A rAre honour
Sub EDITOR AELRED DOYLE
Avid readers of CMME may remember that I shared news in last month’s editorial about an invitation for your favourite magazine to attend the Bauma Media Dialog in Munich towards the end of January. As the only media body in the entire Middle East to get the invitation from organisers Messe Munchen, it was indeed a rare honour and a feather in CMME’s cap to join a group of elite media outlets in the business in getting a curtain raiser on Bauma 2019 from the organisers. The top manufacturers and service providers in the world were also on hand to provide previews of their plans for the fair. And the icing on the cake was the opportunity to participate in the selection process to determine the winners of the Bauma Innovation Award for this edition of the premier exhibition in our sector. After viewing presentations from the 15 nominees in a total of five categories and quizzing subject matter experts from the nominated companies, I duly cast my vote for my picks of the innovations presented, but not before being surprised by some of the stunning technologies and processes that the nominations contained. I’m blaming the bitter cold and snow outside the glass walls of the Internationales Congress Center in the Bavarian capital, which my Middle Eastern existence is unused to, for an ensuing brain freeze, as it took a while to process all the information. But asking questions and deliberating with media colleagues from around the world allowed me to arrive at a semblance of clarity on what were the most important of these seminal pieces of innovation and the impact they would have on the sector going ahead. It will be interesting to see whether CMME’s opinion matches the majority

view of industry peers when the winners are declared in April before Bauma 2019 opens. Our lips are sealed on who we voted for, but in this issue we present five of the nominated innovations that we think have potential for a long-term influence on the global construction industry. Speaking of innovation leads to the new Komatsu 20t excavator on our cover this month. The model, which replaces the existing machine this year, is a very useful tweak of the most important scooper class in the region. Komatsu has done well to improve almost all parameters of performance and productivity while still somehow lowering fuel consumption. Elsewhere in this issue we ask what makes German machines popular – the answer is a penchant for quality, if you haven’t guessed already – and take a look at what’s happening in the telehandler and bulldozer segments. Quality is also what we resolve to concentrate on even more fiercely at CMME after drawing inspiration from the innovations seen at Munich. Normally, being asked to be part of an event of this stature can be seen as a sign of arrival, but we are taking it as a signifier of the journey ahead of shedding an ever more penetrating light on the constantly changing world of construction machinery.

JCB Power Products is making its debut at the Middle East Electricity (MEE) exhibition in Dubai this month, in a move that the company says is based on a 30% increase in sales over the last three years. A statement from JCB said demand for power generators has been growing steadily throughout the Middle East, and the company has been working closely with large contractors and rental outfits such as Rental Solutions and Services in the UAE, which has already taken more than 700 JCB generators to build its rental business. At MEE, which runs March 5-7 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, JCB will demonstrate its “broad portfolio of products”, with generators from 8-2,750kVA alongside a range of lighting towers at Stand S2.C19. The company said its generators can be supplied with a variety of engines, including the JCB Dieselmax, to suit individual customer
requirements, with “market-leading levels of support from JCB’s 13 worldclass power dealers in the territory” as well as support from the JCB Middle East office and parts distribution facility in Dubai and JCB’s UK headquarters. Adam Holland, MD, JCB Power Products, said: “The Middle East Electricity exhibition is a brilliant platform for JCB to meet many potential new customers from across the Middle East, as well as neighbouring regions. We have some exciting new products to showcase to the region and we will be launching these on the stand in March.” Adam Snelson, General Sales manager, JCB Power Products, said: “Our flagship QS generator range has had fantastic success around the world, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. We’ve seen sets powered by the JCB fourcylinder and six-cylinder ranges double in sales over the last two years.”

JCB to sponsor new British F1 team
Construction equipment heavyweight JCB has announced a partnership with a new British motor racing team, as part of its drive to continue expanding its presence in global markets. The British manufacturer said the partnership with SportPesa Racing Point Formula One team (formerly Force
India) will see prominent JCB branding on the two cars driven by Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez, starting from this year’s first F1 race in Melbourne. Branding will also appear on helmets, overalls and the team’s trackside clothing. In addition, JCB will play a major part in Racing Point’s development by providing
machines to help in the construction of the team’s planned new factory later this year. JCB will also provide a range of power tools and workwear for the British team, as well as equipment including access platforms and generators to assist the team when it races in Europe. JCB began its F1 association
in 2017 with a sponsorship deal with another British team, Williams Racing, which has now concluded. The new deal offers JCB the opportunity to develop customer relationships at race meetings and to promote its brand in new and existing markets to increase global sales, the company said. “The popularity of Formula 1 gives JCB an excellent platform to promote our products on the international stage to both new and existing customers. JCB is one of the world’s biggest construction equipment brands, and this partnership will help us cement and build customer relationships. We see great synergy with the Racing Point team; we both have a passion for pushing the boundaries of new technology and an ambition to succeed,” said JCB chairman Lord Bamford.

Manlift depot tour for IPAF summit visitors
Powered access rental company Manlift will demonstrate its lean depot to customers and visitors as a follow-up to this year’s International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) Summit, which will take place in Dubai on March 6 – the first time the event is being held in the Middle East. The IPAF Summit is being held concurrently with the International Awards for Powered Access (IAPAs),
in which Manlift has been shortlisted for the Access Rental Company of the Year award. Manlift said that the day after the summit and awards, it will organise an exclusive behindthe-scenes tour of its depot in Dubai. The tour will be available only to those booking to attend the summit and the IAPAs. “We are looking forward to demonstrating and showcasing our lean depot to our customers and visitors who are interested to learn more about the Manlift Way and how we continuously deliver the best customer experience. To reach this far is truly an achievement and is a result of the dedication, hard work and commitment of the Manlift team in the region,” said Manlift.

First IPAF summit in Middle East this month Dubai welcomes the global powered access industry this month, as the sector’s biggest association – the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) – holds its annual IPAF Summit in the city on 6 March, the first time the event has been staged in the Middle East. Taking place at the Radisson Blue Deira Hotel Dubai, the event will be on the same day as the International Awards for Powered Access (IAPAs). The theme of this year’s IPAF Summit, which brings together representatives from across the powered access sector to discuss and debate the latest developments in the industry, is ‘Get Ready for Digitisation’, said the
IPAF in a statement. Announcing the details of the event, the IPAF said there will be an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Manlift rental depot in Dubai the following day, available to those booking to attend both the summit and IAPAs. The IPAF has also confirmed the list of
speakers at the summit, along with the nominees for the IAPA awards. The speakers for this year’s event are Matt Fearon, president, Genie; Peter Schrader, MD, Zeppelin Rental; Erhan Acar, GM, Rent Rise; Mohsen Ahmad, CEO, Logistics District, Dubai South; Jim Colvin, CEO, Serious Labs; Giles Councell, IPAF
director of Operations; Andrew Delahunt, IPAF Technical and Safety director; Benjamin Legg, VP, Aecom; Murray Pollok, managing editor of Access International; and Richard Whiting, IPAF GM for the UK market. A special break-out session on MCWPs, which was added to the summit programme in its last edition in Miami, has once again been scheduled and will be led by IPAF’s Angel Ibanez and Romina Vanzi, with additional presenters. Meanwhile, more than 100 entries have been received for the IAPAs 2019, and an independent judging panel of access industry experts with long-standing international experience met in Amsterdam in
January to determine the shortlist for the awards in 13 categories. These range from new products and innovations to safety and training, including the new Digital Development Award, designed to recognise a significant innovation in the use of digital technology. On the shortlist are well-known names in the Middle East powered access sector, such as Manlift, which has been nominated for the Access Rental Company of the Year, and Access Rental Gulf and Rapid Access, both in the Powered Access Pioneer category. Manufacturers well-known in the Middle East – such as Haulotte, JLG, Sinoboom and Skyjack – have also been nominated in various categories.

