Always seeking remarkable gastronomic experiences, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer is joining forces with Em Sherif, a renowned restaurant group born in Beirut, which set up residence in Monte-Carlo. Following on from Harrods in London, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo welcomes Em Sherif in Europe with a unique concept combining Em Sherif Restaurant, Em Sherif Café and Em Sherif Sea Café.

Founded by Mireille Hayek in 2011 to celebrate the authenticity, generosity and refinement of Lebanese cuisine and culture, and after a great success in Egypt, KSA, UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait (has two locations in Kuwait, Em Sherif Café at the Avenues Mall and Em Sherif Restaurant at The Palms Beach Hotel and Spa), Em Sherif will be taking up residence in Monaco under the leadership of Yasmina Hayek, the daughter's founder and chef trained at the Paul Bocuse Institute. The family business joins the eminent history of the Principality to the greatest delight of those who love cuisine that comes from the heart.

Ms. Hayek specializes in restaurant menu creation, execution, and team training. Additionally, she oversees the company’s social media and content creation strategy as well as quality control of all branches of the restaurant group. Moreover, Hayek manages the continuous international expansion of the restaurant concepts in the MENA region such as the UAE, Egypt, and Kuwait, and others as well as most recently in London’s Harrods and Monaco’s Hotel de Paris.

Yasmina is a young, talented and versatile chef with a unique blend of experience both within the constructs of her ever-growing successful family business as well as academic and professional training at some of the world’s best culinary institutions and establishments. Being raised in a family of restaurateurs, Ms. Hayek has always regarded food as an integral part of both her life and greater Lebanese culture. She prides herself in defying the challenges and stereotypes of being a female in a male dominated industry.

Our lifestyle editor, José Berrocoso, got the chance to sit down with Yasmina Hayek. Find out more about her new project in Monaco and her success within the culinary world.

When the authenticity and generosity of Lebanese cuisine meet the luxurious soul of Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, a unique alchemy occurs.

CityPages Magazine: Em Sherif is a family affair. As the daughter of Mireille, the Founder, What’s your fondest food memory?

Yasmina Hayek: I’ve got three brothers, so together with my parents we were always a family of six at the dinner table, and we used to sit down together every lunchtime and every evening to an absolute feast. My mother used to love hosting themed dinner parties at home. She loved having everyone over for a big meal, and she always prepared everything herself from scratch. That was something I really admired growing up – and still do today.

CPM: When did you start coocking, and why?

YH: At the beginning I wanted to be a doctor, as I always loved Science. Then I realised that I needed to find another kind of lab to work in, a happier lab. That’s why I chose to be in the kitchen. It’s a place where you can express yourself, create, grow, research etc… I also love travelling, sharing, and meeting new people and I believe that food is the perfect vector.

CPM:What is your favourite Middle Eastern dish to make?

YH: Specifically my mother’s Siyyadiyeh! Siyyadiyeh is an extremely complex dish but very flavoursome. Made out of burnt onions infused with fish stock and spices, the stock is then used to hydrate the rice. The cooked rice is then served with crumbled fish, crispy onion and a burnt onion sauce. I used this traditional technique and recreated my own version of siyyadiyeh by stuffing a whole sea bass with the onion rice, and decorating it with crispy onions and aromatic herbs.

CPM: Do you prefer traditional Middle Eastern dishes or modern/fusion Middle Eastern dishes?

YH: Traditionally refined Lebanese food is what I prefer.

CPM: Em Sherif first opened in Lebanon in 2011 and has since proven extremely popular in Cairo, Riyadh, Kuwait Qatar, UAE and Bahrain all flying the flag for Lebanese culture. What has reception been like in London and Monaco so far?

YH: EM Sherif flies the flag for Lebanese culture. No matter where you are in the world, that is what you’ll feel when you come to eat in an EM Sherif restaurant. Everything from the service to the food, decor, clientele...it all has close ties to Lebanese life, and our hearty, authentic cuisine.

CPM: Your career has seen you go from the Institut Paul Bocuse to EM Sherif Monte-Carlo at the Hôtel de Paris MonteCarlo: how do you feel about the unique path you’ve taken?

YH: Working with Mathieu Pacaud gave me confidence in my abilities. Jean-François Piège taught me how to keep going. Then I joined Rasmus Kofoed, the triple-Michelin-starred chef and winner of the Bocuse d’Or. He taught me his amazing philosophy, based on precision and meticulous attention to detail in presentation and flavours. That level of perfectionism is key. I’m inspired and always learning from the people I cross path and work with every day.

10 OCTOBER 2022
11www.cpmagazine.net

CPM: How does the menu in London and Monaco differ to the Middle East? Have you added or removed certain dishes, or included some European twists?

YH: Since Lebanese cuisine is based on acidity, we refined our recipes by creating new ones that are appreciated by everyone, and we also refined our platings. Wherever you go in the world, you’ll find Em Sherif’s classics, such as hummus mutabbal, fattoush tabbouleh etc… and you’ll find other dishes that are suitable for the country that we are implemented in. In London, we did our fish skewers and fish shawarma, lamb chops, Wagyu beef skewers.

CPM: What, other than the unique menu items, is the secret to Em Shareif success?

YH: Cooking with love, and cooking with care, I say that to myself every day. Particularly because Lebanese food truly comes from the heart.

CPM: How do you develop new dishes? What is your take on Lebanese cuisine?

YH: Our food is sophisticated, and we use techniques that have been forgotten. People of our generation just don’t cook like that anymore. We are carrying on traditions in our own way, with our own personal touch, by creating authentic food served in generous portions that are meant to be shared.

CPM: What matters more – taste or presentation?

YH: Presentation is pleasure for the eyes and is the first impression one will have but at the end of the day, if the taste is not there then presentation is useless. And what makes a great menu is variety; whether it concerns the taste or the product, every dish needs to stand out.

CPM: How would you describe the atmosphere at your outlets in London and Monaco?

YH: Em Sherif flies the flag for Lebanese culture, which you can taste, see, hear and feel in the food, décor, music and warm, friendly environment. Em Sherif is also like a big family. We want our guests to experience this unique atmosphere.

CPM: Why do you think Monaco has such a special relationship with Levantine cuisine?

YH: Monaco is very close to Lebanon in terms of ecosystem, as we’re close to the Mediterranean Sea. And we had the chance to have a place in our new home at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo Monaco and partner with SBM. Monte-Carlo is truly a magical destination, a great challenge.

CPM: What do you think makes London such a destination for top-level chefs?

YH: Customers nowadays have great knowledge and awareness regarding the food scene and at Em Sherif, we have to stay relevant for them. We always strive for perfection and consistency in whatever we do.

12 OCTOBER 2022

CPM: What trends are you seeing on London and Monaco’s dining scene?

YH: People are looking to have more than just food. It’s about the ambiance, the music, the lighting, the energy - It’s a matter of creating a soul.

