I have always believed in “together”… Together, we envision success and we take steps to achieve it. Makedonia Palace is not just a hotel; it is a living, breathing organism, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All of us who work here share a common philosophy and walk the same path – the one that leads with certainty to the top! We have earned the distinction of the top hotel of the year, having been awarded gold prizes at the Greek Hospitality Awards 2018 in the categories of “Top Greek Hotel 2018”, “Best Greek Business City Hotel” and “Best Greek Hotel Dining Experience”, standing out from among 149 hotels and hospitality businesses for the innovative and creative solutions we have adopted in the hospitality sector and in our operation. For all of us, these distinctions are the culmination of our efforts, but also another motive to keep getting better. As the top Greek hotel, we continue to offer new and substantial experiences that keep raising the bar; our guiding principle is innovation at every level. But above all, we do not think selfishly; through our efforts, we try to promote the city of Thessaloniki as a top destination on the world tourism map. The people of Thessaloniki welcomed Qatar Airways, which has launched a new service connecting Thessaloniki with Doha. The airline company hosted a gala dinner at Makedonia Palace, impressing its guests with the impeccable organization. Furthermore, as with every important event that takes place in Thessaloniki, the hotel was at the center of interest and played an important part in the effort to bring to the city the 4th MCE South Europe forum, which will be

held for the first time in Greece on October 21-23, 2018. Having this forum in Thessaloniki is a unique opportunity to highlight the city as a destination, with meetings with over 100 buyers from around the world and a series of parallel events all being held at the refurbished conference halls of Makedonia Palace hotel. Above all, we know who we are and what we can offer. And that is exactly what we want everyone to know! Success has value only when it is shared. And we, as a small “culture”, continue to share everything that drives us to the top, with the promise to continue, every day, to give new meaning to “together”.

Sincerely, Alkiviadis Sotiriou General Manager

ELENI ARGYRIADOU Human Resources Manager

ΑLWAYS ON DUTY! >>> To know us better Eleni Argyriadou comes from Ptolemaida; she was raised in Veroia at the wish of her educator parents, and ended up in Thessaloniki where she came to study Law at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She joined the staff of Makedonia Palace in 2001, in the HR Department, and became the hotel’s Human Resources Manager in 2006.

>>> Τhe duties Ms. Argyriadou’s work includes everything related to the hotel’s human resources. From selecting and hiring new staff to monitoring their progress, wages, benefits, and continuous training. As the name suggests, HR is all about people and managing the hotel’s human resources.

18 | THEA MAGAZINE

>>> The hard and the fun part The hardest part of Ms. Argyriadou’s job ensues from the difficulties inherent in human relations. “The difficulties present in human relations are the same we deal with in our work, ” she explains. “The difficulty lies in managing the diversity of people, because in a hotel with a minimum staff of 200 you will encounter people from different countries, with different backgrounds and personalities. And it makes sense that, the more people there, the harder it is to manage them, especially because of this diversity. Furthermore, it is not always easy to convey to this mosaic of different individuals a unified company line, which everyone must comprehend and adopt.” Yet, the best part of her job is based on the exact same thing – i.e. on the fact that her job involves dealing with people and that, as she says, is extremely interesting. “For me personally, working with people is a joy, because it gives me strength and energy, and through them I am constantly learning new things.”

>>> Check list If you want to be a Human Resources manager, according to Ms. Argyriadou, you need to be open-minded, adaptable, and empathetic – to be able to walk in other people’s shoes and to find the balance between the administration and the staff. “Our department is the link that connects the hotel staff with its administration, with great care, confidentiality and discretion, ” she explains. You must also have the ability to discern the limits on both sides, in order to maintain balance. >>> Easy or not? Managing such a large number of employees in a hotel as large as Makedonia Palace is not hard, says Ms. Argyriadou. All you have to do is find the way! “It was hard in the beginning, when I started out 17 years ago. Back then, it was almost shocking to me that I had to manage all these people, and I often found myself on the verge of giving up. With patience, persistence, time and, eventually, experience you learn how to handle it all. You find the ways and procedures and from then on it is an enjoyable occupation.”

In regards to the hotel’s guests, Ms. Argyriadou believes that at Makedonia Palace they find the conditions that make them choose the hotel time and again for their stay. “We are essentially a services provision company, we do not offer our clients a product, ” she explains. “Our guests come into direct contact with us and they experience the warmth, care and hospitality of a true family. They feel that they are entering into a hospitable environment, where they are welcome and where we will do everything to guarantee them a good time, whether they are travelling for business or pleasure. Our staff is always alert, looking for ways to provide better services to our guests, and guests can sense that.” “After the renovation, my favorite spot in the hotel is the fireplace.

>>> The ideal cooperation “To accomplish your goals, you must have an excellent relationship and communication with your colleagues, ” says Ms. Argyriadou, discussing the ideal collaboration in her department, and explains: “For me, these people are the department heads. They are who I work with and with whom I need to have a good working relationship, so that I can communicate and implement what I want, as I do not personally come in contact with all 200 staff members. So through the department heads I learn about the staff and become closer to them. After all, my colleagues are also a part of the human resources I have to manage.” >>> Favourite spot >>> Why here? Although she has worked with other companies, Eleni Argyriadou has remained faithful to Makedonia Palace for many years, and she explains why. “I chose to stay here because this hotel is lovable! It is one big family. I love hotels in general, because I believe that they have the uniqueness of a living organism, where you must manage properly but at the same time have a loving relationship for everything to work all together. In hotels, nothing can work on its own. There is no department that does not collaborate with others. In every department there are links. If one thing doesn’t work, nothing will work, whether that is maintenance or administration. But Makedonia Palace especially is one big family; there is exceptional collaboration here that makes me never want to leave!”

“After the renovation, my favorite spot in the hotel is the fireplace. I really enjoy it because it combines everything. If you sit in that area, you have a view of the lobby and of the sea outside; you are in a calm environment where you can let your gaze wander over different vistas.” >>> Love to... Ms. Argyriadou’s time is evenly divided between her professional obligations and her large, beloved family! “I devote my free time to my large family, which includes my five children and two grandchildren, my second-eldest daughter’s twins, ” she explains, smiling. “Overall, I don’t have a lot of spare time, but one thing is for sure: whatever time I do have, there is nothing I would rather do than devote it exclusively to my family.” 20 | THEA MAGAZINE

DEPUTY MAYOR FOR TOURISM DEVELOPMENT & INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF THESSALONIKI Beyond being a politician, Spyros Pengas is primarily an active citizen, who fights daily to establish for the city of Thessaloniki the position it deserves on the global map. As Deputy Mayor for Tourism Development & International Relations, he talks about the Municipality’s initiatives and objectives, about local tourism awareness, and of how the city can become a hub of tourist and cultural interest.

Spyros Pengas You studied Political Science and International Relations at the Universities of Freiburg and Munich, and you have worked at the headquarters of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Brussels. To what extent did your experiences abroad, and the perhaps unavoidable comparisons with our country, influence your decision to enter politics? I would say to a very large extent. I did spend several years abroad, very formative years, between the ages of 18 and 24. The experience I gained, first through my studies in Political Science and subsequently through working at an international organization, actually resulted, upon my return, in me avoiding to become involved with politics, because I was unhappy with the restrictive framework imposed by political parties.

24 | THEA MAGAZINE

I considered it extremely hard for anyone to be able to rise and more importantly to be creative while operating outside party lines. When I encountered Yiannis Boutaris, a man with roots in civil society and in the business sector, just like me, I saw it as a window of opportunity. That is why I joined his campaign for mayor in 2016 and we have walked together ever since; because he showed me a different route for practicing politics, outside the party structure.

Starting in 2011, when you were appointed Deputy Mayor for Culture, Education & Tourism, and up to the present, from your current position as Deputy Mayor for Tourism Development & International Relations, do you believe that you have successfully contributed to a change in the city’s cultural and tourist profile? Has our city succeeded in earning a place on the global tourism map? Our city has definitely found a place on the global map of tourism destinations. The good thing about tourism is that its results are always measurable: we know exactly how many overnight stays and direct flight links we had in 2010, when our administration took over, and how many we have today. 2017 was the first year when, in the official counts of hotel units, foreign visitors outnumbered Greek guests, and it was also the first year when we had direct flight links through Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and others. When I travelled abroad in 2010-2011, my presentations started by explaining where Thessaloniki is located – most people thought it was an island. Today, it is a second-tier city, with recognition of what has been accomplished in recent years, and we have succeeded in bringing back our youth audience. 25 | THEA MAGAZINE

The first years were tough, because there was an effort to break with old mentalities and to show that culture is not the same as recreation. Opportunities and “openings” were granted to young people, establishing a creative think tank. After all, they are the ones who manage a lot of festivals and other activities and in events in the city. In 2011-2012 we started innovative actions, such as student sleepovers in museums, music concerts at monuments, the Urban Picnic Festival, etc., which continue to this day.