Wolff craNes shape MuNich’s future cityscape
N
ever have so many people lived in Munich, and the Bavarian capital continues to grow – by 2030 it will be home to 1.8 million residents. Numerous tower cranes from German specialist Wolffkran are currently in operation across the city on trend-setting residential developments, to accommodate the increasing population. Among the projects that Wolff cranes are helping to build are residential units in the city’s Kulturquadrat area and in the Au district near a historic ice factory, as well as hotels and hostels in the Werksviertel Mitte area. In the first project, four Wolff cranes are helping to build the new urban centre of Neuperlach in the southeast of Munich. They are in operation on the residential complex Loge No. 1, part of the mixed-use Kulturquadrat project. The contractor Bau in Form GmbH is using the top-slewing Wolff cranes to build a modern condominium in a district with lots of stores, cafés, green spaces and a culture centre. Thanks to their compact design and maximum lifting capacities of 8.5t and 12t, as well as their jib radius of 50m, the free-standing clear cranes – Wolff 6031.8 and Wolff 6031.12 – are perfect for lifting formwork and prefab concrete elements in an urban setting. Hoist speeds of 115-170m/min ensure a rapid building process and timely project completion. In order to guarantee sufficient stability of the freestanding cranes,
they have been set up on cross frames with ballast weights of up to 70t. Two different size cross frames are used: the Wolff KR 10-46 with an external dimension of 5.1m, and the Wolff KR 10-46/60 with an external dimension of 6.5m, achieved by adding extensions to the Wolff KR 10-46. Three further Wolff cranes are currently operating in the second project right next to the Paulaner Brewery’s listed location, where Carl von Linde’s ice machine produced ice to cool the storage cellars from 1881 to the 1960s. Painted in the corporate yellow of contractor Hans Holzner Baugesellschaft GmbH, they sit on the edge of a very cramped construction site right next to the residential complex. The Wolff 7532 is fitted with a 12t winch and has a tip load capacity of 4t at a 70m jib radius. The two clear Wolff 6015.8 and Wolff 6031 cranes have jib lengths of 47.5m and 62.5m respectively. In the third project, the Werksviertel Mitte, the creative quarter in the city’s east, is one of Munich’s most exciting construction sites, where modern architecture meets industrial buildings of the past. Here, a Wolff 6023 clear and a Wolff 7532 cross are building WERK4 on behalf of HOCHTIEF, integrating the former potato silo of the Pfanni factory into a new 86m-high hotel and hostel complex. T
hrough sister company Oasis Trading and Equipment Co LLC, Al-Bahar has opened its newest branch in the Omani industrial city of Sohar, north of the capital Muscat. The new branch is an expansion of the Oasis network in Oman, which now encompasses four locations in the sultanate – Muscat, Salalah, Nizwa and Sohar. According to Oasis, the inauguration of the new branch was a grand affair with several dignitaries and officials attending. Held under the patronage and in the presence of Salim Al Maqbali, deputy manager, Royal Court/Sohar Development Office, and Khalid Al Alwai, assets manager, Sohar Port & Free Zone, the ceremony took place late last year, with ribboncutting followed by a dinner reception. Commenting on the new branch opening, Bashar
Al Barghouthi, GM, Oasis Trading and Equipment, notes: “Oman being a very crucial market for us, we at Oasis Trading are very pleased to have expanded our network here. We intend to reaffirm our commitment to assuring customer value. The management vision was to build the new branch to meet growing business in the Sohar area. Currently we have several construction and crusher customers who have shown continuous growth in their businesses, along with new factories and industrial application customers based at the Sohar port, which is being expanded. They will all benefit from this branch. “We also intend to support our customers in mining who needed on-site support. Primarily, the target segments for this branch are the crushers, port services, road and heavy construction sectors, as well as factories, industrial and material handling.” He adds that the branch will offer the entire Caterpillar portfolio as well as other brands Oasis represents, such as SEM, Konecranes and UniCarriers. The new 10,000sqm branch next to Sohar University has a comprehensive offering, including dedicated service centres and an exclusive parts inventory. “For service, we have a new workshop with 16 bays to accommodate customers’ repair requirements, supported by an adequately large team of technicians to support maintenance and repair operations. We are keeping fast-moving assets in stock at the branch, plus frequently needed spare parts, covering
the existing fleet for Sohar customers as well as spare parts for newly-sold equipment. There is a bigger spare parts warehouse, which has three floors and is stocked according to current and future demand. Another feature of the new branch is its training rooms and facilities, which will enable us to host training seminars going forward,” adds Al Barghouthi. Also at the inauguration ceremony were representatives from 85 of Oasis’s major customers in the region, as well as many Oasis personnel. The event gave attendees a platform to check out the wide range of Cat machines, generators and parts on display. For a glimpse of Oasis’ service capabilities, the guests were given a walk-through of the workshop and parts warehouse at the new facility. An exclusive promotional offer accompanied the opening, with many customers capitalising on the opportunity to discuss their business challenges with company representatives and find solutions. Oasis expects to see high demand in Sohar for wheel loaders, excavators, dump trucks and material handling models. Qais Alkurdi, Sohar branch supervisor, Oasis, said: “We see the opening of this new branch in Sohar as an excellent opportunity to extend our local presence, contributing continuously to the various industries we serve.”

