I would not say a skin is terrible because it’s natural to have issues with your skin.

Could you briefly introduce yourself for our readers?

My name is Fajer Al-Masoud and I have been a professional makeup artist for seven years now. My college education was actually in accounting but my passion was always in the arts. Besides doing bridals and fashion makeup, I also love oil painting.

Tell us about your education.

I received my bachelor's degree in finance from Kuwait University in the summer of 2012. However, it was in 2014 that I decided to switch careers and move into makeup artistry. That is when I started enrolling in as many professional workshops as was available in Kuwait and Dubai. I also completed several online courses with world renowned makeup artists like Danessa Myrics and Harriet Hatfield. For me education is a journey not a destination, and that is why I continue to take online courses regularly to hone my skills even further and to keep up with the latest in the field of makeup.

How and when did you get interested into art and makeup?

I believe I was probably 7 or 8 years old. My mom was getting ready to go out and as she was heading to the door I distinctly noticed the shift in her eye shape and the tone of her skin. She had makeup on, but I was unaware what that was. I was however hooked to that beautiful transformation.

My interest in art came in about the same time. I grew up in a family that put more emphasis on math and science than they did on art and music. Luckily, for me I had an art teacher who was a God send, Mrs. Futooh, who noticed my passion. It was her encouragement that inspired me to keep going.

How old were you when you first began experimenting with makeup and what inspired you to do so?

I was not allowed to put on makeup until I was 12 years old. And that marked the beginning of my personal experimentation. I used to save my allowances so that I could purchase makeup items and experiment on myself. I actually remember the first time I walked into a makeup store. It was the VAVAVoom store at the Marina Mall. It was there that I bought my first Lancome lip-gloss, which I wore all the time. Even while sleeping. But It was because of the Spice Girls that discovered frosty blue eyeshadow. My face was my canvas.

Which is your personal favorite: painting or a Makeup Artist?

That is a very difficult question. Do I love my arms or legs more? I would have say I love both equally. Both require lots of creativity and that is why they hold a special place in my heart.

How would you best describe your art?

I would say it leans towards painterly and impressionistic art. That intentional caution that lies between high levels of artistry where you emphasize the accurate depiction of light and visible brushstroke marks are very enjoyable and intriguing to me.

What materials and mediums do you use for your art?

Oil paints, charcoal and pencils.

What are your favorite things about being a makeup artist?

Definitely the creativity. With makeup artistry, you are not limited to just makeup as a medium you can also use stationary, plants or even food and still manage to create a painting on a human face

What message do you like to convey through your art?

Do what you want, not what others want you to do.

How and when did you start with Makeup artistry officially?

I officially kicked off my makeup artistry career in 2014 after getting my professional certificate in makeup from the Lebanese makeup artist Majid Zahir. Shortly after that I started building my client base. My first clients were friends and family. I did their makeup for all of their special occasions, like engagement parties, weddings and birthdays. I not only did the makeup, I also hired and collaborated with photographers and models. It was in 2015 when I started getting new clients outside my circle. And so the journey began.

Staying fresh and innovative in today’s fastpaced world can be a challenge. How do you stay creative and where do you look for inspiration?

In my opinion whilst it is a fast paced world also it is saturated with many sources of information. Therefore, you can easily find inspiration from people, magazine, and online creators. I made it a habit to constantly lookout for what’s trending and new.

What is beauty for you?

Beauty is a balanced perception of things around us. It’s known that nothing is perfect yet we strive to reach perfectionism. Only by realizing that “everything carries its opposite in its composition.” is where you begin to see and appreciate beauty everywhere.

11 www.cpmagazine.net

How would you describe your signature look?

One word: Polished. Which for me means definition on the eyes and glowing skin. it’s timeless and looks flattering on everyone.

What is your favourite makeup look you have ever done?

It was a look I did in 2022 on a model named Ansab with the photographer Fatma Faraj. This was inspired by a look from Vogue Arabia March 2017 issue where Gigi Hadid wore a Fuscha scarf on her head as a hijab. I have replicated that look and loved the version that we produced because it was on a deeper skin tone.

Does everyone look better with make-up?

Everyone looks better with right makeup. Personally, I believe that makeup is just a tool to accentuate our beauty, regardless of age, race or gender. I have had clients who were as young as 14 coming out of my makeup room looking so radiant with only a few touches.

If you turn up at a show/shoot and the model has terrible skin, what do you do?

I would not say a skin is terrible because it’s natural to have issues with your skin. However, in the case of problematic skin what I do is come prepared with appropriate skincare and good coverage base products.

Has your work been published in any magazines? Not yet.

What's one beauty trend you can't get enough of right now?

Fluffy bushy eyebrows. It is so flattering and gives a youthful look.

In your opinion, what is the most important quality in a makeup artist? Flexibility. To be adaptive to criticism, feedback and new trends.

Art needs to reflect one’s growth and personal development, if you keep running in the same comfort zone no change will come your way.

What is the biggest makeup tip you think everyone should know?

Buy what you need, not what is promoted. In today’s advanced beauty industry, brands are constantly coming up with new products. They use every marketing gimmick and channel to push their products. Needless to say, this can be overwhelming to consumers and draining to their wallets. This might come as a surprise to readers but I don’t recommend buying too much beauty products.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I love reading, playing tennis and yoga.

Share with us 3 random facts about you that very few people know!

I am a certified yoga teacher. I hate eggplants, and I have never watched the Godfather.

Your message for CP magazine team.

I love the creative direction taken by Jameel Arif. I also wanted to thank you for the opportunity to be featured in your magazine. Keep up the good work.

Boost Your Health and Spirituality During Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims that requires fasting from dawn until dusk. While fasting during Ramadan is an important religious practice, it can also significantly impact one's health and well-being. From staying hydrated to avoiding certain foods, there are a variety of tips and tricks to help ensure a healthy and successful fast. In this article, we will explore Ramadan fasting tips from a health expert at RAKxa, a leading wellness retreat in Thailand. These tips are designed to help individuals stay nourished and energised throughout the month of Ramadan, while also promoting physical and mental wellness.

Fasting Tips and Benefits for Ramadan

What are some of the known benefits of fasting for the body?

There are a number of potential benefits to fasting during the month of Ramadan, both for the body and the mind, which may include:

Improved insulin sensitivity: Fasting has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, which can help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Weight loss: Fasting can also help with weight loss and weight management, as it can reduce overall calorie intake.

Cellular repair: During fasting, the body goes into a process called autophagy, a natural cellular repair process that helps rid the body of damaged cells and regenerate healthier cells.

Reduced inflammation: Fasting can also help to reduce inflammation in the body, which is linked to many chronic diseases.

Improved brain function: Fasting has been shown to improve cognitive function and memory, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Increased longevity: Fasting has been shown to increase lifespan, especially when combined with a healthier diet and lifestyle.

What are the foods to avoid whilst fasting (especially when breaking the fast)?

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. When breaking their fast, it is important to eat nutritious food that provides energy and refuels the body without disrupting

14 MARCH 2023

the fasting process. Here are some foods to avoid while fasting:

High-sugar or processed foods: These can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, leading to crashes later on.

Fried and oily foods: These can cause indigestion and bloating. Spicy and heavily seasoned foods: These can cause heartburn and discomfort during digestion.

Caffeinated beverages: These can lead to dehydration and disrupt sleep patterns.

