IT’S GAME ON AT THE EUROS! Gill Sherry

After so many months of frustration, when flights were grounded, restaurants were closed and concerts and sporting events were cancelled, it was good to finally have something to shout about. Regardless of your sporting preferences, there’s no denying the UEFA European Football Championships (or the ‘Euros’ as they’re affectionately known) restored that sense of excitement that had been absent for so long. Originally due to take place last year, Euro 2020 finally kicked off on 11th June 2021, with Italy beating Turkey in the opening group stage match. Twenty-four teams would compete, including the World Cup holders, France, their squad boasting big name players including Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema. But it was their neighbours, Belgium, who began the tournament as favourites, their in-form striker Romelo Lukaku and Manchester City midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, just two of the players responsible for propelling Belgium to the top of the FIFA World Rankings. Matches would be hosted by eleven different countries, with the semi-finals and final taking place at Wembley Stadium in London. Significantly, the final would be watched by a crowd of 60,000 fans, the first of its size since the global pandemic began. There were no major surprises in the group stage which saw Turkey, Russia, North Macedonia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Finland and Scotland eliminated after three games. It was Scotland’s first major tournament since 1998 but they failed to register a win. That said, they did manage a goalless draw against their old rivals, England, a minor victory in the eyes of the Scottish. All other eyes, however, were on Denmark. In their opening match against Finland on 12th June, former Tottenham Hotspur favourite, Christian Eriksen, suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch, 8

JULY 2021

a shocking and deeply upsetting incident that overshadowed the football. Thankfully, and despite initial fears, he recovered from the trauma and is recovering well. Controversially, the decision was made to continue with the match which Finland went on to win 1-0. But while Denmark may have lost the game, they won the hearts of football fans worldwide, with many adopting the Nordic nation as their new tournament favourites. Denmark’s second group match saw them lose to Belgium but a 4-0 win over Russia in their third game resulted in a place in the last sixteen where they knocked out Wales in a 4-0 victory of their own. Italy defeated Austria on the same day and a win for Czech Republic over the Netherlands followed. Christiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, having scraped through to the last sixteen, faced Belgium in their first knock-out game. But there would be no winner’s medal for the Madeira-born striker this time, Thorgan Hazard’s 42nd minute goal enough to give victory to the Belgians. Ronaldo, however, didn’t leave entirely empty handed. His two goals against Hungary saw him become the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Euros. His goals also meant he’d scored in all nine of his major tournaments, including four World Cups. He may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you can’t deny his exceptional talent and, thanks to his five goals, he was still favourite to win the Golden Boot. Spain secured a hard-earned victory in their match against Croatia, winning 5-3 after extra time. The game between France and Switzerland also required an extra thirty minutes but, with neither side able to produce a winner, it was decided on penalties. Kylian Mbappe stepped up to take the deciding kick, an unconvincing attempt that was saved by the Swiss goalkeeper, Yann Sommer. Au revoir, France.

England were up next against the Germans. England’s top striker, Harry Kane, had yet to score in the tournament and they hadn’t beaten Germany in a knock-out match in fiftyfive years. The Germans, however, were no match for Gareth Southgate’s ‘three lions’ and with Kane finally finding the net to add to Raheem Sterling’s opener, the Germans were heading home. The final game of the last sixteen saw Sweden take on Ukraine. Extra time was again required in which substitute, Dovbyk, scored a winning header in the 121st minute, sending a jubilant Ukraine through to the quarter finals. Spain’s quarter final match against Switzerland also required extra time and penalties. It’s fair to say most of the spot kicks were poor, the penalty scoreline of 3-1 telling its own story and sending Spain through to the last four. The Belgium/Italy quarter final was highly anticipated. The world’s number one team against an Italian side unbeaten in thirty-one games promised to have viewers on the edge of their seats. It was a close contest with Italy’s tireless teamwork ultimately overriding the individual skill of Belgium’s bigname stars. It ended Belgium 1, Italy 2. With the Danes still ‘doing it for Christian’ they pulled off an impressive 2-1 win over Czech Republic earning them a place in the semi-final – their first since 1992. They were also the first team to reach the semi-final after losing their first two games in the competition. Was their name on the trophy, perhaps? The last game of the quarter-finals saw Ukraine take on England in Rome. It was a comprehensive victory for the English in which Harry Kane added two more to his goal tally and Harry McGuire and Jordan Henderson both scored impressive headers. Final score: England 4, Ukraine 0. On to the semi-finals in which Italy would play Spain and England would face Denmark. A little surprising, maybe, but no less exciting. In fact, the prospect of new names and new heroes was a welcome one. Spain and Italy were up first, an exciting competition between two teams in excellent form. They were evenly matched and could not be separated, even after extra time. So, the dreaded penalty shoot-out followed, a tense contest with mistakes from both sides. Ultimately, Italy came out on top, Morata’s failure to convert capitalized on by Chelsea’s midfielder, Jorginho. On to England and Denmark. Doubtless, England could benefit from the home advantage, their vocal fans easily outsinging the 7,800 Danes inside Wembley. It was an enthralling game and a spectacular free kick from Mikkel Damsgaard saw Denmark take the lead. But just nine minutes later, the in-form Raheem Sterling forced an own goal from Simon Kjaer and it remained at 1-1 after ninety minutes. It was a contentious penalty decision that saw England steal the win in extra time. The referee blew for a foul by Joakim Maehle on Sterling in the box and although the incident was looked at by VAR, the decision stood. Harry Kane’s spot kick was saved by keeper, Casper Schmeichel, but Kane was first to the rebound, firing the ball into the back of the net and firing England into the final. Denmark would, rightly, feel aggrieved but it’s fair to say England had the edge. The Danes had made five substitutions in normal time and had already made the sixth when Mathias Jensen was forced off injured. As a result, they played most of the second half of extra time with only ten men and were

no match for the fresh legs of England’s extra time substitutes. Much to the disappointment of most ‘neutral’ fans, Denmark were out. The number of substitutions allowed during the Euros caused confusion for many fans but EUFA had confirmed the rules prior to commencement of the tournament. According to their official statement, each side could make five changes in ninety minutes and would have three opportunities to make substitutions, plus the half-time break. In the event of extratime, sides would be permitted a sixth change. So, could England win their first major tournament since their famous World Cup victory in 1966? To do so, they would need to beat an impressive Italian side managed by Roberto Mancini. The three lions had not beaten the ‘Azzurri’ in their past three meetings so Gareth Southgate’s men would need to play the game of their lives. Thanks to Luke Shaw’s unforgettable strike just two minutes into the game, England took an early lead. But the Italians fought their way back and scored an equalizer in the 67th minute. It remained 1-1, forcing extra time. But neither team could find a winner and a penalty shoot-out was inevitable. With this in mind, Gareth Southgate made two last-minute substitutions, bringing on two youngsters (Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka) in the dying seconds of the game. Unfortunately for England, the plan backfired with both players unable to convert their spot kicks. Italy’s goalkeeping giant, Gianluigi Donnarumma, saved their attempts after Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford had already failed to hit the target. And although Jordan Pickford stopped Andrea Belotti’s and Jorginho’s shots, the Italians won the shoot-out 3-2. It was heartbreaking for England’s players and particularly painful for those courageous enough to step forward. The one consolation for the England team was the Golden Glove, awarded to Jordan Pickford for his five clean sheets. He only conceded two goals (excluding penalty shoot-outs) in the tournament and was arguably one of the three lions’ best players. The Golden Boot was, indeed, won by Christiano Ronaldo for his five goals and one assist, the latter giving him the edge over Patrik Schick of Czech Republic who also netted five times. But the glory, of course, went to Italy. After thirty-four games unbeaten, they were crowned Champions of Europe. They may not have been the favourites, but they were most definitely worthy winners. As for the fans, regardless of nationality, sporting favourites or team allegiance, it was good to see supporters back in the stands. Roll on Qatar! www.cpmagazine.net