Komatsu says the key figures for its new 20t excavator are a 25% increase in productivity, a 12% rise in engine power and 15% higher travelling power, all despite a 20% improvement in fuel economy.
“The most important new figure to watch out for is the 20% lower fuel consumption. Despite an increase in both capacity and weight due to a bigger bucket and a strengthened boom, we have reduced the fuel consumption of the new machines
23
Komatsu’s new 20-tonners Japanese maJor brings in excavator duo designed for increased productivity, power, bucket capacity and durability at a lower fuel consumption
I
t’s common knowledge in the Middle East construction equipment industry that the job-sites and conditions in the region are different from those in any other place in the world – and perhaps unique. While some manufacturers in the compact and mini segments acknowledge this fact with special Middle East-only models, the makers of the larger stuff have usually only offered stripped-down versions of their global models to the Middle East, perhaps with a more powerful cooling system. Not Komatsu. The Japanese behemoth – the second largest construction equipment maker in the world overall, and a market leader in almost all the segments it operates in – has responded to the call of the Middle East market and to the unique requirements that its job-sites impose on machines. Fresh for 2019, Komatsu has introduced the PC210-10M0 and the PC210LC-10M0 in the region, which now spearhead the company’s assault on the vital 20t excavator sector in the Middle East. The most important point about these models is that they are designed and made specifically for areas with severe conditions, like the hot, sandy and dusty ones in the Middle East.
Explaining the specificity of the new model in an exclusive conversation with CMME, Ashraf Hashish, senior GM, Marketing, at Komatsu Middle East, says: “That the PC210-10M0 and PC210LC-10M0 are built for the region is apparent in their names. The M0 in the moniker signifies that the models have been designed for countries with severe conditions like in the Middle East. The 10 stands for the generation and the LC in the second variant stands for long crawler or longer undercarriage. The LC machine is best suited for operations where low ground pressure is required, such as working on soft surfaces like sand and for hammering applications as well. “Our new 20t excavator features a new design. The existing 20t model was due for an upgrade and when we went in for that upgrade we improved a whole bunch of things in terms of machine weight, productivity and fuel consumption. This new machine has many innovative features.” Normally, when you upgrade a model and increase machine weight, it is accompanied by higher fuel consumption. But Komatsu has broken the mould for that with this new 20-tonner, going for higher weight but significantly lowering fuel consumption, Hashish explains. “The most important new figure to watch out for is the 20% lower fuel consumption.
24
COVER STORY M ARCH 2019
Despite an increase in both capacity and weight due to a bigger bucket and a strengthened boom, we have reduced the fuel consumption of the new machines. This is being managed by both engine technology and other innovative features. “For example, the fan in the new machine is a what we call an on-demand fan. In the previous model, the fan was always rotating at speed, no matter what the temperature of the machine or its cooling need. The new machine’s cooling fan will operate as per need, saving energy. We also have improved high-capacity hydraulics in the new 10M0 models. The new hydraulic drive provides increased flow rates and reduced resistance. “So the two big improvements are better and more efficient cooling with the on-demand fan and stronger hydraulics. The speed-controlled viscous fan clutch contributes to reduced fuel consumption, as you are using it only when needed and not all the time. The conventional fan is working all the time, so it takes part of the engine power continuously, but in this case it will not work unless needed and the speed will also depend on the ambient temperature.” The factors that Komatsu took into greatest consideration when developing the new 20t excavator for the Middle East were power, weight, life of the boom, bucket capacity and machine stability – and that ‘made in Japan’ quality. Hashish says that when it comes to build quality, there is no compromise at Komatsu. This is something customers have come to
take for granted from the brand. “This new range is made in Japan, like all of our shipments coming to this region. Even though all Komatsu machines, no matter where they are made, have the same quality standard that is strictly controlled and adhered to by Komatsu, still the ‘made in Japan’ label does go a longer way in the Middle East, and we respected the sentiments of our customers in the region by manufacturing the new 20t in Japan,” he explains.
A bigger bucket capacity and a strengthened boom are at the heart of the increase in productivity and enhanced durability of the new 20t scoopers.
Key figures Explaining the technical aspects of the new 20t excavators, Motoyasu Kakita, manager, Product Marketing, at Komatsu Middle East, says: “The key figures for the new 20t excavators are these: a 25% increase in productivity – one of the main contributors in that is the increase in bucket size from 0.8m3 to 1.0m3; a 12% rise in engine power; and a 15% expansion in travelling power. And probably the most important figure is that all of this has been made possible despite a 20% improvement in fuel economy. “Maintenance costs have also been reduced, and a big reason for this is that the interval for changing hydraulic oil filters has been upgraded from 1,000 hours to 2,500 hours, so this is a component that will now last more than twice as long.” Durability has also been enhanced by a strengthened boom and revolving frame, achieved through a multi-pronged approach, explains the Komatsu technical

loads of productivity Of the innovations in Komatsu’s new 20t excavator range, the company believes that the buckets are of prime importance. The machines use Komatsu’s patented ME buckets as standard; they reduce digging resistance and give the wear parts of the bucket a longer life while providing higher digging force and increased productivity, says Motoyasu Kakita. “It’s a special design that our engineers and design team came up with. The bucket has a
different shape compared to traditional excavator buckets. The bottom plate is curved and rounded, which enhances the bucket’s performance in many ways and adds to the productivity and durability, as well as contributing to lower fuel consumption. “The new bucket is one of the reasons we have less fuel consumption in the new range, because the digging resistance is lower and so less power is required,” he explains. The entire available bucket range for the new
20t excavator sports the ME bucket design and technology and comes in various capacities and for various conditions. Starting from the Light Duty (LD) bucket for low load and wear and non-abrasive soil conditions, the bucket range has General Purpose (GP), Heavy Duty (HD) and Extra Heavy Duty (XHD) options available, each built for progressively higher machine loads, increased metal wear and more abrasive soil, aggregate and rock surfaces. Bucket capacities range from 0.8-1.2m3.
In the new bucket design, a reshaped profile produces lower resistance both inside and outside the bucket, leading to increased production. The new shape smoothens the angle of the deepest part of the bucket with respect to the direction of excavation, leading to a decrease in penetration resistance. The bucket’s bottom plate stays inside the parabolic curve traced by the bucket teeth as it makes a pass into the ground for better ground penetration, making it easier to fill the bucket.
25
“Maintenance costs have also been reduced, and a big reason for this is that the interval for changing hydraulic oil filters has been upgraded from 1,000 hours to 2,500 hours, so this is a component that will now last more than twice as long” OpERaTOR ENViRONmENT
Quiet, safe and comfortable Komatsu has put a lot of thought and effort into making the new cab and the entire operator environment of its new 20t excavator range comfortable, plush, safe and user-friendly, to increase operator efficiency. The seat is fully suspended inside the cab so that it is isolated from the rest of the cab and minimal vibrations from the machine are transmitted to the operator. Weight adjustment functions on the seat suspension come as standard, and its plush ride can reduce fatigue even for
long operating hours. The armrests are also carefully ergonomically designed to reduce fatigue and enable the operator to reach all the controls effortlessly without tiring the arms. The fully air-conditioned cab is also pressurised internally to minimise dust entering from outside. Not only does this keep the cab clean, it also keeps the air inside purer for the operator. “The cabin is a ‘quiet cabin’ and blocks out a lot of the ambient noise of the job-site. With an in-cab decibel level of 68dB, it
offers the same noise level as a passenger car. This is probably one of the lowest noise levels in the entire industry right now and helps to reduce operator stress,” says Motoyasu Kakita. “The cab also incorporates full ROPS (Rollover Protection System) and OPG (Operator Protective Guard) Level 1 capability for total operator safety and security. We have done extensive testing of the ROPS and OPG features of the machines, and we made sure that the operator will be safe in critical situations.”
specialist. “Firstly, the boom width has increased 25% and we’ve improved our welding processes. And the revolving frame, as well as the left and right boom foot part, are reinforced to accommodate large bucket specifications and increased counter weight for stability improvement. As a result, we have fewer welds, increased strength and high rigidity.” Another key innovation that has enabled the new 20t excavators to achieve their sharp increase in productivity is the design of the bucket, which is exclusive to Komatsu. Kakita explains: “In this machine we use our ME bucket as standard, which is a Komatsu-patented design. Using this bucket, we reduce the digging resistance and maintain longer life for the wear parts of the bucket, while still providing higher digging force – and definitely higher productivity.” When it comes to telematics and machine control, the new PC210-10M0 and PC210LC-10M0 are equipped with a large, multi-lingual, high-resolution LCD monitor. The upgraded system on these machines sports an in-cab seven-inch LCD touchscreen designed for maximum userfriendliness, Kakita adds. “It supports around 15 languages, including Arabic, which is very useful for the Middle East. Most of the operations can be accessed by just one click. Selecting modes such as e-mode, p-mode, breakermode and attachment mode, adjusting the oil pressure and flow, the in-cab air conditioning – all of these can be done

