Gretchen Polhemus Jensen BACKGROUND: Co-Host ABC “Good Things Utah” Model ESPN Reporter Actress Miss Texas Miss USA 1989
Gretchen spent her life in Arlington and my college days at Texas Tech University. One of my jobs in college was cleaning horse stalls. I wasn’t raised on a ranch or farm but when you live in Texas, you fall in love with the culture that’s all around you. After my year as Miss USA, I started my career with ESPN television covering equestrian sports. I worked on a show called, “America’s Horse” featuring the American Quarter Horse. I also reported during the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas for a while. That exposure to equine sports invited me to celebrity events including the Ben Johnson Celebrity Cutting and Roping. I fell in love with cutting and started competing on my own. I even purchased a Doc A Lena’s blood line horse but due to my traveling schedule, couldn’t spend enough time training and competing. I thoroughly enjoyed riding the most amazing and prized horses that were generously donated for our use. I also competed in Team Penning, Barrel Racing and Reiners. I also announced for Bad Company Rodeo Company on horseback. My career continued in sports with ESPN for a number of years covering a variety of events from the Bud Lite Water Ski Tour, Pro/Am Beach Volleyball, International Special Olympics, Off Shore Powerboat Racing, ESPN’s Game Show,” The Dream League” and many more.
I also appeared in the remake of the movie, “Bonanza” with Michael Landon and Ben Johnson. I have continued my modeling career throughout the years. After Miss USA, Wrangler Jeans invited me to be a part of their Western Original Campaign along with George Strait, Nolan Ryan and Herschel Walker. I continued to model and in 2011, More Magazine voted me as one of the top models over 35 in the USA. In 2013, Shape Magazine did a story on her and other former MIss USA’s and where they are now. I also appeared in TIME Magazine featuring the anniversary of the 60 th Anniversary of the Miss USA Pageant and their former Title Holders. I now Co-Host a morning weekday lifestyle show on ABC called Good Things Utah. Some of my favorite interviews have been with Miss Kay from Duck Dynasty, Cody Simpson, Gavin Degraw, Mark Ballas, Manu Bennett, Chelsie Hightower and Peter Mayhew, just to name a few. I am a single mother of 5 children and I enjoy corporate speaking with my title of “A Million to One Odds,” which is about how the Wall Street Journal quoted a million to one odds that I would become the 5th consecutive Miss Texas to win the title of Miss USA. I finished second runner up at Miss Universe. Spring/Summer 2014 | www.CowgirlsInStyle.com

alving season is almost upon us down here on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Thinking back through the years I can think of quite a few mishaps around here. The
best ones though are the ones that you can look back on and have a good laugh about. With that said, here’s one that brings a smile to my face. In the spring of 2005, Shane and I were still in the courting phase of our relationship. We were newly engaged and still learning how to work with one another. Most of you will smile when you read my previous sentence because you know what I am talking about. When you roll your sleeves up and do some nitty, gritty ranch work with someone you get to know them on a level that you never knew existed. It may even be on a level that you never expected to see, never wanted to see, or wish you had never seen before. This wasn’t that extreme, but the outcome definitely let my soon-to-be-husband know that he hadn’t picked out a meek female for his bride, that’s for sure! It was the middle of calving season; we were tired, dirty, and cold. We had been nursing along several calves on milk replacer, but we had been searching for a real cow to put the strongest calf on. We finally got a candidate in the corral. Shane had her haltered and tied short to the fence. She had just lost her calf so our first priority was to milk her out a bit so we could feed an orphan who needed her colostrum (first milk) then we were going to put one of the stronger calves on her because she wasn’t exactly a peach. Well, she got an idea of what we had in mind and she didn’t like it at all. She fought around for quite some time. Shane finally grew tired of her antics and got a rope. He got her legs tied (sort of) and yelled at me to come over and hold her tail (which was fed under her closest back leg). This was “supposed” to keep her from kicking him. Oh boy…..as I look back I should have known this was a bad idea. Did I also mention that I was quite scrawny back in those days? Yep, all 120 lbs of me and I truly was a weakling. I was worried about the impending wedding so I had been dieting fiercely. It didn’t do much for me in the “hearty ranch girl” department. I took after the job of holding the cow’s tail and did my best to hold on. Shane set about milking her into a bucket. She struggled and fought around, but we managed to get almost half a bucket full. Things continued to take a downward spiral as she fought harder and harder. I had to readjust the tail on more than one occasion. Shane knew I was having a hard time 24| Cowgirls In Style | SPring/SUmmer 2014
