WHAT WOULD MY PERFECT CAB LOOK LIKE?
I’m often being told that machinery launching here is being designed with the Middle East in mind, but what does that actually mean? To find out, I’ve been speaking with operators, manufacturers, and site managers to understand their preferences and priorities. It’s clear that the perfect cabin for the region isn’t just about surviving the heat — it’s about creating an environment where operators can thrive. Well, mostly.
You would say effective air conditioning is non-negotiable in the Middle East, but it’s not just about cooling; intelligent climate control is key. A system that adjusts airflow and temperature based on cabin occupancy and exterior conditions keeps operators fresh and focused throughout the day. UV-resistant windows that block the harsh sun while maximising visibility are equally essential.
Comfort really does play a significant role, especially during long shifts. An adjustable seat with lumbar support and vibration dampening can reduce fatigue, while intuitive control layouts and a centralised touchscreen interface minimise unnecessary movement and maximise efficiency. Large, easy-to-read displays help reduce the risk of operator error.
Telematics should be the heart of any modern machinery cabin. Real-time connectivity to monitor performance, fuel levels, and maintenance needs is invaluable, particularly in remote areas. A dashboard system linked to the cloud
allows for seamless tracking and quick resolutions to potential issues. Voiceactivated controls for hands-free operation could also be a game-changer.
Safety is also increasingly paramount. In other markets, cameras offer 360-degree views and blind spot detection ensures full situational awareness, while proximity sensors and collision avoidance systems provide extra layers of protection. These features are critical on busy construction sites where visibility is often compromised. But not common here. They should be.
Finally, the little conveniences make a big difference. A docking station for smartphones, USB charging ports, is a given for a tech-head like me but if you’re working long hours, a small storage compartment for personal items seems a must. As should be a compact fridge even. A drink cooler can be a game-changer when temperatures soar past 40°C.
The perfect cabin is an investment in productivity, safety, and operator wellbeing. Sadly that is not always the situation on site.

ELECTRIFICATION BATTERY MARKET PROJECTED TO REACH US$8 BN
The electrification of CAM machines is on the rise, with the battery market for these sectors projected to reach US$8 billion by 2034, according to a new report by IDTechEx. The report, “Battery Markets in Construction, Agriculture & Mining Machines 20242034,” delves into the different battery chemistries available to support this shift and examines the benefits and challenges of electrifying CAM machinery.
The study by IDTechEx, which gathered data from over 200 electric CAM machines, identifies LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) as the leading battery chemistries, given their popularity in the
automotive sector. However, newer battery technologies, like lithium titanate (LTO), present opportunities for faster charging without compromising battery longevity. LTO batteries could extend machine lifecycles beyond 10,000 charge cycles, compared to the approximately 5,000 cycles of existing NMC and LFP technologies, offering significant cost advantages for operators.
IDTechEx also points to solidstate batteries as a promising option for improving the safety and energy density of electric CAM machines. This could be particularly beneficial for equipment like underground loaders and mini excavators, which operate in confined environments.

MB-350: WHEN TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION
The ancient art of dry stone walling has found a new ally to complete the job swiftly, with precision with zero effort: MB Crusher.
Dry stone walling is a traditional construction technique rooted in many cultures around the world, especially common in Europe. These structures are crafted without any binding agents, relying on the precise interlocking of stones, where the weight and precise placement of each stone are used to create durable and resilient barriers. In addition to defining boundaries and shaping landscapes, they serve important ecological roles: they protect against desertification and soil erosion, help prevent landslides, and provide shelter for a range of animal and plant species.
Despite the benefits of these structures, building and maintaining dry stone walls requires significant skill and meticulous attention to detail, making skilled labourers increasingly rare and valuable. The guardians of this tradition must carefully select and place each stone to ensure stability and longevity. However, thanks to technological advancements, even these traditional techniques can now be enhanced by equipment that simplifies construction, speeds up the process, and delivers maximum precision with minimal effort— handled by a single operator seated in a machine.
MB Crusher’s MB-G selection grabs step in to lend a hand, enabling operators to grip, move, and position stones of all shapes and sizes with
exceptional accuracy, precision, and safety. As MIvanovich, owner of Battaglia Costruzioni in Italy, shared, “Purchasing the MB-G350 selection grab was a game-changer for us— we can do whatever we want.”