large lcd monitor and komtrax Like all Komatsu machines, the new 20t excavators come with a large LCD monitor and Komtrax equipped as standard. “The operator has a seven-inch LCD touchscreen designed for maximum user-friendliness. It supports around 15 languages, including Arabic, and has one-touch activation of most functions. These include mode selection – e-mode, p-mode, breaker mode and attachment mode – adjusting the oil pressure and flow, the in-cab air conditioning,” explains Motoyasu Kakita. “An important point about the monitor is that it has a separate mode for the attachments. Mostly excavators use a single breaker mode for any attachment, but for Komatsu we use different modes for attachments and for breakers. So we have the standard bucket mode, then a breaker mode just for breakers and a third mode for other attachments.” The monitor is errorcoded and gives a message when it detects a fault in the machine. Another big plus of the system is that it does not need an external connection to diagnose faults. And it is also possible to monitor this information via Komtrax.
“Our technicians will have passwords to access the Komtrax system and they can find out the machine’s condition and ascertain where there is a problem. It’s got built-in diagnosis, unlike a lot of our competitors, where you need to hook up computers to the onboard system to diagnose the error codes and faults.” Komtrax, of course, is a machine monitoring system. For advanced machine control, such as assistance in digging, trenching depth and hitting the desired grade, the machines can be loaded with Topcon’s systems for Komatsu, which control operations such as bucket position, angle and load, to increase accuracy and productivity. “Komtrax controls the status of the machine in terms of location, fuel consumption, working hours, fault diagnosis, whether the filters or the oil need to be changed – all of these technical parameters. With Komtrax, we also give access through a user name and password to our customers who have a fleet of Komatsu machines, to monitor their assets remotely from their offices and laptops,” Kakita says.
The new PC21010M0 and PC210LC-10M0 both sport many new operatorfriendly features, like a seven-inch LCD monitor and suspended seat for ease of working.
via one-touch operations, which both improves operator efficiency and reduces fatigue, besides improving safety by letting the operator concentrate on the job.” Also helping the operator to better concentrate is the entire cabin environment, which features seating and controls designed with superior ergonomics in mind, with the suspended seat isolating the operator from machine vibrations. “The best part is the low noise level in the cab, which is as quiet as a passenger car; this helps to both increase operator efficiency and reduce fatigue, And of course, there is no compromise on safety, with full strengthening of the cab for total protection of the operator in case of a mishap,” says Kakita. Back-up in place Whenever a new model hits the market, the question on every user’s lips is whether there is adequate service and back-up available. It’s not uncommon for a great new product to fail because the manufacturer – either out of overconfidence in the quality or hastiness to bring the product to market – has dithered on putting in place the required support structure with regard to availability of new spare parts or technicians adequately trained to address the new technology in the machine.
Komatsu is thorough, assures Hashish, explaining that the company has not reached its global position of success without being meticulous about such details. “When we introduce a new model, we first make sure that all the parts are in stock and available at our distributors, and the technicians are already trained on the new machine. The good thing for this machine is that it already has a high percentage of commonality with our conventional PC200 in terms of parts and even service. There are of course some key changes when compared to the old machine, but still a lot of important elements have been retained. “So it’s not as if our customers and dealers will need to revamp their entire stocks for the new machine. Many of the main components and parts still remain the same. And we have already stocked up in the region on the parts that are different in the new machine and also put in place the technical capabilities of our own and our dealer personnel. “We are all ready for this new range across the Komatsu dealer network in the region. All our dealers already have in stock at least 2,000 of the most commonly required parts and also have all the required technicians trained and certified by us for the new models.” Describing the market strategy behind

the new machine, he says the target markets are mainly Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman – all places where the 20t is the most in-demand excavator class. “We are in talks to close some sales in Oman soon, and we also expect good numbers from the UAE – in fact, we’ve already sold five units in the country, which is the first sale of the new machine in the region. “The response so far has been very encouraging, with a lot of interest in our new 20t excavator among contractors, project owners, rental companies, fleet owners and the entire industry in the region,” Hashish says. The formal launch of the PC210-10M0 and PC210LC-10M0 will be in April in Dubai, he adds. “We are very optimistic about the prospect of this machine in the region, given that the 20t machine it is replacing is a very successful one already in the market. We’ve now come out with an even better machine, and we’re sure it will continue the same success trend as the previous one and enable Komatsu to consolidate its position as a market leader in excavators in the region.”

ust as in the automotive and higher technology fields, German manufacturers enjoy a reputation for quality and advanced technology in the construction equipment sphere. They have set benchmarks of performance, carving out a reputation for excellence both globally and in the Middle East. As a proponent of German machinery, UAE equipment powerhouse Genavco swears by the ‘made in Germany’ label. The company has a big repertoire of brands, such as Liebherr, the Wirtgen Group brands and Boge, and believes the country of origin makes a huge difference. “We can definitely say that the ‘made in Germany’ label is very important in the Middle East as it helps us in this market. German companies are respected here. When it comes to the price, ‘made in Germany’ has a premium, but customers don’t mind paying it. We have instances where customers preferred German-origin products over those coming from elsewhere even when the brand was a premium one in both cases,” says Asif Khan, GM, Plant & Equipment, Genavco. “For example, one of our German brands, Hamm, make their asphalt compactors in Germany. Many big competitors have production bases in Asia. But we are selling on our USP that Hamm is fully manufactured in Germany and customers have no problem with its premium nature. There are long-term benefits of buying made-in-Germany products, such as high reliability, low maintenance and higher resale value.” Every year Wirtgen hosts the Wirtgen Technology Days, where they invite customers for first exposure to their new machines and technologies. The group is now looking to bring this to the region. “Initially the event took place in Germany but is now also being held in China and India. And the Middle East is next on the radar. We welcome the idea and will bring in more customers. We are looking at either next year or 2021 for the inaugural Middle East edition.” Moving to Liebherr, he says that the brand’s earthmoving equipment has an edge in technology and features. For example, Liebherr’s hydrostatic drive in its big earthmovers makes for