holding that tail, but yelled at me, “Whatever you do, don’t let go of that tail!” Right about then, she kicked….and she kicked hard. There went the tail, there went her hoof into the back of Shane’s head, there I went knocked on my butt, and there went the milk bucket….all over me! She managed to scrape me with her leg too so I had tears ready to brim over. Shane was hollering and trying to regain his composure. I tried to get to my feet and rescue the remaining milk. About that time, here her backend came swinging back at me as she tried to fight her way out of the halter. Once again, she knocked me down and as I went I slung the milk bucket at the fence….WHAM!!! Milk went everywhere! Oh man…..what a nightmare! Shane was yelling, I was crying/yelling back, the cow was bellowing, it wasn’t good. I can sit here and chuckle about it now, but at the time it was far from funny. Shane still asks why I threw the bucket of milk against the fence. I have to remind him that I didn’t “throw” it….I had tripped on a frozen cow pile while trying to get out of the way. It was either the milk or me that went flying….selfpreservation won out that day, I guess! After things settled down, we salvaged a bit of the milk and we managed to get a bit more out of her. The colostrum had already been set aside so that was saved. The baby calf got what he needed. The orphaned calf got a mom and the cow got a baby (not that she wanted one by then). And well, we learned what each of us can/won’t do in a tight situation. We have had a lot of “togetherness exercises” since that first spring. I call them that because that’s what they are in essence. Everything we do on the ranch requires teamwork and a true partnership. Whenever we work together to this day there may be yelling and sometimes confusion, but at the end of the day we know that we are there for each other. We can hug, laugh, and know that we are in this together….no matter the outcome. One way or another we will get the job done…..and be able to smile and tell stories about it in years to come! I see this in other ranch families too and it warms my heart. I think it’s these “togetherness exercises” that truly keep us together and make us who we are. I’m proud of that!

Fit Cowgirl 40 Days, 13 Teams and One Goal... The Results are in from our 1st Cowgirl Fit Challenge!
F
orty days, thirteen teams and one goal, to lose weight and get physically fit. Was it possible to lose any type of weight in only forty days? Well, these contestants found out that you can!
If you are interested in joining the Cowgirl Fit Revolution, follow us on facebook at www.Facebook.com/Cowgirlfit or on our website at www.cowgirlfit,com You can also read the latest fitness information on our new online Cowgirl Fit magazine that will be available online on our website at www.cowgirlfit.com
To start, each contestant took their measurements, weighed in and sent in pictures of their current weight on the scales and before photos. From their, the Become the Best you can be! contestants were matched up with a partner. If the contestant had requested a certain partner, Cowgirl Fit tried to accommodate that request. The partners were teamed up by location and age. The reason for teaming the contestants up with partners was to help each other along their way. It is always easier to lose weight and get fit when you have someone that is helping and pushing you along. When one gets down, the other can help pick them up. The contest started on February 17 and ended on March 28th. A special Facebook group was set up for the contest so that the contestants could correspond with one another. This group enabled the contestants to share recipes,
exercise ideas, but most importantly to cheer and motivate each other along the way. The women became very good friends in this challenge and even mentioned that winning the grand prize wasn’t the biggest prize in all of thiis. They were happy to have made new friends that would last a lifetime and to have lost weight which has started them on a lifelong fitness quest. Even though starting out, each person was kind of in on it on their own, it ended in team work and friendships made. This challenge has started them out on a fitness journey that they will continue to work on each day. It is a life change.

