A BOOK REVIEW By Gill Sherry Book Title: Lily’s Promise Author: Lily Ebert and Dov Forman Publisher: Macmillan Date of publication: 02/09/2021

10

MARCH 2022

Lily’s Promise It all started with a Tweet:

Yesterday my great-grandma (Lily Ebert – an Auschwitz survivor) showed me this banknote – given to her as a gift by a soldier who liberated her. Inscribed, it says “A start to a new life. Good luck and happiness.” Although Lily had promised herself many years before that she would tell the world exactly what happened at Auschwitz, the opportunity to do so never actually presented itself. Besides, who would believe the unbelievable? …the best way to protect ourselves once the war was over was simply to keep quiet.

Lily is a founder member of the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre and this story, told as a direct result of her greatgrandson’s Tweet (or more accurately, the response to it) is a moving account of what she endured at the hands of the Nazis. Lily was just 20 years old when she arrived at Auschwitz. Having visited the site myself, I had some idea of the horrors that had taken place. But Lily’s story does more than scratch the surface, it gets right under the skin. With one glance at you, this man gestured with his stick to the right or to the left. What this meant, we had no idea.

The sub-title of the book - How I Survived Auschwitz And Found The Strength To Live - promises emotion and horror, the name of the infamous death camp enough to conjure images of unspeakable atrocities before you even turn a page. But speak of them she does. I didn’t know that the stench was burning flesh and bones.

It’s a disturbing tale of cruelty and dehumanization. It describes the abhorrent conditions in which she was forced to travel, the gruelling work she was tasked with, and the small acts of defiance that gave her the strength and courage to go on. It also builds suspense despite what the reader may or may not already know about the Holocaust. Lily believes her faith gave her the will to survive and talks a great deal about her family and the human spirit. She thanks her parents for her unwavering faith and sees the same values and beliefs in her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, supporting the theory that ‘babies were the best revenge against Hitler’.

Three chapters of the book are told from her greatgrandson’s perspective. Dov’s natural curiosity and desire to protect his great-grandmother combine to form poignant words that are both heart-breaking and uplifting.

Lily’s story is becoming part of me. It’s hard to explain. I don’t just know it; I feel it, deep inside. There’s no denying that this powerful memoir is a difficult read but it does exactly what it intended to do: testify, educate and honour. At 97 years old, Lily has finally unearthed her buried pain, uncovered the truth behind her blue-inked tattoo (A-10572), and delivered on her promise to tell the world what really happened. It’s hard to believe, almost eight decades later, that innocent people are still being displaced by war. Lives are still being lost, families are still being destroyed. It’s a harrowing thought for us all but for Lily Ebert, especially so.

Andros Taverna

Rose Mary

Husband and wife team, Hsing Chen (former French laundry pastry chef) and Doug Psaltis (former RPM executive chef) joined forcesh to open Andros Taverna, an incredible Greek restaurant. Located in Logan Square, the restaurant is spacious and bustling with diners. Andros has delicious shareable plates, perfect for any setting.

Top Chef winner, Joe Flamm created a masterpiece when he created Rose Mary. The food is mostly Croatian, but many dishes have Italian influences. From great service to the considerate coursing (only dishes that complement each other arrive at the same time ), you’ll be frustrated that you don’t have room to try everything on the menu.

Recommendations:

Recommendations:

Griddled Cypriot Halloumi: If you’re a cheese connoisseur, this one is for you…and we are sure it won’t disappoint. Octopus: Tender and a little charred with meaty tentacles soaking in lemon and olive oil.

Prawn Saganaki: Prawns bathing in rich, delicious, tomato sauce with bits of feta and dill. Pair it with soft sesame village bread or the fluffy pita bread that is hand-stretched and made to order.

Turbot: Turbot Tuesday showcases some of the freshest sea catches to arrive at Andros for the week. Andros is determined to change the seafood industry through sustainability and by purchasing from local small boat suppliers and not large, conglomerate fishing operations. Chef Doug utilizes the entire fish with his menu and dishes. By purchasing and utilizing the whole fish, Andros will either butcher the fish in-house, serve the dish whole, or use what remains of the fish to create flavorful stock or sauces. Baklava Froyo: This frozen yogurt is topped with crispy baklava crumbles, pistachio sauce, and a drizzle of raw local honey. It has the perfect amount of sweetness and is truly amazing.

Stracciatella: This dish changes seasonally, it may come with strawberries or with an apple mostarda or with something completely different. But one thing that remains the same is the fluffy lepinja (Balkan flatbread) it’s served with. Coal Roasted Beets: A great appetizer to begin with, the beets are served with kajmak (cheese), pistachio, and honey.