Gold-standard services
Goldhofer increases middle east presence
Among the heavy moving projects that Goldhofer has supplied equipment to and assisted with in the GCC region are those completed by its Dubai-based customer Al Faris Equipment Rentals. Al Faris is one of the premier crane service providers in the region and a heavy user not just of Goldhofer transport modules but also cranes from another German brand – Liebherr. “Al Faris completed the loading and transport of a tower buoy in October 2018. This was one of the largest and heaviest buoys in the world, which was transported by road from inland Dubai to Jebel Ali Port,” says Erich Traub. “The 455t load with a diameter of 18.3m and a height of 16m was transported using four files of Goldhofer’s 16-axle self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) type PST. The loading and
unloading procedure were done by the self-jacking system of the trailer. The biggest challenge during the transport was manoeuvring the PST with the load in narrow stretches, bottlenecks and sharp curves, as well as considerable diversions and the management of temporary traffic routes.” Traub adds that due to the demand for Goldhofer products in the Middle East market, the company is expanding its presence here and its range of services. “Numerous visitors were able to convince themselves of this at the [last edition of the] Breakbulk Middle East show in Dubai. In addition, Goldhofer and ALS Logistic Solutions have been operating a representative office and a regional logistics centre for the Airport Technology division in Dubai since December last year.”

premises of quality Much of Wacker Neuson’s construction equipment for the Middle East comes from Reichertshofen in Upper Bavaria, where the company has also built a research and development centre. “By bundling the design, development and production in this location, we have a centre of expertise for construction equipment with a global responsibility,” says MD Helmut Bauer. The Reichertshofen site is more than 50 years old. The plant was opened in 1964 to meet increasing demand for innovative, high-quality construction equipment and produces mainly concrete compaction units along with some other types of kit. At the 102,000sqm premises, great care is taken in developing each piece of equipment and the location has also introduced energy and environmental management systems. It is also ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 certified. “All our products meet the highest quality standards. Quality assurance is a priority for Wacker Neuson because we want to exceed customers’ expectations,” explains Bauer. The development activities are focused on the expansion of the company’s pioneering role in product safety as
well as in operator and environmental protection. For example, the battery rammers won the EuroTest Award from the German employers’ liability insurance association for the construction industry (BG Bau), which is awarded to solutions meeting stringent quality standards in occupational and product safety. A highlight at the location is the training centre. Here, dealers, customers and employees from all over the world take part in training courses. The Wacker Neuson Academy building has several seminar rooms, service training workshops and a 2,200sqm demonstration hall where participants can use and test all products. In 2016, a new four-storey office building and the research and development centre for construction equipment were built on the area, which covers over 10 hectares. Nearly 3,500sqm of it was used to build working areas primarily oriented to research and development. The state-of-the-art test facility covers almost 3,000sqm and is used to extensively test equipment being developed, as well as to continuously test and improve currently produced models.
smoother and simpler operation. “Genavco has represented Leibherr earthmoving in the UAE for around three years now and has seen constant growth. This year we have a focus on the wheel loader and excavator markets here. We have already sold over 30 Liebherr units for quarries, infrastructure projects and building sites such as the Expo 2020. Though this is a price-conscious market, quality, technology and reliability give Liebherr an edge. There is growth on the back of the German reputation for quality and the future is looking good.” Echoing Khan is Erich Traub, from Marketing Communications at heavy transport specialist Goldhofer. “Globally, ‘made in Germany’ is recognised as a seal for high quality, which also ensures high resale value. Goldhofer products are an excellent example of these benefits. Regardless of climatic or geographical conditions, our customers worldwide rely on our products for all aspects of transport and airport technology. Our strengths are power, endurance, reliability and toughness. Goldhofer has been in the Middle East for more than 40 years and has built up longterm business relationships.” Along with a Middle East representative office, Goldhofer also has a service station here with technicians and spare parts for airport and transport technology, he adds. “Goldhofer’s full range is available in this region. The demand for special equipment here is in the deliveries of aircraft tractors and heavy-duty modules. The rest of our medium-sized semi-trailer equipment is also in increasing demand.” When it comes to legacy there are few companies more prestigious than Kaeser Kompressoren, celebrating its centenary this year. Kaeser’s product
range comprises stationary and portable rotary screw compressors, stationary and mobile reciprocating compressors, vacuum pumps, rotary blowers, filters, dryers, air tools and accessories. The company says its “stateof-the-art compressor control systems with advanced IT technology take compressed air efficiency to the next level and beyond”. “Kaeser owes its enviable reputation to the exceptional efficiency and quality of its products and reliable field service. Our years of strong growth and expansion are directly attributable to [our] passion for innovation and strict quality standards,” says Carl Briden, head of Kaeser’s operations in the Middle East, which he helped set up more than two decades ago. “We’ve grown with the Middle East and established our brand as a top one for compressors on the dint of our quality and service. Today we offer a vast range of products and have partnered with some of the leading names in the region – such as Al Naboodah – to distribute and service our products, all backed by our presence in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone and by our base in Germany.” Celebrations of Kaeser’s centenary this year will also include the Middle East operations, with year-round initiatives, he adds. Over at compact equipment specialist Wacker Neuson, ‘made in Germany’ is a symbol of quality, performance and innovation, feels Manhal Al-Chalabi, regional GM, Middle East & North Africa. “Our customers know that our brand stands for reliability and performance, attributes that have led to our products working on projects such as the Expo 2020, Dubai Metro Extension, Kuwait and Bahrain airports, and the Riyadh Metro. Customers have appreciated the quality, performance and durability of our equipment in all these projects.”

