A GLORIOUS EXPERIENCE AN EPIC JOURNEY

EDITORIAL
As promised, we have expended every effort and made strategic moves in order to promote the city of Thessaloniki, both through the hotel’s presence in B2B conferences abroad and through hosting them on the hotel’s premises. At the Europe Congress Conference, which was hosted in Greece for the very first time, we were able to bring together in the city buyers from all European markets, who discovered the city’s hotels and learned about its history. Our future plans include similar activities, always in the interest of the city’s development. At the same time, the continuous awards earned by Makedonia Palace affirm the emphasis we place on the basic pillars of hospitality, cleanliness and food, while they also reinforce our motivation to further enrich the benefits and experiences offered by the hotel. Its name is consistently at the top of the list of the city’s hotels, while its long history provides a challenge for the hotel’s staff to continue to evolve and improve, in step with the latest international trends and standards.
Having completed a full year of operation following the radical renovation of Makedonia Palace, we can now say with certainty that we have accomplished the goals we set at the outset: a hotel that meets the highest standards, top ratings and positive reviews, expressions of the most pleasant hospitality experience.
Finally, I have to note the publication of the book “The past and future of Makedonia Palace”, whose 320 pages are dedicated to the 60-year history of this legendary hotel. A wealth of photographic material and documented stories about the hotel’s creation, its evolution, and its famous guests, render this unique edition a very significant credential of the significance of Makedonia Palace for the history of Thessaloniki, as well as the starting point for future publishing endeavors. Because a glorious past portends an even more glorious future…
The difference is in the details…
Sincerely, Alkiviadis Sotiriou General Manager

KATERINA CHALA Reservations Agent
>>> To know us better Katerina Hala was born in Athens and grew up in Loutraki. She studied Tourism Business in Thessaloniki and completed her training at Makedonia Palace, where she stayed on and works to this day, having returned to the Reservations Department, a position where she started her career at the hotel.
>>> Communication & trust
>>> Like a family!
Ms Hala discusses the best part of her job, which is none other than the direct contact with customers, but also the difficulties she faces: “We now know personally many of the guests with whom we communicate by phone or email, because upon arrival at the hotel they ask to meet the person who took their reservation. Good communication is the be-all and end-all of our job. You need to be able to inspire trust in customers, that everything will be exactly as they imagined it. Of course, the pressure of time constraints combined with the large volume of work requires good handling.”
She describes her colleagues as her second family since, having now lived for many years away from her city, she considers Makedonia Palace her home. “I talk with my coworkers more than I do with my relatives. We spend long hours at the hotel and it is important to have a good working environment. We at the Reservations Department work closely with Reception, Sales, and many other departments. I can honestly say that our work would be a lot harder if we hadn’t developed such amicable relationships. Business & pleasure!”

We asked her to provide her own review, now that its has been one full year after completion of the hotel’s large-scale renovation. “I feel truly lucky because I got to experience the renovation from two different departments, since when it started I was still in Sales. The difference is perceptible on many different levels. There were guests who requested specific rooms because of the sea view. Now they also choose other rooms, since there are no longer any differences in interior design and amenities. Furthermore, I am noting increased mobility, meaning we now have high occupancy rates even on dates when in the past we didn’t. On a daily basis we receive messages from customers, repeaters or not, who describe their experience here as unique, and reference with great enthusiasm design details that we ourselves may not have even noticed previously!”
>>> Can you handle it? We wondered if there has ever been an incident that put her in an awkward position and if so, how she handled it. “I have had to deal with a difficult guest, quite annoyed, who had raised his voice in anger. That is precisely the moment when you need to remain calm and try to handle the situation as best as you can. With a steady voice and without allowing your own emotional state to show, you try to calm the person on the other end of the line and find alternative solutions, if the room or date they want is not available. It is very easy for someone to judge solely from a voice over the phone and write a bad review. But the old maxim, “the customer is always right”, still holds true, so we are required to find the right balance. It is definitely a challenge!”

>>> 1st year review
>>> The place to be!
>>> In my words
For Ms Hala, working at Makedonia Palace was a great dream that came true, and she is overjoyed because of it. “Even though I was living in Loutraki, I knew of Makedonia Palace as the hotel-point of reference of Thessaloniki. In every city, there is usually some landmark that becomes part of the city’s very identity. I don’t believe there is anyone, in any part of Greece, who doesn’t know this hotel. Its location, its ambience, its people… Everything is a one-way street that leads straight here!”
We asked her to tell us the first words that come to mind about Makedonia Palace: “Family, view, admiration.” Three simple words that say it all…
>>> My favorites “My favorite niche at Makedonia Palace is the top of the staircase at the back entrance to the hotel. When I need to take a breath, I step outside and take in the view of the sea and the rise of the hotel. Almost every instagram story I post is from this spot! (laughs).”

In her leisure time, Ms Hala goes to the gym, and she also enjoys walking around and shopping in the city center.

Alkistis Maragoudaki By Anny Galinou Photo Panos Giannakopoulos 24 | THEA MAGAZINE
THE MEDIA LADY She is one of the pioneers of Greek television, with a career that started at the very beginning of private television and has left a very distinct, personal mark in the industry. Alkistis Maragoudaki shares with us images and memories from her first steps in the world of showbiz, offers her own take on competition and conflicts both in front and behind the cameras, and discusses her new position at Open Beyond TV station and everything we will see in the new season.
Having begun your involvement with television in 1989, you are one of the first people in the country who have been so substantially involved with the “television phenomenon”, and certainly one of the very few people at the time with related studies in media. Since you started out as a student of the School of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Athens, how exactly did you make the leap to television sets, taking such a radical turn in your professional course?
While studying with a goal to join the diplomatic corps, I also wanted to acquire knowledge – through post-graduate studies – in the field of communications, precisely in order to equip myself better academically. However, at the time I could see that the sector of communications and media was opening up in Greece and would have a vertiginous development. The launch of the free – as we used to call them then – radio stations was immediately followed by the launch of private television. It was something that appealed to me as a challenged and I dared to take the leap.
The first steps in your career actually coincided with the first steps of private television in Greece. How did this coincidence come about? And what do you remember most intensely from that period? That entire era, in addition to the obvious (creation of an entirely new professional reality from scratch, dreams, plans and goals, anxieties and redefinitions), was also characterized by a strong romanticism – an emotional identification with this “new thing” that we were creating. I was one of the lucky few who participated in the birth of this whole new era. And of course I remember every minute of the “birth” of ANT1 TV station.
25 | THEA MAGAZINE
Your résumé is quite impressive, not only because you took on crucial positions in large television channels at a very young age, but also because you survived and thrived as a woman in such a competitive environment. How easy is it for a representative of the female gender to follow in your own professional footsteps and meet such high demands? Did you experience unfair competition practices and if so, to what extent do you feel they were due to the fact that you are a woman?
The fact that I am a woman was never an obstacle to my career. Competition, even the unfair kind, was there due to other reasons. Partly because of my academic background, since there was no one else at the time with studies on the subject of media, and also because of my age. Don’t forget that I was 24 years old when I was asked to join a team and create a new television station. Most other executives came from state television stations and had a completely different point of view, a different pace; they were also of a different age and had a hard time accepting that they would be making decisions jointly with a much younger person.
Your involvement with the media is certainly a career orientation that many young people think about and aspire to today. What are the characteristics that, in your opinion, a person must have in order to work on television – in front of or behind the cameras – and what advice would you offer them? First of all, we need to distinguish the “in front of” from the “behind” the camera. I’ll start with the latter. Those who wish to build a career behind the cameras must be insightful and daring; they must not copy or imitate, they must listen to the trends coming out of society – and consequently from TV viewers – and must never become complacent but continue to seek out that which is new, different, aesthetically pleasing and at the same time commercially viable. Now, for those who wish to become presenters, they must be aware that it is not simply a job but a lifestyle choice. They must make sure that their “exposure” will not degrade them, will not “swallow” them up; they must preserve themselves and their values within this process.
If anyone can judge the present state of television in Greece, you certainly can. How would you characterize the television product that is available to Greek viewers by Greek channels today? What would you change, if you could, and what would you keep as it is?
I believe that Greek television is one of the richest in the world. It has great variety, programs for every taste and every age, and high-quality productions in relation to their cost. One of the challenges is that, compared to other countries, Greek viewers “run through” programs very quickly. For example, abroad we may be seeing the ninth or tenth season of a TV game, while here the same program may lose its dynamic completely after two or three seasons.
Have you ever been tempted to go in front of the cameras, as has been the case with many of your colleagues who used to hold similar positions to you in the past? I wouldn’t do it. It is a mistake. I think when you go in front of the cameras you become the “product” of the product you are trying to create. This cannot happen, because immediately you lose hold of your own product, you can no longer manage it.
Alkistis Maragoudaki 26 | THEA MAGAZINE
In the timeless dilemma between career and family, you have chosen the former, with a clear and decisive position on the issue. Was there ever a time that you regretted it? If you review your life up to this moment, would you say that you have accomplished the goals you had set? And what do you aim or hope for in the future?
There is nothing I regret because in my life I have done and still do exactly what I want to do. If some things did not happen, it means I did not pursue them. As for my future goals, in addition to being healthy, I also wish to evolve continuously. That is the most important thing.
Your latest TV “home” is the Open Beyond TV station, where you have taken the position of Chief Content Officer. What are your duties in your new job and what is the first thing you did when you took over?
My duties are clear and they involve content generation for the entire programming of Open TV. When I started out, I had to handle two things that were happening concurrently. One was Epsilon, the existing TV station with its everyday demands, its programming, and its transition to the new status. The other was designing and generating content for Open, which did not exist as a station, so I wasn’t just putting together the program for a new season, I was putting together the entire station from scratch.
Tell us a few things about the programming for Open Beyond for the new season. What should viewers expect? Open’s programming has everything! The station, as the name indicates, is open to every audience and every option. Talk shows, entertainment programs, hit films, news and sports truly make Open TV the most varied Greek television station right now in regards to the breadth of tits programming. We are not one-dimensional. And I really want to emphasize the Greek fictional series we have selected: the daily show “The Prince of Fire”, whose creator, Giorgos Kyritsis, has endowed it with an amazing plot; the masterpiece “Thou shalt not kill” by Panos Kokkinopoulos which, beyond its sensational stories, has perhaps the most cinematic feel ever on Greek television; and the very fresh comedies “Open relationship” and “Forever children”, each with an amazing cast.
As a career woman with a demanding daily routine and a fast-paced life, what do you enjoy when visiting Thessaloniki? Is Makedonia Palace a hotel that offers you the necessary rest and relaxation that you need? I love Thessaloniki, and it is truly a joy to be able to be here as often as I can. And when my visit here is combined with everything I want from a hotel, then I truly enjoy it. And Makedonia Palace meets all the standards of a luxury hotel: impeccable service, comfort and a home-away-from-home feel, discretion, and exceptional aesthetics. Makedonia Palace is a destination in itself!

