WHILE I HAVE YOU By A C Harlow
A book review by Gill Sherry Rarely do I feel compelled to write a review after reading a novel. Occasionally, however, I am left spellbound by a story and/or by the prose that tells that story. In the case of While I Have You, the debut novel by A C Harlow, it was the final chapter that prompted me to share my reading experience. The story follows the forbidden but, perhaps, inevitable relationship between Justin and Leah. As well the age difference between the two main characters, there is also Justin’s marriage to Marcella, and Leah’s casual union with Justin’s brother, Tristan, to complicate this modern-day love story. The author delves deeply into the emotions of both Justin and Leah, describing their inner battles and moral dilemmas in captivating detail. Leah’s journey to adulthood is far from smooth and behind the mature attitude she is vulnerable and insecure, often resorting to self-harm. ‘She longed to feel something beyond the numbness that always followed the end of her time with Justin. The intense stabbing sensation felt better. Didn’t it? It was better. It was what she deserved.’
Publisher: Embossed Ink Published: UK, January 2021 Price: £8.99 (Paperback) £4.99 (Kindle edition)
Justin’s feelings for Leah are complex, his need for her friendship combining with the desire to protect her and his longing for a more intimate connection. Despite his marriage and the imminent birth of his first child, the author explores his thoughts so comprehensively and so sympathetically, it is difficult to judge him or, indeed, dislike him. ‘She was young and sweet and perfect. It was
impossible not to want to know more, not to want to engage her in conversation not to want to make her laugh, have her bite her lip or blush with embarrassment.’ To distance herself from Justin, Leah travels to Cambodia with Tristan. The country is brought to life by the author’s first-hand descriptions and by Leah’s heart-wrenching experiences so many miles from home. The reader is swept along on a tide of emotions: grief, loneliness and hope. Needless to say, Justin and Leah do, eventually, reunite and it is this reunion that makes up the final, breath-taking chapter. It is shocking and sad in equal measure, but, as an ending, entirely satisfying. While I Have You is so much more than a love story. It deals with the complex issues of sexual assault, post-natal depression and self-harm. And rather than focus on the predictable topic of deceit, it examines the sacrifices made by each character in their struggle to do the right thing, highlighting their distress and, ultimately, their acceptance. To conclude, it is realistic, well written and brave. It is also one of the few books that has left me speechless. Well done A. C. Harlow, that’s no mean feat! ‘She wondered how long they could orbit each other without colliding. Two halves of a planet separated by light years, both uninhabitable: one without gravity, the other without oxygen.’ www.cpmagazine.net

This is probably the most common food in Morocco and one that you’ll find in almost every restaurant. It is a savory stew that is typically made with meat, poultry or fish together with vegetables or fruit. Everything is slow cooked together inside of a clay pot with a conical lid (both the food and the clay pot it is cooked in are referred to as a “Tajine”). Make sure you try all 4 of these typical Moroccan tajines: Lamb or chicken with almonds and either prunes, dates, or plums; Chicken with lemon and olives; Kefta with tomato sauce and eggs; Vegetables

DERMATOGRAPHIA SKIN WRITING
Dr. Nazia Nausheen
Dermatographia is a condition also known as skin writing. When people who have dermatographia lightly scratch their skin, the scratches redden into a raised wheal similar to hives. These marks usually disappear within 30 minutes. This condition affects approximately 5 percent of the population.
16
APRIL 2021
Understanding Dermatographia:
Typically, individuals with dermatographia develop wheals within 15 minutes of skin contact. Symptoms usually persist for a period of 15 to 30 minutes, but in severe cases, large wheals develop, and swelling may be present for hours to days.
Causes of Dermatographia:
It is not known why some people develop dermatographia, but the condition is more common in teens and young women. Cases of dermatographia have been linked to infections, certain medications, and emotional stress. Those with skin conditions that increase the desire to scratch, such as dermatitis, are more likely to develop dermatographia.
Diagnosing Dermatographia:
Because symptoms usually resolve quickly, few individuals with dermatographia are seen in a dermatology clinic. However, those who experience persistent or repeated symptoms are usually diagnosed when a dermatologist observes skin response after moderate pressure is applied in the form of a scratch or stroke.
Treating Dermatographia:
Most patients with dermatographia require no
treatment, although they may be advised to avoid scratching and other physical stimuli known to produce symptoms. Staying well hydrated and using a good skin moisturizer is also advised. General measures include avoiding the stimuli that set off bouts of itch, where possible. For example: • Choose comfortable, loose clothing. • Avoid exposure to very hot water. • Pat dry gently after bathing. • If suspicious of a drug cause, consider stopping it if safe to do so. If treatment is needed, antihistamines usually give good relief from symptoms, Antihistamines may need to be continued daily for at least several months; intermittent therapy is of less value. Dermographism may also respond to phototherapy. Light therapy has shown some efficacy in treating dermatographias, yet most patients relapse within 2 to 3 months of completing therapy. Adjunctive treatment with over the counter vitamin C 1000 mg daily is also found to be helpful. www.cpmagazine.net

Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello everyone. I’m Sarah AlHashimi, a 31 years old fabric lover from Kuwait.
So Sarah, how did you get to where you are today?
I guess by deciding to hold on my dreams and insisting to make it my reality.
How did you fell in love with fabric?
I lived with my grandparents seeing my grandmother with her sewing machine most of the time. I started taking from these fabrics and making dresses for my Barbies and wrap it on me and assume as if people complement my dresses and love my designs. During high school I started asking my grandmother to take me to the fabric store and this is when I knew for a fact that I am madly in love with fabric. I started buying and trying to design. Trial and error taught me a lot about fabrics.
What sparked your interest in fashion?
I feel it fascinating how people can express themselves only by the choices of their clothes. You can tell a lot by the way someone looks.
When and how did you decide to start your own fashion line?
During the Ramadan of 2017, I bought a green fabric and everyone at first laughed at it, because it looked like the fabric we use in our culture to decorate the table of an engagement party. But I loved it! When I love something I just go all the way for it and I did it. I deigned a very beautiful simple dress and as usual I posted it on my personal Instagram account @ Chi7leb and in 2 days I bought all the rolls from the fabric shop because people started placing orders through my personal account and here is when I decided to start my brand.
Why did you name it "Happy Hearts"?
Well the name merge two stories. Surprisingly, everywhere I go I find something with a heart shape and I’m genuinely a happy a person. This is where the name “The Happy Heart” came, where I’m the “happy part” and “heart” is what I see everywhere and I wanted everyone to see a heart and relate it to my brand.
What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line?
I start because I love what I do and I enjoy every moment of it. I had no fear but rather excitement to create more.
How would you describe your designs?
"Wearable emotions", and by the way, this is my brand's slogan.
Where do you take your inspirations from?
I take inspiration from my feelings, my thoughts, what I go through and my life chapters. As you see I 20
APRIL 2021
express myself through my brand. I created Sarah’s love emotion in pink jumpsuit, and Sarah the princess in colorful dress with ruffles, and Sarah’s thoughts on notebook and Sarah’s dream on brooch.
What is your design process from start to finish?
I start with go to the fabric store, falling in love with a fabric, the fabric find itself in Sarah’s imagination being emotions or thoughts. Then I plan where the photo session will be and how the design feels like so I can give the collection a name and then I go to the tailor with the sketches and mood board to start making them alive.
What message do you like to convey through your designs How do you want women to feel when wearing your clothes?
My vision is inspiring others to express themselves individually. We are like snowflake, unique and have our own personality and taste, be brave and express it, own it, love it and don’t be a copy.
How has your work evolved since you began your own label?
In many aspects. First you can notice how it’s personality shows clearly with signature. In addition, now I only use high quality fabrics and also sewing the pieces with very clean finishing; my vision is to make the buyer inherit the pieces so after years their daughters can wear it and granddaughters too. It is like an art pieces. Finally, I created a character for the brand and called it “Happy” and happy became a notebook and brooch and paints.
Where is your collection available to see and buy?
They are available through my website www. TheHappyHeart.me and also on the Instagram account @TheHappyHeart.me
You also started conducting workshop to help people start their own brands. Why did you feel the need for such workshops and how has been the response?
I receive a lot of questions on my personal account daily regarding fabrics, tailors, how to start?, where to go?, I started but now I’m stuck..., I don’t know how to deal with the tailor..., I don’t know what fabric to choose for my designs and more. Therefore, I decided to collect my experience and knowledge and create a workshop on how to start your own clothing line. The workshop is with powerful intention of helping others to make their passion a career. Because I believe those who works with their passion are happy people and with what I’m doing I’m increasing happiness in this world. In addition, I created an account (@ TheHappydesigner.me)dedicate to help those who can’t pay for the workshop and provide tips that can help them to improve and start.
As an experienced teacher, what would you say is the most important thing when you
www.cpmagazine.net
21
are learning to sew; what do you teach first?
Don’t be afraid to be bad at something new and also stop asking others if you are good enough, smart enough, creative enough to do what you love doing. Have a vision.
What is "Happy Talk"?
The happy talk is a YouTube channel where I talk about how to see life from different angles which make them smile while going through life challenges.
What is your favorite part about being a designer?
Being around fabrics and meeting new people. I love fabrics and people. They are similar in how each of them “people/fabrics” are so different yet if you learn to choose wisely, you can have the most beautiful experience and this is fascinating.
What role do you think social media plays in fashion today? I love how social media merge the world and give us the chance to be updated and also to expose our arts and spread it all over the world.
What is a regular day like for you?
My day starts with gratitude for having a new day and new chance to live and then my coffee with music at 7 AM “I’m a morning person”. After that my meditation for 10 minutes and then writing down what I want from this day “love, wealth, new opportunities, joy”. Then of course the most important meal in the day!! my breakfast. After that you can find me at fabric store or the beach.
Tell us about some of your other hobbies.
I love dancing, I can dance for 3 hours nonstop. I also love swimming.
What advice would you give to young designers?
Ask yourself this question “what if I’m the only one existing in this world! Would I think twice before starting, before designing and before choosing? Would I be afraid if no one likes what I design? No. then do it now for yourself and enjoy the journey, enjoy the challenges.
Your message for us at CP magazine.
Thank you for the amazing interview and opportunity to be on your cover. Be ready for “The Happy Words” I’m so excited to be part of CP magazine team.

