OUR SALE

Welcome to our 22nd annual bull sale. We have now held the Reid Angus Heat Seeker Bull Sale for the past nine years in Brooks. This year for the first time, at Bow Slope Shipping Association. After 28 years in the purebred Angus business we realize that “Good enough never is.” We are constantly adapting our management and breeding programs to satisfy our dedicated customer’s needs. We ask ourselves on a daily basis how can we be better? We truly believe “Females are our Foundation” Their sons will contribute to your bottom line.

After weaning, the bulls are started, here at home on free choice hay and are hand fed 3 lbs/hd of 12% textured ration for 6 weeks. This ensures that they are quiet, good-natured and there are no temperament issues. In mid October they are moved to the back grounding lot at Bassano where they receive a high roughage totally mised ration until sale day on March 14.

Each year we select 20 yearling bulls that will become our two year olds in next year‘s sale. After wintering at the back grounding lot with the yearling sale bulls they are brought home and put out on summer grass. At the end of October they are brought home and go on feed. Free choice hay and a maximum of 12 lbs/hd/day of 12% textured ration. These coming 2 yr olds are hand fed their grain ration, so we are in with them twice a day, everyday. Temperament is not an issue. These bulls are not pushed, they are developed. We are simply trying to support the bulls structural development as he builds bone and muscle.

All the bulls are semen tested and Vet inspected prior to the sale. Reid Angus and SR Angus bulls come with a buyer satisfaction guarantee. The Reid Angus and SR Angus herds are run and managed together. We are fortunate to have Cole, Sara, Grady and Weston involved. Their help makes a difference for all of us.

Many great cattlemen will tell you to buy a bull based on his mother. Well Limit Ups mother has done it consistently. In our “Heat Seeker 2017 Bull Sale” 66 Ranch purchased an OCC Legacy son out of RA Milne 60A. In 2018 Spring Coulee Ranch purchased the high seller out of RA Lady Milne 60A a SAV Harvestor son. In 2019 she produced this remarkable SAV Regard son, R A Limit Up 6F. She raised three outstanding herd Bulls, three years in a row out of three different sires. In 2020, she raised twins and weaned off a total of 1565 pounds that’s more than she weighs. She calves in the first cycle every year and she did it again this year even while raising twins we will be using 6F heavier in the future. We have been very impressed by the power, performance and structural correctness he puts in his offspring.

Payweight is a 10 yr old Bull that breeders have rediscovered. He has been one of the highest demand sires for more than a decade and with the recent reduction in his semen price and the increased availability he has seen renewed interest in use across the beef industry. His sons have topped bull sales across the nation for the past four years and few calving ease bulls in Angus history have ever offered the body mass and depth that is a trademark of Payweight and his progeny. Payweight females display his depth of body and his easy fleshing ability, with a nice udder structure and a brood cow look. His daughters have topped Angus sales across the continent. Attractive is exactly that; he demonstrates moderate birthweight but has the ability to build broad topped, deep sided Bulls, that have added growth and are set on a solid, well structured foot. The results of breeding to Attractive are so compelling that it is hard to stray away from what he contributes to a program. Black gold has proven himself as a calving ease sire with growth and shape in one eye pleasing package. Check out his Canadian Angus EPD‘s : calving ease +12, BW -0.9 WW+75 YW +124 and this is on 511 progeny analyzed. We have always been impressed with Black Gold’s post weaning growth. Out of a Connelly Right Answer dam, it was her udder quality & foot structure that really attracted us to this Bull. Some breeders have expressed concern about Black Gold’s sons & daughters temperament - we have not experienced any of that. In fact we find his progeny very easy to work with.

This guys mama did a tremendous job raising her first calf. Although he was 91 lbs at birth he was born unassisted. We are very impressed with the calving ease of Rainfall and the job this heifer did. She weaned Downpour at 730 lbs and he has continued to make steady progress on his high roughage growing ration. As you can see in his pair picture he has always been deep sided and has a sogginess that he is growing into.

