FIFA WORLD CUP QATAR 2022 THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS Gill Sherry

Excitement is building ahead of the FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Qatar later this year. If the draw for the tournament is anything to go by, Doha will be giddy with anticipation by the time the first ball is kicked in the city’s brand new Al Thumama Stadium on Monday 21st November. The world’s press converged on the capital for the draw that saw Qatar placed in Group A alongside Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands. Football fans also flocked to Doha on April 1st to bear witness to the star-studded event and catch a glimpse of their sporting heroes including Germany’s Lothar Matthaus and Brazilian legend, Cafu. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani welcomed guests to the Final Draw ceremony before handing over to those with the envied responsibility of conducting the draw.

But despite the hype around both the draw and the tournament itself, there is still much controversy surrounding Qatar’s successful Word Cup bid.

The state has been criticized for its treatment of the thousands of migrant labourers employed to work on stadia and infrastructure with accusations of withheld wages, confiscated passports and squalid living conditions.

8

APRIL 2022

Allegations of bribery, whilst unfounded, continue to blight the project as people speculate how Qatar, with no record of ever qualifying for the World Cup and with little footballing history, managed to beat competition from South Korea, Australia, Japan and the United States. Qatar is also the smallest nation (by area) ever to have been awarded a FIFA World Cup giving cynics another reason to doubt the integrity of the bid.

Something else to raise concerns was Qatar’s desert climate which resulted in the tournament, usually held in June and July, being moved to November and December. This was met with disapproval from the top European leagues set to suffer major disruption as a consequence of the change. The English Premier League, for example, will be suspended mid-season with no matches played between 13th November and 26th December. The recently announced fixture list also raised a few eyebrows. In a break from tradition, the opening match will not involve the host nation who are scheduled instead to take on Ecuador in the third match of the day, kicking off at 7pm local time. Bizarrely, Senegal and the Netherlands have the pleasure of kick-starting the tournament at 1pm, followed by England and Iran at 4pm. Undeterred, Qatar’s foreign minister, Khalid al-Attiyah, insists that this year’s World Cup will be ‘the best World Cup ever’. Not surprising when the estimated cost of the project is placed at around $220bn.

Following the country’s heavy investment, visitors are promised brand new stadia with solar-powered cooling technology as well as luxurious new hotels. The efficient Doha Expressway will provide vital transport links and the recently extended Hamad international Airport will cater to the 1.2 million people expected to descend on the small Gulf state. With the shining jewel of Qatar ready to welcome the world, it promises to be a memorable tournament. So, as the countdown begins to the world’s greatest football competition, it’s time to show a red card to criticism, doubts and allegations. This is the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world and that in itself is something to celebrate.

Others offer unique cultural attractions. And a few offer memorable adventures. It’s just a matter of finding the perfect fit. From the Caribbean to Mexico, this list of tropical vacation destinations covers some of the most beautiful (and not too far) places in the world. Vacation mode starts now!

www.cpmagazine.net

13

Riviera Maya, Mexico

The Riviera Maya is a stretch of Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s northeastern Yucatán Peninsula. It’s known for its all-inclusive resorts, yoga retreats, ancient Mayan ruins, and long, white-sand beaches. Fairmont Mayakoba offers the ultimate tropical beach vacation and is the best way to experience what Riviera Maya has to offer. At Fairmont Mayakoba, guests can spot exotic birds, turtles, and even crocodiles from a resort boat in the mangrove-filled jungle. Marine wildlife lovers can snorkel among sea fans, giant sponges and moray eels, or take a catamaran out on the water. Golfing, spa services, or Mexican delicacy cooking classes are also offered within this tropical paradise. If you can imagine it, they probably offer it at the resort! The private, gated 240 hectares property is surrounded by lush rainforest (that can be cycled along) lined with waterways, right on the Caribbean shoreline.

British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands is a British overseas territory and part of a volcanic archipelago in the Caribbean. It’s known as a haven for yachties, divers, and kiteboarders alike. Saba Rock, an island resort located within the British Virgin Islands, dates back to the 1960s. Saba Rock was put on the map by diving pioneer Herbert Kilbride when he founded his diving base for scuba diving and launched the legendary Pirates’ Pub, which is known for being one of the best oceanfront bars in the Caribbean. Since then, visitors have flocked to Saba Rock for a taste of the “old” Caribbean, from on-the-water adventures and breathtaking scenery to fresh-from-the-sea cuisine. The secluded resort offers kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, diving, windsurfing, yoga, massages, snorkeling, fish feeding, and SNUBA

14

APRIL 2022

Grenada

Grenada is a Caribbean country dubbed as the “Spice Isle” due to numerous nutmeg plantations. Whether you participate in sailing, paddle boarding, fishing, a beachside massage, or lounging away stresses on the white-sand beach with the sounds of the waves lapping against the shore, you will have found paradise at Mount Cinnamon Resort and Beach Club. An added bonus is that Mount Cinnamon Resort and Beach Club supports The South St. George’s Primary School through an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community. If you save just a few pounds of space in your suitcase to take supplies for the project, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of local children and families.

Belize

Belize is a nation on the eastern coast of Central America, with Caribbean Sea shorelines, a dense jungle, and Mayan ruins. Located three miles off the coast of San Pedro, Belize, Cayo Espanto is truly an unforgettable private island retreat. The Cayo region encompasses nature sanctuaries, the majestic Hidden Valley Falls, the lively town of San Ignacio, and many splendid Mayan ruins. Some travelers have claimed to have experienced nirvana from the summit of the main pyramid of Xunantunich, which offers a sweeping vista of the Mopan Valley and Guatemala. The allinclusive resort offers excursions such as scuba diving, fly fishing, mainland tours, bonefishing, private yacht tours, and bird watching tours. Pair that with world-class cuisine and a spa, and Cayo Espanto becomes your private oasis. All of Cayo Espanto’s premium villas are seafront and on the beach with private pools.

Anguilla

Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Eastern Caribbean, is known for its prehistoric petroglyphs and a wildlife conservation site. Frangipani Beach Resort, a family-owned and operated establishment, is a luxury boutique resort in Anguilla. With just 19 rooms and suites and a four-bedroom villa, the resort allows guests an unrivaled, intimate experience. Tell us about your education.

After finishing high school, I went to university where I got my master degree in auditing and management control and at the same time I was working as a model. After graduation, I started working professionally in modelling and did an acting course in which I got a diploma in film acting.

then learning the script, checking what costumes and makeup, hair is going to be like so it brings me close to the character’s life, and then comes many steps that are private for each actor, I already told you a lot (lol).

Do you have any tricks or routines to stay healthy and beautiful?

How did you get interested in the field of modelling Thank you for the compliment. To stay healthy, I try to eat some greens and avoid sugar and too much carbs, drink lots and acting? Who or what inspired you? I was always fascinated by models in fashion magazines and movie stars like Audrey Hepburn, Monica Bellucci, Julia Roberts.

of water that comes naturally to me as I am always thirsty.

The first one that came was modelling, I was spotted by Fati Boujiki, a Moroccan fashion designer in a shopping mall and got my first cover shoot with a Moroccan magazine that she introduced me to, in which I wore her new collection. I can’t choose between the three, I enjoy doing all of them, as each one makes me discover something new either it is new trend with modelling, new stories and characters with acting and new places and information with TV presenting.

their history or their present.

What kind of roles do you like or would like to play and why?

You are a model, actor, and a TV presenter. What I have a long list of characters but to sum it up, be part of came first and which one is you favourite and why? stories that tell about Moroccan and Arab women, either What did you learn from your biggest failure?

To never give up and keep going while taking care of my health.

Tell us about some of your best modelling projects.

It was definitely my first magazine cover and my first job as a model when I went to India.

Tell us a little about your acting career. What were some of your best acting projects?

My best project in acting was my role in “Tiger Zinda Hai”. It was my first role in a movie and I was very excited to act along with such good and famous actors like Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan from the Bollywood.