One of your main objectives was for Thessaloniki to become an educational hub for students from neighboring Balkan countries. Do you believe that the city’s education infrastructure is up to the challenge? What we have discovered in recent years in our travels through the Balkans is that there is a great love for Thessaloniki; it is why I believe that our city, together with Halkidiki, form the “California coast” of the Balkans that everyone wants to visit. There were already students from the Balkans in schools across the city, since in previous years there were a lot of scholarships granted. I discovered that there was a trend, which we succeeded in utilizing, by bringing together State universities and private schools – a collaboration that

is quite unusual for Greece – and other partners, such as owners of student studio housing, in order to drive forward the “Study in Thessaloniki” concept. Although there have been steps in the right direction, I am not fully satisfied; what impedes our effort is the overall statutory framework that is determined by the national government. We must first change this mindset, in order for Thessaloniki to become an important educational hub. The more we push, the more positive developments we will have.

Please comment on the Municipality’s intention to withdraw from the Thessaloniki Tourism Organization (TTO), a public entity. Are we talking about the slow death of public entities? Where do you identity potential mistakes? We have never strongly expressed our intention to withdraw, but as we have mentioned in the past, the city’s strategic plan must involve the majority of private-sector entities, something that occurs in the most dynamic cities abroad, where the public sector collaborates with the private sector but does not make decisions. That is the model that we want for Thessaloniki. Already we have established

the Thessaloniki Convention Bureau, which could become a vehicle for the city’s promotion. I consider the TTO model quite anachronistic, and it will never operate properly while there are political influences. Unfortunately, the public sector has adopted a purely accounting attitude, which is ineffective for Thessaloniki. We do not need one more forum for confrontation.

How do you assess the tourism awareness of the city’s residents? How could it be further developed, and through which initiatives are you aiming in this direction? My assessment of the level of local tourism awareness is very positive. In official measurements, the number one positive criterion is the friendliness of the locals. It was always a wager for the city, and the Municipal Authority worked hard in this direction, through municipal tours, foreign language lessons for Municipal employees, educational maps and many other

initiatives, which contributed to the public joining us in this process. Certainly, the experiential method is the best in developing tourism awareness – when the residents themselves encounter the positive effects of tourism.

Could the increased tourist flows from Turkey to Greece be considered a factor of stability in the relations between the two countries that are especially tense of late? What we have always said publicly and what interests us for the city is the harmonious relationship between the two peoples. We are interested in a Turkey that is democratic, free, open, because that is exactly what brings people here. We do not appreciate authoritarian tendencies, coups, and Sultan-like behaviors, because they are detrimental for the region at large and for the relations between the two countries. We are not interested in working at the highest political level. In our visits to Turkey, I have witnessed the people’s love

26 | THEA MAGAZINE

for Mr. Boutaris, for the desire he has expressed to strengthen the Greece-Turkey bond. We wish to study how the two peoples can come closer together. We are currently living through an exceptional situation with the two Greek military officers being held in Turkey, and this matter must be resolved immediately by our neighboring country. Finally, let us not forget that many Turkish families wish to stay here permanently, because they are unhappy about the political situation in their country.

What is the significance, in terms of development, of the accession of Thessaloniki to the “100 Resilient Cities” program, towards the goal of becoming a contemporary resilient city? I was fortunate to author the proposal myself, in 2014. My aim was primarily in the social sector, requesting that emphasis be placed on the disruption of the social fabric. I was more interested in social cohesion, as we had experienced instances of targeting of specific populations, high unemployment, and other significant issues. Subsequently, this became a more general plan for the rehabilitation of Thessaloniki, but we are somewhat “lost” in the studies and I fear that we may

get even more “lost”. At the same time, however, a lot of people are being educated in the significance of a city being sustainable/ resilient. There are conversations and chapters opening up that we had not discussed, and I wish these studies were more in synch with the reality and with political practice. The goal is to reposition Thessaloniki within a network of international interest and knowledge-exchange partnerships.

Spyros Pengas

The renovation of Makedonia Palace was a significant event for the city, and the hotel appears to have successfully established the definition of “luxury tourism”. In your opinion, what is the significance of the hotel’s presence in the city, as a landmark? As residents of Thessaloniki we identify Makedonia Palace as a city landmark, after the White Tower and the Umbrellas installation. The decision for the renovation was important and it created a domino effect, causing other hotels to enter into a positive competition and ultimately also renovate their facilities. We have been encouraging hoteliers to invest in their properties since 2013. Most of them heeded our advice and so we have

reached a point where there is interest by international investors. There are large funds and business groups interested in investing in our city. Makedonia Palace also helps in our own work; e.g. in our negotiations with Qatar Airways (the gala dinner was also held at the hotel), since our target was luxury tourism. That is precisely the path that Makedonia Palace has opened.

Throughout your involvement with municipal politics, and from various positions, has your vision for the city’s future remained the same? What are the challenges that Thessaloniki must face today? There is always a certain idealism and romantic outlook when you are first starting out, and you become different after the experience of coming up against reality. Since 2011, what we have been doing is crisis management. The majority of the city’s population has experienced income loss. We are living in extraordinary conditions and this has affected our policies. But I am happy, because I can say with certainty that there were substantial things accomplished in the sectors of social policy and of tourism. We provided relief to a lot of

people, and we brought an air of development to the city, which has reached a level of maturity. Thessaloniki has entered its next phase, and it is important for this development to become diffused into other sectors of economic activity, creating new jobs. That is what I think should be the city’s narrative for the coming period: development, jobs, innovation, and talent generation. The role of the Municipal Authority is to unite this talent with the global community.

Where do you think the new decade will find you, in regards to your active involvement with civic affairs? That is not something that I have decided yet. I am waiting for this year to come to its conclusion. Nowadays in Greece, I consider it more revolutionary for someone to go into business, to create development and new jobs while at the same time improving their own financial standing. I think that the entrepreneurial

27 | THEA MAGAZINE

aspect is something I have missed and I would be interested in revisiting it from now on. In regards to the broader national political framework, I think entrepreneurship should be an important focus. I will always be involved in civic affairs, either as an active politician or as an active citizen.

Vavdinoudis Nikos Photographer Renowned photographer Nikos Vavdinoudis discusses how photography came into his life, describes his demanding daily routine, reveals how he “sees” Thessaloniki from his own artist’s perspective, and recommends the 5 most “artistic” spots in the city. “Photography came into my life when I was in university. I had the good fortune of having Dimitris Athyridis, the award-winning director, as my professor and at his side I learned about photography in depth. Being an apprentice at his studio was a whole new world for me that provided me with the stimulus and the motive to continue my course as a photographer.” “There is no consistent daily routine – my schedule depends on the photoshoots I have to do. For example, in the last month I had to be in Paris, Crete, Didimoteicho, Sparta, Kalamata and Athens. My day starts in the studio for processing work, appointments and scheduling photoshoots. Due to the nature of my work, I spend several days a week away from Thessaloniki, so I try to devote my free time to my family and also to stay informed about the cultural events of the city by attending exhibitions.”

30 | THEA MAGAZINE

“Thessaloniki is charming from a photographic perspective, whether viewed as a tourist postcard or from a more personal viewpoint. The thousands of posts on social media project multiple facets of the city. Personally, I approached the city through my lens for the photographs in the exhibition ‘The city in black and white’. The city’s multicultural aspect, as reflected on its buildings, is a subject that I would like to approach photographically at some point in the future.” “Five spots I consider special in Thessaloniki are certainly the Photography Museum, the alleys in the Ano Poli, the seaside promenade, which is the city’s most vibrant area, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, and the church of Agios Nikolaos Orfanos.”

Giorgios Mavridis Tattooligans Giorgos Mavridis, a television presenter, multi-award winning tattoo artist and owner of Tattooligans, talks to us about his future professional ventures, he explains how his involvement in tattooing began and which are the things he loves or would like to change in Thessaloniki. “Following years of traveling throughout the globe, my life and my days are finally relatively stable: I am on a daily basis at my tattoo studio in Syggrou street, Tattooligans, and I spend a lot of time with my dog, Molly. The time I spend with Molly, in particular, is something I missed very much during the past few years due to my constant traveling abroad, a fact that I now come to realize. As for the rest, I am also involved in a new and interesting television project, for which you will find out more soon...” “My involvement in tattooing began in 1996. I might say that it was the result of purely chance events, in combination with the artistic vein in me that needed a way to express itself. My professional debut was in 1999, when I opened my first studio in Piraeus, thus embarking on a career that by now counts almost 20 years”.