Radio host on Imagine 89.7 and one of the most famous voices on the city’s airwaves, Anna Priga discusses her own relationship to this beloved medium, the city she loves, and recommends her own favorite entertainment options. “My show is on around midday. I would say it is a pleasant break during the day. Music news, movies, and anything else that we find interesting. With music choices from different decades, rock, pop, funky, soul. Thankfully, at Imagine 89.7 we can choose from among a selection of countless songs, and in this we are aided by our listeners and their mood. competition on Radio Α103, together with my friend Aris. Happiness is being able to say that you have turned your favorite pastime into a job… I have been saying that for 20 years! I love lifting people’s mood. I love having this communication with my audience, without even knowing them. Especially when I pick a song at random and people tell me they feel as if I picked it especially for them. Thessaloniki has always loved radio. Certainly now, with social media, people can learn everything that’s going on in the world of music much faster – but listeners will always be listeners. They have simply become a tougher audience – and you have to win them over. I hope that radio will hold onto its romantic character and that conditions will become even better for everyone. I wouldn’t change Thessaloniki for anything. I grew up, studied, and have worked here my whole life, except for two years when I was working in Cyprus. My family is here, my friends, and if I ever dared to leave, it would only be for a truly great professional opportunity. Quality of life is better, distances are shorter, and you can never get tired of this waterfront! Unfortunately, in Thessaloniki we don’t often have the opportunity to see great artists live on stage, but there are music and film festivals worth attending every year, as well as smaller live venues that host amazing new bands. All it takes is a little searching online to discover them.” www.imagine897.gr
Ifigeneia Konstantinidou Social Media Manager, Thessaloniki Film Festival Ifigeneia Konstantinidou, Social Media Manager for the Thessaloniki Film Festival, discusses how the festival, one of the city’s most historic cultural institutions, expanded its online presence and entered the social media era; she also describes Thessaloniki in regards to the city’s presence in the sectors of culture and the arts, and recommends the culture events of the season that are not to be missed. “Nowadays, for any cultural organization that respects its identity and its audience, a strong presence on social media is no longer a luxury, but a communication necessity. The digital age favors the dissemination of information through social media, especially for organizations involved in cultural activities. The Festival, under its new management, chose to enter into a phase of extraversion, by opening its screening rooms to wider audiences of different age and interest groups. In the last two years or so, we have tried to put forth a new, uniform branding which, combined with our new website and the organization’s new brand identity, is intended to distinguish us among the multitude of posts for “cultural consumption products” with which we are all bombarded on a daily basis. In this enterprise, I can proudly say that an important part was played by the social media strategy that we designed and implemented, where an effort was made to distinguish and promote the different activities and screenings implemented by the Festival depending on the audiences they are addressed to. A relationship was established with dedicated-loyal cinephiles, and we successfully promoted the activities of the organization, which never ceases to seek out opportunities to bring the audiences of Thessaloniki closer to European cinema.”
“The challenge of social media marketing is not easy, since we operate in a highly competitive environment in regards to cultural standards. We have a long road ahead of us since communication does not stop, ever. Besides, the festival’s relationship with the city of Thessaloniki is a continuous feedback loop. The public’s response, both inside and outside the screening rooms, to the Festival’s digital imprint on social media, is impressive and gives us the energy we need to keep going. Our two biggest events, the Film Festival in November and the Documentary Film Festival in March, are now the pinnacles of year-round activity that has succeeded in creating a vibrant community of cinephiles, whose size is manifest in the enthusiasm with which its members embrace our activities beyond the two ten-day periods of the respective festivals.” “Thessaloniki does a lot and shows very little. The city’s cultural institutions did not get into digital communication until very recently. Unfortunately, when operating on limited budgets, the outcome is not the most satisfactory, compared to the quantity and quality of the cultural events being produced. By observing the cultural events in Athens and Thessaloniki and comparing the number of offerings - always in relation to each city’s population - it is easy to understand that Thessaloniki has amazing potential which, unfortunately, has so far remained unexploited communicationwise.” “Throughout the Festival’s operation over the entire year, you should definitely follow our announcements for special screenings, avant premieres, movie marathons and events that complete the cinema experience, beyond simple movie screenings. In my opinion, cinephiles should
31 | THEA MAGAZINE
not miss the Cinematheque tributes in the Stavros Tornes Hall in the Port; parents should consider the Sunday morning children’s film screenings at Olympion theater, as well as a visit to the Cinema Museum at the Port; and those who love documentary films - and in Thessaloniki, the Documentary Film Festival has succeeded in creating a large audience for them should attend Wednesday screenings at the Port of award-winning documentaries, in collaboration with Cinedoc. Finally, everyone born in 1998, don’t forget you still have two months of free admittance to screenings until the end of the year!”
Five cultural events in Thessaloniki that I would definitely recommend: 1. The exhibition “ALEXANDROS IOLAS: THE LEGACY”, which was unknown to the public at large until it moved to the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art. 2. The exhibition SPRING TORRENTS, with posters from the Harvard strike, at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art (which can be ideally paired with the theatrical performance “GOODNIGHT MARGARITA” by the State Theater of Norther Greece at the Moni Lazariston theater). 3. The PHOTOBIENNALE, with events hosted all over the city. 4. “MRS DALLOWAY” by Virginia Woolf, at Avlaia Theater. 5. …and of course, all the parallel events (exhibitions, workshops, interviews, events, concerts) of the 59th Thessaloniki Film Festival, which will bring the Warehouse venues at the Port back to life. www.fimfestival.gr
Rania Boudouri Make up artist
Rania Boudouri, makeup artist and founder of the Make Me Up cosmetics company, discusses the “beauty” of her job and her demanding daily routine, the reasons she loves Thessaloniki and choses to live here, and she recommends her favorite city spots and events. “As a makeup artist and founder of the Make Me Up cosmetics company, I can say that I took something I love and made it my job! And that is women and their beauty. Every woman is unique and has her own distinct beauty, and the purpose of my job is to highlight their features and recommend the ideal products for each and every one of them.” “My daily routine is not very different from that of any Greek working mother. We get up in the morning and get ready for school. Then it’s on to my work space for whatever is scheduled for that day (makeup, photoshoot, meeting clients, and
many more). Then back home, homework for my son and for me, as I love to keep up with new developments, techniques, trends and everything related to my work.” “Makeup is something I fell in love with along the way. When I was younger I wanted to be a lawyer. I love defending what’s just. However, as a teenager, I felt the call of female beauty. Browsing through fashion magazines, I tried to think of ways to make every woman feel beautiful and attractive, without having to alter her features.” “The city of Thessaloniki is home to many fashion-related events, with the participation of talented people from all specialties. Certainly we wish that there were more, and that there was greater promotion; nevertheless, many celebrities have become nationally famous after starting their careers here. In the future, I hope to see more opportunities for all young people who are just starting out on
their careers, since there are many talented youths who deserve to become known and contribute to the beauty sector.” “I love Thessaloniki and its people! They are friendly, positive, laid back. I love the fact that there are still neighborhoods and you can greet people in the street. Would I change anything? Certainly I would, and there are many changes that need to happen in the city to improve the residents’ quality of life, such as in regards to sanitation and transportation. However, architecturally and regards to the people, I wouldn’t change a thing!” “To someone visiting Thessaloniki I would definitely recommend a walk on the waterfront at sunset, and to see the view of the city from the old fortifications. The city’s beauty will enchant them for life! Another must is to wander the market area in the city center; through the wonderful galleries that are ideal for coffee or food, and certainly the tiny shops where you can find practically anything! Another mandatory visit is to the Modiano market, to discover everything from rare spices to clothing and shoes. In general, the city center deserves our attention, since you can wander around from morning till night, constantly doing different things.” “Another interesting recommendation is Open House, a two-day event of free architectural tours, open to the public, which is meant to provide a better introduction to the city and its architecture.”

