GETTING THE SPEC RIGHT IS CRUCIAL IN SAUDI

After spending (a lof of) time in Saudi Arabia recently, it’s clear that trucking there is a whole different ballgame. The sheer scale of the country, the relentless heat, and the challenges drivers face every day make it obvious: standard, off-the-shelf trucks and trailers just don’t cut it. If you’re not tailoring your vehicles to the conditions, you’re setting yourself – and your drivers – up for unnecessary headaches. And I’ve seen what they’re up against. Saudi Arabia’s roads are some of the toughest in the world, not because they’re poorly built (far from it – in fact they’re surprisingly good), but because of the demands they place on trucks. Long stretches of highway under a blazing sun, sandstorms that can grind parts down, and heavy loads needed for the Kingdom’s ever-growing infrastructure projects all mean one thing: a truck that isn’t built or adapted for these conditions is going to struggle. And when the truck struggles, so does your bottom line.

Getting your fleet customised doesn’t just help the vehicles survive the environment; it helps them thrive in it. Reinforced chassis, upgraded cooling systems, and trailers that distribute loads better can make all the difference. Yes, these upgrades cost more initially, but think about the alternative: breakdowns on the side of those remote roads, frustrated

drivers, missed deadlines, and mounting repair bills. It’s not just about keeping trucks on the road; it’s about keeping them running profitably for years.

Speaking of drivers, they’re always the backbone of the industry, and it’s tough out there for them. Long hours behind the wheel, uncomfortable conditions, and unforgiving terrain can take a real toll. Customising trucks to improve driver comfort - better seating, reliable climate control, and smart cab designs - doesn’t just make their lives easier; it makes them better at their jobs. Happier drivers are safer drivers, and safer drivers mean fewer accidents and less downtime.

The trucking industry in Saudi Arabia is feeling the spotlight right now. With the ambitious Vision 2030 projects transforming the country, the demand for reliable and efficient transport has never been higher. Fleet operators who get their specs right will not only meet this demand but also gain a serious edge over the competition.

At the end of the day, tailoring trucks and trailers to Saudi conditions isn’t just smart – it’s necessary. It’s about understanding the challenges, respecting the demands, and setting yourself up for success in one of the toughest yet most exciting markets in the world. For operators here, the question isn’t whether to customise - it’s how far you’re willing to go to get it right.

Continuing an ambitious strategy for the Saudi market, Al-Futtaim Auto & Machinery Company (FAMCO) has launched a new 3S (Sales, Service & Spare Parts) facility in the Saudi capital.

There is an overwhelming need for an upgrade of aftersales support in Saudi Arabia. The market may be experiencing an industrial boom driven by the Vision 2030 programme, but fleet owners and contractors are often asked to deal with demanding schedules which stretch their operations across huge territories in under-developed and remote locations.

“The growing economic activity in Saudi Arabia demands uninterrupted operations”

Located on Al-Kharj Road, the facility features 15 service bays, 55 offices, and a spacious

customer support area, FAMCO’s Managing Director, Ramez Hamdan said that the opening reflected the rapidly expanding importer’s commitment to supporting Saudi Arabia’s growing infrastructure demands.

“The growing economic activity in Saudi Arabia demands uninterrupted operations,” said Hamdan. “Our new 3S facility reflects our commitment to contributing to the heavy equipment and commercial vehicle ecosystem through end-to-end integrated products and services.”

For the past decade, FAMCO KSA has been bolstering the importing of its key brands with on-the-ground support. It also secured the exclusive rights for Ashok Leyland, bringing together a regional heavyweight and the fourth-largest bus-maker in the world, earlier this year.

Tata Motors says its World Smart Truck concept can help Saudi Arabia meet its ambitions

At the Heavy Equipment and Truck (HEAT) Show in Saudi Arabia, T&FME joined Tata Motors for a significant milestone in the company’s longstanding partnership with the Kingdom. For more than 30 years, Tata Motors has been a trusted name in Saudi Arabia, supplying vehicles that have not only supported businesses but also played a critical role in the nation’s development.

Now, as the Kingdom undergoes rapid transformation under Vision 2030, Tata Motors is set to deepen its impact with the launch of the Tata Prima 4440.S AMT and its World Smart Truck concept.