32 | THEA MAGAZINE

“What I consider my greatest achievement up to date is the fact that, after years in tattooing as well as in other fields – such as, for example, television – I walk down the street and I enjoy the honest love of everyday people. A “well done” and a warm hug from total strangers out there is the greatest award I could chose for myself and I wouldn’t change it for all the distinctions in the world. I hope to continue the same way in the future”. “I have chosen Thessaloniki as my residence for three reasons: This is where my family, my friends and my studio is. Athens is a truly beautiful city, but I only visit it for professional reasons and leave once they are over. Thessaloniki is the city I love, and when you truly love something, you accept it the way it is. Therefore, I wouldn’t change a thing of it. I might – dare I say – add a little sun. “I believe that Thessaloniki has the unique ability to entertain both its residents, as well as its visitors, with its relaxed mood and its infinite choices for coffee, food and long walks”.

Chrysa Zarkali Museologist/ Head of Communications and Public Relations at the State Museum of Contemporary Art The Museologist and Head of Communications and Public Relations at the State Museum of Contemporary Art (SMCA), Chrysa Zarkali, talks about her artistic career so far, about the presence of Thessaloniki in art events, and she recommends important exhibitions as well as her own favorite spots in the city. “The State Museum of Contemporary Art was established in 1997, and since then it has been a dynamically growing non-profit cultural institution in the service of contemporary art. The core of its collections is the Giorgos Costakis collection, which consist of 1277 works of art by Russian artists from the time period that is known in the history of art as the Russian Avant-garde and refers to the first three decades of the 20th century in Russia. The collection, which was enriched by the gift of the collector G. Costakis’s private archive that was given to the museum by his family, is the largest aggregation of works from that period outside of Russia, a fact that also explains the museum’s strong international presence. Another, equally important axis of the SMCA’s activity is the organization of exhibitions and events that promote, support and document contemporary art. Outreach, the lifting of prohibitions and stereotypes, collaboration and beneficial networking with other cultural institutions in Greece and abroad, the laying out of a communication strategy and initiatives for the development of new audiences for the museum, all make up the context of my work for the museum over the past 12 years. My years as a student in the Department of History and Archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki were the beginning of a course whose steps,

at least at first, were determined by what I didn’t want to do. A stint doing museum tours and educational programs at the Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation, and my contact with the public at the hospitality department of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival made me fall deeply in love with the culture sector, mostly for the possibilities that emerge for those lucky few who are open to the relevant stimuli at the personal and professional level. My “nos” became “yeses”. There followed graduate studies in Museology at Leicester in the UK, brief stints at the British Museum and Tate Britain, my return to my home ground, the first open skies and fertile grounds at the Museum of Byzantine Culture, and soon after the SMCA. The presence of Thessaloniki in art activities is a continuous goal, a source of alternating sorrows and joys! The truth is that the city has many cultural institutions, many excellent creative groups, brilliant individuals, who at times suffocate but at the same time work together as a team and systematically with an inexplicable persistence. In recent years, there is so much supply that you are often spoiled for choice. Personally, I would like to see the group of art lovers grow and expand, interact more, demand and co-create new activities. At the State Museum of Contemporary Art, I would recommend that you do not miss the exhibition “Thessaloniki: The Georgios Costakis Collection – Restart” at the SMCA at Moni Lazariston (June 29 – September 16), and the exhibition “Resilient Futures” at the Center for Contemporary Art at the Port of Thessaloniki (June 27 – September). The first exhibition places at the center

34 | THEA MAGAZINE

of review the Costakis collection, the collector himself, the Russian Avant-garde period, through a new museological and museographical perspective. At the center also is the city, as the host of such a cultural treasure, as a strong tool for further tourism development. The second exhibition links the country’s two largest ports, those of Thessaloniki and Piraeus, through video art works that provide fascinating commentary on cities’ resilience and their future. For someone who is visiting Thessaloniki for the first time, the Rotonda – a monument that places Thessaloniki on the global cultural map, any one of the many Byzantine churches (I prefer the Acheiropoietos and the Agioi Apostoloi), the White Tower – the city’s museum where one can “see” the city over five floors, and the Eptapyrgio fortification with its almost heinous history, are all, I think, must-sees. The same is true of the city’s many museums, the International Film Festival, the performances at the State Theater of Northern Greece and the various independent theaters, and the productions at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. My personal favorite recommendation is definitely the axis of Aristotelous street, from the church of Agios Dimitris all the way down to the waterfront. An opening in the city’s center, with countless contradictions, hidden detours, soothing surprises, until you find yourself face to face with Mount Olympus across the bay, between the horizon, the sea and the sky, for a flight forward.”

Vasilis Sakkas – Xanthippe Noti Morning Velvet! Vasilis Sakkas and Xanthippe Noti wake us up every morning from the frequency of Velvet 96.8 radio station. Here, they talk to us about their collaboration, about radio as a medium, and about Thessaloniki, offering their own recommendations for fun and entertainment in the city! V: “Morning Velvet is a radio show that uses humor and a fun attitude to offer a broad range of news and information. Politics, society, showbiz… everything has its place in our three-hour show!” X: “Morning Velvet is a tonic shot after your alarm goes off. Built on spontaneity and selfdeprecating humor, it is an eye-opener that speaks the truth and nothing but the truth!”

Vasilis and Xanthippe: “Music, like every form of art, will always find the means of expression under any circumstances. The fact that “big” music names do not visit the city as often doesn’t mean that there is no creativity here. There are a growing number of smaller, independent stages that host local theater and music groups, as well as photography and art exhibitions, showcasing inspiration and the strength of will. There are small artistic miracles showing up on the city’s streets every day. All we need to do is see them, hear them, and give them the chance to offer us true entertainment. Personally, we recommend to city visitors to not miss the Thievery Corporation and UB40 concerts.”

V: “Radio has a long, rich and glorious history in Thessaloniki; thankfully, its bad moments of the recent past seem to be receding in the distance and the future appears brighter.” X: “The city’s current radio reality is limited both in quantity and quality, compared to the past. But this could ultimately be a good thing. From time to time, there are interesting new efforts launched, and that is hopeful!” V: “My decision to live in Thessaloniki was not so much a choice as it was a desire. After I completed my university studies here, I allowed myself a short amount of time to try and move from the student haunts to more professional milieus. Luck, faith and fiends all contributed so that I would choose the city, or the city would choose me, and I remained in its embrace.” X: “When I returned after having spent an amazing student life in Corfu, I kept my suitcase open and half-full by my desk for months, intent on taking off again. What kept me here were the people and the circumstances. No matter how much beauty surrounds me, it means nothing to me if I don’t have someone to share it with. Thankfully, Thessaloniki is still home to some beautiful people.”

Christina Malle Christina Malle Bags The creative force behind the brand “Christina Malle Bags” talks about her distinctive collections and about how she first became involved with fashion; she reveals the “mistake’ that started it all, and recommends her own favorite spots in Thessaloniki. “My aim is for Christina Malle Bags to be synonymous with ease and style. Geometric forms, distinctive colors, and ease of use are the main features of my collections, which are also accompanied by a fresh postmodernist aesthetic. I am a huge proponent of casual chic looks. The identifying feature and ‘protagonist’ on my creations is the energy symbol – and integral element of Greek culture – the ‘evil eye’. Manufacturing forms and experiential needs have led me to implement each collection with love, inspiration and respect. I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, where I started working in my family’s furniture business. From the beginning, I created my own technique in the construction of decorative pillows; in the process, I became enamored with the materials and got carried away by my love of architecture and fashion, and that is how I got my start in fashion design. It all started quite by accident, with a mistake that eventually led to a very good idea. A failed pillow became a successful bag, and opened the way for Christina Malle Bags. I would say that I am quite touched by the success of my products, but once we became aware of the brand’s level of acceptance by the public, our greatest concern is evolution. We follow fashion and respect our audience,

so research and development is a one-way street for us as we move into the future. In Thessaloniki, I come across creative ideas in fashion and small – due to the difficult times, financially – but exceptional brands that are making a difference. The women of the city love fashion and they have a unique attitude that completes their style. There are many things I love about Thessaloniki. This city has a certain calmness that allows you room to create. Sunday bike rides on the seafront promenade, a relaxed lunch with great food at Mourga restaurant, a scrolldown through my favorite women’s portal, daze.gr, are just a few of the things I love and would definitely recommend. I also love contemporary art influences, which I often find at Zina Athanassiadou Gallery, and the city’s most modern fashion hot spots”.

Truly, Madly, Deeply

...talented! She is an actress loved by audience, and that is no coincidence. Super sweet, incredibly funny and a true joy, Vicky Stavropoulou shared with us, in this exclusive interview, her thoughts about the current state of television, her upcoming professional plans, and the incidents that marked her career so far, revealing what she would change, if she could turn back time.

40 | THEA MAGAZINE

As an actress, you became known and loved by audiences at large through the extremely successful TV show “You are my match”. Do you think it is good for an actor’s first introduction to come through such a successful production? Do you think that actors are favored or perhaps pigeonholed by such roles? Your question partly includes my answer. Using the verbs “know” and “love”, you are expressing your appreciation and, by extension, the public’s appreciation, and for that I thank you. So yes, I think that an actor who is given the opportunity, at the beginning of their career, to be a part of such a quality production that is so successful, is certainly favored, because they have the opportunity to become known to the audience and this opens up new roads.