Dairy products, including milk, cheese, and butter: These can lead to an imbalance of gut bacteria, which can negatively impact your digestive and immune systems.

Instead, it's best to break the fast with nutrient-dense and easily digestible foods such as high- and lean-protein foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Staying hydrated is also important by drinking plenty of water and electrolyte-rich fluids.

What are the foods we need to eat while fasting?

It is important to note that fasting should always be done under the guidance of a professional health advisor, nutritionist, or physician, particularly for those with underlying health conditions.

Fruits and vegetables: These are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fibre and can help keep you feeling full and satisfied.

Whole grains: These are a good source of complex carbohydrates, which can help provide sustained energy throughout the day.

Lean protein: This can help keep you feeling full and help prevent muscle loss during prolonged periods of fasting.

Healthy fats: Including healthy fats, such as those found in nuts, seeds, and avocados, can help keep you feeling full and provide essential nutrients.

Avoiding highly processed or sugary foods might be helpful, as they can cause energy crashes and may leave you feeling hungry and unsatisfied.

What can we do to avoid feeling weak while fasting?

Avoiding dehydration while fasting is essential to maintaining good health. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated:

Stay hydrated: Make sure you drink enough water after breaking your fast and before starting your next fast. Water is essential for keeping your body hydrated and feeling energetic. Eat a balanced diet: Make sure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. These foods can help you feel full and energetic throughout the day.

Avoid sugary foods: Sugary foods can lead to energy crashes, making you feel even weaker. Try to avoid them during Ramadan. Exercise: During Ramadan, a low-impact exercise can help you keep up your energy and improve your overall health. Consult a health and wellness expert: If you have any medical conditions or concerns about fasting, it's important to talk to your healthcare professional before starting. They can help you find ways to safely fast while minimizing your risk of feeling weak or unwell.

How much physical activity can we do while fasting?

As fasting can be physically challenging, engaging in low- to moderate-intensity exercises is important to ensure the body remains active and healthy.

RAKxa Wellness can provide personalised wellness programming with low-intensity activities and exercises that are suitable for those who are fasting, including:

Yoga: Our expert instructors bring you yoga classes, from gentle flow to restorative practices designed to promote relaxation, flexibility, strength, and reduce stress, which can be beneficial for overall well-being.

Pilates: Pilates is another low-impact exercise that focuses

on core strength, stability, and flexibility. It can help improve endurance and reduce stress.

Tai Chi: This gentle, low-impact martial art is a great way to improve balance, agility, and overall wellbeing.

Aquatic Exercise: Our pool is the perfect place to engage in lowimpact aquatic exercise routines that are gentle on your joints.

Stretching: Regular stretching can help improve flexibility and reduce stiffness. Our wellness coaches can work with you to develop a stretching routine that is safe and beneficial while fasting.

Meditation: While not a physical activity, meditation is a great way to center your mind, reduce stress, and help you sleep better during fasting.

However, it should be noted that consulting with a health and wellness advisor before starting any new exercise routine is crucial, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.

For this month’s story we will focus on the “On The Go: St Thomas, USVI” days of my journey.

FormerlyMe.com presents “On The Go: St Thomas,
Virgin Islands” formerlymeofficial

Saint Thomas is one of the US Virgin island sin the Caribbean Sea. With a population of over 42,000 it can sometimes feel a bit crowed on the island spanning across 32 square miles. The island was sighted by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World in 1493. Most of the land was used for sugarcane production all through the 1900s, but today you will see the rich and wealthy sailing along the coast in their mega-yachts. I got to spend a day at the capital of Charlotte Amalie.

Travel sites will say that April and May are the best times to visit due to the good weather and lack of crowds. Most people prefer to hop down there when it gets cold in the winter months. Although the average temperatures are pleasant most of the year, you may want to avoid their rainiest months of August through October. I hope to one day revisit this island and spend more time exploring the rest of the island.

I started my day with a taxi drop-off at Fort Christian next to Emancipation Park. From there you can stroll along the historic district and then walk along Main Street by the many shops and restaurants. Keep an eye out because you might just cross paths with some famous celebrities like Michael Jordan, Denzel Washington, or Kevin Bacon!

Before you leave be sure to grab a bite of the national dish of fish and fungi. Its creation comes from the time of Danish rule and no it isn’t a mushroom but rather a tender, polenta-like dumpling prepared from salted cornmeal mixed with shortening and water served with fish filets. Another Caribbean dish is Cou Cou and it is also made from cornmeal. Seafood is plentiful and everything on every menu looks so delicious.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in the past few years. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial

MAYS AL MOOSAWI

“As a female born and raised in the Arab world, we are taught to be quiet. I created a voice not just for me but all women out there who need to be heard and seen”

Mays Al Moosawi is a 27 year old visual artist from Muscat, Oman. She decided to follow her dream of being an artist instead of what was expected of her from her society. Mays completed her BA in Illustration in Coventry in the United Kingdom that led her to becoming a full time artist today. Her focus on the female figure as her signature subject matter stems from Mays' view of the society she was raised in. The stories, insecurities and challenges women from her community experience greatly impacted Mays' identity growing up, where she felt the need to provide a voice and insight to the true expression these women possess. Mays' production is characterised as spontaneous and in the moment creations guided by her emotional state of mind.

CityPages Magazine: What inspired young Mays Al Moosawy to pick up the paintbrush?

Mays Al Moosawy: I grew up in a family of creative people. I've been exposed to art since an early age, going to galleries and workshops with my mom always fascinated me. I always knew I would be an artist.

CPM: Where do you find your muse?

MAM: I find inspiration in everything I do, see and feel. Such as going out and experiencing life, seeing the beauty of nature and the fascination of the human body or feeling love, happiness or sadness.

CPM: What are your ideas surrounding femininity?

MAM: As an Arab female we can’t deny the huge changes that have happened in the past few years and we are proud of it. But as long as women will need to scream harder to

be heard this movement will not end.

CPM: The female form is celebrated in your art. Share a few words on the power of women.

MAM: Female figure slowly became the subject of my work; I found the courage to speak about my own experiences and the story of many females in my society. As a female born and raised in the Arab world, we are taught to be quiet. I created a voice not just for me but all women out there who need to be heard and seen.

CPM: Tell me about the mood painted within your latest art series.

MAM: Most of my recent work is around the topic of ‘She’s on a life changing journey’ as I recently moved to a London, to leave my comfort zone to be able to find true self and to seek inspiration

CPM: You often paint bold splashes of colour. How important is colour theory to your art?

MAM: I see colors as a reflection of my emotions and it plays a big role in my work, I think it’s the first thing that people connect to when looking at my paintings.

CPM: Do you think art is a mirror of the artist?

MAM: I always say that making art is like writing in a journal. It basically reflects every single part of the artist whether it’s consciously or unconsciously.

CPM: What do you hope people feel when they view your art?

MAM: I want every person to know that they are not alone, everything that they went through; someone else is going through right now. So instead of hiding our story – let's share it.

CPM: Describe your studio space.

MAM: My studio space is basically the only place where I truly feel disconnected from the world – it’s my safe place.

CPM: Which other great women artists inspire you and why?

MAM: I’ve been reading about Rebecca Horn recently, she’s a German artist. I love the freedom in her work.

CPM: What advice would you give to emerging female artists?

MAM: Create what you feel like, not what everyone else wants to see.

CPM: What are Mays Al Moosawi’s artistic plans for 2023 and beyond?