We sat down with Mr. Anurag Mehrotra, Head, International Business, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, and Mr. Azeem Khan, Managing Director of M. Mohamed Yousuf Naghi Motors Co., Tata Motors’ Saudi distributor. Together, they discussed the company’s nation-building

philosophy, its deep-rooted presence in Saudi Arabia, and how the Tata Prima range of trucks are uniquely tailored to meet the demands of the Middle Eastern market.

Tata Motors has been a key player in Saudi Arabia for over three decades, evolving alongside the Kingdom’s growing economy and infrastructure needs. “Saudi Arabia has always been a strategic market for Tata Motors,” says Mehrotra. “From the beginning, our vehicles were built to meet the practical needs of businesses, but

as the country’s ambitions have grown, so have our products. Today, we’re delivering trucks that are not just functional but advanced, innovative, and aligned with Saudi Arabia’s vision for the future.”

The partnership with M. Mohamed Yousuf Naghi Motors has been instrumental in ensuring Tata Motors’ success in the Kingdom. With a vast network of service centres, trained technicians, and reliable access to Tata Genuine spare parts, Naghi Motors provides comprehensive after-sales support that maximises vehicle uptime and strengthens customer confidence. “Reliability doesn’t just come from the truck - it comes from the ecosystem that supports it,” says Khan. “We’ve invested in infrastructure and services that ensure our customers can trust their Tata vehicles for years to come.”

This commitment to customer success reflects Tata Motors’ broader philosophy of nation-building. Mehrotra emphasises that the company sees its role in Saudi Arabia as more than just a provider of vehicles.

“Our trucks help build roads, transport goods, and connect communities. They are an integral part of the infrastructure that supports the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. This is why we see ourselves as partners in progress.”

Introducing the World Smart Truck Concept

At the HEAT Show, Tata Motors unveiled its newest addition to the Tata Prima series - the Prima 4440.S AMT, an Automated Manual Transmission truck built on the World Smart Truck platform. Designed to merge global engineering with local insights, the Prima series is the embodiment of Tata Motors’ innovation and customer focus. “The Prima is more than a truck; it’s a symbol of what Tata Motors stands for - quality, reliability, and a commitment to meeting the unique needs of our customers,” Mehrotra says.

The Prima 4440.S AMT has been engineered for versatility, making it ideal for applications like container transport, car carriers, and heavy equipment logistics. Powered by an 8.9-litre Euro-V Cummins engine, it delivers 400hp and 1,700Nm of torque, ensuring exceptional performance in challenging conditions. Advanced features such as Load-Based Speed Control, Gear Down Protection, Vehicle Acceleration Management, and Idle Stop optimise fuel efficiency and enhance operational reliability, key considerations for businesses in Saudi Arabia’s competitive logistics sector.

We are building solutions for tomorrow”

The World Smart Truck concept focuses on creating vehicles tailored to the specific needs of regional markets. In Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, this means designing trucks capable of withstanding extreme heat, traversing rugged terrains, and supporting industries like logistics, construction, and mining.

“The Saudi market has been central to the Prima’s development,” Mehrotra says. “Every aspect of the truck - from its powertrain to its cabin design - has been

optimised for the demands of this region.”

Tata Motors also showcased the high-performing Prima 4040.T, designed for fuel and water tankers, and the Prima 4040.K, engineered for construction and mining operations. These models underscore Tata Motors’ dedication to delivering comprehensive solutions for Saudi Arabia’s fast-growing infrastructure and logistics sectors.

Driver comfort has been a key pillar of the Prima’s design, reflecting Tata Motors’ commitment to improving the lives of those who use their vehicles. The Prima 4440.S AMT features electronically controlled pneumatic suspension, an aircushioned seat, and a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, offering a smooth, ergonomic driving experience.

“When drivers are comfortable, they are more productive,” Mehrotra explains. “This benefits not only the driver but also the fleet operators, who see improved efficiency and reduced downtime.”

The suspended cabin design and advanced handling systems address the challenges of long-haul journeys across Saudi Arabia’s vast and often harsh landscapes. Intelligent driving systems further enhance the driver experience, ensuring safety and ease of operation even in demanding conditions.

A new benchmark for environmental responsibility”

Scania Middle East, while expressing his enthusiasm for the launch.