Storm Warning has a moderate BW of 91 lbs but is out of the calving ease sire Rainfall & an OCC Legacy dam. I would confidently recommend using him on heifers. The average BW of all Rainfall progeny is 77 lbs and the aver. BW on all OCC Legacy progeny is 82 lbs. These sires CED & CEM EPD’s reflect more accurately that you can use him on heifers. That actual BW # will change a lot in the last trimester depending on how the dam is fed. This guy had lots of get up & grow with a 780 lb WW & a 1,231 lb YW. Quarterback’s sire SAV Rainfall is known as a calving ease sire that improves CED & BW EPD’s. Quarterback’s dam is an SAV Regard daughter and she has a 91 lb BW. Quarterback was born unassisted from this first calf heifer and came in at 102 lbs. There are a few things to remember here, our females must be in good shape to calve in January and February....it is a long way from these winter months to summer grass. We start rebreeding at the beginning of April. Our cows carry good condition and that will be reflected in heavier birth weights. Our weights are honest & accurate. Please also remember there is as much variation within breeds as there is between breeds. I’m just trying to be honest & accurate.

This is our 9th Annual Heat Seeker Bull Sale. We would like to thank all of our previous customers who have supported us and bought our bulls in the past. We hope you are happy with your bulls and the calves that you have on the ground. Our bulls are being fed again at Retzlaff’s on a silage ration near Bassano. We are happy with how the bulls have come along and are gaining. We do not push our bulls. We know that it’s not great for them later on and we recognize that the first thing that is affected is feet, which is a very valuable and important function to bulls that need to get out and travel and work for the customer. We are all about raising Working bulls for the commercial producer. We strive to use new genetics and stay on trend when raising bulls to suit the customer. When picking sires we try to use bulls who carry moderate fleshing, who are deep, long, well muscled and travel well. We use sires who will compliment and strengthen our cow herd and that we have seen some progeny out of. We have a few bulls this year in the sale and look forward to seeing all of our friends and customers on sale day please join us at BOW SLOPE SHIPPING @ 1pm lunch will be served and we hope you will stay for a drink and a visit after. Feeding Program for Two-Year Old Bulls

Our two-year-old bulls are developed on a dry growing program. The bulls do not receive more than 12 lbs/hd/day of a textured grain ration and free choice grass hay. That’s it. We are imply trying to support the bull’s structural development as he builds bone and muscle. We want them to carry moderate flesh and be athletic.

Pleaser is exactly that. You will like what you see. Out of a moderate frame cow that is just working her way into the herd. I think you will be pleased with what this OCC legacy daughter produced. These 6F sons went off heavy and have good post winning growth.

We have really been impressed by the calves sired by All In 81G. 81G sold in our 2021 Sale to Brad Betcker of T Bar Cattle Co. We collected a little semen on 81G before the sale. I think you’ll like what they offer. These Bruns Blaster sons and grandsons offer a very consistent type. Unfortunately there is no semen available in Canada believe me I know, I have tried. These have now become limited editions. “Gretzky” is very attractive, smooth made Bull. He ranks in the top of the pen. I think you will like what he has to offer.

Another 81G son out of a SAV Regard dam. A moderate BW bull at 92 lbs that has developed nicely for a early March born bull. A good yearling wt for Bulls that are not pushed, but developed. Remember these 2 yr old Bulls are on nothing but summer grass until October and then go on free choice hay diet that is supplemented with no more than 12 lbs/hd of textured ration. We want these bulls to demonstrate their natural fleshing ability.

Insurance: Each animal becomes risk of the purchaser when the auctioneer’s hammer falls. Insurance will be available for purchase on sale day.

Cattle Inspection: The bulls are available for your inspection prior to the sale. All carry permanent identity tags that corres-pond to the Sale Lot numbers.

Semen Rights: Reid Angus reserves the right to collect semen on any bull sold through this sale. This is for Reid Angus in herd use only. Semen will be collected at Reid Angus’ expense & done at the buyers convenience.