Baby Octopus ‘Peka Style’: The octopus is cooked low and slow in a metal dish over an open fire. This makes it, and the potatoes it is served with, very tender and flavorful with garlic and pepper sauce. Crni: This creamy squid ink risotto is in rich lobster stock and topped with confit squid. Tortellini Djuvec: Delicious pasta with red pepper, eggplant, zucchini, Parmigiano, and pine nuts. Porcini Agnolotti: Rich pasta with Parmigiano, brown butter, and fresh shaved white truffle. Pistachio Gelato: End the evening on a light but refreshing note with this pistachio gelato drizzled with honey

Recommendations:

Etta

16

This is the kind of spot where you’ll want to order everything, and you’ll be disappointed by nothing. The food here is rich and flavorful. Etta has also been labeled as Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide for good quality food and good value cooking. MARCH 2022

Fire Baked Focaccia: Order the one with honey-sweetened ricotta. Ricotta Pillows: These ricotta-filled dumplings are drenched in a light truffle sauce. Burrata: This drool-worthy burrata is served with red onion jam, kabocha (squash), pear, pistachio, arugula, and basil. Garganelli Pasta: This not-to-miss pasta is marinated in heirloom cherry tomatoes, olive oil, burrata, and basil. Ricotta Agnolotti Pasta: Another rich and delicious house-made pasta with butter-poached lobster, smoked pumpkin, shiitake, and pepita. Wild Mushroom Pizza: There are usually six pizzas on the menu – five staples and a seasonal option. All are tasty and all come with a chewy, bubbly crust, but the wild mushroom (a staple) is a must. It comes with melted onions, goat cheese, black truffle, and raclette (cheese).

Perilla

Yuzu Sushi and Robata Grill

A Bib Gourmand in the Michelin guide, Perilla’s buzzy yet cozy Korean American street fare setting offers a variety of dishes suitable for all types of diners (read as: vegetarians as well).

Yuzu is known for its massive, colorful, and artistic sushi rolls. They look cool and taste good.

Recommendations Recommendations:

Kimchi Pancake: There are three types of pancakes; scallion, kimchi, and seafood. All are crispy and light.

Blistered Shishito Peppers: These peppers are charred, come with hazelnuts and fried anchovies, and have a sweet sauce that gives the spice a good balance. Steamed Egg: Perilla’s is a large bowl of light and fluffy steamed eggs, with dashi, green onion, and sesame.

Zazas Pizzeria Zazas Pizzeria offers a selection of nine specialty New Yorkstyle pizzas. Pizzas are offered by the slice for lunch and whole pies for dinner. All pizzas are made with a brushed crust containing olive oil infused with garlic and rosemary with finishing salt on top.

Takoyaki: Octopus doughballs topped with sweet mayo, sweet soy sauce, bonito flakes, and seasoned nori. Sounds weird but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Dragon Roll: With shrimp tempura, avocado, and unagi. It’s presented with a dragon drawn out of colored spicy mayo.

Udon Noodle Soup: The perfect noodle texture with bellywarming broth and mixed tempura.

Alla Vita

Alla Vita has it all, a gorgeous dining room and delicious food. The restaurant is decorated with hanging plants, string lights, and an overhead art installation.

Recommendations

Wood-Fired Bread: This crusty loaf is topped with taleggio, orange blossom honey, and black pepper.

White Pie: Topped with garlic, olive oil, whipped ricotta, mozzarella, and basil on sesame seed crust.

Pizza: There are around five pizza options, and we recommend the Margherita with tomato sauce, Fior di latte, and basil or the truffle mushroom with black truffle, caramelized onion, and taleggio. A bonus is that the wood-fired crust is chewy.

Hot Soppressata Pie: A delicious, sweet, and spicy pizza topped with fennel oil, hot honey, chili flakes, and Parmigiano.

Lasagna: This savory dish consists of wild mushroom Bolognese and fontina, layered with fresh pasta and a rich marinara sauce.

Recommendations

Truffle Mushroom Pie: Shiitake mushrooms, rosemary, garlic truffle cream, goat cheese, and sea salt.

Mafaldine: Homemade pasta with prawns, calamari, Calabrian chili, and garlic breadcrumbs.

La Josie

Kasama

La Josie has a rooftop deck and serves great Mexican food.

Kasama, a Filipino restaurant in Ukrainian Village, is a superb go-to spot for anything from pastries to meats.