“With an impressive 8% fuel savings and enhanced emissions control, the Scania SUPER Powertrain sets a new industry benchmark for efficiency and environmental responsibility,” he tells T&FME

According to Ocampo, the new system offers a smoother drive and an extended horsepower range of up to 560 hp, “ensuring superior operational performance.

The new powertrain and chassis are engineered to perfection, providing outstanding technical robustness and longer operational service, making it the ideal choice for fleet owners who prioritise profit, performance, and the planet.”

Unmatched Fuel Efficiency

At the core of the SUPER Powertrain is a design that addresses one of the primary concerns for fleet operators: fuel efficiency. The powertrain achieves an impressive 8% improvement in fuel savings, a substantial gain that directly impacts profitability. This heightened efficiency is partly due to the dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) design, which improves exhaust gas exchange, enabling more efficient combustion.

Complementing this is Scania’s TwinSCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, a dual-injection AdBlue system that reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and adheres to the strictest global standards, keeping fleets compliant while cutting down on fuel consumption. These advancements contribute to an unprecedented 50% brake thermal efficiency, an industry-leading standard. This superior thermal efficiency means more of the engine’s energy is converted into power, reducing waste and maximising fuel use. For individual customers, the platform offers unparalleled convenience by reducing the complexity of parts procurement. For fleet managers, it provides a comprehensive solution for managing the demands of diverse fleets, ensuring that both time and cost savings are maximised.

Redefining Logistics

One of the most critical aspects of Autotek.ae’s operations is its logistics strategy, which ensures timely delivery to customers across the UAE and beyond. Subrayan highlights the importance of efficient logistics in meeting modern buyer expectations: “To meet the demand for quick and reliable delivery, Autotek.ae places equal emphasis on its logistics capabilities as it does on providing accurate product information.”

Autotek.ae achieves this by maintaining a robust internal infrastructure, including multiple stock points, warehouse facilities, and transport capabilities. Additionally, it partners with leading logistics providers such as Emirates Post, Aramex, DHL, and FedEx to handle local and international deliveries. For bulk international orders, strategic agreements such as the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DP World enable the platform to offer value-added tools like container load calculators, sea freight rate comparisons, and digital container tracking. “These tools are specifically designed to facilitate bulk orders from international customers, such as those in Africa, enhancing the transparency and efficiency of their logistics needs,” says Subrayan. This emphasis on logistics ensures that customers receive their parts on time, even for complex international shipments. It also reflects Autotek.ae’s commitment to reliability and customer satisfaction, key factors in maintaining trust in the competitive automotive aftermarket.

Bridging the Tech Gap

The automotive aftermarket has traditionally been slow to adopt digital transformation, with many procurement processes still relying on manual methods. Subrayan contrasts

this with Autotek.ae’s streamlined approach: “In a typical garage scenario, the process of procuring parts is time-consuming and involves multiple steps. Customers often face higher costs due to inefficiencies and limited access to real-time price information.”

Autotek.ae eliminates these inefficiencies by offering direct access to pricing and availability through its AI-powered platform. Customers simply enter their vehicle’s VIN and specify the required part, and the system provides real-time price comparisons across a range of options. “This transparency allows users to see all available choices and make decisions that best suit their needs,” explains Subrayan. Once selected, the parts are delivered directly to the garage within 24 hours, significantly reducing downtime and enhancing repair efficiency.

Trust is another cornerstone of Autotek. ae’s success. The platform’s commitment to transparency extends beyond pricing to include product quality. Only OE (Original Equipment) parts and high-quality Tier 1 and Tier 2 aftermarket products are listed, ensuring that customers receive reliable components every time. “We maintain direct relationships with principal manufacturers and utilise live inventory and pricing data to ensure that our customers can rely on the quality and availability of every part we offer,” Subrayan says.

Behind the scenes, data analytics and forecasting play a critical role in Autotek.ae’s operations. By analysing historical sales data, customer demand trends, and seasonal variations, the platform ensures that its inventory levels align with market needs. “Data analytics and forecasting are pivotal to our inventory

management strategy,” Subrayan notes. “This proactive approach minimises stockouts and reduces excess inventory, optimising the supply chain for efficient operations.”

Real-time analytics also allow Autotek. ae to identify gaps in inventory and address them quickly, ensuring uninterrupted service for customers. These capabilities enhance the platform’s operational efficiency while further building trust with its users.