CPM: What are you working on next?

YH: Em Sherif has several openings scheduled in the GCC region and beyond, including Em Sherif Restaurant in Oman and Dubai, Em Sherif Sea Café in Riyadh & Kuwait, and Em Sherif Café in Baghdad, Oman, KSA, Bahrain, Jordan, and Irbil. Beside London at Harrods, Monaco at Hotel De Paris, Em Sherif is opening soon in Greece, France and Switzerland.

Finally, Em Sherif recently launched its newest concept " Em Sherif - The Deli " which offers ready to eat items from its extensive menu. The first outlet started operating in Harrods London in January 2022 and the concept is expected to rapidly expend throughout all the territories in the coming few years.

THE RIGHT THING TO DO

How does the world come to order?

Ethics is the code of morals practised by people. Morals are personal principals of what people believe right and wrong.

Ethical values help guide us to deal with dilemmas that eliminate behaviour that do not confirm to our sense of right and wrong. Moral principals are crucial in this world so humans would be able to live amongst each other in a civilized, equal social life.

Creating a moral conscience towards others in society is based on social and cultural norms taught through their upbringing. It differs with each household according to which moral aspects is their priority. Generally, they all focus on healthy relationships and love above all. When there is a common ground, there will be less likelihood to have friction between them.

Ethics and the law together regulate order. They act as a

guide for right and proper conduct in a person’s daily activity. There is an extent of international ethical obligation in an era of globalization, expecting fairness, truthfulness, tolerance, equality and non-violence. Ethical standards respected everywhere results in the well-being of the nations.

The golden rule is to treat people the way you want to be treated. So how you are brought up and your moral foundation will determin how you treat others. One’s potential to spread goodness is a step to make the world a happier place by encouraging others to repeat what they have experienced themselves leading to a more positive community.

“Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” The Prophet Muhammed PBUH

Consider the outside world’s view and bare in mind that we are among many. Ultimately aiming to achieve a righteous life.

16 OCTOBER 2022

Back in October of 1810, a celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria and Princess Therese Von SachsenHildurghausen was such a festive event that people decided to have it every year. Over time however it got moved earlier in the year to avoid the usual rainy weeks in October. Now it runs more in September and end sthe first Sunday in October. Munich sees about 6 million people each year from all over the world. I made my way to Munich to take in the sights and sounds of Oktoberfest.

The easiest comparison I could make is to American State Fairs. There are parades, a carnival, and lots of food and beverages everywhere you look. Even with rainy weather, people are out an about without worries over the rain. Most vendors speak a little English, but it doesn’t hurt to know a few words in German. Hachen is chicken, Rind is beef, and Schweine is pork. I highly recommend trying a Rindwurst sandwich and pair with a halfchicken to really hit the spot.

Even with the rain and massive crowds, I was able to have a fun experience at Octoberfest. It seems the Germans are ready to be back outside and are celebrating life in these post-quarantine era. I am happy to see that myself. Festivals are a great way to get out the house and have some fun. Whether you enjoy carnival rides or just people watching while eating some good food, Oktoberfest has something for just about everyone to enjoy. Until next time… Auf Wiedersehen!

Most of the tents that are setup along the fairgrounds are open to the public. Just note there are often long lines to get inside, and tables are reserved for those who have purchased tickets in advance. Some people book their tickets up to six months in advance! I also highly recommend you book your hotel or AirBnB at least 6 months or more in advance as with 6 million people coming into town the rates go up fast and availability goes down even faster.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021-2022. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial

TANIA GRACE KNUCKEY

Award-winning textile designer Tania Grace Knuckey created her first scarf collection in 2015 as a one-off – mainly with friends and family in mind, and now she can’t stop! Fantastical creatures, exciting graphic colour mixes, and natureinspired motifs are the focal elements of her playful creative world of silky scarves that are as much heirloom pieces of art as they are wearable accessories, with a contemporary and truly uplifting spirit.

She graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2009 with a Cum Laude BA in Design and from The Royal College of Art London in 2012 with an MA in mixed media textiles. Her artistic practice is playful with an unapologetic bold use of colour, and yet behind this aesthetic, more often than not, is a level of seriousness borne out of steady research. She seeks to surprise at times, to titillate perhaps, but always to unsettle the norm, questioning conventional notions of form and function.

Tania is winner of numerous prizes including the Marianne Straub Travelling Scholarship from the Royal college of Art in 2011, the 'The Future of Beauty' prize in 2012 awarded by International Flavours and Fragrances (IFF) as well as the first prize for Best Interior Fabrics awarded by Textprint. She was awarded an atelier space at the Maison des Arts du Grütli from 2016 to 2019 by the city of Geneva and in 2019 she was selected by the Istituto Svizzero for a seven month residency in Milan. She is a guest editor of Make Space Journal and a member of the association Exodes Urbains.

Words: JOSÉ BERROCOSO

Our lifestyle editor, José Berrocoso, chats with Tania Grace Knuckey to find out about the scope of her exciting creative world in a new chapter for fashion & design.

CityPages Magazine: Working backwards a little, could you tell us a bit about you? How did you come to do what you do today? What routes has your career taken?

Tania Grace Knuckey: I am a multi cultural designer based in my hometown of Geneva, Switzerland. I was inspired by my brother’s love of art to pursue a creative career and study design at the Design Academy of Eindhoven. Once in design school I wanted to specialise in something more artistic and less technical so I went on to do a Masters in textile at the Royal College of Art in London.

CPM: Does drawing play an important role both in and outside of your working life?

TGK: All of my work begins with ink and paper. Drawing is primordial to my process! Not only do I love drawing but it helps me think and develop ideas further. If I am not drawing for work, then I am sketching for pleasure. I try to keep my work as hand

made as possible before anything is digitalised. Nothing beats paint, pencil and charcoal marks for perfect imperfections!

CPM: What did your creative journey look like and how did you begin designing textiles?

TGK: Textiles felt like a good marriage between the world of design and that of art as it is versatile and swings into many fields ranging from fashion to interior, industrial and artistic whilst being both two dimensional and three dimensional. The diversity of techniques is varied and fascinating to me.

CPM: What does a day look like in your studio? Do you have a routine to follow or do you work in a more ad hoc way?

TGK: Lists! I am a very organised person and segment my days and weeks with several tasks oscillating between working for clients and developing my own line of scarves, carpets, blankets

22 OCTOBER 2022
23www.cpmagazine.net

and developing new projects. I also take meditative breaks to refresh myself… it’s important not to get stuck in a rut!

CPM: Can you take us through your design development steps and which is your favourite and why?

TGK: I love every step of designing from concept to finalisation as all aspects allow me to work at varying speeds and in different manners. The diversity keeps me on my toes: the concept development is exciting, the finetuning is challenging, the production is scary and the finalisation is a relief! A roller coaster of emotions!

