A DAy for VolVo A couple of months ago, CMME received a rare honour – an invitation to Volvo Days, Volvo CE’s customer demonstration event and press outreach programme on its home turf in Eskilstuna, Sweden, where the company was born more than a century ago. While this was the 60th edition of what has become a fixture on the international equipment industry calendar, the honour for your favourite magazine – and, by extension, for yours truly as its editor – lay in being the only publication from the entire Middle East to be invited to this landmark event. Not only was Volvo Days this year bigger than ever before in terms of the number of machines taking part in the demonstration and the test drives, it was also one of the first and probably the biggest showing of Volvo’s new rigid hauler range, especially the flagship 100t R100E. In a measure of the importance that Volvo attaches to the rigids, they were driven into the brilliantly choreographed demonstration by Melker Jernberg, Volvo CE’s new president. While the Volvo boss’ somewhat deficient hauler driving skills – only when compared to the expert operators conducting the demonstration – were carefully camouflaged with shooting flares and fireballs, nothing could mask his unbridled enthusiasm at being probably the first company head to participate in a Volvo Days demonstration. And it was this enthusiasm that showed explicitly on every Volvo CE employee’s face at the event. It was clear from the way they went about their jobs that they were enjoying themselves, with the crisp Swedish summer weather no doubt aiding the process. That enthusiasm rubbed off on the assembled global media army as well, as the day went

on and we got to test the numerous machines around the demanding sprawl of Volvo’s customer centre. The rigid haulers did prove to be among the stand-out machines on that bright June day. And even brighter news for the Middle East is that the machines, made in Motherwell, Scotland, are being released for unregulated markets, including this region, even before the advanced markets in Europe and North America get them. Elsewhere in this issue, we take a look at all-terrain cranes, skid-steer loaders and offhighway tyres. While the first two are staples on Middle East job-sites, it’s the tyres they wear that make or mar their performance, the manufacturers of these special rubber products tell CMME. While the summer weather in the Middle East makes one yearn for the salubrious climes of Sweden, the end is in sight for our scorching summer. The heat will have abated by next month and the region will no doubt shake off its summer slumber and dive with enthusiasm into another winter of projects and job-sites. That’s probably when a bit of the Swedish enthusiasm escapes its bleak winter and comes here for a change!

Announcing the delivery last month, Al-Bahar said the fleet comprises a mix fleet of both Cat Lift Trucks and UniCarrier forklifts, which will enable Kibsons to expand their warehousing operations and increase efficiency at their new facility in Dubai’s Al Aweer. Husainy Sharbat, head of operations at Kibsons, said when expansion plans were underway at its cold storage, the company was looking for solutions to specifically fit with their narrow space requirements. Mamoun Mutair, product manager, Building Construction & Paving, AlBahar, said: “Having understood their unique needs, we proposed narrow

aisle reach trucks with their body chassis integrated with VNA mode of forklifts. This was ideal for use in narrow spaces. They also requested for additional switches for directional control and operator protection along with a comfortable cab. Our equipment addressed these needs with its proven ergonomics for operational efficiency.” Al-Bahar offered eight units of UniCarrier’s ALL 200 low-lifter truck, and three units each of their UHD 200 reach truck and URS 150 free-range reach truck. The fleet was completed with three units of Cat EP20 lift trucks. The final products included fork-tilting options and modifications were made for usage in cold stores. Al-Bahar also provided an exclusive customer support agreement, including one year or 2,000 hours of field service.

Dubai-based regional crane services heavyweight, Al Faris, recently performed a series of heavy lift operations for a power plant in the emirate in a job that included lifting 12 generators of various sizes and weights, going up to 404t, in confined spaces. Al Faris said the lifts had to take place in-between existing structures at the power plant and the

space constraints required meticulous planning. After careful consideration and calculations, the company opted for its Liebherr 1000t-capacity LR 11000 lattice boom crawler crane as the most suitable heavy crane to safely carry out the heavy lifts. The lift was planned and done by Al Faris’ team of experts, and all technical support

documentation, execution plans and schedules were prepared in-house, which helped to organise all activities from beginning to end with minimum delays. The crane was used with an SDWB2 configuration (main boom 48m, luffer 30m) while lifting the 404t generator. It was the largest lift Al Faris had ever performed with a single crane.

Five Raimondi towers for UAE’s Nurol

Italian tower crane specialist Raimondi has delivered five new tower cranes to Nurol Construction Co. in the UAE, which the contractor has put to work at two large-scale developments by Emaar Properties. Raimondi, owned by

Dubai-based KBW Investments, said the cranes delivered to Nurol are two LR213s and three MRT294s. As part of the after-sales package and client care for Nurol, Raimondi’s Middle East operations team executed five three-day crane operator trainings, and will

continue to perform monthly maintenance and servicing when required throughout the duration of the projects. The five cranes are currently erected at two separate Emaar Properties job-sites. While the three MRT294s are working at The Cove

Bristol demonstrates firefighting equipment

Abu Dhabi-based firefighting services and equipment specialist, Bristol Fire Engineering, held a live demonstration last month of the latest technology in aerial hydraulic platforms for senior government officials. Delegations from the UAE ministry of Interior and Civil Defence departments were shown “the extensive capabilities of the new ‘FL60XR Bronto Skylift’, with its new control system generation

(B+5), at a series of events held at the Muweilah fire station in Sharjah”, said Bristol. Capable of extending to up to 60m, the Bronto Skylift has been designed to address the increasing need for civil defence teams to access greater heights and tackle blazes in residential, office and hotel skyscrapers across the UAE, the company added. A truck-mounted platform system, the FL60XR’s telescopic hydraulic design, complete with a turntable ladder, gives increased versatility and usability. The machine has a horizontal outreach of 31.5m, a maximum rescue cage load of 500kg and a transportation length less than 12m, with advanced collision guard sensors.

Bobcat’s telehandlers have come in for praise from contracting company Fujairah National Construction Co. L.L.C (FNC) for their performance, reliability and durability. FNC bought the Bobcat T40180 18m telehandler, the flagship of the small cat’s telescopics range, in late 2015 from Dubai-based Kanoo Machinery, the Bobcat dealer for the UAE. According to FNC, the T40180 has provided trouble-free performance since it arrived, already completing well over 10,000 hours on site. The T40180 has been working two shifts a day throughout this period and has been used on three major contracts, including two new 18-storey buildings. Farhan Mahmood Rizvi, engineered equipment and plant manager at FNC, said: “We have been delighted with the performance of the Bobcat T40180 telehandler. We make sure we look after all the equipment in our fleet, according to manufacturers’ servicing and maintenance guidelines. We closely monitor all the components and performance of our machinery, ensuring all aspects such as greasing, oils and fluids and genuine parts

are used in full compliance with these guidelines.” According to Kanoo, the record of the T40180 is typical of what can be expected from the Bobcat telehandler range in the tough working conditions in the Middle East. Over the last two and a half years, the T40180 has required only normal servicing under the preventative maintenance programme recommended by Bobcat. Its performance is a perfect illustration of the reliability and durability that customers can expect not only from Bobcat telehandlers, but also Bobcat skid-steer and compact loaders, compact excavators, backhoe loaders and attachments in the exacting conditions found in the Middle East, according to the manufacturer. “We have used the Bobcat T40180 for a wide variety of applications, from lifting rebar from trucks for foundation work to moving heavy materials such as components for steel work in buildings. The dependable safe lifting offered by the T40180 when used both with the wheels alone or with its stabilisers deployed has been an important aspect for us. The stabilisers also ensure the machine’s full capabilities can be used in confined areas.”

Demag craWler builDs croatian port crane W hen a shipyard in Croatia needed a heavy-duty crane to build an offshore platform crane in a project that required braving a number of special challenges and extreme weather conditions, it turned to a Demag CC 3800-1. Project manager Ivica Serlija from crane service provider Zagrebtrans knew from the very start that the Uljanik shipyard job would be associated with a number of demanding conditions. They would have to lift 400t components for the assembly of the offshore platform crane and the estimated time for the job was six months, a period that covered virtually the entire range of weather conditions in Croatia, including the hot summer months and notorious thunderstorms with powerful winds. In terms of equipment, the team had to find an optimal solution for the conditions and the lifts. “We decided on our most recent acquisition – a new Demag CC 3800-1 lattice boom crawler crane. A number of factors made it the ideal choice, with the two most important being its enormous power and its long boom length,” Serlija says. Around 50 trucks were used to transport the CC 3800-1 directly from the Terex plant in Zweibrücken to the shipyard. The convoy required just under seven days for the journey of more than 1,000km, and the five-person Zagrebtrans team took approximately the same amount of time to get the crane ready for lifting at the shipyard. The chosen configurations for the upcoming lifts were SSL 1 with a boom length of 72m, LSL 11 with a boom length of 102m and LSL 13 with a boom length

of 126m, as well as 22-part reeving. The counterweight was 225t, an additional 325t Superlift and 50t central ballast. With these configurations, the CC 38001 was ready to tackle all the lifts. The heaviest load weighed 400t. Other components had to be lifted to a height of 102m or set down at a radius of 52m. All the lifts followed the same basic pattern: the loads were picked up and lifted, the superstructure rotated 180 degrees in the direction of the platform, and the crane travelled forward under load. Once the defined end position was reached, the load was set down on the platform at the exact position required for assembly there. Zagrebtrans had two crane operators on site, and both attest that the CC 3800-1 showed extraordinary performance and precision during all lifts. In addition to the unit’s enormous lifting capacity, compact dimensions and ability to travel even under heavy loads, they found the Vario Superlift system to be invaluable for the tight space, as the system is designed to reduce the counterweight tray radius during a lift. For both the crane operators and the assembly technicians, the CC 3800-1’s ease of use was evident throughout the project. Nevertheless – as is the case for the first project with any new crane – there was a Terex Cranes service technician at the site to provide the Zagrebtrans team with support during the first crane set-up and heaviest lift. “This was a service offering we were all too happy to take advantage of, especially since Terex team members are extremely dependable and trustworthy. And since the chemistry and communication between us was perfect, we found the contact to be extremely helpful,” Serlija says.

“We decided on… a new Demag CC 38001 lattice boom crawler crane. A number of factors made it the ideal choice, with the two most important ones being its enormous power and its long boom length”

UNtiriNg service CMME gets a grip on the off-the-road tyre segment where specialty manufacturers are using new technology to build longer-lasting products with better performance

N

o matter how good a wheel loader, backhoe loader, wheeled excavator, skid-steer loader, mobile crane, dump truck or any other equipment a manufacturer may make, its performance ultimately depends on the quality of connection with the ground or its contact patch. The most powerful loader cannot dig into the rubble or materials it is being used to scoop up, lift and load if its tyres cannot find the required tractions and its wheels are slipping. Similarly, the massive dump trucks used in application such as mining and to move hundreds of tons of excavated earth would stop dead in their tracks and not move a single kilogram if not for their huge, purpose-built, specialty heavy-duty tyres. Just like the best thoroughbred horse is not derby a winner without proper shoeing, the best rolling equipment is a liability without the right tyres. Specialists in off-highways or off-the-road (OTR) tyres are well aware of this. One of the well-known names in the OTR segment is Dutch giant Magna Tyres. For a tyre manufacturer that started production only in 2006, Magna Tyres has indeed come a long way and left its indelible tread marks on construction, mining, plant and other offroad sites all over the world. The company traces its

15 Off-highway tyres are a specialty area where manufacturers such as Magna, BKT and now Continental are bringing in new products and technologies.