In October I had lost 80 pounds so far, then my weight had finally hit a stopping point in the winter. I couldn't go past a certain weight and I felt like giving up. I tried for four months to drop weight but it just wasn't happening. Shea Fisher and Professional Tie Down Roper, Tyson Durfey Tie the Knot. CIS Magazine gets up close with their rustic, personal wedding
O
n New Year’s Eve 2013, 6x WNFR qualifier, Tyson Durfey proposed to Australian born singer/song writer Shea Fisher in New York City’s Central Park. “The next day, my brain automatically started planning a wedding. I knew it was going to be a big year for the both of us, and that I would have to get on it straight away,” said the new Mrs. Durfey. On October 6th, 180 guests from Scotland, Canada, Brazile, Australia, and all over the United States congregated at Vista West Ranch located in Dripping Springs, Texas, where the tie-down roper and singer tied the knot. “I wanted a rustic wedding that was also elegant and glamorous, with a fun country side to it,” said Shea of her inspiration for her wedding theme. Vista West proved to be just the place to host such a wedding. The ceremony was held outdoors under an arbor filled with fresh cut roses overlooking the scenic Texas Hill Country. Ted Wiese, a rodeo cowboy minister, performed the ceremony. “He (Ted) does all the hospitality stuff at the big rodeos, so it was neat to be able to incorporate him into the wedding,” said Shea. A stunning bride walked down the aisle to the awaiting Tyson, who said he didn’t expect the ceremony to be filled with so many tear jerking moments. “I was trying to hold it back. I didn’t start balling, but I let a few tears go. I never thought I would marry someone so perfect in my eyes,” said Tyson. The couple chose
to write their own vows to one another, “Tyson kind of blew me away when he wrote his vows that rhymed the whole way through! I thought I was the one that was a song writer, but I guess he one upped me there!” said Shea. Both agreed that their first act of marriage should be to receive communion together, “Shea and I are big believers in Jesus Christ, following his word and his way, and I thought that was a great way to start our marriage off,” said Tyson. Shea carried a picture of her sister Tami, who passed in 2010, in a locket on her bouquet during the ceremony “I wanted to be able to include her in the wedding without it being awkward,” stated Shea.
“I wanted a rustic wedding that was also elegant and glamourus, with a fun Country side to it.” ~Shea Fisher Following a Christ centered ceremony; guests were invited to an outdoor garden, where a guitarist entertained while appetizers and drinks were served. Following cocktails, a reception was held in a barn a few steps from the ceremoeverything in the same area where the guests didn’t have to travel from the (Continued on page 40) SPring/Summer 2014 | www.CowgirlsInStyle.com

ceremony to the reception,” said Shea. The venue was indeed the epitome of rustic glamor. The reception saw some guests showing off athletic moves not seen since high school in the bouquet and garter toss’s, along with the customary wedding party toasts. The father of both bride and groom also gave toasts, which is an Australian custom. Speeches ranged from tear jerking to comical. Tyson listed Daniel’s, Shea’s brother, speech as a memorable moment, “He really chose his words wisely and was hilarious.” The guests were invited to create their own cheesecake masterpieces at a cheesecake station, and a photo booth was on site for guests to take fun pictures as memorabilia for the bride and groom. When asked what their favorite memory of the wedding weekend was, both Tyson and Shea found it hard to just pick one, “I had should such a great time all day. The kiss at the altar is great; you are finally husband and wife. I also loved being able to dance with my Dad. Dad and I had never danced together until my wedding night!” said Shea. Tyson listed seeing Shea coming down the aisle and all the reception toasts as his highlights along with his singing debut at the rehearsal dinner, “I had never sang with a microphone before. I didn’t get booed off the stage, so that was good!” The couple postponed the honey moon until after the WNFR. They left for Bora Bora (pictures on page 44) the day after the Finals wrapped up and spent a week before continuing on to Australia where they spent the Christmas holidays with Shea’s family.
