles, the barrel racing model is considered to be the smallest. It is also the most lightweight horse saddle on the market.
saddles. If you are in the market for a saddle of this type, it may be best to select a used model. First, you will save a lot of money on your purchase and second, the unit is likely to fit more comfortably on your horse.
If you engage in barrel racing, it is important to integrate a saddle that does not put a lot of weight and strain on your horse. It is also important to ensure that your weight is evenly The skirts on this type of saddle are relatively distributed so that the animal is more comsmall and the tree section is also smaller on fortable. The barrel saddle helps to distribute this type of saddle compared to traditional weight appropriately as it has a flat seat. 24 | Cowgirls In Style | December 2021
Credit: Greg Poulsen
In addition to weight distribution, this is also important when it comes to balancing the horse as it runs around the barrels in the race. This is an essential component when it comes to your overall racing performance, the safety of your horse, and your safety as a rider. When choosing a used barrel racing saddle, you will find that even though the seat is flat the section that is known as the “Cantle and Pommel” is elevated so that when you sit in the saddle, you are secured. If you elect to choose a saddle that is used, it is essential that you take a look at the area known
as the “Horn” and the “Stirrup”. The horn should be relatively tall and it should also be narrow and completely functional. Functionality is imperative in barrel racing as it will provide an area for you to hold on to while racing. In addition to this, the horn will be beneficial when it comes to actually dismounting the horse at the end of the event that you take part in. The stirrup section should be narrow, but it should not be so narrow that your foot is tight inside of it. You should ensure that your feet are able to move in and out of the stirrup easily. If you are unable to do this with ease, it could be a potential safety issue. www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 25
Stable Life When it comes to stirrups, it is important to understand that the feet will often come in contact with the barrels as the horse maneuvers around them. For this reason, if you are purchasing a used barrel racing saddle, you should ensure that there is a protective covering that will help prevent your feet from becoming injured. It is often best to look for used saddles that incorporate thick types of leather for protection on the stirrups. As you can see, it may be beneficial to purchase a used barrel racing saddle, but there are many considerations that must be made in order to ensure that you are purchasing a suitable product for your animal’s performance and safety as well as your safety.

Tyson Durfey & Shea FisherDurfey
We catch up with past world Champion Tie Down Roper, Tyson Durfey and his wife Shea, who is a business owner, country music singer and mother of three...
Q’s & A’s with Shea and Ty Durfey Cowgirls In Style Magazine: We last had you on our cover when you and Ty were married. Three kids later and several successful businesses, how is life going? Shea Fisher Durfey: Life is great, thanks for asking! The last 8 years have really flown by. Getting married, starting a family- now having 3 kids Praise Royal (5), Risen Breeze (2.5), Tyen Cross (4 months). Life keeps us very busy. Over the last 8 years since you had us on the cover I have released several new songs to radio and recently had my single, Don’t Rush go to #1 back home in Australia! Music has always been a huge part of my life, but having children and running businesses became a priority for a few years, but I am so excited to be back, busy with my music. Our Buckle company Shea Michelle Buckles has been doing awesome things! Our company has tripled in the last 8 years & it’s so rewarding to see something you spent so much time on doing so well. We really do appreciate all of the support the western community has given us. Some super exciting news is only last month I released my Shea Baby clothing line! This has been a dream of mine for a long time and to finally be able to do it gives me butterflies still. Our launch was a huge success and I am so excited to see so many kiddos wearing their outfits during the NFR. Tyson has been super busy also with his TD Mentorship program where he helps up and coming athletes with training and the mind set of Rodeo. This has been cool to watch come about. So between his companies and rodeo, our kiddos and my businesses, we are constantly busy- in a good way! CIS: Where are you now living? Could you tell us about your ranch? S.F.D: We live just outside of Weatherford,

We spend a lot of time there as my Dad also has an Airboat we get to use. Our property has a beautiful indoor arena around 125ft by 250ft in size, which has been a huge blessing for those hot Texas days or cold rainy days. This past year we were able to build our dream home after saving for the last 8 years. CIS: You now have 2 darling daughters and a handsome baby boy. How do you organize your time between your businesses and your family? S.F.D. I work a lot at night! I like to be present still in my kiddos lives so I do a lot of work when they sleep. I do have a wonderful lady who helps me some with the kids during the day which allows me to keep working, but I work from my home office so I don’t miss out on too much with the kids. The girls stay pretty busy between dance, gymnastics, swimming, soccer etc. I love taking the girls to do these types of things, so after school until bed time I am very present with the kiddos. I love being a Mom. If I wasn’t so busy I would have 5 kids lol.