Recommendations

Guacamole: Made with fresh Michoacán avocados and served with corn & flour tortilla chips. Elote: Oven-roasted corn, pico de gallo, roasted habanero, cilantro, and elote salt.

Mango Ceviche: Fresh Hawaiian yellowfin ahi tuna, mango leche de tigre, jicama, red onion, chile Fresno, grilled mango, avocado, habanero salt, and cilantro. Pescado a la Parilla Tacos: Grilled, citrus and garlic marinated fresh Baja striped bass, chile pasilla, Morita salsa, grilled mango, jicama, Fresno chile, and onion-cilantro slaw.

The Publican

The Publican specializes in meat and oysters. The Publican has high ceilings, wood furnishings, and communal tables. The Publican is heavy on the meats, but try to include a little bit of seafood and veggies in your order.

Recommendations

Mussels: A stone pot full of mussels bathing in a buttery, mouthwatering broth. Fries with Fried Egg: Pretty self-explanatory.

Duck Hearts: Sounds scary but try it. They come with mushrooms, ricotta, and some toasted bread.

18

Whole Chicken with Frites: A menu staple – it’s a juicy, whole bird over a bed of fries. MARCH 2022

Recommendations

Chicken Adobo: Sweet and tangy chicken, pickled papaya, and garlicky rice… what more could you ask for?

Berry Creme Fraiche Cheesecake: This is possibly the lightest cheesecake you’ll ever have. It has a soft graham crust and is topped with a light berry sauce.

FormerlyMe.com presents “On The Go: New York”

WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

Jim West

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “On The Go: New York” days of my journey. 20

MARCH 2022

The classic Frank Sinatra plays in your mind when you hear the name of perhaps the most famous city in the world, New York. New York had been one of the hardest hit places during the pandemic and with a mainstay of Broadway shut down was nice to come back to the city that never sleeps and support Broadway's reopening. I choose to see the stage adaptation of the Robin William's hit film, Mrs. Doubtfire.

Last but not least everyone who comes to New York has to try a slice of pizza. Many debates rage on with who has the best, and among those debates Joe's comes up a lot. I got in line at the Greenwich Village location and grabbed myself a slice.

No trip to New York is complete without visiting the top sights. This trip I decided to walk through all of central park. Central park in autumn is quite a lovely sight to see with the colors of the leaves ranging from green to red. It was also awesome to see people coming outside again and living life which seemed put on hold for too long. New York had been significantly impacted like everywhere else in the world. It was good to see the city getting back to normal. I am hopeful we all will be getting back to normal soon. Until then stay healthy and safe.

Other places around the Big Apple I got to see were Little Italy, Wall Street, and I took the train all the way to Coney Island. It was early morning and still lots of places were shut down, but I still took advantage of grabbing a Nathan's Famous hot dog and seeing the Atlantic Ocean.

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021-2022. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial www.cpmagazine.net

LAURA MANNING The Tea brand on a mission to get the UAE drinking better quality tea!

Meet Laura Manning, the founder of BRW Society, a UAE based tea brand. She moved to Dubai in 2018 and straight away felt that great quality tea was hard to come by, there was little choice in the premium quality, whole leaf tea category. After spending months asking her Mum to send tea to Dubai, she had a lightbulb moment - why not make great tea with lots of delicious varieties accessible in the region? Laura set on a mission to make tea a lot more colourful and fun in the UAE! She wants to ensure people in the UAE are drinking delicious, great quality tea (whole leaves & whole ingredients), which are sourced and packaged in a way that is kind to the planet! It is fair to say she is fanatical about quality tea and when she is not drinking tea she is thinking about tea! We sat with Laura this month for this exclusive interview and to know more about her brand and her love for tea. 22

MARCH 2022

www.cpmagazine.net

23

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello, my name is Laura, I am the Founder & Managing Director at BRW Society. BRW Society is a UAE based tea brand created to help society by creating more chances for people to find common ground. We make never done before tea blends, that BRW up a conversation.

Tell us about your education.

I went to school in South Wales, UK and obtained 10 GCSE’s and 3 A-Levels in English, History and Geography. I graduated from Swansea University with a BSc Degree in Business Studies and as part of my degree and I studied for 12 months in Nova Scotia, Canada. This is where my love of expat life began!

When and how did you move to the UAE?

I moved to the UAE in August 2018 with my husband and three children. We had always talked about living in another country so when my husband received an amazing job offer here in the UAE, we jumped at the opportunity and we have never looked backed. We love living in Dubai, it’s a great place to raise a family and is full of opportunities.