Michalis Toursoutzian Intervista
“Until a few years ago, Thessaloniki had a very strong presence in the fashion sector. But today, with the effects of the recession, activity in the fashion industry has unfortunately been severely limited.” “It is known all over Greece that the women of Thessaloniki love fashion and take great care of their appearance, which is characterized by a strong and unique fashion sense.” Michalis Toursoutzian of INTERVISTA fashion boutique, discusses his personal course in the clothing sector, the family tradition of his business, his opinion and perception of the standing of Thessaloniki in the fashion world and of relevant activities organized in the city, and he offers his personal favorite suggestions for entertainment and recreation in the city. “Thankfully, our work does not have a fixed routine. Some days, I need to be present at the store for 12 hours straight. Other days, I get to travel to the fashion capitals of the world, such as Paris and Milan, to discover the latest trends, on buying trips and to attend product presentations. I also devote significant time to the internet, both for information and to monitor our website and e-shop.” “My involvement with fashion was more or less predetermined, due to my family’s long tradition in the garment business. My family has been active in the fashion and clothing sector with stores in Thessaloniki since 1922 - near on one hundred years! So, following my studies on Fashion Buying at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan, I was ready to take over my obligations at the INTERVISTA store.”

“The city center of Thessaloniki is a very interesting area and I would recommend to any visitor to definitely include it in their outings. The central commercial area is quite concentrated geographically and fairly comprehensive, with a wide variety of options. If someone is interested in the latest fashion trends, I would definitely recommend a visit to the INTERVISTA store. For recreation, I would say there are many cultural and artistic events, such as the Thessaloniki Film Festival, performances at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, events and concerts in various venues. Of course, Thessaloniki is also known for its vibrant nightlife that offers all forms of entertainment. A large variety of restaurants can be found throughout the city center, and the city is especially known for its excellent seafood restaurants. In general, our city is renowned for great food and confectionaries.”

Stella Tsiarvoula Head of Administration & Communications Thessaloniki Museum of Photography
The Head of Administration & Communications of the TMP, Stella Tsiarvoula, recounts her personal journey in the enchanting world of museums, discusses the significant distinction of the Museum of Photography as one of the top seven in Europe, reveals how satisfied she is with the cultural events that take place in the city, and recommends her own cultural must-sees! “The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography (TMP) is the only museum in Greece dedicated to the art of photography. It is a distinct part of the Museum of Contemporary Art and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture & Sports. The creation of the museum started in 1998, and in 2001 it was housed in Warehouse A on Pier 1 of the Port of Thessaloniki. Every two years, the museum organizes the Thessaloniki PhotoBiennale, an international photography festival. The scope of the museum’s activities is nationwide, and it has also undertaken important initiatives to promote Greek photography internationally. I have been the museum’s Head of Administration & Communications since early 2016. Our far-reaching actions in search of ideal solutions, within the stifling conditions imposed by the recession, have borne fruit in regards to the museum’s finances, the administration of assets, the organization of its collection of artworks, the planning and implementation of a comprehensive communication strategy, the continued collaboration with other
institutions, and much more. “In 1996, while I was still a student of Systematic Philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), I was hired by the Bank of Macedonia Thrace as an Executive Assistant. A year later, I was transferred to the Bank’s Cultural Center (Museum of Ancient, Byzantine and PostByzantine Musical Instruments) and took over its entire administrative organization. Some years later, and while I was already working with graphic arts firms, creative agencies and publishing houses in the city, I worked at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki in the Department of Public Relations, Events and Publications. In 20132014 I was head of Administrative Support at the Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation of the AUTh. In the meantime, I earned a postgraduate degree in Communications & Culture from the School of Journalism & Media of the AUTh. At the same school, I am in the process of completing my PhD on the subject of “The cultural policy of Hellenic financial institutions”, and this year I am completing a postgraduate study program at the Hellenic Open University, in the field of Management of Cultural Units. “This year, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography was distinguished as one of the seven best museums in Europe. We shared the winner’s podium with 7 great photography museums: of Antwerp, Barcelona, Berlin, London, Paris and Porto, according to the ranking of the Dutch platform “Spotted by Locals”. The criteria were disparate and competition was tough, but we succeeded. All of the people who work for the TMP perceived this distinction as the reward for the effort we put in, under difficult conditions, so that our shared vision will be embodied in a museum in continuous interaction with the community through the daily production of high-quality cultural and educational work. “I am very satisfied with the city’s presence and activities in the art sector. Thessaloniki is at the forefront of innovation, productivity and creativity. There is fertile ground for every form of art, and institutional and other entities provide opportunities to highlight and promote the work that is 36 | THEA MAGAZINE
accomplished as needed. Thessaloniki is no less accomplished than Athens or other European cities. Often, it shows the way forward, for evolution and transformation. Of course there are systemic “pathologies” that often act as inhibitors, but I think it is extremely important that we have identified them and are actively seeking ways to counteract them. In Thessaloniki, I recommend that you definitely visit: Pier 1 in the Port – a neighborhood of museums where something is always in the works. The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the Thessaloniki Cinema Museum, and the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki, which throughout the year offer exhibitions, events, festivals, activities and educational programs open to locals and to the city’s visitors. The Thessaloniki Science Center & Technology Museum “Noesis”, a top-rated, award-winning technological cultural center that meets international standards and offers activities for all ages, combining a museum environment with great exhibitions and entertaining activities and events. The Cultural Multi-venue of the Former School of the Arts & Crafts Hamidie (Islahane): A former machine shop of the Ottoman period in the outskirts of the Ano Poli, which has been restored with innovative procedures by the Bureau of Contemporary Monuments & Technical Works of Central Macedonia. Now it hosts exhibitions and organizes tours, music concerts and literary events. The Roman Forum of Thessaloniki, with its museum and gallery. An underground museum built to state-of-the-art specifications houses the excavation finds and is still in its “infancy”, as it has been in operation for less than ten years. There you can discover the entire history of the city of Thessaloniki from 315 AD up to 1917.