D
uring my last couple months of my first year of my FormerlyMe journey I started to develop tendonitis in my elbows. Weight training several days a week had started to catch up with me. I had seen many people use these massage guns for relief and I asked Geoff Taylor to help relieve the throbbing pain in my arms. He would use a massage gun and then wrap my arm in a rubber strap to “floss” the blood flow in my arm to alleviate the pain. I would feel immediate relief, but it was short lived.
I was beginning to think that I needed to take a long break from my intense workouts. Then I came to Kelechi Mbonu at Legacy Barbell who is certified in the Neufit system. I explained to him my pain issues in my elbow and forearm and he recommended I focus my Neufit sessions on my forearms. In just one session I had long lasting relief! I woke up the next morning with almost no pain and was able to resume my daily workouts. In fact I have continued to utilize the Neufit system regularly to continue strengthening my forearms to avoid any more issues. Now that I solved my tendonitis issues I was back at 100% in the gym!
The ultimate lesson I learned is that you have to listen to your and pay attention to when it is trying to tell you to slow down Ready to try anything, I then visited STEMLYFT which specializes body and take some rest. In my case I found the right therapy treatment in many therapy treatments. I tried their compression therapy, for my issue, what worked for me may not work for everyone. I cryotherapy, and even their oxygen tank. Although the sessions would suggestbut always reviewing therapy options with a trained and gave me some relief, it was unfortunately still temporary. certified professional. SOE
Glamorous-streetwear brand based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Since 2016 Sultan Ali Al-Najai, Saudi fashion designer, started his brand SOE. The latest chapter of his collection has been released just one month before Ramadan 2021. It is CHAPTER SIX: SABOTAGE 2021 - It's all about women's empowerment, Sultan Al-Najai designed these capes with the careful thought that the model abaya became a Cape. Abayas have been a part of our Saudi culture since a long time ago, the amazing thing when you think about it, a long time ago in the 50’s women wore the same cropped Abayas.! SOE just modified it a little bit. The Cape becomes suitable for every occasion, from working women to Girls hanging out together and everything in between, crafted with the finest washed silk and exquisite colors which show the personality of a strong new modern-day woman. One of the points is that That Cape can be very conservative in Ramadan and it’s easy to wear.