“Having MTP in our offering makes us able to provide total solutions for a broad spectrum of customers – from the small end-user to the big fleet owner, mine operator and equipment rental company. We sell both MTP and Magna brands in the Middle East through the same distributors”

origins to DRI Rubber in Waalwijk in the Netherlands, a family-owned business making rubber compounds for more than 42 years, producing master batches of rubber compounds, the raw material out of which tyres are made, for the global market. It was only a matter of time before the family-owned business forayed into tyres, taking advantage of its compounding business. Magna Tyres now has three production bases globally, in China, Taiwan and in Holland, from where it supplies OTR tyres for the entire world. Vijay Nambiar, GM for the Middle East, Africa and Indian subcontinent at Magna Tyres, tells CMME: “As a specialised OTR player - and also having our own rubber compound business in the same group - we have the expertise that helps us create some of the best-quality products in the business. We are currently supplying tyres to 130 countries globally. From our Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) office, I’m in charge of the entire Middle East, Indian sub-continent and Africa, except South Africa. As a geographic spread, this is the biggest area for Magna and my general estimate is that this area contributes at least around 35% of the company’s sales.” Having a rubber compounding specialist as your parent company is always a good thing, Nambiar adds. “This is an advantage for us and we are able to hold some 12% of the mining tyres segment worldwide. We always analyse the territories we operate in and the usage patterns of our customers. Generally, in the mining or OTR tyre segment, advantages are calculated on a cost-per-hour (CPH) basis rather than the cost-per-kilometre calculation more prevalent in the commercial tyre segment. When we talk about the CPH of Magna’s tyres, we consistently provide the segments we serve with the best CPH figures, which means they get more value for money and return on their investment when using Magna Tyres.” Magna is a major player in the coveted OEM supplier arena, with a huge 28% of its business coming from the OEMs, Nambiar reveals. Apart from Magna as its premium product, the company also has a second range of OTR tyre products, called MTP, aimed at those customers for whom buying Magna may be a stretch in terms of their budgets. “Having MTP in our offering makes us able to provide total solutions for a broad spectrum of customers – from the small end user to the big fleet owner and mine operator, and equipment rental company. We sell both MTP and Magna brands in the Middle East through the same distributors,” Nambiar says To customises its products for Middle Eastern jobsites Magna has developed specialised tyres which made out of special compounds to meet the high temperature requirements. “The MA04 is our giant OTR tyre range for the mining segment. We now have the MA04+ for giant rigid dump trucks like Cat 777 and Komatsu 785. The tyre has more depth and cut resistance. Our M Terrain range is for the articulated dump trucks. Its special feature is 60mm of rubber, which means a higher volume of rubber to wear out. We also have launched the M Terminal for port terminal tractors in two sizes – 310 and 280.” Meanwhile, Continental, more famous for passenger

car tyres, also offers a wide range of OTR, or what it calls commercial specialty tyres. Hamzeh Afaneh, head of sales for commercial specialty tyres at the German multinational giant, says Continental produces OTR tyres in three different segments: material handling, earthmoving and agriculture. “There are a few mega projects in the region where our tyres are running. We are seeing increasing demand year-by-year and I would say Continental has roughly 8-12% of the OTR tyre segment in the region,” Afaneh says. Continental was absent from the

earthmoving and construction segment for a while and concentrating on the material handling segment but is now back to these areas again with renewed energy, he adds. “We introduced our radial tyres and started with the fast-moving sizes for wheeled loaders, and small and medium dumpers. We are expanding rapidly and adding more sizes that are needed in the region. The earth moving segment is very important for our region, and therefore for us, especially in the surface mine and the underground mine applications. “Many major projects in the UAE and in

Saudi Arabia, especially in the mining sector use our tyres. In Saudi we have more than six mines as our customers. We also have big projects in Kuwait, where are tyres are running at a big urban construction project. It is most important for us to be available in the right places with the mega projects and big clients.” The most dangerous and challenging thing for OTR tyres in the Middle East is the heat build-up in tyres, Afaneh says. “It is the main reason for high maintenance cost and vehicle downtime. So we first developed our radial tyres where we can reduce the heat buildup with the way the tyre is constructed. And then we used the art of the technology to provide the full solution for our customers. We integrated new systems called Conti Pressure Check and Conti-Connect to our service. Today, in the earthmoving segment we ship our tyres as intelligent tyres, where we pre-install sensors inside the tyre and ship it to end-users as an integrated solution for the tyre. “This system constantly measures the temperature and the pressure of the tyre. It can be used as only Conti Pressure Check, or we can make it even more advanced to the Conti-Connect solution. It is giving you readings for two parameters, the heat and the temperature, monitoring both in real time and if there is a differentiation or there is a reduction in the inflation pressure of the tyre than it will sound an alarm directly to the driver to stop the vehicle and being the inflation pressure back to the proper level. “The purpose is to not only increase tyre life but also the safety of the vehicle and the driver. In OTR operations we are working in very

17 difficult conditions with very heavy equipment, so safety is paramount. And this is how we differentiate ourselves from competitors and build our reputation - by not be only being a product supplier but a solution provider.” Reputation is also what the business of another global leader, BKT, is all about. Established in 1988, the Indian giant’s extensive product portfolio is suitable for application in the industrial, construction, earthmoving, port, agriculture and other sectors all around the world. According to Rajiv Poddar, joint managing director, BKT, the company’s Middle East market is dominated by the construction segment while mining, quarrying, port operations and material handling are also big. “BKT is present in Middle East since 1995 and has developed many products suitable for the climatic conditions of the region. We have a strong customer base and the region is serviced by a dedicated team of sales, service and product development personnel,” he says. “BKT is focusing on its range of All el OTR Radial tyres which include tyres for rigid and articulated dump trucks, wheel loaders, motor graders, reach stackers, straddle carriers and multi-purpose vehicles. We also offer a full range of product in bias construction for all these categories. Our premium range of All Steel Radial tyres, ‘Earthmax’, is offered in various compound options, catering to the extreme heat of the Middle East. For construction consumers, our value for money and reliability the biggest selling propositions. BKT uses state of the art equipment in its manufacture and conducts more than 400 specific tests, from the raw material to the finished stage to ensure that only the best

quality tyres reach our customers.” BKT’s recent launches in the region include OTR tyres, including giant sizes for rigid dumpers, wheel and backhoe loaders, graders and ATCs, among others, informs Poddar. The market is serviced through a network of distributors and dealers in each country, and BKT works with strong partners in the Middle East and has direct importers in all markets. “BKT is committed to provide an excellent product experience to all end users. All BKT products are backed up by a manufacturing defect warranty. In addition, BKT regularly

conducts training programmes related to tyre safety and maintenance for end-users to ensure higher awareness,” explains Poddar. “BKT offers highly-reliable, quality products with one of the best cost-perhour performances. What sets BKT apart, though, is its accessibility and openness to communication. Our teams respond quickly to ideas with prompt action, backed up with commitment. Our new, state-of-theart manufacturing facility in Bhuj, India, is a testimony to BKT’s commitment for becoming the best-in-class in this segment.”

erhaps it’s the cold and darkness of the Nordic winter that compels the Swedes to make the most of their short but beautiful summer. Or perhaps it’s a love for tinkering indoors during those long, bleak winters with machines that they then want to try out outdoors when the sun is shining and the snow has melted. Whatever the reason, the folks at Volvo sure know how to have fun. And, at the last count, they’ve been having fun now for 60 years and counting almost every summer at the annual Volvo Days. The salubrious town of Eskilstuna, around a 100km west of Stockholm welcomed an army of people and journalists from the world of construction in June this year when Volvo CE hosted the 60th edition of it’s the Volvo Days customer outreach programme on a brilliantly sunny day at the end of an otherwise rainy month of June in Sweden. Located in the town where Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) began life in 1832, the recently-renovated Volvo Customer Centre is the jewel in the company’s crown. The facility spans 75 hectares and houses more than 80 machines with the space to demonstrate them all, highlighting the full extent of their potential. In June alone this year, more than 5,000 visitors stepped through its doors. In his welcome presentation, Melker Jernberg, Volvo CE’s new president and member of the Volvo Group Executive Board, says: “We will look back to this period as the starting of a new era. If we calculate from 2015, we have decreased the CO2 from our machines by some 5m tonnes. When it comes to our production facilities we’ve gained 33 gigawatt hours of energy which is approximately 3% per year. And our articulated hauler manufacturing sites are our first CO2 neutral facilities. Moreover, our plant in Bangalore is the first all-solar production site.” Jernberg had earlier participated, along with Carl Slotte,

president, Volvo CE Sales Region EMEA, in a demonstration of Volvo machinery at the centre’s grandstand area, in wonderfully choreographed and synchronised dances of excavators, loaders, dumpers, pavers and more, set to a vibrant and lively musical score. With the memory of that performance fresh in the minds of the international press facing him, he adds: “This was my first big demo event and arguably the first time a Volvo president has joined the machinery demonstration. When you see it so close, it makes you really proud of the machines, the people and the technology that Volvo has developed. The message that Carl and I would like to give through our personal participation in the show is that it is very important for the whole company to be very close to our customers, very close to our products and very close to our services. “Our emphasis on sustainable development also has a direct impact on our customers. We can see that it is part of ambitious ecological goals in many countries. With many big projects selecting greener machines, sustainability pressures is a reality for our customers today. They also have a tough act in terms of safety demands, and we are demonstrating a lot of that to you here today. Big projects often have very tough deadlines, so the uptime is extremely important. We realise how important profitability is to our customers and this includes total cost of

More than 80 Volvo machines were part of the demonstrations and test drives at Volvo Days 2018, from excavators and haulers to wheel loaders, pavers and trucks.

operation. All of this fits into the way Volvo CE products and services are built and delivered. “So how do we balance all of this? Our view is that to have sustainable development, you need it to happen to all stakeholders. You need it to be sustainable for customers, employees and owners, and also for the planet. Volvo has seen encouraging results in recent times.

We’ve had a positive first quarter of this year following on from a positive year in 2017. But to be good means to be good not only in good times but also in not so good times in a business that is obviously very cyclical. So our motto is ‘Building tomorrow with a purpose’.” Jernberg adds that meeting customers’ growing challenges, such as of safety requirements, increased uptime and reduced costs, is the focus for Volvo. “We’ve had a strong financial performance recently, with market growth in almost all regions and a recovery in the mining segment. To capitalise on the favourable global conditions, we have a strong product line-up in all segments. Our strong market position in heavy machines has been enhanced by our investment in our new rigid hauler and in driving excavator sales,” he says. Volvo’s strategy now is to grow through expanded service solutions. “More efficient customer operations and a greater drive for uptime services is the way forward as we become a connectivity business enabler.” Connectivity, automation and electromobility are the three buzzwords for Volvo CE’s future, Jernberg emphasizes, which the company will achieve by use of 5G technology. “The goal is to maximise uptime and safety while minimising emissions, and we will continue leading in innovation to achieve them,” Jernberg explains. Speaking about Volvo machines, he says: “We are a global market leader in articulated haulers and also gaining market share in the compact machines in almost all major markets. Our excavator sales are up, and our new rigid haulers have been very well received.”