SHAHEEN CHISHTI Oppression to emancipation: British-Indian author launches gripping debut novel,

“THE GRANDDAUGHTER PROJECT” A modern visionary and one of the newest authors of British-Indian heritage, Shaheen Chishti has written a deeply emotional and raw story, poignantly telling the shared experience of three, very different women, who collectively use their voices to improve societal attitudes for their granddaughters. The men around these women, who play prominent roles in their lives, put them into desperate situations. Young and alone, they fight to overcome their experiences. The result is a masterful original fiction novel, as profound as it is awe-inspiring. “The Granddaughter Project” grips the reader, as the complex past lives of the women are revealed and their connection to one another deepens. These warrior women tell their stories for the first time to their granddaughters, hoping that they can succeed where they failed and that they feel empowered, inspired and supported to do what is best for themselves. We had the opportunity to sit down with Shaheen and know more about his project. Here is our exclusive interview with Shaheen Chishti for all of you.

18

JULY 2021

What prompted you to write The Granddaughter Project?

As society has historically been unjust to women, they have lived their lives in fear of the consequences of existing in a marginalized gender. I wrote The Granddaughter Project in hopes of creating an environment and a potential future in which my daughters, granddaughters, and women everywhere were respected and treated with equality and fairness. The journey towards this goal has begun through the first waves of equality activists and, while we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go. To fully understand the struggles of women in society, we must create an environment that allows them to speak up about their experiences without holding them back or harboring a fear of judgment. Only through providing this will we be able to allow women to reach their full potential in society. By writing this book, I want to encourage women to find their voices and obtain power over their narratives. As many women have carried their secrets to their graves, we must ensure that this does not continue moving forward and that the same experiences are not repeated by empowering women to speak up.

What lessons did you learn when writing the book?

Through the research I have done while writing the book, I have been enlightened about women’s strength and appalled at the suffering and abuse they have gone through, specifically in times of war, famine, and poverty. While we are vaguely aware that such atrocities happen; however, it is essential to read up on these incidents to be thoroughly familiar with the extent of the abuse which has gone down in history. While it is easy to blame such abuse on the enemy, it is unfortunately quite common for this to be instigated amongst families and friends. Learning about that and the trauma that has affected women worldwide by those closest to them, has been an eye-opener for me. It has led me to realize the need for additional light that needs to be shined on this topic.

Were the characters inspired by real people? If yes, why did you write about them and are their experiences real?

While the stories might not have been taken word for word from various girls and women, these characters are inspired by the collective of women who have gone through the same suffering and horrors. Each of these stories echoes the experiences of thousands and millions of women who suffered similar fates. The characters themselves have been based on women that I know with inspiring stories, which has prompted me to share them with the world to focus on this societal issue. In addition, the

various characters have been based on lifechanging events which have taken place in the last 130 years, including the Bengal Famine of 1943, the Holocaust, and the 1958 Notting Hill race riots.

What was your biggest fear about publishing The Granddaughter Project?

My biggest fear, both when writing and publishing The Granddaughter Project, was not doing the women of my book and the ones who have inspired it the justice that they deserve. So, as the women in my life have opened up to me about their experiences of abuse and suffering, I made sure to write the book taking their perspectives, thoughts, and feelings into account as accurately as possible to portray their experiences with honor and respect. Another fear that rose was the reception of this book. Writing this book has always been about spreading awareness of the cause in the truest form possible. This book might be uncomfortable to some. However, it is only through discomfort that change can arise.

What would you say is men’s role in the journey towards female empowerment?

Unfortunately, we live in a society that remains unequal and unjust, favoring men over women in the majority of the different parts of the world. To balance the scales, the effort must not only come from women, as that is not the issue in achieving equality. Men must also advocate for the cause for true justice and understanding to be accomplished. For women to be comfortable sharing their stories, men must also create a favorable and safe space for them to do so.

“I truly believe that this book demonstrates just how much of a melting pot the world is, but one in which we have more in common than is often assumed.” www.cpmagazine.net

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WITH EXERCISE Fatema AlOthman

Build up your immune system the natural way. When we’re hit with the cold, the flu, or a life changing illness, we’re reminded very quickly just how important the immune system is to our overall wellness. Unfortunately, there’s no single magic pill that will transform your immune system into a superhero. You can learn how to improve your immune system with exercise! Regular exercise is one of those lifestyle tweaks that can improve your immune system. How to Improve Your Immune System with Exercise:

1. Exercise gets the immune system in gear. 2. Exercise lowers stress hormone levels. 3. Exercise helps you sleep better. 4. Exercise may help purge ineffective T-cells. What happens when you get too much of a good thing? Some research suggests that heavy, acute exercise may temporarily lower immune response. It’s believed that heavy exercise increases stress, which, in turn, has a negative impact on the immune system. Experts say these types of exercise include endurance races and marathons, which can weaken the immune system for up to 72 hours after working out.

WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

Jim West

24

JULY 2021

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “Ali Wetzel Sessions” days of my journey.

In February I switched from Carey Drilling as my trainer to Ali Wetzel. Ali's training certification is from Action training. She is also certified by NASM training certification specializing in women's fitness and corrective training. Ali is an nationally qualified bikini competitor. She placed first in class E at the San Antonio Classic, 1st in class E at the Bob Cicherillo Championship, and 8th at the North American Championship National Show.

With just over 30 days left till the Slam Dunk Challenge, I still had a lot of work ahead of me. Ali showed me some exercises that would help me gain more mobility and balance. I remembered the 80;s classic Karate Kid films and how Mr. Miyagi would tell Daniel-san that balance was key. That is so true. In life as in everything else. Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had at the start of 2021. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe!

Ali conducted a mobility assessment and we quickly discovered I had serious balance issues. I just couldn't maintain balance on one leg. We focused mainly on leg strength for the Slam Dunk Challenge. She had me doing various lunges and jumping exercises. I had lots of fun in our training sessions. Now that I knew that I had a weakness in my balance I had a new goal to make that weakness into a strength.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover more unique experiences. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial www.cpmagazine.net

JULIA DAVIY Welcome to a radically sustainable, cruelty-free digital 3D-printable art Universe. Welcome to New Age of fashion & jewelry products The bags were conceived as functional objets d’art whose striking yet elegantly nuanced design complements a wide range of ensembles. Their unique design, materials, visual texture, and production process are inspired by morphogenesis—the means by which nature produces differentiation from groups of identical cells and develops shapes. Daviy begins with the simple line as a unifying motif for the collection, creating variations on that theme that range from the voluptuously rich to the subtly understated. “For some time,” reflects Daviy, “I have been looking to achieve zero- or even positive impact towards natural ecosystems through the transformation of standard manufacturing processes. Working in this direction, I discovered immense potential in the intersection of additive manufacturing technologies, computational design and an environment-centered approach. The Morphogenesis collection is about far more than mimicking the natural patterns. It is rather about the solutions we use today to radically sustain the products in the fashion industry.” Alan Turing first described the chemical process of morphogenesis in 1952. His findings were only validated 60 years later, just as Daviy began developing plans for a waste-free, sustainable textile manufacturing process centered around 3D printing. The Morphogenesis collection is Daviy’s first to incorporate her application of Turing’s research.

