W.E Coy Automotive Engineers Queens Gate Mews London SW 1922 Welcome to our review of 2015, which globally is accepted as being another solid year in the historic car world, with some great collections sold and notable prices being achieved in an active marketplace. The international players in the marketplace such as Coys, Bonhams and RM Sotheby’s have all continued to enjoy positive results in 2015, and this is an indication of how embedded the historic car market is in the lifestyle culture of the 21st Century. Our own calendar of events was impressive and International, with UK auctions in London, Blenheim Palace, the NEC and Ascot, with International sales in Essen, the Nurburgring, and a groundbreaking new auction at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Our events team were also busy, as you will see in these pages, throughout 2015, with a number of motorsport and charity events supported by Coys throughout the UK and Europe. As you read this review, I hope that you too will reflect back with us on what an interesting and adventurous year 2015 was.

Coys at Autosport
January 2015 saw the Coys team already hard at work when many still had their Christmas decorations up at home. The Autosport auction 2015 saw the successful sale of a great selection of cars, including everything from 1 1948 Fiat 1100S Mille Miglia car, through to a 1967 Volkswagen split-screen camper which had come originally from the collection of legendary American blues artist Seasick Steve. The sale was also filmed as a significant feature for the Channel 4 television program, For the Love of Cars.

Widely accepted now as the most important and relevant motorsports and associated industry show in the world, Autosport International, The Racing Car show, is a sporting enthusiast’s dream event, with a huge variety of displays and content, both historic and modern. The initial trade days on the Thursday and Friday boast hundreds of millions of pounds worth of motosport business, and Coys are proud to be closely associated with the event.

On the same weekend as Autosport, Coys were delighted to have been exclusively appointed to handle the sale of honoured Soviet sportsman and Eastern European sporting legend Stasys Brundza. The collection was offered entirely at no reserve, which saw the auction room in Maastricht filled to the rafters. It is always an event when a single owner collection of such volume comes to the market, and with everything from Aston Martins to Zills, the collection was broad and exciting.

Interclassics & Topmobiel
Now rated amongst the leading highend boutique classic motor shows in Europe, Interclassics & Topmobiel, held in the charming and picturesque Dutch city of Maastricht, is a very popular season-opening event for classic and historic collectors on the continent of Europe. As can be seen from the photographs included here, the content and displays at Maastricht are second to none.

Coys have been a regular feature and contributor on the Sky TV programme “Auction�, which showcases important and historic items being sold by the major players in the auction business worldwide. Amongst a number of cars which the programme featured at Coys was the famous 1964 Bentley S3 saloon, sold new to none other than Beatles manager Brian Epstein.

In its inaugural year, the London Classic Car show, held at Excel in the vastly renovated old London Docklands, was widely accepted as being a great success, with a combination of live-action elements and very high quality cars on display. Coys were delighted to feature a Rolls-Royce 20/15 by HJ Mulliner, a Type 57 Bugatti Ventoux, and a stunning Ferrari Daytona Spyder, as well as demonstrating a 300SL Gullwing in the live-action feature.

Established in 1936, the Bentley Drivers Club is one of the longest established and most highly regarded motoring clubs in the world, and we were delighted to display at the annual Club event. Coys featured a wonderful 1934 Bentley 3.5 Litre Oxborrow & Fuller Continental by Vanden Plas. This extremely rare and desirable Derby Bentley was later sold though our long established showrooms.

For the second year in a row and for Series 2, Coys were delighted to feature in the very successful Channel 4 programme “For The Love of Cars�, featuring Ant Anstead and Phil Glennister. Each episode of the seven-episode series focused on the sale of one of the cars restored by the team and then sold through Coys at Autosport International.

Our Spring Classics auction in March, held at our traditional central London venue, the Royal Horticultural Halls in Westminster, and already our third auction of the year, set a good tone for the year ahead, with noticeable sales such as the last Aston Martin DBS ever built through to a 1913 RollsRoyce Silver Ghost and a 1955 Maserari OSCA Formula Junior.

The Club remains not only one of the most exclusive Ferrari clubs in the world, but equally one of the few independent singlemarque clubs left without factory association. This strength and independence gives the Club a unique quality and feel, and the events it hosts are always to an exceptional standard.

Our first visit to Ascot, one of our regular venues, was complimented with a very high quality catalogue, including a rare Veritas RS, a Maserati 3500 GT competition car, a Riley Imp, and an untouched timewarp Lotus 11, amongst a number of other desirable classics.

The inaugural Classic & Sportscar: The London Show took place in October, and Coys were delighted to participate and we displayed a wonderful Bugatti Type 30, an AC Cobra, and a superb 3-Litre Bentley with original coachwork by Vanden Plas. The show was very well attended, with a number of specialist dealers securing successful sales, indeed, Coys saw the sale of the AC Cobra completed at the event.