MAM: That’s a tough one, I would say just create more art and keep learning.

H.E. ALIYA MAWANI

AMBASSADOR OF CANADA TO THE STATE OF KUWAIT

We had the honour of meeting H.E. Aliya Mawani – the Ambassador of Canada to the State of Kuwait. Ambassador Aliya arrived Kuwait in November 2021 and since then has been very active in developing bi-lateral ties and is showing keen interest in learning more about the Kuwaiti culture and its people.

We had a very interesting discussion and took the opportunity to ask many questions to know more about her and her diplomatic career.

Art Direction & Interview: Jameel Arif (@jameelarif)

Photographer: Riyaz (@riyas.photokw)

26 MARCH 2023
27 www.cpmagazine.net

Can you please quickly walk us through your diplomatic postings prior to coming to Kuwait. I have been a Canadian diplomat for 20 years now. My first posting was to Syria and I was there from 2002 to 2005. I actually joined the Foreign Ministry on September 9th, 2001. So, my entire career has been a post 9/11 career. I think one of the reasons that's been very interesting is because we realized after 9/11 – not only in Canada but in many other countries - that there was so much about the world that we didn't understand.

It has been a period during which, unfortunately, there has been a lot of stereotyping of people, of countries, of religions, and so when I think about what draws me to diplomacy, it's about connecting with others, first and foremost. And of course, one of the ways that we connect is to get to know each other, and diplomacy facilitates this. To foster better understanding, analysis and cooperation and to breakdown some of these stereotypes, our Foreign Ministry created several new diplomatic positions in this region, in South Asia and Africa, and elsewhere around the globe. The opportunity arose for me to go abroad, and I had signaled very early on that I was interested in being posted to this part of the world, so when the option came up for me to go to Syria I jumped at it. At the time, the decision was between going to Syria or Jordan. I was attracted to both and it wasn’t an easy decision. In the end, I chose Damascus, which was a fascinating experience. I was there for three years during a really interesting period in Syria's history and met so many brave and wonderful people. And I subsequently did get posted to Jordan, so it was as though I was always meant to go there too.

While in Jordan my position was as the Head of our program for Iraq. We had an office in Baghdad, but our embassy was in Jordan so I would travel between the two countries. I did that for a couple of years and I learned a tremendous amount, including about conducting diplomacy in challenging environments. It was a very different experience from my first posting. In Syria, I was able to go everywhere freely. I would literally get in my car and drive to Aleppo or anywhere, and never really had to worry about my own personal safety. I did often worry about others, simply because of the way that diplomats were perceived at that time and the pressure that people would sometimes come under for meeting with us. Iraq was of course different because of the security situation. We were quite restricted in terms of where we could go and how we could get there and that made it harder to meet people and really get the feel of the place. But I was lucky that I actually got to do a lot and I tried to find different pathways to help gain an understanding of the people and their priorities.

One of those opportunities was doing consular work and helping Canadians in Iraq. I would meet them when they came to Baghdad from different parts of the country to get passports, DNA tests, or other kinds of services. I found it really interesting to hear from them about their experiences and what was happening across the country. Of course, the north was much more secure and we could travel quite easily in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which I did frequently. Between each posting I went back to headquarters in our capital city, Ottawa. While at headquarters, I was the spokesperson for our department – Global Affairs Canada - and the Director of Media Relations. I've also worked a lot on human rights and human security issues throughout my career, and was a director in our Foreign Minister’s office just prior to coming here.

From 2014 to 2019, I was posted to Saudi Arabia. It was a such an extraordinary time to be there. When we arrived, the religious police were just starting to have their powers

curbed, and we were beginning to see women becoming a more visible and public part of the national narrative. Over the next five years it was just change after change after change.

What was your first reaction or feeling when you heard about your posting to Kuwait and how was your reaction when you actually landed in Kuwait?

I chose to come to Kuwait and I’m very happy to be here. I feel privileged to have connected with so many warm and talented people; people with big dreams and ideas who are trying to make a difference in their spheres of influence. I've spent a lot of time in the region, as you can tell, and each place is different and unique.

Everybody asks why I was interested in coming to this country and being Ambassador here. There are a few reasons why I chose Kuwait. First of all, it was a family decision. At least in my family this is how we do it because we're a team. If I'm going to do take on this role, it's got to work for all of us because it's quite all-encompassing, and that means it impacts my husband a lot, impacts my son a lot. We knew that Kuwait was a secure place where we could find good schools and a positive environment for a young family.

Kuwait stood out in several ways. I love being on the sea. I grew up in Vancouver, so anywhere that's coastal is like home, and I had already spent a lot of time in the desert, so I thought it would be nice to have a balance. Kuwait also has an interesting connectivity with world through its trading history – including with India, where my ancestors are from, which I felt would be interesting to explore. I had met several accomplished Kuwaiti diplomats with whom I enjoyed working over the years, and it gave me a good impression.

Kuwait also has a strategic importance for Canada that is unlike any other country because it hosts our main air base in the region. It's Canada’s only military base in all of Southwest Asia and it means that this relationship is always going to matter and that Kuwait is always going to be a key partner.

Through our Canadian Forces hub here in Kuwait, we participate in regional efforts to promote security and stabilization. Kuwait and Canada, for example, have both been part of the Counter-Daesh Coalition, and Canada is part of the NATO Mission in Iraq. Our base supports Canadian Forces members doing capacity building and training throughout the region, including with the Jordanian Armed Forces and Lebanese Armed Forces. When Kabul fell into the Taliban, we evacuated close to 4000 Canadians and Afghans through our military base here, so Kuwait’s support is invaluable on a number of levels.

Kuwait is also a country with which we cooperate extensively at the United Nations and other multilateral fora. We are aligned on a great many issues, including our shared commitment to upholding international law. Since we arrived, my family and I have felt warmly welcomed and supported, and have eaten extremely well! We could certainly live without the traffic, but I suppose you can’t have everything!

As the new Ambassador to Kuwait, what is at the top of your agenda?

My priority is to deepen and expand ties with Kuwait, politically and on the trade front, as well as culturally and in the values we want to promote together. One of the ways we’re doing that is by institutionalizing regular, high-level bilateral consultations on our key priorities

28 MARCH 2023
29 www.cpmagazine.net

across a range of sectors – political, security, prosperity and development cooperation. This consistent strategic connectivity will enable us to concretely advance these priorities.

We’re working to increase our bilateral trade and get more Canadian companies into Kuwait. Kuwait is also a very important source of foreign direct investment in Canada, and we of course want to see that increase. There are key areas where Canada and Canadian companies have experience or technologies that are important for the Kuwaiti context. Agri-food and food security is a big one. It’s a pre-occupation for the whole world right now, and particularly in Kuwait. Food is something that Canada does brilliantly, right from top-notch Canadian beef and seafood, to being a major exporter of high-quality staples like wheat and pulses. It's a natural fit for Kuwait where people know quality. I mean, people come from all over the region to eat here! Our team organized a “Taste of Canada” food promotion event recently and everyone was so impressed with the taste and quality of the products. It was great to see!

Information communication technology (ICT) is another of our priority sectors. Also, oil and gas, because we too are a resource-based economy. We're committed to climate action, so we’re doing a lot on renewable energy, carbon capture and clean-tech which we want to share. We've announced ambitious targets for our climate action policies, and Kuwait has done the same, so there’s lots to collaborate on.