23 Presenting the Volvo kit being demonstrated at the event – and available to test drive – Melker says one of the most popular models at the Customer Centre this summer has been the new 100t Volvo R100E rigid hauler. Launched in April, customers have been keen to learn about and test-drive the mighty machine. Paul Douglas, Volvo CE’s vice-president of rigid haulers, adds: “The R100E is the new flagship product designed, built and distributed from the Volvo rigid hauler facility in Motherwell, UK, which has over 65 years of rigid hauler expertise. It’s a completely new machine that delivers stability, a long service life, high profitability, durability and comfort. And it’s simple to operate and maintain.” Other popular new models at the event included the L350H, L260 and upgraded L60H, L70H and L90H wheel loaders, the EWR170E short swing radius wheeled excavator, the ECR355E short swing radius crawler excavator, the EW240E MH material handler, the DD105 OSC oscillating compactor, and P6820D paver. With gains from connectivity one of Jernberg’s stated goals, the Volvo Co-Pilot suite assumed great importance at Volvo Days this year. The system delivers real-time machine data to an in-cab screen, helping operators

boost productivity, efficiency and safety. Following the European launch of the Volvo Co-Pilot Haul Assist function at Intermat, the system is now available for all of Volvo’s main product types – articulated haulers, excavators, wheel loaders, compactors and pavers. Solving machine issues instantly is such an important contributor to customers’ success that Volvo has placed uptime using digitalisation tools at the heart of its latest EMEA strategy, with two specific projects to ensure mechanics have access to the right information and support when they need it. The first, First Time Fix, aims at identifying the root cause of an issue quick and early. Aram Mahmoud, director of product support for Volvo CE Sales Region EMEA, explains: “With First Time Fix, we want dealers to be able to understand issues immediately and be prepared with the right parts and tools to make just one visit to the customer. Case solved.” Volvo is also working on a ‘one communication platform’ to integrate collaboration between dealers and product support teams, enabling mechanics’ feedback to go upstream all the way back to Volvo R&D. Slotte concludes: “We are constantly developing our facilities and capabilities to remain the industry leader.”

PROJECT REPORT AUGUS T 2018

Pouring Performance

One Of the Middle east’s largest cOncrete pOur jObs kicked Off a MajOr upcOMing develOpMent in dubai earlier this year. CMME brings yOu the details

L

asting an estimated 132 hours and delivering 26,000m3 of concrete over a 7,600sqm raft foundation footprint, one of the biggest concrete pours ever in the Middle East marked the beginning of construction earlier this year at a soon-tobe iconic project in Dubai. The project is One Za’abeel, a milestone development by Ithra Dubai, a wholly owned subsidiary of Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD). The concrete was supplied by Dubaibased CEMEX Top Mix from its batching plants several kilometres away at Al Quoz and Jebel Ali, and was taken to the site in a total of 98 transit mixers. Overseeing the pour was main contractor ALEC Engineering and Contracting. Located in the heart of Dubai, the developers intend for One Za’abeel to form a gateway between the old and new business districts of the city at the World Trade Centre roundabout. The project comprises two adjacent 57- and 67-storey towers and will be constructed upon a retail podium. The towers will be connected by a cantilevered floor – The Linx – 100m above the ground. This concourse will be open to the public and will offer a range of amenities, including restaurants and lounges. The three-storey podium at ground level – The Gallery – will house high-end retail outlets and leisure facilities. Overall, the mixed-use development will feature a high-end residential component (apartments in single or duplex formats), while also hosting commercial spaces

for offices and multinationals. Furthermore, the project will include two luxury hotels for corporate visitors and affluent tourists, the developer adds. “With the appointment of ALEC Engineering and Contracting as the main contractor, the project has entered an exciting phase of construction. After today’s pour, it is only a matter of time before One Za’abeel and its Linx – the panoramic sky concourse traversing the two towers – reshape the ever-exciting Dubai skyline,” says Issam Galadari, director and CEO of Ithra Dubai. “One Za’abeel will present a new kind of sustainable development for residents, tenants and visitors alike, offering an elevated lifestyle.” With site excavation, foundation works, shoring and piling works completed and construction of seven subterranean levels underway, the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2020, by which time it will encompass a total of 480,000sqm. “One Za’abeel is a fantastic development, that will test the skills of building. We are proud to be working alongside Ithra Dubai and the consultants to make this world-class project a success,” adds Kez Taylor, CEO of ALEC. As the main contractor, ALEC was tasked with overseeing the pour and the logistics behind it. Considering the volume to be poured, ALEC’s project team decided to use three batching plants in the Al Quoz Industrial Area, along with two batching plants in the Jebel Ali Industrial Area. “The travel time from Al Quoz batch plants to the project is around 40 minutes,

25 Brought in by 98 transit mixers, it took 132 hours to finish pouring the concrete for the foundation of the Zabeel One project, comprising two towers of 57 and 67 storeys.

while from the Jebel Ali plants to site, it is around 50 minutes,” the team adds, in a pour plan provided to CMME. “Due to the space constraints, the maximum number of pumps that could be used was restricted to eight. Each mobile pump was connected to individual pipelines (100m approximately), and out of eight pumps, three mobile pumps were connected to 13m radius mechanical distributors.” Dubai cement manufacturer CEMEX Top Mix was the supplier on the project, providing concrete grades of C75/20 OPC + GGBS + MS752M7X4-4-U92D. It also deployed 98 truck mixers to site for the pour, the team adds: “The raft foundation, which has 16,101m3 of concrete, was placed in one continuous pour. The concrete was supplied from CEMEX Top Mix’s batch plants located in Al Quoz and Jebel Ali. The batching plants are DCLcertified, and are monitored for continued compliance with the checklist for ready-mix concrete production facilities.” Risk management Given the scale of the operation, ALEC adds that there were emergency risk management plans in place in case of plant failure or any other delays in operations, explaining that all the CEMEX plants function independently of each other, with each plant backed up by standby generators. In the event of any unforeseen breakdowns, there were mechanical and electrical staff on standby throughout the raft pour to ensure that immediate action was taken. Furthermore, CEMEX had put in place contingency plans to divert production to other plants if necessary. “The first concrete pour for the project was the biggest one and hence it was the real challenge,” says a spokesperson from ALEC in response to questions from CMME. “We prepared the pour plan with all sorts of minute details – including the names of people working on each team. We started every day with meetings up to foreman level one week before the pour, to make sure everyone was aware about the activities they had to do. One day before the pour, we explained to each team up to the labour level what person would have to do,” he adds, outlining the planning that went into the project. “Meetings with the concrete supplier started one month before. We gathered all vehicle details to get permissions from the RTA to continue the concrete supply during the traffic ban hours. A couple of days before the pour, our team visited the concrete plants to make sure that significant quantities of ingredients were in storage, including the capacity of their ice plant.” According to the pour plan, before the trucks

left the batching plant, checkpoint technicians were required to sample each mix at not less than one set of six cubes for every 250m3 of each type of mix being produced, or as specified according to the concrete volume. At the project site, ALEC had two centralised checkpoints where the fresh concrete could be sampled and tested before the truck mixers reached the concrete pumps. The team planned for 70% of the trucks to be tested at the first checkpoint, with the rest tested at the second, to ensure a smooth traffic flow. The delivery temperature of the concrete was set at 26 degrees Celsius, while the maximum slump allowed was 220 +/- 25mm. Eight thermometers and eight slump tests were. When the measured values were within allowable limits, site technicians cast the cubes with a frequency specified by the consultant. The cubes were cured on-site and then sent to an approved third-party laboratory for durability and strength testing. The addition of water at the slump rack was strictly prohibited, with the slump adjusted by adding an admixture, as per the specification. Once sampling and testing were completed, the QA/QC inspector commented on the results in the delivery certification/pouring log and the trucks could then move forward to the pumping location. There, the pump supervisor met the trucks and checked the delivery certificate comments. Only approved trucks were allowed to proceed further to the mobile pump for pouring. “The concrete mix is designed to have high flow to get it through the congested reinforcement, which is managed through the addition of admixtures,” says the ALEC

The pumping team co-ordinated to work on different sections of the pour until they reached the top layers, after which the openings in the top reinforcements were closed back.

spokesperson. “In order to retain the workability for a couple of extra hours, retarders were added as well. These additives enhanced the performance of the concrete, without affecting the concrete properties.” ALEC says the pouring was done layer by layer, with each layer measured at 40cm x 150cm strips, while pockets of 250mm x 250mm at 5m intervals were made through

top reinforcement, to allow flexible hoses to reach the mid-raft level. Four temporary manholes of 600mm x 600mm were also made at the top reinforcement in different locations, to give the pouring team access to the inside of the raft. Working in co-ordination, the pumping teams worked on different sections of the pour until they reached the top layers, following which the openings in the top reinforcement were closed back up. The ALEC team adds that concreting did not take place in ambient shade temperatures exceeding 43 degrees Celsius. Above that temperature, formwork and reinforcement was kept shaded before and during the concreting. Temperature measurements were made via thermocouples positioned at locations agreed and approved by the site engineers. A laboratory technician was present throughout the concrete pour to ensure that no damage occurred to any of the installed thermocouple wires, ALEC adds. The smooth finishing of the surface was done by power float machines immediately after the concrete achieved its initial setting time, as per the specification and architectural layout drawings. Once this was completed, the surface was cured with water and hessian cloth. The concrete surface was covered by polythene sheets and polystyrene insulation boards to prevent heat loss, which would result in an increased temperature gradient.