The Morphogenesis line of sustainable bags is produced on 3D printers. Each bag’s material and design requires a customized manufacturing process; depending on the demands of a given bag, Daviy may use multi jet fusion, continuous digital light projection, and more traditional stereolithography, or selective laser sintering. All bags are produced using additive manufacturing processes to achieve vanishingly small degrees of wastefulness and net carbon production. Daviy’s painstakingly calibrated production process reduces her luxury bags’ carbon footprint by more than 92%, and radically (98% -99%) decreases the water use, pollution, and waste compared with traditional leather bags' product lifecycle. Just as importantly, the entire process is traceable and transparent. To achieve full carbon zero, Julia Daviy is providing carbon footprint offset with investing in a tree planting. www.cpmagazine.net

SEVEN SIMPLE TIPS FROM FITNESS FIRST TO ENSURE YOU STAY HYDRATED, HAPPY AND HEALTHY It’s never too late to re-evaluate your hydration levels and ensure that you are drinking the daily required amount of water. Staying hydrated is crucial for our health and wellbeing. 60% of an adult human body is made up of water and some of the most vital organs in our body consist of a large ratio of water too. For example, the brain is 70% water, lungs are 90% water, and our blood is made up of more than 80% water. The water in our blood ensures the flow and distribution of proteins, glucose, mineral ions, hormones and hemoglobin, which facilitates oxygen transfer. Water also helps regulate our body temperature, transports nutrients through our cells, moisturizes mucous membranes, and ensures discharge of body waste.  Ana Carolina Corsi Pereira, Fitness Manager at Fitness First says, “water is released out of our bodies every day in the form of sweat, urine and breath. Such types of excretion leak electrolytes that play an important role in contracting muscles, maintaining the body’s hydration levels, and regulating our body’s pH level. Therefore, to ensure our body retains the needed amount of water, drinking an adequate 2 litres of water every day is essential.” To ensure we’re consuming the recommended 2 litres of water a day, Ana Carolina Corsi Pereira, Fitness Manager at Fitness First shares some simple, yet effective ways on how to stay hydrated, happy, and healthy throughout the hot summer months.

Add flavour to your water

Inject some flavour to your H2O by adding a variety of fruits and fresh veggies to your water. Citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges are all popular water enhances but there are plenty of other flavours that can satisfy your taste buds. Cucumber and fresh mint are fantastic refreshing flavours – especially in the summer. For something a little sweet, try crushing raspberries or watermelon, or adding strawberry slices.

Change it up with coconut water

Coconut water contains a high amount of potassium, which is excellent for hydration and cell recovery, post-exercise. It also contains electrolytes, including magnesium, sodium and phosphorous and is lower in sugar than most sports drinks, making it a great alternative for a hydrating beverage before, during or after medium – intensity exercise. Tip: Coconut water is lower in sodium than most sports drinks, so if you are planning on carrying out high-intensity or prolonged exercise, make sure you get some additional sodium from another fluid or snack.

Eat water-rich food

A sneaky yet effective way to ensure the daily intake of recommended water is consuming water-rich foods. Add fruits and vegetables with high water content to your daily diet. Some great options include cucumber (96% water), zucchini (95% water), watermelon (92% water) and grapefruit (91% water).

Hydrate before, during and after exercise

Water intake is critical. It helps regulate body temperature, lubricates the joints, and transports nutrients to ensure the body has enough energy. Dehydration can cause the body to feel more tired during exercise and can weaken your mental function, which is why it is so important to key hydrated before, during and after exercise. 32

JULY 2021

There are several factors to consider including heat, humidity, sweat rate and length of time of activity, however the below is a good guideline to follow on how much water you should be consuming: l17-20 ounces of water, two – three hours prior to exercise l8 ounces of water 20-30 minutes before exercise or during your

warmup l7-10 ounces of water every 10-20 minutes during exercise l8 ounces of water within 30 minutes after exercise

Keep a jug or water bottle next to you

When we are busy at work it can make it extremely difficult to maintain the habit of drinking water throughout the day. Keeping a jug and glass by your desk or carrying a 500ml water bottle in your bag as you travel is a great reminder to stay hydrated and ensure you are consuming the recommended daily intake of water.

Kick start the day with herbal tea

Herbal tea is an excellent way to start the day. You can enjoy it warm or cold and they come with a range of delicious flavours including floral, spicy, and sweet. Herbal teas are extremely high in antioxidants which help reduce oxidative stress and prevent chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. In simple words, herbal tea is delicious, flavoured water with a whole host of extra healthy benefits.

Choose sparkling or mineral water over a soda

If you are someone who likes a fizzy drink break during work or simply enjoys sipping on a soda, try and get into the habit of replacing these drink choices with refreshing sparkling or mineral water. As many of us are already aware, fizzy drinks contain an excessive amount of added sugar which transforms to fat deposits in the liver, causing adverse effects on our overall health. A simple lifestyle choice of drinking water instead of sugary soda drinks can decrease the chances of heart diseases and help weight loss.

Easily accessed by ferry and air, Crete is a bounty of beaches, gorges, rivers, mountains, and plains framed by historical wonder, customs, and traditions. A lush Mediterranean landscape and rocky shorelines prevail on Greece’s largest island which is said to be the birthplace of the Minoan who flourished between 3000-1200 BC, mainly in central and eastern Crete. In an almost mythical setting tucked into the picturesque coves of Crete, Minos Beach Art Hotel, member of Design Hotels, is an assembly of waterfront bungalows and gardens that spans 2.5 km of coastline with an open-air art museum at the core of its concept. Here, on the southern Greek isle, an original building from 1963 and a cluster of bungalows and villas with private pools house 121 rooms, which have been radically renovated while retaining a throwback fishing village charm. Once inhabited by local fishers decades ago, today the waterfront slice of paradise boasts two sandy beaches—the pinnacle of secluded luxury—more than 50 unique art installations, and high regard for all that is local and sustainable. Located on the shores of Mirabello Bay, Minos Beach Art Hotel is just a few minutes away from the elegant resort town of Agios Nikolaos. Drawing on the traditional architecture style of eastern Crete’s fishing villages, the low-lying whitewashed villas and bungalows are set in harmony with a landscape of craggy rocks, sandy shores, abundant greenery, and unobstructed views of the Aegean Sea. Inside, sleek design is complemented by a tactile world of raw concrete and tile, exposed wood beams and joinery, and earthy jute. A deep respect for the balance between the local environment and economy means much has been sourced from Crete and within the country. Custom designed rooms feature Greek beds by Adorno and mattresses by Elite Strom, both Greek companies, and materials-at-large have been selected with minimal environmental impact as a criteria. and neutral palette provides the perfect backdrop to the hotel’s more than 50 art installations displayed throughout the property, creating a living-museum atmosphere. Artworks inspired by the island’s natural surroundings are sitespecific commissions by local artists created for the hotel and its garden, and are rounded out by a selection of work by international artists. The hotel’s connection to the art world goes back to 1988, when Original Gina Mamidakis organized the very first Art Symposium. Driven by the idea that tourism should be a holistic cultural experience—pioneering for the time—Mamidakis long ago planted the seeds for a thriving cultural experience rooted in Greek hospitality. The mission of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation is to create and implement programs and actions that are consistent with its vision concerning the arts, people, and the environment. Much of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation art collection is found in the hotel and its Open Art Air Museum. Award-winning chef Giannis Baxevanis oversees the culinary program, drawing upon a handful of trusted local suppliers. Much of the produce used in the three restaurants, four bars, and kafenio (traditional coffee shop) are sourced from trusted local suppliers in and around Agios Nicolaos, including many of the wines that come from area vineyards and wineries. Guests have an abundance of options for great Greek and Cretan cuisine, from the pool bar or seafront wine bar to al fresco dining and a more formal fine restaurant experience at La Bouillabaisse. With community wellness at the forefront, Minos is committed to taking concrete actions that support local businesses and products, with the aim of protecting and restoring the natural environment, vulnerable communities, and staff wellbeing. www.cpmagazine.net

THE SCENT OF TRADITION AND TRENDS CityPages Magazine dives into the rich history of the highly-coveted fragrance, which carries such strong significance throughout the Arab region

Rasasi, a pioneer in the field of perfume retail, has contributed to the evolution of the modern perfume industry in the Middle East. Over the last four decades, the company has built a solid foundation of pioneering entrepreneurial vigour, creating some of the best and most exclusive fragrances, which have established a worldwide reputation for quality, luxury and elegance. We sit down with Rasasi Perfumes managing director Salim Kalsekar to talk market challenges, expansion plans and oriental scent distinctions.