In your subsequent career, we have enjoyed your performances in equally worthy parts on television and on the stage. Which do you enjoy the most? I love them both, because they are both parts of my job. But I think that the theater has a special kind of magic… It gives you the opportunity to enjoy the audience’s reaction right there and then; to experience this live exchange of energy. It is a magical experience that I can’t put into words.

Vicky Stavropoulou Has there been some unexpected event at a play you were in, that you will never forget?

By Anny Galinou Photos by Ioanna Tzetzoumi Styling by Polina Lamboglou

A theater performance is a completely live event. Imagine that for six months, from Wednesday to Sunday, I was at the Aliki Theater. So, due to the circumstances, unexpected events always happen. The most recent that I can recall, because it truly touched me to my core, was this past summer when we were touring with the play “For God’s sake!”. We were performing in the city of Serres, when suddenly there was a general power outage. Because the performance was quite advanced and we only had about fifteen minutes to go until the end, all of us on stage didn’t know what to do, so we asked the audience how they wanted to proceed, explaining that we were

41 | THEA MAGAZINE

willing to go on. And then this happened: an audience member turned on the flashlight on his cell phone and lit the stage. And suddenly, the entire audience followed suit, they turned on the lights on their phones and the stage of the open-air theater in Serres was illuminated, and we started performing under the lights from the audience. The entire experience was like being at sea at night with fishing lamps, the audience was so supportive and so into the performance, and it was one of the most touching things I have ever experienced on stage. Like a sky full of tiny stars, giving us their lights so that we could go on.

Currently, you are presenting the TV show “Money Drop”. What is next for you? All I can say right now is that in the fall I will again be at Aliki Theater, with a brand new and hilarious comedy!

What is your opinion about the current state of Greek television? What are its shortcomings and what could be done to bring back quality series and shows from the recent past? Things are very simple. There is no money. I think this is all due to the recession that is affecting both the country and our industry. When TV stations have no money, unfortunately they cannot invest in quality productions. And so it is expected that currently there are cheaper shows, which cost a lot less to make than a well-written, demanding series. I hope that the time will come for such shows again, because it is truly sad.

In closing with television, I can’t help but ask you your opinion about the “Survivor” reality show, especially since we know that you hosted the production of a similar reality show from Norway at your summer retreat in Mani. How would you describe this phenomenon, since you have first-hand experience? I will admit that I watched “Survivor” in its first season, when I happened to be home, and I enjoyed it. The production that was filmed on my farm is similar, but not exactly the same. It is called “Champion of champions” and the participants are champions who live in regular residences and do not starve (laughter), but simply compete in extremely demanding challenges. So it is less of a “reality show” than our version and I believe that is no accident, because it is for a different country with a completely different culture.

42 | THEA MAGAZINE

Vicky Stavropoulou

Together with your closest friend and colleague, Christos Hatzipanagiotis, you have created “Euphoria”, a summer house complex in Mani that you yourself have said is a retreat from the rhythms of the big city. How important is nature to you, and living in a beautiful and harmonious environment? As a child, I did not have family in a village somewhere, so I have not spent my childhood in nature. Furthermore, my family’s financial situation did not permit us to go on holiday often. So, growing up, I discovered as a secret need my desire to live close to nature. For me, Euphoria is like an oasis. It is an organic garden with a vegetable patch and fruit trees and plants of all kinds, from tomatoes and chicory to pomegranates and lotuses. And I must tell you that I am eternally grateful for my good fortune to have this farm. I am so happy that I am able to enjoy nature, its quiet, its successions, its rebirth when spring comes along. As I say with my friends, if I

could give the farm a different name, to help describe it to someone who doesn’t know it, I would call it the “farm of pausilipos [grief-appeasing]”, because when you go there it is like all sadness fades away. It’s like becoming one with God, you are at peace… It is so important to be able to come into contact with all that and with nature and to take it all in. That is what I feel. I feel that the splendor of this country where we live can take away every ugliness and trouble. Its energy, its light, its sun…

Based on the previous question, I imagine that it is no accident that for many years now, whenever you visit Thessaloniki you remain faithful to Makedonia Palace. What do you most enjoy about your stay here? My beloved Makedonia Palace! I will sound pretentious, but I am telling the truth: I enjoy everything here! First of all, I enjoy the amazing view. It is the only hotel where, as soon as I open my eyes, from my terrace I see the sea. This is extremely restful for me. And then I have to mention the hotel’s staff. When I come, I stay at the hotel for a month or more, so for me Makedonia Palace becomes like a second home. I have been in this business for 18 years, and every single time I come to Thessaloniki, I only ever stay at Makedonia Palace. As you can understand, that’s a lot of stays! So it is very important to me that there are people who are so kind and caring, so discrete and available, as the people who work at Makedonia Palace. And that is true for everyone, from the hotel manager to the sweet boys and girls at valet parking and housekeeping.

43 | THEA MAGAZINE

I will recount one incident that I think says it all. Last year, when I was leaving Makedonia Palace, the whole company was making fun of me because I was crying! Hatzipanagiotis had gotten in one car, Mouratidis, Loudaros and Konstantaki in the other, and they were all waiting for me. So I come out fifteen minutes later crying, and when they asked me why, I said “I’m sad because I’m leaving the staff”. And they said, “Vicky, don’t let anyone see you, you’ll make a fool of yourself! Are you nuts?”

Vicky Stavropoulou

In closing, I would like to mention your daughter, the very likeable Danae Barka, whose presence we enjoy on social media, and also through the pranks she plays on you. How special is the mother-daughter relationship, and what similarities have you noticed in your and your daughter’s character? First of all, I have to tell you that Danae loves Makedonia Palace, because when she was little I took her with me and we stayed here. In fact, she stayed here last year when she was on tour with a production of “Lysistrata”, and every time she comes to Thessaloniki. In regards to my relationship with Danae, of course it is special, like every mother-daughter relationship. It is the most important relationship in my life. My daughter and I are very similar, but at the same time Danae is also a very different child – she’s a new generation! More advanced technologically! (laughter) What we are is the plural of the voices that

raise us. So it is reasonable that Danae, having grown up mostly with her mother, has many similarities with me. But there are also many differences. I think that she is a very special child, very sensitive, incredibly perceptive and very talented. Of course, I can’t be objective about her, because I am the mother owl, but I honestly believe what I say and I think it is true. Danae always moves me and makes me very proud by being in my life and by growing and showing me that she is a very composed person.

Having been a working mother in a very demanding professional field, how easy do you think it is to combine motherhood with a career? Is there something that you would change, if you could turn back time? First of all, I must say that there are working mothers who work a lot harder than I ever had to, such as my mother, who worked two jobs to raise us. Of course I believe that a mother can work and also be able to meet all her obligations to her child. Especially today that life has changed and gotten much harder, and mothers need to work. But beyond the “musts” and the financial factor, there are women, and I am one of them, who want to work. One thing that has troubled me and that I carry with me as guilt is that unfortunately I have missed out on many instances from my daughter’s childhood. Of course, this is true for all working mothers, that they will miss a party or school event. But it is something that burdens me and if I could, I would want to change it. But on the other hand, as with all things in life, you

44 | THEA MAGAZINE

win some, you lose some. I know mothers who do not work and yet do not have this comprehensive relationship with their child that I believe I have with Danae. So it’s not just black and white, there’s also gray. Beside, every relationship as strong and deep as that of a parent with their child is so personal, that you couldn’t in the course of an interview analyze how each person choses to raise their children. For me, what matters is to be dedicated, to love our children and to support them. The most important thing is for children to grow up with love and freedom.

SPRING/SUMMER FASHION TRENDS

2018

Spring is already upon us and summer is not far behind – and the new seasons’ fashion trends are here to fill our days with color and style! Here is a taste of the dictates of international runways for the warm months ahead.

Ice cream hues Choose the colors you will be wearing this season exactly as you would choose your favorite ice cream flavors! The pastel palette is back in full force, with its cool and refreshingly sweet hues. Victoria Beckham showed lavender and soft pink outfits, pale yellow was the order of the day at Hermès, and mint made a splash at Sies Marjan. So dig into your closet and create your own pastel combinations.

VICTORIA BECKHAM

Bright as pink Bright pink is fast becoming the color of the season, lending its joyful character to jumpsuits, t-shirts and accessories. Many designers based their entire collections on this color, often pairing it with yellow for an ideal combination.

HELMUL LANG

Τhe pencil project 1950s feminine style has made a dynamic comeback on the international catwalks, including at Balenciaga, Hermès and Off-White, who built their collections around elegant key pieces such as the timelessly classic pencil skirt. Wear it with kitten heels for an Italian-chic look, or pair it with sneakers for a less formal but still very stylish outfit.