Case extends g-series wheel loader range Why get it? HigHer bucket payload, operator convenience, designed for recycling applications Case Construction Equipment has introduced two new wheel loaders developed for waste and compost recycling applications. The 821G Waste Handler and the 921G Waste Handler both premiered at INTERMAT earlier this year and share the high levels of operator comfort, visibility and operator protection that are the hallmark of the G-Series, according to Case. They are powered by EU Stage IV/Tier 4 Final diesel engines, developed in-house by Case. The engines deliver 230hp and 255hp respectively, and feature exclusive solutions matching the requirements of companies operating in the waste and recycling sector. Case claims that the cab of the two Waste Handler models delivers best-in-class visibility with the revolutionary one-piece curved screen. Operator comfort is enhanced with the seat-mounted controls, premium seat and user-friendly controls layout, as well as the low noise and vibrations of the cab, mounted

on four viscostatic suspensions. The effective pressurisation ensures that all air entering the cab is cleaned and purified through a two-stage filter system with active carbon. The layout with rear-mounted engine, unique to Case wheel loaders, results in a better weight distribution that enables a higher bucket payload. This approach also has the advantage of providing access to the main service points at ground level, ensuring greater safety for maintenance operations. The engine in the new models feature Case’s unique Hi-eSCR technology, which does not require a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). This means the full power of the engine is available to the operator with the Hi-eSCR solution. In addition, this technology kills the sparks in the exhaust so that operation in waste or recycling facilities handling flammable materials is safer. The Proshift five-speed transmission and torque converter lock-up enables the operator to take full advantage of the high torque, delivering fuel savings and faster cycles. The two models feature the Case Heavy Duty Cooling Cube. This exclusive system features a cube layout for the radiators, which

results in maximum cooling performance and reduced clean-out requirements. In addition, when operating with sticky materials, wide-core radiators can be used to avoid clogging. This cooling system is designed to work around the clock, delivering top performance in the extreme conditions of waste and recycling facilities. “Waste management customers want the best in terms of total cost of ownership, uptime, safety and driver appreciation,” said Alain de Nanteuil, product manager, Case. “They will have all of this with the new G-Series Waste Handler models, thanks to the heavy-duty and efficient design of the powertrain, the waste guarding pack, the new G-Series cab – and, of course, our professional dealer network.” SPECIFICATIONS

VolVo uPdates l90h wheel loader Why get it? increase in fuel efficiency, tipping load and dump HeigHt Volvo CE has launched an updated version of its L90H wheel loader that offers up to 20% greater fuel efficiency, added versatility and lower operating costs. Volvo unveiled the latest innovation in its mid-sized front-end loaders at the World Of Asphalt 2018 with the latest version of the L90H. The H-Series 2.0 machine offers improved fuel efficiency, productivity, serviceability and ease of use over its predecessor and competitive products, said the Swedish giant. “The L90H wheel loader features updates to its transmission and torque converter that shorten cycle times and provide up to 20% greater fuel efficiency. It also has a higher tipping load and dump height,” said Chris Connolly, product manager, Wheel Loaders at Volvo CE. Among the new features are a delayed engine shutdown that reduces engine wear by avoiding hot turbo shutdowns. The L90H also has electro-servo hydraulic controls with adjustable sensitivity, allowing operators to shift quickly between linear and single-lever controls. A torque converter lockup with selectable modes saves fuel by lowering rpm and increasing speed, while a new loader arm design makes for increased payloads. For easier access to dirt and debris, there is also a sliding cooler. Meanwhile, the rimpull control reduces wheel spin and slippage, thereby also saving fuel and reducing tyre wear. The loader’s tipping load has been increased by 3.4% over the previous generation and the dump height is three inches higher.

Irish material handling solutions provider Combilift has launched its first purposebuilt order picker, the Combi-OP, which it says is the first purpose-built order picker in the world for long products. According to Combilift, previously customers have had to modify traditional order pickers to cope with the specific demands of long loads. The Combi-OP now guarantees much more efficient and non-compromised operation for easy picking of long profiles in, for example, steel service centres. This man-up truck features a long platform to enable the operator to access long products stored at height. It is fitted with guide rollers to enable it to operate in existing guided narrow aisles of just 1.4m – the same width as those needed for Combilift’s GT truck. It enables operators to easily and safely hand pick orders for customers from the roomy elevated platform, and has a capacity of 450kg. Its overhead guard, light anti-slip floor, self-closing platform gate and guard rails are all features that improve safety, as do the travel speed and steering angle, which automatically adjust according to lift heights. Other features include dual speed

control, AC electric steering and AC motor technology. An operator display reads out all the vital information of the machine to the operator and guide rollers help in precision picking. Safety and ease of use are also helped by a standing operator overhead guard and a multi-function steering with function controls. The Combi-OP was launched during the official opening of the new Combilift global headquarters near Dublin. Built at a cost of €50 million, the new 46,500sqm global headquarters and manufacturing facility will allow Combilift to double production, said the company. Established by managing director Martin McVicar and technical director Robert Moffett in 1998, privately-held Combilift developed the world’s first multidirectional all-wheel drive IC engine powered forklift in 1998. In its first year of operation, Combilift produced 18 units, 17 of which were exported. The company has more than doubled in size in the last five years and now has 40,000 units in operation in over 85 countries. Combilift is celebrating its 20th anniversary of lifting innovation and currently exports 98% of its products through its 250-strong international dealer network. SPECIFICATIONS

Mobility, versatility and caPacity are the calling cards of the all-terrain crane, the Middle east’s Most favoured heavy lifter class, Manufacturers and service Providers tell CMME

I

n the world of heavy lifting, the Middle East is all-terrain crane (ATC) territory. Cranes are a huge requirement in the region’s oil & gas, maritime and logistics sectors, its downstream petroleum industry and, especially, an everexpanding construction sector. And machines that can quickly and easily reach the various job-sites – from remote desert locations to congested urban areas – and are equally effective in all of these are the preferred equipment solutions when it comes to lifting jobs. The ATC space in the region is hotly contested by global majors such as Manitowoc’s Grove, Terex’s Demag and Liebherr, as well as other manufacturers from the Far East. And then there are the big rental companies who actually deploy the equipment, such as Al Faris and Integrated Logistics. All in all, it’s a sector that seldom fails to see action, whether it’s sales or projects. “The ATC is the most versatile self-driven machine that provides an economical lifting solution across various industry sectors, with short mobilisation times and quick assembly. It can be used across manufacturing for lifting steel structures and components, in maintenance for replacing and repair works, civil construction for lifting concrete slabs and structures, in logistics and shipping for lifting cargo, and in all other industries where lifting is required,” says Kieve Pinto, director, Al Faris Equipment Rentals, one of the largest crane rental companies in the region. This versatility has made the ATC the lifting market’s favourite in the region, confirms Waleed Raouf, regional sales manager (Crawler & Mobile) at Manitowoc Cranes – Middle East, owner of the illustrious Grove brand. “The four-axle, 100t category is one that has fared very well for us in the Middle East. The main driver for this is that rental companies can deploy these models on job-sites and enjoy higher

38

All-terrAin crAnes AUGUS T 2018

economies of scale and return due to the size, versus say a five-axle, 100-110t crane. Also, our 300t six-axle has been an astounding success. The reason for this is the better-thancompetition capacities at very high radii, all made possible by the 80m boom. This crane has revolutionised some of the traditional oil & gas jobs where typically one would need reinforced boom systems and swing away/ luffing jibs. We are seeing a rise in demand for ATCs lately as the oil prices continue their resurgence. The total size of the ME market in 2017 was 173 units. As of April 2018, the market size was 77 units. Based on this, we expect the market to increase by 10-15% in 2018.” Boom length – or reach – is probably more sought-after than capacity, Raouf explains, based on the fact that refineries are expanding horizontally, meaning superior reach is becoming more and more critical. He says Grove’s most numerous sales have come in the 60t capacity all the way up to 300t, and in the wider Middle East, Grove ATCs feature prominently in the fleets of crane rental companies such as Turkey’s Sarilar, Saudi Arabia’s Al Areedh and Al Tamimi Rentals, Oman’s Sinan Heavy Lift, the UAE’s Johnson Arabia and Bobb Cranes, as well as Integrated Logistics in KSA, Kuwait and Qatar, and the region-wide operations of Al-Jaber. “Grove ATCs can be found working in projects such as the Fourth Refinery & Clean Fuel projects in Kuwait, Aramco’s projects in KSA and the Zohr gas field in Egypt, apart from infrastructure projects like airports, stadiums, bridges and roads across the region,” he says. Twelve models are currently available in the Grove range, he adds, from a threeaxle, 60t model to a seven-axle, 450t one. All are designed to focus on strength, strong capacities in taxi and maxi configuration, comfort and manoeuvrability, as well as quality, reliability and profitability. They are manufactured in Manitowoc’s Wilhelmshave facility in Germany, which complies with ISO9001 quality standards. “This is all part of The Manitowoc Way, a culture driven by innovation and velocity that is evident across all aspects of the company. As part of this, the company is constantly looking for ways to speed up its product development process. Customer involvement is also a major part of the process, through Manitowoc’s Voice of the Customer input,” Raouf says. “The GMK6400 is Grove’s most important model in the high-capacity range. With its compact dimensions and strong load charts, it is the strongest six-axle crane in the market. With the boom extended 60m, a capacity of 64t is possible, as is 8.8t at a height of 133m with the 79m luffing jib – all with Grove’s MegaWingLift boom tensioning system

installed. With these capacities, our customers can do jobs usually covered by seven- or even eight-axle cranes.” This year, Grove also launched a follow-up to its popular six-axle GMK6300L, which, along with the GMK6400, kick-started a new era of Grove ATCs, setting unprecedented industry standards in reach, capacity and mobility. “The new 300t model is the GMK6300L-1. Its predecessor raced to sales of 100 units in just two years and more than 400 have been delivered to date. With its significantly improved load charts and specifications, we expect the GMK6300L-1 to prove just as popular. We also launched the GMK4100L-1 as successor to the GMK4100L, with more than

It has a 60m main boom, new Mercedes carrier cabin, latest Mercedes single engine technology with fuel saver modes, Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS) with boom configurator, and very compact dimensions of 2.55m width with 14-inch tyres,” says Raouf. the difference, says Deepak Jain, senior sales manager, Middle East. “In this region, people are looking for taxi configuration in the highcapacity range. As the rental rates became competitive, rental companies needed to innovate and improve their crane utilisation rate – do more jobs with one crane. This increased the demand for taxi configurations, and Demag has always been very strong in innovation and listening to customers.” The legendary Demag brand was revived by Terex a couple of years back at Bauma 2016. Jain explains: “We did it because our customers asked us to bring the Demag brand back; it’s as simple as that. Demag is a legendary brand, and through extensive conversations with our customers, we understood how much it still means to them and what their expectations are from it. It continues to be one of the most recognised brands in the industry. We

didn’t only bring the name Demag back, we continued to innovate with more models, to improve the quality and the service.” Those new models now mean Demag has 13 ATC models in its range, with capacities from 55t to 1200t. The most popular Demag cranes in the Middle East are in the 100t, 130t, 160t, 220t and 300t classes, he adds, with the AC 100-4L, AC 130-5, AC 160-5, AC 220-5 and AC 300 -6 proving especially popular in the region. The new compact AC45 City crane is also finding favour in the urban lift jobs arena. “The market response has been strong and positive to Demag’s reintroduction, Most customers owned Demag with pride, and they renewed their faith in our range and drove up volume all over the Middle East. All models have been very well received because there is trust in the brand and its residual value as well as in the maintenance support. Our cranes