Healthcare is another key area of focus for us – both education and management. As you know, many Kuwaiti doctors do their training in Canada, and it’s something we’re very proud of. These professionals often get tapped for leadership roles in the health sector upon return, or start their own institutions, so the impact of this education cooperation runs very deep. Through partnerships between Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization and Canadian institutions, as well as the active role of entities like Accreditation Canada, Canada has become synonymous with the highest standards of trust and excellence in the healthcare sector.

Canadians have a really good story to tell and my team and I are committed to getting Canada even better known in this market.

Canada is a popular study abroad destination for many Kuwaiti and international students alike. What advice do you have for students who wish to further their education in Canada?

First of all, try and talk to people who have studied in Canada. I think these stories and this experience is really useful. I'm always happy to talk to people, but I think it's more important for students to speak to people they can relate to. Whether it's family members or a friend, mentor or professor. I know that often at a lot of schools in Kuwait, students tend to find out about Canadian colleges and universities if they have teachers or academic counsellors who are Canadian or have experience in Canada.

We’ve been ramping up activities to profile Canadian education. We held an education fair not long ago and we also recently had representatives of Canadian universities visit Kuwait. Last year, we created an association of Canadian alumni here in Kuwait. It’s a diverse group with a lot of insights and expertise across sectors. We’re excited to help connect people who have studied in Canada because often some really interesting initiatives can grow out of those connections, and we've been fortunate to be able to involve some of the alumni in our education promotion activities to meet and share their experience with students.

It’s so helpful for potential students to hear from somebody who has experienced Canada as student; someone who comes from a similar context to hear about what they found positive, challenging, and how they negotiated those challenges. We are fortunate in Canada to have one of the most diverse and multicultural societies in the world. All the alumni I speak to tell me about the openness of Canada, and how they were embraced by their new community. It’s something that people find incredibly positive and that stays with them throughout life, integrated into their day to day. As a result, these alumni are some of the biggest champions of the CanadaKuwait relationship.

I would also encourage students and families to study the EduCanada website (EduCanada) which has really comprehensive information about all of the schools and programs across Canada. I think it's also important to think about who you are, what you want, and how to set yourself up for success. Some students know from the outset that they want to specialize in a particular field and choose the program and university accordingly – and that’s the main driver. Some will thrive in a big city, or somewhere where they have community or family support, while others will do better in a smaller environment where it's much more student focused and there are fewer distractions. It’s a lot to think about – especially at that age – which is why it can be so helpful to learn from the experience of others.

Has it become an easier process for students to choose Canada post Covid or the system has become more difficult? As some countries are now stricter and they are filtering students. It's hard to say whether it's easier or harder. Processing times are back to normal now that COVID backlogs have been cleared. Visa processes are generally straightforward, and almost entirely online, but it’s important that people answer all the questions in order for applications to be processed. Throughout COVID and even now, what we prioritized student visa applications to ensure that students could get where they needed to go, when they needed to get there.

We’ve been working very closely with our team in Abu Dhabi, which is our regional immigration hub to make sure that it happens and it’s going well. One challenge we do notice is that sometimes students get incorrect information from a friend or non-official source, and end up having complications with visas or study permits as a result, so we really encourage students to contact their international student office, our Embassy, or Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to get accurate information.

When you speak to friends in Canada these days, is there anything particular about Kuwait that always point it out to them?

That’s a really good question. First, it’s people. I’ve met so many amazing people in Kuwait – both from here and from all over the world. Obviously, I talk to them about food because how can I not?! It’s just fantastic. The quality and the variety. And my husband will tell you that I am someone who navigates and gets to know places through food, so I love that about Kuwait!

I always tell people about the diwaniyas, which are so uniquely Kuwaiti. I've learned a lot by going and meeting people at diwaniyas. It’s so interesting to meet contacts in their family setting. You never know quite whom you will meet or the conversations you will have, but there’s always something of interest. The experience of being in a country that has gone through invasion and regained its freedom also makes for something very unique. I find that experience is present daily, and is part of the fabric and

30 MARCH 2023

identity of the country. So many people appreciate and feel connected to Canada because of our role in the liberation of Kuwait. I tell people about places like Mubarakiya, which I really love. To me it's like the heart of Kuwait City in many ways. I also share everyone how much I love being on the water here – and the beautiful islands that very few people outside Kuwait would know about. I've been learning to sail at Kuwait Sailing School - something I've always wanted to do. I also share what I’m learning about Kuwait’s biodiversity, from mangroves, to flamingos!

One of the topics that gets me most excited is talking about Kuwait women and youth. I've been endlessly impressed by so many of the women and young people that I meet here - and it's not to say anything negative about the men - but there are a lot of stereotypes about the region as you know. People are always asking me the question, “How is it to be a woman in Kuwait or how is it to be a woman ambassador in Kuwait? Across the board, Kuwaiti women are really at the top of their game, leading a lot of initiatives with an enormous amount of intelligence and creativity, and also a real rootedness and a strong sense of being Kuwaiti. Of course there are sectors where women are under-represented in leadership positions; but things are changing and it’s exciting to see that happen. I’m a big believer that having diverse perspectives, experience and skills in leadership leads to better outcomes for us all.

What do you love to tell Kuwait about Canada?

I talk about Canada’s natural beauty because it is something special. I'm from Vancouver on the West Coast, so I do get a little bit biased towards the combination of mountains and ocean, but there is such beauty across our country. Our major cities have such different personalities. Vancouver, for example, feels like a very Asian city – a bridge between continents - which I think is exciting.

Toronto is literally the most diverse city in the world and is always buzzing. Montreal has a very particular flavor – a blend of language and culture you just don't get anywhere else. Quebec City is beautifully unique. Many people say it feels like a combination of North America and Europe. The east coast and Maritime provinces have epic scenery, great seafood and a warm and inviting culture. Of course I tell people about great Canadian food – and I also talk to people a lot about diversity because, to me, it’s one of the real strengths of Canada. Our country is made-up of so many different people from so many different places, with different stories, and I think one of the things that I've appreciated about being Canadian my whole life, and we moved to Canada when I was eight is that. I can be Canadian and be everything else that I am at the same time. I'm a woman, I'm of South Asian origin, I'm Muslim, I'm a daughter, wife and mother; all of this coexists in me all at the same time. I don't feel any need to choose or prioritize one part of my identity over another in order to fit in. I can be everything I am all at once - and that to me the essence of being a Canadian.

To a new comer from Canada to Kuwait, what are the 5 places in Kuwait that you would suggest to visit?

Definitely Mubarakiya Souk and anything on the water. I think if you can go sailing, absolutely check out some of the islands. It's a wonderful experience for anyone. Try some of the museums as well; the impressive collections at Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyah and Tareq Rajab Museum, and the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre which is my son’s favourite. Something we've also really enjoyed, for example, is going early on a Friday morning to the farmers’ market in Abdali. The produce there is wonderful. It's all grown locally, and so tasty. Some farmers specialize in specific items. There is one stand that only does lemons. Three different kinds of lemons – and it’s honestly the best lemonade I have ever had (no sugar added). Everything that we tried was so delicious and fresh, and it's wonderful to see what the community has created, because this market is a local initiative.