Boots were a special design by Corral Boots for not only Shea and Tyson, but the wedding party.

Summer Travel Plan Your Escape for the Summer By: Susan Gentry
Summer... That word brings to mind so many reflections of childhood memories from road trips to sandy beaches to the countryside. School is out and you’re ready to venture.
W
ith summer just around the corner, now is the time to plan your summer vacation. Whether you are looking for a new rodeo to check out or jam at some country music concerts, visit some historical sites or to just take in the tranquility of the great outdoors, we have picked three of our favorite cities to check out.
First on the vacation planner is San Antonio, TX. If you have never been, this summer is the time to go. With it’s beautiful river walk, to the Alamo, you won’t be disapointed. Another great city to visit in the summer is Nashville, TN. Always a bustling city, the first week of June brings you the CMA Music Festival which gives you more concerts than you can count. The night life and historical setting of the Grand Ole Opry and much more make this city one of our favorites to visit. You can’t skip Salt Lake City, UT. Many think this city is a hohum not too exciting city. Not so... With it’s towering mountain ranges, Salt Lake City is one of the most beautiful cities in the west. July is a perfect time to visit as this is when they celebrate their state’s birth with fireworks, a parade and the Day’s of ‘47 Rodeo. This rodeo is one of the best in the nation and lasts a good, long week. So saddle up and enjoy the perfect summer destinations. 50 | Cowgirls In Style | Spring/Summer 2014
San Antonio, Texas Those seeking a little Texas frontier history are sure to find it here -- San Antonio proudly touts sites like the Alamo, San Antonio Missions National Historic Park and the Spanish Governor’s Palace. The museums, such as the San Antonio Museum of Art, are also not to be missed. This city also makes for a great family vacation -- with educational and adrenaline-pumping fun. SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas will thrill both you and the little ones. And no city tour would be complete without a stroll down the River Walk, a three-mile-long path along the San Antonio River, which hits many attractions. From the Missions to the Hill Country, San Antonio offers so many things for visitors to see and do, ranging from major theme parks to the River Walk lined with restaurants, patios, galleries and shops. The city is filled with culturally significant arts, history, and museums.
Nashville, Tennessee Country music’s capital is perfect for the whole family. There are plenty of things to do in Nashville -- the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Ryman Auditorium, for starters. With so many Nashville attractions, you’ll be happy to know that Nashville hotels are world-class, too. If you’re a Country music fan, mark your calendars for June 5-8th as it’s the CMA Music Festival. Four days of Country music talent, autograph sessions, great food and shopping. What more could you ask for? Don’t forget to tour the Grand Ole Opry and mall that are so famously known for rich entertainment and history and food. The downtown area of Nashville features a diverse assortment of entertainment, dining, cultural and architectural attractions. When traveling to Nashville in the summer, the weather can get a bit humid. Make sure to bring an umbrella for those last minute summer down pours that sometimes come in the late afternoon and evenings. It keep this beautiful state green.
Salt Lake City, Utah Disarmingly pleasant and easygoing, Salt Lake City is well worth a vacation stop. Its setting is superb, towered over by the Wasatch Front. The area offers great hiking and cycling in summer and fall and, in winter, some of the world’s best skiing. Its unhurried pace, and the positive energy of its people, can make for a surprisingly enjoyable experience. Mark your calendars for July in Salt Lake City. It’s the state’s official holiday as the pioneer founders discovered it on July 24, 1847. The Day’s of ‘47 celebration includes a parade, fireworks and a rodeo which lasts a good week! This rodeo is one of the finest in the nation. Don’t forget to experience the peace and tranquility of beautiful Temple Square with a complimentary tour of Utah’s most visited attraction. This historical temple built by the Mormons took 40 years to build . Tours of the beautifully landscaped 10-acre property are available in 40 languages.