Milan Autoclassica
Coys Italia has always exhibited at Autoclassica in Milan, and are one of the founding exhibitors in the event. Italian classic car culture is no stranger to events of this type. However, with the event being held in one of the most stylish cities in the world, the quality of Milan Autoclassica is second to none.

As part of our ongoing charity commitments and close associations with the Franshhoek Motor Museum, we were delighted to support the Forest Fire Awareness day in Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape, which saw the Museum displaying a selection of classic firefighting and emergency services vehicles from the collection.

Further charity work was on behalf of the Pink Ribbon Foundation, with an auction of fine art and sculpture at the Mandarin Hyde Park Hotel on a magnificent and warm summer’s evening, attended by many of the great and good from the London art world.

Techno Classica Essen Always one of the most important and well-attended auctions of the Coys year, our Techno Classica sale boasted a fantastic catalogue, including a BMW 328 and a BMW M1, a 300SL Gullwing Mercedes, a Maserati Ghibli and a Porsche 959, with excellent results across the board.

Long considered the greatest show in Europe for its breadth and depth of quality content and significant manufacturer’s involvement, the Essen show, even after so many years at the top of its game, continues to grow and develop, and as any visitor will now tell you, one day at the show is not enough to see everything.

As the auctioneers for the Zoom charity for Great Ormond Street, Coys were part of a star-studded event full of celebrities and the stars of Formula 1 for an auction of exclusive and unique framed photographs taken by the drivers and team principals of Fomula 1. During the course of the evening, hosted by Suzi Perry, a number of notable guest Coys auctioneers took to the rostrum.

Throughout the course of 2015, Coys continued to handle the sale of automobilia and associated collectibles throughout our sales. Automobilia auctions took place at Autosport, where there is always a motorsport associated flavour, along with sales at Ascot and Blenheim, with a number of important singleowner collections being succesfully sold by Coys.

A regular and leading event in Coys international calendar is Vernasca Silver Flag, one of the leading historic motorsport events in Europe and the world. This year saw hundreds of competing cars of every year and type entered into the event and tackling the famous hill climb. The 2015 event experience was augmented by a new driver’s hospitality facility at the top of the hill climb.

Celebrating the first post-war Grand Prix in Italy, Coys were delighted to be the lead supporter of the Piacenza Grand Prix Revival in May, which saw the streets yet again full with the sights and sounds of late pre and early post-war racing cars competing on its streets.

Now established as one of the most significant auctions held in Europe, Blenheim Palace enjoyed remarkable results, not only in sale rate but in prices achieved as well, and Coys guests at the event enjoyed a beautiful warm day in the sunshine, with the cars all selling easily. Feature highlights include the Ferrari Daytona Chassis No 1, alongside the Turin Motor Show Gullwing Mercedes, and the main hero car from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen starring Sean Connery.

HRDC Donington
Coys were delighted with an invitation from our colleagues at the HRDC to support their ingenious celebration of the British Touring Car Championship, with a fantastic and varied grid of historic touring saloons competing for the Coys trophy. The event took place as one of the leading race events at the Donington Classic event, held at Donington Park in Derbyshire, and we are pleased to say boasted the largest grid of any of the races in the event.

A long-standing feature of the Coys auction calendar is our sale held every year at the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. As is now traditional with this event, the auction was standing room only and catalogues sold our hours before the auction started. Highlights included a world record price for a Ferrari F40, alongside the sale of an original BMW 328 and one of the feature film cars from the now-legendary Formula 1 film Rush, directed by Ron Howard.

The 43rd Oldtimer GP
August saw the grandfather of all European historic events in full swing, with the 42nd Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in the Eifel Mountains in Germany. This magnificent pre-war circuit, which boasts both the modern Grand Prix circuit and the celebrated Nordschleife hosted varied and competitive historic motorsport on both these classic tracks.

Classics at the Castle
We were delighted to work alongside the organisers of Classics at the Castle at Castle Hedingham in East England, where one of the most exclusive early Porsche events in the world is held every year. The Coys auction focused on pre-1974 and other types, and held against the backdrop of one of the finest preserved Norman keeps in Europe was a special and magical event.

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Panamericana, Coys were delighted to celebrate alongside the guests at the event at Castle Hedingham. Attendees included Porsche Legends Jurgen Barth and “Quick Vic” Elford, alongside television personality Matt “Joey from Friends” LeBlanc.

Unquestionably one of the most important modern motor shows in the world, Coys were delighted to hold the feature classic auction at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Feature consignments included a very rare Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight, and Eva Gardner’s Facel Vega.

A remarkable event just in the sheer scale of the number of visitors, which is in excess of 1.2 million each year. All the major motor manufacturers on Earth were represented, with Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Mercedes effectively in their own buildings.

The traditional True Greats auction, held in early December at the Royal Horticultural Halls is now in its fourth decade, is now the oldest auction of its type in London, for which we are justly proud. Features included a 4.5 Litre Supercharged Bentley Blower and the James Bond Q Boat from The World Is Not Enough.