ADVERTORIAL: BEST OF THE DECADE M ARCH 2019
bauma 2019 A trAde fAir of superlAtives
33 With 614,000sqm of outdoor and indoor show space, bauma 2019 expects over 3,500 exhibitors and 600,000 visitors, breaking its own record for the world’s biggest trade event.
The first edition of what we know today as bauma was held in Munich in 1954. Back then, the fair was called Spring Show for Construction Machinery and its venue was a vast open space called Theresienwiese in southwestern Munich, where the city’s famed Oktoberfest takes place. The inaugural show attracted about 8,000 visitors. In 1969, Messe München took over bauma, leading to an increase in the event’s area. When the fair was first held in 1954, the gross area was 20,000sqm; in contrast, bauma 2019 has 614,000sqm available – almost 31 times more than when Messe München first held the event. Bauma has been held on the trade fair grounds in Riem, eastern Munich, since 1998. The number of exhibitors and visitors has also increased considerably, and each successive edition now breaks its own record for the largest trade event in the world. It is only fitting, then, that the last bauma of the decade will also be the largest, with over 3,500 exhibitors and 600,000 visitors expected this year. Klaus Dittrich, chairman and CEO of Messe München, says: “The industry is booming, which is also reflected in the growth of bauma. We’ve taken account of the rise in demand and expanded our site in eastern Munich to 614,000sqm. Our aim is to offer a platform to as many exhibitors as possible. With bauma 2019, we continue to surpass ourselves.”
Over the years, the show has been expanded to form the bauma NETWORK. In addition to the bauma trade fair, Messe München has five more international construction machinery fairs in China, India, South Africa, Russia and Brazil. Exhibition director Mareile Kaestner says: “If you consider our five international construction machinery fairs, we are active almost every year from an international aspect and stay in touch with the exhibitors.” Canada as partner country “For bauma 2019, we decided to select Canada as our partner country. Canada is one of the world’s most important markets for the international construction machinery, building material plant and mining machine industry. It is the world’s seventh biggest construction machinery market. I’m sure bauma 2019 will offer good insights into the Canadian market.” Messe München has not only strengthened its overseas business, but also enlarged the Munich site and modified the offering in tune with the needs of visitors and exhibitors. “Our trade fair grounds were recently completed. In addition to increasing the exhibition space, we have also optimised the structure of the content so that visitors can find their way around the fair better,” Kaestner says. Construction machinery will be extended to five halls. Additional areas in the north outdoor bauma 2019 Messe München Exhibitor service: +49 89 949-11348 Email: exhibiting@bauma.de Visitor service: +49 89 949-11348 Email: info@bauma.de www.bauma.de
area and to the north of Halls C4 and C5 are available for this. Lifting equipment is in a new area in Hall C4. The exhibition area for components has also increased to five halls. Formwork and scaffolding will now be in Hall B3 and also in the larger north outdoor area. Digital topics from the industry will be shown in Hall A2. The special show, ‘Think Big’, has also been moved to the Internationales Congress Center München (ICM) adjoining the trade fair facilities at Riem. As a result, the area for construction equipment and tools has expanded in Hall B0 - the location of the ‘digital construction site’ at bauma Virtual Experience. At bauma 2019, visitors will be able to experience the digital construction site with the help of virtual and augmented reality. For the first time, companies can even present themselves completely digitally. The Virtual Experience offers completely new opportunities in the areas of planning and development, advanced training and sales. Anyone wanting to train their apprentices under realistic conditions – in machine maintenance, for example – or looking to explain the inner workings of a crane to the customer no longer has to even leave the site. “With the help of our new products, we also want to pass the 600,000-visitor mark and extend our status as the world’s biggest trade fair,” Dittrich concludes.

New cat wheel loader for haNdliNG aGGreGate Why get it? boosts produCtion by handlinG Greater payloads in yard appliCations Caterpillar has introduced the 990K aggregate handler, designed to handle greater payloads in aggregates yard applications. With as much as a 25% payload increase, compared to the standard 990K, it enables customers to load trucks and railcars faster and to move more material in loadand-carry and stockpile management tasks, and complements the smaller 986K and 988K aggregate handlers in the Cat large wheel loader line. The Cat 990K aggregate handler has a payload of 22t and a full turn static tipping load of 43.7t. Additional counterweight maintains machine stability, and robust 990K structures ensure durability in the aggregate handler configuration, says Cat. The loader makes best use of general purpose and coal buckets for increased volume.
The 990K aggregate handler is available in standard lift configuration with a 4,108mm dump clearance and in high lift configuration with a 4,569mm dump clearance. Increased capacity and high dump clearance enable customers to load railcars and large trucks with a better pass match, for faster material handling at lower cost per ton. The new model is built on the proven 990K wheel loader, whose powertrain provides fuel-efficient yet powerful operation. The Cat C27 engine powers the loader and delivers net power of 699hp. Lower engine speed makes for greater fuel economy while additional fuel savings come with the ECO Mode (on-demand throttle), engine-idle shutdown and engineidle kickdown/auto-resume systems. Cat’s exclusive impeller clutch torque converter uses a lock-up clutch, providing direct drive to boost fuel economy, trim cycle times and reduce heat, especially in load-and-carry applications. The system allows operators to
balance rimpull and hydraulic power for optimum loading efficiency. Positive flow control hydraulics use a variable displacement, electronically-controlled pump to precisely apportion oil flow based on operator control inputs. The operator station features the Cat Vital Information Management System, VIMS 3G, which provides customisable operator profiles, a cycle timer and an integral Payload Control System for on-the-go payload weighing. The Cat Comfort III seat provides integrated seat-mounted controls for smooth and comfortable operation. SPECIFICATIONS

Telehandlers M ARCH 2019
“More than 90% of the components in a JCB telehandler is produced by us in-house. No other manufacturer comes close to this. We have our own engines, drivelines, axles and every critical component. This allows us full quality control”
JCB is a global pioneer of the telehandler, releasing its first Loadall model in 1977. Since then it has led the segment and continues to be the GCC’s favourite.

he telehandler may be a unique concept but on the face of it, it’s also quite a simple one. Essentially, it’s a marriage between a wheel loader and a boom truck. Take a wheel loader and lengthen its loading arm by replacing it with a telescopic arm to lift that load to greater heights, and voila! You’ve got a telehandler. The machine that result from this marriage is supremely versatile – it can load trucks, lift loads to heights, pick and carry across job-sites as a transport, act as a powered access device by raising men and materials high, and more. Despite its simplicity, though, it took a lot of ingenuity to come up with the concept, and among the first to do so was JCB in 1977 with its Loadall, which has become in iconic name in the market today. Elaborating on JCB’s machines in the Middle East, Rajbir Sandhu, regional general manager, JCB Middle East, says the most popular models in the region are in the 17m-class. “JCB’s most popular model in the 17m range is the 540-170. It can reach up to the third floor of a villa on average. On the ground, it can carry a weight of 4t and at full lift height it can lift 2.5t. The GCC market demands both high lift capacity and high reach. “JCB is the largest-selling telehandler brand in most markets, including the Middle East. We did have the early mover advantage, having pioneered the concept with our Loadall, but the real reason for our dominance is that we’ve kept on improving and refining our models. We also enjoy the highest residual values in the telehandler segment. “A big part of our refinement is the quality. More than 90% of the components in a JCB telehandler
is produced by us in-house. No other manufacturer comes close to this. We have our own engines, drivelines, axles and every critical component. This allows us full quality control and makes our design, performance and warranty much better,” Sandhu says. JCB’s booms are U-gauge, single-structure pressed booms with welding only on bottom plates, which gives them structural strength, he explains. All boom stages have extra overlap for greater strength and to prevent bending. Also JCB telehandlers are designed so that the machine weight itself acts as the counterweight through carefully calculated distribution for more stability. Among recent sales, JCB supplied telehandlers to Access Hire Middle East last year when the big rental company expanded its fleet to construction and earthmoving equipment , Sandhu says. Another typical use of telehandlers around the world is in agriculture. Though not a common application in this region, Sandhu says it’s expanding gradually. “We’ve sold some of our smaller 7m models to the agricultural sector here. Another machine not widely known here is an 8m model with a high load capacity. We’ve sold a few of these in Saudi Arabia.” Selling is predicated on after-sales service in the equipment sector, and JCB has that base firmly covered. “We have a dealer each in all six GCC countries and all are reputed groups who have invested in stateof-the-art facilities, mobile workshops, technicians, parts and support systems. Service is one of the biggest strengths of the JCB network. Also, we have our own parts warehouse in Dubai to support the entire region.” Over at Bobcat, there is an extensive range of telehandlers with more than 15 models covering various sizes, capacities and uses. A highlight among these for the Middle Eat market is the T40180.