CityPages Magazine: Fragrance has gone from luxury indulgence to a must-have accessory in a few decades. How did it happen? Salim Kalsekar: In the Middle East, fragrances have been ingrained into the daily lives of people for thousands of years, endorsed by both, the cultural and religious traditions of the region. The famous ancient incense and perfume routes to the west were witness to thriving perfume trades between the Arabian Peninsula and the west and was the seat of production of many exotic perfumes. In a typical Khaleeji home, the use of a fragrance goes beyond just perfuming the body and extends to the perfuming of one’s home. Within the Arabian culture, it is a daily ritual to perfume one’s home several times a day through the burning of incense, agarwood or bukhoor, imbibing the fragrant smoke directly onto clothes and the hair, for both men and women. Rasasi Perfumes, a pioneer within the fragrance industry in the Middle East offers consumers an array of products to satisfy all their perfuming needs. Personal care products such as perfumes have gained popularity through the years as a must-have accessory due to the growing importance of personal grooming. The shift occurred during the 2008 recession when hordes of middle-aged people found themselves out of jobs and competing with the newly qualified Gen Y. Suddenly, being well groomed became an essential element to secure employment, of which perfumes became an important component. In addition to personal grooming, fragrances also provide users with numerous other benefits such as boosting one’s mood and confidence, transforming impressions into memories, and making one feel more alluring. CPM: What are the trends in the industry? SK: There is a higher demand for luxurious fragrances with complex combinations that are exhilarating and outstanding. In addition, there is a major focus on cleaner, richer, fruitier and floral notes, as well as an increase in the desire for new formulas, aromas and sustainable packaging. According to our experts, the trending notes of 2021 would be Leather, Floral, Fruity and Earthy. Given the demand for new formulations and compositions, Rasasi has recently launched the all-new Somow Al Rasasi Ma’ali Eau de Parfum which highlights numerous gourmand notes and rich florals, providing consumers with a completely new experience in the form of an enigmatic and enthralling scent. An increased interest for crosscultural influences for inspiration is yet another global trend. Rasasi has been ahead of the curve as it has earned a formidable reputation for creating some of the most coveted fusion fragrances; scents that combine the magic of the East with the sophistication of the West. The LaYuqawam collection and the Boruzz series have become cult classics with a global following. CPM: What about the luxury market? Do people want innovation or is there comfort in long-running perfumes? SK: Following the unprecedented year of 2020, consumers within the luxury market are no longer solely driven by the latest products available. Instead, consumers are paying careful attention to the brand itself, its legacy, whether they have a sense of association with the brand and whether the brand holds a sense of stature in society. Many consumers within the luxury market are loyal to brands that either elevate their status in society, find a connection with or have a genuine affinity for their products. For example, over the last four decades, many of our elite clientele have been loyal customers of our old range of rare Dhanal oudh from India despite the introduction of new variants and new trends. Having said this, experimentation and innovation is big with the new generation who constantly seek the ‘NEW’ in all things, always looking for new formulations to try and experience. In today’s world, personalisation of products is the key as people are always on the lookout for an exclusive product that is unique to their needs and preferences. 46

JULY 2021

CPM: What will this decade be remembered for? SK: Oudh, the cherished fragrance within the Middle East and known as liquid gold within the perfumery industry continues to gain momentum. A centuries-old ingredient, oudh has finally percolated shelves, stores and the olfactory notes of beauty and perfume brands around the globe with other legendary perfume houses adopting the oriental note. The mysterious ingredient is finally having its very own moment in the spotlight. Oriental perfumery is very eclectic and offers a great diversity of scents to suit different scent palettes. From fresh and floral to spicy and woody, from sprays to concentrated perfumes and pure essences to agarwood fumes there are a great variety to suit different tastes. Rasasi Perfumes is amongst first flag bearers of oriental perfumery and a pioneer of oriental retail and distribution around the globe. Following the last year and as a major focus for 2021, has been on clean products, many are looking for more transparency and sustainability from both fragrance and beauty brands on ‘how’ and ‘where’ they source the ingredients being used. Some of the signature ingredients used within Rasasi’s perfumes include oudh, sandalwood and rose, with all three primarily being sourced directly from India and other parts of the world under stringent quality control guidelines. As the market continues to evolve, there is also a continuous race for innovation and experimentation with immersive experiences taking centre stage in giving customers a wholesome experience that is truly unique and memorable. CPM: Somow al Rasasi Ma’ali EDP is your latest addition, an enigmatic and enthralling scent. How was the journey until the launch of this all-new perfume? SK: Developing a perfume is as much an art as it is a science and sometimes takes several years to develop a new composition. It all starts with a small idea or an inspiration and things get woven around the concept. Somow Al Rasasi started with the idea of translating enigma into reality- the idea of capturing the stillness, mystique, simmering warmth and the romance of a desert night. As with any other development there were setbacks and victories. In our forty years of experience of blending notes, we have come to realise that passion and perseverance are key to success. The Somow Al Rasasi Ma’ali Eau de Parfum is a completely fresh unisex fragrance that introduces new contemporary notes to the Middle East’s perfumery industry for the first time. The fragrance reimagines the symbolic Oudh as a modern manifestation, harnessing tantalizing gourmand notes and rich florals. The highlight mystery accord gives Oudh a bewildering twist while preserving its natural brilliance and opulence. The subtle salt note - a new fragrance note inflected into the heart of the fragrance makes the perfume a magnum opus of dark enigmatic mystique that wraps you in alluring mystery. Developed in collaboration with one of the leading international fragrance houses, this perfume has been crafted after extensive research and sets the benchmark in the regional fragrance industry for its innovative composition. It has no similarity and cannot be compared to any other fragrance currently available in the market. There was a lot of anticipation during the launch of the Somow Al Rasasi Ma’ali Eau de Parfum, as we experimented with an entirely new formulation. However, the response of our existing and new customers has been overwhelming. From the fragrance, to the beautiful lacquered black bottle with gold highlights and the faux leather box that encases the perfume, every little detail ensures an elevated customer experience. CPM: Which perfume do you want to be remembered most for? SK: The core philosophy of Rasasi Perfumes is to create scents that elevate the personality of our customers and bring them joy and www.cpmagazine.net