How do you see Saudi Fashion changes in the past 5 years, since you started your own brand? Saudi fashion has changed through the years. We live in a new modern age and from time to time I think that we have to go back to basics to appreciate the beauty of everything, I do this for the fashion community, I’m doing this for the culture, I’m doing this for us. www.cpmagazine.net

1309 launches 'Jupiter Flow' Kaftan Collection for Ramadan Qatar-based ready-to-wear label, 1309, introduces ‘JUPITER FLOW’, a collection of contemporary kaftans in free flowing cuts and lightweight fabrics, just in time for Ramadan. A brand inspired by, and created in celebration of women, 1309 is grounded in a ‘contemporary bohemian’ aesthetic, established by Founder and Creative Director, Ghada Al Subaey. Al Subaey’s goal for this artfully curated collection was to create a capsule of pieces perfect for lounging at home during Ramadan and summer, without compromising on style. Each look converts from breezy loungewear to an elevated evening look with the addition of accessories. The lightweight cottons and silks in the collection have been selected to be ultra light, ultra soft and breathable, many featuring intricate and quirky motifs and embroidery details that the brand has become renowned for. Arabic text as always, plays a part in these decorative details, alongside more fun and playful elements such as the smile emoji, the sun, the palm tree, and planets. Designer Ghada Al Subaey says of the collection, “The motifs in the ‘JUPITER FLOW’ collection are representative of my attachment to, and fascination with nature. I hope the collection brings joy and spontaneity to the day of every girl who wears it!”. At the heart of 1309 is a minimalist, feminine aesthetic, merging seasonal trends with a design perspective informed by the brand’s Qatari roots. Clean silhouettes, bold colour, artful prints and carefully considered detail are hallmarks of the brand. Drawing inspiration from art, nature, and global culture, 1309 combines designs that embody fluidity and elegance with a contemporary edge; a refined statement that celebrates the multi-faceted and versatile nature of women. 1309 is well known for a signature aesthetic, which is often lauded for seasonal signature prints, created in collaboration with Arab artists. Appearing throughout both the brands readto-wear and Abaya collections, these signature prints are a hallmark of the brand, making each collection a collectable ‘work of art’ in its own right. Leopards. Elephants. Water buffalos. Sloth bears. These aren’t the animals you typically associate with a beach retreat, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at Sri Lanka’s Wild Coast Tented Lodge, on the edge of Yala National Park. This spectacular luxury tented camp is situated in a stuning location where the jungle meets a pristine beach, overlooking the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. A nature-lover’s paradise, Wild Coast offers exceptional wilderness experiences, allowing guests to immerse themselves in some of the richest biodiverity in Sri Lanka. Rangers will take you to the quietest corners of Yala National Park and explain the incredible diversity of flora and fauna, including elephants, sloth bears and leopards. Wild Coast Tented Lodge’s unique design, masterminded by a consortium of Dutch, English and Sri Lankan designers, sees the man-made structures blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape thanks to the use of carefully selected natural materials. The use of arched fabric structures allows each of the twenty eight cocoon tents to take on the shape and colour of the rocks and boulders that lay scattered nerby, whilst a clever layout in the shape of a lepard’s paw print alludes to the area’s most famous resident. While the main buildings, made of bamboo, blend in with the distinctive rock formations of Yala, the uniquely shaped tents, called Cocoons & Urchins, truly represent a luxury five star resort room under canvas, offering all amenities including air-conditioning. The open-air bamboo-clad Bar and Dining Pavilion wrap around the resort’s enormous free-form swimming pool. Guests can enjoy creative daily-changing menus of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine in the restaurant, as well as sundowner cocktails and picnic al fresco on the sand dunes, watching dusk settle over the Indian Ocean. www.cpmagazine.net