38 | THEA MAGAZINE
An amazing voice and an unadulterated soul. With his career so far, Nikos Oikonomopoulos has succeeded in making audiences love him, not just for his music, but also for the air of kindness and likeability he exudes. Always smiling and cheerful, he speaks about how he started out on his musical “journey”, which elements he considers necessary for a singer, and his view on the domination of reality talent shows – musical or otherwise – while also revealing his upcoming career plans and his goals for the future.
39 | THEA MAGAZINE
You are one of the most famous and most popular Greek artists, and your involvement with the music industry started at a very young age. Please tell us how this journey commenced – where you determined to follow this path, or was singing something that came into your life unexpectedly? I knew I wanted to be a singer since I was a little boy. I always had the “bug” in me, and it eventually became my reality. From the first moments that I can remember becoming involved with music as a child, I always dreamt of myself on a stage, singing for people, having great songs and being remembered by people through them. With reality talent shows dominating TV in recent years, for music, cooking, or other endeavours, how do you judge this new trend? What would be your advice to a young boy or girl who is considering participating in such a show? Times have changed and things are different. Through these shows, many singers have the opportunity to show off their talent and start on the path of their career. But participating in a talent show does not guarantee a successful career down the road. You need to work hard to conquer your goals; television simply provides a “stage” and you must be ready to take advantage of this publicity in a positive way. But to get ahead in our industry, you must really love what you do. Which do you consider the most important moment in your career so far, and which remains your biggest goal for the future? Every year has been important, especially the early years when you need to prove to yourself and to the audience that you are worthy, for what you do, for what you stand for, for your character and your integrity. My goal is to remain relevant in what I do and love; to continue releasing great songs that people will continue to embrace and love. In your opinion, what characteristics must an artist possess in order to conquer success and longevity in the music industry? Three words: talent, personality, morals. Without these, it is difficult to succeed.
Showbiz is a particularly tough and competitive field. Have you experienced this in your career? Have you ever felt the need to “throw in the towel”? There have been many tough times, but I never considered giving up. I love my job very much, I focus on my goal and on my music, and I ignore everything that can affect me negatively. You are an artist who, despite having tremendous professional success, manages to keep a low profile and you maintain your privacy to a very large extent. Would you say that this is actually achievable? And how do you do it? For me, it is a way of life. Throughout my life, I have never tried to impose my presence or my talent. As a person, I like to keep my personal moments for me, and so this is how I operate as an artist, as well. I want people to be interested in my work only, and I feel that to a large extent I have succeeded in this. Have you managed to establish and maintain friendships in your industry? And how easy is it to build and keep a relationship (friendly or intimate) under the glare of the limelight? That depends on the relationship between people, it doesn’t matter whether you are a singer or in showbiz. If two artists become close and they can put their competitiveness aside, it is easy to become friends. In my case, I wouldn’t say that I have established great friendship in my industry, but I have excellent relationships with all my associates and have never faced any problems with anyone. After the success of your single “I don’t love you”, you have released your new single, “Now what am I supposed to do with it”, which is expected to be the hit song of this winter. In just twenty four hours from being released, it is trending at no. 1 on YouTube, no. 1 on iTunes, and looks set to conquer radio airplay. Also, we will continue to enjoy your show at Kentro Athinon throughout the winter. What other plans do you have for the new season? The new season for me begins with the start of my residency at Kentro Athinon, while at the same time I am in the studio recording many new songs, but release dates are not set yet. One of these new songs is “Now what am I supposed to do with it”, and I am very glad that the audience has embraced it so quickly. It makes me happy that, all of these years, people show me that they love my work.

When do you feel truly happy? When I am free and by the sea! Thessaloniki is a city that you are very fond of, and the city’s people also love you very much. What about the city stands out most for you, and what makes you always choose Makedonia Palace for your accommodation?
A Genuine Star
Thessaloniki is a city beloved not just by me but by all of my colleagues, at least in regards to singers. As far as I’m concerned, the love that audiences show me every time I perform in Thessaloniki is immense, and all I can say is that I love them all very much. Makedonia Palace is a gorgeous hotel that won me over from the very first time I visited. I like its ambience, the service is impeccable, and I think it is excellent overall.

TREND REPORT!
The beloved decade is once again in fashion, with key pieces that can help you recreate a total 70s look. Combine flared corduroy pants – corduroy is the season’s “it” fabric – with a turtleneck, or with a silk shirt for a more elegant look, and complete your outfit with a suede bag with fringing. Patchwork patterns on knits and accessories are another must trend for hippie chic outfits.
PRETTY PLEATS Pleats are lending character to the fall/winter skirt designs, which can be ideally combined with oversized sweaters or jackets. Leather, silk and wool skirts are a total season must, and according to the runway versions they are not worn with elegant blouses, since they are intended for more laid-back chic looks. s o c i n r e V a n i r a M
As a nominee for National Geographic Photographer of the Year 2018, Marina Vernicos feels that she has attained her biggest accomplishment so far; at the same time, she is already envisioning new journeys and even greater photographic experiences. The multi-tasking photographer, entrepreneur and happy mother of three discusses how it all started and reveals her thoughts, goals and plans for the future.
You studied Communication and Photography at Emerson College in Boston, and Business Administration at the Extension School of Harvard University. What was the trigger that led to the expression of your aptitude for photography, and which of the two do you feel is stronger in your heart – your business acumen or your photographic talent? My love for photography emerged during a trip to Hong Kong with my father when I was nine years old; he bought me my first SLR camera. I haven’t stop shooting since. When I returned to Greece after graduation and started working in the family business, a friend who had seen my photographs suggested that I should mount an exhibition. That is how it all started. My first exhibition was in 2004. After many exhibitions in Greece and abroad, I decided to evolve my work and started creating accessories with my images printed on them. So tourists can take home an item that visually reminds them of Greece. The collection has now grown into a complete resort wear line.
A very successful businesswoman with your own clothing and accessories line under the “FashionLab X Marina Vernicos” brand, a distinguished photographer with photo projects in association with renowned multinational brands such as Mercedes, Perrier, Napapijri and Folli Follie, an ambassador for Hermès and Omega, and at the same time an affectionate and devoted mother of three. Which of these roles, which you so artfully combine, do you enjoy the most? I enjoy them all equally. It is very important to do the things you truly love. Photography has been my hobby since I was a child, and it remains by favourite pursuit, especially when collaborating with large companies, projects for which I am very proud of. Now that I also have my own clothing and accessories brand, I am enjoying it even more. Of course, as a mother, the most important consideration is to be able to raise my kids well, with ideals, principles and strong beliefs. I hope time will prove me right.
48 | THEA MAGAZINE
Between 2001 and today you have published four books, and you have displayed your photographs in a series of solo and group exhibitions and in distinguished galleries and museums throughout the world, including the Cycladic Art Museum in Greece, the Louvre in Paris, the Hangaram Art Museum in Korea, and venues in London, Monaco and New York. You have also been awarded the “Sandro Botticelli” at the Palazzo Giucciardi Bongianni in Florence and the “La Grand Exposition Universelle” at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Which do you consider your biggest achievement to date, and what is your greatest goal for the future? My greatest achievement came this summer, when I was nominated by National Geographic for Photographer of the Year 2018. Also, this summer, for the second time, the official page of Instagram posted videos I shot with over 4.5 million views each.
Which is your favourite photograph of those you have shot, and what remains a goal to shoot in the future? My favourite photographs change daily. Each day I have a different one I like best. It also has to do with my mood. But now that I think about it, all the images I can think of as favourites are photos of Greece, of Greek light, and especially of the Cyclades. My goal remains to highlight and promote Greece and its unique beauty. As a photographer, to what extent does this capacity affect your everyday life? Are you the type of person who is always on guard with her camera or phone, in case something comes up that “must be captured”, or do you prefer to “cap your lens” when you are not working? Is there something that you were unable to capture in a photograph due to time constraints or the conditions, and you regret it? I do not go anywhere without my camera or my phone. The only thing I have ever regretted are photographs that I was unable to shoot, for lack of time or a camera.
49 | THEA MAGAZINE
You have focused extensively on aerial photography, and a shot you took of the Taj Mahal during your most recent trip to India won you a nomination at a National Geographic Travel photography competition. What did that whole experience mean to you? In the last 3-4 years, aerial photography has become my favourite way to shoot. It is a completely different viewpoint from what I was used to in previous years. I even like the fact that in most countries, flying a drone is strictly prohibited. That is the reason that made the Taj Mahal photograph so special. There have never been aerial photographs of that monument before. It is a viewpoint that no one had ever seen before. I was so anxious about being caught while I was flying the drone, that when I landed it and put it back in my bag, I almost burst out crying. I will never forget it.
Your great fondness for your father, Giorgos Vernicos, is well-known. Which similarities and differences do you note in your respective characters, and which element of his character that you do not share do you envy and wish you could have it too? Also, what do you appreciate in him is a parent and wish to implement in raising your own children?
What does the demanding day of a working, super-active mother of three like you include? Have there been times when you felt inadequate in one of your roles, or that you were out of emotional resources and unable to meet every challenge satisfactorily? My day is the same as for thousands of other women out there who are working mothers. It is not easy, but the outcome is very rewarding. What can be better than earning recognition at work, and being able to hug your children when you come home in the evening? Of course there are times when I cannot meet every obligation successfully, but there is always time to correct your mistakes.
A daughter’s relationship to her father defines her entire life. If you have a good relationship with your father, chances are you will also find a good husband. I am extremely lucky for my father. Ever since I became a mother, I try to implement my father’s tactics, but I don’t always succeed. My father is the most composed and dispassionate man I have ever met. In all my years, I have almost never heard him raise his voice in anger. He has endless reserves of understanding for everyone and everything. He raised me with principles, ideals and strong beliefs.
In addition to photography, you are also a person who loves to travel. Which journey impressed you the most, and where would you like to go that you haven’t been able to yet? The most amazing journey we ever took was to French Polynesia and in particular to Bora Bora. The translucent blue of the sea mixes with the verdant green of the mountains and you think you are in heaven. Bora Bora is in the South Pacific and it is surrounded by a lagoon and a coral reef. The majestic volcanic mountaintops, dazzling white beaches, tropical vegetation, and the gorgeous lagoon are only some of the elements that make Bora Bora so special. The warm, transparent waters are ideal for scuba diving and the colourful tropical fish and coral reefs make you want to stay underwater for hours. We swam with sharks and manta rays every day. The journey I would like to go on sometime in the future is to go around the world on a sailing yacht.
Parallel to your many and varied activities, you are the founder and president of CREAID (www. creaid.com), a non-profit organization that provides humanitarian aid through creativity and art. Please tell us about CREAID activities and how this admirable effort came to be. I come from a family that is very sensitive on issues of vulnerable social groups in our country, and I also wanted to contribute somehow. Five years ago, my friend Myrna Patichi from Cyprus asked 250 celebrities to design a pashmina for charity. I found the idea very successful and told her that I would do the same in Greece. Creaid is a charity organization whose goal is to provide aid to vulnerable social groups in Greece through art. Each year, we hold an auction with a specific goal. For our first auction, we invited 250 celebrities to create a bag. With the proceeds from that auction we bought a mobile medical unit for “Médecins du Monde”. The second year, we invited 100 architects to create a lighting fixture, and used the proceeds to create a playground on the grounds of the Children’s Hospital. The next year, we invited 100 jewellers and asked them each to design and make a piece of jewellery. With the proceeds, we bought machinery that was needed at the Children’s Hospital and made a large donation to “Médecins du Monde”. We will continue to contribute every year, as much as we can.
Having travelled extensively around the world, what is it that you expect and appreciate about a hotel, and what do you enjoy about staying at Macedonia Palace? I have travelled to 121 countries and I have stayed in many different hotels. The most important elements for a hotel are its location, its view and its food. Makedonia Palace meets all three conditions.

