Das Andaz Am Belvedere liegt inmitten des neuen pulsierenden Stadtviertels nahe dem Hauptbahnhof. Wie jedes Andaz Hotel soll es die lokale Kultur in all ihren Aspekten authentisch widerspiegeln. The Andaz Am Belvedere is at the heart of the pulsating neighborhood around the Hauptbahnhof. Like all Andaz hotels, it is conceived to reflect all aspects of the local culture.
Was ging Ihnen durch den Kopf, als man Ihnen anbot, das Andaz Am Belvedere als General Manager zu übernehmen? Ich wollte das schon immer! Mein Partner lebt und arbeitet seit 2016 in Wien und ich wusste, dass Hyatt dieses Projekt hier betrieb. Wir sind gemeinsam zur Baustelle marschiert, haben in die Baugrube geschaut und ich dachte, okay, das wird einmal ein Andaz (lacht). Ich habe den Verantwortlichen dann von meinem Wunsch erzählt, und zum Glück hat es funktioniert.
Gözde was born and grew up in Turkey and studied tourism & business administration as well as hospitality management. She has 25 years of experience in top international hotels and has worked for the Hyatt hotel group since her career began in 1994. Since 2013 she has been a general manager for the Hyatt Group in four different countries. What went through your mind when you were offered the position of General Manager of the Andaz Am Belvedere? It’s what I always wanted! My partner has lived and worked in Vienna since 2016 and I knew that Hyatt had this project here. We went over to the construction site together, looked into the excavation pit and I thought, ok, this will be an Andaz one day (laughs). I told the people responsible how I felt and luckily it worked out. Andaz is based on a completely new concept.What are the hotel’s highlights?

Geboren und aufgewachsen in der Türkei, studierte Gözde Eren Tourism & Business Administration sowie Hospitality Management. Sie verfügt über 25 Jahre Erfahrung in der internationalen Spitzenhotellerie und ist seit Beginn ihrer Karriere 1994 für die Hotelgruppe Hyatt tätig – seit 2013 war sie General Manager der Hyatt Group in vier verschiedenen Ländern.
Eigentlich wollte Gözde Eren Architektin oder Archäologin werden. Zum Glück konnte sie ihr Vater davon überzeugen, dass die Hotellerie alle ihre Interessen – von Kunst und Kultur über Geschichte bis hin zu Reisen – am besten vereinen würde.