SWISS BRAND CREATES WATCHMAKING HISTORY WITH NEW COMPLICATION-MONTRES ETOILE COMBINES ISLAMIC AND GREGORIAN CALENDARS IN ONE WATCH EXCLUSIVE COMPLICATION ALSO FEATURES A MOON PHASE
Swiss watchmaker Montres Etoile announced the launch of its first complication, an automatic, tri-retrograde, Islamic Lunar and Gregorian Dual - calendar timepiece with moon face. This complicated wristwatch based on an automatic Swiss made movement is completed by a complication module made by Agenhor in Geneva and is housed in a steel watchcase. The watch is available through select retail partners across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman & Kuwait in time for the Eid gifting season as well as at boutiques and POS in Switzerland, Korea, China and Ukraine. Watch enthusiasts and collectors from other markets can contact the brand through their website. The Islamic calendar began in 622 AD and is still used in most Islamic countries. To integrate the Islamic calendar together with the conventional Gregorian calendar on a mechanical wristwatch is a unique feature worldwide. The Etoile dual-calendar wristwatch is housed in an octangular shaped watchcase measuring 42mm in diameters indicating hours and minutes with two large hands in the center of the dial. The date of the Gregorian calendar is indicated by a retrograde - hand starting from the left at 10 O'clock and ending at the right at 2 O'clock with the 31st day of the month. The date of the 30 days of the Islamic
calendar are indicated at 6 O'clock with Arabic numerals. At 4 0'clock the retrograde hand starts indicating the first month of the Hijri calendar and ends at the left side of the dial at 8 O'clock with the last month. Creatively inspired design and untiring technique have been the driving forces behind Stefan Hafner’s search for innovation in Etoile watches and jewellery since 1967. A collection in which there is play between volume and flexibility in a three dimensional game. Etoile launched its first watch and jewellery line in 1986. It is the famous Swiss Italian creator, Stefan Hafner who designed and manufactured the watches and jewellery of this first collection. At that time, most watches were of very traditional concept. Etoile longed to free its design from conventional restraints and imposed its very own style by creating sumptuously worked wrist watches, blending the erudite geometry of Islamic aesthetics with flowing art Déco designs. Thanks to its audacious and daring designs, Etoile has been introduced successfully in Europe, the Middle and Far-East. That same passion and philosophy inspires the brand today to create new models. By blending aesthetics of sober and pure lines with top quality Swiss movements, Etoile watches, created now created by Fulvio Borel, allow the brand Etoile to reaffirm its unique style. www.cpmagazine.net

City Pages Magazine: Tell us a little bit of your
journey.
Dahlia Razzook: I was born and educated in
Houston, Texas USA before moving to London to study fashion at London College of Fashion. I was offered a couture embroidery design internship at Alexander McQueen in my first year of university. From there, I carried on designing for Panos Yiapanis, Nicole Farhi, Agent Provocateur, Beulah London, Ralph & Russo Couture, and Marchesa. After working for other design houses, I decided it was time for me to open my own. In 2015, I opened my luxury womenswear brand, Dahlia Razzook. We have ready-to-wear pieces and one of a kind Haute Couture pieces made special just for our clients. It is based in London and we show at London Fashion Week. CPM: Who and which things are the inspirations
while creating any design? DR: We always keep the Epic of Gilgamesh in mind as it is the roots to our brand. CPM: According to you, what are the skills that
are necessary for becoming a successful fashion designer? DR: The skills necessary in my opinion is passion. Without the passion and drive you won’t get to where you want to be from start to finish. You also need to be creative, be able to draw, an eye for detail - very critical, be able to sew, have visualisation skills, and computer skills. CPM: How do you stay updated with the trends in the fashion industry? DR: Runways and magazines are a great way with staying up with trends but when I design I don’t look at any of that. I create through my inspiration of my collection. That is what makes it different and unique. CPM: How has your work evolved since you began your own label? DR: Technology has really evolved our business and it still does everyday. CPM: Have your pieces become more appealing to people as a result? DR: Yes! For sure! Def more modern! CPM: You were born in Houston, Texas, and moving
to London to study at London College of Fashion. What city in the world inspires you the most? DR: Def London! There’s so much art and culture in this city! CPM: You’re both the creative and the business
head of your company. How do you balance your time between the two? DR: I have two separate spaces to be able balance both. I block out some time from the creativity side to focus on business. CPM: The Epic of Gilgamesh is your latest project;
tell us more about the collection.
DR: The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from
ancient Mesopotamia. It is also the same place where my family and ancestors are from. The poem is also the first known literature in the world! It’s quite amazing! I really find it interesting!

CPM: Dahlia, your designs are renowned for the digital print and hand-embroidered
details. Where did you learn this combination of craftsmanship and latest technology and what inspired this aesthetic? DR: My BA course at London College of Fashion was Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles. They introduced me into many ways of combining mixed media and art into modern textiles w/ print - going into the past and making it new. I also learned other craftmanship by taking detailed embroidery classes outside university at historic and important embroidery houses in Europe. I have always been amazed by intricate detailed embroidery work and was hungry to learn the trade. CPM: What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work? DR: I am fascinated with new technology in developing textiles for our garments. Technology
is evolving so fast that old media is not even required anymore. You can create anything just off of an iPad now! It truly is amazing!
CPM: What do you aspire to be? DR: Professionally? A Fashion Designer, of course! I think I accomplished this already. Haha.
Personally? To be happy and in good health.