Are you currently working on any new acting projects?

I have actually just finished filming an exciting Moroccan film. I’m taking a little break now before heading to a beauty contest in Italy: Miss Europe Continental in which I am participating in their world edition.

The most important thing when you are shooting is? To know my lines perfectly and to be wearing clothes and shoes that I am comfortable in.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Perseverant, adventurous, and dreamy.

What is the best and worst part of being an actress?

The best part of being an actress is having to live many lives in one and to experience many emotions and the worst part is the waiting part but I beat it with either having nice chat with the make up, hair and costumes department or revising my lines.

How do you prepare for a role?

The most important part for me is understanding the director and writer’s vision and how they see the character, www.cpmagazine.net

FormerlyMe.com presents “On The Go: Las Vegas”

WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

Jim West

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “On The Go: Las Vegas” days of my journey. 22

APRIL 2022

Viva Las Vegas! Lights, sounds, and something for everyone awaits you here. On my last few trips here I decided to rent a car and get out of Las Vegas and explore some sights off the strip. Far off. I drove to the Grand Canyon's West Rim to take a walk on Skywalk.

The Skywalk sits just over the edge off at 4770 ft (1450m) above sea level. No phones are allowed out on the platform for obvious safety reasons. The Grand Canyon is such an awe inspiring sight that videos and pictures simply do not do it justice to how big it is.

After spending a day taking in the sights it was time to make the drive back to the Vegas strip. I recommend getting there earlier in the day so you have the park to yourself before the big tour buses arrive. I had lots of time to self-reflect and just allow myself to become one with nature. I started to recognize that the real memories to be made are just outside the front door.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021-2022. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial www.cpmagazine.net

I’ve believed in the power of expression through visuals and words, and today I’m filled with great enthusiasm and determination to make my artistic talent of use to others” Recently, Maya Hamad has successfully released two NFT art collections, “Modern Compositions” and “Faces of Earth” to support blakINwite Digital Magazine’s mission to make an impact on the female community by supporting womenowned businesses and talents from around the world. Her latest NFT art collection, named “Forgotten Dogs”, has been released on behalf of Paws & Fashion online store, in addition to “This T-shirt Saves Dogs” initiative, and is solely dedicated to helping the FDF further fulfill their mission by donating 50% of the funds raised from this collection towards the foundation. Anthony Hudson, founder of the Forgotten Dogs Foundation, says, “At the FDF, we plan to fulfill our mission by using all monies raised and donated to find homes for orphaned dogs in overpopulated shelters, and to improve their overall welfare. We do this by working with those who are dedicated to saving dogs, and we couldn’t be more enthusiastic about this new partnership.” The collection consists of a total of 13 cards, each of which holds the letter from the words ‘Forgotten Dogs’, and a digital drawing of different dog breeds that portray the diversity of dog breeds around the world who need the help of humans.

More recently, since 2014, NFTs (or Non-Fungible Tokens) have been one of the most valuable crypto assets to invest in, and the numbers have shown remarkable results. According to nonfungible.com, the boost in NFT sales began in 2017, starting at 100 NFT sales per week to an average of 15,000 per week. Towards the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020, NFT sales skyrocketed between 30,000 to 80,000 per week. The first half of 2021 showed a whopping $2.5 billion worth of NFT sales. NFT creators trade their NFT assets for as low as a few hundred dollars, up to a few million dollars. In 2021, the most expensive NFT sold went for $69 million dollars, an art piece named “Everydays: the First 5000 Days” created by NFT artist, Beeple. With these outstanding NFT market results, entrepreneur and NFT artist, Maya Hamad, and Forgotten Dogs Foundation (FDF), a dog charity aimed at ending the mistreatment and killing of dogs in overpopulated dog shelters, joined forces with the shared goal to use NFT trading to donate to the FDF for dogs in need. Maya Hamad says, “I believe that something of such great value should be used for the greater good, besides achieving financial success through such investments of course. There are thousands of courses, charities, and projects that could use a percentage of profits made from these digital assets to make positive impacts globally. For years,

THE ART OF (DE) CONSTRUCTION 28

APRIL 2022

“Collage and painting, both analog and digital, are my tools to have peace and happiness" José Berrocoso

Derived from the French verb coller, meaning “to glue”, collage (pronounced ko•laje) is a work of art made by fluing things to the surface. It is similar to découpage, a 17th-century French practice of decorating furniture with pictures. Designers are using this artistic technique to creat campaigns, fashion lookbooks and more. Our lifestyle editor, José Berrocoso, dives into the world of collage. He chats with Aguilar Carüncho to learn more about this trendy tecnhique in the fashion industry. Aguilar Carüncho was born in Madrid, Spain, collage artist, illustrator, she creates in a variety of techniques, from analog collage to digital illustration, from motion collages to mixed media graphics. Aguilar Carüncho’s work are dreamlike and thought-provoking, she experiments with surreal figurative imagery, finding inspiration in fashion aesthetics, street culture and turn-of-the-century cinema narratives. The visual language of the Spanish artists is defined by combining different materials and textures, mostly in monochrome. Multi-layered, fragmented imagery of her collages reflects the artist’s vision of human reality. She works with fashion, luxury and lifestyle brands and professionals from all over the world. www.cpmagazine.net

29

CityPages Magazine: For those who aren’t familiar with collage artwork, can you give our readers a brief explanation of what constitutes a collage? Aguilar Carüncho: Without it being the main objective, it is about reusing remnants of both paper and other textures and giving them a new shape. Collage work is also ecological ART. CPM: How did you start making art? AC: 4 years ago, I was painting an old table, and I found it really gratefull so I started with hand made work.

CPM: How do you discuss the aesthetic though manipulating reality and illusion? AC: IT'S LIKE MAGIC, from where you don't think there's anything left, a world appears

CPM: How do you successfully express this intention? AC: There is no specific intention, I simply flow, whether it is a request with a briefin or there is not.

CPM: Please tell us about your technique. Your collages have a great number of elements in them but at the same time they seem very holistic, homogenous. AG: I did not look for the technique, but the technique found me. Like a boyfriend or a good suit, you have to go forward until you find what suits you. CPM: In your artworks there are various influences, both Japanese and European. What are your inspirations? What are your favorite artists and what do you like in them the most? AC: In my family there are artists, from a well-known painter to the best landscaper in the world, to what is now known as a fashion and decoration stylist, and all of that goes in my DNA. Besides, I pay a lot of attention to DADAISM, Hoch, Braque and today Instagram, where it is very easy to reach great artists

CPM: Are there any stories you try to convey in your collages or do you prefer the viewer to have his own interpretation? AC: When everything is calm I look for aesthetics but in complicated moments such as conflicts, important anniversaries I try to communicate and shed light through my collages. CPM: Apart from collage art, you design postcards, zins, artbooks and mail-art as well. Please tell us about this. AC: It is important how things are told, the chosen aesthetic helps to capture more attention, I like to readapt my creations to all kinds of supports. CPM: In your opinion, what makes a good collage composition? AC: As in almost everything, freshness even before technique. Freshness is not taught, you have it or you don't have it.

30

CPM: What are your further artistic plans and dreams? AC: Time, to be with my scissors, my magazines and good music in the background. And of course that people are moved by what I do. APRIL 2022

DON’T SCRAP THAT VEGETABLE! Athari Abdulaziz Almutawa

A large amount of food is wasted in Kuwait, for no reason other than it being something we are accustomed to. With the average Kuwaiti household generating 1.55 large bags and 2.46 small bags of solid waste per day, which is around 8.39 kg of solid waste per day, household food stuffs make up 51.1% of that (Koushki & Al-Khaleefi, 1998). This is roughly twice as much garbage per person than a person living in western Europe or Japan would generate. and it is substantially increasing every year (Koushki & AlKhaleefi, 1998). We can actually reduce our waste by utilizing our fruits and veggies from top to tail. These scraps can add interesting textures, flavors and visual aesthetics that may be a revelation to our taste buds and enhance our everyday meal experience. As well as being highly nutritive, rich in protein, minerals and vitamins. 38

Basil flowers are a great addition to salad or fruit salad, you can even make basil salt. They give off that delicate floral touch to any dish. While having a much more subtle fragrant basil flavor.