47

happiness in everyday moments. Instead of being remembered for one perfume, we as a brand truly believe in bolstering this philosophy through our unparalleled expertise and commitment to provide our customers with the best fragrances that reflect their ever-changing tastes and demands. Each bottle of a Rasasi fragrance is a pledge of quality, luxury and sign of appreciation towards the customers. CPM: What is the key to the success of Rasasi? SK: Rasasi Perfumes has remained committed to its raison d'être of quality, creating some of the finest perfumes that epitomize sophistication, and moreover, mastered the art of blending fragrances over the last four decades. We combine the best of talent, science, and technology to continuously create unforgettable experiences that celebrate the wearer. To do this, we stay on the cutting edge of growth by investing in the latest technologies and adopting the latest innovations within our manufacturing processes. Our products are subjected to stringent quality management procedures to ensure that they meet the highest international requirements. We also adhere to industry best practices and specifications by sourcing the finest raw materials and ensuring that each of our products undergo a focused and rigorous development phase to provide the best possible end-product to our loyal customers. Above all, the team pours in a lot of love when developing and creating a new composition. Rasasi created a brand that can be compared with the best without costing an arm and a leg. CPM: Rasasi has built a solid foundation of pioneering entrepreneurial vigor, creating some of the best and most exclusive fragrances, which have established a worldwide reputation for quality, luxury and elegance. What is the biggest challenge for Rasasi at the moment? SK: With the ever-changing market demands, one of the main goals for fragrance houses is to always be innovative and experimental when producing a new scent. Rasasi always strives to provide customers with fresh and exciting experiences however, the creative process of turning a concept into a perfume can be extremely complex and technical. It takes plenty of time, effort and dedication to achieve the harmony of notes in our blends in order to create the perfect scent and achieve the level of quality, luxury and elegance we are known for. The ever-changing tastes of consumers ensure that we can no longer rest on our laurels. We must be ahead of the game, constantly innovating, leading and delivering new experiences to customers to be able to retain our loyal clientele as well as appeal to new markets and consumers. This requires huge financial commitment as well. We are up against the huge marketing machinery of the western brands. We cannot never match those investments but what we promise to give is the original and unaltered oriental experience. CPM: Do you have expansion plans in the Middle East or abroad? Any other new projects in the pipeline? SK: Rasasi operates over 165 elegantly designed dedicated showrooms at leading malls and prime market locations across the GCC, and its products are exported to more than 60 countries across the globe through a strong distribution network. Looking ahead, Rasasi, will explore both international growth and restructuring in the face of new market trends. We will continue to seek out new retail destinations and strive to have the best consumer experience possible through our new concept stores, which emphasize a journey of exploration and new immersive experiences in elevated settings. 48

Love People, Use Things: Because the Opposite Never Works

The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream: The Hunt for a Victorian Era Serial Killer

by Joshua Fields Millburn, Ryan Nicodemus

by Dean Jobb

by Eliot Brown, Maureen Farrell

Imagine a life with less: less stuff, less clutter, less stress and debt and discontent—a life with fewer distractions. Now, imagine a life with more: more time, more meaningful relationships, more growth and contribution and contentment—a life of passion, unencumbered by the trappings of the chaotic world around you. What you’re imagining is an intentional life. And to get there, you’ll have to let go of some clutter that’s in the way. In Love People Use Things, Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus move past simple decluttering to show how minimalism makes room to reevaluate and heal the seven essential relationships in our lives: stuff, truth, self, money, values, creativity, and people. They use their own experiences— and those of the people they have met along the minimalist journey—to provide a template for how to live a fuller, more meaningful life. Because once you have less, you can make room for the right kind of more.

“When a doctor does go wrong he is the first of criminals,” Sherlock Holmes observed during one of his most baffling investigations. “He has nerve and he has knowledge.”

In 2001, Adam Neumann arrived in New York after five years as a conscript in the Israeli navy. Just over fifteen years later, he had transformed himself into the charismatic CEO of a company worth $47 billion at least on paper. With his long hair and feel-good mantras, the 6-foot-five Neumann, who grew up in part on a kibbutz, looked the part of a messianic Silicon Valley entrepreneur. The vision he offered was mesmerizing: a radical reimagining of work space for a new generation, with its fluid jobs and lax office culture. He called it WeWork. Though the company was merely subleasing amenity-filled office space to freelancers and small startups, Neumann marketed it like a revolutionary product and investors swooned. As billions of funding dollars poured in, Neumann's ambitions grew limitless. WeWork wasn't just an office space provider, he boasted. It would build schools, create WeWork cities, even colonize Mars. Could he, Neumann wondered from the ice bath he'd installed in his office, become the first trillionaire or a world leader? In pursuit of its founder's grandiose vision, the company spent money faster than it could bring it in.

The New York Times bestselling author of the The Book of Lost Names returns with an evocative coming-of-age World War II story about a young woman who uses her knowledge of the wilderness to help Jewish refugees escape the Nazis—until a secret from her past threatens everything. After being stolen from her wealthy German parents and raised in the unforgiving wilderness of eastern Europe, a young woman finds herself alone in 1941 after her kidnapper dies. Her solitary existence is interrupted, however, when she happens upon a group of Jews fleeing the Nazi terror. Stunned to learn what’s happening in the outside world, she vows to teach the group all she can about surviving in the forest—and in turn, they teach her some surprising lessons about opening her heart after years of isolation. But when she is betrayed and escapes into a German-occupied village, her past and present come together in a shocking collision that could change everything.

The Mixtape

In the span of fifteen years, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream poisoned at least ten people in the United States, Britain, and Canada, a death toll with almost no precedents. Structured around Cream’s London murder trial in 1892, when he was finally brought to justice, The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream exposes the blind trust given to medical practitioners, as well as the flawed detection methods, bungled investigations, corrupt officials, and stifling morality of Victorian society that allowed Cream to prey on vulnerable and desperate women, many of whom had turned to him for medical help.

Since the death of his twin brother, Oliver’s caught between pleasing his fans and finding himself. Emery finds him first. Emery has never felt more alone. Raising her daughter is both her pleasure and her pain as she struggles to hold on to her job as a bartender and keep a roof over their heads. With no one to help them—no support system—any unexpected expense or late bill could turn their whole world upside down. Reeling from the death of his twin brother and bandmate, rock star Oliver Smith is trying to drink his problems away. Apparently he isn’t very good at it; they follow him wherever he goes. Also in hot pursuit are the paparazzi, who catch Oliver at his lowest low. He could have walked into any bar in California, but he walked into hers. Emery helps Oliver lose the crowd, and they find themselves alone: two people whose paths are marked with loss and pain. However, they hold an unshakable hope for healing. They find solace together, but can their love withstand the world?

One day, the mother was a mother but then, one night, she was quite suddenly something else... At home full-time with her two-year-old son, an artist finds she is struggling. She is lonely and exhausted. She had imagined what was it she had imagined? Her husband, always travelling for his work, calls her from faraway hotel rooms. One more toddler bedtime, and she fears she might lose her mind. Instead, quite suddenly, she starts gaining things, surprising things that happen one night when her child will not sleep. Sharper canines. Strange new patches of hair. New appetites, new instincts. And from deep within herself, a new voice... With its clear eyes on contemporary womanhood and sharp take on structures of power, Nightbitch is an outrageously original, joyfully subversive read that will make you want to howl in laughter and recognition. Addictive enough to be devoured in one sitting, this is an unforgettable novel from a blazing new talent.