Horse Training By Dana Hokana
Develop a Solid Foundation While Starting Your Colt (Part 2) The First Thirty Days of Riding and Five Basic Skills
N
ow that you have layered a good foundation with your young horse on the ground and put your first couple of rides on him, you are ready to go on to establishing a good riding foundation. I am going to outline foundational principles that I feel are important to you and your horse. These will help you make your horse into the willing partner you want him to be. As I talked about in Part 1, remember that every horse is an individual and you will need to evaluate your horse’s personality in order to decide how demanding you want to be and how fast you are going to go. As we learned, every horse is also an individual in their temperament. They are also unique in their level of maturity and individual strength. Some colts are weaker or immature and less able to handle the rider’s weight, while to others it is no big deal. Be very mindful about how fast you go with your colt and consider all these factors. I also try to keep their workout short as they are still growing. They are like a teenage kid! I want my horses to last and stay sound a long time. If I have any 56 | Cowgirls In Style | spring/summer 2014
doubts as to the strength or maturity of a colt, I have my veterinarian evaluate him to see if he’s ready to start. I also recommend that if you are starting a smaller or immature colt, don’t put too heavy a rider on him. Take care of him and he’ll last a long time! I try to build my colt’s confidence in each ride. I also try to get a “win,” so to speak, or end on a positive note if at all possible. This helps to instill confidence in him. I also warm up and cool down before and after each ride as this helps reduce injuries and also helps the colt to start and end each workout relaxed. On most colts that I start, we work or ride them 3 or 4 times a week. If I have a colt that is unusually broncy or afraid, I may work him everyday until I have a break-through and he becomes accepting of this work. I feel that there is nothing wrong with going slowly, as my goal is to develop the long-term horse. Most of the time, I don’t ask for a headset in the first 30 days as I want my horse to learn to carry the weight of the rider comfortably and balanced and to learn some basic skills. Remember, build on each skill level. My goal is to teach all the horses I ride to enjoy their job and to try for me. Horses often learn by the reward so if I can practice a concept until the horse gets it, then I can give him a clear reward. They like to feel the reward. Then, when I go on to the next skill they have “learned how to learn” so to speak:
SKILL LEVELS 1 Go Forward Willingly The first and most important concept your horse needs to learn is to go forward willingly. I teach my horses to respond to my leg cues as well as to my voice cues. When I am doing ground work, lunging and driving, I make a point of teaching my horse to go forward off my voice cue. Now, as I’m starting to ride the colt, I have my voice cue as a back up. So when I ask my horse to go forward for the first time, I cluck or kiss as well as use my legs. Most of the time, the colt will go forward. If he refuses, I have the handler at his head lead him forward. I also may smack him with my rein although if he is really jumpy, be ready for he may react strongly to that. Since I start my colts in a round corral, if they get to much forward motion or take off with me, I have an easier time getting them stopped, but this almost never happens as I’ve put a lot of time into lunging, driving and gentling. Ninety percent of the time the first few rides are no problem. I will practice over and over teaching my horse to go forward until he is comfortable and its no big deal. 2. Establish Your Whoa Cue The whoa cue is extremely important for control and safety with your horse. After my horse has learned to go forward willingly, I establish the “whoa cue”. My young horses have had a lot of practice in this as they have learned it while being driven. I still practice it until I am confident that my horse will respond and stop each time I ask him to. My direction of pull will be