CPM: Where do you get new inspiration from?

TGK: Everywhere! Listening to people’s conversations, books, galleries even music. Both humour and things that irritate me inspire me as I feel the need to respond to them creatively.

CPM: How does your personality translate to your designs?

TGK: I am serious about being playful! My work is as eclectic and diverse as my interests and background!

CPM: Can you share your go to online resources for textile design trend research and inspirations?

TGK: I might be revealing my age here… I can share a book about colour I currently find very inspiring: The Secret Lives of colour, by Kassia St Clair.

CPM: What do you find most rewarding, as well as most challenging, about your work?

TGK: The freedom to work on topics I find fascinating, the liberty to express myself and the people I get to meet are a massively rewarding. I sometimes I feel that the work load and efforts put into the creative process is not respected as much as in other professions.

CPM: If you were to start your creative journey all over again, would you do something different and if so what would it be?

TGK: I think that if I knew how hard it would be I might not have started in the first place! I would therefore rather remain ignorant and trek on! Perhaps that the only thing I would change is to worry less about the outcome and more about the development of my work.

CPM: What skills do you think are necessary to have in order to become a textiledesigner that specialises in developing fabric prints for the fashion market?

TGK: Flexibility, openness and a a defined aesthetic as well as awareness about the environmental impact of textile.

CPM: What is your all-time favourite design from your own collection?

TGK: My first collection of scarves is special because of what it represents whilst my Asafo scarf collection is very dear to me because it is inspired by my Ghanian roots. I don’t produce anything that isn’t meaningful and a reflection of where I am at in my life… my newest pieces are my favourite pieces!

DAMAS JEWELLERY BRINGS GRACEFUL CREATIONS TO THE UAE WITH MIKIMOTO

Damas Jewellery, the Middle East’s International house of jewellery design, has once again set to raise the bar for luxury fine jewellery. Introducing the enchanting creations of Mikimoto in an exclusive and private session with Sotaro Yamaguchi, General Manager of the brand, on history, artisanry, and the elements of fine pearl jewellery in Bayt Damas. The pristine Mikimoto pearl symbolizes everlasting love, loyalty, and wisdom, capturing the hearts of high jewellery aficionados across the region.

Since 1893, unlocking the secret of culturing pearls, the title “The Pearl King” was given to Kokichi Mikimoto, who dedicated his life in the pursuit of lustrous perfection. A visionary, entrepreneur and alchemist of the sea, his quest for serene beauty and mission to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls, has earned Mikimoto the reputation as Japan's representative jeweller.

Intricately designed with skill and grace, Mikimoto celebrates its heritage as the pioneer of cultured pearls with an unparalleled commitment and dedication to quality. The quality of a pearl is

determined by several criteria, including its size, shape, color, lustre, and thickness of the nacre. Only Akoya cultured pearls with the highest quality and lustre can be bestowed with the title of a “Mikimoto Pearl”.

Each collection tells its own story, weaving a narrative of subtle luxury and understated charm. Inspired by the beautiful city of love, “Les Pétales Place Vendôme”, is an enchanting collection designed to accentuate the inner beauty of each independent woman with 18-karat white gold diamond encrusted rose petals and white south sea pearls. “Jeux de Rubans” is inspired by ribbons with the graceful creations resembling calm waves mirrored in their soft curves. The “Pearls in Motion” collection is versatile, playful, and functional, offering an infinite number of styling possibilities.

Bringing Japan to the Middle East, Mikimoto’s sophisticated designs will now be available — exclusively under the Bayt Damas portfolio — to the Gulf’s community of elite luxury enthusiasts.

THE QUOIN

Photography: Matthew Williams

Designed by Method Studios, Method Co’s in-house design firm, in collaboration with Philadelphia-based firm Stokes Architecture, the property is a reimagination of the city’s historic Security Trust & Safe Deposit Company building, a two-story Victorian Romanesque brownstone dating back to 1885 hat was originally designed by acclaimed architect Frank Furness. The new luxury hotel will feature 24 hotel rooms inspired by its storied location with a nature-filled identity and Victorian-era influenced palette, in addition to three distinct food & beverage concepts

45www.cpmagazine.net

Located on the corner of Sixth and Lower Market Street in the heart of Wilmington, Delaware’s reimagined historic district, The Quoin is the latest hotel from Method Co., the leading Philadelphia-based hospitality company, in partnership with Delawarebased real estate developer, The Buccini/Pollin Group, Inc. (BPG). The hotel is housed in the former Security Trust & Safe Deposit Company Building, a four-story Victorian Romanesque brownstone dating back to 1885 that was designed by the renowned Philadelphia architect, Frank Furness (of Frank Furness & Evans Architects). The Quoin features 24 luxury hotel rooms, a lobby cafe & bar with fireplace, a ground floor restaurant with courtyard dining, a lower-level cocktail lounge, the city’s first rooftop bar and event space, plus a gym and retail space, adding a new and lasting hospitality landmark to the fabric of downtown Wilmington. Pronounced “coin,” the name is derived from the Old French word meaning “corner” or “angle,” honoring the legacy of the original building, while also referencing the legacy of the original banking house.

46 OCTOBER 2022

The Quoin’s contemporary interior design was carefully considered by Method Studios, Method Co.’s in-house design firm, in partnership with Philadelphia-based Stokes Architecture. Inspired by the aesthetic of the Brandywine Valley, Method Studios reimagined the building’s existing natural materials by layering in modern handmade décor, floral motifs in the fabrics and wallpapers, the clean lines of modern Shaker-influenced furniture, and an overall subdued, earthy color palette influenced by original Victorian-era paints dating back to 1820. With an eye for detail across all touchpoints and a high level of quality in craft, the property boasts 24 luxury guest rooms and suites that pay homage to the building’s original architecture with restored details such as arched windows and moldings, blended with a nature-inspired identity plus curated vintage furniture, and psychedelic hand-drawn floral illustrations. Each room has a unique layout, but all are furnished with luxurious king beds, walls draped in wallpaper by Farrow & Ball or Little Green, and dining & desk chairs designed by Gubi. Decor includes a mix of artwork featuring photography by David Burnett and pieces from House of Spoils, along with curated vintage works sourced from the Brandywine Valley, while vintage rugs from Old New House tie each room together.

47www.cpmagazine.net

Upon entering The Quoin, guests are greeted at reception with intricate floral wallpaper outlined in metallic gold and a custommade credenza in contemporary hues and taupe mulled leather. To the left of reception is a retail area featuring some of Method’s favorite boutique brands: Kapital socks of Japan, Sabah Shoes of Turkey, Aesop toiletries, Quoin inspired merchandise, and a selection of curated books and media. To the right is an antique Malayer that blends the space into the adjoining lobby and cafe. The lobby features Lawson Fenning sofas, Lina swivel chairs, a handstitched leather Adnet-inspired Crillon chair, and a cotton shaded lamp by Santa & Cole.