The Last Bookshop in London: A Novel of World War II
by Madeline Martin August 1939: London prepares for war as Hitler’s forces sweep across Europe. Grace Bennett has always dreamed of moving to the city, but the bunkers and blackout curtains that she finds on her arrival were not what she expected. And she certainly never imagined she’d wind up working at Primrose Hill, a dusty old bookshop nestled in the heart of London. Through blackouts and air raids as the Blitz intensifies, Grace discovers the power of storytelling to unite her community in ways she never dreamed—a force that triumphs over even the darkest nights of the war. “A gorgeously written story of love, friendship, and survival set against the backdrop of WWII-era London.”
The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler's Ghettos
by Judy Batalion One of the most important stories of World War II, already optioned by Steven Spielberg for a major motion picture: a spectacular, searing history that brings to light the extraordinary accomplishments of brave Jewish women who became resistance fighters—a group of unknown heroes whose exploits have never been chronicled in full, until now. Witnesses to the brutal murder of their families and neighbors and the violent destruction of their communities, a cadre of Jewish women in Poland—some still in their teens—helped transform the Jewish youth groups into resistance cells to fight the Nazis. With courage, guile, and nerves of steel, these “ghetto girls” paid off Gestapo guards, hid revolvers in loaves of bread and jars of marmalade, and helped build systems of underground bunkers. They flirted with German soldiers, bribed them with wine, whiskey, and home cooking, used their Aryan looks to seduce them, and shot and killed them. They bombed German train lines and blew up a town’s water supply. They also nursed the sick and taught children.

The End of Men
Meet Me in Another Life
by Christina Sweeney-Baird
by Catriona Silvey
The year is 2025, and a mysterious virus has broken out in Scotland--a lethal illness that seems to affect only men. When Dr. Amanda MacLean reports this phenomenon, she is dismissed as hysterical. By the time her warning is heeded, it is too late. The virus becomes a global pandemic--and a political one. The victims are all men. The world becomes alien--a women's world. What follows is the immersive account of the women who have been left to deal with the virus's consequences, told through first-person narratives. Dr. MacLean; Catherine, a social historian determined to document the human stories behind the "male plague"; intelligence analyst Dawn, tasked with helping the government forge a new society; and Elizabeth, one of many scientists desperately working to develop a vaccine.
Thora and Santi are strangers in a foreign city when a chance encounter intertwines their fates. At once, they recognize in each other a kindred spirit—someone who shares their insatiable curiosity, who is longing for more in life than the cards they’ve been dealt. Only days later, though, a tragic accident cuts their story short. But this is only one of the many connections they share. Like satellites trapped in orbit around each other, Thora and Santi are destined to meet again: as a teacher and prodigy student; a caretaker and dying patient; a cynic and a believer. In numerous lives they become friends, colleagues, lovers, and enemies. But as blurred memories and strange patterns compound, Thora and Santi come to a shocking revelation—they must discover the truth of their mysterious attachment before their many lives come to one, final end.
The Dictionary of Lost Words
Second First Impressions
by Pip Williams In 1901, the word ‘Bondmaid’ was discovered missing from the Oxford English Dictionary. This is the story of the girl who stole it. Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the ‘Scriptorium’, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word ‘bondmaid’ flutters to the floor. Esme rescues the slip and stashes it in an old wooden case that belongs to her friend, Lizzie, a young servant in the big house. Esme begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced, discarded or have been neglected by the dictionary men. They help her make sense of the world. Over time, Esme realises that some words are considered more important than others, and that words and meanings relating to women’s experiences often go unrecorded. While she dedicates her life to the Oxford English Dictionary, secretly, she begins to collect words for another dictionary: The Dictionary of Lost Words.