Currently working in a hilly park, he is building a dry stone wall with the local stone -Euganean trachytea highly durable stone also used to pave much of Venice’s walkways.
In just four days, with the MBG350 selection grab, Ivanovich managed to process 42 cubic metres of trachyte, creating a 52-metre-long dry stone wall averaging 160 cm in height. This would have required at least five workers and 35-40 days of labour. He adds: “Opening and closing the grab is incredibly simple. After only ten minutes, the machine works as if it’s been in operation
for months. You can work with precision, slotting the stone exactly where you want it, turning it…It’s unique.”
The MB Crusher grab is also ideal for constructing riprap embankments, commonly used along rivers in both mountainous and flat areas. These embankments vary by function but generally aim to protect banks from erosion and to control water levels. Here too, this isn’t a matter of merely piling stones but rather a painstaking process made easier, more precise, and safer with the MB Crusher selection grab.
Dry stone walls have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage asset, but they need to be “kept in practice”—enabled, passable, feasible, and sustainable, not just preserved as museum pieces.
ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE IN ACTION
THE RED SEA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, A CORNERSTONE OF SAUDI ARABIA’S VISION 2030, IS NOT JUST A MARVEL OF MODERN DESIGN BUT ALSO A TESTAMENT TO THE POWER OF ENGINEERING INGENUITY AND COLLABORATION
Situated in one of the most remote and logistically challenging regions of the Kingdom, this project exemplifies the convergence of cuttingedge technology, architectural innovation, and sustainable construction practices. At the heart of its construction is Spider Plus, a company whose specialised equipment and expertise have proven pivotal in overcoming the immense challenges posed by this ambitious project. Working alongside Reem Emirates, Spider Plus and its machines have played a critical role in turning this vision into reality.
Last month, CMME joined the Spider Plus team on-site to witness their machinery in action and gain insights into the collaborative efforts that are helping to shape this world-class gateway to the Red Sea.
The Machinery Driving Progress
Spider Plus’s contributions to the Red Sea International Airport are centred on their deployment of highly specialised lifting equipment, including advanced spider cranes, spider lifts, vacuum lifters, and precision manipulators . These machines are specifically designed to address the demands of high-stakes construction in environments where conventional lifting solutions are impractical.
Among the standout cranes in Spider Plus’s fleet is the UNIC URW-376, renowned for its compactness and versatility. With a lifting capacity of 2.9 tonnes at 2.5 metres, a maximum lifting height of 14.9 metres, and a width of just 700mm, this crane is ideal for navigating the airport’s tight spaces. For larger-scale tasks, the UNIC URW-546 offers a lifting capacity of 4.0 tonnes at 2.5 metres and a maximum height of 16 metres.
During the site visit, CMME observed the UNIC URW-706, which excels in confined areas. With a lifting capacity of 6 tonnes at 3 metres and a maximum height of
Many areas on the project require precision equipment capable of operating on uneven terrain and accommodating restricted access points – exactly where Spider Plus machines excel.
“Traditional
cranes alone couldn’t meet the precision requirements of this project. The manipulators were crucial in providing fine control over large and delicate materials, ensuring they could be positioned accurately without damage”
19.5 metres, it has been instrumental in handling the heavier components of the project. Meanwhile, the DT30 Spider Lift , equipped with a 30.2-metre working height and a 15.5-metre horizontal reach, has provided the range and manoeuvrability required for elevated tasks. For the heaviest operations, the UNIC URW-1006 delivers a powerful 10-tonne lifting capacity at 3 metres while maintaining the compactness necessary for restricted spaces.
Manipulators: A Game-Changer
The integration of vacuum lifters and manipulators with Spider Plus’s cranes has been a game-changer for the Red Sea International Airport project, particularly for installing oversized glass panels and prefabricated GRC components.
Gerry, Project Manager at Reem Emirates, explained: “Traditional cranes alone couldn’t meet the precision requirements of this project. The manipulators were crucial in providing fine control over large and delicate materials, ensuring they could be positioned accurately without damage.”
The manipulators used on-site work in tandem with the cranes, offering rotational, tilting, and extending movements. This allowed operators to adjust the positioning of heavy panels with millimetre precision. For example, manipulators equipped with vacuum lifters could secure glass panels weighing up to 1.2 tonnes, lifting them into place and tilting them to the required angle before final placement.