Andaz verfolgt ein ganz neues Konzept. Was sind die Highlights dieses Hotels? Der Standard ist natürlich genau so, wie man ihn von einem 5-Sterne-Haus erwartet. Der Unterschied liegt im ganzen Umfeld, den Mitarbeitern, der Art, wie man etwas präsentiert und lebt und so auch den Gästen vermittelt. Wir möchten, dass jemand als Reisender kommt und als Einheimischer geht. Wenn man sich im Internet informiert, bekommt man auf jeder Seite dieselben Empfehlungen für Wien. Wir aber wollen das anbieten, was Einheimische mögen. Zum Beispiel Marillenkrapfen anstatt von Mozartkugeln. Der Platz, die Location, die Gerüche und Geschmäcker, das alles ergibt ein Ganzes, und wenn man Wien wieder verlässt, sollte man diese ganzheitliche Erfahrung gemacht haben. Es geht darum, eine Verbindung herzustellen, das wollen wir im Andaz schaffen. Es soll nicht nur ein Hotel für Gäste sein, sondern auch ein Ort der Begegnung. Für wen genau? Für kreative Menschen, für Leute, die neue Erfahrungen machen wollen, für Rockstars (lacht). Für Menschen, die tatsächlich ein wenig „Andaz“ sind. Wir spielen gerne mit dem Wort, das im Deutschen wie „anders“ klingt: Sei „Andaz“, wir sind „Andaz“.
Sie haben das Andaz tatsächlich einmal als „Rockstar“ der Hyatt Gruppe bezeichnet. Was meinen Sie damit? Es ist glamourös, mutig, frech, schwimmt gegen den Mainstream. Und es hat diese verschiedenen Aspekte, die auch Rockmusik hat. Denn Rockmusik ist ja nicht simpel gestrickt, sondern hat verschiedene Einflüsse. Die Mitglieder großer Rockbands wie Deep Purple oder Queen waren ja auch immer große Virtuosen. Wir wollen auch virtuos sein in dem, was wir tun, aber eben freier, rebellischer, andersartiger als der Mainstream. Welche Voraussetzungen muss man denn mitbringen, wenn man, wie Sie, ein Haus mit 303 Zimmern und 200 Mitarbeitern führen soll? Ich denke, es geht in erster Linie um gute Organisation, Energie und Leidenschaft. Einer meiner Leitsätze lautet, die Dinge einfacher zu machen anstatt sie zu verkomplizieren. Man kann viele Regeln aufstellen und ein großes Drama aus allem machen, wird sich darin aber nur verlieren. Man muss Probleme erkennen und sie lösen. Ein Team führen zu können, ist die wichtigste Voraussetzung. Man arbeitet genauso im Team wie alle anderen 200 Menschen auch. Ich sage zu Beginn jedes neuen Trainings: Du arbeitest hier, ich arbeite hier, jeder von uns hat einen anderen Verantwortungsbereich, aber im Grunde sind wir alle gleich. Die Auswahl des Personals ist sicher ein wichtiger Aspekt. Woher bekommen Sie qualifizierte Mitarbeiter? Viele kommen aus anderen Hotels, weil sie von Andaz gehört und sich beworben haben. Wir wollten aber von Anfang an auch Leute aus anderen Branchen dabei haben, die „out of the box“ denken. Ich glaube, wir haben einen guten Mix gefunden, 80 % kommen aus der Hotellerie, 20 % aus anderen Berufen. Nun leben Sie bereits einige Monate in Wien. Haben Sie schon einen Lieblingsplatz in der Stadt? Den Belvederegarten, durch den ich jeden Tag in die Arbeit gehe. Ich denke Gözde Eren liebt ihren neuen mir dann manchmal, die ganze Welt Wohnsitz: „Es hat schließlich einen Grund, warum Wien kommt nach Wien, um den Belvederezum zehnten Mal in Folge zur garten zu sehen, und für mich ist er der lebenswertesten Stadt tägliche Arbeitsweg. Wie fantastisch! Ich gewählt wurde!“ habe auch eine Jahreskarte für das Gözde Eren loves her new Belvederemuseum, die ich auch oft home: “There’s a good reason nutze. Naturally the standard is what you’d expect from a 5-star hotel. The difference is in the whole environment, the employees, the way things are presented and conveyed to the guests.We want people to arrive as travellers and leave as locals. If you look up Vienna on the Internet, you always get the same recommendations. We want to offer the things that the Viennese themselves love, for example apricot dumplings instead of Mozart balls. The place, the location, all the scents and flavors are what make up the whole picture, and when people leave Vienna, they should have experienced all of it. It’s about forming a connection. That’s what we want to create at the Andaz. It is conceived not just as a hotel for guests but also as a meeting place. Exactly who should be meeting here? Creative people, people who want to experience new things, rock stars (laughs). People who are different. We like to play with the word Andaz, which sounds like the German word “anders”, meaning different. Be “Andaz”, we’re “Andaz”. You actually once called the Andaz the “rock star” of the Hyatt

Group.What did you mean by that? It’s glamorous, bold and brazen and it swims against the current. It’s not mainstream and it actually has various aspects that are like rock music. Rock isn’t straightforward or simple. It has many influences.The members of rock bands like Deep Purple and Queen were great masters of their art and we also aspire to virtuosity, only freer and more rebellious, different from the mainstream. What prerequisites do you need to manage a hotel with 303 rooms and 200 employees? I think it’s foremost about being a good organizer and bringing energy and passion to the job. One of my mottos is: Make things simpler, not more complicated.You can create a large number of rules and make a big drama out of everything but you’ll just lose yourself. It’s important to recognize problems and solve them. The most important skill is the ability to lead a team.You have to be part of the team just like the other 200 employees. At the beginning of every new training session I say: “You work here, I work here, we all have different spheres of responsibility but basically we’re all the same.” Choosing your personnel must be one important aspect.Where do you find qualified employees? Many come from other hotels because they’ve heard about the Andaz and applied for a job. But right from the start we also wanted people from other lines of work, who think “outside the box”. I think we’ve found a good mix. 80 % come from the hotel business and 20 % from other professions. You’ve been living in Vienna for a few months now. Have you already found a favorite spot in the city? The Belvedere Garden, which I walk through every day on my way to work. Sometimes I think, the whole world comes to Vienna to see the Belvedere Garden and for me it’s just the way I walk to work every day. How fantastic is that? I also have a yearly ticket to the Belvedere Museum, which I use a lot. And I love the Musikverein! Apart from rock music, classical music is a must for me.

Zum Beispiel das LOWER BELVEDERE, dessen Name direkt auf Prinz Eugens Prachtbau zurückgeht. Mit 705 m² und einer Raumhöhe von 5,1 Metern großzügig dimensioniert, bietet die Eventlocation mit modernster Technik samt in der Decke integrierten Beamern sowie beweglichen Leinwänden Platz für bis zu 650 Personen.