Ruthie Midona has worked the front desk at the Providence Luxury Retirement Villa for six years, dedicating her entire adult life to caring for the Villa’s residents, maintaining the property (with an assist from DIY YouTube tutorials), and guarding the endangered tortoises that live in the Villa’s gardens. Somewhere along the way, she’s forgotten that she’s young and beautiful, and that there’s a world outside of work—until she meets the son of the property developer who just acquired the retirement center. Teddy Prescott has spent the last few years partying, sleeping in late, tattooing himself when bored, and generally not taking life too seriously—something his father, who dreams of grooming Teddy into his successor, can’t understand. When Teddy needs a place to crash, his father seizes the chance to get him to grow up. He’ll let Teddy stay in one of the on-site cottages at the retirement home, but only if he works to earn his keep. Teddy agrees—he can change a few lightbulbs and clip some hedges, no sweat. But Ruthie has plans for Teddy too.
Other People's Children by R.J. Hoffmann Gail and Jon Durbin moved to the Chicago suburbs to set up house as soon as Gail got pregnant. But then she miscarried— once, twice, three times. Determined to expand their family, the Durbins turn to adoption. When several adoptions fall through, Gail’s desire for a child overwhelms her. Carli is a pregnant teenager from a blue-collar town nearby, with dreams of going to college and getting out of her mother’s home. When she makes the gut-wrenching decision to give her baby up for adoption, she chooses the Durbins. But Carli’s mother, Marla, has other plans for her grandbaby. In Other People’s Children, three mothers make excruciating choices to protect their families and their dreams—choices that put them at decided odds against one another. You will root for each one of them and wonder just how far you’d go in the same situation. This riveting debut is a thoughtful exploration of love and family, and a heart-pounding page-turner you’ll find impossible to put down.
Crying in H Mart: A Memoir by Michelle Zauner In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian American kid at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her. Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.

MY
FAVOURITE DISNEY MOVIES Othman Qalfas
Happy Ramadan to everyone and an early Eid Mubarak which is ahead. Ramadan is a family month, we gather for Futoor and Suhoor with the whole family. In Kuwait people don’t go the cinema in Ramadan and the cinemas close during the last 10 days of Ramadan. We usually watch the Arabian Series that are telecasted during this month. But for the love of the family I decided to give you a list of my all time favourite Disney animation movies prior to the year 2000. I hope you love them too and enjoy watching them again.
62
APRIL 2021
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937).
We will start with this animation movie which is the oldest in the list but people still watch it with their children and I personally saw it more than dozen times. It’s about Snow White the prettiest girl whom runaway from her mother in law to meet the seven dwarves that help her. A great movie with great vales.
Cinderella (1955).
One of the most successful animated movies produced by Disney. It’s about Cinderella the nice and lovely girl facing her mother in-law and her two annoying sisters. But the movie show you how being nice always wins in the end. Patience and Good moral is what you will get after watching this movie.
101 Dalmatians (1961).
An animated movie about dogs, but in the same time it presented one of the famous villains of Disney movies “Cruella De Vil”. She is a wealthy woman and obsessed with fashion and trends. Until she decides to make her a coat from Dalmatian dogs hair and then she faces the problems. There is also a movie for this animation with the same story line. So you can choose which one you like.
The Little Mermaid (1989).
This movie is one of my favorite movies and I had it as a VHS tape long time ago but for the readers you can watch it online or on a CD. A lot of memorable songs that will make you play it all day long mixed with a fantastic story. It’s about a mermaid who wants to live among humans, fascinated about their lives and wants to walk like them. Also a great values will be delivered to the audience.
Beauty and the Beast (1991).
I personally like the beast himself. He was a human long ago and he can get back if he found real love before the flower dies. One of the romantic animation movies through the time. If you had the chance to watch it then I’m sure that you love it, but if you did’t watch it yet, (You Must). It has a realistic movie based on the animation.
Aladdin (1992).
Another romantic movie from Disney. Full of lots of hit songs that will stick with you forever. The movie is about Aladdin the poor guy who is a thief in Arabia. With the help of the Gene and the three wishes he gets better life and meets his love Princess Jasmine. Also because this animation was successful, Disney produced a movie based on the Story with “Will Smith” Starring the Gene instead of the deceased “Robin Williams”.
The Lion King (1994).
One of the heart breaking animation of all time. Losing your father and losing your family members. Wanting to be grown up quickly and feeling powerful. What I like about Disney movies is that they focus on values and morals that will be delivered to the children and stick with them. Must watch animation or the new produced realistic movie.
Toy Story (1995).
A successful franchise with four movies starting from 1995 until the last part in 2019. Starring “Tom Hanks” as Woody and “Tim Allen” as Buzz Lightyear. They are both toys belong to Andy the child who owns them. A lot of Adventures turning them from enemies to being best friends. Learn friendship Values through the four movies.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996).
This Movie will be the last in my list and I mentioned it because I personally watched this movie in the Cinema. I even loved to visit the Notre Dame from this animation. It’s a well written movie that will make you anxious and keep you on your toes. I will tell you that this movie has split opinions regarding liking or hating it. www.cpmagazine.net