have been involved in almost every major lift being carried out in the region, whether in the petrochemical industry, infrastructure and utilities sectors or in construction,” Jain says. A Terex innovation featured in most Demag cranes is the standard IC-1 control system, a touchscreen smart control system providing operators with additional information on capacity in relation to boom position. “For any given load, the IC-1 does precalculation of maximum capacity for a +/- 30° slewing angle and luffing area, depending on boom length, and enables the crane to use its maximum lifting capacity for every position of the boom,” explains Jain. Due to this real-time calculation, the lifting capacity for a defined radius is no longer limited to the minimum value of a pre-calculated 360-degree lifting capacity. Capacities are calculated in real time in the cab and the cranes can perform jobs where higher capacity units are typically needed. “The IC-1 Plus also enables higher lifting capacity while using less counterweight, which reduces transport costs. And due to lifting with asymmetric outrigger set-up, the crane can work in confined spaces without losing lifting capacity, increasing versatility and enabling customers to do more.” Another manufacturer favoured in the Middle East ATC sector is Liebherr. The German company enjoys a close association with Al Faris, whose fleet is 60% ATCs. “We have large fleets in the UAE and KSA. ATCs are especially important for the different industries that require quick mobilisation and lift capacity of 200-300t, and even more in tandem heavy lifts, which we have executed with meticulous planning using our ATCs. For civil structures and precast panels in residential projects, the 25-50t class are most in demand,” “Liebherr cranes comprise 90% of Al Faris’ fleet, with the 1,200t Liebherr 1200-9.1 ATC as the flagship. We bought 25 cranes from Liebherr earlier this year, mainly comprising ATCs in various capacities, and a few 160t units from Demag,” says Pinto, adding that for service and maintenance, Al Faris has a 24x7 facility with a large spare parts inventory in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Trained technicians are available to go on-site to minimise downtime, with Liebherr’s regional office for major works. Grove works through a network of distributors, one each in its most active regional markets. “We also have an office in Dubai with high-level service engineers helping our distributors overcome any challenges they might face,” says Raouf. Terex’s Jain adds: “We have a service location each in Saudi and the UAE, where we have very experienced and trained engineers supporting the cranes and customers tirelessly.”

SKID-STEER LOADERS AUGUS T 2018

O

ver the years, the Middle East construction sector has seen many highs and lows, which have both had profound impacts on the region’s equipment market. But while many trends have come and gone, what has stayed on despite the ebbs and flows in the sector is the Middle East’s penchant for skid-steer loaders. Skid-steer loaders (SSL) represent 15-18% of the overall construction equipment market in the Middle East, with an annual volume potential of 3,000 machines, says Rajbir Sandhu, regional general manager, Middle East at JCB. “The main users of SSLs are construction contractors and municipalities, while its use in the landscaping industry in the region is growing steadily as well.” The little runabouts with seemingly toy car-sized wheels and small buckets or other accessories coupled at the end of the loader arms is perhaps the most ubiquitous

of all construction machinery in the region, though neither the most visible nor the most glamorous. While those honours belong to the skids-steer’s larger cousins, the excavators, dozers, wheel loaders and even cranes, the SSL soldiers on, discharging its vital role in the construction landscape. It’s a role that Gaby Rhayem, regional director Middle East and Africa for Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, owner of the Bobcat brand, knows very well. After all, he presides over the regional operations of the biggest name in the skid-steer business. Indeed, so popular are the company’s SSLs and such a stranglehold has it historically enjoyed in the market that Bobcat has become the generic name for a skid-steer in the Middle East. Its SSL offering was bolstered with the release of new models and the new version of Bobcat’s immensely popular S130 – the S450. Rhayem says Bobcat’s new models have been well received by the market, with high sales volumes. “It was a tough act to follow to replace the ever popular S130, but our new S450 has pushed the bar even higher. Our dealers are more than ever very committed to the skid-steer loader business,

41 Bobcat continues to rule the roost in the skid-steer and compact track loader market, with around 50% market share. Its range has both small and large models, with many attachments.

“Skid-steers and their tracked versions – the compact track loaders – are ‘tool carriers’. We have a plethora of attachments for this small machine that allows it to perform multiple jobs – such as digging, trenching, grading, paving and many others”

and the machines sold and delivered to their customers have provided high performance and satisfaction for end users.” According to Rhayem, given the wide range of functions that an SSL can perform, it is indeed the Swiss Army knife of a construction site. “In fact, skid-steers and their tracked version – the compact track loaders (CTL) – are ‘tool carriers’. We have a plethora of attachments for this small machine that allows it to perform multiple jobs – such as digging, trenching, grading, paving and many others.” He cites the example of Bobcat’s T770, a large CTL that was recently used in a beachcleaning project in Abu Dhabi, where, equipped with the appropriate cleaner attachment it was put to work to clean and maintain a popular beach in the UAE capital. Customers are mainly working in construction, building and rental, says Rhayem, with skid-steer loaders used for building houses, villas, flats and offices. The landscaping and industrial sectors are also heavy users. “Landscaping is considered as the main growth sector after construction in the GCC. Rental follows closely after landscaping. The industrial segment is also a growing sector where skid-steer loaders are used.” In fact, Bobcat has consistently maintained its market share at around 50% in the skidsteer segment, Rhayem says, quoting figures provided by the Association of European Manufacturers (AEM). Bobcat, of course, pioneered the concept of the skid-steer loader and has a track record of selling more than a million units worldwide so far. Meanwhile, at Caterpillar, the B3 series is the bestselling SSL in the region, as it suits most market segments and meets a varying range of customer expectations, says Mamoun Mutair, product manager – Building Construction & Paving at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar, Cat’s dealer in the region. “SSLs are used at almost every job-site, such as building and general construction, landscaping and road laying. They are considered the backbone of the building construction industry and form a high volume of building construction equipment,” says Mutair. “Our range varies from 635kg to 1.3t in capacity and covers almost all applications in the market. We have the joystick operation as standard across our overall range. Cat’s engine layout makes our SSLs unique when it comes to serviceability compared to other brands. In addition, air-conditioned cabins are available as options on all models. “Some other features that set Cat SSLs apart include the joystick operation of the hydraulic system and a long-life chain system with separate lube mechanism. Cat machines also have some of the highest levels of serviceability

We also have a wide range of work tools for our SSLs – such as brooms, augers, forks, trenchers, backhoe attachments, compactors, blades and more – making them versatile machines. “And the icing on the cake for Cat is the after-sales service provided by Al-Bahar, which includes high availability of spare parts and the option of different customer service agreements as per customer requirements.” There are very few contractors, large, medium or small, that don’t use Cat SSLs, Mutair points out. And all who do are very happy with the performance. “Ever since we started selling our SSLs in the region, the market performance of our machines has been very good, and we expect our range to maintain its position.” Speaking of market position brings us to JCB. Sandhu says: “The SSL has huge importance for JCB, as it is the second largest equipment segment we compete in. Our range has 16 models across two different platform sizes,

both radial and vertical lift path options, and a range of engine capacities from 36-68kW on either wheels or tracks. A unique feature that makes JCB’s skid-steers popular is our unique single-sided boom with side entry concept.” JCB’s market share is growing, he adds, as the company continues to improve its product offering by way of range, features and attachments . “The 135HD and 155HD are our most common SSLs in the region. This is because they are both radial lift machines, better suited for digging and ground engaging applications, which is big here. The HDs are also mechanically controlled, making them easier to maintain and suitable for harsh conditions.” Sandhu explains that all JCB’s large platform machines now feature a new ‘Hi-viz’ boom with better visibility for the right-hand tyres or tracks, allowing operators to see attachments better. “This boom profile change is based on feedback from customers. The first ‘Hi-viz’ machines are now arriving at global dealers, and we expect the change to be well received.”

Another new SSL innovation from JCB was the introduction last year of the Teleskid, the world’s only single boom telescopic skid-steer and compact tracked loader. “This is a unique product in the industry that can lift higher, reach further and dig deeper than any other SSL. Since its launch, the popularity of the JCB Teleskid has far exceeded our expectations.” Sandhu explains that with its single boom design, JCB has enhanced operator safety because the design comes with a side-entry concept. “Unlike in traditional SSLs, where the presence of twin loader arms requires entry from the front after climbing over the bucket, JCB’s SSLs have automotive-style side doors that swing outwards instead of upwards. This makes ingress and egress safe and hassle-free. “Customers also increasingly appreciate the versatility of our SSLs, along with the safety. And JCB continues to support its whole product range via an extensive dealer network throughout the Middle East with genuine spare parts from our own warehouse in Dubai.”

ACCESS MATTERS People who have spent a long time in the GCC region and have lived through the construction boom of much of the last decade are used to scaffoldings. Not long ago they were common sights at building and infrastructure construction sites of almost all kinds. Those of us who have seen the initial phases of the first public transport systems being constructed in the region’s cities - such as the Dubai Metro’s first line – can still perhaps recall the heavy use of scaffoldings, and the piles of narrow iron pipes used to build them lying heaped at every job-site. But that is increasingly becoming a rare sight these days. Whether spurred on by safety concerns, official regulations against their use or considerations of speed and economy, scaffoldings in the region have already made way to a huge extent for the manned elevated work platform (MEWP). In this supplement, CMME brings you the manufacturers and suppliers of MEWP and other powered access products that are increasingly playing a more important and prominent role at job-sites as access starts to matter.

SNORKEL P OWERED ACCESS REP ORT 2018

On an upswing

CMME catches up with snorkel’s ceo Matthew elvin to find out how the global access products Major is perforMing in the Middle east and how it plans to iMprove its prospects in the region through focusing on safety, service and products

Snorkel is not a particularly wellknown MEWP brand in the Middle East when compared to some others. What do you think is the reason for this and what are you doing to address it? Snorkel was founded in 1959 and has since become a leading global manufacturer of aerial work platforms, offering a range of access equipment with platform heights from 2m to 40m. The Snorkel product range includes electric and diesel scissor and boom lifts, as well as towable booms and material lifts. Snorkel also offers lifts for working at low heights to replace traditional ladders or scaffold towers. Designed to be simple, reliable and robust, Snorkel lifts are sold through a global distributor network, including across the Middle East, who offer fast, local access to product support and spare parts. Snorkel has a long-standing reputation globally for its heavy duty articulating and telescopic boom lifts, which are well-accepted in the

Middle East. As the Snorkel product line has expanded, the brand is growing in popularity in the Middle East region, as many leading rental companies and contractors embrace the full mix of Snorkel products, including our industry-leading electric scissor lifts. How have the past couple of years been for Snorkel in the Middle East markets? We have experienced an improving market in the Middle East, which has aligned with the initiatives by Snorkel’s new ownership that became effective in October 2013. Snorkel is fortunate to have a well-established and reputable distributor network in the Middle East, supporting a wide range of customers. Some of our loyal customers within the region include AJI, Gulf Access Rental, Johnsons Arabia, SafeLift, RK Access and Al-Laith. What is your best-selling product in the GCC and the wider Middle East and why do you think it is popular? The best-selling Snorkel lift in the GCC and wider Middle East is the Snorkel A38E electric articulating boom lift. Lightweight but durable and reliable, the Snorkel A38E offers, class-leading performance, with a working height up to 13.5m and up to 5.9m of outreach. The up-andover articulated/telescopic boom design provides the operator with a superb working envelope and features powered platform rotation and Snorkel Guard secondary guarding as standard. The Snorkel A38E is part of an electric articulating boom lift family that combines superb manoeuvrability with clean and quiet operation, delivering working heights of up to 16m from zero emission, battery-powered aerial access equipment. What characteristics of the Middle