With its 2,200 m2 of meeting and event space, the Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere is ideal for conferences, car presentations, board meetings or special celebrations. Clients have at their disposal a variety of facilities, all of which reflect our ongoing relationship with Prince Eugene, our former neighbor and resident of Schloss Belvedere. There’s the LOWER BELVEDERE, 705 m² in size with a ceiling height of 5.1 meters. This event location boasts stateof-the-art technology, including beamers integrated into the ceiling and movable screens. The room accommodates up to 650 people. The FOYER LOWER BELVEDERE is somewhat smaller and includes an integrated cloakroom. Thanks to a separate entrance, it also offers the opportunity for private events not connected with the hotel. In addition to a glass front and natural lighting, the 345 m² FOYER

In conversation, 35-year-old Richard Leitner seems extremely calm. He probably has to be, as it sometimes gets quite hectic in the kitchen. Born in Salzburg, he is now responsible for the culinary aspect of the Hyatt ‘Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere’. He always wanted to be a cook, started in small restaurants and made his way through the entire spectrum from “stadium to starred restaurant” but he has always liked working in hotels best. For example at the ‘Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere’, where the culinary focus is also on individuality and a relationship with the local area. The name of the restaurant, ‘Eugen21’, was deliberately chosen because the restaurant is located close to the Belvedere Palace, the former summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, and opposite the contemporary art museum Belvedere 21. The restaurant seats 100 guests and, with its charmingly creative and yet discreet interior, comfortably blends culture with the culinary arts. This concept is complemented by an Austrian and European wine list as well as traditional cocktails, beers and Viennese coffees. The hotel’s culinary program also includes a relaxed ‘Eatery’, a lobby bar and a lounge.

Im Gespräch wirkt der 35-jährige Richard Leitner extrem ruhig. Vermutlich muss er das auch sein, geht es in einer Küche doch auch oft hektisch zu. Der gebürtige Salzburger zeichnet für die Kulinarik des Hyatt-Hauses „Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere“ verantwortlich. Er wollte immer Koch werden, hat in kleinen Restaurants begonnen und das gastronomische Spektrum vom „Stadion bis zum Sternelokal“ durchgemacht. Am liebsten hat er aber immer in Hotels gearbeitet. So wie beim „Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere“ insgesamt legt man auch beim kulinarischen Angebot Wert auf Individualität und nimmt Bezug auf die lokale Umgebung. Der Name des Restaurants, „Eugen21“, wurde daher bewusst gewählt, liegt das Haus doch in Nachbarschaft des Belvederes, der Sommerresidenz von Prinz Eugen, und vis-à-vis des zeitgenössischen Museums Belvedere 21. Das Restaurant bietet Platz für 100 Gäste und überzeugt durch eine kreative und doch unaufdringliche Innenarchitektur, in der Kultur und Kulinarik miteinander verschmelzen. Die österreichisch-europäische Weinkarte, kombiniert mit traditionellen Cocktails, Bieren und Wiener Kaffees, vervollständigt das Konzept. Das kulinarische Programm wird mit einer legeren „Eatery“, einer Lobby-Bar und der Lounge ergänzt.

Es gibt in Wien viele gute Restaurants. Was macht das Eugen21 besonders? Wir haben ein sehr gutes, eingespieltes Team mit erfahrenen Leuten in der Küche und im Service. Küchendirektor ist Stefan Resch, der sowohl das Park Hyatt Vienna als auch das Andaz betreut. Wir wissen, was wir voneinander erwarten und was die Gäste von uns erwarten. Wie wird die Küchenlinie sein? Wir wollen traditionelle österreichische Küche mit regionalen Produkten ins Hier und Jetzt bringen. Wir verstehen uns als modernes Wirtshaus und wollen ein tolles Service bieten. Wir setzen Techniken aus der modernen Küche ein und schaffen so auf Basis der Gasthauskultur ein schönes Restauranterlebnis. Wie wird die Speisekarte aussehen? Da gibt es einerseits die klassische Gasthauskarte mit Gulasch, Innereien oder Wiener Schnitzel – wenn wir kein Schnitzel hätten, wären die Gäste enttäuscht. Burger wird es bei uns allerdings nicht geben, dafür österreichische Gasthausküche mit neuen Ideen. Wir werden die Karte hier auch regelmäßig erneuern. Können Sie uns ein Gericht verraten? Ich lasse mich ungern festlegen, weil es ein sehr kreativer und