The Cult of We: Wework, Adam Neumann, and the Great Startup Delusion

by Amanda Skenandore

Based on the true story of America’s only leper colony, The Second Life of Mirielle West brings vividly to life the Louisiana institution known as Carville, where thousands of people were stripped of their civil rights, branded as lepers, and forcibly quarantined throughout the entire 20th century. For Mirielle West, a 1920’s socialite married to a silent film star, the isolation and powerlessness of the Louisiana Leper Home is an unimaginable fall from her intoxicatingly chic life of bootlegged champagne and the star-studded parties of Hollywood’s Golden Age. When a doctor notices a pale patch of skin on her hand, she’s immediately branded a leper and carted hundreds of miles from home to Carville, taking a new name to spare her family and famous husband the shame that accompanies the disease. At first she hopes her exile will be brief, but those sent to Carville are more prisoners than patients and their disease has no cure. Instead she must find community and purpose within its walls, struggling to redefine her self-worth while fighting an unchosen fate.

The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel

by Elizabeth Gilpin At fifteen, Elizabeth Gilpin was an honor student, a state-ranked swimmer and a rising soccer star, but behind closed doors her undiagnosed depression was wreaking havoc on her life. Growing angrier by the day, she began skipping practices and drinking to excess. At a loss, her parents turned to an educational consultant who suggested Elizabeth be enrolled in a behavioral modification program. That recommendation would change her life forever. The nightmare began when she was abducted from her bed in the middle of the night by hired professionals and dropped off deep in the woods of Appalachia. Living with no real shelter was only the beginning of her ordeal: she was strip-searched, forcefed, her name was changed to a number and every moment was a test of physical survival. After three brutal months, Elizabeth was transferred to a boarding school in Southern Virginia that in reality functioned more like a prison. Its curriculum revolved around a perverse form of group therapy where students were psychologically abused and humiliated. Finally, at seventeen, Elizabeth convinced them she was rehabilitated enough to “graduate” and was released.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Since October 2004, the Saw films have been almost a regular Halloween film to watch. Then there was a long hiatus before the 2017 Jigsaw film, and here we have the ninth film in this franchise being titled differently. The entire film rests largely on not figuring out who the killer is within the first ten minutes of the film. If you do then the rest of the film is quite predictable. If you don't then you are in for a decent mix of torture and minor foreshadowing. Chris Rock is not too shabby in the lead role, and he plays the honest cop role pretty well with some balanced angst. Yet the level of which this film is truly enjoyable rest upon the mystery of the killer and if you simply like seeing the unusual Saw films inventive torture devices.

Here comes the spoilers.

The film opens up with a festival and a cop chasing a purse snatcher into the subway tunnels. This is definitely not ending well for him. We immediately see the killer has a vendetta with dirty cops. Clue one is the killer was wronged by cops and with the rest of the station as the targets you can already begin to see the victims line up one by one. The tortures and 'way out' of said tortures are grim and pretty imaginative and fitting for the retribution the killer is exacting upon his targets. My issue was I guessed the killer as soon as he appeared on screen. The every scene thereafter clicked to him definitely being the killer. Him telling Chris Rock that his father was the reason he was a cop, his asking to use Chris Rock's phone, the call with the crying baby was too staged and no baby in sight,

and his death was not purposeful and actually glossed over quickly which is a huge mistake on the writer's part. They felt the tattoo reveal was enough to close the loop, but I already though he had the tattoo done to the other body. The who can it be element gone makes the film not so tense anymore. The many flashbacks to the witness being killed by a cop immediately points to a young man who was the man's son being the retribution killer long before you see it all revealed in climatic scene flashbacks. If you come for the inventive and unusual torture devices and deaths then you are getting a typical Saw franchise film. If you want a unique and thrilling 'who is it', then this is not the film for you. The only way to improve upon the film is have the new rookie be an older beat cop turned detective (possible uncle/brother of the witness who was killed) and the son also can be utilized as a killer duo since surely situations would arise they both can't be at multiple places at the same time. Create tension inside the precinct by having evidence frame Chris Rock's character as he is working to find the killer before the precinct turns completely against him. That narrative would play along with his distrust in his fellow cops and their hatred of him being a rat. It would be plausible because he has reasons to hate these cops also for letting him get shot. All while doing a better job at hiding the killer in plain sight. Alas these films are not known for great storytelling, but still the killer's identity is a plot point and should have been concealed much better to leave you guessing more. REMINISCENCE

One of the most successful actors “Hugh Jackman” is the main actor of the movie. I have a saying which says if there is a movie for Hugh Jackman then it will be a good movie. The movie is in the near future days and his job is to offer people to relive any memory they like, but with unexpected of violent crimes. He need to dive in deeper to reveal the truth.

DON’T BREATHE 2

A Blind man hiding for many years in an isolated cabin with an orphaned young girl that he raised. But when a girl is kid-napped by criminals, he has to get out of his isolated quiet life to save her. Watch the first part before going to see the second one.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD

This movie is the second part of this franchise. It has a new character with some missing ones. We are not going to see “Will Smith” as Deadshot in this movie. But we are seeing “Idris Elba” as Bloodsport and “John Cena” as Peacemaker. From my point of view I don’t think that the movie will be a hit but it will be the fourth option to watch.

SWEET GIRL

I will give you a movie to watch at home and it will be available on Netflix. It’s an Action, Drama and thriller movie that will make you enjoy your time at home. It will be released on the 20th of August Staring “Jason Mamoa” from the movie Aquaman with the second actor “Isabela Merced” from the movie Dora. PORSCHE SETS NEW LAP RECORD AT 6:43.300 MINUTES

Porsche has set a new lap record for roadapproved production cars on the 20.8-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in a 911 GT2 RS fitted with the Manthey Performance Kit. The best time of 6:43.300 minutes was achieved in the presence of a notary, with Porsche development driver Lars Kern at the wheel of the 515 kW (700 PS) 911 GT2 RS. The new Performance Kit was developed as part of a close collaboration between Porsche's engineers in Weissach and Manthey’s Nordschleife specialists in Meuspath. The circuit-focused Porsche Tequipment components are sold via Porsche Centres.

Previous record for production vehicles beaten by 4.747 seconds The plan was to beat the existing 6:48.047 roadcar record. Kern achieved this with flying colours at the wheel of the 911 GT2 RS, beating the previous time by 4.747 seconds on road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres, at an average speed of 185.87 km/h. “Our GT customers often use their cars on circuit, such as on track days,” says Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Model Lines 911/718. “The engineers at Manthey and Porsche have together developed a perfectly tuned package that allows 64

JULY 2021

the 911 GT2 RS to deliver even higher performance." Lars Kern broke the record despite high-summer conditions and a track temperature of 41 degrees. “The 911 GT2 RS sticks to the track like glue with the Manthey Performance Kit – you feel as if you’re in a racing car, especially on faster corners. It is truly breathtaking how the car puts its 700 PS down, and how incredibly well it brakes while always remaining easy to control,” says Kern.

Components precisely matched to one another The Manthey Performance Kit from Porsche Tequipment consists of chassis, aerodynamic and brake components specially developed for the 911 GT2 RS. It also includes the Weissach Package's light magnesium alloy wheels. “The individual components of the Performance Kit are precisely matched to one another. They only become fully effective when they are all installed together. As a result, the kit is only available at the moment as a whole package. Individual offerings are currently being evaluated,” says Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individualisation and Classic at Porsche AG.