Celery tops

The leafy celery tops have a surprisingly much crisper, stronger flavor than the stalks. They can be a wonderful addition to soups, stocks, or even salads adding a light fresh taste.

Sweet potato leaves

Carrot tops

The feather-like green carrot tops are a great substitute to parsley, it has an earthy, mild flavor of carrots. They can be a great addition to salsa, soups and salads.

Zucchini flowers, juvenile leaves and seeds

Zucchini flowers in most parts of the world are just tossed aside but in the southern Italy, in the regions of Campania and Calabria, they stuff and fry them up into a beautiful delicacy called “Sciurilli or Frittelle di Ciurilli", brownie points if you can pronounce it in the dialect! As for zucchini, seeds have a similar flavor profile to peanuts and taste beautiful when roasted. While, juvenile zucchini leaves are best boiled first than strained and sautéed or can be a great addition to curries, soups or even risotto.

Broccoli stalks, leaves and flower stems

Just peel the stalks then boil ,roast or stir-fry them. Whereas, the leaves have a milder flavor

Cauliflower leaves and stems

The stems have a milder and sweeter flavor than the florets, and might be a little tough so peel before using. They can be a great addition to salads or flavorful stocks or soups. As for the leaves, the flavor can be best described as that of crispy seaweed. They can be a substitute to kale, chard or spinach, so toss them into a salad, sauté them or even roast them for that extra crunch.

If you have ever noticed in Kuwait sweet potato plants are used in gardens and urban green spaces. The leaves and stalks are edible, the flavor profile is a milder punch than the sweet potato plant to the point one can even describe it as being similar to spinach.

Cilantro roots and stems

Their flavor is peppery and aromatic, and are much milder than the leaves. You can chop them up or mince them. It is quite a common ingredient in Southeast Asian cuisine and the Thai kitchen. It is used in dishes such as hot and sour shrimp soup (tom yam kung) and green and red curry paste.

Citrus peels

From lemon, lime, orange and mandarin, save them up, use them dry or fresh to infuse your water or tea or to create a sweet treat by candying them.

Sprouted onion and garlic

Newly sprouted onion shoots are milder and sweeter, while garlic shoots are bitter and pack a stronger flavor. They can be a great addition to salads, stir-fries and just plain old sautéed.

Watermelon rind and seeds

Watermelon rind can be added to your water to give you a hint of watermelon, made into a jam and even in a natural body scrub with addition of few other ingredients. As for the seeds, if you love gardening, you can air dry them and grow some more watermelon or toast them in the oven to munch on.

Beet tops

Are a great substitute for chard and spinach. They have an earthy flavor with a slight bitter taste that can be cut using some lemon juice. S‫ ‏‬autéed they can be a great addition to salads, or mixed in rice and pasta dishes.

“I think I am more like a minimalist person, I like things that are quiet, pure and graphic but sensual and organic at the same time. I like to push a little bit the boundary, both in life and work, and that´s what identifies me" Ana Roquero, CEO & Designer of Cookplay

APRIL 2022

CityPages Magazine: Your work has caught quite a lot of attention off and online. Could you tell us more about your story and how you got to the place where you are now? Ana Roquero: My intention in creating Cookplay was to break the limits of the traditional table by proposing collections of utensils that challenged the established through a very relevant design, a good quality and a very powerful communication that will intensify the perceived value of our brand. Our success is the success of the image we have transmitted of innovation, freshness and good work. Values that are the authentic value of our product and so we have come to places that sought our values of change and regeneration at the table. CPM: What lead you into working with ceramics? Are you self-taught or have you learned it from someone else? AR: I am not a ceramist; I am an industrial designer and my goal as a professional is practice of the design. As the new habits are intuited, the use of the most suitable materials and ecological, the industrialization of a serial product so that it can reach the market to a reasonable price. I work with pencil, paper, computers and 3D printers. CPM: How would you define the style of your work and how did it develop? AR: I think I,m more like a minimalist person, I like things that are quiet, pure and graphic but sensual and powerful, and a little bit pushing the boundaries , both in live and work.

CPM: Which materials fascinate you the most except for clay? Are there any that you have not worked with but would like to try out? AR: Materials and their finishes are one of the basic tools of a designer. The ones that fascinate me the most are the most natural in their genuine texture and color, the matte stones and the untreated woods, so in my porcelain collections I have used the biscuit, without enameling, to be able to appreciate its texture and touch in a more sensual way. The most ecological material in my disposable tableware is the sugar cane pulp, totally biodegradable and with a fabulous surface appearance both for eating and for touch. I am convinced that in the coming years we will see new bios materials that will give us new perspectives for new uses in the world of household goods. CPM: What is the most important aspect for you when you are designing a plate? AR: Each collection corresponds to a specific function that I defined previously and that responds to a new need in the kitchenware, for example, how to eat standing catering, or how to eat sharing at a table, or how to shape the dishes of essential meals or the small formats of fusion food... in the last collections the functions are more emotional and I have been carried away by shaping the feelings "form follows feelings". In all of them I always like to study how we relate to objects, how we take, serve and eat with them, I really like to analyze the emotional connections that are around a table and the new proposals to set a table breaking the established. CPM: How do you put together a collection and what influences you? AR: The different pieces of the collection are part of the set of creative drawings, each volume corresponds to a more or less deep dish, more or less large, they are still part of the free exercise of that most creative part. At a more advanced stage, I take into account the capacity of each piece and if it fulfills its www.cpmagazine.net

45

function according to the range, but until this point I like to break the established and I always propose bold formats that also help you to be more creative in your recipes, for example, the Jomon collection with the concave bowl that does not have any straight plane to lean on the table creating a dynamic on the table that helps to share. CPM: You’ve collaborated with so many great chefs worldwide. What is it about this process that you enjoy? AR: Indeed, many great chefs have liked my collections, they find in my pieces the ideal volume for the creations of their dishes, it coincides that they see in them the place to plate their creations. I don't design my collections for any of them in particular, but they end up finding in them that emotion they want to express in their meals. We both seek the same result, innovate and offer sensitivity at the table.

CPM: How would you describe the creative scene in terms of sustainability and how does it impact your own work? Let us know about your recently launched Chikio Collection. AR: From the beginning of Cookplay my great goal was to work with sustainable materials, porcelain is the ideal material for gastronomic collections because it is the most durable and sugarcane pulp is the most suitable 100% biodegradable material for disposable utensils, which day by day is becoming a majority trend, not only in catering, but in Delivery and Takeaway and community food, where we have to stop using plastic and replace it with ecological materials. Our Chikio collections also offer a refined and innovative design in sugar cane to raise the level of image and quality when eating in disposable pieces.

CPM: You have achieved wonderful international awards including Red Dot Design Award for Jomon Collection in 2014, Best in the Show at Maison & Objet Paris and Finalist ELLE Decor Internation Design Award in 2015, Best in The Show in Las Vegas Market Fair in 2017... Do you have a dream project that you would love to realize someday? AR: Indeed we have had awards for design, the hospitality sector and the company that make me and my team feel very proud, also the commercial successes such as being in The Peninsula of Hong Kong, the Burj el Arab in Dubai, Guggenheim in Bilbao, Selfridges in London, La Rinascente in Milan, BHV Marais in Paris, ... they have been very important in our trajectory and we consider them vital to grow. Personally I would like, as a designer, to have a piece in the Design Store of MoMA in New York.