This year was a little rough for him losing his good horse in January and hurting his ACL in June. He had to miss a lot of rodeos & decided he would come home and heal up and get re-focused for 2022. But we are so excited to cheer on our fellow rodeo friends in Vegas. CIS: How is your family doing in Australia? S.F.D.: They are doing good. The world is kinda crazy right now. I am sad I can’t fly home and see my family because of how strict Australia is with covid. Q’s & A’s
Cowgirls In Style: Where are you from? Jordan Tierney: I am from Oral, SD. I reside on the family ranch with my parents; we run about 150 cow-calf pairs of commercial black angus. We also raise and train AQHA performance horses. CIS: How many horses do you have and have you ridden horses all of your life? J.T.: Personally I have about three horses, but on the ranch we have more. I have ridden horses all my life and started competing in rodeo at the age of 5 years old. I grew up competing in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and team roping in various associations such as 4-H, Little Britches, High School, Collegiate and Amateur Rodeo. CIS: What are your hobbies, interests outside of rodeo? J.T.: My hobbies outside of rodeo are doing bridal makeup. I really enjoy learning new makeup techniques and doing glam makeup for brides and bridesmaids. Also aside from makeup I enjoy working out and living an active lifestyle. With the free time I have, I really enjoy any time I get to spend with friends and family! CIS: How old were you when you entered your first rodeo pageant? J.T.: I was 23 years old when I entered my first rodeo queen pageant. It was the contest from Miss Days of ’76 2018, I was blessed enough to walk away with the title and it was the first of my three title I have held. CIS: What is the hardest part of the competition? J.T.: Competition is all encompassing and there are a lot of ups and downs with all pageants. I would say that when it came to the Miss Rodeo America Pageant, the event I was most anxious for was Horsemanship because it’s a random draw horse where you don’t get to warm them up prior to completing your pattern and I wanted to do well in it, so I put a lot of pressure on myself. Overall the hardest part of the Miss Rodeo America Pageant was keeping my energy up over the course of 8 days. Most days I got up around 4:00 AM and didn’t get to bed until 11:00 PM, so it was very long days if you let them be!
As Miss Rodeo America, I don’t just represent Professional Rodeo, but also the Western Lifestyle, so being home engulfed in that lifestyle gives you a renewed spirit. -Jordan Tierney
CIS: You have the opportunity to serve as Miss Rodeo America for 2 years because of the COVID pandemic. How did you feel when you were first asked if you would complete another year? J.T.: Honestly I have a very open ended plan for my future and nothing is set in stone, so I felt comfortable committing to another year because I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything in the coming future. Also there were a lot of events that I was scheduled to go to that I missed out on so to have the opportunity to go to them in 2021 means a lot. Also a plus side to the pandemic was that I got to go to some events that normally I wouldn’t get to go to had it been a normal year, so that was special to me as well.
when I have interactions like that it give me the reassurance to keep going! CIS: You seem to be the type of person who kind of goes with the flow and doesn’t let things bother you. How do you get your strength? J.T..: Yes I am a very much go with the flow type of person. I don’t know if being the youngest of four is to blame for that, but I am very grateful that not much bothers me, especially in 2020! On a more serious note I get my strength from my Lord and Savior. My faith is extremely important to me and if I didn’t have it 2020 would’ve been a much scarier year for me. Whatever happens will happen, but God knows how it’s all going to turn out and I have confidence in that.
CIS: Could you tell us how life as MRA has been during this pandemic? J.T..: Well normally Miss Rodeo America is home for about 30 days out of the year and travels over 100K miles during the year. am so proud to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of Cowgirls In Style Magazine. It has been a dream I have had since I was a child. I remember being 6 years old and saving my money to buy my very first, “Western Horseman” magazine. I thumbed through that magazine until its pages were ragged and worn. That magazine gave me the inspiration of creating a magazine for the cowgirl. To give the cowgirl a voice that was so needed in a world of western magazines that catered to men. I wanted to create a magazine exclusively for the cowgirl. This is the only national publication that is soley owned by cowgirls for the past 10 years that honors the role of the cowgirl.
Thank you for your support for the past 10 years!!!! In the above cover is our very first issue of Cowgirls In Style magazine which came out in the summer of 2011 and we featured country music singer, Terri Clark! It was the very first digital Cowgirl magazine. We took the digital world by storm with this first Cowgirl’s Lifestyle magazine! We added print issues with the next issue which was the 2011 NFR issue. We have been going strong ever since! |
Above is our NFR 2017 issue featuring the “Heartland” cast and series star, Amber Marshall who plays Amy Flemming on the series. We introduced the cast and what they were presently up to. It was our highest selling issue to date. We were one of the first American Cowgirl’s publication to feature the Canadian series.