different than when I am driving so some horses will act confused when I first ask them to stop. I reinforce this by pulling back on the reins, saying “whoa” and as soon as I feel his feet stop moving, I release. Some people release the cue as soon as the feet slow down, but I like to release as soon as his feet stop moving. As soon as he stops quickly and easily, I am ready to teach him the back-up. 3 The Back-Up To teach my horse the back-up, I will walk him forward (so that his shoulders are free and moving) and stop him. I will them release my pull. Following this, I will pick back up and pull back on my reins. He will often act confused and hesitate for a moments but I will continue my pull until he takes even one step backward. If he acts confused and takes a long time to respond, I will look for any understanding such as a shift backward in his body weight. Then I will release. He looks for the reward and the release is the reward, so I want to get to that place as quickly as I can. I will then walk forward, stop, release, and ask again. As soon as I feel him even shift his body weight, I will release as a reward. This works 90 percent of the time. You can build on this a step at a time. If he refuses and you can’t get even a step, then walk him forward, stop and pull his head to one side and get him to take a step to unlock his shoulders, then ask again. If you still can’t get him to back up, go back to the driving lines and perfect this skill. 4. Teach Your Horse To Follow His Nose This skill is the basis for all turning and, as elementary as is sounds, I use this exercise of following the nose in my older broke horses to identify several things, such as if they are tracking up to their face and not leaning or drifting out. It will also
tell me where my horse’s energy flow is going. But, in the young green babies, I need to add to their knowledge the basic maneuver of turning and walking forward. I will use a direct pull with my hand out to the side and encourage my horse forward. Remember, you open a space with your hands, so give a clear message by pulling your hand out to the side and encouraging your horse forward. I also will give or release my cue as soon as my horse takes a few steps in the new direction. As I build on this, I can guide or direct my horse with my hands and cue my horse with my legs and be able to have my horse complete a full circle. This is the first skill that I have taught my horse where he has to be held or cued in the face while going forward off my leg. That is a baby step toward collection. I reward or release him often in the beginning and then require more and more steps out of him as he begins to understand me. 5. Move Over Off My Leg Up to this point, your horse understands go forward off your leg. Now we need to add to that and teach him to move over off your leg. I do not begin to ask for this until my horse is walking, trotting and loping forward, stopping and backing and turning with ease. I will teach him to move over off my leg by turning his head. I will then cluck or kiss and cue with the one leg only while holding contact on the one side of his face. As soon as he takes one step over, I will release my hand and leg cue as his reward. If he gets worried or resists me a lot before he takes a step, I will go forward. I may even trot him again until I get a step, then release for the reward. I will build on this until I can get my horse to move over willingly off my leg. With these maneuvers, my horse has the foundation to do roll backs, side passes, turns on the haunches, and perform turns on the forehand. Be clear in your cues, work on each side of his body equally unless you have a stiff spot and then you may need to work longer on that area. And remember, they learn by the reward. Also remember that they go through two levels of learning in a particular concept or skill. First is to acquire knowledge of the concept. Second is to acquire acceptance of it. I will leave the round corral and go to the arena after my horse is quiet, willing and understand these concepts and I feel I have good control of him. Pay attention to the small details and you will make your horse into an excellent, willing young prospect.