Method Co., who are also behind the nationally acclaimed Philadelphia restaurants Wm. Mulherin’s Sons and HIROKI, operate The Quoin’s three distinct food & beverage concepts: The Quoin Restaurant & Bar, Rooftop at The Quoin, and Simmer Down. The Quoin Restaurant & Bar is a handsome neighborhood restaurant located in the lobby offering wood-fired fare inspired by the cuisine of Southern France and Northern Italy; The Rooftop at The Quoin serves as the perfect spot for happy hour, social gatherings, and light fare; and the hotel’s craft cocktail lounge, Simmer Down, emphasizes a low and slow atmosphere, featuring the space’s original brick ceiling and a custom, room-spanning painted mural by the Reverend Michael Alan.

Method Co. has crafted an end-to-end hospitality experience within The Quoin that leverages its storied urban location and lends itself to a country environment with a nature-inspired brand identity. The result is a luscious and intriguing hotel property contributing a new, elevated level of distinction and boutique luxury to Wilmington’s hotel and restaurant scene, serving as an idyllic homebase for travelers and locals alike from which to explore the city’s nearby restaurants and bars, entertainment venues, and various outdoor attractions.

"A bag, a moment in a woman's life"
50 OCTOBER 2022

CityPages Magazine: Have you always been interested in fashion?

Curra Chávarri: Somehow fashion and elegance has always been present in our lives, not only as a way of presenting ourselves to others but also as a way of life. Our mother, an interior architect by profession, has always instilled in us good taste in both form and substance: "class is worn on the outside as well as on the inside", she used to tell us. At the same time our father fostered in us traditional values but always with the idea of being independent women and educated us with the main goal of being well trained in a dignified profession.

So, we have spent more time studying, training, and working hard in each of our professions than delving into the world of fashion. But it is true, that as women we like to keep up with the latest trends without losing sight of the basis of timeless elegance, which is after all the most practical thing for working women.

In my case for example, I spend long hours of the day dressed in green pajamas, so when I have the opportunity to go out to an event, I don't have time to investigate for the latest fashion at that time. I use the basics of always, that if, accompanied by some jeweler of my grandmothers or inherited complement, because we really like to remember our grandmothers wearing their memories, certainly is what makes us feel special, those accessories with family history.

As a child I liked, like so many girls, to rummage through my paternal grandmother's dressing room, and she was very amused to see me with her heels and accessories. My dearest grandmother was a woman who wore the best Spanish fashion designers, (Balenciaga being her favorite...) so we learned for our early ages in our childhood’s games what the most exclusive fashion was. In fact, I must say, my grandmother was like a princess when I saw her appear wonderful with her incredible dark hair that she gathered in a low bun, and her blue eyes,

always beautiful, always elegant.

Cristina Chávarri: I preferred to tangle among our great-aunt's things, rackets and hockey sticks that were authentic relics. An elite sportswoman of the thirties, Pepa Chávarri, as she was called. She was in possession of a privileged physique driven by a brave heart that always pushed her in search of victory, although her fame was due to tennis, her other sports were skiing and hockey, and in both she reached an international level. At the age of 17 in the 1920s and 1930s, she was the champion of a more masculine and casual style of elegance, always with her pegged trousers, impeccable shirts, and moccasins. Pepa was one of the few high society women who, at that time, wore trousers and rode a motorbike and was dedicated to international sport in a city like Madrid. With such a young grandmother, with whom we shared every weekend, it was difficult not to be interested in the world of fashion, even in our childhood.

CPM: How did you get into the industry?

Cristina Chávarri: It was not easy to enter the exclusive world of leather goods manufacturing in Ubrique, a village in the mountains of Cadiz in Spain, the cradle of leather goods manufacturing worldwide for centuries, where the big names in the production of handbags and luxury goods meet.

If you are not Carolina Herrera or Loewe and you show up there with your idea, your designs, coming from a world of syringes and respirators, more than a good laugh and a pat on the back is not usually offered to you. But finally, and after knocking on many doors, we found Laura, heiress of the family business of leather goods manufacturing in Ubrique, who with her fashion design training in Madrid and Milan has accompanied us throughout the creative and manufacturing process from the first sketch to the moment the collection left the factory, the whole process being meticulously supervised by her. Laura has collaborated with the

52 OCTOBER 2022

best international designers and brands, working hand to hand with them and living the manufacturing process day by day. She has been our first De Chávarri woman although she prefers to stay away from the media so as not to damage the other brands she collaborates with.

Curra Chávarri: When we met, she told me “Make me believe in your project",

I knew immediately what kind of woman she was, a determined woman, and very committed, I could see it in her eyes, someone who puts heart into her work and the courage to get involved in a small project, at least humble in its conception, but a project with soul.

I knew I had to give her more than a project, more than sketches and models of bag designs, more than a list of ideas, more than numbers... I knew I had to conquer her soul as a woman, which was not difficult because the connection with her was almost immediate, we both know what moves us and what is worth fighting for. Yes, I would give meaning to the project, and she would give soul to the bags.

CPM: What made you decide to start a brand focused on handbags and leather accessories?

Curra Chávarri: Given the difficulty in finding a work briefcase that was not too masculine and that was practical enough to carry all our personal and work accessories and that was at the

53www.cpmagazine.net

same time an elegant bag, we decided to launch ourselves into the study and development of our first "doctor" model to which we added a document holder following the line of practicality without renouncing sophistication. Our first Victoria collection, still in development, represents a woman who works hard without having to give up femininity and elegance, so while our father instilled in us the value of effort and a job well done, our mother told us "Even if one day you're untidy, if you carry a good bag and a good pair of shoes, you'll look good” , and it is true, sometimes I go with a ponytail and comfortable sports shoes, but I go out in the street with my black "Doctor" and, in addition to feeling that I carry everything I need for my day, comfortably. It is here when I feel with a very particular and differentiating touch of style and the truth is that I like that feeling.

Cristina Chávarri: Our idea is that each model represents and celebrates all the aspects and moments of a woman's life, and with this idea in mind we will be launching our collections, soon we will have our backpack for that dynamic and practical woman who does not want to give up the classic, as well as our collection of bags for the summer of 2023 that will represent our more supportive side. Our motto is "a bag, a moment in a woman's life".

CPM: Tell us about your debut collection, Victoria, what is the inspiration behind it?

Curra Chávarri: The collection is inspired by the famous Greek sculpture "Winged Victory of Samothrace" which we had the opportunity to see for the first time when we were very young on a trip to Paris. We saw in warm marble the representation of a woman stepping forward with overwhelming firmness and determination, in a brave and defiant attitude towards life, of titanic strength but also of unparalleled sensuality, incredibly delicate and harmonious, with her belly representing the center of her whole universe, representing all women since the beginning of time, I saw in her imposing solitude her wings open, dazzling in an attitude of victory but also of freedom.