East powered access market make it unique from other global markets? The environment in the region is always a big obstacle when consumers are deciding on which machines to use. The heat, humidity, and sand are all regionspecific obstacles for the Middle East. Due to these conditions, we strongly recommend users to keep up on routine maintenance checks for all machines. Efficient maintenance is an important factor for customers, helping to minimise downtime and maximise revenues. As such, the new Snorkel scissor lifts feature an ‘inside-out’ tray design which enables all hydraulic and electrical components to rotate outside of the machine chassis for easy access. Snorkel articulating and telescopic boom lifts are designed to handle the toughest conditions, and have a proven long-working life in the Middle East. Please give an overview of your model range available in the Middle East region. Snorkel is a full-line manufacturer of work at height solutions, and all models within the 58-strong range are available in the Middle East. Manufactured in the USA, UK or New Zealand, all Snorkel lifts come with a two-year parts and labour, and a five-year structural warranty as standard. The Snorkel range includes families of electric and rough-terrain scissor lifts, electric and diesel boom lifts, towable boom lifts, personnel lifts, mast lifts, telehandlers and material lifts, as well as one of the largest selections of low level access products in the industry. Which are the most important models in Snorkel’s product range for the Middle East? The most popular machines in the Middle East are the two electric articulated boom lifts – the Snorkel

A38E and A46JE. The lightweight Snorkel A38E offers a working height of up to 13.5m and up to 5.9m of outreach. The battery-electric Snorkel A46JE is a versatile boom lift capable of working to heights up to 16.1m with a working outreach of 7.35m and a jib length of 1.5m. What new products have you introduced in the Middle East recently and how have they been received? In 2015, Snorkel introduced a brandnew line of electric slab scissor lifts, designed from the ground-up. This range was expanded in 2016, to a total of six models. Drawing on the real-life rental experience of Snorkel owner Don Ahern, the electric scissor lift family was designed to deliver a low total cost of ownership and a long working life. Innovative features that benefit the rental company, include ‘inside out’ access to all components and a single wheel nut on each wheel for faster maintenance, on-board diagnostics for easier troubleshooting, and many common components across the range for reduced spare parts inventory and improved familiarity for service technicians. In early 2018, Snorkel unveiled two new telescopic mast lifts with highly efficient electric drive. The Snorkel TM12E has a working height of 5.65m and a lift capacity of 227kg, while the larger TM16E has a 6.8m working height and the same high lift capacity. Both lifts are fitted with a 0.45m roll-out deck extension and have a zero inside turning radius for maximum manoeuvrability. Both of the new lifts include platform load sensing to comply with various standards. These models are currently available in North America and will be available to order in the Middle East later this year. Are there any special modifications that Snorkel makes to its models available in the Middle East to

The S3219E scissor lift is among Snorkel’s 58-model range, while the ‘insideout’ component trays (bottom) in its design aid in quick maintenance.

05 suit the job-site conditions and demands in this region? On some models, Snorkel offers an optional extreme environment kit that provides additional protection to cylinders, boom and switches. However, as a global manufacturer, Snorkel designs all of its products to withstand global environments, including the Middle East.

Please discuss your dealer network in the Middle East and the thought and objectives behind developing the network. Snorkel is committed to its ‘think global, act local’ philosophy. As such, Snorkel was one of the first AWP manufacturers to build a global distributor network to support its customers in all regions. Currently, the Snorkel distributor network in the Middle East and surrounding regions ranges from Turkey to South Africa, east to India and Pakistan, and as far west as Algeria. Dubai-based Kanoo Machinery, one of the oldest and most respected companies in the Middle East, is our dealer that handles all end-user sales in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman. In Qatar, Q-Fab has been a Snorkel distributor for over 10 years, offering machine sales, parts, servicing and repairs. How does Snorkel approach the maintenance, after-sales service and parts availability of its access machines sold in this region? n the popular imagination, colours often play a vital role in defining the brand and even the genre of construction equipment. Ask a lay person, or even someone from the construction industry, to imagine an excavator and the default colour will usually be some shade of yellow, courtesy Caterpillar, Volvo, Liebherr, Komatsu, Case and their ilk. So used is the public to seeing the big earthmovers in yellow that they have formed a strong association between the machine and the most common colour some of its top manufacturers use as a trademark. Now ask them the same question about aerial work platforms (AWP) – and chances are that the default answer will be blue. Just as certain manufacturers define the earthmovers segment with their colours, so do some others in the AWP sector. Some such as Genie, the powered access arm of global equipment giant Terex. Positioning itself as a premium brand means Genie always manages to hold its own in the market, says Sharbel Kordahi, managing director of Terex Equipment Middle East and sales director for Genie Aerial Work Platforms in the Middle East, South of Africa and Russia. Elaborating on

just how Genie held its own over the past 18 months in a market that was relatively slow to start last year before gathering steam from the third quarter, Kordahi says: “Last year we had rental giant Rapid Access buying over 300 machines from us and we had another rental major Manlift buying around 200 units for their operations in Qatar and the UAE. Then we had one of our biggest deals in Saudi with Expertise Contracting Co for 37 big booms.” The order from Expertise, one of Saudi Arabia’s leading industrial service providers, comprised a mix of Genie S-65 and S-85 boom lifts offering maximum working heights of 2027.9m. The order also included the first two Genie Xtra Capacity (XC) SX-135 XC boom lifts in the country. Combining more up reach and outreach than any other machine in this category on the market, both Genie SX-135 XC units have been under such high demand that Expertise plans to invest in more Genie XC machines by the end of this year, Kordahi informs. With the delivery of the machines earlier this year, Expertise now counts an aerial access fleet of 85 Genie units. “We have always been extremely satisfied with Genie aerial work platforms, as well as the reliable service support provided by our local

Genie team and their authorised service providers in the region,” says Mohammed Ashraf, director of Industrial Supplies, Expertise. “But when it comes to investing in new machines, finding the right financing solution is paramount. In this respect, Genie introduced us to Terex Financial Services (TFS) in Saudi Arabia. They proved to be a strong partner, and the terms offered were just what we needed to expand our fleet and support our business.” Offering from 300 to 454kg lift capacity, the Genie SX-135 XC boom lift provides 32% more load capacity than industry standard to raise up to three people and more tools and materials. As a result, Genie says, the number of up and down trips to reload is reduced, saving time and increasing productivity. Adding an extra 3m plus 125 degrees of jib articulation to the unit’s 43m working height and 27.43m outreach, the telescopic Genie Jib Extend is also unique, ideal for precision access in hard-to-reach places. Additionally, all units came with the factory-installed Genie Lift Guard Contact Alarm, a secondary operator protective system. For Expertise, this standard feature meant that the machines already complied with its oil & gas customer’s safety regulations. There are some trends that Genie has spotted, Kordahi says. “Most of our customers are looking for packaged solutions, not just a machine. It’s very much now a solutions-based approach in the market, which is great for us because this is our approach with our Genie value proposition. “We go in with our equipment, which is already one of the bestknown brands out there with very strong return on investment. We also go in with a finance solution with the help of our Terex Financial Services team. And of course, we go in with a very comprehensive service solution over and above the fact that the service intervals on our machines have been continuously improved.” For its service solution to be effective, Genie needs to have a strong

partnership with its distributors and representatives. And it forges and strengthens those relationships with continuous outreach programmes for its partners. A case in point is this year’s Genie Distributor Summit held for the Middle East, South Africa and Russia (MESAR) region in Dubai. Attended by more than 45 authorised Genie distributor representatives from the MESAR region,, the two-day event provided an opportunity to discuss specific markets, to share insights and to align goals together to take MESAR customers to the next level. “Our network of authorised Genie distributors in MESAR is growing steadily. Whether they are longstanding or recent relationships, they all know their customers and markets well — and, their feedback is vital to the success of our organisation. The high attendance of our distributors is a clear indication of their strong commitment to the Genie brand,” says Kordahi.

After A successful first decAde in the region, AmericAn powered Access mAjor jlg is looking to continue its success with An emphAsis on new models, sAfety And service Agreements

a

s one of the biggest access equipment manufacturers in the world, JLG enjoys huge popularity in the Middle East market. And it has been doing so for the over a decade now. This year, the company is celebrating its tenth anniversary in the region, marking a decade in which it has cemented its position in the Middle East’s powered access market as a supplier to the top projects and rental companies. From its regional hub in Dubai’s Jebel Ali, JLG looks after sales, services and parts in the Middle East, Southern Africa, Caspian and now the Indian markets. Currently the office has 10 full-time employees led by Ian Hume who was appointed sales director for emerging markets in 2017. JLG offers a full line of access products in the region including telehandlers. The entire range is tailored to less regulated country (LRC) specifications. This means, for example, that all engines are compliant with the higher sulphur fuels used in the region. The equipment JLG sells in this region is compliant with either the ANSI Export standard, a conformity assessment system that empowers its members in the global economy and helps assure safety and health of consumers, or European CE regulations. “There are many reasons why we are among the top access equipment companies in the world and in this region,” Hume tells CMME. “Firstly, we have the best mix of diverse products in our extensive range of booms and access equipment, compact crawlers and telehandlers. So, we have larger product offering for rental companies, such as Johnson Arabia, Manlift and Rapid Access, which are generally our top customers.” Another reason for JLG’s popularity is the way its products retain their value. “It’s great to have a machine that works for the customers and one that they like. This gets us to the top of the market. But what happens when a customer wants

up, up And AwAy JLG’s UItra Boom series features some of the biggest telescopic booms in the powered access business. With four models in the range, each offering an incremental increase in height and reach over the other, starting from the 1200SJP to the 1850SJ, the range has become a firm favourite of the oil & gas sector and also in areas where working at greater heights is of importance. While the 1200SJP offers a platform height of 36.5m, the 1350SJP rises to 41.1m and the 1500SJ reaches up to 45.72m, it is the 1850SJ which is the king of booms, offering a working height of nearly 60m. “We have a range of Ultra Booms in our fleet of which the 1850SJ telescopic boom is the leading model. It’s the biggest in the world; there is no bigger machine. It will literally get you higher than any other model,” says Ian Hume. “It can rise to nearly 60m and the great thing about this product - and the other Ultra Booms - is that it shares a lot of technology with our other products, which means it has commonality of parts between the machine. So as a renter, you are confident about what to stock and keep available, and how to keep the machine going.” Speaking about the demand for the machine, he adds: “Customers like the 1850SJ because it improves productivity. Compared to putting up a massive scaffold or trying to do it in another way, it is just a more efficient solution. The 1850SJ is also capable of carrying a total load of 205kg in restricted mode and 226.8kg in unrestricted mode.

to dispose of the asset after a certain number of years? That’s where JLG is leading the market. Even after you’ve had a JLG product for, let’s say, 10-15 years, which is not uncommon in this region, you still get a good residual value,” Hume says. Products that have recently joined JLG’s popular range include the new, completely redesigned 600 series telescopic boom lifts. The 600S and 66SJ, and their crawler versions – the 6000SC and 660SJC - offer “classleading platform capacity, allowing operators to bring more tools and material to the work area”, according to Jan-Willem van Wier, senior product marketing manager, JLG EMEA. “The new 600S has an unrestricted capacity of 270kg, which represents a 20% increase over its predecessor, with a restricted capacity of 455kg. The unrestricted capacity of the 660SJ has increased 50% to 340kgs, while it’s 250kg restricted,” he said, adding that lift speeds on these new booms are faster with their ability to operate multiple functions at once improved. JLG is well-known in the region for safety and service. All its booms are equipped as standard with its SkyGuard operator safety feature. A sensor, when activated by approximately 23kg of force, stops all functions in use at the time. The control system automatically accesses the functions in use by the operator at the time of activation and – for a small period of time – is able to reverse that sequence, with the exception of certain functions. The company also focuses on supporting its customers throughout the life cycle of their equipment. It recently introduced JLG Care, a service package featuring agreements on regular inspections and repair, offering a hedge against rising parts and labour costs, as the cost is fixed. “We are traditionally famous for our tall booms in the region,” says Hume and adds that with the new products and services, including a new BIM compatible product library (see box), JLG is “set to continue our dominance in the region’s access sector”.