Larisa Afffeldt talks to CIS about her love of the world of Quarter Horses, the importance of family and how she met her husband, Jeremy Affeldt, Major League Baseball pitcher to the San Francisco Giants. Cowgirls In Style: Where are you from? Larisa Affeldt: I am originally from Spokane Washington...I did get my degree in interior design but haven’t really used it much. I like to tell people I am actually a professional “Mover and Packer” because we have moved 3x a year for baseball since we were married in 1999. We make our home and spend our off seasons (October -January) in Spokane, Washington were we met at Northwest Christian High school. Both of our families still live there. But then we also live in Scottsdale for spring training (February-March) and then in San Francisco for baseball season (April-September). CIS: How did you get started with horses? LA: I got my first horse when I was 8 and started out showing 4-H then open, Appaloosa, Buckskin then finally settled on AQHA. I had a handful of horses growing up but my last youth horse was my favorite. “Critical Element” out of “Zippos old Gold” we showed the all around events but did the best in the western pleasure and horsemanship. My trainer growing up, Cliff Kelmer, of post falls, ID really taught me how to show, and ride. I still respect him so much. He is a great trainer and now AQHA Judge. My last year showing “LeRoy” as a youth was in 1998 and we hauled him to the AQHA OHIO Congress. I ended up making the first cut in both the pleasure and horsemanship. We just missed the finals but I was just so happy
to hear my number called at all. It was such a great experience, I am really excited to get back to showing at that level again. Also about that time (1997) I had started dating my husband who was being scouted by MLB scouts. He got drafted in the 3rd round of the 1997 baseball draft. And I did end up selling my gelding shortly after the congress and using the money to help get my husband and I through the tuff minor league years... CIS: Tell us a little bit about your family? LA: I have always known I was going to come back to showing I was just waiting for the right time. We now have 3 boys Walker (6) Logan (3) and Kolt (1) . So between having babies, moving and baseball I wasn’t sure how I was going to find my way back to horses. But then someone I knew told me about David and Cheryl Busick I recognized the name right away from my time showing as a kid and when I found out there barn wasn’t far from were we were living in California I called Cheryl and went out to ride. After that ride I swear I had a smile plastered on my face for a week. It had been too long and I was ready to be back. I love AQHA, the horses, the organization and the people. When I am at the barn in the saddle or at the shows, I it’s my time, something I am doing for me that I LOVE. I love to compete. And I love to challenge myself. After the 2012 World Series, My husband had been apart of winning 2 world championships in 3 years with the SF Giants. Our contract was up and we had no idea what the future held for us. In my mind I had us moving east like to NY or Boston! But we ended up renegotiating another 3 year deal with the Giants and as soon as I knew we were staying in California I called Cheryl and told her we needed to start looking for a horse for me! The first horse I bought this year has been my project horse. His name is “Bonanza Sweet Gold” he is an 8 year old black gelding out of “Sweet Talking Chip” my goal with him this year was to get our 20 judges in and get to the Novice Championship show in Vegas. I was actually shocked to learn this year with the rule changes I would be eligible for the novice show again! But being out of the show ring for 10+ years I was so excited about it! We made the finals in every class I showed him in. 13th in showmanship. 11th in horsemanship and 10th in the pleasure. I had a great time and can’t wait to go back next year! CIS: How did you and your husband meet? Do your schedules work out so that you can see his games and he can see you compete? LA: Jeremy and I met in High school. We started dating when we were just 16 years old. He would come watch me show as a youth and cheer me on he knew horses would always be a part of my life just like I knew baseball and a career moving around would be part of his. We have made it work and for many years! We go to a lot of baseball games I have been to more than I could ever count or keep track of. to hear my number called at all. It was such a great experi162 There are regular season games every year...and we don’t go to all of them but a lot! During his off season he is able to come to some of the horse shows. But While I am gone showing it is also nice that he can stay home with the boys and keep them going on there regular routine of school and naps! spring/summer 2014 | www.CowgirlsInStyle.com