Cristina Chávarri: We were told that women could not fly but there was that sculpture proving that yes, women have wings and that we can fly. I knew that that vision would accompany me for the rest of my life and that every woman can be her own winged victory, majestic at the top of a staircase, powerful in her solitude, imposing in her sensuality, victorious in her freedom.

CPM: Can you describe De Chávarri aesthetic and which of your bags would you describe as your “signature”?

Curra Chávarri: I think that De Chávarri's aesthetic gives a nod to the past, to the classic that always endures, with an Art Deco touch from the 1920s, all adapted to the modern era in which we live. De Chávarri wants to give a nod to the style of the woman of the 1950s, who, today, rushes out into the street to face the challenges of the 21st century.

The flagship bag of the collection is the Doctora maxi work bagbriefcase, because the brand was born with it, and it represents all our values. The "doctor" work bag from the Victoria collection was the brand's starting point, as it responded to a need, that of carrying a work briefcase without renouncing a woman's femininity.

CPM: What makes a De Chávarri handbag special?

Cristina Chávarri: Our DeChavarri bags are meticulously designed to meet the expectations of elegance and practicality, handmade in Ubrique, an artisan village in the mountains of Cadiz in Spain, cradle of the best leather craftsmen for centuries where the best national and international leather goods firms meet. The leather is carefully selected according to the highest standards of quality, resistance, and beauty. The brooches of our different models are designed by Angela Segimon, a jewelry designer of great renown in Spain, and are made exclusively in hand-polished brass and bathed in white bronze with gold

micron plating, which gives our bags the name of jewel-bag.

CPM: Where are your bags made? The quality looks beautiful.

Curra Chávarri: Thank you very much indeed. Ubrique, the village of leather. Situated at the foot of the spectacular Sierra de Grazalema, between rocks and cork oaks, one of the so-called white villages of the mountains of Cadiz appears: Ubrique. This small Spanish village is par excellence, the best place in the world to manufacture handmade leather goods. One of the basic pillars of De Chávarri is excellence in craftsmanship, and we are undoubtedly very proud to be able to count on the best artisan hands in the world to make our bags. For the people of Ubrique, leather is not a job, it is the life of Ubrique. Almost 80% of its inhabitants work directly or indirectly in the world of leather.

CPM: Where do you seek design inspiration?

Curra Chávarri: We find inspiration in the classics of the 50s adapted to today's world, in work well done, in the passion for beauty, in women, which is the essence of De Chávarri, because for women, life is a challenge.

CPM: What kind of person has a De Chávarri handbag?

Cristina Chávarri: Our models represent the women who use our bags, for us, they are the models of our bags but also of our values. A woman who embraces all facets of life without giving up any of them, who maintains her essence as a woman, her taste for beauty, and her femininity, which is not at odds with a life of obligations and responsibilities. A strong woman who, no matter how many times she falls, always rises victorious with her wings spread. A woman who allows herself to dream and who fervently fights for her dreams.

CPM: Apart from the handbags and clutches (These are great!), do you have plans to expand your range into other categories?

Curra Chávarri: Thank you very much, it is a real honor that you like them! Absolutely, De Chávarri allows itself to dream and fights to achieve its dream, we are currently in the process of manufacturing our "Doctora" backpack, a totally versatile model

54 OCTOBER 2022

that can be used as a handbag, shoulder bag, cross body, and backpack, with a very elaborate interior with compartments for all personal and professional belongings, it will be on sale this Christmas. We will also develop the mini doctor.

In the same way we are already thinking about the spring summer season 2023, with incredible and functional baskets made in Ecuador and Morocco and decorated inside with African fabrics brought from my trips to Cameroon.

Cristina Chávarri: DeChavarri's dream is to grow in an endless number of models of handbags, wallets, adapted to all the situations of a woman's life, ranging from the most sophisticated evening bag to the university student's handbag, a Satchel that we are already designing to a summer raffia bag, without forgetting our more solidary side. Our motto is "for the woman who walks and dreams".

CPM: Your first campaign features many professional women. Why did you choose them? Who are they?

Curra Chávarri: We didn't want the beauty of the object to prevail, only the beauty of the models, we wanted to give life to our brand with real women, we believed that they would represent what is behind the bag, the effort, the courage, the passion. We had to give a message, not only that we were designing and making handbags, but that we were doing it to give value to the world of women in all facets of their lives. They are women from our environment, from very different professions and occupations and we continue to count on future women for the next launches, it is the most beautiful and fun thing about the brand, it is so easy to find extraordinary women, because every woman has something extraordinary about her. Over time we would like to create an ever-wider community of women where we all share the same passions, no matter how different our lives, our occupations, languages or countries, where we all have a place to show our talents and share our concerns and why not, a guide for young women.

CPM: Are you working on any special new projects? Curra Chávarri: Personally, I continue to train myself to provide my patients with anesthetic quality based on excellence, looking after their lives in the operating theatre and taking care of the smallest details of post-operative comfort, while I continue with my charity trips. Cristina is the manager of a clinic, to which she devotes most of her time alongside her work at De Chávarri.

Cristina Chávarri: We don't rule out starting a line of footwear in the future, given the close relationship I have with orthopaedical foot surgeons. It would be very interesting to create the "most comfortable shoe in the world without losing elegance" ... we are already working on different lasts carefully designed by foot surgeons and specialists adapted to the different pathologies and ailments of the clients .... But, the future will say.

NEW OCTOBER RELEASES

Making a Scene

Growing up in the friendly suburbs of Richmond, Virginia, Constance Wu was often scolded for having big feelings or strong reactions. “Good girls don’t make scenes,” people warned her. And while she spent most of her childhood suppressing her bold, emotional nature, she found an early outlet in local community theater—it was the one place where big feelings were okay—were good, even. Acting became her refuge, her touchstone, and eventually her vocation. At eighteen she moved to New York, where she’d spend the next ten years of her life auditioning, waiting tables, and struggling to make rent before her two big breaks: the TV sitcom Fresh Off the Boat and the hit film Crazy Rich Asians.

Through raw and relatable essays, Constance shares private memories of childhood, young love and heartbreak, sexual assault and harassment, and how she “made it” in Hollywood. Her stories offer a behind-the-scenes look at being Asian American in the entertainment industry and the continuing evolution of her identity and influence in the public eye. Making a Scene is an intimate portrait of pressures and pleasures of existing in today’s world.

And There Was Light: Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle by Jon Meacham

A president who governed a divided country has much to teach us in a twenty-first-century moment of polarization and political crisis. Abraham Lincoln was president when implacable secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions inextricably bound up with money, power, race, identity, and faith. He was hated and hailed, excoriated and revered. In Lincoln we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations.