AWP PROJECT P OWERED ACCESS REP ORT 2018

Istanbul’s new airport is a huge infrastructure project, with Haulotte one of the global equipment majors supplying access machines for the build.

“Haulotte is adding another layer of success in the world’s biggest airport project in Istanbul by deploying a large number of our innovative products on the entire construction site… supplying more than 300 units of the full range of Haulotte aerial work platforms”

P

owered access major Haulotte is no stranger to big projects in the Middle East. Major oil & gas projects in Saudi Arabia, such as the Jizan Refinery, feature armies of Haulotte access platform and big booms. And the crowning achievement for the French brand in the region is to have been chosen to supply its machines for the maintenance of the Masjid Al Haram in Makkah, Islam’s holiest site. Now, after many success stories in the Middle East, Haulotte has yet another to tell – one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Turkey. “Haulotte is adding another layer of success in the world’s biggest airport project in Istanbul by deploying a large number of our innovative products on the entire construction site,” says Arthur Danelian, managing director, Middle East, at Haulotte. “Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA) is the biggest and the most strategic project in the history of Turkey and it is nearly 80% completed. AcarlarMakinehas

supported the mega project by supplying more than 300 units of the full range of Haulotte machines.” The new Istanbul airport will have the capacity to host 200 million annual travellers upon completion, making it the world’s largest transportation hub on the largest plot of land ever designated for an airport facility. It will be the third international airport to be built in Istanbul after Istanbul Atatürk Airport and Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. All commercial businesses that will be located at the third airport will have a green establishment certificate (LEED). In this respect, Istanbul New Airport will carry the title as the world’s first green airport. The airport, which is located far from the city centre, will be connected to the city by high-speed railway in late 2019. This is especially an area of the project where various Haulotte scissor lifts and diesel articulated booms have been deployed since the work began, Danelian says. “The full range of Haulotte products are playing a role in the mega project, starting from Haulotte electric scissor

16

AWP PROJECT P OWERED ACCESS REP ORT 2018

lifts with 8m working heights to the biggest diesel boom lift in our range with working heights of 43m, proving the necessity of the AWPs in such projects. The need for the Haulotte working platforms is increasing day by day paralleled with the increasing awareness of the risks of working at height, the complexity of the structural designs of the airport and the adoption of time saving solutions through safe equipment,” he explains. Haulotte diesel articulated and telescopic booms were the ideal choice for jobs that required reaching up to difficult working areas in high areas and to elevate people and materials to build the complex design of the structure. “Among the models being used is the articulated Haulotte HA41RTJ PRO, which has a maximum outreach of 19.80m and the best lifting speed in the market with less than 40 seconds. Another model, the newly launched HA26RTJ PRO, is also in use and has been designed to meet the expectations of operators in terms of performance with the best comfort and safety. Thanks to perfectly simultaneous movements, this articulating boom quickly extends to full height so that operators save considerable time in reaching the work area,” reveals Danelian. “The telescopic HT43RTJPRO, which is well known for its rough terrain capabilities, is also providing a level of performance that is aiding productivity at the project. “Safety is not something that is optional; it is mandatory. Keeping this in mind, all the big booms were equipped with a secondary guarding system - the HAULOTTE ACTIV’ Shield Bar 2.0 - which provides the highest level of safety for operators. In an entrapment situation, the operator is pushed towards the bar and the machine stops automatically. The large clearance space, or Safety Gap, protects the operator from the entrapment.” The HAULOTTE ACTIV’ Shield Bar 2.0 is a secondary guarding system that offers additional protection, shielding

users from any risk of crushing without compromising productivity. It also preserves the best working envelope. Haulotte’s system alerts the operator to potential entrapment situations and is unique in that it features our innovative Safety Gap system, which can protect the operator from full entrapment and potentially allow them to get out of danger. Following an alert, only reverse and lowering movements are permitted, allowing the possibly panicked operator to get out of trouble without making the situation worse. “And after being triggered, the system is easy to reset and reactivate from the basket, which means there is no downtime. This evolution guarantees better ergonomics, enhanced robustness and simplicity, perfectly integrated into the upper control box cover,” Danelian explains. Also working at the Istanbul airport project are Haulotte’s diesel scissors

Haulotte has supplied more than 300 access machines to the new Istanbul airport project, including electric scissor lifts and diesel boom lifts.

H15SX and H18SX. According to Danelian, these are perfectly up to the task with their ergonomic and spaciously designed platforms, which can be loaded up to 500kg thanks to double extension. The superior fourwheel drive with hydraulic differential lock greatly improves the traction on all types of terrain. “The Haulotte electric scissors have been used for the electrical installations, false ceilings, fire sprinkler installation and interior design of the airport,” Danelian says. The most popular Haulotte model in this project, however, is the Compact 14, Danelian reveals and adds: “It is perfectly suitable thanks to its optimal 350kg lifting capacity and ability to be driven at its full height of 14m. Another popular model is the new OPTIMUM 8 with AC drive, which can work outdoors in winds up to 45kmh while maintaining a load capacity of 230kg.”

Another model proving very useful on the project is the electric articulated boom HA15IP. With its 8.45m outreach it has the best turning radius for optimum translation manoeuvrability in the tightest of spaces, down to as low as 3.7m. and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Danelian adds that the vertical mast STAR 10 is also in wide use on this worksite. “Thanks to its zero tail-swing, the operator can entirely rotate the turret while driving or working at height, without any risks of accidental contact of the turret with external obstacles or risks of being stuck. Thus, the operator can work in total safety and confidence,” he says. With its wide range of AWP models and given its track record of working in some of the best-known projects in the Middle East, the new Istanbul airport project is another feather in Haulotte’s already well-decorated cap.

Dubai-baseD RapiD access is the Region’s fiRst anD only access equipment pRoviDeR to offeR an aDvanceD viRtual Reality simulatoR to test opeRatoR competency

a

s one of the biggest and bestknown rental companies in the Middle East for mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP), Rapid Access has a clear focus on safety and operator training. An International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) authorised training centre, it has now brought in one of the most advanced training tools in the industry to its facility in Dubai - a virtual reality (VR) simulator to test and develop operator competency. Joe Keely, marketing manager, Middle East at Rapid Access, explains that the simulator enables people to build up competency and confidence in operating booms and scissor lifts. The machine consists of several devices forming an integrated system. Controlled by a computer, it has the basket and controls of an AWP machine in which the operator stands, wearing a headset with visual

and audio channels through which he is immersed into VR scenarios programmed into the computer. Each scenario consists of virtual tasks for the operator to perform that will test his skill in operating the machine. “It’s like driving a car: with time you’re likely to get some bad habits. Our new VR simulator enables you to return to a better standard of work. Like a refresher course, it enforces better practice in a cheaper, controlled environment, and it reminds you of certain things that you may have forgotten. It allows large contractors to prove the competency levels of their operators,” Keely elaborates. The controls respond just like a normal machine and the basket generates motion depending on the way the operator is using the equipment in his VR world, giving him the impression of operating an actual machine. There are several levels of tasks, each progressively more complex, and he is marked on his performance at each level

according to the skill displayed. “It’s a fully immersive, virtual reality world, and it’s a simulator that rocks and moves depending on your operation of the machine. The benefit is that you’re able to train and understand how the equipment works in a completely risk-free scenario. So you can operate an AWP machine using this simulator knowing you’re not going to do any damage to machines, people or a job-site,” Keely explains. “It’s got standard industry controls, which operate in a manner identical to real-life machines. If you can build up knowledge on how to operate here, you would be able to transfer those skills onto a real machine. Or if you know how to operate a machine, those skills can be used here as well.” Rapid Access is the only distributor for the simulator in the Middle East, Keely says, adding that the machine, developed and manufactured by Canada’s Serious Labs, is the first of its kind in the Middle East. The

19 Rapid Access’ simulator allows operators to delve into virtual reality scenarios projected on their VR glasses and test their skills without real-life risk.

simulator is now part of the company’s rental fleet and is something that will be rented out for customer demonstrations. Rapid Access is also looking to diversify its offerings package to its customers, so those who hire MEWPs from the company can also hire the simulator as a package, or hire it as a standalone item, Keely explains. The VR simulator is ideal as a device to test operator competence for companies or projects that have large numbers of people operating AWP equipment, he points out, adding that while all MEWP operators in the Middle East are required to have an IPAF licence to certify that they have been trained, having a licence is by no means an indicator that the operator is good at his job. “It is mandatory for operators to have an IPAF licence, but that doesn’t necessarily show they are competent in the use of the machine. This simulator is a very quick and simple way of testing the competence of the operator.” So far, Rapid Access staff have been

accompanying the simulator for demos, but that won’t always be the case, Keely explains. “It is a very easy thing to become familiar with and set up – it takes only about 15 minutes for setting up – and it doesn’t need much space. So, it’s something we could go in and install, and then the customer company can operate it on their own. “Once set up and in place, it’s only a case of turning the laptop on and off. It’s a very simple piece of kit. It looks complicated and I’m sure it’s complicated to design and build, but the ease of use is a boon to companies who would like to test the skill levels of their operators and upskill them.” Speaking of upskilling of operator brings us to what Keely believes is the future of the access industry in the region. “Led by the large companies, the sector in the region will move towards greater emphasis on training and professional development. So we anticipate a lot more work for our training division going ahead,” he says.

Rapid Access gives its customers the option of hiring its operators along with its equipment, but typically customers prefer to rent only the equipment and use their own operators. It proves more economical for a contractor, Keely explains, to have his workers trained to operate the machines he rents than to hire an operator along with the machine. “So, we encourage people to do their training with us and we sell a lot of training courses. Not only are we an authorised training partner of the IPAF, but also the world’s largest provider of MEWP training. Training our customers’ operators also means that they use the machines in a far safer and reliable way,” he says. Keely feels people will consider access equipment earlier in the building process as time goes on and will increase focus on health and safety, leading to an increase in the demand for training and upskilling. “These factors will lead to a greater requirement and more demand for our VR simulator.”