CIS: How many horses do you own? LA: WE currently own 3 horses. I have my two that I show and have I have one for the boys to learn on...they named her “Penny Princess Pony”, she is actually a small horse though measuring right at 14.2HH she lives right in our backyard in California all summer which is so fun for them! I am also trying to breed my mare this year using the embryo transfer so the baby will actually be carried by a recipient mare. We are still waiting to see if that process is going to work but hope to have a new baby on the ground next year about this time if it does! The stud I bred her to is “Only in the Moonlite” and I am so excited and hopeful that this is going to work! CIS: You have comeback to the show arena this year after a ten year hiatus. Tell us about that. LA: I had been looking for just the right show horse to get me back out in the competitive world of AQHA I really wanted something that could do the western riding and had a great lead change. I also wanted something I could turn into a great all around horse. Steve Medows had a mare “UF Certainly a Priss” back east and David told me he thought I needed to go ride her. I flew out to NC where she was being shown at the Little Futurity show in Raleigh. She had had a great run in the all age open western riding class that day. What got my attention was that “Prissilla” ended up placing 2nd behind a well known horse by just a 1/2 a point. I rode her that day and felt like she might just be the coolest horse I had ever had the opportunity to ride. She is a young horse with so much potential to mature into an amazing All around horse! I have only shown her a couple times. But am looking forward to showing her this year! It will be a learning year for both of us. I would love to take her back to the Novice Championship show this
year and then onto Congress. But for now we are going to take it one show at a time. CIS: What is your fashion style? LA: My fashion style is pretty classic with a slight rocker edge. I love the Spikes and crosses, and I do have a couple meaningful tattoos that I love. The one on my wrist says “ETERNITY” which is a great reminder for me to stay focused on what matters in life. I want to focus my time and energy on. Being a good mom, loving my kids, being a supportive wife and thinking of others above myself. We have a family motto in our house “love your neighbor as yourself” and simply put I want to do that well, i want to have a quick smile for strangers and an encouraging word or compliment. My husband and I have an organization called “Generation Alive” it is based out of Spokane where we live in the off season and we focus on empowering the youth in our community to think of others. We are often at an event packaging meals for the hungry or speaking to high schools about the ways they can make a difference in the world around them. CIS: What are your goals for the future? LA: I want to keep living life. Balancing everything as best as I can between my family and baseball and horses and my relationships with friends and family. I want to be the best I can in all areas and hopefully that includes a couple trips into the winners circle at some of the shows I am competing at. I would love to get my own World Championship one day, My husband has 2 world Series rings, and if I’m being honest I would like to add my own World Champion buckle to that. I am in no hurry to get there though, I just want to enjoy each ride and each moment to make that dream a reality.
The Western Wanderer Wandering Into Oatman, Arizona Written By: Cort Flynn
This old town full of buildings of yesteryear is not a dead ghost town but full of life and energy of the old west including bank robberies, shoot-outs, hold-ups, and more several times a day.
O
n old Route 66 (America’s highway) not far east of the border town of Bullhead City lies the mining town of Oatman. This old town full of buildings of yesteryear is not a dead ghost town but full of life and energy--energy of the old west including bank robberies, shoot-outs, hold-ups, and more several times a day. We even saw a tour bus stopped by desperadoes and its tourists made to disembark the bus and subjected to the whims of the gun-toting cowboys. All in fun of course!
62 | Cowgirls In Style | Spring/Summer 2014
The town was named after a young girl, Olive Oatman, who was kidnapped by Yavapai Indians This town’s old buildings are full of shops with all kinds of fun, from antiques to an old fashioned ice cream parlor and fudge counter. You can see the old jail and walk through an old mine. The miners of old used burros to help in the mine work. Those burro’s descendants are now wild and roam the area. In the morning they wander into town and down the streets looking for hand-outs from the tourists. You can buy carrots or other feed from locals and handfeed the little guys. It was a hoot! For lunch stop in at the old Oatman Hotel. Its walls are lined with hundreds, maybe thousands of dollar bills and try one of their giant western burgers or other sandwiches and listen to a live western singer or band. By the way, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon night in 1839 in this old hotel. Another very interesting thing about this town comes from its name. It was named after a young girl, Olive Oatman, who was kidnapped by Yavapai Indians along with her sister. It seems a brother survived the attack by playing dead. The younger sister died in captivity with the Indians. Later, Olive was sold to the Mohave Indians and treated as one of the tribe. Her face was tattooed by the Mohave as was the custom with many of the tribes women. The tattoo is quite unusual and gives the appearance of a bearded chin. She was later released by the the Indians to the US Calvary near Oatman, thus the name. If you go, make your base in Laughlin, Nevada just across the Colorado River from Bullhead City. It is a fun little gambling town with nice hotels and bargain rates. They overlook the crystal clear river and offer boat rides up and down and a beautiful river walk all enjoyed in a warm mild climate in the winter. Well, till we meet along the skyline of the western slope...