At once familiar and elusive, Lincoln tends to be seen in popular minds as the greatest of American presidents—a remote icon— or as a politician driven more by calculation than by conviction. This illuminating new portrait gives us a very human Lincoln— an imperfect man whose moral antislavery commitment was essential to the story of justice in America. Here is the Lincoln who, as a boy, was steeped in the sermons of emancipation by Baptist preachers; who insisted that slavery was a moral evil; and who sought, as he put it, to do right as God gave him light to see the right.

Visual Thinking: The Hidden Gifts of People Who Think in Pictures, Patterns, and Abstractions by Temple Grandin

A quarter of a century after her memoir, Thinking in Pictures, forever changed how the world understood autism, Temple Grandin—the “anthropologist on Mars,” as Oliver Sacks dubbed her—transforms our awareness of the different ways our brains are wired. Do you have a keen sense of direction, a love of puzzles, the ability to assemble furniture without crying? You are likely a visual thinker.

With her genius for demystifying science, Grandin draws on cutting-edge research to take us inside visual thinking. Visual thinkers constitute a far greater proportion of the population than previously believed, she reveals, and a more varied one, from the photo-realistic object visualizers like Grandin herself, with their intuitive knack for design and problem solving, to the abstract, mathematically inclined “visual spatial” thinkers who excel in pattern recognition and systemic thinking. She also makes us understand how a world increasingly geared to the verbal tends to sideline visual thinkers, screening them out at school and passing over them in the workplace.

Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising a beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in, and taking over her father's beekeeping business.

Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can she trust him completely . .

Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent.

Mistakes Were Made

From the critically acclaimed author of Something To Talk About comes a sharp and sexy rom-com about a college senior who accidentally hooks up with her best friend’s mom.

When Cassie Klein goes to an off-campus bar to escape her school’s Family Weekend, she isn’t looking for a hookup—it just happens. Buying a drink for a stranger turns into what should be an uncomplicated, amazing one-night stand. But then the next morning rolls around and her friend drags her along to meet her mom—the hot, older woman Cassie slept with.

Erin Bennett came to Family Weekend to get closer to her daughter, not have a one-night stand with a college senior. In her defense, she hadn’t known Cassie was a student when they'd met. To make things worse, Erin’s daughter brings Cassie to breakfast the next morning. And despite Erin's better judgement—how could sleeping with your daughter’s friend be anything but bad?—she and Cassie get along in the day just as well as they did last night.

Nineteen Ways of Looking at Consciousness

Despite decades of research, remarkable imagery, and insights from a range of scientific and medical disciplines, the human brain remains largely unexplored. Consciousness has eluded explanation.

Nineteen Ways of Looking at Consciousness offers a brilliant overview of the state of modern consciousness research in twenty brief, revealing chapters. Neuroscientist and author

Patrick House describes complex concepts in accessible terms, weaving brain science, technology, gaming, analogy, and philosophy into a tapestry that illuminates how the brain works and what enables consciousness. This remarkable book fosters a sense of mystery and wonder about the strangeness of the relationship between our inner selves and our environment.

Self-Portrait with Nothing

Abandoned as an infant on the local veterinarian’s front porch, Pepper Rafferty was raised by two loving mothers, and now at thirty-six is married to the stable, supportive Ike. She’s never told anyone that at fifteen she discovered the identity of her biological mother. That’s because her birth mother is Ula Frost, a reclusive painter famous for the outrageous claims that her portraits summon their subjects’ doppelgangers from parallel universes. Researching the rumors, Pepper couldn’t help but wonder: Was there a parallel universe in which she was more confident, more accomplished, better able to accept love? A universe in which Ula decided she was worth keeping? A universe in which Ula’s rejection didn’t still hurt too much to share? Sometimes living our best life means embracing the imperfect one we already have…

Our Missing Hearts

Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic—including the work of Bird’s mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet who left the family when he was nine years old.

Bird has grown up disavowing his mother and her poems; he doesn’t know her work or what happened to her, and he knows he shouldn’t wonder. But when he receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find her.

60 OCTOBER 2022
Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult, Jennifer Finney Boylan
since 2010

I grew up with idolizing Superman. The king of superheroes. It seems that beyond the small screen DC efforts like Smallville, Arrow, etc. that big screen films haven’t done as well as Marvel films. DC often gets criticized for being too “soft” on violence, and horrible CGI (e.g. Superman’s mustache issue). Now they hope that bringing in the biggest action star on the planet, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, will turn DC’s comic films franchise around. With a director whose resume for action is a list of Liam Neeson forgettable thrillers, and a team of three writers who had some early critical success are given the task to shake things up a bit for DC. Although this film has its moments, it still falls way short in delivering epic film that sets a bar higher for comic book films to aspire to.

Here comes the spoilers.

The film opens with an origin story of Teth-Adam rebelling against slavers and a crown of Sabbac. Teth-Adam gains his powers. Then cut to present day where a group of people with a woman named Adrianna are trying to evade past a group known as the Intergang (Bad Guys). Teth-Adam is woken up and he goes on a killing spree in perhaps the most memorable sequence of the film next to the post credit scene that gets the biggest cheers from the audience. He saves Adrianna from an advanced ethereum missile which knocks him unconscious.

Next we get introduced to the Justice Society of America (JSA) and the film acquaints us with Dr Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher

(Noah Centineo), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Hawkman (Aldis Hodge). Adrianna’s son is kidnapped and the JSA and Adam have to team up to rescue him. Adam and Hawkman share most of the intense action sequences with a brutal fight and some comedic moments of rescuing people thrown into the sky. There is a flashback scene where Adam reveals how he came to get his powers and then through vengeance and rage destroyed the city of Khandaq. Adrianna believes there is good inside of Adam and she convinces him to work with the JSA to find her son.

Now the issue I have as I normally do with all superhero films is the villain. Give us a montage of the history of the family of heirs to the ancient king of Khandaq. Show their plight to survive with generation after generation building up the resources to come back to obtain the crown of Sabbac. With a knowledge of history and love of his family may be the driving force for the villain. Just as the loss of his family was a driving force for Black Adam which fueled his rage. The villain’s rage can be fueled likewise. Perhaps a lesson in letting go of anger could be more profound if written in subtlety. Also the lesson of feeling weak and small then being given tremendous power could apply to our villain as well as superhero. The old adage of “If you want to see a man’s character, give him power” would apply with that theme.

DC needs to focus on building up great villains that can survive a film or two. Let them sometimes be truly villainous so when our heroes manage against all odds to defeat them it is earned. Let audiences fear and dread that their heroes can lose. Think of how Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame got a lot of things right. One they had a villain audiences feared and also empathized with somewhat. Consequences such as The Hulk’s arm after using the gauntlet, and of course Tony Stark’s sacrifice. These are elements that make for epic superhero films and DC just needs to get some better writer’s to bring these elements to the screenplays.

Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

ROAD TO DAKAR 2023

Audi RS Q e-tron E2

Lighter, More Aerodynamic And Even More Efficient

The Audi RS Q e-tron won its first desert rally in Abu Dhabi back in March 2022, after a discipline-defining debut at the 2022 Dakar Rally in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and now the next evolution is ready. The Audi RS Q e-tron E2 presented itself significantly improved for the 2022 Morocco Rally in September, as it gears up its preparations for the 2023 Dakar Rally.

During the 2022 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia, the season-opening round of the World Rally-Raid Championship, the Audi RS Q e-tron won four stages and clinched a total of 14 podium wins in the daily classification, the only entry to feature the innovative power delivery system. The RS Q e-tron exceeded expectations during its debut Dakar Rally participation and this year, the team is looking to go in even more prepared for what’s to come, with a lighter, more aerodynamic and upgraded energy converter like never before. Following these changes, the RS Q e-tron now bears the abbreviation E2, and is reminiscent of the legendary Audi Sport quattro in its final development stage for Group B rallying in the 1980s.

“We’ve managed a good debut at the Dakar with the Audi RS Q e-tron and even our first stage victories in a motorsport discipline that is new to us,” said Rolf Michl, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH and responsible for motorsport at Audi. “The entire team is working well together and, as is usual at such an early stage, the drivers, codrivers and technicians quickly agreed on the next development targets. We have summarised the result in a new evolution package – the RS Q e-tron E2.” This marks the beginning of the second phase of the development programme, and October will see Team Audi Sport preparing for the 2023 Dakar Rally with the new prototype in Morocco.

Carsten Bender, Managing Director of Audi Middle East, said, “We are excited to make history once again with the new Audi RS Q e-tron E2. The team is looking forward to building on our success from our debut run with four stage wins. This time, starting in Morocco and on to Saudi Arabia for the Dakar Rally 2023. Progress has taken on a new shape and we are looking forward to witnessing Audi Sport take over the desert again.”

66 OCTOBER 2022

“The Audi RS Q e-tron E2 does not take a single body part from its predecessor,” explained Axel Löffler, Chief Designer of the RS Q e-tron. The cockpit, which was previously narrowly recessed towards the roof, is now significantly wider and the front and rear hoods have also been redesigned. Given that the first generation of the RS Q e-tron was overweight, it was necessary to save several dozen kilogrammes, as well as lowering the vehicle’s centre of gravity.

The aerodynamic concept in the area of the body below the hoods is completely new too. Audi has now dispensed with the part of the fenders that was behind the front wheels and formed the transition to the door. As a result, the designers saved more weight and optimised the airflow. “The aerodynamic aspect should not be underestimated in desert rallying,” says Löffler. It was possible to reduce the overall aerodynamic drag by around 15 percent. The top speed remains limited to 170 km/h as per the regulations.

The electronic control system of the complex electric drivetrain proved its worth in the first rally events, and the Audi and Q Motorsport rally team gained valuable experience. The electric drivetrain of the Audi RS Q e-tron E2 comprises an energy converter consisting of an internal combustion engine and a generator, as well as a high-voltage battery and two electric motors on the front and rear axles.

The Audi drivers Mattias Ekström / Emil Bergkvist, Stéphane Peterhansel / Edouard Boulanger, and Carlos Sainz / Lucas Cruz can look forward to their new workplaces. The displays are still in the driver’s field of view and located in the centre console in the usual style, and the central switch panel with its 24 fields has also been retained. Following initial testing led by Arnau Niubó Bosch, Head of Test Engineering, Audi Sport unveiled the RS Q e-tron E2 in Neuburg an der Donau on September 1.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES (March 21 - April

Although Mercury’s retrograde journey through Virgo concludes on October 2, its rocky vibes will continue to be felt throughout its post-retrograde shadow period, threatening to leave you overly stressed and disorganized until the sixteenth.

Luckily, Aries, you’ll have a chance for a reprieve through love’s healing touch as the sun makes its way through harmonious Libra. Lean in to these dreamy vibes by embracing plenty of self-care and nurturing your body, especially on days that feel particularly tense. Romance will also flourish under this luminary placement, so be sure to let down your guard with that special someone.

And you’ll have a cosmic excuse to prioritize your own needs when the full moon manifests in your sign on October 9, sharing connections with the healing asteroid Chiron and sweet Venus. Use this energy as motivation to embrace forgiveness, especially when it comes to yourself and your closest companions. Unfortunately, tension could arise within your romantic relationship, and you might need to fight to maintain balance in the dynamic.

TAURUS (April 20 - May

You’ll be in a body-conscious and peaceful mood throughout muchof the month, Taurus, as the sun and Venus move through harmonious Libra and your solar sixth house. This cosmic climate will inspire you to embrace wellness, helping you reconnect with your health. Use this energyto reevaluate your lifestyle choices and personal habits, identifying and remedying any behaviors or situations that have unnecessarily elevatedyour stress levels. You might also find that eating more healthful foods andexperiencing restorative sleep are more of a priority as you strive to becomea more efficient version of yourself without adding more responsibility toyour life.

On October 23, you’ll notice some serious shifts when the sun and Venus move into transformative Scorpio, activating the sector of your chart thatgoverns love. This cosmic climate will funnel some seriously intense vibes to your closet relationships, helping you pull back the curtain when itcomes to your nearest and dearest. The relationships you form right nowwill also feel deeper and more meaningful, though you’ll want to watchout for dramatic encounters or toxic situations that could lead to trauma bonding. On the plus side, this energy can also help you break away from anyone who hasn’t been contributing to your emotional or mental well-being, giving you the strength and motivation to walk away from such dynamics.

GEMINI (May 21 - June

Though Mercury’s retrograde journey through Libra and Virgo might have cursed you with a healthy dose of drama and emotional upheaval last month, you can breathe a sigh of relief when your planetary ruler heads direct once more on October 2. However, Gemini, you could feel as though you’re still struggling to tidy up any messes this planetary backspin contributed to until this cerebral celestial body clears its post-retrograde shadow on the sixteenth. Use this time wisely by issuing any apologies you owe, reorganizing your space and finding your center so you can enjoy what remains of Libra season.

You’ll notice a shift as the sun and Venus enter Scorpio on October 23, activating the sector of your chart that governs daily routines and health. This cosmic climate is perfect for breaking bad habits and assuming new behaviors that will elevate your wellness, making it a good time to get back in shape, sharpen your time-management skills, and find healthy ways to alleviate stress. Purging your space of any unwanted items will also score you some major points with the Universe, so be sure to sort through all your cabinets and closets.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

With Libra season in full swing, Cancer, you’ll be devoted to the idea of spending more time in and elevating your space as the sun and Venus travel through your solar fourth house. Recharging at home will be vital to your sense of personal balance, though you’ll also feel the urge to decorate for Halloween, try new recipes or move furniture around. You should also consider bringing some homey elements from your childhood into your abode, dusting off old knickknacks from when you were a kid or recreating the interior design choices behind your grandmother’s sitting room.