On a fast climb

Famous For its construction equipment, JcB sprang a surprise last year By announcing its entry into the access sector. as it readies to Bring its access products to the region, CMME speaks with raJBir sandhu, regional general manager, middle east, aBout what the move means For the company and the market When did JCB start its powered access division and what was the reasoning behind entering into this new area of business? We started in June 2017. We are already well-known for our telehandlers, having pioneered the concept in 1977 and sold more than 200,000 units to date. Since powered access is also one of the uses the telehandler is put to, we already had some experience of the access sector. We had been asked by a number of existing telehandler customers why we weren’t in the wider powered access market, so we decided to enter where we thought there was a great opportunity. Please describe the preparations and the behind-the-scenes work that went into this new venture. What were the thoughts that went into the

development of JCB’s model range? The project is still on-going, as we are soon to launch our boom products. It began more than three years ago and involved considerable market research and product investigation. All existing departments within JCB were involved in the design and development of the products. We have aimed for a model range that will meet approximately 80% of any rental company’s requirements whilst at the same time providing a robust and easy to use machine for the end user market across the world. How has JCB’s existing popularity in the equipment market helped in the launch of the access division? It has helped immensely. The reputation JCB has for building robust, superbly-engineered machines, together with our ability to provide service back-up and fantastic parts supply from our dealer distribution network, has carried over to the access division. We have built on the position we have carved for ourselves in the industry to help us make a strong start in this new venture for the company. Please give an overview of JCB’s current powered access model line-up. At present we have nine electric scissor lift models, with platform heights ranging from 4.57m up to 13.7m. Seven of the nine models are rated for outdoor use and we also offer lithium battery versions on all nine models. Platform capacity ranges from 230kg up to 550kg depending on the model. We will soon be launching our articulated and telescopic boom models. The articulated boom range will have four models – one electric boom with platform height of 13.7m along with three diesel articulated booms starting with a platform height of 15.25m going up to 24.4m, all powered by Kohler engines. Later in 2019 we will launch our range of three compact rough-terrain diesel scissors starting at a platform height of 8m going up to12.2m.

How has the JCB access division’s market performance been so far, both globally and in the Middle East? We have made a very strong start in our phased approach globally. Our launch of the electric scissor lift models in the Middle East will take place later this year and we are very excited at the potential we have in the region. Which models in your line-up are available in the Middle East and what was the rationale behind bringing those models to this region? Initially we will bring our range of nine electric scissor lifts to the Middle East and will introduce the other products as and when they become available. We have designed our products to be global, therefore there are no major differences in model specification by region. Our electric scissors have been designed keeping in mind job-site conditions all across the globe, so they do not need any special modification for the Middle East. In fact, they have been rigorously tested to ensure they perform well in the harsh conditions experienced in the Middle East. How is JCB approaching the maintenance and after-sales service of its access machines in this region? Our GCC dealers are all established names in their respective countries, such as GB Equipment Solutions in the UAE, who are ready to support customers with technical services and also by providing excellent spare parts back up in line with all our other JCB products. We have the full backing of our extensive dealer network in the launch of our access products in the region. Our dealer personnel have already been fully trained to support the machines immediately from the launch. What innovations has JCB made in its access equipment? We have launched a lithium battery option on our electric scissor lift range which has been very successful, particularly in Western Europe. This option means longer

running time between charges, shorter charging time (50%), takes away the need for daily checks and allows for opportunistic charging unlike the normal lead acid battery option. Obviously, as we launch more products into the market, we will continue to look at more innovation. Which models in your line up do you think will be will be especially important for JCB in the Middle East? The S1930E is the most popular model in our range as it is most commonly rented out by the rental companies. It is the ‘bread and butter’ of the industry, so, by definition, it will be very important to the Middle East market also. Our S4550E is a model that not all manufacturers produce. It offers an additional 1.5m compared to other brands who tend to stop at around 12.2m. With warehouses becoming ever taller as land becomes more expensive, this machine allows access to higher ceilings and roof voids.

E

ver since JCB sprang the telehandler on the world of construction in 1977, this versatile machine has been wowing the sector and carving a distinct niche for itself. It’s a niche that overlaps the domains of the loaders, lifters and the access platforms. The telehandler is an immensely popular and vitally important machine given the multiple uses it can be put to. In fact, the market credentials of several legendary equipment manufacturers have been built, and rest, on the telehandler. JCB itself is a prime example of this. The UK-based brand is the global leader in the telehandler segment and among the pioneers of the class. JCB’s Loadall is a legend in the sector and the company celebrated the 40th year of the machine last year, building its 200,000th telehandler - ample proof of the Loadall’s popularity. There are now more than 30 models of the iconic machine, and the number of engine, transmission, boom and cab options results in over 1,000 configurations. Multi-purpose machines are always an asset, and telehandlers bring important versatility to job-sites, whether being used to move and load construction materials or waste

or engaged in the build by placing construction elements onto a building - or even used as manlifts. “Telehandlers are used widely in construction in the Middle East. The machines are used to pick up and place material at heights or on a particular floor using forks or a bucket. It is more efficient than doing it manually and more cost effective than a mobile crane. There’s ample house-building work in the region and thus it makes the telehandler popular,” says Rajbir Sandhu, district manager, JCB Sales, Middle East. Another common use that the telehandler lends itself to is as an access device or man platform. And another major name in the telehandler segment – Bobcat – has just the system. Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East, at Doosan Bobcat, tells CMME that there is a wide range of man platforms available for use on both Bobcat rigid frame and rotary telescopic handlers. “For the rigid frame telehandlers, customers can choose the best man platform solution for their needs: fixed, rotating and/or extendable. The widths available are 1m, 2.4m or 4m. Platform extension is hydraulically controlled, requiring no effort from the operator and can be adjusted to

25 “The features prove how versatile the telehandler is. Bobcat has used that versatility to offer our customers an alternative to access equipment, saving them money by extending the use of the telehandlers”

the exact width required,” he says. “In addition, Bobcat’s patented Boom Positioning System (BPS) helps operators position the platform closer to walls and structures to be worked upon from the platform. A remotecontrol system can be used to operate the system at a distance, as well as other attachments like winches or jibs for further versatility.” Rhayem adds that in the rangetopping Bobcat T41.140SLP 14m and T40.180SLP 18m rigid frame telehandlers, “man platform ready” is an optional plug-and-play factory package for easy connection and operation of an aerial work platform, in full compliance with safety standards. Electrical and hydraulic lines are protected inside the boom, requiring no cable roll-up. “These features prove how versatile the telehandler is. Bobcat has used that versatility to offer our customers an alternative to access equipment, saving them money by extending the use of the telehandlers,” he explains. Safety is a major concern for telehandler operation, as is always the case when using machinery to work at height or lift loads. A scenario is when a machine is not correctly aligned with an opening, which may only become evident once the boom is extended. Bobcat has a solution for this with its integral side-shift mechanism allowing lateral boom movement. On the P40.17 – a 4t, 17m capacity machine – this allows for side movement of plus or minus 435mm, making for precise positioning of loads or access platforms. Last year, the company launched what it said was a world first, not just for telehandlers but for other lifting sectors too: a traversal stability system (TSS). This incorporates measurement of side stability and calculates the inclines a machine can operate on without compromising stability. Rhayem explains: “Lateral stability is extremely important, particularly for equipment that is used in the field and operates in uneven terrain conditions. Lateral overturning of

26

TELEHANDLERS P OWERED ACCESS REP ORT 2018

machinery is one of the main causes of death in the sector.” With the TSS system, the operator is advised of the machine’s realtime stability by a graphic on an in-cab display, along with an alarm buzzer if the overturning threshold is approached, and then with further aggravating movement being blocked. Another feature of Bobcat’s telehandlers is a hydrostatic transmission, which is available in its new TL30.70 model, among others. “The hydrostatic transmission allows smooth and precise low-speed travel, with the ability to immediately go faster or work harder when required. Operators do not even have to take

JCB pioneered the concept of the telehandler with the Loadall in 1977 and has become perhaps the most dominant telehandler maker globally.

their hands off the joystick to change gear. This premium transmission is also equipped with an inching function that allows the operator to be even more precise in low speed applications without having to use the brakes, reducing fatigue and increasing safety,” explains Rhayem. Bobcat has designed all of its telehandlers with the same robust box-welded frame for enhanced rigidity. The shielded bottom plate protects vital components and a combination of specific features maximises reliability and reduces total cost of ownership, he adds. Elaborating on JCB machines in the Middle East, Sandhu says the most

popular models in the region are in the 17m-class, which is preferred by 98% of JCB’s telehandler customers. “In the 17m range, JCB’s most popular model is the 540-170. This machine can reach up to a height of 16.7m or up to the third or fourth floor of an average building. On the ground, it can carry a 4t weight and at full height it can lift 2.5t. “It is powered by a 100hp engine and comes with three steering types, which enables operators to work with the machine in job-sites where space is tight,” says Sandhu. Revealing that JCB’s telehandlers are typically bought by small rental companies, who then often rent out

27

the machines to contractors, he says: “JCB telehandlers are market leaders worldwide and enjoy the highest residual value. JCB has its own engine, axles and drive lines, which makes it better from a design, performance and warranty perspective. “The booms are U-gauge, singlestructure pressed booms with welding only on bottom plates, which gives them structural strength. All boom stages have extra overlap for greater strength and to prevent bending. No added counterweight is used in a JCB telehandler; it is built in through the weight of the steel plates. Heavy-duty rams in the booms make JCB telehandlers work

horses that are liked by customers. “And coming to the all-important issue of serviceability, the design makes for easy access to critical components from ground level, enabling easy maintenance and servicing.” Speaking of service and maintenance brings us to the back-up support provided by the manufacturer and its partners – and this is another area where JCB excels, says Sandhu. “JCB has six different dealers in the each GCC country and all the dealerships are well-reputed groups. All dealers have invested on state-of-the-art workshop facilities, mobile workshops, technicians, parts warehouses and support systems. Service is one of the biggest strengths of the JCB network. Also, JCB has its own parts warehouse in Dubai’s Jebel Ali area from where we support the entire Middle East and parts of Africa. So spare parts are always availability of is not a concern at all.” Improving its model range further, JCB has launched a 20m telehandler in the region, Sandhu adds. “This new model obviously provides more reach and the 20m size is only available with JCB so far. Other recent JCB launches are in the 7m and 8m class.” Bobcat also places the utmost importance on service and support. “We have a philosophy that the quality of the machine we build makes us sell the first piece, but the quality of our service sells all subsequent units,” says Rhayem. “In every machine we sell, including of course the telehandlers, our customers are assured of the highest level of service from the constantly-trained and upskilled service technicians form our dealers and partners spread out extensively throughout the region who have long track records of excellence in their fields. And they are backed up by parts availability from our central parts hub in Dubai. Given the proven buildquality of Bobcat and our support network, we’ve virtually eliminated downtime for our customers.”