The aerodynamic components are the first things you notice. Additional flaps on the front spoiler increase downforce on the front axle in combination with a carbon underbody and additional air guide elements in the area of the front wheels. Downforce increases from 49 to 70 kilograms at 200 km/h, and on the rear axle from 93 to 200 kg at the same speed. This is made possible thanks to a new rear spoiler, a modified diffuser and aerodiscs on the rear wheels. “We are proud that Lars Kern was able to improve the lap time of the 911 GT2 RS in this way thanks to the Performance Kit, developed together with Porsche and optimised in many areas,” says Nicolas Raeder, Managing Director of Manthey-Racing GmbH. The track-optimised coilover suspension benefits from the many years of motorsport experience at Porsche and Manthey. The front shock absorbers can be adjusted to three different settings and there are four settings on those at the rear. Special racing brake pads for the PCCB ceramic brake system reduce fade, while improving responsiveness and control precision. Steel-encased brake lines ensure even more direct pedal feedback. The magnesium wheels, 20-inch diameter at the front and 21-inches at the rear, offer an 11.4 kg weight saving and are available in Brilliant Silver, Black, Aurum, White Gold Metallic and Platinum. An additional water tank for spray-cooling of the intercoolers increases overall volume by approximately nine litres, thereby increasing the time between refills. “With these newly developed parts, we have made an extremely good car even better. The 911 GT2 RS with Manthey Performance Kit is perfectly tailored to the needs of those customers who like to take their cars on track, especially the Nürburgring Nordschleife. This 6:43.330 time for the whole lap is equivalent to 6:38.835 for the old shorter variant, so makes a real statement,” explains Andreas Preuninger, Vice President GT Cars. www.cpmagazine.net

CAPTAIN COOK HIGH-TECH CERAMIC

“The Pink Dial Project”

since 2010

Year 2021 marks a rebirth, around the world, as creativity and the eternal human drive for survival find their voices once again. Behind the scenes, nonetheless, diseases such as breast cancer remain a challenge, drawing on the efforts of the medical community as well as sparking numerous campaigns to ensure that the subject remains in the public eye. One such campaign is "The Pink Dial Project", organised to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in October this year. Created by the publications Time+Tide, Fratello, Eye of Jewelry, Revolution, The Rake and joint contributor Eric Ku, this special project features an auction to raise funds for research, treatment and wider awareness over the illness. High-end watchmakers were contacted, including Rado, to request a single, one-off "pièce unique" to be auctioned off at the October event, with the full proceeds then being donated to charity. Promotion for the project is a broad, multimedia affair, in print, online as well as on social media, and it will provide an excellent opportunity for favourite, global brands to publicly show their collective solidarity. Rado is proud to participate in this special auction, as its own connection with innovation and the ideals of courage and determination, are long-standing attributes of the brand. Relentless and dedicated medical research, scientific discovery and extreme journeys through rugged wilderness share many fundamentals, never far from authentic, deep courage. This one-off in pink trim, created around our Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic model, is the suitably most "badass" timepiece to match the organisers' request. We are looking forward to the auction, sure that it will be a positive, resounding success, to support this very noble cause. The Captain Cook model is one of Rado’s most iconic timepieces. Bold and expressive in design, it is also built using the most cutting-edge technologies: a matt plasma high-tech ceramic case with monobloc construction, an R734 automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve and Nivachron™ antimagnetic hairspring, as well as a contrasting matt/polished plasma ceramic-link bracelet and a titanium triple-fold clasp with Ceramos™ release. For the fundraising special event “The Pink Dial Project”, the one-off timepiece to be auctioned will feature, inside the stainless steel bezel with matt plasma ceramic insert, a stunning pink flange to honour the colour internationally associated with breast cancer. Neatly, the colour complements the ruby backplate and rhodium tone of the moving-anchor symbol beautifully. Its case-back will also carry an engraved, special decoration with the organiser's "REVOLUTION" logo and the mention "UNIQUE PIECE" to ensure that the event and charitable cause will long be remembered. Other features such as the box-shaped sapphire crystal with antireflective coating on both faces, the appliquéd indices and rhodium-coloured hands, both treated with white SuperLumiNova®, and water resistance to a pressure of 30 bar (300m) are identical to those of other Captain Cook models.

OMEGA welcomes swimming stars The clocks were ticking, but the pace was altogether slower, when two star athletes from OMEGA’s roster of swimmers took a break from the fast lanes to enjoy a relaxing tour of the brand’s legendary precision. South African Chad Le Clos and Swiss swimmer Jérémy Desplanches were celebrity guests at the Official Timekeeper’s showcase of technology in Tokyo. The visit was a double celebration for Jérémy Desplanches, as it took place on Swiss National Day and followed his recent bronze medal win in the 200m Individual Medley. Asked how it feels to join OMEGA’s roster of swimmers, which includes the legendary Michael Phelps, the Swiss Olympian replied, “I can’t tell you how proud I am. I look at these pictures of all these incredible athletes and I am honoured to be part of that line-up”. Fellow ambassador Chad Le Clos mirrored the sentiments, describing OMEGA as “a family I have been part of many years” and urged his many fans to “watch out for what happens in Paris”. During the visit, Chad Le Clos wore OMEGA’s Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Master Chronometer Chronograph in stainless steel with blue ceramic dial and bezel and blue leather strap. Jérémy Desplanches wore the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M in stainless steel with polished white ceramic dial and black ceramic bezel. Fixed to the wrist with a Swiss flag-inspired NATO strap in red and white.

HOROSCOPES (March 21 - April 19)

(July 23 - August 22)

ARIES

LEO

Feel the surge of energy in your heart, Aries. As the sun and new moon meet in your solar fifth house of love and passion on August 8, you’re ready to move into fresh territory. This is the most auspicious new moon of the year for single Aries to begin dating, put themselves out there, or pursue a connection with a soul mate. Coupled Aries can share in this beautiful period too, and you should plan some sweet and romantic events for you and your partner to enjoy. If you have children, they could require extra attention now. If you’re seeking to have another, the stars could align. Benevolent Venus darts into Libra on the sixteenth, further enhancing the gorgeous astrological weather that favors all relationships and negotiations for the weeks to come. Harmony and accord are guaranteed with her standing across the sky from you.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS August brings attention to your domestic life, Taurus. With a new moon in your solar fourth house of home and family taking place on August 8, you could see a shift in one of these areas. Some Taurus could decide it’s time to move, renovate, or fix up their living space. A family member—particularly a parent—could also be especially important now and may require your assistance. With Mercury in this same sphere until the eleventh, you could make a lot of progress. Fiery Mars ignites your solar fifth house of love, passion, and recreation all month too. This means you’ll be ready to spice up your romantic life or meet someone new. Fertility concerns are especially favored—this is the best time in two years. If you’re seeking to have a child, make this a top priority. Your ruler Venus also remains in this same sector until August 16, so if you’re single, don’t waste this incredible potential to connect with a soul mate. Electric Uranus turns retrograde in your sign on the nineteenth, meaning that you could review your progress since 2018 and decide if you want to make any changes in the months ahead. Once it goes direct in 2022, you’ll be at full power to embrace the most authentic version of yourself.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI With mighty Mars firing up your domestic sector all month, you could be very focused on a home or family situation, Gemini. This could be due to a large move, renovation, or major refresh of your living space. Conflict with a roommate or landlord could also be indicated during this time, so if this is the case, do your best to handle it with compassion and grace. August’s new moon takes place on the eighth, highlighting your solar third house of communication. You may now be focused on moving forward with a new writing, speaking, marketing, or advertising endeavor. A contract could also cross your path for you to complete. Next to note is the shift of Venus into your solar fifth house of passion on August 16. The weeks ahead are the best of the year for single Geminis to find a soul-mate connection or line up dates with prospective suitors. Coupled Geminis can also share in these beautiful vibrations by setting aside more time for pleasure and fun with their significant other.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER Powerhouse Mars is blazing a trail through your solar third house of communication this month, Cancer. This means that you’ll be especially fired up about your ideas and could be hard at work on a writing, speaking, advertising, or marketing initiative. Launch the project soon and you’ll have quite the audience ready to hear what you have to say. Next to note is a new moon in your solar second house of prosperity that dawns on August 8. This lunation can open a doorway for you to bring in more money through a raise, new job, side hustle, or lucrative client. However, don’t just wait for it to come to you—go after it! Assessing your budget will also be quite helpful. Sweet Venus shifts into your solar fourth house of domesticity beginning on the sixteenth, bringing more pleasure and harmony to your home and family affairs in weeks ahead. Use this period to buy comfortable furniture for your living space or give the walls a fresh coat of paint.