The Aries full moon on October 9 could have you pondering a new career path, especially if you’re hoping to spend more time working remotely or have grown bored with your current occupation. Unfortunately, the desire for a fresh start could bring out an impulsive streak, though you should avoid quitting your job on a whim without a safety net under you. Luckily, this cosmic climate could also drum up new leadership opportunities, though you’ll need to get comfortable with the idea of having authority over others.

LEO (July 23 -

You’ll view the world through a fair-minded lens this month as the Libra sun and Venus activate your solar third house. Unfortunately, you might also become more sensitive to the injustices that plague our world. This could cause your mental health to take a hit if you don’t monitor your news consumption in accordance with what you can carry emotionally. These vibes will also elevate your skills as a mediator, Leo, so don’t be afraid to step in and attempt to mend quarrels between loved ones, helping to replace conflict with peace.

A curious energy could take hold of you once Mercury enters Libra on October 10, gearing you up for a period of growth through education. Use this planetary placement as an opportunity to groom your intellect by researching personal interests, writing, engaging in the art of conversation and appreciating your mind. Though you might feel as though your thoughts and ideas are overstimulating at times, finding a healthy outlet for your psyche can help keep these moments at bay.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO

You’ll be in the mood to slow down and embrace the sweeter side of life this month, dear Virgo, as the Libra sun and Venus travel through your solar second house. These vibes are all about soft sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and the golden hues of fallen leaves as the stars push you to indulge your senses while admiring the world around you. Treating yourself to the occasional luxury will also help boost morale, allowing you to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

While the cosmic climate at play will certainly have you reaching for your wallet more often than usual, opportunities to grow your finances are also liable to pop up. However, expanding upon the foundation that you’ve already built will take some intellectual maneuvering on your end, especially when it comes to making investments. The Aries full moon on October 9 can help you make important business decisions, but try not to move too impulsively. Meanwhile, Mercury’s entrance into Libra the next day asks that you analyze your budget, bringing some organization to your monthly expenditures.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA

You’ll carry yourself with composure and grace this month, Libra, as the sun and Venus make their way through your sign. This cosmic climate provides you with the sense that you are in your element on a universal scale as the stars align to help you feel supported, vibrant and optimistic. Keep your eyes peeled for signs and synchronicities during this time, because the other side will be eager to guide you toward your dreams. However, you’ll need to pull at the thread of any messages that land in your path. Be willing to step up and work hard for the rewards you seek.

Your intellect and conversational charisma will benefit from some celestial aid starting when sharp-witted Mercury enters your sign on October 10. This planetary placement will be working overtime to help you get your point across, making it important that you use your voice, share ideas and ask for what you deserve. New friendships could also be forged during this time. People will be naturally drawn to your curious yet comforting aura.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO

through the sector of your chart that governs the subconscious. This luminary placement provides you with an opportunity to restore balance to the depths of your soul, helping you find harmony and inner peace as you sort through your psyche. Luckily, the placement of Venus in your solar twelfth house brings an extra element of grace into the equation, allowing you to find patience for yourself and the journey that brought you to where you are today.

A more critical and methodical energy comes into play once Mercury enters Libra on October 10, asking you to take a practical look at your fears and the behaviors they cause. While confronting the ways in which you’ve been selfdestructive in the past might not sound like the most relaxing way to spend your time, acknowledging these patterns is the only way you’ll be able to overcome them. Luckily, logic will prevail for you during this time, giving you a chance to learn from the past without beating yourself up over mistakes that have been made.

SAGITTARIUS

The social butterfly that lives within you will be soaring high this month, Sagittarius, as the sun and Venus travel through airy Libra and the sector of your chart that governs community. This cosmic climate can provide you with an opportunity to relate to people from all walks of life, helping you expand your social circle and view of humanity. Try to keep your mind open when it comes to communicating with those whose views oppose your own, because your patience could reveal an unexpected meeting of minds. Try to remember that compromise can help rebuild broken bridges, bringing healing to our society at the grassroots level.

Your mood shifts once the sun and Venus enter secretive Scorpio on October 23, bringing you to a quieter and more solitary headspace. These vibes ask you to review your lifestyle choices, personal goals and, most importantly, relationships to address any areas of your life that could use some revamping. Change will be a major theme when it comes to surviving this luminary placement as the Universe asks you to transform on a profound and internal level.

CAPRICORN

Keep a tight rein on your finances, Capricorn, because Saturn and Uranus square off through the first half of this month. This cosmic climate could lead to unexpected expenses at any moment, so you might want to pad your bank account with some extra dough in the event of an emergency. Luckily, with the sun and Venus traveling through Libra and the sector of your chart that governs professional ambitions, you’ll have an opportunity to make headway with your career goals, which can help bring some extra income your way.

You’ll feel more vocal around the office once Mercury enters Libra on October 10, encouraging you to share ideas and invest more time in socializing with colleagues. Making new connections will feel more organic over the next several weeks, and the relationships you forge now could open doors in the future. If you’re overdue for some continued education, or you require a new certification to move up in your company, use this energy as the motivation to start this process, because your mind will absorb career-related information more easily.

AQUARIUS

Mastering your emotions could feel like a tall order through the first part of the month, Aquarius, as Saturn and Uranus square off in the sky. Sudden mood swings could cause you to unexpectedly close off or lash out, making it important that you find ways to stay centered and grounded if you feel your tension increasing. Unfortunately, a fierce desire to meet your personal goals could contribute to these difficult vibes, especially if you aren’t scheduling enough time for solitude and self-care in the comfort of your own home.

Luckily, the Universe rallies to bring some extra support your way as the sun and Venus travel through Libra and the sector of your chart that governs spirituality. Communicating with the other side will feel like a natural occurrence right now as the stars align to supercharge your intuition and ability to see beyond the veil. Devoting yourself to a meditation or religious practice can also help anchor you when troubled waters head your way, providing you with an opportunity to see the path ahead even when skies are gray.

PISCES

Censoring yourself might feel like a difficult task through the first part of the month, Pisces, as Saturn and Uranus square off in the sky. This planetary exchange could cause you to inadvertently blurt out any thoughts that are racing through your head, which could get you in trouble if you aren’t careful. You might also want to be mindful of who you share your deepest secrets or emotions with, confiding only in those you know you can trust and who won’t use the information against you later.

Meanwhile, the sun and Venus continue their journey through Libra and the sector of your chart that governs personal transformation, providing you with an opportunity to evolve at the core level. However, this cosmic climate could also lead to broken relationships and falling-outs, especially if the Universe wants you to move past any dynamic that has become toxic or unsupportive. Luckily, the idea of saying goodbye to people or situations that have been weighing you down won’t feel so scary when the stars align to lend you strength and power.