One of my other favorite places here is Shamiyah greenhouse, which is right in the center of Shamiyah, near the Youth Public Authority building. It's a project started several years ago by a group of grandmothers who got together as they were a bit worried that their grandchildren wouldn't have green space and they were a concerned about the climate change and the environment. So, they got permission to start greening the area and it is now quite spectacular. They do permaculture, planting, education programs for kids, and all kinds of community activities. They've got a committed and growing group of volunteers of different ages, several of whom are architects or experts in permaculture. They've built a diwaniya out of recycled materials to host community workshops. We did an initiative with them last fall for Canadian Thanksgiving where we had kids come in and do crafts out of recycled materials and planting as well. The kids loved it – it made the feel so much more connected to the environment and gave them a sense of doing good. It's amazing what can be accomplished when a group of people comes together with a purpose and a vision to do something good for future generations. It can, really result in something very special.

Are there any specific challenges that you had to face as a female diplomat and do you see any improvements in this?

I'm an optimist by nature; so, I do tend to think that things are getting better and certainly from when I started in diplomacy 20 years to now, it absolutely has been the case. There has been huge progress in terms of the opportunities for women diplomats and how women are regarded in the profession. We’re no longer regarded as being suitable only for certain roles or postings. There are far more women in leadership positions and influencing policy development, which is so important. I've definitely encountered challenges, and still do, but the overall trajectory is positive. In Canada we are fortunate that our government has really prioritized having gender balance in our foreign service and particularly amongst ambassadors. As of this year 49% of our ambassadors are women – and it’s not a coincidence or accident – it’s the result of deliberate government policy to ensure that our ambassadors and diplomats reflect who we are as Canadians. So, to be part of that is pretty exciting.

We have more women in cabinet roles in Canada than ever before. Our Deputy Prime Minister and Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Defence are all women, among others. As a woman diplomat, I think there is still progress needed – in Canada and elsewhere - related to intersectionality. We have more women at decisionmaking tables, but what about diversity within that group? Intersectionality, and harnessing our layered identities can make us stronger when viewed and embraced as something of value.

As a diplomat, living and working in countries outside my own, something I notice often, whether at home or abroad, is the tendency we have to label people or put them in a category in our mind without sometimes even realizing we’re doing it. Perhaps it’s a way to try and make sense of things, but what it does is to obscure the identities and experience that are inherent in each person and it means we sometimes miss opportunities to connect or to deepen our understanding and analysis.

When someone meets me, they will often focus on my age and gender – assuming that these attributes pose an obstacle to what I do and how I’m perceived in my role, and yet, rarely does anyone ever make similar assumptions about younger male ambassadors. Nobody ever asks male diplomats about how they balance work and home life and so on. Every single female diplomat I know with a family gets asked that question. Earlier in my career, I often found myself in places where people didn’t expect me to be – a young woman of colour representing Canada and working on security issues in predominantly male environments, or in a conflict zone. On so many occasions, my legitimacy was questioned by people who said, “But you don’t look Canadian” or “aren’t you very young to be doing this?”

These experiences are frustrating but I have found that they are also opportunities, because when people are surprised or when something is unexpected, you have an opportunity in that moment to help educate or to start a conversation. One of the things that has been most important to me is allyship. Whether you’re a diplomat or in any other profession, often women’s voices and contributions don't get listened to as much as men’s which is unfortunate because we miss out on so much – so many ideas, so much knowledge. This is slowly and steadily changing, and I think one of the most powerful things that anyone can do to be an ally and help amplify

people's voices. So, if you hear a woman or anyone from an under-represented group put forward a good idea in any setting, and if it seems like it's not being listened to properly, you can restate it and give that person credit. Support them for opportunities and promotions, mentor them. I think the more that we all do this, the better.

One very simple thing that I do, and I encourage other people to do is to introduce your team properly. Let people know what their role is, that they have your trust, no matter what they look like. As Canadians, we have very diverse teams, and it’s not always what people expect, so this is really important to ensure that the team has credibility and is set up for success. I often find myself in spaces where I'm the only woman in the room. This has happened a lot throughout my career. Sometimes, it's exciting to be the first. It can also be tiring. But, there are opportunities that come with it. I think for each generation that is true. I learned a lot from my Mum and a lot from my Dad. My Mum has had an entire career of “firsts.” She is incredibly good at what she does, but what also helped is the strong support of important allies, including my Dad, the whole way through. It comes back to the team. I've been very lucky because I've had that modeled for me my whole life. No matter what the difficult situation is I've always felt like there's a way through.

What message would you give on this International Women’s Day and also what advice can you give to young people who want to pursue a career in diplomacy?

International Women's Day is an incredibly important time to recognize the contributions that women make and understand the obstacles that we still have all over the world to women’s full participation in society. To women and girls: support one another, build each other up, share stories of excellence and bravery, each and every day. To everyone, I would say, use the opportunities you have to champion gender equality in your sphere of influence –whether it’s in your family, at school, at work – anywhere. Every effort makes a difference it's a conversation or support at the right time, actively taking an interest in someone's career, protesting gender-based violence, or advocating for legal rights. It can be all sorts of things.

We will only be the best of ourselves and the best societies we can be when everyone is participating equally. And everyone can play a role in that. Everyone can be an ally and do something helpful to support women, girls, and marginalized groups to ensure that they have real opportunities. When we have partners, that is how we win. Because if I look at my own experience, I have been mentored by women, I have been championed by women, but I've also had very important champions and mentors who are men and have been instrumental to my success, starting with my own family.

Finally, your message for us at CP magazine. Well, I'm looking forward to getting more familiar with your magazine. I think it's wonderful that you're helping people to discover stories, ideas and people that they might not otherwise know about. It's such an important way to enrich community and to get to know a place. Sometimes you get inspired by hearing about what someone else is doing and it really sparks your imagination about what’s possible and what you can contribute. I'm really looking forward to see what you come up with next in terms of themes and the people and initiatives you profile.

THE MOST AUTHENTIC VIETNAM

With privacy, spectacular mountain landscapes, and authentic tribal culture, Avana Retreat is a place to escape to nature and press reset. A place to find your natural self in a tranquil environment.

38 MARCH 2023
since 2010 joseberrocoso 39 www.cpmagazine.net www.avanaretreat.com

In this quiet area, when the sunlight suffuses the whole valley, the beauty of Avana starts to unfold like an exquisite painting. Nestled humbly between the Northwest mountains, from far away, Avana Retreat is like a village of local people. Here, there is no plastic, limited waste, the staff is local. Inside Avana Retreat, there are natural waterfalls and terraced fields, where there are images of Thai and H'Mong people living their daily lives.

Avana Retreat is a 15-hectare resort in Vietnam’s Mai Chau Province, a 3.5-hour drive from Hanoi, and has the characteristic of the highland climate that is quite similar to its neighbor Moc Chau. The comfortable weather makes the retreat beautiful all year round with plum blossom season, bauhinia blossom season, rice growing season, and harvesting season. It's beautiful even in the winter when the leaves have dropped and the trees are down to their bare bones.

Each luxurious thirty-six bungalow, suite, and villa was meticulously designed to ensure privacy and comfort. The roofs of the bungalow villas are thatched, like the local stilt houses and the walls are made of earth as is common with Hmong homes. The rattan ceilings are made using a Thai weaving technique. The warm wood interiors feature local arts and crafts, including hand-drawn beeswax paintings of intricate ethnic patterns.

The lantern-lined pathways and bridges that wind through the jungle of the property highlight the location, without tampering with it. The private waterfall, which inspired the development when discovered by the founders a decade ago, is the backdrop for private dinners and intimate parties with a terraced deck overlooking the cascade.