Looking ahead, Autotek.ae is focused on staying at the forefront of innovation in the automotive aftermarket.

“We envision a future where e-commerce and AI redefine the industry, making it more accessible, transparent, and efficient,” says Subrayan. The platform is already exploring advanced features such as predictive maintenance tools, which will provide customers with proactive alerts and recommendations for parts replacements. By integrating IoT, AI, and data analytics, Autotek.ae aims to lead the Auto 4.0 revolution, creating a cohesive ecosystem that benefits both individual consumers and corporate clients.

“We’re combining technology with customer-centric design to create a platform that not only meets today’s needs but anticipates future demands,” Subrayan concludes. “By continuously adapting to evolving expectations, Autotek.ae is setting new benchmarks in the automotive e-commerce landscape.”

With its commitment to innovation, transparency, and trust, Autotek.ae is transforming the automotive aftermarket and proving that even the most traditional industries can be revolutionised through technology..

CONNECTED

Harkesh Jaggi, VP, Sales & Marketing for Michelin MENA talks driving the future of sustainable fleets in the Middle East

By strategically integrating connected fleet technologies, utilising the power of data, and prioritising sustainability, Middle Eastern fleet managers can optimise operations, reduce costs, and position their businesses as leaders in the region’s green economy. Here are some essential ways organisations can future-proof their fleets.

Data is the lifeblood of modern fleet management. Fleet operators must harness the power of information. By collecting, analysing, and acting upon data, fleet managers can optimise operations, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability, transforming their fleets from cost centres into profit centres. From vehicle performance and location tracking to fuel consumption and driver behaviour, data provides invaluable insights. Advanced analytics can uncover hidden patterns, predict maintenance needs, and optimise routes for maximum efficiency. For example, by identifying vehicles with suboptimal fuel consumption, fleet managers can implement targeted training for drivers or schedule preventative maintenance to improve performance.

Ultimately, data-driven decision-making empowers fleet operators to achieve operational excellence. The last mile, the final leg of the delivery journey, is a critical determinant of customer satisfaction. In today’s fast-paced, e-commerce-driven world, delivering goods quickly and efficiently is imperative.

Smart job management solutions, powered by data analytics, are essential tools for achieving this. By analysing delivery data, fleet managers can identify bottlenecks, optimise routes, and allocate resources effectively. Realtime visibility into the delivery process allows for proactive issue resolution and improved customer communication. As e-commerce continues to expand in the Middle East, mastering last-mile delivery will be a key differentiator for businesses. The MENA region’s total e-commerce market size is expected to reach $57 billion by 2026, making last-mile delivery efficiency critical for meeting growing demand.

Digital tools are revolutionising fleet management by enhancing efficiency and safety. With mobile applications, drivers can conduct thorough vehicle inspections and report issues in real time, ensuring

Additionally, advanced technologies like TPMS provide early warnings of potential problems, helping to maintain vehicle health and reduce maintenance costs. By embracing digital solutions, fleet managers can enhance efficiency, improve driver safety, and extend the lifespan of their vehicles

The shift towards EVs is a practical and strategic choice for fleet operators, however optimising routes, promoting eco-driving, and investing in vehicle maintenance are essential components of a comprehensive sustainability plan. These practices not only reduce fuel consumption and emissions but also enhance operational efficiency and lower overall costs. In the Middle East, where sustainability is increasingly prioritised, fleet managers have a unique opportunity to lead the charge

toward a greener transportation sector. By embracing electrification and implementing sustainable practices, fleet operators can contribute to a cleaner environment, reduce operational expenses, and strengthen their brand reputation. It’s a win-win for both the planet and the bottom line.

Effectively managing a fleet requires a delicate balance of cost control, compliance adherence, safety assurance, and asset optimisation. Traditional methods are often overwhelmed by the complexity of these demands.

Connected fleet solutions offer a transformative approach. By integrating telematics, IoT, and data analytics, these platforms provide real-time visibility into fleet operations. This empowers fleet managers to make data-driven decisions, optimise routes, enhance driver safety, and predict maintenance needs. The result is a more efficient, compliant, and cost-effective fleet.

An example of this is the secondgeneration range of KMAX S EXTREME GEN2 on-road long-haul tyres, specifically designed to endure the hot climates of the Middle East and Africa. This second generation not only reduces operating costs and maximises tyre life under high ambient temperatures but also achieves a minimum 20% increase in mileage on the steer axle compared to the first generation.