UAE contractor, Fujairah National Construction Co. L.L.C (FNC), has been using the T40180 for various tasks and is happy with its performance. Farhan Mahmood Rizvi, engineered equipment and plant manager at FNC, says: “We’ve used the Bobcat T40180 for a wide variety of applications, from lifting rebar from trucks for foundation work to moving heavy materials such as the components for the steel work for buildings. “The dependable safe lifting offered by the T40180 when it is used both with the wheels alone or with its stabilisers deployed has been an important aspect for us. The easy-to-use stabilisers also ensure that the full capabilities of the telehandler can be utilised in the most confined working areas and close to walls.” The T40180 is Bobcat’s largest rigid frame telehandler. It has a maximum lift capacity of 4t and a maximum lift height of 17.52m. The lift capacity at maximum lift height is 2.5t, while at the maximum reach of 13.7m, it‘s 560kg. Bobcat’s unique, patented side shift system ensures there is no need to reposition the machine if it is not aligned with an opening, providing a flexibility of +/- 700mm side shift. Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Doosan Bobcat Middle East and Africa, says: “At Bobcat, for over 60 years, we have been constantly innovating the market - always developing new machines for customers’ needs. The T40180 is no exception to this legacy. “All Bobcat telehandlers are covered by a three-year/3000-hour standard warranty, with the option of extending it to five years/5000 hours. Our telehandlers are designed and produced in our Pontchâteau, France, plant,
where strict quality control is a matter of habit.” Case Construction Equipment is another key player in the telehandler space in the GCC. The two-pronged assault of the brand owned by the Italian powerhouse CNH Industrial, on the region’s telehandler market is through its TX140-45 and TX170-45 models, says Franco Invernizzi, senior director, Africa and Middle East, at CNH Industrial. “Customers in the region are looking for both high-reach booms and extra lifting capacity at all lift heights. The best balance of these two features is what works well in the Middle East markets, and we offer this in our range,” Invernizzi says.
Case looks for the best balance of high-reach booms and extra lifting capacity in its telehandlers, such as in the TX170-45, backed up by parts availability and service support.
The TX170-45 is Case’s flagship, he points out, offering customers an ideal combination of excellent lift height and lift capacity. “The maximum lift capacity of this model is a high 4.5t, while the maximum reach is 16.60m, which is exactly what the market demands at the top end,” he explains. And then there is the Case attachment range that increases the versatility of its telehandler even further. “We offer a wide variety of attachments, from radio-controlled manlifts to cement mixes and 4-in-1 buckets, making our telehandlers suitable for a huge variety of tasks on the job-site,” Invernizzi adds. When talking about the established

TargeTing heavy handling Bobcat’s new solution for heavy lift handling applications in general industry, manufacturing, building materials, warehousing, quarrying and mining in the Middle East is the TL43.80HF telehandler. With the new TL43.80HF, Bobcat now offers a range of 15 different rigid frame telehandler models, covering maximum lifting capacities between 2.6-4.3t and maximum lifting heights of 6-18m.
“Thanks to a high lift capacity of 4.3t and a maximum lift height of almost 8m, the TL43.80HF is a compact telehandler offering a package, which brings together robustness, rough terrain ability and ease of use for the operator in the same machine,” says Gaby Rhayem. The TL43.80HF has very high stability, he adds, due to its box welded frame, low load centre, a long wheel base and
its new massive rear counterweight, allowing Bobcat to minimise the overall dimensions of the machine, resulting in a width of only 2.3m and a length of less than 5m from the rear to the fork face. “With a very short turning radius of just 3.71m, this new Bobcat telehandler is a very manoeuvrable machine, a particularly useful feature when it comes to working in confined environments,” Rhayem emphasises.
43 telehandler makers on the market, one name that can never be left out is Caterpillar. The global machinery giant has a range of telehandlers available in the region with five models: TH314D, TH417D, TH357D, TH408D and the latest addition to the range, the TH3510D, says Mamoun Mutair, product manager, Building Construction and Paving, at Al-Bahar, the authorised Cat dealer for the GCC countries, excluding Saudi Arabia. As with other brands, Cat, too, counts its 4t-lift capacity machine with 18m lift height – the TH417D – as its flagship and its largest selling telehandler in the region, Mutair says. “Telehandlers have become a basic machine at every construction site and represent at least 15% of the total building construction machines. In view of this, we expanded our range in the region in the fourth quarter of 2018 with the TH417D,” he adds. Dsicussing some of the salient features of the Cat telehandler range, Mutair says that Cat’s machines are based on the company’s iconic durability and quality promise that is demanded by customers across the region. “With the TH314D and TH417D, Cat took its TH range to the next level, keeping customer’s applications in mind. These two models are designed and built considering the arduous conditions found in modern-day construction applications. With simplification in the
powertrain and hydraulics, the machines are built to maximise uptime. Other simplified features come in the operator environment where both the most proficient and novice operators can maximise productivity. Apart from the spacious cabins, easy access to the engine and main components make serviceability simple and fast.”
The TH3510D is the latest additon to Caterpillar’s telehandler range in the region, which boasts of five models in various lift-capacity and boom length specifications.
According to Mutair, another big plus of buying a Cat telehandler is that every single Cat customer enters the Cat family where they find themselves receiving world-class customer service and unrivalled support from Cat dealers like Al-Bahar. “There really is no other dealer network that comes close,” he concludes.