“Handling glass panels that are over 4 metres tall and weigh upwards of a tonne
is no small feat,” noted Eddie Nobrega, Regional Sales Manager at Spider Plus. “Our manipulators enable operators to make precise adjustments mid-air, eliminating the risks associated with manual handling. This was particularly important for sections where the panels had less than a metre of clearance on either side.”
Another example of the manipulators’ utility was their role in installing GRC panels on irregular façades. The manipulators allowed Spider Plus’s team to lift panels to heights exceeding 30 metres, rotate them as needed, and carefully manoeuvre them
into tight spaces. The combination of the cranes’ lifting power and the manipulators’ precision control was instrumental in achieving seamless installations in challenging environments.
Gerry added: “There were sections where we needed to lift panels at odd angles to accommodate the curved façade designs. The manipulators worked perfectly with Spider Plus’s cranes to ensure these tasks could be completed without delays or complications.”
Innovating in Complex Environments
The architectural complexity of the Red Sea International Airport, characterised by its signature glass façades, irregular rooflines, and shaded garden areas, presented significant challenges. These areas required precision equipment capable of operating on uneven terrain and accommodating restricted access points.
In one of the project’s most intricate tasks, manipulators were paired with vacuum lifters to position glass panels with precision, ensuring they aligned perfectly with the façade design. “Precision is everything,” Eddie said. “The manipulators allowed for fine adjustments, ensuring safe and efficient installations even in the tightest spaces.”
Logistical Mastery in a Remote Location
The Red Sea International Airport’s remote location, over 2,000 kilometres from Abu Dhabi, added another layer of complexity to the project. Transporting heavy equipment across such distances required meticulous planning and seamless execution, particularly at border crossings where delays could stretch into weeks.
Joe Duffy, General Manager, Spider Plus recounted: “There were times when delays at the border took up to two weeks, creating significant challenges. Each piece of equipment had to be prepared to ensure it could start work immediately upon arrival. For oversized components, modular transport systems were used to maintain stability during transit.”
Joe continued: “The logistical hurdles weren’t just about distance. Once the equipment arrived, it had to contend with extreme heat, sandstorms, and limited infrastructure. Spider Plus’s cranes are engineered with weather-resistant hydraulic systems and reinforced seals, ensuring consistent performance in even the harshest environments.”
Coordinating Complex Workflows
The airport’s ambitious timeline, with
a soft opening planned for December, has demanded unparalleled levels of coordination. Spider Plus implemented parallel workflows to enable simultaneous operations across multiple sections of the site. This approach was particularly effective during the installation of the terminal façades, where lifting operations had to align with ongoing interior fit-out work. Eddie highlighted the role of daily on-site meetings in maintaining project momentum. “Real-time monitoring and regular communication allowed us to adapt quickly to changing priorities. This level of coordination prevented bottlenecks and kept the project moving efficiently,” he said.
Sustainability at the Forefront
Aligned with Vision 2030’s sustainability goals, Spider Plus has prioritised ecofriendly operations throughout the project. The company deployed hybrid cranes and spider lifts to minimise emissions and reduce noise pollution.
“Our hybrid and electric equipment not only reduce emissions but also operate more quietly, which is ideal for sensitive areas like landscaped zones,” Eddie
“ Every stage of this project has been an opportunity to showcase what we can achieve when technology, expertise, and collaboration come together. The Red Sea International Airport is more than a project—it’s a legacy”
explained. “We’re proud to contribute to a project that’s setting new standards for sustainability in construction.”
Leaving a Legacy
Spider Plus is once again proving that its team is able to provide advanced machinery and a collaborative approach to the most demanding of projects in the region.
As the Red Sea International Airport nears completion, Spider Plus’s work stands as a testament to the role of advanced machinery and collaboration in realising ambitious projects. “This project has challenged us to innovate at every step,” Joe reflected. “From logistical planning to on-site execution, every solution we implemented was tailored to the
unique requirements of this landmark development. It’s a privilege to contribute to something so transformative.”
Gerry echoed this sentiment: “The collaboration with Spider Plus has been integral to our success. Their ability to adapt to the site’s challenges and their unwavering support have left a lasting impression. This project is a milestone not just for Reem Emirates but for the region as a whole.”