JULY 2021

Mighty Mars is heating up your solar second house of finance all month, Leo. This could increase your expenses more than in any other time within two years. You could be spending money much more quickly than you’re making it, so do your best to control your finances. However, this intense focus on money can also be harnessed to make more too, whether that’s hustling to find a better job or taking on a side gig. Also, with the sun sizzling in your zodiac sign until August 22, it’s birthday season! This is the most important time of the year to set goals and intentions for how you’d like your year to transpire. The eighth brings the most important new moon of the year because it falls in your zodiac sign and opens a doorway for you to pursue personal projects. Launch initiatives, step center stage, and draw the attention of the world. Cosmic messenger Mercury is also in your zodiac sign until August 11, giving you clarity and an extra persuasive quality.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO You are on fire, Virgo! With mighty Mars igniting your zodiac sign all month, you are unstoppable. Use this energy to assert your dominance over your entire life. Launch important initiatives, show the world your star power, and don’t settle for less than what you deserve. Having Mars in your zodiac sign can make you hypnotic and magnetic, as well as amp up your sex life. If you’re looking to energize yourself to tackle new fitness goals, get moving now. This is the most vital period in two years for you to make things happen and set up patterns for what you’d like to see manifest. Yet with the new moon falling in your solar twelfth house of rest on August 8, you could be focused on lying low, recharging, and relaxing in the early part of the month. Daydream and develop your plans, because birthday season arrives once the sun darts into your sign on the twenty-second. Venus graces you until August 16 too, so focus on recharging your beauty and attracting love into your life during this time. If you’d like to update your look, try a new hairstyle, or find a new partner, do so at this time. When birthday season arrives, you’ll feel an even further jolt of adrenaline and energy to command your world.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA With Mars firing up your solar twelfth house this month, Libra, you’re likely working on projects behind-the-scenes. This might have you working in solitude on a major endeavor, such as writing a book, developing an app, or mapping out your year ahead. Mars will join you in September, so lie low and use this energy to plot your way to victory. Also, a new moon in your solar eleventh house of friendship arrives on August 8, surrounding you with many friends and acquaintances who adore you. You might attend a magical and festive event near this time and make some new connections. This is an auspicious time to expand your personal and professional network with powerful and influential individuals. Sweet Venus, your ruler, enters your zodiac sign on the sixteenth, bringing you a magnetic glow. In the weeks ahead, focus on updating your wardrobe, refreshing your hair, or indulging in some extra pampering. Romance should glisten like gold for you now, so whether you’re single or attached, make it a priority.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO Prepare for fun, passion, and excitement, Scorpio. As your co-ruler Mars soars through your solar eleventh house of friendship, you’re likely seeing many events filling up your calendar. Many acquaintances could be reaching out to you because you’re quite popular. Whether you’d like to expand your personal or professional network, take advantage of this greater magnetism! Also, your ambitions are on your mind as a new moon in your solar tenth house of career dawns on August 8. This lunation opens a doorway for you to reach higher toward achievement, and it may deliver news of a promotion, award, media opportunity, or new job. Keep hustling and you’ll be ecstatic about what lies ahead! If for some reason you feel you aren’t in the right profession, now is the time to ask your network for recommendations on how to shift direction. Last to note in August is a full moon in your solar fourth house of domesticity that appears on the twenty-second. Last month, you had a disheartening full moon spotlighting this sector, possibly bringing some bad news around home or family. This month’s lunation is sweet as sugar, though, and it could help you improve these areas, whether through a move, renovation, or memorable event with your kin.

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS Prepare to see your name in lights, Sagittarius. Mighty Mars has just begun a biannual transit through your solar tenth house of achievement and will continue to power up here until mid-September. This means that you could see significant progress and momentum in your professional life and career. Some of you could be stepping into a promotion, launching a major initiative, or finally seeing the breakthrough you’ve long hoped for. Time is of the essence, though. You must not waste this energy. Hustle as hard as possible and you could ascend higher than ever before. Next to note is the arrival of a new moon in your solar ninth house of expansion on August 8. This lunation is eager to help you soar in new directions and integrate new wisdom into your life. If you’d like to pursue academics, a media project, or a traveling or international endeavor, now is the time to do so. Sweet Venus dances into your solar eleventh house of friendship beginning on the sixteenth, adding many invitations and events to your calendar. The universe is smiling on single Archers, too, bringing you luck in dating through your network or with online matching services.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN With mighty Mars sizzling in your solar ninth house of expansion all month, you could be hard at work on an academic, media, or traveling endeavor. If you’ve wanted to plan international business travel or immigration, now could bring the breakthrough you’ve been looking for. If you’re ready to pursue that book you’ve always wanted to write, don’t miss this opportunity to get busy! The new moon this month falls on August 8 and spotlights your solar eighth house of shared assets and intimacy. You may now be assessing the balance in your business or romantic relationship to make sure that you’re on the same page and getting everything that you desire emotionally, sexually, or financially. This same lunation is splendid for applying for a loan, venture capital, or scholarship, because the universe could tip in your favor and green-light it just for you. Sweet Venus turns a corner to enter your solar tenth house of professional achievement on the sixteenth, bringing applause, awards, and recognition in the weeks to come. Superiors, bosses, and VIPs could decide it’s time to help you rise.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS With Mars igniting your solar eighth house of debt and investments, you could be spending quite a bit of money this month, Aquarius. This could be propelling you to pay off everything you can or else creating a waterfall of wealth cascading down upon you! All of this will be determined by how hard you’ve been working up until this point in time. Also, because this same sector holds ties to sexuality and intimacy, you could be feeling the urge to merge quite intensely. Coupled Aquarians will be able to discuss and shift the balance in their relationships at this time. A new moon in your solar seventh house of partnership dawns in the sky on August 8, helping you to grow closer, make plans, or else walk away. Single Aquarians should set up dates with prospective suitors in the week after this lunation. If you’re in a relationship, some of you could move in together, get engaged, or even marry. Last to note this month is the arrival of a full moon in your zodiac sign on the twenty-second. This lunation is the second of two back-to-back full moons in your sign. The first on July 23 may have brought an ending or obstacle to your life, making it much more difficult to get exactly what you want. However, this lunation in August is splendid and dazzling, likely bringing a bounty of blessings and opportunities your way. Step into the spotlight, know what you’re after, and show the world what makes you truly unique.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES Prepare for a huge focus on relationships, Pisces. Powerhouse Mars will be blazing a trail across the sky from you all month until mid-September. This could make you feel an incredible need to work with the right partner, teammate, or collaborator now. Going solo won’t serve you well, so it’s key that you find someone who can aid you in your endeavors. However, if there are conflicts under the radar between you and a significant other, they may well bubble up and demand to be dealt with. Pisces in strong unions will make important plans, even moving in together, getting engaged, or marrying. Sweet Venus is dancing in this same arena until August 16, so by all means make love a top priority and you could be in luck finding a soul mate, especially if you’re single! Next to note is the arrival of a new moon in your solar sixth house of productivity on the eighth. This lunation could bring a new job your way, more responsibilities at your current employer, or a lucrative side hustle.