How and when did you develop the love for tea?

Growing up, tea was a big part of my life. I had a tea obsessed Nan who lived her life one cup of tea at a time, she got the whole family drinking tea. She thought everything could be fixed by just taking a pause and popping the kettle on. This has stuck with me my whole life and I really believe that a cup of tea is a power nap for your soul.

How often do you drink tea?

All day! I start my day with a cup of tea, I have many cups throughout the day, and I end my day with a herbal infusion.

Why did the idea of starting your tea brand in the UAE develop? How big the tea market in UAE?

I founded BRW Society in 2019, to inspire people who are squeezing the most into each day to slow down and savour small moments for themselves and with those around them. I know how important a cup of tea is for wellbeing. Putting the kettle on, getting your cup out, waiting for it to cool so you can get that first sip. It puts you in a state of mind to slow down and take in life. The time was right, and the UAE was just the perfect place for me to start my business, with its vibrant economy and high economic growth rates.

How was the experience establishing BRW Society? What challenges did you face in establishing it? How did you overcome them?

Establishing BRW Society has been an amazing experience, it has given me the opportunity to learn so much. And I am still learning! I’ve had to wear many hats from product management, human resources management, marketing and sales to accounting. Working in a large organisation, as I had done for the past 15 years, does not prepare you for starting your own business. There are many challenges you have to overcome, you have to learn fast and accept you’re going to make mistakes, its important to make mistakes and learn from them. One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was navigating around new business set in the UAE, particularly as I was new to the country but I overcome this by not giving up. It kept asking questions until it was clear in my mind what I was going to do and how I was going to do it.

How did Covid-19 affect your venture and what strategies did you have in place to manage its affect?

The business went through a huge transformation during the pandemic, online sales grew significantly but HORECA sales fell off a cliff. The decline in HORECA sales was personally really tough, I had spent so much time and effort hosting tea tasting events and I was close to signing several new contracts and then everything closed. I was completely gutted! But I had to keep moving, so I made the decision to focus all efforts on retail – both online and offline. People still needed tea. We found that the need for connection became very obvious during the pandemic. People were reconnecting over Zoom and posting selfies of their chats on Instagram. There was a sense of all of us not knowing what was going to happen but finding the comfort and security in each other. So at BRW Society our strategy was to help create more chances for people to connect and find common ground. One BRW at a time. Being agile and shifting our focus was the best decision I made because during the pandemic we grew as a business to a new level, sales grew exponentially.

What is Eco-friendly packaging? And why was it important to emphasise on this for your brand?

24

MARCH 2022

Eco-friendly packaging is kind to the planet, it’s biodegradable and recyclable. At BRW Society, we try our very best to do things right. We love tea and all the fun that comes with it but we know how important it is to take care of our earth's resources. That's why we strive to do things differently and have incorporated ecofriendly packaging for all our tea bags. We want you to have a great experience while still being environmentally conscious. I am passionate about having a sustainable brand, that integrates environmental and social issues into its operations. I truly believe sustainability is fundamental for success.

Where do you source your tea from and how do you ensure the butterscotch taste of this blend. In the afternoon I usually reach for a herbal, amongst my favourites are Moringa Supercharge, consistency in the quality? We source the most exciting natural flavours from around the globe and blend them into surprising and delightful combinations you can't find from any other brand in the UAE. We have travelled the globe to bring our customers the best quality tea from some of the most amazing tea gardens in the world. We source our raw materials from more than 30 countries around the world - high-quality teas, specialty teas, herbs, fruits and spices. Our buying team select suppliers and products according to quality and compliance with production requirements and social responsibility. We are in close contact with our suppliers in the countries of origin and carry out regular audits on them. Our expert tea tasters test samples from all over the world for quality, every tea is subjected to extensive testing several times, directly after harvesting, during shipping and again when it has reaches our warehouse. All of our delicious tea blends are EU compliant, many are organic certified and we strongly insist in natural farming which is pesticide free.

How is the tea made 100% plant based?

Our ingredients are plant based and we have extended this to include our packaging, to ensure the whole product is 100% plant based. We use plant-based material for the tea bag instead of synthetic plastics or bleached paper. They are biodegradable and can be completely broken down by microorganisms in the soil or compost. Plant-based material generally breaks down faster than their non-biodegradable counterparts, and so will not hang around in the environment forever. We chose FSC Certified Material for our boxes which is 100% recycled paper from responsibly managed forests. This means that no trees were felled when making your teabag box, and no animals were harmed in the process. We also use vegetable ink to make the boxes look snazzy! And lastly, our clear pouch which hold the teabags in the box, looks and feels like plastic but it’s actually made from renewable wood pulp and highly durable natural fibers, both of which are 100% recyclable. The result is a strong and versatile plasticlike material that can be shaped and molded into any form and applied as film wrap for a variety of products. We are passionate about creating products that are 100% plant based and better for the environment.