CPM: How do you see the culinary scene in the Middle East? Are your products available in the GCC? AR: Since our beginnings in 2014 our products have seduced numerous gastronomic concepts such as Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Emirates Palace (Abu Dhabi), W Hotel The Palm, Vida Hills Hotel Dubai, FIFA World Cup Qatar and in Kuwait we work with chefs such as Ahmad Al Bader, Adlah Alsharahn, Khaled Al Baker, Ahmad AlZamel and shops for example.

lawfullondon

Founder of Lawful London Born and raised in Birmingham, Saher Bhatti studied Economics and Politics at University of Birmingham and left Birmingham aged 22 to attend law school and trained as a lawyer in London. Saher's love for minimalist, timeless accessories led her to recognise the lack of contemporary, cruelty-free, practical bags for women that were suitably versatile for commuting, work and weekend needs.

Lawful London was born out of her desire to create a brand that aimed to make better bags in a better way, by producing affordable products that were ethical, functional and timeless. CP magazine sits with Saher this month for this exclusive interview to know more about her brand and plans for expansion. 48

Please introduce yourself.

I am Saher Bhatti, an ex-city lawyer born and raised in UK. I have recently set up my first business venture, the contemporary, minimalist women’s accessories brand Lawful London which is now available globally including in UK, Europe, Middle East and USA.

Tell us about your education.

The majority of my school life was spent in Birmingham, UK at an all-girls grammar school where I completed my GCSEs and A-Levels. I then attended University of Birmingham and studied Economics and Politics as an undergraduate. After graduating with a first-class honours in my undergraduate degree, I then spent two years at law school in London ahead of training as a solicitor.

What or who inspired you to learn law?

I have always been interested in a career in law and since my early teens, I attended events run by local law firms which were aimed at young students who were potentially interested in exploring law as a career. The events ranged from spending a day at a law firm (‘a day in the life of a lawyer’ style event) to a full week work experience with different firms. This gave me a good idea of the range of work and clients which I would potentially be involved with and the culture of different types of firms. This experience at a young age inspired me to pursue law as a career.

How did the idea of launching your own handbags come up?

50

The idea arose when I was working in London and commuting, whilst carrying my laptop, folders, shoes and more! I struggled to find a minimalist, functional work bag that was thoughtfully designed and available at an affordable price point. I either discovered bags which were fashionable but lacked functionality or if they were functional, they were either in the form of a clunky backpack or highly overpriced – this led me to explore the idea of creating an accessories brand which was fashionable, functional, ethically produced and affordable! APRIL 2022

Did you work with any designers to convert your ideas to proper designs?

Yes, I worked with an experienced designer who has previously worked with leading brands such as House of Fraser and Ted Baker.

When did you officially launch and how did you select the name for your brand?

Lawful London was officially launched in September 2019. The name of the brand links to the lawful, ethical nature of the products with all pieces being made from cruelty-free fabrics (vegan leather). It also relates to my past as a London lawyer which is where the idea transpired.

What materials do you use for your handbags?

The Classic Collection is made from Polyurethane. The

new range ‘The Three Collection,’ which is due to be launched in June 2022 is made from microfibre.

How did the creative process evolve since you started the brand?

The creative process has evolved incrementally since the brand was born. It’s important for us to see what has worked well and why whilst also identifying what hasn’t worked so well (with respect to product and marketing) and amend this moving forward. We’re also adapting the image of the brand now we know who exactly our customer is (her age, demographic, hobbies etc.), to ensure the brand, marketing and content consistently resonates with her. This also impacts our choice of models for campaigns and the content creators that we choose to work with for social media purposes.

Who is your main target for your brand?

Lawful London’s main target are females, aged 24-35. They are likely to be university students, graduates, working women and in some cases working mothers.

Describe your first collection - The Classic Collection.

The Classic Collection offers a range of timeless

designs, with all pieces having a minimal, non-seasonal aesthetic. The Dahlia backpack, Sienna tote and Aspen tote are all equipped with full internal functionality in the form of a padded laptop compartment, wide slip pockets for documents and notepads, bottle holders, card holders and zip compartments for additional security. All pieces in the Classic Collection are designed for women who want a practical, timeless durable accessory that’s versatile for both their work and weekend wardrobes.

How was it like being pregnant during the pandemic? What difficulties did you face?

Being pregnant during the pandemic was a very surreal experience. As it was my first pregnancy, I didn’t have anything to compare it to, but it did feel very lonely at times. Fortunately, I had a fairly smooth pregnancy so I didn’t really face any major difficulties until after I had my baby, however raising a newborn during a lockdown is so challenging! As a new mother, you’re going through such a transitional point in your life (mentally, physically, hormonally!) that a bit of normality is necessary - whether that be going for a coffee with a friend or popping to your local mall with your baby, it’s so essential to maintain a balance and actually not having the ability to do that, amplified the difficulties of being in a lockdown for me as a new parent, which at times made me feel isolated and claustrophobic.

How are you managing your time now being a mother and an entrepreneur?

I’m still trying to master the art of juggling, but I’ve learnt that multi-tasking is key for any working mum. I try to fit work in as and when I can (when my baby naps) or often during the evenings after bath and bedtime! I focus on maximising my work time when my baby is in nursery to ensure that they’re the most productive days of the week and all the important bits are dealt with then whilst I have a clear(er) mind.

What challenges and problems did you face for your business during the pandemic and how did you manage to expand in the UAE?

The main challenge was receiving shipments on time. Stock was delayed for weeks, sometimes months or incredibly expensive due to hiked shipping costs from the backlog caused by the start of the pandemic/global lockdowns. However, the pandemic generally seemed to provide a lot of opportunities for my brand (which may be the case for many e-commerce brands) as online traffic massively increased due to malls and stores being closed. As an exclusively online brand, the website saw an increase in visits and therefore conversions, so in terms of revenue and acquiring new customers, the pandemic was actually a thriving time for us.

The decision to expand to the UAE was taken in November 2021 when the pandemic chaos had largely calmed down – manufacturing was back to normal, albeit more expensive, and shipping times were back to pre-pandemic days so it felt like the perfect time to expand into a new region where stock could be delivered and fulfilled relatively quickly and efficiently without disruption.

What are the most important lessons you learnt during your journey from lawyer to an entrepreneur? The two most important lessons I learnt during the

transitional journey from lawyer to entrepreneur were:

1.Stay focussed: It’s hard going from a structured job to an unstructured, creative setting where you’re working for yourself and setting your own deadlines. Find a way to stay organised from the beginning so you build some sort of structure for your days to maximise productivity and also hold yourself accountable. 2.Trust in your vision: It’s hard leaving something you know and going into the unknown but always remain focussed on your wider vision and outcome and trust your instinct. It’s very easy to get derailed by comments and feedback from others particularly when you’re at the start of your business venture so sometimes keeping your business or idea private while you work on it silently may help keep you focussed on your vision.

What other markets are you planning to expand to?

Far East and USA - whilst we currently ship to USA, we do not have local fulfilment providers which we will be looking to set up in the next 12 months to service this region more efficiently.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on the launch of the new range, ‘The Three Collection’. There’s so much to do ahead of the launch in June 2022, including launching the new marketing campaign, creating fresh social media content, refreshing the website for the new collection, and planning a launch event for the new collection in UAE for all our incredible and supportive customers in the region!

What are some of your other hobbies?

Fitness, cooking, reading (I love ‘Shoe Dog’ by Phil Knight and ‘Build Something That Matters’ by Blake Mycoskie)

How did you manage to scale Lawful London to a 6-figure business?

I have taken very calculated and conservative decisions which involved only spending on things the business either really needed or that I saw the value in for my brand during its infancy. I also continually evaluated what was working well and not so well for the brand to avoid being wasteful. In doing so, I kept the product line and marketing approach very lean until I could see substantial market validation in the form of conversions to justify either larger stock purchases, a new collection, greater marketing spend or expansion into other geos etc. Ultimately, keeping the product range, operations and marketing approach as lean as possible to focus only what’s delivering for the business and doubling down on this, allowed us to scale to six figure revenue without external investment in a relatively short period of time from just a single small collection of products.

How can our readers and women from Kuwait buy your handbags?