What will the cuisine be like? We want to bring traditional Austrian cuisine made with regional products into the here and now. We’re a modern establishment and want to provide great service. We use modern cooking techniques to create a pleasant restaurant atmosphere based on tavern-style dining. How will the menu look? On the one hand we’ll have the traditional Viennese dishes like Gulasch, various types of offal and Viennese Schnitzel – people would be disappointed if we didn’t serve schnitzel.We won’t have any burgers but there will be traditional Austrian food with a new twist. We’ll also be changing the menu regularly. Can you reveal one of the dishes to us? I don’t like to be specific because this is a very creative and expressive profession. I like to present the best product possible in a given season. We’ve also based our desserts on traditional Viennese dishes. With a large kitchen though, there are other challenges. Often people don’t understand why certain dishes are not served, or why they’re different to the way they’re served at home. Were you nervous before the opening? Not really, just positively charged. It’s a great responsibility. You have to question everything to make sure it makes sense. But it’s wonderful to see how the things you helped create develop. I don’t need to worry about stress – I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I find it all great fun.

Eigentlich nicht, nur positiv angespannt. Es ist eine große Verantwortung, man muss alles hinterfragen, damit es Hand und Fuß hat. Aber es ist auch schön zu sehen, wie sich die Dinge entwickeln, die man mitaufgebaut hat. Ich brauche keinen Ausgleich zum Stress, ich mache das seit 20 Jahren, und es macht mir einen Riesenspaß.

Aurora – was für ein mythischer Name, der gleich tausend Bilder im Kopf entstehen lässt. Das Polarlicht auf der Nordhalbkugel – Aurora borealis – ist eine Leuchterscheinung, die in Polargebieten beim Auftreffen beschleunigter, geladener Teilchen auf die Atmosphäre hervorgerufen wird. Womit wir schon beim Thema wären: Aurora ist nicht irgendeine Bar, sondern bietet neben Bar-Klassikern skandinavisch inspirierte Drinks und Snacks. Edles Naturholz wurde zu schicken und trotzdem bequemen Möbeln verarbeitet, kombiniert mit viel Glas und Edelstahl. Barchef ist Marcus Philipp. Der gebürtige Wiener machte nach fünf Jahren in einem Architektenbüro seine wahre Leidenschaft zum Beruf. Der Cocktail-Experte schaute nächtelang den Barkeepern zu. Seine erste Station war der „Planter’s Club“, „dann hat der Spaß begonnen“, sagt er. „Spelunke“, mehrere Jahre in der „Albertina Passage“ und zuletzt die „Sky Bar“ folgten. Als Vertreter Österreichs eroberte er im internationalen Finale des wohl wichtigsten Barkeeper-Wettbewerbs
Aurora – a mythical name that conjures up a thousand pictures in your head. The polar lights – aurora borealis – is a luminous phenomenon that occurs in polar regions when accelerating, charged particles strike the atmosphere. Aurora is not just any bar, but offers iconic spirit classics along with Scandinavian-inspired drinks and snacks. Natural wood has been made into chic yet comfortable furniture, combined with lots of glass and stainless steel. Marcus Philipp is the barman. Born in Vienna, he spent five years in an architect’s office before deciding to turn his true passion into a career. The cocktail expert watched bartenders nightly. His first stop was the “Planter’s Club”, “then the fun started,” he says. Next came “Spelunke” followed by “Albertina Passage” for a few years, most recently he resided at the “Sky Bar”. Representing Austria, he scored a spot in the top ten at the international finals of the most important bartender competition in the world (Diageo World Class). “Hobby, passion, job, vocation” fits him 100 percent – and you can feel it. What’s so special about the bar Aurora? This is a new concept for Vienna: Scandinavian-oriented, clear

Why Scandinavia? We spend too much time in the box. I’m glad I can help people climb out and see the world. Will there be a signature drink? When the muse knocks, let her in (laughs). We have a list of 15 Signature cocktails in five categories: From Vienna with Love, Shrubs and other Plants, Smoked, In the Footsteps of Vikings and Wanderlust. It’s basically a journey to discover whatever’s out there … Is there a foundation spirit you plan to use? Aquavit, the caraway brandy. We get it from a small distillery in Åhus in southern Sweden. They’ve been producing vodka for centuries in the same still. Some guests approach the taste gingerly – it’s like a sweet licorice. This aquavit is dominated by earthy cumin and refreshing, fall-harvested rosemary followed by light citrus fruitiness and sweet fennel. We serve it with tonic, as an alternative to classic gin and tonic. Does it have a name? A&T, which also happens to be the abbreviation for Austria, stands for Åhus & Tonic. We use a special tonic, and of course it’s a drink that’s pleasing to the eye as well.