Brief Q&A Favorite fashion item: Baker Boy Hat I don’t leave home without: My phone (cliché?) Decade and era that inspires me: The ‘70s for their free spirit Style/garment I hate: Women’s business suits In my free time: Yoga, Netflix, music, sports, cinema
but this changed along the way because of the blog’s appeal and the ever-increasing followers who requested something more personal.
own strategy, with great commitment. I am developing my work consistently and I select my collaborations in light of producing quality content.
Who is your target audience and what makes your blog special? The target audience includes people of any age, but specifically those who identify with my own aesthetic. I believe that I present my topics with a modern and fresh point of view, so it does not limit potential audiences in any way.
The world of fashion is considered especially demanding. Is this true in blogging? Have there been moments when you felt exhausted? It is true that it is a very demanding field – in my case, I am a representative of new trends and I am expected to communicate them in my own way. Success is when this happens effortlessly, and in any case I enjoy it.
In addition to fashion you also love traveling, which is now a big part of your life. Is an international blogging career part of your plans? Having studied in London for three years and having worked between the USA and Hong Kong, being abroad is absolutely an indispensable part of my future plans. Of course I am looking to develop my blog at the international level!
Tell us a few things about your blog. How would you describe it to someone unfamiliar with it? Hiroinetheblog.com is an online destination for people who love street style, beauty, and lifestyle in general, and exotic travel. It is a personal visual storybook of my own view of the world, of fashion and travel, as well as a platform that highlights up-andcoming brands.
How easy is it to become established as a full-time blogger in Greece, and how easy is it abroad? I would say that I was quite lucky, because the period when I first started my blog coincided with the time when the wave of influencer marketing reached Greece. It was definitely a question of good timing, but also of very good management and content generation. I have a very specific plan in my mind about the blog’s evolution and I believe that is the reason why I have succeeded in collaborating with large international brands in Greece. Abroad, there is great competition, because the blogging scene is established and the people who have been doing exceptional work since the beginning have already risen to the top.
How did you decide to start your own blog? It all started in September 2015, when I started my blog in an effort to promote the clothing brand Heyyo Urban Clothing that I was running at the time. The truth is that the original motive was not self-promotion,
Is there competition in blogging? And if so, do you feel that it has affected you, and to what extent? There is competition everywhere, in every sector. I follow it closely because staying informed is important, but I don’t get stressed because I am implementing my 98 | THEA MAGAZINE
Blog vs social media. Which do you like best and which do you consider more necessary for your work? The blog is my personal platform from beginning to end, while social media are my means of communicating with the world. I love the real-time immediacy afforded by social media. I feel that the blog has a much more personal character and longer duration. But undoubtedly, combining both is absolutely necessary. What do you imagine and hope for your future? My goal for the immediate future is an international career in fashion in relation to e-commerce, which is another part of my work, and at the same time to develop and promote my personal brand through the blog. I hope to remain as optimistic and full of energy as I am now. As an authentic traveler, you have certainly visited Makedonia Palace. What were your impressions of it? I believe that it is a jewel in the city’s crown; it has the most amazing view of the waterfront, and I strongly recommend Salonica restaurant and its chef, Mr. Sotiris Evaggelou.
How did you decide to get into vlogging and what led you to choose the world of beauty? When I first started my channel, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do. As a huge film buff, I had studied film directing and I had already cycled through three different cameras, trying to figure out which one best met my needs. For years I watched videos created by others and I was enthralled by this contact with the public and by the bond that existed between youtubers and their audience. I also liked the whole concept of being a creator, of doing everything yourself. From brainstorming the video concept to setting up the lights, filming and editing. I felt that my love for makeup and my shopping mania could finally be put to good use, so beauty was a one-way street. Later came the challenges, the vlogs, and of course the videos with Romeo. Who is the target audience for you channel, and what is your relationship with your audience? My channel is addressed to anyone who wants to take a short break from their routine and enjoy themselves. Whether they choose to watch the vlog, a challenge or a makeup video, they will relax, have a laugh, and even learn a few things. Essentially, we will sit together and have a chat. That is why my relationship with my audience is so unique. They support my every move and even when they don’t like something, they say it in such a nice way that they help me move not one but ten steps ahead. I am very grateful for my audience and together we are moving forward amazingly well. In recent years, a constantly growing number of people around the world become involved with the YouTube and social media worlds, and consequently there is more competition; so what do you think makes you stand out and earns the
love of your audience? One of the things I love about YouTube is precisely that: that anyone who wants to, no matter where they are, can start a channel and share their interests with the world. I have made new friends through social media, so the competition issue is secondary. If you focus on that alone, you will become lost, because you will forget your original purpose and you will become trapped by the numbers and trying to be number one. The good thing about YouTube is that everyone has their own space, and audiences can follow an infinite number of channels. So if you are yourself and people like you, they will stick with you and you will evolve together. Something that I hear often from people when they meet me in person is that I am exactly the same as in my videos. I would say that it is precisely this that makes my audience stay loyal to me every day. Which is your favorite beauty tip? Please share a beauty secret with us. Homemade hair masks! You can make them yourself and they work miracles. I usually use egg, milk, honey and olive oil in various combinations of 2-3 ingredients each time, and my hair is softer and healthier than ever. I leave them in for at least 2 hours before washing my hair and the effect is visible from the very first use. By using homemade hair masks, I was able to grow my hair down to my waist without trouble in just a year and a half! Anyone who looks at your Instagram account will realize that, in addition to beauty, you are also fond of traveling. Which of your journeys was more special for you and why? I will give a classic answer and say New York City. I visited together with all my favorite people, walked all over town, felt the rhythm of daily life, and it was the first time in my life that I put on two jackets, one over the other, to withstand the -21 degrees Celsius temperature! But I must also mention Dubai, where I skied in the desert for the very first time! That was an unparalleled experience, unlike anything else I had ever done, and I would love to do it again! What are your plans for the future? I want to continue to develop my personality, since I adhere to the philosophy that “to live is to learn”, both by experiencing things first-hand and by reading psychology and self-improvement books. I want to evolve my channel and social media accounts so 99 | THEA MAGAZINE
that people will feel that they have found in me the person who will entertain but also inform them. And finally, I want to travel to places where I wouldn’t even dream of going! Have you ever visited Makedonia Palace? What were your impressions? Δυστυχώς δεν έχω επισκεφτεί ποτέ το Unfortunately, I have only been to Thessaloniki once so I have never visited Makedonia Palace. But on my next visit to the city, I think I won’t even consider staying anywhere else! I have heard the best reviews from people who have stayed at the hotel, and it is the first choice of everyone who visits Thessaloniki on a regular basis.