All products are available to purchase from our Middle East website which also offers free shipping to Kuwait: lawfullondon.ae

4 HAIR TIPS to Make Thin Hair Look Thicker with Rossano Ferretti Products

Fine hair can be beautiful in its own way, but many of us tend to want to plump up our locks for a more voluminous energised look. If this is you – then there is nothing like easy professional tips on how to make your hair look thicker and advice from the celebrity hairdresser and hair maestro, Rossano Ferretti. Here are some tips to pump up the volume, add texture and “oomph” to your locks for those days when you’re feeling a little more adventurous – using Rossano Ferretti’s Grandioso Volumising Range. 1-Choose the Right Haircare Products

The first step into achieving that voluminous look is choosing the right product range. Thus, it’s important to include a volumising shampoo and conditioner into your haircare routine to give your hair a full-bodied look. Try the Grandioso Extra Volume Shampoo (AED 175) and Grandiosoe Extra Volume Conditioner (AED 192) from the Rossano Ferretti range for the best results. Enriched with natural, nourishing ingredients, these formulas work to fortify hair while adding body and natural movement.

2- Use a Volumising Spray

54

A quality volumising spray can add instant “bounce” to your hair, especially if you apply it to wet locks before styling. Rossano Ferretti’s Grandioso Volumising Spray (AED 192) is the perfect styling product to help you achieve a larger than life hair, with its weightless formula that draws inspiration from Umbria, the green and lush heart of Italy. The formula has been professionally designed to give fine, thin, and short hair a natural volume boost while lifting roots for extra movement.

APRIL 2022

3- A Great Haircut Can Make All the Difference

It’s true. One of the easiest ways to make thin hair look thicker is to trim your hair regularly to keep the ends healthy and strong – in turn resulting in wellconditioned and thicker hair growth. A professional hair stylist will be able to cut, colour and style your hair in a way to accentuate your best features and get the most from your hair type and texture.

4- Change Your Parting

If you have always worn your hair to one side, try parting your hair differently for an instant lift. Because your locks eventually get used to the same parting, they fall flat over time. In order to maintain volume at the roots, we suggest that you switch up your hair’s parting and secure it in place with a holding hairspray.

The Rossano Ferretti hair care range offers a solution to all haircare needs and guarantees exceptional results. The extensive product range helps hair become healthier, stronger, softer and overall, naturally more beautiful.

LAUNCH OF THE BIOCERAMIC MOONSWATCH OMEGA has collaborated with Swatch to produce a playful take on its iconic Speedmaster chronograph

The design partnership, a first for OMEGA and Swatch, follows the popular trend of collaborations between luxury and street brands to create innovative new products that blend the best of both worlds. For OMEGA, the joint mission is both a fun undertaking and a respectful nod to the plucky company that risked it all to kick-start the ailing Swiss watch industry during the quartz revolution.

The brands have drawn their design inspiration from space, to create a collection of eleven Swatches named after planetary bodies, from the giant star at the centre of the solar system to the dwarf planet at its periphery. All of the Swatches are in BIOCERAMIC, a unique mix of twothirds ceramic and one-third material derived from castor oil. Although colours like pink and pale blue offer strong clues that these are not your standard Speedmaster watches, a hard-core Moonwatch fan would be hard-pushed to find the difference in the overall look. The key Moonwatch design features are all there. The asymmetrical case, the famous tachymeter scale with dot over ninety and the distinctive Speedmaster subdials, which all work perfectly. For OMEGA President and CEO Mr. Raynald Aeschlimann, the new collection is a source of pride. “OMEGA’s long and distinguished history may have been cut short if it wasn’t for the vision and the courage taken by Swatch. The MoonSwatch collection salutes the saviours of our industry in a witty and accessible way. The Swatches are perfect for budding Moonwatch fans and I can’t think of a more appropriate icon for our shared project. We went to the moon, now we’re exploring the whole Milky Way. They’re great watches, in fantastic colours and they make me smile.”

64

The new collection, in rarely seen colours, is all about giving OMEGA’s professional timepiece a playful twist. Each MoonSwatch features its own mission statement, inspirational engravings and joint OMEGA X SWATCH logos

The technology leverages Deep Neural Network algorithms, which takes thousands of hours of speech and non-speech audio signal data sets for model training. Its audio signal data sets cover typical human voices and nearly a hundred common working environment noises in order to allow the AI model to learn the characteristics of speech and non-speech sound signals. The AI Personal Voice Enhancement technology also adopts Deep Neural Network algorithms. Its principle is to allow the AI model to continuously learn, identify, and extract the voiceprint characteristic of the speaker and because people’s voices sound different at different time of the day and some people have similar voiceprint characteristic.

NEW APRIL RELEASES

The Odyssey by Lara Williams

Ingrid works on a gargantuan luxury cruise liner where she spends her days reorganizing the gift shop shelves and waiting for long-term guests to drop dead in the aisles. On her days off, she disembarks from the ship, wasting the hours aimlessly following tourists around, drinking the local alcohol, and buying clothes she never intends to wear again. It's not a bad life. At least, it distracts her from thinking about the other life--the other person--she left behind five years ago. That is, until the day she is selected by the ship's enigmatic captain and (ill-informed) wabi sabi devotee, Keith, for his mentorship program. Encouraging her to reflect on past mistakes and her desperation to remain lost at sea, Keith pushes Ingrid further than she ever thought possible. But as her friendships and professional life onboard steadily fall apart, Ingrid must ask herself: how do you know when you have gone too far? Utterly original, mischievous, and thought-provoking, The Odyssey is a merciless takedown of consumer capitalism and our anxious, ill-fated quests to find something to believe in. It's a voyage that will lead our heroine all the way home, though she will do almost anything to avoid getting there.

Unlikely Animals by Annie Hartnett

Natural-born healer Emma Starling once had big plans for her life, but she's lost her way. A med school dropout, she's come back to small-town Everton, New Hampshire to care for her father, dying from a mysterious brain disease. Clive Starling has been hallucinating small animals, as well as visions of the ghost of a long-dead naturalist, Ernest Harold Baynes, once known for letting wild animals live in his house. This ghost has been giving Clive some ideas on how to spend his final days. Emma arrives home knowing she must face her dad's illness, her mom's judgement, and her younger brother's recent stint in rehab, but she's unprepared to find that her former best friend from high school is missing, with no one bothering to look for her. The police say they don't spend much time looking for drug addicts. Emma's dad is the only one convinced the young woman might still be alive, and Emma is hopeful he could be right. Someone should look for her, at least. Emma isn't really trying to be a hero--but somehow she and her father set in motion just the kind of miracle the town needs. Set against the backdrop of a small town in the throes of a very real opioid crisis, Unlikely Animals is a tragicomic novel about familial expectations, imperfect friendships, and the possibility of resurrecting that which had been thought irrevocably lost.

Hello, Molly!

Persians: The Age of the Great Kings

by Molly Shannon, Sean Wilsey

by Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones

by Claire McGowan

At age four, Molly Shannon's world was shattered when she lost her mother, baby sister, and cousin in a car accident with her father at the wheel. Held together by her tender and complicated relationship with her grieving father, Molly was raised in a permissive household where her gift for improvising and roleplaying blossomed alongside the fearlessness that would lead her to become a celebrated actress. From there, Molly ventured into the wider world of New York and Los Angeles show business, where she created her own opportunities and developed her daring and empathetic comedy. Filled with behind-the-scenes stories involving everyone from Whitney Houston to Adam Sandler to Monica Lewinsky, many told for the first time here, Hello, Molly! spans Molly's time on Saturday Night Live--where she starred alongside Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Cheri Oteri, Tracy Morgan, and Jimmy Fallon, among many others. At the same time, it explores with humor and candor her struggle to come to terms with the legacy of her father, a man who both fostered her gifts and drive and was left with the impossible task of raising his kids alone after the loss of her mother.