BALENCIAGA

The new slip dress The slip dress is a consistent favorite of fashion designers, but this season it has shed it usually minimalist character and was shown embellished with feathers, embroidery, and gems, as seen at Christopher Kane, Coach, and Tory Burch.

Print on print One of the biggest trends for spring/summer 2018 is reviving the spirit of mix ’n’ match, by combining different prints and patterns in the same outfit. We fell in love with this look as shown in the runway shows by Gucci, Marni, Mary Katrantzou, Dries Van Noten and Maison Margiela. Let your imagination run wild and create interesting and uplifting outfits!

MARNI

Bold, bold, bold! Color, color, and more color… Marni, Roksanda and Aalto have adopted the headto-toe color-blocking style for outfits that exude self-confidence; a strong showing of bright hues is stealing the show this season. So don’t be afraid to create statement looks, voting “yes” to colorfulness!

Denim forever!

Forget miniskirts. This season, it is all about comfort, combined with a sexy attitude. Short shorts were seen in many runway shows, including at Chloé, Saint Laurent and Nina Ricci, making a strong case for showing off your legs this summer!

Classic and timeless, denim returns in its more darkhued version, for a fashion flashback to 2000. Famous brands including Tom Ford and Nina Ricci are bringing back jeans in their more clean-cut shape.

GUCCI

Τhe Sportswear club The athleisure look continues to be a strong trend this season, now interpreted through ‘80s throwback pieces, with oversized jogger pants worn with high heels, as seen at Gucci and Isabel Marant. Due to the recession in Greece, it could be said that today’s consumers are perhaps better informed than in the past. In your opinion, what is the contemporary consuming public looking for, and how can they find it at attica? Consumers in 2018 are smart, well-informed, selective, and with a limited amount of available time. For them, the shopping experience is inextricably linked to the cost of goods; they pay great attention to quality, and they are seeking – now more than ever – what we call value for money. Consumers want and need to acquire goods, services and experiences that facilitate their everyday life and that make them feel good. In this context, consumer demands also touch upon marketing and communication activities that, much like goods and services, also need to be up to the consumers’ quality standards to be effective. Especially in fashion, the criteria are especially demanding, since fashion is in itself a form of communication that is expected to be original, creative, an expression of a certain lifestyle, of high aesthetic value, always unexpected, and ultimately “therapeutic”.

In your opinion, which are the most important marketing tools at a time when innovation is flourishing, and what is their significance in relation to a business behemoth such as attica department stores?

Attica department stores could be described as a “heaven” for fashion and beauty. What is the role of each of these sectors in your everyday life? Attica equals fashion and beauty! When these two sectors are combined with high aesthetic quality, then you truly find yourself in heaven! I try to make aesthetic value a basic element of my everyday life, and this does not just pertain to the way I dress or the style I adopt, but to my overall attitude, the way I talk, move and think, the way I design and plan, the way I dream, and ultimately what my associates, colleagues, and friends think about me.

It is important to consider that consumers now operate in an environment with many different shopping channels and almost unlimited abilities and options. Consequently, marketing also needs to utilize omni-channel techniques, in order to meet the needs of consumers who may do research online, ultimately choose the bricks-and-mortar store to conclude their purchases, and then return to the online environment for customer service. And still, it is not enough for marketing activities to keep up with consumers – they must be one step ahead on- and offline, in order either to promote or to add value to their shopping experience. In this framework, 2018 finds marketers in a position where they are expected to utilize as many on- and offline tools as possible, since the marketing plan must combine traditional media with the latest and most innovative options; e.g. a simple, offline promotional activity or event is promoted via live streaming, the store’s traditional windows are enhanced using augmented or virtual reality techniques, the content of an add becomes responsive for television or for any mobile device, etc. Meanwhile, to communicate with consumers we utilize every messaging app at our disposal, in order to reach them in the real-time environment of their smart phone or tablet.

Please tell us about the fashion and beauty brands that can be found exclusive at attica department stores. What sets attica apart from other department stores? Attica department stores are some of the most up-to-date destinations in regards to fashion and beauty. Our product mix includes the latest in clothing, footwear and accessories brands, as well as in cosmetics and fragrance. Our goal is to offer a broad range of products and renowned brands exclusively, so as to meet as much as possible the needs of the contemporary consumer, who has access to many different shopping channels. At the same time, due to the financial difficulties facing the majority of the consumer public, our desire is to always be able to offer many different options across a broad price range, while always ensuring the quality that is expected of a department store with high standards. Finally, it is important to note that the company has succeeded – due to good financial management – in preserving its cash flows, and so it is able to make deals and place orders with international firms and maintain full product inventory.

attica are the largest department stores in Thessaloniki, while Makedonia Palace is the city’s most emblematic hotel. How do you think the interaction between the tourism and retail sectors can help promote a positive image of the city?

51 | THEA MAGAZINE

The presence of two such significant businesses in Thessaloniki can only be positive for the city. Directly and indirectly, they contribute to the rise of the city’s economy, acting as “portals” for outreach to the city’s visitors. The hospitality level at Makedonia Palace combined with the shopping experience provided by attica department stores are certain to reflect visitors’ experiences from other large European cities. By improving the city’s overall image, we attract more and repeat visits!

Having studied Media Communications at Goldsmiths University of London, your professional involvement with television and the media seems like a natural consequence. But how did modelling come into your life? And how did you decide, following your studies in London, to return to Greece and participate in the beauty pageant where you won the Star Hellas 2010 title? The truth is, I did not pursue modelling and I have not worked as a model systematically. It came about as a consequence of the beauty pageant. As for coming back to Greece and entering the pageant, it was a last-minute decision, not something that I had always thought about.

Born in Belgrade, Serbia, raised in Thessaloniki, and having lived both in Bologna, Italy and in Athens, where do you feel most at home?

You speak 5 languages, and you have the experience of living abroad. Has the thought of an international career crossed your mind?

My strongest memories growing up are from Thessaloniki, where my parents still live and I visit as often as I have the chance. It is my city and I love it. Belgrade is where my grandparents are, my cousins and my uncles, so it will always have a place in my heart. And Athens is now my home.

It is not part of my immediate plans, but you never know what the future will bring. Although I truly love Greece and I wouldn’t want to live in any other country, I never say never. In addition to a model and TV presenter, you are also an ice skating champion in Greece. Would you consider doing this (or any other sport) professionally? As a person, you are always in the spotlight, not just because of your own work, but also because of your very famous and very popular father. This constant exposure, is it something that has taken its toll, or something that, over the years, you have learned to contend with?

I love sports, but not professionally. If I really wanted to, I would have continued on that path years ago. One professional athlete in the family is quite enough!

I don’t feel that I am constantly in the spotlight. As children, we had a simple family life and my sister and I were all grown up before we realized (mostly by what others told us) how recognizable our father is. My parents are very low-key people and I am glad that both I and my sister, Tea, are like them in that respect.

What is it like to be the daughter of a legend? Did you ever feel the need to “live up to” your father’s fame? Our father was always our father. We never thought of him as a legend. Of course, I am aware of everything he has achieved and I am very proud of him. I see how the public still loves him, but it never crossed my mind that I have to “live up to” his fame. Have you noticed an artistic flair in yourself? I enjoy music greatly; I couldn’t imagine my life without it, but that’s as far as my relationship with it goes. At least for now…

Chrysianna Andriopoulou www.shopranoblog.com Facebook: Shoprano Instagram: shopranoblog

Tell us a little bit about your blog, Shoprano. My passion for fashion and for everyday lifestyle led me to start the blog. It is an expression of my everyday life, of both my fashion and my lifestyle choices. Who is its audience and what makes it special? My intended audience is everyone who loves fashion and travel, and it is special because it is a reflection of my personality. Every blog is different, just as we are all different individuals. You studied Economics and continued with graduate studies in London. How did you become involved with fashion? I loved the world of fashion ever since I was a little girl, and I usually indulged myself with the treasures hidden in my mother’s closet, creating my own combinations of clothing and accessories! Growing up, I studied Economics and when I returned to Greece I started working in marketing. Ultimately, life led me to fashion; I was asked to join the world of fashion magazines, and that is how this fabulous fashion journey began! As an eternal voguette, what do you most miss about your years at Vogue? For me, Vogue is magic; it is the ultimate fashion magazine that I bought without fail ever since I was a little girl. I miss the whole process that we went through every month to create each new issue from scratch, up until the moment that I held the new issue in my hands before it went out to the newsstands. You have travelled to every fashion capital in the world. In your opinion, which is the Mecca of fashion? They are all so different, and each one has its own unique features. But if I had to pick one, I would choose Paris.

Are you an incurable shopper? What are your stylistic weaknesses? In the past, I shopped a lot more! Now I prefer to invest in more timeless clothing and accessories, but if I fall in love with the occasional trendy piece, I will submit to temptation and buy it. I have a big weakness for bags and shoes. If you could offer only one piece of style advice, what would it be? In your outfits, combine classic and modern pieces for an exceptional but not excessive outcome. Follow the new trends, but always adapt them to your own personality. Have you ever visited Makedonia Palace hotel? What are your impressions? It is a hotel distinguished by exceptionally good taste and very high quality of service. For sure, when I am back in Thessaloniki, I will visit it again.