The resort’s open-air yoga studio pavilion juts over the stream. The property’s eight-treatmentroom Orchid Spa is built along the stream, which courses through the site, and immerses guests in nature through both the therapies on offer and the lush landscape that surrounds. Spa treatments look to the landscape with local healing herbs and oils used in therapies that range from facials and body wraps through to comprehensive pampering packages like the Wild Reconnection. This signature 3-3.5 hour transformative experience includes a body exfoliation using local products, a toning and firming wrap, a relaxing facial, and a signature body massage that uses firm pressure and the stimulation of acupressure points, as well as warm Vietnamese herbal packs.

The property features four heated infinity pools with views of the sunset or cloud ceiling. The aptly-called Cloud Pool Bar, is named after this phenomenon, where the fluffy cloud cover settles just below the property for an almost other-worldly view. At this dining destination guests can enjoy a tipple, light snacks or lunch with a menu featuring local specialties, like a banana flower salad, and western-style fare like pizza, pasta, and sandwiches.

It’s rare to find a secret swimming hole that hasn’t already attracted a crowd. Rarer still is that secluded spot having all the creature comforts you may want, while still enjoying the solitude. Avana Retreat has one such place.

Carved by nature and masked by dense foliage, the Hidden Spring Lagoon is nature’s take on the private plunge pool. The rugged rim is 6 x 3.5 meters, and is filled with natural spring water fed by a small waterfall. The spring water here is crisp and refreshing. The new property, set amid the terraced rice fields and jungled mountainside, created this intimate space for guests to enjoy the natural wonder, while not negatively impacting the landscape.

The new Hidden Spring Lagoon space was recently launched and features two sunbeds, a changing room area, and towels are available post-dip. A small bar has been set up so guests can order drinks.

For those who prefer to enjoy the backdrop without getting wet, the property has launched private dining experiences. Guests have the choice of two menus, The Night Breeze or Lagoon Chill. Both are multi-course meals for a maximum of 12 guests. The fine dining menu consists of dishes like Japanese scallops and duck breast with mushroom truffle. The experience in the evening is a candle-lit affair and guests will have the lagoon to themselves.

Avana’s all-day dining restaurant, Green Chili, offers an impressive selection of dishes from pho and Australian Wagyu Beef to a line-up of vegetarian and vegan options. As much as possible the team uses local herbs, spices and vegetables. They source organic eggs from a chicken farm on property.

42 MARCH 2023

AVANA CHICKEN FARM

Avana chicken farm's idea was formed in the first lockdown during the COVID pandemic in Vietnam: to supply organic eggs to employees in the city. From 150 chickens from the first days, the farm now has more than 300 chickens that provide Green Chili Restaurant with fresh produce that sources from high animal welfare standards.

An area of 1 hectare of the hilly land is used for the farm. There is a house where the chickens sleep at night. Peach trees have been planted to shade them from the midday sun. Twice a day, Giap goes to the farm. He cuts down the banana trees that are abundant in Avana, chops their stalks then mixes them with corn powder to feed the chickens. As banana trees are very popular in the Vietnamese countryside, people often use them in livestock farming. The banana stalk is rich in potassium and vitamin B6. It can also work as an antibiotic alternative that is good for poultry. Avana maintains high standards of living for the chickens that satisfy their natural behavioral needs. They can roam freely on the land for most of the day, forage, scratch the ground for food such as worms and insects, and bathe in the dust under the sun. This stimulating environment keeps the chickens healthy and happy so that they can produce healthy and happy eggs.

Avana's guests can go to the farm to collect the egg if they wake up early enough. Follow the small path from the back entrance of the stilt house museum to the swimming pool. You will see the chicken farm on your right. Look carefully as these hens are naughty. They won’t let you find their eggs easily. Sometimes, you will find an egg on a small hole that the hen digs on the ground, next to a low bush, on the chicken house's roof, or even on the palm tree. But it's worth finding. Organic eggs taste so good. Bring the egg to Green Chili Restaurant and ask the chef to make a hearty breakfast for you. Omelet with mushroom, cheese, ham, and peppers, scramble, or fry the egg: it's all about your choice.

Vacheron Constantin is delighted to announce its Ramadan 2023 tale, ‘Into The Light’ - an illuminated journey bringing together Middle East culture and the Maison’s commitment to watchmaking excellence and finest craftsmanship.

Celebrating timeless traditions in honor of the Holy Month of Ramadan, ‘Into The Light’ is both modern and inspired from the past. The tale transports viewers on a unique and beautiful journey into a traditional lantern, the ‘fanoos’. The lantern opens its door to reveal a hidden Arabian city located in the desert lit by the glimmering moonlight. Navigating through the city, viewers arrive in front of a door designed to resemble a watch caliber showcasing the incredible craftmanship and finishing

of the timepiece. The caliber is seen shinning and the beautiful light that comes out of it starts to illuminate the entire city and bringing life under the night sky.

Viewers are then transported back outside the city, all the way through the ‘fanoos’ door showing the lit lantern that projects a beautiful mashrabiya pattern on the walls, inspired from Islamic art, a beautiful symbol that reflects the spirituality and radiance of Ramadan. As the light is being unlocked at the completion of the pattern, the viewer understands the strong correlation between Islamic architecture, artfulness of mashrabiya patterns, and elements of a Vacheron Constantin caliber.

51 www.cpmagazine.net “Live What You Love”
Photographer: Riyaz (@riyas.photokw)

Please introduce yourself to our readers. Hello CP reader! I am Ghadeer Dashti from Kuwait. My fulltime job is in the accounting sector. I loved drawing since childhood and I taught myself to draw and until now I’m discovering myself in this great field.

Tell us about your education. I got my diploma in accounting and completed my academic career and got my bachelor’s degree in finance from Gust University in Kuwait.

What inspired young Ghadeer to pick up the paintbrush?

When I was a child, I used to see my father drawing and sketching in an amazing wonderful way. I was inspired by him and he encouraged me to continue.

How would you best describe your style of art?

I can’t say that I discovered my style in drawing yet. But I can say that I’m in the midst of experiments. Drawing is a big word and requires effort with passion to discover yourself in it.

Where do you take inspiration for your work?

Well, sometimes beautiful face, sometimes a sight that attracts me, feeling that overwhelm me or a

situation, anything that catches my eye can be a source of inspiration.

What is your favorite medium for producing your art?

Now, I am between oil and acrylic and sketching. I’m in the process of learning a new drawing method called alcohol ink art.

Describe your studio space?

Since I paint in my house and there is no vacant room, I have allocated a special corner in the house to practice my hobby. There is nothing that stops the painter from his passion.

What artistic process goes into creating your work? Can you take us through your process from concept to final work? Each piece and each painting has its own beautiful details according to its story or topic. Some paintings takes days only and some takes months of design and creation. Each painting has its own character that distinguishes it.

What are some of your biggest achievements so far?

One of my greatest achievement in my current life is that I achieved a balance between my main job and my hobbies and raising my children.

52 MARCH 2023
53 www.cpmagazine.net

How do you overcome creative blocks?

This is the most problem a painter goes through. Because without creativity nothing can be accomplished. For me, going to gym do some sports is helpful. Meditation, reading a book or some time going to galleries to be inspired from other artists also helps.

What message do you like to convey through your work?

Let your art be as unique as you and your opinion is only one that matters. So, don’t worry about what anyone else thinks about.

What are you currently working on?