The Achaemenid Persian kings ruled over the largest empire of antiquity, stretching from Libya to the steppes of Asia and from Ethiopia to Pakistan. From the palace-city of Persepolis, Cyrus the Great, Darius, Xerxes, and their heirs reigned supreme for centuries until the conquests of Alexander of Macedon brought the empire to a swift and unexpected end in the late 330s BCE. In Persians, historian Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones tells the epic story of this dynasty and the world it ruled. Drawing on Iranian inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, art, and archaeology, he shows how the Achaemenid Persian Empire was the world’s first superpower—one built, despite its imperial ambition, on cooperation and tolerance. This is the definitive history of the Achaemenid dynasty and its legacies in modern-day Iran, a book that completely reshapes our understanding of the ancient world.

Ireland in the 1990s seemed a safe place for women. With the news dominated by the Troubles, it was easy to ignore nonpolitical murders and sexual violence, to trust that you weren’t going to be dragged into the shadows and killed. But beneath the surface, a far darker reality had taken hold. In this candid investigation into the society and circumstances that allowed eight young women to vanish without a trace—no conclusion or conviction, no resolution for their loved ones— bestselling crime novelist Claire McGowan delivers a righteous polemic against the culture of secrecy, victim-blaming and shame that left these women’s bodies unfound, their fates unknown, their assailants unpunished. McGowan reveals an Ireland not of leprechauns and craic but of outdated social and sexual mores, where women and their bodies were of secondary importance to perceived propriety and misguided politics—a place of well-buttoned lips and stony silence, inadequate police and paramilitary threat. Was an unknown serial killer at large or was there something even more insidious at work? In this insightful, sensitively drawn account, McGowan exposes a system that failed these eight women—and continues to fail women to this day.

Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of

Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold

The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures: A True Tale of Obsession, Murder,

by Danyel Smith

by Paul Holes

Black Women in Pop

American pop music is arguably this country’s greatest cultural contribution to the world, and its singular voice and virtuosity were created by a shining thread of Black women geniuses stretching back to the country’s founding. This is their surprising, heartbreaking, soaring story—written by one of the preeminent cultural critics of her generation. A weave of biography, criticism, and memoir, Shine Bright is Danyel Smith’s intimate history of Black women’s music as the foundational story of American pop. Smith has been writing this history for more than five years. But as a music fan, and then as an essayist, editor (Vibe, Billboard), and podcast host (Black Girl Songbook), she has been living this history since she was a latchkey kid listening to “Midnight Train to Georgia” on the family stereo. Smith’s detailed narrative begins with Phillis Wheatley, an enslaved woman who sang her poems, and continues through the stories of Mahalia Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Mariah Carey, as well as the underconsidered careers of Marilyn McCoo, Deniece Williams, and Jody Watley.

Cases

From the detective who found The Golden State Killer, a memoir of investigating America’s toughest cold cases and the rewards-and toll--of a life solving crime. I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime-solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me, for better or worse, to the point of obsession. People always ask how I am able to detach from the horrors of my work. Part of it is an innate capacity to compartmentalize; the rest is experience and exposure, and I’ve had plenty of both. But I had always taken pride in the fact that I can keep my feelings locked up to get the job done. It’s only been recently that it feels like all that suppressed darkness is beginning to seep out.

The Vanishing Triangle

and the Movies

by Paul Fischer

The year is 1888 and Louis Le Prince is finally testing his “taker” or “receiver” device for his family on their front lawn. The device is meant to capture ten to twelve images per second on film, creating a reproduction of reality that can be replayed as many times as desired. In an otherwise separate and detached world, occurrences from one end of the globe could now be viewable with only a few days delay on the other side of the world. No human experience—from the most mundane to the most momentous—would need to be lost to history. In 1890, Le Prince was granted patents in four countries ahead of other inventors who were rushing to accomplish the same task. But just weeks before unveiling his invention to the world, he mysteriously disappeared and was never seen or heard from again. Three and a half years later, Thomas Edison, Le Prince’s rival, made the device public, claiming to have invented it himself. And the man who had dedicated his life to preserving memories was himself lost to history—until now. The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures pulls back the curtain and reveals the riveting story of both Louis Le Prince’s life and work, dispelling the secrets that shroud each. This captivating, impeccably researched work presents the never before told history of the motion picture and sheds light on the unsolved mystery of Le Prince’s disappearance.

THE BATMAN Directed by Matt Reeves Written by Matt Reeves and Peter Craig

Batman has been one of the largest media franchises in DC Comics history. Akin to the hype over the actor to don the tuxedo for James Bond, the list of actors to wear the cape and cowl is quite impressive. Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and now Robert Pattinson. Best known for the Twilight series, Robert has typically been cast in roles that make use of his stoic presence on camera. Perfect for a dark and gritty Batman film. Fans have long waited for a Batman that hearkens back to it’s detective comics roots as Batman being a great detective. This film brushes along those ideas, but I feel they missed a huge opportunity to generate repeat viewings. I hope to that point I find out I am wrong and would welcome something more ‘meta’ from these writers.

Here comes the spoilers.

Right off the bat we are thrown into a creepy voyeur watching a family through their windows. We then see it is the city mayors home. The serial killer calling himself The Riddler (Paul Dano) brutally murders the mayor and starts off a series of messages and clues for Batman to solve. The Riddler continues to kill people associated with a cover-up crime from years ago that involve the Wayne family. Bruce Wayne (Pattinson) with help from his loyal butler, Alfred (Andy Serkis), work tirelessly to decipher the clues and crack the riddles left behind. Batman crosses paths with Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz) aka Catwoman whose roommate is missing due to a connection to the mayor. They team up to gather information, but soon butt heads over her relationship to Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). Batman chases down some leads to Penguin (Colin Farrell), but finds out he was wrong and the main person he is

supposed to track down is Falcone. Bruce discovers a family secret that resulted in the murder of a reporter that was covered up, and following events led to the murder of his parents. Here is where I think we needed more emotion from Pattinson and perhaps show some madness under the guise of control for this character. Two years of fighting crime in what is played as a crusade by himself, you begin to wonder where is Bruce Wayne among this nearly three hour runtime? Sure he makes an appearance during a public memorial service for the Mayor, but that is it. Previous Batman films always try to balance out the duality of the man and the mask. I think this film needed to show more of the man and not the mask. Best scene is when Batman is facing The Riddler at Arkham and he thinks The Riddler know he is Bruce Wayne. That was written perfectly. When he comes to realize the Riddler doesn’t know is perfect. Otherwise the film has some nice brutal fight sequences and the darkness doesn’t distract too much from the action. A small issue I take is when you see Pattinson shirtless you see wounds and scars. What you don’t see is muscles. Did the suit augment his strength? Again some missed background details to help suspend the disbelief a bit better. Some flashbacks to his training, his two years of fighting crime in Gotham, and events that drove him to who he is at the point of this film would help tremendously to connect to him as a character. Now the biggest issue I have with a film about riddles and clue would be why not insert some hidden messages for eagle-eyed fans. Messages like Easter eggs for upcoming DC films and references to other characters. Things that would significantly raise the repeat viewing factor to catch all these clues. Turn the audience into detectives themselves would be a superb meta move by the writers. I hope I am wrong and they did indeed do such a thing. Regardless this film will be praised as a smashing success and hopefully we get to see a few more with some character growth for the caped crusader. Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’. www.cpmagazine.net

MASERATI GRECALE FUORISERIE Maserati is breaking the rules and fulfilling an order from Mars Maserati Fuoriserie is a blank slate and the brand is offering a wide range of designs and colours for it. The rest falls to the inspiration of individual customers (Martians too!), who are given the opportunity to take on the stance of a trendsetter and to express their personal creativity. The Mission from Mars has begun and the options to customise Grecale are pushed to their absolute limit.

The red dust of the planet Mars and its oxidised rocks crossfertilise Grecale Mission from Mars: a special textured metallic is paint inspired by mineral dust and metal erosion is used on components inside and out.