Brief Q&A Fashion icon: Grace Kelly (absolute elegance); from the present, I would pick Sienna Miller, Blake Lively, and Sarah Jessica Parker Favorite Greek designer: MiRo Favorite fashion item: Chanel bags Ideal destination: The Greek islands in the summer I can’t live without: My smartphone… and lots of love from my nearest and dearest! If I wasn’t a fashion blogger, I would be: Advertising manager at Vogue & TV personality

BEAUTY Danai Katsali www.iforgotmycrown.gr Facebook:I Forgot My Crown Instagram: iforgotmycrown

Tell us a little bit about your blog, “I Forgot My Crown”. Ah – that’s my favorite blog! (laughter) I started it having absolutely no idea what I was doing and it has evolved into the most fun thing I do during my day. I always enjoyed trying on new products and giving my opinion on them, to anyone who would listen! So a good friend suggested that I start writing down my reviews. I started out in the summer of 2014, and the truth is that, in the beginning, maybe five people read my blog. Who is your audience and what makes your blog special? My audience is every woman, regardless of age. Saying that something makes my blog special is quite a statement. But I will say that it is somewhat different, in the style of the posts that are always humorous and a bit sarcastic, and of course because of Vida, my dog, who is an essential part of my life and consequently a steady presence on the blog! In addition to your blog, you also have your own YouTube channel, and your Instagram account has a large number of followers. How did you become involved with social media and what do you most enjoy about them? My involvement with social media started from my primary occupation, which is at an advertising agency. I work as a copywriter in the creative department, which means that, among other things, I develop concepts for social media campaigns. So, through my professional activities, I familiarized myself and slowly began developing my own channels. I totally enjoy my interaction with my followers, the fact that I have met people that otherwise I probably never would have known, and also seeing that my own thoughts and worries are also on the minds of most women out there! It is great not to feel alone! Which beauty products are never missing from your daily routine, and why? I am never without my sunscreen (to the extent that it is considered a beauty product), a brow product, a blush and a highlighter. I love a dewy makeup style, and I am lucky that it is easy to achieve with just a few products – and a lot of highlighter!

Brief Q&A Beauty icon: Alexa Chung Favorite makeup look: Glowy makeup Favorite lip and manicure colors: Nude lip, red manicure I never leave the house without: Sunscreen I can’t live without: Highlighter (OK, that’s an exaggeration, I can live without it, but it’s better with highlighter!) If I wasn’t a beauty blogger, I would be: A copywriter. I really enjoy writing.

Please describe what is a typical morning and evening makeup style for you. I usually do very simple makeup, and the only difference between my morning and evening looks is the intensity of the same products. In the morning, I’ll apply some blush, a little mascara, a “quiet” eyeshadow, a nude lipstick, and lots of highlighter. If I want to wear a stronger lipstick shade, I’ll tamp it on to make

it more discrete. In the evening, the blush will be more obvious, the eyeshadow more distinct, the lipstick will be darker, and the highlighter will be intense – as usual! In your opinion, what makes a woman beautiful and which beauty tips will help her look fresh from morning till night? A woman who takes care of herself will always look beautiful! I think the only tip I can recommend is to devote some care to your eyebrows. Nicely shaped, full eyebrows (I am not talking about those you see on Instagram) make your gaze look more rested and lively. Also, setting sprays! I neglected them for years, but they really help keep blush in its place – I spent years looking for the most lasting blusher on the market – and keep your face looking dewy, and consequently fresh, even after hours spent in front of your computer! Please share with us the spring/summer 2018 beauty trends that every woman should adopt. Glosses! On your lips and on your eyelids (oh, yes!). Glosses are here to help put matte, harsher-colored lipsticks and matte eyeshadow in your beauty drawer for a while. Eye-glosses are the latest thing and every brand is launching their own version. It looks like a lip gloss and requires a tiny amount on the moving part of the lid. Immediately, your eyes look more “liquid” and your gaze comes alive! Have your ever visited Makedonia Palace hotel? What are your impressions? Unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to visit it so far. I have only been to Thessaloniki once, but I hope to come back soon and see the renovated areas of Makedonia Palace up close!

Who is your audience and what makes it special? My audience is everyone. I have more affordable recommendations, and pricier ones. But because, as I already said, the blog is me, and I prefer affordable options because I believe that good food does not mean expensive food, there are mostly restaurants and recipes that do not cost a lot. I don’t know if "eatingaround.gr" is special in some respect, because it is mine and I like the result I see. If I didn’t like it, I would not publish it. But I don’t think I am offering something that doesn’t already exist. I used to be ahead of the trend, but now there are many lovely food blogs and each one has something good and special to offer. The great thing about food and eating is that it is an inexhaustible field, a living organism that keeps growing and has many needs. How did you decide to start your own blog? I didn’t exactly decide to do it, it sort of happened, back in 2010 when there weren’t that many blogs and I didn’t know exactly how to operate it. I simply enjoyed writing and cooking and I felt a great need to share with more people what I was making, that I was always proud of. I am very lucky that I started out so early, and I have experienced all these phases that blogging has gone through in Greece. I was 25 when I started, just a girl! How easy was it to establish yourself as a full-time blogger? I couldn’t say that it was easy or hard, because I never said, “now I’m going to be a professional full-time blogger”. It came naturally into my life. At first it was a hobby, something I did parallel to my job. Eventually, some people found me through my writing and recommended collaborations; in the meantime, I was getting bored with my office job, at some point I lost my job,

people started offering me work as a blogger, the hours became full-time and the money started being worthwhile. Of course, throughout all these years, the work does not have a consistent flow and the money is not always good or steady. And it’s not easy to answer when people ask me what I do for a living. What I do cannot be described with one word, and some people still can’t fathom how “blogger” can be a profession.

FOOD

Tell us a little bit about your blog. It is a story that goes back 8 years. In that time, "eatingaround.gr" went through various stages, as did I, because my blog is me, it is my life. As a person, I have a tendency to share with others the delicious flavors that I consider special – not just in writing, but in general with the people who are close to me. I like to say, “I went to soand-so yesterday and had a pasta dish that was amazing!” In general, I write the way I speak and I speak the way I write. At first, "eatingaround.gr" only featured my own recipes, but eventually I thought that the “around” part describes something larger. So now I have two sections. I separate the restaurant reviews from my own recipes, which are in the “Like a blonde” section.

How many food blogs are there in Greece? Do you think that there is greater competition than with other types of blogging? I don’t know how many there are, and I’m not going to count them. There are certainly a lot and the problem is that food blogs are not the only ones that are food blogging. Food blogging also appears in magazines and on general-content and lifestyle websites. Also, many chefs have now become food bloggers. It is a wide-open field and there is certainly competition, as in every field, but I haven’t experienced anything extreme. Blogging, social media, even television – we have seen you on several different media. Which do you enjoy the most? I enjoy them all and I wish I could do them all at the same time. This year, for the first time after four years, I am not on the TV show and I miss that, being in front of the camera. Everything has its own joy. In this line of work, the person who has it all and does as much as possible is the most successful. And I believe that it is an addictive occupation, not just in regards to food, but in other fields as well. What do you imagine and hope that your future will look like? Professionally, I hope that I will be as I am now, with good partnerships, calm, good communication, creativity, and eager to continue searching and trying out new things. I hope to do television again, or a large YouTube channel, which will host very different videos, not just cooking behind the counter.

Emmanouela Kokkali www.eatingaround.gr Facebook: Eating Around Instagram: emmaforeatingaround

What are your impressions of Makedonia Palace? I love it, because I love Thessaloniki and I believe that it is a city landmark and point of reference.