Tell us a little bit about your YouTube channel, “Eleonora”. My YouTube channel is a huge part of my day and something I love very much. I started it about two years ago, and seeing its continued rise I felt, and still feel, very proud. For me, it is wonderful to start something from scratch and be able to shape it as you wish. This is why I like YouTube, because you have the freedom to express yourself as you like and to create what you want. Of course, an important element of my videos is my dog, Romeo, who is clearly the star of the channel, as I like to call him!

How did your fitness journey begin? It began when I was 2,5 years old, when my parents took me to the swimming pool! I never stopped engaging in sports ever since. I was a swimming athlete up until the age of 18 at the swimming club of Paleo Faliro and further on at the swimming club of Vouliagmeni until I was enrolled at the University and fell in love with pilates.

Your Instagram account is getting an exceptional response from the internet world. In your opinion, what is it that makes you stand out and why does your audience love you so? I think that what people really love is seeing the truth in you, realizing that you stand for the things you really love and seeing the essence in what you project to the world.
Brief Q&A The music I listen to when I exercise is: RNB The items I always keep in my gym bag are: What I always have in my bag are the Theraband elastic and my vitamins. My favorite fitness recipe is: Penne with cherry tomatoes, olives and my protein blend. When I am not exercising, I love to: Spend time with my family. My motto is: The pain is instant, victory is eternal.
You are a physical education tutor, the owner of the "Pilates By Mandy & More" Studios while at the same time you are pursuing your academic career by currently doing a doctorate on your field. It is obvious that you are very fond of exercising and that you do not rest on your laurels. Could you describe in a few words what exercise means to you? Exercising is far more than a way of life to me, it is practically my entire life, as I have been engaging in sports activities since the age of 2,5 years old. I have grown through sports, as they continue to be present in all aspects of my life. Sports should be an integral part of everyone’s life and it is vital that it is instructed by people who possess a thorough knowledge of the subject. Apart from social media, we have seen you in other media, such as on the television or on various sites. What would you say best reflects who you are and helps you communicate most effectively in your line of work? In my opinion everything helps, but above all is the personal relationship you build with people. At the gyms where I teach, I help over 200 persons exercise daily and I consider this to be the best advertisement ever; naturally, I believe that television is still extremely powerful in Greece – It simply magnifies what we really are, which is why it is so important to have something of essence to say to the audience.

Since you are also a mother, could you share with us some exercising and diet secrets for other moms who wish to regain their pre-pregnancy silhouette? It’s always best not to stop exercising, as it helps a lot during pregnancy, prepares the body for labor and enormously helps during labor. What I always recommend is the combination of exercise and diet. A good breakfast with fitness cereals, consisting of crunchy whole grain oat flakes, cranberries and pumpkin seeds, is in my opinion the most filing choice to keep our stomach full for longer and to provide all the energy we need to boost our day! Fruits, vegetables and low fat protein are ideal for a healthy diet. And, needless to say, we never forget the water! The social media have a radical impact on how we perceive our body image. What would you advise the young girls following you? Be yourself, always make sure you keep a balance in your diet and love yourselves exactly as you are. There are no models for that; each of us should be our own model. Exercising can be discouraging for many people. What would you advise someone who is just getting started? The most important thing about exercise is to be pleasurable, so that it can last longer and gradually become a way of life. We should take up the type of exercise we truly wish to pursue instead of constantly switching from one type to another, as in this way we will not have the anticipated result. Have you ever visited Makedonia Palace? What was your impression? No, but I would love to come and I am looking forward to your invitation so that we can have a talk in person and exercise together!
How did the idea of a travel blog come about, and especially for couples? It came about from a trip to Indonesia, where we sought tips of the kind that you cannot find in any travel guide. We found what we were looking for from foreign travelers and bloggers and we realized that in Greece there was a “void” in this type of blogging. And so, since we travel a lot and we enjoy writing about our travels, we thought we would give it a try. It was something creative for us to do, and potentially helpful for other travelers. How common is couples travel blogging in Greece and abroad? When we started Yabatravellers.com almost 3 years ago, there was nothing similar in Greece. There were, of course, Greek travel bloggers, but nothing on couples. Abroad, as expected, it was more developed, and also as expected the trend eventually reached Greece. In the past year, several new Greek couples travel blogs have been created. Does traveling and working together with your partner bring you closer together, or does it maybe bring some fatigue to the relationship? Most likely it depends on the couple. The truth is that we enjoy it, because we know each other quite well and we have a good time. However, when the pressure rises, frustration and stress also rise, so it is expected that there may be some tension. But that is human and in our case, it lasts about five minutes. Also, we have allocated our responsibilities, so we act as consultants to each other without interfering in each other’s work. Is it possible to make a living exclusively from travel blogging in Greece? And how feasible is to “expand” your blog’s reach internationally? We believe that it is possible. However, it is not an easy job and the hardest part is that the work you do is not visible to those on
the outside. Also, brands in Greece are not yet familiar with travel blogging, so many collaborations tend to be treated not as business but as gifts. Of course, bloggers bear some of the responsibility for that. In any case, to make a living off blogging you must either have very worthwhile content or a very engaged audience. As for expanding internationally, it can be done, so long as you blog in another language in addition to Greek. Blogging in Greece and abroad. Which are the biggest differences and where does one surpass the other? Some forms of blogging, such as fashion, are now very prevalent in Greece. In fact, it is easier to make a living doing that rather than travel, because the market is much larger. If we were to try to make a more general comparison, we would say that abroad it is seen as a job, whereas here it is still seen as a hobby. Which do you consider your most important tool – the blog or social media? And which do you prefer to update more often? Our basic tool is the blog, and secondly Instagram. Even though we are active on other social media, for those who are into traveling Instagram has a different power – the power of images. We update both our blog and our social media accounts frequently. All of it together comprises what we do. What we have been working on a lot more lately is YouTube, because we want to invest in travel videos and vlog. It is a passion that emerged along the way and we are very interested in it. Have you ever felt the need to “switch off” from constant posting and to travel somewhere incognito? Of course! And we have actually done it. That is why we have been to destinations that are not featured on our blog. As our whole endeavor grows, it becomes more difficult due to our obligations. We have said no to projects because they were not worth the effort. The truth is that you are exposing yourself out there and the best way to not oppress yourself is to be yourself, and to remember that there is life beyond social media. How do you imagine yourselves in the future, and which is your greatest goal in regards to blogging? We imagine our future as being very creative and full of travels. Speaking professionally, we would like to have collaborations that 101 | THEA MAGAZINE

The interchange between black and white marble, the golden details, the marble and wooden floors and recessed lighting create the most luxurious canvas in an area that offers the first impression of the hotel to first-time guests, a perfect representation of everything that follows. In the lobby, guests can relax by the bioethanol fireplace, sink into the comfortable sofas against the backdrop of the light-filled atrium and impressive vertical garden, or indulge in a shopping excursion at the stores that operation on the hotel’s premises. Furthermore, the fully organized hammam baths add to the sensation of rest and well-being.