The exteriors are painted in Galactic Orange, a Fuoriserie interpretation of the bodywork in a multi-layered colour. Its highly liquid base is reminiscent of molten metal, on top of an intense, futuristic and almost frosted orange-red resin. To complete the exterior, Grecale Mission from Mars features special Vortex Wheels. 78

APRIL 2022

Not a mere customisation of the wheel rim from a chromatic perspective, but a genuine retelling of the mechanical processing of the material itself; its removal leaves behind a vortex design, recalling the displacement of air caused by start-up and travelling at speed. The raw surface is protected by a transparent topcoat of black ink. Conversely, the grey of the tyres is made from a special blend dedicated to the planet Mars.

The badges are specific and the trident on the C-pillar merges into the bodywork, giving it a 2D aspect, in larger proportions than usual. The design of the Trident logo has been revisited with a glitch effect, both symbolising the rhythm of the waves and information incoming from outer space, and bringing to mind the feeling of movement at very high speed. The mirror effect is similar to a solar lens, here embedded in the dark orange of the bodywork. E.T. may have phoned home with his finger, but all it takes in the Grecale Mission from Mars is a tap on the 12.3” screen, the largest ever seen in a Maserati, for an all-encompassing experience inside the car and out, all the way to another planet.

“Connectivity with outer space” is not the only feature to assist with a journey beyond the boundaries of the Earth: intergalactic motorists can find a special “star chart” right on the ceiling. Just look up to see a projection of the main constellations, ideal to transport yourself into spaces left out from most standard atlases.

After setting up your route, all you need to do is enjoy the journey, courtesy of Grecale’s best-in-class versatility and its interior: the seats act as the perfect pairing of a design inspired by the electric currents on Mars with astronauts’ spacesuits and the latest trends in fashion, bringing together craftsmanship and innovation. The design elements are reinterpreted with an innovative flair. Not only mere graphics, but also know-how, transformed through curiosity and openness to stimuli from the beauty of the future with the details lying in the colours and materials, filtered through the characteristic style of Maserati. Technology reigns in the cabin in terms of the upholstery too: the car’s interior uses transverse lasering with a contrasting multicoloured welded backing, taping, silicone coatings, embossing and debossing on leather, and leverages automotive materials such as Alcantara and leather.

The boldest journey through outer space takes off from Mars and lands in Milan, where the special one-off Maserati will be unveiled at an exclusive evening event, the epitome of the everyday exceptional. Grecale Mission from Mars is projecting Maserati forward into the future, as a bold synthesis of avant-garde, passion, and unbounded customisation, made possible by Fuoriserie.

MERCEDES-BENZ CARS MIDDLE EAST LAUNCHES

‘ROAD TO MECCA’

RAMADAN CAMPAIGN

Luxury automotive brand showcases the journey of the soul as it focuses on Nabil Al Rostamani’s inspiring pilgrimage of discovery to Mecca in Saudi Arabia On the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan, luxury automotive brand Mercedes-Benz Cars Middle East has launched the ‘Road to Mecca’ – a four-part docuseries that ventures through 5000 years of heritage, history and the present day simultaneously. The campaign focuses on the journey of Nabil Al Rostamani, a successful commercial aviation pilot, and his journey of selfdiscovery as he leaves behind his pilot wings to retrace the historic pilgrimage routes by road, from the United Arab Emirates to Saudi Arabia.

80

APRIL 2022

The journey to Mecca is a pilgrimage which many faithful Muslims have embarked on for thousands of years during the Holy Month of Ramadan. It is a time of year in which we focus on the things that really matter: our families, our unshakable values, and our faith. As Muslims continue to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors, the Mercedes-Benz campaign aims to highlight how the historic journey to Mecca has been transformed by modern technology. A journey on the ground that once took months to complete, enriched with the exchange of goods, ideas, and traditions, can now be completed in the span of a few hours by air. While the pilgrimage itself remains sacred, the tradition, heritage and history associated with the ancient journey on the ground has faded away with to the onset of modern technology.

Speaking to the launch of the campaign, Krishan Bodhani, Vice President and Director of Sales and Marketing of MercedesBenz Cars Middle East, said: “Mercedes-Benz has held a long and proud heritage and history in the Middle East, and we are constantly working towards ensuring that we are a part of the continued development and growth of the region across all fronts – including its rich history and timeless traditions. It is with great pride that we embark on this journey to Mecca together, and we thank Nabil Al Rostamani for allowing us to be a part of his deeply personal experience.”

The four-part docuseries follows Nabil Al Rostamani – devoted father, adventure seeker, nature lover, and hero of this iconic journey. A successful commercial aviation pilot, Nabil’s career sees him take to the skies as he whizzes to different destinations. However, his fast-paced lifestyle means that he is always skipping past the world below without ever stopping or slowing down to enjoy the ride or the destination itself. Through the docuseries, audience members will gain the opportunity to come along Nabil’s journey to Mecca in a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, all while retracing the historic pilgrimage routes our ancestors charted in their travels. The innovative docuseries aims to allow audience members to immerse themselves in the exploration of time, tradition and the priceless values that have withstood the test of time. Viewers will be able to see first-hand how a long trip can prove to be just as cathartic as the destination itself. Of his journey for the docuseries, Nabil Al Rostamani said: “When I was offered the opportunity to partner with Mercedes-Benz to travel to Mecca, I just couldn’t turn it down. Not only would I have the chance to relive the fond memories of the road trips I used to take with my father as a child, but I would also finally get to stop, slow down, and leave behind my pilot wings as I took the time to make the long road to Mecca in my G-Class. I am extremely grateful to Mercedes-Benz for the opportunity to be able to retrace my historic routes and allow me to share my journey of self-discovery with the world.” The ‘Road to Mecca’ docuseries will air during the month of Ramadan. Viewers can enjoy the four-part docuseries that will air weekly throughout the course of Ramadan on our dedicated YouTube channel and MBC Shahid. www.cpmagazine.net

ARIES

LEO

Prioritizing yourself this month should be, well, a priority! With the sun traveling through your sign, you should be looking for ways to push your agenda because the universe is in the mood to lend a helping hand. Follow your intuition whenever it speaks to you, dear Aries, especially if it pertains to your personal life or public image. Though you’ll be feeling as ambitious as ever, it’s important that you carve out plenty of time for self-care, especially once Venus enters Pisces on April 5. This planetary placement can be particularly healing for you but only if you put in the time to nurture yourself. Running away from rest or even your feelings can backfire during this time, so you’ll need to be proactive about going within and tapping in to your emotions. Luckily, these vibes can be extremely inspiring, helping you see the path ahead with more clarity and creativity. The fourteenth marks another significant shift for you as your ruling planet Mars enters your solar twelfth house. Use this energy to pull back from making big moves in favor of flying under the radar and planning your next great adventure. Look upon this astrological period as a bit of a “calm before the storm” as your mind, body, and soul gear up for a whirlwind of activity next month. Mars will enter Aries on May 2, giving you permission to pull the trigger on everything you’ve been meditating on throughout April.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS You might feel a little more irritable this month, dear Taurus, because the Aries sun brings its fiery and primal energy to the sector of your chart that rules the subconscious. These vibes can be particularly troublesome if you don’t get enough alone time, so make sure you’re taking plenty of breaks from socializing in order to recharge between work and personal engagements. If you feel yourself growing increasingly impatient with someone, it might be wise to step away for a few minutes and calm yourself in the fresh air. A dedicated meditation practice can also work wonders for you right now, giving you a chance to stay grounded amid the cosmic funk. You’ll begin to feel more grounded and like yourself beginning when the sun enters your sign on April 19. This solar placement acts like a salve to your soul, helping you let go of any issues that arose earlier in the month. If you come to the realization that you owe someone an apology for your short fuse, try to get it in when communicative Mercury blows a kiss to optimistic Jupiter on the twenty-eighth.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI You’ll be jumping from one social engagement to another this month, dear Gemini, as Aries season lights a fire in your solar eleventh house. These vibes could also inspire you to pick up a new extracurricular activity, especially if it involves taking a class at a local studio or community college. Just try not to get too carried away by your ambitions right now, or you could end up attempting to do too many things at once. Before you agree to attend a party, enroll in a course, or add an extra brunch to your already packed weekend, stop to think about whether or not you actually have the bandwidth to do so. After a whirlwind start to the month, you’ll begin to feel a bit more closed off once the sun moves into Taurus on April 19. This solar placement encourages you to slow down, especially if you’ve been feeling stretched thin. This energy could also impact your desire to communicate, since solace will seem more appealing than even a one-on-one with your bestie.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER This month, you could find yourself on the receiving end of more leadership opportunities at work as the Aries sun lights up the sector of your chart that governs career. Taking the reins when no one else wants to can help you gain the support and trust of your supervisors, though you might need to touch base with your assertive side. If you’re feeling stuck in your profession, this energy could also drum up impatience on your end, especially if your superiors have failed to deliver on any promises they made to you earlier. Don’t be afraid to ask for fair compensation or a promotion if you’re due one, dear Cancer, even if negotiations make you uncomfortable. You’ll feel an internal shift when passionate Mars enters watery Pisces and your solar ninth house on April 14. This planetary placement can inspire you to follow your intuition with more trust, especially if it ignites the fire within you. However, try not to act impulsively, tempting as it may be. You still need to balance your third eye with good sense.