Brief Q&A I love to cook: Sugar-free, healthy and alternative desserts and colorful salads I love to eat: The exact opposite to the above, but what can you do? Food that I hate: There’s quite a few, actually: I hate mushrooms, okra, artichokes, and Roquefort cheese I can’t live without: Chocolate, coffee, eggs and yellow chees When I’m not cooking: I take care of my home, my dogs and my significant other

Tell us a little bit about your blog. Dreamista.gr was one of the first travel blogs in Greece; it was started in October 2014. My older articles were focused on international destinations, packing tips, travel style and beauty/fitness tips on the go. When I had my twin boys in September 2016, it was certain that, like my life, Dreamista was going to change course. Who is your audience and what makes your blog special? Well, now Dreamista is addressed to the parents of infants, babies, and twins who love to travel, who used to travel a lot before becoming a family, and who now wish to continue travelling as a family. It is the only Greek travel blog for travelling with twins and with infants. When the twins were just 13 months old, Dreamista appeared on the global list of 100 best Family Travel Blogs, which I consider a major success – and it is largely due to the fact that it has such a distinct niche. How common is travel blogging in Greece? Very! In early 2016, travel blogs started cropping up like mushrooms – now, there are more than 70 such blogs that are active. And that is when travel brands started collaborating more and more with those of us who started out first. How easy was it to become established as a full-time blogger? It took a long time and a lot of work. For the first two years, I was posting three articles a week! Travel blogging was not common; I was not a well-known journalist before, so I started everything from scratch. But I had a specific goal in mind and I did not get sidetracked; I had to say “no” a lot, and explain my blog’s theme to the brands.

in our pajamas all day, breastfeeding. I actively choose to take them out in their carriage every day, as exercise for me and for a change of scenery. I love reading parenting books and family travel blogs. I am lucky that at 19 months, I am still home with them and get to experience them every day. Of course, the twin carriage does not permit us to go to many events, and having twins has changed the way we travel a lot, but we adapt and carry on! How did you decide to include travelling with twins in your blog? When we took our first trip with the twins, I wrote three posts for a two-day trip (!), which had great impact. Each one of my articles is an opportunity to talk to many baby moms and twin moms. They ask me for advice, and I recommend hotels and products (mostly sling bags, car seats and eating chairs). Since we travel with our twins because we enjoy it, and since from these travels I get interesting and engaging material for my articles, it was only natural that this new category eventually dominated my blog. Which is your greatest goal, professionally? I would like to start international travels with the twins, so that I can recommend destinations and hotels around the world, to parents of infants, babies and twins from around the world. What are your impressions of Makedonia Palace? Always the best! The hotel’s attention to detail and warm hospitality, combined with immediate, discrete and impeccable service, make every stay here exceptional.

How much did your life change when you became a mother of twins? Thankfully, completely! I loved the postpartum period, when we were all three

Creative mind! >>> Τhe duties

RENA TSALIGOPOULOU Marketing & Creative Manager >>> To know us better Rena Tsaligopoulou was born in Thessaloniki, where she studied Graphic Design and Visual Communication. In 2013, her path led her to Makedonia Palace, when the hotel reopened under new management, by new owner Ivan Savvidis. Although the project she was assigned was very demanding, she managed to complete it with great success. In the very tight window of just twenty days, the hotel had to be ready to welcome its guests once again. Finally, after a lot of hard work, everything was ready on time! Ms. Tsaligopoulou continued working on the creative aspect, and when the Marketing department was established she became one of its main executives.

100 | THEA MAGAZINE

We asked Ms. Tsaligopoulou about her duties as Marketing & Creative Manager: “Marketing is what defines the product that you sell. The purpose of our department, in addition to creating all of the hotel’s hard copies, is to be innovative, to constantly seek out new ideas to promote the hotel. We always want to be one step ahead. We have the good fortune of being the leader among Thessaloniki hotels, a position that, if utilized properly, can bring about a positive outcome. My duties are not limited within a prescribed framework; I am involved in everything that pertains to the hotel’s overall image, in collaboration with all other departments. For our guests, we have selected a series of unique experiences and services that make Makedonia Palace more than just a hotel.”

>>> When difficulties are... easy! “The most pleasant part of my job is the harmonious collaboration with all departments, from maintenance to management. We feel like one big group of friends! The human factor is the most important element in the workplace, and we can brag that we have the best possible environment. If I had to mention a difficulty, it would probably be the pressure of limited time, but that can also be positive because it keeps you on your toes. One of the greatest projects involved in the Makedonia Palace renovation was the rebranding, as the hotel’s entire corporate identity had to be adapted to the new era. It was all accomplished in a very short period of time, just 25 days once the new logo was approved. We went through the same ordeal as in 2013, except this time the project was much larger. Nevertheless, once we succeeded in being fully ready at the opening, I believe that we can accomplish everything!”

>>> Communication is the secret

>>> Τhe awards

We wondered if communication was always an aspect of her personality: “No, communication was not always a part of my character, as opposed to creativity, which has been my defining feature since childhood. I remember sitting in front of the computer and designing using Paint software. My working experience at Makedonia Palace has helped me evolve my communication skills. This hotel is a great learning experience that changes your perspective, as you are constantly communicating with clients, colleagues, external organizations, etc. Here, unavoidably, communication is everywhere!”

Of course, we had to mention that Makedonia Palace was recently named top hotel of the year at the 2018 Greek Hospitality Awards. “Winning the top spot was entirely due to the collective effort of the hotel’s human resources. The courteousness, impeccable service, unique services… these are not the result of the efforts of individual departments. It is a collective endeavor that is clearly bearing fruit.”

>>> Marketing matters... How important is a marketing strategy for the city’s top hotel? “Marketing Strategies are indeed of high relevance, especially in a hotel of this category. When you are at the top, you have the power to define the market. It is much easier getting to the top than it is staying there. That is why we are always seeking to create new offerings and experiences, through inspired projects. I consider the change in the public’s perception of hotels to be of major significance. We wish to escape the purely “tourist” approach. We want to offer an equally good time to foreign guests and locals who use our services. After all, it was the residents of Thessaloniki who first brought us to the top. That is why we want to continuously offer them something more, and we are very happy that lately our client target group includes a younger demographic.”

>>> Shooting for success! We asked Ms. Tsaligopoulou about the hotel’s goals in regards to its perception abroad. “We are gradually trying to enter new markets with direct transportation links to Thessaloniki. Makedonia Palace is ready to “spread its wings” into the European markets, beyond the Balkans, which of course remain very important to us. After the renovation our client list has expanded to include guests from the USA, the UK, Germany and Austria. We are making slow but steady progress and our efforts, through all our activities, are also intended to promote the city in general, as a destination. There are still people who do not know a whole lot about Thessaloniki. We are endeavoring daily to raise awareness about the city.”

beautiful people. It is sociable, hospitable, and it offers a wide range of entertainment options, cultural activities and, of course, gastronomic delights. Makedonia Palace is not the faceless, detached environment that some people may expect from hotels. We are not just a city hotel, but we extend everywhere, through creative activities and excursions: authentic hammam bath experiences, museum visits and festivals, games, mini excursions to historic sites in and around the city, hot air balloon rides, adventure trekking on Mount Olympus, kayaking and scuba diving in Halkidiki, alternative thematic tours in Thessaloniki, educational programs and art events, and many, many more once-in-a-lifetime experiences!” >>> Μy favorites When she needs to relax, Rena Tsaligopoulou visits the offices of her beloved colleagues, and loves to walk in the hotel’s gardens. She spends her time creatively playing the guitar, walking with her dog Luna, whom she considers family; she loves her friends and photography, long walks, and every type of arts and crafts, and she declares herself a dedicated gamer!

>>> We choose Τhessaloniki But why should someone choose Thessaloniki as their destination and Makedonia Palace for their stay? “Thessaloniki is a beautiful city with equally

OUR PEOPLE DREAM TEAM

Four members of Makedonia Palace team spoke to us about their work and the collaboration between them, and revealed their strongest memories and their favorite spots in the most emblematic hotel in Northern Greece.

"My favorite spot in the hotel is Salonica restaurant, which combines my great love, the kitchen, with the incredible Makedonia Palace view..."

Nikolaidis Kyriakos Pastry Chef

I am the Pastry Chef of Makedonia Palace and I oversee pastry-making for the entire hotel, at Salonica and Navona restaurants. I am not new to the hotel. I worked here between 1997 and 2004; then I moved to Athens and returned this past May. Makedonia Palace is a hotel that I know and love, with incredible potential, and a true landmark of the city. I have many memories from the hotel, but mostly I recall the grandiose events that were always held here and that the entire city talked about afterwards. Very happy and strong memories. My collaboration with my colleagues is exemplary. I have many exceptional and worthy colleagues. Especially with the executive chef, Mr. Evangelou, our acquaintance goes way back and we have had parallel courses, as we also worked together in Athens. But I also have excellent relations with all my subordinates. They are all great people, with a strong interest in their work, always looking for new ideas that we discuss and implement on our work counters. There is no one secret to a successful collaboration – there are many. But the most important of all is to know the person you have in front of you! What their character is, how you should treat them. Each person is different; you cannot treat everyone the same way. So the most important thing is to know who you are dealing with, so that you can handle them the right way and help them become integrated into your team in a way that everyone complements each other. My favorite spot in the hotel is Salonica restaurant, which combines my great love, the kitchen, with the incredible Makedonia Palace view!

"I think that the secret to a successful collaboration is honesty and clear relationships. "

I love working in the sales department, as Sales Coordinator. My duties include managing the rooms, and I collaborate directly with the Group Sales Manager. I came to Thessaloniki from Rhodes in December of 2013, and I have been working at Makedonia Palace ever since, in the same position. My progress so far has been constantly varying and diverse and very interesting, because no day is like the previous. It is a very interesting job, not at all monotonous, with many different aspects to it. My strongest memory so far is from when the hotel reopened after the renovation project. Initially, I mostly remember our joy that we were finally reopening! In my department we have a very strong team; we have been in synchronization since the day that I started working here, something that I have never before experienced to this extent. We have an exceptionally good communication, we perform our duties with pleasure, and that is a good reason to look forward to coming to work every day. I think that the secret to a successful collaboration is honesty and clear relationships.