What are some of the key challenges Goodyear faces in the Middle East?

The automotive sector, like all others, is focusing on reducing its carbon footprint to help the world achieve its sustainability goals. The growing trend towards electrification, even in fleets, is a testament to this. As fleets aim for greater sustainability, there is a parallel expectation for components like tyres to contribute meaningfully to this journey. As a leader in tyre technology, we are guided by our Better Future Framework, which supports our climate commitment: Goodyear aims to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050, starting from a 2019 base year. While Goodyear currently has no manufacturing in the Middle East, our commitment to sustainable sourcing permeates our global manufacturing footprint, which spans 55 facilities across 22 countries. For instance, Goodyear has pledged to use 100% renewable electricity in all manufacturing facilities by 2030 and 100% renewable energy by 2040. We are also developing a tyre made entirely of sustainable materials by 2030 and will replace all petroleum-derived oils in our products by 2040. Our annual Corporate Responsibility Report tracks and communicates our progress towards these ambitious targets. We support fleet sustainability through tyres that enhance fuel efficiency and durability, which is crucial in harsh environments. An example of this is the launch of our EQMAX and EQMAX ULTRA premium truck tyre ranges in Europe. Depending on size, these tyres contain up to 55% sustainable materials, including Rice Husk Ash (RHA)-based silica. With a new tread compound containing a higher silica content, the EQMAX and EQMAX ULTRA tyres offer up to 20% better mileage and 6% improved rolling resistance compared to their predecessors.

Goodyear is also promoting solutions such as TireOptix, which helps maintain optimal tyre pressure. This reduces breakdown risks and ensures efficient fuel consumption, contributing to lower CO2 emissions. These initiatives are designed to support fleet efficiency and align with Goodyear’s commitment to sustainable practices.

How important is the Middle East region for Goodyear’s overall business? This is a vital region within our global business. As a leading tyre partner to major fleets in the region, we support our fleet customers in overcoming operational challenges as they pursue their business objectives. Increasingly, fleet customers look to tyre manufacturers like us to help lower operational costs. They now expect a comprehensive offering that includes

tyres, mobility solutions, services, and digital applications. Together, these can deliver optimal results in end-to-end tyre management for fleets, yielding significant benefits. Generally, there are two main cost drivers in fleet maintenance: fuel and tyre replacement. While fuel cost is not something we directly control, tyre choice does impact a fleet’s fuel consumption. Tyres with lower rolling resistance enable fleets to achieve higher fuel economy during operations. Fleets are also keen to monitor tyre performance in real time, which is a significant advantage. Our truck tyre portfolio, including products like the Assurance Fuel Max, reduces rolling resistance by up to 27%, potentially saving up to 4,000 km worth of fuel over the life of four tyres.

Goodyear Total Mobility, with digital solutions like TireOptix, offers fleet operators insights into tyre performance with the convenience of mobile device access. tyre condition, pressure, tread depth, and vehicle load in seconds, providing fleet managers with essential data as vehicles return to base.

How do you help fleet operators and transportation companies to improve tyre management and performance?

As one of the leading tyre manufacturers, Goodyear not only delivers high-quality and durable tyres to our fleet customers but also acts as an enabler in their digitalisation journey. Our digital technology solutions, such as TireOptix and Goodyear CheckPoint, play an increasing role in offering our fleet customers peace of mind with end-to-end fleet deployment. From long-haul to passenger transport and last-mile deliveries, Goodyear has empowered clients like Al Salem Transportation & Tourism Company in Saudi Arabia and Masafi in the UAE to make informed decisions, optimising their fleets’ performance and enabling them to deliver on their mission.

Looking ahead, what are your key priorities?

With over 125 years of heritage, Goodyear’s ability to navigate regional challenges speaks to our sustained success in managing our operations. We work with our distributors to stay close to customers and anticipate their needs for our products and services. Trusted local partnerships are crucial in scaling our offerings across the region.

As a dependable provider of tyre technology, we remain committed to delivering reliable, high-quality tyres and advanced digital solutions to our fleet customers. Looking ahead, our priorities include expanding our presence, enhancing product availability, and continuing to support our fleet customers with products and digital tools that meet the evolving needs of the Middle East market.
