Valencia College ranks 1st among the nation’s two-year colleges in the number of associate degrees earned.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW Valencia College offers a six-month study abroad program that combines academic coursework at Valencia with a real-world training experience at the Walt Disney World Resort. The program is designed to meet the needs of students working toward a degree in one of the following areas of study: • • • • • • • •

Hospitality, Tourism and Attractions Management Leisure and Recreation Management Restaurant and Food Services Management Business and Operations Management, Marketing and Administration Communications, Public Relations and Organizational Communication Culinary Management Baking and Pastry Management Organizational Psychology, International Relations and Economics

Participants in this program will have the opportunity to learn how businesses operate in the United States, gain real-world experience working for a world-renowned entertainment company and make friends from around the world. Valencia will provide opportunities for students to participate in local field trips and cultural immersion excursions to learn about American culture. Students live in company-sponsored, fully furnished, two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments near the Walt Disney World Resort.

As part of the program, participants are enrolled as full-time students at Valencia and will receive a total of 12 credits in the following courses:

ACADEMIC COURSES Business Management Course (3 credit hours): This course teaches students the skills they will need as managers in today’s global economy. Course topics include customer service, professional image, teambuilding, diversity and culture, presentation skills, decision making, communication skills, management skills and attitude. Disney Collegiate Course (3 credit hours): Students can choose from any one of nine Disney Collegiate Courses: Advanced Hospitality Management, Experiential Learning, Human Resource Management, Interactive Learning Program, Organizational Leadership, Corporate Analysis, Corporate Communication, Creativity and Innovation, and Marketing You.

ACADEMIC TRAINING Academic Training Practicum (3 credit hours): This internship course focuses on the specific training roles at the Walt Disney World Resort including on-the-job learning activities. Students will earn a competitive hourly wage. Academic Training Online Course Outline (3 credit hours): This professional development course guides students through their internship course via reflective assignments in constructing a personal career development plan. Once the academic training practicum has begun, the faculty member meets with students to discuss program goals and assignments. Assignments are monitored via email and chat rooms for the duration of the program. Students receive a certificate from Valencia upon successful completion of the program, and a transcript with letter grades is provided to their home institution.

SCHEDULING Students will spend approximately six to eight hours in class per week, plus approximately four hours per week for homework. Courses will not be scheduled during holiday weeks. During the academic training practicum, students will be scheduled at the Walt Disney World Resort between 30 and 37.5 hours per week except during peak seasons when they may be scheduled more than 37.5 hours.

ELIGIBILITY In order for students to be enrolled in this program, they must satisfy the following requirements: 1. The student’s primary purpose in the United States must be to study rather than work. 2. The student must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing at their home school. 3. The Academic Training Practicum must be related to their major field of study. 4. The student must meet the minimum English language requirements. 5. The student must have completed their first year of study.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS Students must demonstrate an English proficiency level of high intermediate. Below is a description of proficiency at a high intermediate level: Speakers at this level are able to converse with ease and confidence when dealing with most routine tasks and social situations. They are able to successfully handle many uncomplicated tasks and social situations requiring an exchange of basic information related to work, school, recreation, particular interests and areas of competence, though hesitation and errors may be evident.

INCOME AND LIVING EXPENSES Students can earn approximately $250 per week (before taxes). Housing costs are approximately $90 per week. Students should plan to pay for plane fare, taxi and hotel if arriving before the start date. Bring money for food and living expenses for two weeks prior to receiving the first complete paycheck in the second week.