Technology, robusTness and innovaTions go hand-in-hand To give The already powerful bulldozer greaTer prominence in The markeT and on job-siTes
45 Cat’s new D8R bulldozer builds on the success of previous models by offering increased horsepower, a larger standard blade and a 20% more efficient cooling system.
T
here is a term for the first thing you do when a construction project starts – you break ground. Whether the ground you break is hard, rocky, gravely, sandy or soft can vary, but what will seldom vary is the machine you use: the bulldozer. Simply put, the bulldozer is a crawler tractor – sometimes a wheeled one – with a blade in front to push dirt. But that is where its simplicity ends; the modern dozer is so much more than a dirt pusher when you take a look at the latest kit from the major manufacturers on the market. A name synonymous with the dozer is that of Caterpillar, a brand that has contributed to bringing the dozer to its current level of development as one of the earliest manufacturers in the category. The history and tradition that Cat enjoys with the dozer has been repeatedly brought home by the many landmarks that the manufacturer has celebrated in its dozermaking journey, such as the 40-year celebration of its iconic D10 dozer recently. Back in 1977, when Cat first unleashed the massive D10, it took out 93 patents on the proprietary technologies it had devised for the machine. That tradition of technological excellence continues to this day in Cat’s dozer line-up, which has 11 models divided across small, medium and large categories, from the 8t D3K2 to the 104t D11. The most popular of Cat’s dozers, however, is the D8, especially in the Middle East, says Samer Ismail, product manager, Earthmoving & Excavation at Cat’s regional dealer Al-Bahar. “Cat is leading the market in the dozer segment for decades now, and the D8R is one of the most popular machines in our line-up. It is the legacy model within the industry for customers who demand dozers,” Ismail says. He explains that the model has become the standard term for a dozer in the entire Middle East, so much that “when talking about dozers, the first model that crosses customers’ minds is the D8”. “The D8 is the best-known model across the region. Not only from Cat, but when customers decide to buy a dozer, they have generally been known to request a ‘quote for a D8’ no matter what the brand is that they are looking for. With its durability, reliability and productivity for decades, the D8 has proven itself as the number one choice for many customers both regionally and worldwide.” The model features high horsepower and a large standard blade for high productivity, as
well as a range of optional GRADE technologies to help bulldozer operators get more work done in less time. It also has a highly efficient powertrain and cooling system, increasing ambient capability by up to 20%. “Since 1996, when the D8R was introduced, the model has demonstrated outstanding performance in the field. With continuous development and upgrades taking into consideration customer feedback, the D8R has been enhanced year by year to meet customer expectations and needs,” adds Ismail. Japanese biggie Komatsu is another name to reckon with in the dozer sector. In fact, it is the market leader in countries such as the UAE and Oman and challenging for the top in other regional markets, says Ashraf Hashish, senior GM, Marketing, Komatsu Middle East. “Komatsu has three main dozer models in this market. The largest is the D575, which is among the largest models in the world, not just in the Middle East. Our biggest selling model in the region is the D375, mainly in-demand in Saudi Arabia. We have a very comfortable position in the dozer market in the region. The machines are technologically advanced and very popular, and we enjoy some very good feedback from our customers. “In the UAE, our D155 has worked in projects such as Ras Al Khaimah’s new city, and currently we have Komatsu dozers working at the Mohammad bin Rashid Solar Park. We are also proud that Komatsu dozers have been involved in developing infrastructure for Dubai’s Expo 2020 and for the Al Maktoum airport expansion. In fact, the UAE is one of Komatsu’s biggest markets worldwide for the D155. “Komatsu’s 155 dozers now come with plugand-play capabilities for Topcon’s machine control systems. It only takes a few hours to install the Topcon system on our machine, because it comes ready for the product.” When it comes to the tracks, Komatsu has some tricks up its sleeve. It offers standard and extreme surface tracks, which are sealed and lubricated. The tracks are also designed so that when they wear out on one side, they can be flipped and used with the other side, giving them longer track life and durability. Komatsu’s standard undercarriage design is also well-known to provide the best stability in the dozer business along with a longer life and less maintenance. Another exponent of the dozer is Case Construction Equipment. The CNH Industrial company counts the 2050M as its biggest selling model in the region, according to Franco Invernizzi, senior director, Middle East and Africa, CNH Industrial. “The 2050M is our largest model and also the most popular because it has high
46

versatility with a number of blade options and implements on offer. Our “Ultra Life” track reduces maintenance costs considerably. The best and most common use for it are in road construction, landscaping, infrastructure work, contouring and levelling.” All Case dozers feature hydrostatic steering and transmission, Invernizzi adds, which enables Case to deliver class-leading drawbar pull by cutting out torque converters and dividers. The system also offers continuous power transfer through the power range and excellent movability. “We offer a wide range of dozer blades, implements and track options for all applications. Our blade options include power angle tilt, straight and semi-U, while the track options are long track, wide and low ground pressure ones.” Speaking about the support a Case dozer customer can expect, he adds: “With a parts depot in Dubai, Case tackles all the requirements of aftersales and parts of the Middle East region from here. With dedicated after sales and service team members based in Dubai, every customer need and query is managed with efficiency and speed.” German giant Liebherr is also a prominent presence on the dozer landscape, with its line-up of a wide sweep of models, from the small 15t PR 716 to the 70t behemoth PR 776. A comprehensive range of weight classes are covered by the Teutonic equipment giant, with models in the 40t, 30t and 24t classes. What was missing from the Liebherr dozer stable, however, was an updated presence in the popular 50t class, which was remedied
with the introduction of the new PR 766 a model that offers the best conditions for continuing Liebherr’s success story, now in the 50t category. The model has a 422hp, 8-cylinder engine with blade capacities of 13.6-17m3 and a travel speed of 11kph. “Liebherr dozers are very easy to operate, with cabin comfort that is perhaps classleading. Our hydrostatic drive makes it similar to using an automatic car, whereas the torque convertor drives of our competitors is like driving a manual car. And that’s a huge difference. It’s so easy to drive a Liebherr dozer
Case is one of the few brands to offer its full line of machines in the Middle East, including the 2050M - it’s most popular dozer with a best-in-class powertrain.
that even a 12-year-old child can operate it,” says Saif Khan, senior sales manager at Liebherr’s UAE distributor, Genavco. “In fact, our way of convincing customers is to do side-by-side live demonstrations with dozers from other brands. When customers see for themselves the capabilities and ease of use our machines provide in comparison to the competition, they are convinced about inducting Liebherr dozers into their fleets. Liebherr dozers also have a great track record in the market. Our machines have worked on the Expo 2020 site in Dubai and the contractor
LiEBhErr hyDrOstatic DrivE
innovaTion in Transmission Perhaps the most innovative feature in Liebherr dozers is the hydrostatic drive, which helps to keep engine revolutions low in practical use regardless of the load. “The advantage is that the drive gives maximum power at all times, no matter what the engine rpm, and also saves around 15% more fuel over normal torque converter machines,” says Saif Khan. “With a torque converter machine, you have to increase the rpm to get power, but the hydrostatic drive gives high power
at a lower rpm, so wear and tear is a lot less. For example, our dozers run at around 1600-1800rpm to generate peak power. To get the same power from a torque convertor machine, you’ll have to tun it at around 2200-2300rpm. This gives Liebherr an advantage in the engine life-cycle and since we’re getting maximum power at all times, it also gives us higher productivity.” All the driver needs to do is operate the throttle and keep the machine pointed in the right direction. Power
delivery is taken care of by the hydrostatic drive. And it does that without any of the jerkiness of transmissions found in other dozers. “This also means a smooth ride for the operator, resulting in less fatigue, another factor in the increased productivity of the machines. In a market where getting a skilled and expert dozer operator is difficult, our machine’s features, especially the hydrostatic drive, mean that even novice operators find them easy to use,” says Khan.