On the road to
ytognosia...
Eva Karanasiou and Kostas Lahanas are well aware of what it means to earn your life back, making a fresh start from scratch. Two people who, in the past, fought their addiction and won, created AYTOGNOSIA (Greek for self-awareness), one of the first private centers in Thessaloniki that provides treatment and counseling. They speak about their venture, society’s role and the significance of awakening, and about the effective treatment of every form of addiction.
What was the spark that led to the creation of AYTOGNOSIA and what support does it provide to addicted persons? Please tell us about the holistic treatment approach you have adopted. The spark that led us to establish AYTOGNOSIA in 2008 was and still is to provide shelter and help to people addicted like ourselves, in a non-institutional facility, and to welcome them into a large embrace. To make them feel and understand that by coming to us they will not be judged and everything we tell them is not just something we have read about, but something we have experienced.
The main structure of people who staff AYTOGNOSIA consists of drug addicts in long-term remission, with whatever training we have in counseling, as well as a psychologist and psychiatrist. The basic therapy process we implement includes the 12 steps, plus personalized treatment through group therapy and individual sessions. The adoption by the center of a holistic approach to the treatment of addiction means that every part of the person must be taken into consideration, in order to treat the body, mind, soul and spirit, since restoring balance and well-being to the person must be viewed as a whole. 110 | THEA MAGAZINE
What does it mean for someone to “work from the inside out” and what happens after treatment is completed? It means that the treatment provided at the AYTOGNOSIA center is focused on healing the body and soul. Following the initial personalized assessment, we work carefully to evaluate the causes of the problems of each addicted person that we host. This helps us determine if there is some trauma that feeds the addiction. Our treatment programs, which require time away from the addicted person’s everyday life, aim to achieve absolute and intensive focus on the addiction problem,
ultimately helping to treat the mind, body and soul. At AYTOGNOSIA we do not wish to keep our guests isolated from the outside world during their treatment, which is why in the framework of the treatment program they participate in group excursions and 12 step meetings, which aim towards their smooth social reintegration. After completion of the treatment, we continue our counseling and support relationship for as long as is needed. Why should someone choose AYTOGNOSIA for their addiction treatment? AYTOGNOSIA is one of the first treatment centers for addicted persons, with 10 years of experience. The members of our treatment team are chosen not only for their exceptional professional experience and training, but they must also commit to providing personalized care in a wellstructured, non-institutional setting. Here every interested party becomes a member of a group of dedicated people whose shared objective is to achieve long-term remission for people addicted to alcohol, heroin, cannabis, cocaine, prescription drugs, and gambling. Yours is one of the first private centers in Thessaloniki offering treatment and counseling. Do you feel that the field of addiction treatment has received the attention it deserves in Greek society? Addiction is a tremendous social problem and Greek society continues to treat it as taboo, due to a lack of information. In 2018, addicted people are still not being treated as mentally ill individuals, but as people who are weak, transgressive, socially marginalized and neglected by their families. Contemporary science is unequivocal: addiction is a disease. It is a chronic, relapsing disease that causes the compulsive seeking out and use of the addictive substance, despite its harmful consequences to the user. So it is a mistake to treat substance abuse and addiction as a social problem that affects morally weak individuals. Both of you have experienced addiction in the past and have managed to “beat” it. What lessons have you gleaned from your
personal experiences and how do you succeed in communicating them to those who are experiencing similar addictions? The most important message we wish to communicate to Greek society is to finally accept addiction as a disease and not to be afraid to seek help from structures and people who are properly trained in the treatment of addiction. We need to become informed about addiction, before it occurs in our own family environment, so that we may be ready to deal with the problem immediately and successfully, without waisting precious time. We are here to support, guide and listen to people who are suffering from addiction, as well as their families, through a treatment process that for 10 years now has actively provided a solution to the disease of addiction for hundreds of addicted persons and their families. Ask for help; don’t be embarrassed or scared, don’t be an observer of addiction. Together we can take the first step towards a new life away from addiction. Tell us a little bit about the “Tell us your story” campaign, which has famous Greek artists and athletes as its ambassadors. The “Tell us your story” campaign began in December of 2016 as our idea. As founders who have been sharing our own personal stories publicly for years, we wanted to encourage other people to do the same. We hope that in this way, addiction will no longer be viewed as a willful vice but for what it is: an insidious, sidelined disease. A disease that may be “accompanying” our neighbor, our coworker, a relative or good friend of ours. Since its inception, the campaign has had as its ambassadors many important representatives from the worlds of show-business, journalism and sports. These have included Dimitris Ouggarezos, Mary Synatsaki, Naya, Vasilis Koutroumanos, Ivi Adamou, Giorgos Hranotis, Ioannis Melissanidis, Voula Kozoboli, Grigoris Arnaoutoglou, and Kostas Voutsas. In the framework of the “Tell Us Your Story” campaign, the AYTOGNOSIA treatment center for addicted persons is selling t-shirts with the campaign’s logo. By ordering a t-shirt, you are contributing to the distribution of our message and providing financial support to our effort. 111 | THEA MAGAZINE

Makedonia Palace supports the information campaign of AYTOGNOSIA, passing on the message that there is a solution to the problem of addiction. Please tell us about this collaboration. How crucial is the support for your effort provided by such important institutions of the city of Thessaloniki?
Makedonia Palace has actively supported our center by informing a wider public through the “Τell us your story” campaign. It is very important to us that an emblematic city hotel is among the entities that support and help us. The public’s support is especially important to us, since it provides us with the strength to continue our valuable work. Institutions in Thessaloniki and Athens express their interest for the center on a daily basis. We believe that through a collective effort we can achieve much more in regards to the rehabilitation of addicted persons. Every day we communicate with addicted persons who need help and we encounter ever-increasing percentages. We can all help out in our own way, if not in the eradication, than at least in the reduction of the problem.

OUR PEOPLE DREAM TEAM
Four members of Makedonia Palace team spoke to us about their work and the collaboration between them, and made a wish for the most emblematic hotel in Northern Greece.
"My wish for the future of the hotel is that we continue our amazing and successful course..."
Nikos Horiatis Captain Banquet
I am the hotel’s Captain Banquet and my duties include supervising the banquet halls and personnel. My collaboration with Makedonia Palace started in 1996; I have been employed here for 22 whole years! When I was little and used to walk past the hotel, I never imagined that one day I would be working here. Being part of this hotel is the experience of a lifetime. Every day is a new challenge, something new is always happening, and so every day we become better. In regards to my collaboration with my colleagues, I couldn’t think of anything better. Rumors say I am a favorite, because I never lose my smile and every day I put my optimism to work and successfully pass it on to the rest of our team. In the long history of Makedonia Palace there are obviously countless moments that have left an impression, but I will share with you an event that is perhaps my most intense memory. Many years ago, the king and queen of Spain had visited the hotel; they had dinner at the Palataki, the Prefect’s Mansion, and then asked to greet the entire staff in person, by handshake. This gesture, warm and kind, has been preserved unadulterated in my memory. My wish for the future of the hotel is that we continue our amazing and successful course, under the same management and with the same charismatic human resources, and we later hand over the reins to people with dedication, who will further our work for another 100 years.

"My wish is for the hotel to continue to evolve and always make us proud."
I work in the Room Service department and am in charge of the mini bar. My work requires a specific approach, as I enter into our guests’ private space and that requires delicate handling. My collaboration with Makedonia Palace started in 1995 – soon I will celebrate 23 amazing years here. That is why working here is like being with my family, watching it grow and evolve, and it makes me very proud. There are several unforgettable moments from all my years here so far, so it is difficult to pick one specific incident or event. Every day is different, a new challenge. Every day I get to meet people who smile at me or say something nice, and that is what stays in my memory. Relationships with my colleagues are excellent. Given that tensions in the workplace can only ever have a negative effect on our work, there is a spirit of collaboration. As a naturally even-tempered person, I seek out a balanced environment to help us achieve the best possible outcome.
Martha Theofanidou Room Service
I want to see the hotel move forward and bloom. For me it is like a child whom I watch grow, fall down, rise again, and ultimately always succeed, and that gives me great joy. My wish is for the hotel to continue to evolve and always make us proud.
113 | THEA MAGAZINE
I work at the Reception department as Front Office Supervisor. My duties, in collaboration with the Front Office Manager, involve supervising the entire Reception department towards the goal of providing every guest with excellent service and satisfying every request. My collaboration with the hotel started at a very early age, when I first came here as a trainee in the summer of 2007. My experience here has been amazing, because Makedonia Palace is much more than just a hotel. It may sound trite, but my course here resembles a fascinating journey. Every day you face something new; you come in contact with people from all over the world whom you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. Working here is truly unique. There are so many things etched in my memory that it is impossible to pick just one. In any work environment, it is necessary to become a family with your coworkers, because you spend a large part of your everyday life with them. A sense of camaraderie and good collaboration are essential at the hotel’s Reception because our department works around the clock, a fact that brings us closer as a team. In regards to our work environment, I don’t think I need to describe it, it is obvious.
Pavlos Giannopoulos Reception Front Office Supervisor
"My wish is for the hotel to continue its already exceptional course through time."
Our environment is exceptional, and that is apparent in the smile of everyone providing their services. My wish is for the hotel to continue its already exceptional course through time. We were always at the top, so I wish that we will continue our extraordinary efforts to remain at the top.