Tatiana Panagiota Sales Coordinator

My favorite spot in the hotel is the view of the sea from the balconies. Having been born and raised on an island, I love the sea, and so I love seeing the endless blue of the sea and sky as they meet on the horizon in the incredible vista from Makedonia Palace.

I have been working at Makedonia Palace since February 2014, as a Reservations Agent. I truly enjoy my job, because every day we come in contact with so many people, either on the phone or via email. Besides, I believe that the only way to perform well and to accomplish your goals is by loving what you do. An important part of what I do is managing the online channels, through which a large number of reservations are made every day: booking.com, expedia, hotelbeds, etc. Of course, we also have direct communication with other departments, such as the front desk, the sales and accounting departments. My strongest memory is from the beginning of my career, when I started my apprenticeship, at 22 years old, at the reception department of Makedonia Palace. I really wanted to do my apprenticeship here, so I submitted my resume. When I was notified that I would start, I couldn’t describe my joy. Relationships between the staff at Makedonia Palace are very strong. In my opinion, every healthy enterprise is characterized by team spirit, continuous information, communication, understanding, even tensions sometimes, and this is true here as well. Besides, this is reflected in the comments by most of our guests, who encounter a very friendly, if not family-like, hospitality. After all, that is how we all feel, as members of a family.

Eleni Delianidi Rooms Reservations Agent

"Turn your work into a hobby, and you will never feel that you are working"

The secret for a successful collaboration? I’ll say it in English: “Turn your work into a hobby and you will never feel that you are working”. My favorite spot in the hotel is the view from the 8th floor. It is the most beautiful, panoramic view of the entire city, right here form our hotel.

Dimitra Savvopoulou Housekeeping

I work in housekeeping, and my duties involve cleaning and maintaining the proper appearance in all areas of the hotel. I started working at Makedonia Palace in June of 2000. I love my job, because I truly love the hotel. My strongest memory from my years of working here was when the hotel closed; our anxiety about whether it would reopen on time and, of course, the reopening. All of us who work here have excellent work relations, because we all feel like family. After all these years, we have become friends. In my department, we work as a team and each one of us complements the other. As a team, we have our ups and downs, but our secret is that we completes each other and so our collaboration is very harmonious. Besides, we spend more time here than we do at home – so this feels like our second home! My favorite spot in the hotel is the 8th floor, and specifically the corner that looks towards the White Tower. After 18 years of working here, every time I see the sunset from Makedonia Palace, it feels like I’m seeing it for the first time. It is simply magical.

souroti.gr

The lack of drinking water in the Thessaloniki region at the beginning of the 20th century activated the hydrogeology services of the French Army and therefore the sources of Sourotis were discovered. At that time, the first bottling plant of natural mineral water was created in Greece. Recently, SOUROTI SA celebrated its 100 years of operation, so perhaps we are talking about the longest bottling company of natural mineral water! Today it is the most popular natural mineral water in Greece and one of the richest mineral waters in the world. It springs from the homonymous historical source, at Mount Holomontas, which, according to scientists, is estimated at 120 meters deep, which is considered ideal for "mineral" sources. The speed of the water in the underground is slow and, passing through a variety of rocks, on one hand it is filtered and on the other hand it is enriched with beneficial ingredients, which give it its particular mineral composition and its distinct flavor. The water at source is cold throughout the year, with a constant temperature of about 16 ° C. SOYROTIS's water has been recognized since 1991 as Natural Mineral Water, with its specific characteristics, calcium, magnesium, acidulous, oxycarbonated, according to European and Greek legislation and is included in the European List of Natural Mineral Waters. It is rich in acid carbonates, valuable mineral elements and trace elements (such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, lithium) which are essential, just like vitamins, for the good

body health and the well-being. One liter of SOUROTI offers about 1/5 of the daily calcium needs and about 1/6 of everyday magnesium needs of an adult's. It is highly digestible and refreshing water, which normalizes the function of the digestive and urinary system. SOYROTI contains no calories or preservatives. Analyzes have shown that its "mineral" content is the same as that of 1914, when the first analysis of the water was made, proving the unchanging quality in time.

FEELTHEVIBE Zythos & Dore Zithos restaurants, with two establishments in the city center of Thessaloniki, defines the gastronomic identity of the city with all the characteristics of Greek/Minor Asian cuisine. Starting in Ladadika back in 1990, the reputation spread all over Greece as the first beer house and later the first Mediterranean Beer-Restaurant. In 1995, it continued by restoring the most historic café of our city, Dore (est 1917). Thus continuing a century old legacy in front of the shadow of the most recognizable monument of Thessaloniki, the White Tower. At Zithos, beer was blended with flavors of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine and served with fresh Greek Craft beers and wine. Lamb Kebabs, Itch Pilaf (traditional Constantinople style rice), Tomato Burgers from Santorini, classic Fava bean salad and the postmodern Chicken Salad with peanut butter paired with a vast selection of local beers and wine, will fire up the senses even of the most demanding food lover. What’s our secret? The hand picked selection of local fresh raw ingredients, the handmade produce from all over Greece, along with our care in cooking and professional service, is what established Zithos as the most well-known historical restaurant of Greece. www.zythos.gr

Live your myth in... Halkidiki! It is the number one holiday destination for residents of Thessaloniki and for the majority of residents of Northern Greece, and rightfully so. With the unique capacity of combining gorgeous beaches with amazing wooded landscapes and wild entertainment with familystyle holidays, Halkidiki truly possesses the “entire package”, as the ultimate destination for your dream holiday! With its three peninsulas, known as “legs”, as the geographical points of reference, at each one Halkidiki offers a different holiday and entertainment style, with something to satisfy even the most demanding visitors.

134 | THEA MAGAZINE

First leg: Kassandra Starting from Thessaloniki and through the road that links it with the city of Nea Moudania, Halkidi extends before us starting with the impressive canal of Potidea, which is the first stop en route to Kassandra and a family holiday destination. Next, Nea Fokaia will certainly catch your attention with its picturesque port, while the village of Afytos will make feel that you are vacationing on an island! If you are a thrill-seeker, the heart of Halkidiki nightlife beats in Kallithea. This is the site of some of the most famous bars and clubs and it draws thousands of Greek and foreign visitors every year, with events featuring big stars from the Greek and international music scene. As for the legendary beach bars with the most sought-after parties that start in midday and go on until late at night, seek them out between the villages of Pefkohori and Paliouri, where you will also find some of the most beautiful beaches on the Kassandra peninsula.

Ideal for frenzied beach parties as well as for magical sunsets is Fourka, with its renowned Skala (port). A few kilometers north lies the village of Siviri with its famous amphitheater, the site of the annual Kassandra Festival that hosts multiple music and theater performances.

Tips For Thought!

√ The city’s nightlife “beats” in the

traditional Agios Nikolaos borough, where you have many different options to choose from, with many tavernas and coffee shops.

√ Kavala is famous for the many beautiful,

organized beaches at a short distance from the city, such as Perigiali, Rapsani, Kalamitsa, Batis, Toska and Palio. The famous beach of Keramoti, near the town of Chrysoupoli, looks like an island, and it is also the starting point for ferries to Thasos. Finally, do not miss out on a swim at Ammolofoi, a beach with an exotic ambience.

√ At the Ancient Theater of Philippoi, you can catch performances of ancient Greek drama as well as music and dance events, which take place in the summer months during the Philippoi Festival.

International Festival and get to know other cultures through music, dance and art events.

√ The Konaki, i.e. the house where Mehmet

Ali grew up, is situated in the square of the old town, and houses a museum. From the top, you can enjoy an unimpeded view of the sea.

√ The Tobacco Museum of the Municipality

of Kavala is the only thematic museum in Europe devoted to tobacco. Kavala was once the largest center of commercial tobacco processing and exports in the world.

√ The Medieval Aqueduct, also known as

Kamares [Arches], dates from the Byzantine era and was used to transport water from the springs in the mountain ranges to the settlement in present-day old town. The 60 arches, of four different sizes with a total height of 25 meters, are an impressive sight!

√ Visit the ancient city of Philippoi, just

17km from Kavala, where you will discover the ancient ruins of Via Egnatia, the Roman Forum, the prison of Apostle Paul, and the ancient amphitheater.

√ At the village of Theologos – once the

island’s capital – wander through the cobblestone streets and taste the traditional local dessert made from walnuts in the small coffee shops. In the month of August, you can experience the revival of the traditional Thasos wedding and other cultural events, such as the honey festival in Limenaria, the Donkey races in Skala Potamias, and the Sardine Festival at the fishing village of Skala Kallirahis.