Now I’m working on a landscape painting in acrylic colors, size 120 x 120.

What is the biggest challenge of being an artist and a mom?

My biggest challenge I face is time. Since I am an independent mother and single parent and working full time. Time is an issue or a challenge for me.

What makes a great artist?

To be a great artist, you have to love your work, feel the passion towards it, and do not allow anyone to frustrate your hopes and your view of your work. Even if you make mistakes, adore your mistakes and learn from them.

Do you think art is a mirror of the artist?

Of course, art is literally a mirror of the artists mind. A reflection of the artist imagination at work.

How and where do you sell your work? Do you also take commissioned work?

Yes, I have sold some pieces, but not yet accepting any special requests for painting.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I have some other hobbies such as sports reading books, shooting and cycling.

What is your favourite genre of music?

I am attracted to the beautiful melodies of the old and new generation. Let’s say I adore Frank Sinatra and overwhelmed by Naika and I love songs of Majid al Mohandas.

Your favourite quote?

My favourite quote would be “Live what you love”.

Your message for our readers.

My message for any artist is to take your time, make mistakes and don’t immediately try to become successful. Be concerned of doing good work and make right choices.

What are your artistic plans for 2023 and beyond?

My plan for 2023 is to invest more time in developing my hobbies, interests, and self-development and to be the best version of myself as an artist.

Your message for us at CP magazine. Thank you for having me. It was a pleasure and honour to be interviewed by CP magazine.

NEW MARCH RELEASES

Stash: My Life in Hiding

A propulsive and vivid memoir—in the vein of Drinking: A Love Story and Somebody’s Daughter—about the journey to sobriety and self-love amidst addiction, privilege, racism, and selfsabotage from the host of the popular podcast The Only One in the Room.

After years of hiding her addiction from everyone—from stockpiling pills in her Louboutins to elaborately scheduling withdrawals between PTA meetings, baby showers, and tennis matches—Laura Cathcart Robbins settles into a complicated purgatory. She learns the hard way that privilege doesn’t protect you from pain. Facing divorce, the possibility of a grueling custody battle, and internalized racism, Robbins wonders just how much more she can take.

Now, with courage and candid openness, she reveals how she managed to begin the long journey towards sobriety and unexpectedly finding new love. Robbins harrowingly illustrates taking down the wall she built around herself brick by brick and what it means to be Black in a startingly white world. With its raw, finely crafted, and engaging prose, Stash is the story of just how badly the facade she created had to shatter before Laura could reconnect to her true self.

The Love Wager

Two people make a wager on who can find love first, not realizing what they should be betting on is each other, in this new romantic comedy by Lynn Painter, author of Mr. Wrong Number. Hallie Piper is turning over a new leaf. After belly-crawling out of a hotel room (hello, rock bottom), she decides it's time to become a full-on adult. She gets a new apartment, a new haircut, and a new wardrobe, but when she logs onto the dating app that she has determined will find her new love, she sees none other than Jack, the guy whose room she snuck out of.

After the joint agreement that they are absolutely not interested in each other, Jack and Hallie become partners in their respective searches for The One. They text each other about their dates, often scheduling them at the same restaurant so that if things don't go well, the two of them can get tacos afterward.

Spoiler: they get a lot of tacos together.

Discouraged by the lack of prospects, Jack and Hallie make a wager to see who can find true love first, but when they agree to be fake dates for a weekend wedding, all bets are off. As they pretend to be a couple, lines become blurred and they each struggle to remember why the other was a bad idea to begin with.

Sea Change

A novel about a woman tossed overboard by heartbreak and loss, who has to find her way back to stable shores with the help of a giant Pacific octopus. Ro is stuck. She's just entered her thirties, she's estranged from her mother, and her boyfriend has just left her to join a mission to Mars. Her days are spent dragging herself to her menial job at a mall aquarium, and her nights are spent drinking sharktinis (mountain dew and copious amounts of gin, plus a hint of jalapeno). With her best friend pulling away to focus on her upcoming wedding, Ro's only companion is Dolores, a giant Pacific octopus who also happens to be Ro's last remaining link to her father, a marine biologist who disappeared while on an expedition when Ro was a teenager.

When Dolores is sold to a wealthy investor intent on moving her to a private aquarium, Ro finds herself on the precipice of self-destruction. Hello

Beautiful

(Oprah's Book Club):

A Novel by Ann Napolitano

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him. So it's a relief when his skill on the basketball court earns him a scholarship to college, far away from his childhood home. He soon meets Julia Padavano, a spirited and ambitious young woman who surprises William with her appreciation of his quiet steadiness. With Julia comes her family; she is inseparable from her three younger sisters: Sylvie, the dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book and imagines a future different from the expected path of wife and mother; Cecelia, the family's artist; and Emeline, who patiently takes care of all of them. Happily, the Padavanos fold Julia's new boyfriend into their loving, chaotic household.

But then darkness from William's past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia's carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters' unshakeable loyalty to one another. The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations. Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most?

Vibrating with tenderness, Hello Beautiful is a gorgeous, profoundly moving portrait of what's possible when we choose to love someone not in spite of who they are, but because of it.

The Angel Makers: Arsenic, a Midwife, and Modern History's Most Astonishing Murder Ring by Patti

The Angel Makers is a true-crime story like no other--a 1920s midwife who may have been the century's most prolific killer leading a murder ring of women responsible for the deaths of at least 160 men.

The horror occurred in a rustic farming enclave in modern-day Hungary. To look at the unlikely lineup of murderesses--village wives, mothers, and daughters--was to come to the shocking realization that this could have happened anywhere, and to anyone. At the center of it all was a sharp-minded village midwife, a "smiling Buddha" known as Auntie Suzy, who distilled arsenic from flypaper and distributed it to the women of Nagyrév. "Why are you bothering with him?" Auntie Suzy would ask, as she produced an arsenic-filled vial from her apron pocket. In the beginning, a great many used the deadly solution to finally be free of cruel and abusive spouses.

But as the number of dead bodies grew without consequence, the killers grew bolder. With each vial of poison emptied, a new reason surfaced to drain yet another. Some women disposed of sickly relatives. Some used arsenic as "inheritance powder" to secure land and houses.

Lyons combines leading behavioral science with actionable advice on how to communicate with intent, think critically, and open your mind and ears to the world around you. Talk less, get more. But following their debutante ball Rose is suddenly talking about marriage, and Eddie is horrified.

When Eddie meets charming, renowned poet Nash Nicholson, he invites her to his crumbling Gothic estate in the countryside. The entourage of eccentric artists indulging in pure hedonism is exactly what Eddie needs in order to forget Rose and finish her novel.

But Eddie might discover the world of famous literary icons isn't all poems and pleasure . .

Now she’s telling her own story, in an intimate and eye-opening tale about the triumphant and tricky moments of a career in entertainment.

I Am Debra Lee is a page-turner, filled with deeply personal revelations, juicy celebrity intel, and electrifying behind-thescenes stories that reveal how she went from a girl raised in the segregated South to leading the first Black company traded on the New York Stock Exchange and how she juggled social responsibility while managing a company targeted toward the Black community. MARCH 2023

2019’s Shazam! Gave us a much lighter and fun take on the superhero with almost every power at their disposal, but with a kid being the one possessing these powers. Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and Shazam (Zachary Levi) did a great job bringing the awe of possessing superpowers and the naivety of still being a young person in a superhero body. The first film did a good job reflecting the story of foster kids in foster homes and by the end of the first film all of the foster kids became superheroes. Needless to say, a sequel is expected to bring us the continuation of the story with the entire family fighting to save the world.