Sakis Pavlidis Doorman
My position at Makedonia Palace is that of Doorman. I welcome our guests, help carry their luggage, park their vehicles, call taxis, provide them with information about their destination, and always try to satisfy their needs and requests. My collaboration with Makedonia Palace started in 1995. I can say with certainty that working at this hotel is a great learning experience. In my course so far, what stands out for me is the professionalism and skills of my colleagues, who contribute to the impeccable perception of the hotel by the public. And I am proud that I, too, have contributed even a small part to this. There are many incidents and moments etched in my memory, but I will note the change in management, which ended one era in the hotel’s history and introduced an even greater one, in my opinion, bringing a new drive and dynamism to the hotel. Relationships between colleagues are impeccable. Our work environment is the best in the Greek tourism sector, and definitely one of the two or three best overall. My wish for all of us who make up the hotel’s human resources is health and good fortune, since these are the most important things in life and create the conditions for further development and progress.

Sotiris Evaggelou Executive Chef
>>> To know us better Sotiris Evaggelou is one of the most renowned and talented chefs in Greece, with a straightforward and direct character and very interesting views. “I don’t believe I was born a cook. I fell in love with cooking over time. That is, when I learned to cook and discovered what a great achievement it is to be able to compose flavors and create your own proposals, which are completely divorced from the usual and trite. I was fascinated by the culinary world through work, through the magic and evolution of flavor.” Following his studies, he travelled practically all over the world and worked at top restaurants and large multinational chains, before returning to Thessaloniki to take over the kitchen at Makedonia Palace. “I have been fortunate in my career. I have worked in very large hotels and hospitality chains and I am grateful because I always succeeded in holding an important position in all these companies and in evolving all over the world. But beyond work, I have also been able to make friends; I have enjoyed incredible moments and lived through grand experiences.”
118 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> Back to the Roots “My decision to return to Thessaloniki was conscious and clear. I like living in Thessaloniki, I enjoy the city’s everyday life and the friendly attitude of its people. It may be a large city, but there are still neighborhoods. So after a long journey, I decided that I want to work here. Not just because I love Thessaloniki, but because Makedonia Palace has amazing potential, similar to the entrepreneur behind the hotel, Mr. Ivan Savvidis, and this gives me the opportunity to do many things in my field and contribute to the city’s gastronomic evolution.” >>> Food from the heart “We cook a Greek cuisine, from the heart. A Greek cuisine where you sit at your table and the food that you are served makes you experience a sense of warmth; it brings back the flavor and invokes memories from your mother’s kitchen. That is, you will see a pot roast with seafood that you used to eat at the Sunday table, you will see roast lamb with potatoes and vegetables, you will see authentic pasta dishes with fresh ingredients and side dishes, our incomparable soups, you will feel warmth and comfort and you will taste your mother’s food. Flavors that speak to the heart of every guest who visits us.”
>>> The Makedonia Palace... taste experience “As a chef, I am a fan of Greek cuisine. For me, this is a one-way street. I believe that it is my duty to cook Greek dishes in their authentic form, in order to provide continuity. Greek cuisine is one of a kind; it has such flavors and aromas that spring from our own local products and a uniqueness that makes it different and incomparable. But as a country we have not succeeded in promoting it successfully and giving it the value it deserves, so that it can take its rightful place in the world and we can establish our country as a global gastronomic destination. That is my purpose here, ever since I became the executive chef at Makedonia Palace. Salonica is our main restaurant. In it, we want to offer authentic flavors and our primary goal is to promote Greek cooking as much as possible, both to our patrons and to hotel guests. Anyone who visits the hotel and decides to have dinner here with their friends, we want them to leave feeling that they have had an authentic gastronomic experience of Greek cuisine.” Mr. Evaggelou also gave us a small “taste” of the upcoming gourmet activities of Makedonia Palace for the coming season.
120 | THEA MAGAZINE
“At Makedonia Palace, we never cease our gastronomic activities. We are always moving forward and preparing our new menus with respect to the seasonality of ingredients, making changes always based on local products in season. Right now we are preparing our winter menus and looking forward to the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, for which we have prepared exceptional surprises for our patrons and the hotel’s guests.”
>>> On Duty “At work, I am only competing against myself,” confesses Mr. Evaggelou. “I always try to review what I did during the day, what I did right or wrong, so that tomorrow I can do better. With each passing year, I have always moved forward trying to improve my own weaknesses.” Sotiris Evaggelou does not believe that there are specific characteristics that make a good chef. But he does believe strongly that it is a job that you must do by conscious choice. “It is a very tough job, and to be able to get past this, you must love cooking and feel that you are part of this relationship. In my kitchen, I am interested first and foremost in characters; in being able to form a team that will work harmoniously and that will be able, through daily effort, to move forward, to learn and evolve. I want anyone who has been through my kitchen to go on and do great things and build their own career in our field. This is my goal, and this is what I will continue to do as long as I am in this line of work. That is why my relationships with all my colleagues are excellent.”
>>> Kitchen Inspiration “I have worked in many countries in Europe and Asia. I can’t say that any one of these cuisines stands out for me. Each country and each people have their own gastronomic culture, their own flavors, their own customs. Whatever is foreign to us has its own magic and we categorize it differently in our mind. Certainly Asian countries have a certain something, something exotic and magical, beyond our own everyday reality and perhaps we have a different perception of them in our minds. There is also haute gastronomy in places such as Paris or Monaco. In general I believe that if you want to move forward in your work as a chef, you need to travel abroad, to have new experiences and stimuli, to see new images, so that eventually you can create your own unique proposal. For me, the ideal would be to combine work abroad and work in Greece.”
Sotiris Evaggelou
>>> The hard and the fun part The greatest cost of working as a chef, according to Mr. Evaggelou, beyond the daily effort, is that you end up neglecting your nearest and dearest. “This job is hard, demanding, and there are no holidays or fixed business hours. You need to be dedicated to it to do it well. But it also offers great satisfaction. The greatest reward is when you see your restaurant full of patrons who are smiling and have enjoyed their meal. When you see people satisfied, that also offers you satisfaction. You feel that you have done your job well, that you offered them an exceptional experience that they will always remember, and that their visit to your restaurant will be a point of reference for them. Food is an important aspect of living well.”
>>> Awards
>>> Love to...
Mr. Evaggelou took over the kitchen at Makedonia Palace at a time that coincided with the hotel’s reopening following its radical renovation; in this new era, he has won important distinctions. “When you do good work, it makes sense that you will earn distinctions which, for me personally, do not mean a whole lot,” he says. “I don’t mean that I do not respect and appreciate awards, but that the purpose of cooks is different. However, for the younger people it is a way for them to feel rewarded, a recognition that they are on the right track, and it gives them strength to keep moving forward and evolving.”
“I love football, because I used to play when I was younger. Ever since I can remember myself, I have been a fan of PAOK FC. It is a hobby for me, a way to escape the daily grind. In my free time, I walk a lot around the city. I love the waterfront in Thessaloniki, the marketplace and aromas that come out of the Modian and the flower shops, and I often visit taverns and small venues with friends for a drink, a glass of wine or tsipouro.”

souroti.gr
The lack of drinking water in the Thessaloniki region at the beginning of the 20th century activated the hydrogeology services of the French Army and therefore the sources of Sourotis were discovered. At that time, the first bottling plant of natural mineral water was created in Greece. Recently, SOUROTI SA celebrated its 100 years of operation, so perhaps we are talking about the longest bottling company of natural mineral water! Today it is the most popular natural mineral water in Greece and one of the richest mineral waters in the world. It springs from the homonymous historical source, at Mount Holomontas, which, according to scientists, is estimated at 120 meters deep, which is considered ideal for "mineral" sources. The speed of the water in the underground is slow and, passing through a variety of rocks, on one hand it is filtered and on the other hand it is enriched with beneficial ingredients, which give it its particular mineral composition and its distinct flavor. The water at source is cold throughout the year, with a constant temperature of about 16 ° C. SOYROTIS's water has been recognized since 1991 as Natural Mineral Water, with its specific characteristics, calcium, magnesium, acidulous, oxycarbonated, according to European and Greek legislation and is included in the European List of Natural Mineral Waters. It is rich in acid carbonates, valuable mineral elements and trace elements (such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, lithium) which are essential, just like vitamins, for the good
body health and the well-being. One liter of SOUROTI offers about 1/5 of the daily calcium needs and about 1/6 of everyday magnesium needs of an adult's. It is highly digestible and refreshing water, which normalizes the function of the digestive and urinary system. SOYROTI contains no calories or preservatives. Analyzes have shown that its "mineral" content is the same as that of 1914, when the first analysis of the water was made, proving the unchanging quality in time.