Eddie summarised Spider Plus’s approach: “Every stage of this project has been an opportunity to showcase what we can achieve when technology, expertise, and collaboration come together. The Red Sea International Airport is more than a project — it’s a legacy.”
As Reem and Spider Plus continue their work on site, the machines are proving that they can make an invaluable contribution in shaping Saudi’s infrastructure development. Their contributions to the Red Sea International Airport are like to be just one of many opportunities in the coming years to prove their ability to deliver high-impact solutions in even the most challenging environments and demanding of projects.

Commitment to Localised Support
Central to LiuGong’s expansion strategy is its commitment to a strong, well-supported dealer network, which the conference highlighted. Lee Lihong underscored the importance of partnerships, noting, “We don’t just view our dealers as part of a network but as long-term partners who play a crucial role in our global strategy. They provide insights, understand local markets, and help us continuously improve. This collaboration is essential to our success.”
LiuGong is leaning into the local knowledge of dealers and investing in their networks and support as it grows. LiuGong demonstrated its appreciation of their efforts by recognising the top-performing dealers, including the UAE’s own Gargash GT which topped off a fine first year alongside its Chinese partner by picking up a number of awards including Best New Dealer. In line with this, the company also signed intent purchase orders with partners, set ambitious goals for 2025, and secured strategic partnership agreements with key customers. Reflecting LiuGong’s deep commitment to its dealer relationships, Lee Lihong added, “The Middle East is a significant market, and building trust and rapport with local dealers is crucial. We now see our dealers not only as sales
representatives but as valued partners in our long-term global strategy.”
Having displayed and demonstrated the machines at the Festival, the global conference was an opportunity to deep dive into LiuGong’s focus on sustainable and customer-centric innovations. The company’s range of electric and autonomous equipment clearly resonated with the audience, but it was also a powerful demonstration of how far LiuGong’s impressive repositioning from its early forays into global markets as a provider of costeffective alternatives to competitive, highquality machinery with a value proposition has come. It now has the machines – and customer support – to compare favourably with the biggest brands in the industry across a wide range of applications: “A decade ago, Chinese brands were often seen as low-cost and low-quality,” Deng Tao reflected. “Today, we are proud to offer products that are not only cost-effective but also at the forefront of technology and quality.”
Delegates were also invited to visit LiuGong’s highly automated factories for wheel loaders and excavators, where they witnessed state-of-the-art production capabilities. The tour showcased the advancements LiuGong has achieved in automation and precision manufacturing,

Lee Lihong commented, “Our goal is to provide reliable, intelligent machines tailored for the unique challenges of the Middle East, including high temperatures and remote locations. Our subsidiary in Saudi Arabia will strengthen our presence, offering dedicated support and tailored products to our clients in the region.”
With this focus on automation and technology, LiuGong’s wheel loader and excavator factories illustrated the company’s drive to enhance production efficiency and quality control, positioning itself as
a major player in the global construction equipment market. “We have our local R&D centres in key regions, including the Middle East,” explained Deng Tao. “These centres enable us to adapt our products to specific environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, ensuring they are built to last.”
LiuGong’s financial success for the first three quarters of 2024 underscores its robust market position. With a total revenue of 22.86 billion RMB, reflecting an 8.25% increase year-on-year and a 59.82% rise in net profit, Chairman and CEO Zeng Guang’an attributed this growth to LiuGong’s global market strategy and focus on highdemand sectors such as mining. Guang’an emphasised LiuGong’s ambition to enter the top tier of the global construction machinery industry within the next decade.
“LiuGong is a truly global company, and much of our revenue now comes from overseas,” Deng Tao shared with CMME “With global manufacturing, R&D, and service centers, we’re prepared to support our long-term, sustainable presence.” Lee Lihong echoed this sentiment, noting that the rapid expansion into new regions, such as Saudi Arabia, demonstrates its dedication to adapting to diverse market needs and fostering local relationships. With over 6,500 electric units sold and a continued investment in intelligent manufacturing, LiuGong is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable machinery, and this should open up opportunities across the world for its dealers. “We are not just competing on price anymore,” remarked Deng Tao. “We are leading in technology and innovation, creating a promising future for LiuGong and its extensive network of dealers and customers.”
As it closes in on its 70th anniversary in 2028, this is a company that is now fully prepared to meet the demands of a sustainable and technology-driven future.