Here comes the spoilers.

The film opens with beautiful shots of Athens Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. Two mysterious figures wearing ancient solider armor walks up to the case containing a broken magical staff and they reveal themselves to be daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso Lucy Liu). They take the staff while killing all the tourists by turning them to statues. In Philadelphia, Billy Batson and his foster brothers and sisters are all doing their own thing and Billy rallies them to go save people on a bridge before it collapses. They regroup afterwards at the Rock of Eternity to go over the event and see how they can do better. This is when each member shows lack of interest and they are more concerned about their own personal interests. This leads Billy to push harder for them all to stick together and by pushing so hard indirectly pushes them all away. Billy gets called out for his fear of abandonment. As a foster kid he had to deal with his parents abandoning him and as he is soon to become 18 years old he fears by aging out of foster care he will not have a home anymore. This theme of abandonment and siblings drifting apart was never fully developed because the writers had way too much going on and rushed the dynamics here.

The daughters of Atlas are then revealed to be three and not just two. With their younger sister Anthea who is posing as a high school student and crosses paths with Freddy. Freddy has a disability and uses a walking crutch, and when bullied he stands up to them and earns the respect of Anne (Anthea). He takes Anne to the school rooftop to impress her with him knowing a superhero (which is himself). Suddenly Hespera and Kalypso appear and steal Freddy’s power. Shazam and the other siblings fly to his rescue, but the daughters of Atlas fly

away leaving the city covered in an impenetrable dome. Shazam and the other siblings go back to the Rock of Eternity and in a magical library to consult a magical pen named Steve who seems to have all knowledge and information. They have Steve send a letter to the daughters of Atlas requesting a trade for Freddy. During the meetup to discuss a trade they end up fighting and capturing Hespera. They imprison her in a cell at the Rock of Eternity, but unbeknownst to them that was her plan to get a seed of life which was contained within an apple they tossed around in the library. She takes it and escapes.

The next several scenes are just as predictable as anyone could imagine. One of the sisters turns on the other and tries to destroy earth. Billy has to reveal to his foster parents who he really is and makes a sacrifice to save his family. The film rushes the ending and spends way too much time on flying through fire sequences and placing gratuitous advertising for Skittles for anyone to care (seriously “Taste the Rainbow”). It becomes a laughingstock of a film and quite frankly I am at a loss of how to make this film better. The villains were never shown how their lives were lived for thousands of years watching the humans take over the earth. No empathy there. No time to fully showcase what each and every member of the family was dealing with. For one character he is hinted at being gay, but when he comes out to his family they are all like “yeah we know”, and right there a tremendous moment is wasted. Every theme they hinted at was never fully delivered upon. Therefore I cannot even provide a way to improve this film other than to spend an extra 8 minutes of film time delivering on these themes.

Although I felt the first film had some potential and had its heart in the right place, this film misses that heart by a long shot. The danger gets turned into a farce and the stakes are never raised to a level where an audience can care about any character or relationship. Even the level of campiness and PG-13 rating, this film just falls flat. Too much going on and a too neat of a bow tie ending. No consequences. No real stakes at hand. No complex emotional themes delivered. Just a waste of film and great actors like Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. The two writers should be banned from ever writing again for the DC Universe.

Starbucks Achieves First LEED Platinum Certification

in GCC

STELLA McCARTNEY CELEBRATES RAMADAN WITH ‘EMERALD CAPSULE’

Adding another important milestone to a long list of achievements under Alshaya's partnership with Starbucks. The Starbucks store at KAFD, Riyadh has become one of the first few Food & Beverage stores in the GCC region to attain this prestigious accolade. Alshaya Group and Starbucks have achieved an historic milestone with KAFD Starbucks becoming one of only six stores globally to achieve LEED Platinum certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Having scored 81 points, the store is also recognised as being the third LEED platinum interior design and construction (ID +C) retail store in the GCC, making it one of the greenest cafés in the GCC.

The award-winning store was recognised for incorporating ecofriendly materials including recycled terrazzo and local marble, to create natural patterns throughout the store interiors. It also includes a biophilic design with a collection of green walls, natural trees and planters that provide a sense of calm and relaxation to customers. The store also scores well on the use of water-efficient indoor fixtures, the elimination of CFCs, energy modelling compliance, the use of energy-efficient equipment and lighting fixtures, and the use of chilled water from the base building using compliant refrigerant.

Commenting on this distinguished achievement, Andy Holmes, President of Alshaya Starbucks said: “This is a prestigious recognition for us as sustainability is at the core of our business. Earning this important certification demonstrates our tremendous green building leadership and is another testimony of how we act to adopt sustainably best practices at every stage of our processes. The Starbucks store in KAFD is a prime example of how innovative work can create local solutions that contribute to making a global difference.

“Sustainability is a key element of our approach to design at Starbucks. Our teams have worked hard to design, construct, and operate our stores to meet LEED requirements on a global scale, as we continue to push the envelope of what our stores can be in the future. I am proud of this recognition, and I would like to thank all of those who have made it possible.” further commented Andy

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and an international symbol of excellence. Through design, construction and operations practices that improve environmental and human health, LEED-certified buildings help make the world more sustainable. LEED certification is awarded for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in areas including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Porsche: Fourth generation of the Cayenne also to be built in Bratislava

Albrecht Reimold, Board Member for Production and Logistics at Porsche, knows the strengths of the multi-brand plant in Bratislava first-hand. From 2012 to 2016 he was the Chairman and Member of the Executive Board for Technology at Volkswagen Slovakia. “The plant in Bratislava has done outstanding work in recent years and has received several awards. The future Cayenne will be the first all-electric SUV to be manufactured there. I’m sure that the team there will be meticulously prepared and will get the new generation to the starting line – when the time comes – in characteristic Porsche quality,” says Reimold.

The Cayenne has been stamping its mark on the sporty SUV segment for over 20 years. Its success remains undimmed. With 95,604 delivered units in its anniversary year of 2022, the Cayenne posted the highest demand among all Porsche model lines. Since production began in 2002, the Cayenne has been closely associated with Bratislava. In the early days, the painted bodies were sent from there to Leipzig. With the third generation of the SUV, production moved entirely to Bratislava in 2017. Since then, the site has produced models with combustion engines and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Porsche AG is laying the groundwork for the further electrification of its model lines: The sports car manufacturer has decided to manufacture the future all-electric Cayenne at Volkswagen Slovakia’s multi-brand location in Bratislava. After the Taycan (since 2019), the Macan (in 2024) and the 718 (middle of the decade), the Cayenne will become the sports car manufacturer’s fourth model line with an all-electric powertrain. Porsche has already announced a further all-electric SUV above the Cayenne for the second half of the decade. That model will be produced at the Porsche factory in Leipzig.

The plant in Slovakia is currently preparing for the start of series production of the extensively upgraded new Cayenne. Following its launch in 2017, Porsche has now significantly upgraded the third generation of the SUV with far-reaching measures affecting its powertrain, chassis, design, equipment and connectivity. In addition to realigning the drive portfolio with combustion engines and hybrid drives that are as powerful as they are efficient, the engineers at the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach made major revisions to the Cayenne’s chassis system. The aim: to achieve an even wider range between the typical Porsche onroad performance, long-distance comfort and off-road capability.