APRIL 2022

Sparks of inspiration will light a fire within you this month as the Aries sun burns brightly in your solar ninth house. These vibes are poised to take you on a few journeys of the mind, though you might feel prompted to pack for some physical exploration as well. Whether you’re daydreaming at your desk or embarking on an adventure, give yourself permission to let go of what’s expected of you. Just don’t allow this sentiment to go too far, dear Leo. You still need to take care of your work and responsibilities. Your intuition is also set to receive a nice boost from this solar placement as the universe looks for ways to guide and communicate with you. However, your third eye could begin to frustrate you when the Libra full moon manifests in the sector of your chart that rules communication and thought processes on April 16. This cosmic climate could put you at a crossroads as Luna has you romanticizing your future while Pluto confronts you with the harsh logistical reality surrounding such dreams. Don’t feel disheartened by the work that lies before you. Instead, break it down piece by piece.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO April will act as a breath of fresh air for you, dear Virgo, because the Aries sun burns brightly in the sector of your chart that governs personal transformation. These vibes are perfect for starting over and eliciting change as the universe encourages you to leave behind any situations, habits, or people you’ve outgrown. Luckily, this solar placement also gives you the motivation and bravery you need to upend your life a bit, especially if it’s in the name of your soul’s evolution. Your love life is set to benefit from some celestial support beginning when Venus enters Pisces and your solar seventh house on April 5. This cosmic climate bestows a softness upon the collective, helping you melt any walls that have kept you away from your heart’s desire. Opening up will feel more organic than usual, giving you and anyone you’re involved with a chance to connect in new ways. These dreamy vibes are also perfect for self-love, making it important that you appreciate yourself just as much as you would the object of your affection.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA April kicks off with Aries season in full swing, dear Libra, bringing a serious dose of heat to your romantic life as the sun travels through your solar seventh house. If you’re in a committed relationship and the vibe has cooled a bit since you first met, now would be the time to ramp up the heat once more. Trying new things with your significant other can work wonders for your bond, helping you rediscover what you love about one another and rekindling your mutual passion. If you’re single, this cosmic climate is absolutely perfect for putting yourself first, so be sure to practice plenty of self-love and self-care. However, if you’re hoping to find a connection, there’s definitely a celestial possibility that you could meet someone new, though you’ll need to put yourself out there. Venus, your ruling planet, enters compassionate Pisces on April 5, asking you to loosen the reins a touch within your day-to-day life. If work-related pressure has been weighing heavily on your shoulders, you might need to take a few days off and maybe treat yourself to a massage. If you feel your stress level rising, this cosmic climate makes it easier for you to release and cope with such feelings, but you’ll need to give yourself permission to let go.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO Strange things could happen to your energy level this month, dear Scorpio, because the Aries sun is traveling through the sector of your chart that governs health and wellness. There will be many times when you feel energized, motivated, and ready to take on the day. However, this boost to your vigor could be fleeting if you don’t pace yourself, making it important that you maintain a healthy balance between movement and rest. You’ll also want to gauge how much time you spend assisting others. This solar placement can put you in a helpful mood, but you should consider what you already have on your plate before adding tasks that aren’t actually your responsibility. Your creative juices begin to flow when your ruler Mars enters Pisces and your solar fifth house on April 14. Allow this energy to move through you by embracing an artistic outlet of your choice. If you’ve been fantasizing about getting a new passion project off the ground, this is prime time to do so. The universe is looking for ways to reward your motivation and ambition.

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS When it comes to organizing get-togethers with your friends, you might need to take the reins this month, dear Sagittarius, because the Aries sun illuminates the sector of your chart that rules creativity, self-expression, and fun. Blowing off steam feels essential to your mental health right now, prompting you to rally your nearest and dearest for an adventure or two. While you can certainly benefit from rejuvenating your lust for life, try to keep in mind that not everyone is where you are physically or emotionally. The Aries energy circulating right now has a different impact on each person, and it could bring out aggressive behavior in others if you try to shift their focus in a direction that doesn’t align with their current priorities. Extend invitations to your friends if you want to see them, but don’t take it personally if they choose to apply their energy elsewhere.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN Get ready for a busy month at home, dear Capricorn. The Aries sun breathes life into your solar fourth house, inspiring you to take on all the domestic projects you’ve been putting off until spring’s arrival. Meanwhile, Venus, Mars, and Saturn continue their journey through the sector of your chart that governs finances and your connection to the material realms, giving you permission to spend a little cash on your surroundings. Though you tend to be fairly reserved with your spending, don’t feel guilty about splurging on new interior design accents. The universe wants you to spoil yourself a bit! Unfortunately, your ruler Saturn is locked in a harsh t-square with the lunar nodes throughout the month, which could leave you feeling a bit restricted in your creativity and movements. Don’t push yourself to revamp your space (or your life, for that matter) if you’re not totally into it. There could also be a sense that your friends are moving on with their lives while you’re stuck standing still, but try not to stress yourself out over it. Capricorns are known as the late bloomers of the zodiac, which means you’ll peak just as everyone else around you seems to be hitting a slump.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS Your mind will be eager for new knowledge this month, dear Aquarius, as the sun and Mercury make their way through Aries and the sector of your chart that governs learning and curiosity. However, don’t feel like you have to focus all your brainpower in one area, this energy should be used to explore a broad range of topics, or you could get bored attempting to master one specific subject. Have fun with your thoughts and play with new ideas, but don’t commit to any of them unless you’re called to do so at a deep level. The vibe shifts when the sun moves into Taurus and the sector of your chart that governs the home on April 19. This energy is perfect for updating your space, especially if you’ve been meaning to redecorate. You’ll also feel more called to enjoy the comforts of your home most evenings, opting for a cozy night in rather than a crazed night on the town. However, that doesn’t mean you need to go into hermit mode. Inviting your friends over for game or movie nights is a great way to marry this cosmic climate with your naturally social demeanor.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES Avoid spending recklessly this month, dear Pisces, or you could end up blowing your budget before you even have a chance to assess it. With Aries traveling through the sector of your chart that governs money, it would be easy for your bank account to hit an uncomfortable low, especially if you don’t remain centered and practical. Even tiny impulse purchases while waiting in line at the grocery store can begin to add up, making it important that you use financial discernment at all times. Luckily, this energy can also help you gain money quickly, especially on April 17, though you’ll need to strike while the iron is hot. If an opportunity arises to make some scratch, you should try to decide quickly whether you want to take it on or the job will likely pass to someone else. All this quick movement could begin to make your head spin, but try not to get caught up in a tizzy when it comes to making or spending right now.