Aquavit, ein auf Kümmel basierender Brand. Wir holen ihn uns aus einer kleinen Destillerie in Åhus in Südschweden, die seit Jahrhunderten in derselben Brennblase auch Wodka herstellt. Wir müssen die Gäste langsam an den Geschmack heranführen, das ist wie bei einem Lakritzzuckerl. Bei diesem Aquavit dominieren erdiger Kümmel und erfrischender, herbstlicher Rosmarin die Nase, gefolgt von hellen Zitrusfrüchten und süßem Fenchel. Wir werden ihn mit Tonic servieren, als Alternative zum klassischen Gin Tonic. Wie wird der Drink heißen? In Anlehnung an G&T eben A&T, das steht einerseits für die Abkürzung für Österreich, aber auch für Åhus Tonic, so schlagen wir wieder die Brücke zwischen den beiden Ländern. Wir verwenden auch ein spezielles Tonic und selbstverständlich wird beim Anrichten auch das Auge verwöhnt.

Ebenso beeindruckend wie die Architektur des großzügigen Glaskomplexes, sind auch die Ausstellungen im Belvedere 21 – Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst immer wieder Höhepunkte im musealen Getriebe der Stadt. 1958 vom Wiener Architekten Karl Schwanzer als ÖsterreichPavillon für die Weltausstellung geplant und mit dem Grand Prix d’Architecture ausgezeichnet, galt das Gebäude mit seinen klaren Formen und gläsernen Hallen als Paradebeispiel moderner Bauweise und zählt heute zu den architektonisch wichtigsten Beispielen der Nachkriegszeit. Im Anschluss an die Weltausstellung für museale Zwecke adaptiert, wurde der Pavillon im Schweizergarten wiederaufgebaut

Just as impressive as the architecture of this generous glass complex are the exhibitions shown at the Belvedere 21 – Museum of Contemporary Art, exhibitions that have become highlights of Vienna’s museum calendar. The building was designed in 1958 as the Austrian Pavilion for the World Fair by the Viennese architect Karl Schwanzer and it won him the Grand Prix d’Architecture. With its clear lines and glass halls it was then considered an outstanding example of modern construction techniques and today it is among the most important architectural designs of the post-war period. After the World Fair the pavilion was relocated to the Schweizergarten in Vienna and adapted to become a museum space. It opened as a museum in 1962

Unter dem Begriff „20er Haus“ etablierte es sich rasch als Institution für zeitgenössische moderne Kunst in Wien. 2002 vom mumok an das Belvedere übergeben, wurde das Haus 2007 von Adolf Krischanitz renoviert und im November 2011 feierlich wiedereröffnet. 2018 erhielt es schließlich seinen heutigen Namen Belvedere 21 und versteht sich als Ort künstlerischer Produktion, Rezeption und Reflexion, in dessen Mittelpunkt die österreichische Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts steht. Neben drei Ausstellungsebenen beherbergt das Haus auch die Artothek des Bundes und das Archiv des bedeutenden österreichischen Bildhauers Fritz Wotruba. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird auf das umfangreiche Kunstvermittlungsprogramm mit Filmvorführungen, Vorträgen, Performances und Künstlergesprächen gelegt. In den nächsten Monaten hat das Belvedere 21 zwei sehr interessante Ausstellungen im Programm: Noch bis 2. Juni zeigt „Über das Neue. Junge Szenen in Wien“ die unterschiedlichen Positionen einer Generation junger Künstlerinnen und Künstler in Wien. Und von 28. Juni bis 27. Oktober präsentiert die in Berlin lebende italienische Künstlerin Monica Bonvicini eine ortsspezifische, für das Belvedere 21 entwickelte raumgreifende Installation.

under the name “20er Haus” and quickly became established as an institution dedicated to contemporary art in Vienna. In 2002, the mumok transferred the building to the Belvedere, after which it was renovated in 2007 by Adolf Krischanitz and ceremoniously reopened in 2011. In 2018, it was given the new name Belvedere 21 and it is now a location for artistic production, receptions and reflection, focusing on Austrian art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Apart from its three floors of exhibition space, the building is home to the “Artothek des Bundes” (federal art-lending collection) and the archive of the famous Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba. One of the main focuses of the institution is its extensive art education program, including films, lectures, performances and talks with artists. In the coming months, the Belvedere 21 has two interesting exhibitions scheduled. Until June 2nd the varying positions of a generation of young artists in Vienna will be examined in “On the New. Young Scenes in Vienna”. From June 28th to October 27th the Italian artist Monica Bonvicini, who currently lives in Berlin, will present an extensive installation created specially for the Belvedere 21.
