A magical space to admire works of art and a joyful baroque garden close to downtown Vienna – the Belvedere.

Dass mit Prinz Eugen von Savoyen ausgerechnet ein nur 1,50 Meter großer, geborener Franzose zum berühmtesten Kriegshelden der Habsburger wurde, entbehrt nicht einer gewissen Ironie. Der Sieger über die Türken ließ sich ab 1713 eine riesige Schlossanlage bauen, die – gemessen an den Besucherzahlen – auf Rang 4 aller Sehenswürdigkeiten Österreichs liegt. Das Belvedere feiert heuer – 300 Jahre nach der Fertigstellung der Sommerresidenz des Prinzen – ein Jubiläum.

IMMER SCHON ORT DER KUNST

Dabei waren das Obere und das Untere Belvedere immer schon Heimstätten der Kunst, denn Prinz Eugen war bekannt für seine vielen Kunstwerke, die er auch gerne herzeigte. Als kaiserliche Kunstsammlungen waren diese eines der ersten öffentlichen Museen weltweit – ab 1777 bei freiem Eintritt zugänglich. It is not without a certain irony that Prince Eugen of Savoy, a Frenchman at only 1.5 meters tall, became the Habsburgs’ most famous war hero. The victor over the Turks had a huge palace built starting in 1713, which – measured by visitor numbers – ranks fourth among all of Austria’s historical sites. The Belvedere is celebrating its jubilee year – 300 years after the completion of the heroic Prince’s summer residence.

Longstanding Venue For The Arts

The Upper and Lower Belvedere buildings have always been a home for art, and Prince Eugen himself was known for his numerous works of art, which he also liked to display. As Imperial art collections, these exquisite venues were among the first public museums in the world, open to all – with free admission – from 1777. The motto of the anniversary year “Golden Spring” is intended to unite tradition and modernity. The exhibition “Klimt. Inspired by Van Gogh, Rodin, Matisse” at the Lower Belvedere aims to place the museum’s

Aufbruch vereinen. Die Ausstellung „Klimt. Inspired by Van Gogh, Rodin, Matisse“ will im Unteren Belvedere den wohl berühmtesten Künstler des Museums kunst­ und ideengeschichtlich einordnen. Und das malerische Frühwerk von Louise Bourgeois wird als Entdeckung im Jubiläumsjahr ab 22. September im Unteren Belvedere gezeigt. Erstmals in Europa präsentierte Gemälde der 1930er und 1940er Jahre werden in Bezug zum späteren skulpturalen und grafischen Schaffen der feministischen Künstlerin gesetzt. Generaldirektorin Stella Rollig: „Mit dem 300­jährigen Jubiläum des Belvedere feiern wir nicht nur die Entwicklungen der Vergangenheit, sondern besonders die, die vor uns liegen.“

Das Belvedere heißt nicht zufällig so –italienisch für „schöne Aussicht“. Vom Oberen Belvedere hat man einen eindrucksvollen Blick über Wien, den sich auch Besucher, die keine Zeit für die Kunstwerke haben, gönnen sollten. Die Anlage lädt zum Bummeln ein. Der Aufstieg von unten nach oben ist mittels Figuren als ein Weg vom Hades zum Olymp gestaltet.

The name “Belvedere” is no coincidence – it means “beautiful view” in Italian. From the Upper Belvedere you are treated to an impressive view over Vienna, which all visitors – even those who do not have time to view the many works of art – should not miss. The entire complex also lends itself to a leisurely stroll. The ascent from the bottom to the top features sculpted figures charting a path from Hades to Olympus.