Organic Glow and Organic Snooze – and you cannot beat Organic Ginger & Lemon. I am also a huge fan of a cold brewed throughout the day, Mango Madness and Organic Pina Colada are just delicious and full of flavour.

What markets do you cover? How can tea lovers from Kuwait order your products? Currently we sell our products in multiple outlets across the UAE. We have developed a new website www.brwsociety.com where people can shop our products from around the world, we deliver globally. On our website you can shop by tea type, tea format and mood.

What are some of your future plans for your business?

I would love to see BRW Society stocked in multiple countries around the world with many, many more blends and exciting new discoveries. I dream of BRW Society becoming a household name and becoming a trusted brand of choice. And, I hope I can inspire more people who are squeezing the most into each day to slow down and savour small moments for themselves and with those around them.

What is your biggest achievement thus far?

BRW Society is really shaking up the market in the UAE, adding a splash of colour on the black tea market and I am really proud about that. Unlike grocery or restaurant exclusive brands, BRW Society is available in both. Tea lovers are able to enjoy our products at home and when they are out and about at one of our partner cafes or restaurants.

What are some of your other hobbies?

In my spare time I enjoy running, spending time with my family, and watching the occasional Nicholas Cage movie, with a large cuppa in hand.

Your message for our readers.

Be inspired by tea - each cup is a chance to rejuvenate your spirit by pausing to connect with yourself and those around you.

Your message for us at CP magazine. Tea is always a good idea!

What are some of the varieties of tea that BRW Society offers? What other products do you sell besides tea?

We take pride in source the most exciting natural flavours from around the globe and blend them into surprising and delightful combinations you can't find from any other brand in the UAE. We have a range of black, oolong, green and white teas plus herbal and fruit infusions. You can shop our collection of 22

plastic free teabags or over 50 loose leaf tea blends inspired by nature that captivate your senses. All of our tea blends pair perfectly with our must have accessories. In the accessory range we have teapots, mugs, bottles and other teaware.

My go to tea in the morning is a green or white tea, I could sip our Organic Rose White all day long, it contains low caffeine so it doesn’t give you the jitters. My second cuppa is usually a Milky Oolong, slightly higher caffeine content but I just love the Milky

VERSUS COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS AFRAA AL SUWAIDI, SARA AL AHLI, AND ZIAD AL NAJAR EXHIBIT ARTWORKS CURATED BY FATIMA AL KURDI & IRIS ART AGENCY AT VILLA AUMÉDAN DUBAI. Versus Collective Consciousness examines the relationship between the creator and the spectator, showing works distant from senses of collective behaviors, cognitive or intellectual bias. It narrates how artists choose to be disconnected from the relationship of "self" and "the surroundings," showing the artist's true aspirations and individual perception away from the group-think. The works presented in this exhibition mark how artists worked against the herd behavior and the mass mind and

accepted the alienation perceived by many. Like many aspects of life, art can examine many levels of collective consciousness from different lenses within different territories. Beliefs, values, and cultural norms taught in societies affect how we perceive art. The seven-day exhibition connects a range of creatives who are constantly challenging the ordinary and share a fascination of art. The exhibition will also include a live art performance by artist Asareh Ebrahimpour.

ABOUT AFRAA AL SUWAIDI

Afraa Al Suwaidi is an Emirati visual artist whose practice is anchored in sculpture. Afra works primarily in plaster, exploring lengthy and thorough processes of conceptual threads. Whether figurative or abstract, her creation often prompts sentiments of solitariness. Working with fluid mediums allows her to scrutinize the anatomy of time by observing objects take form and shape through the process of hardening. She is captivated by plaster's nature, which exemplifies the dialogue of adding and subtracting and giving and taking. Essentially, her study questions the human condition in its actions and reactions. Al Suwaidi questions the human condition in its actions and reactions. Through her childlike practice, candies, and colors, Afraa invites us to look back at our childhood, sense the time that has passed, and explore the memories that we often forget or pretend to have forgotten.

FATIMA AL KURDI

ABOUT SARA AL AHLI

Sara Al Ahli is an Emirati artist and fashion designer living and working in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Having led personal projects in fashion, Ahli has transitioned to sculpture as a new branch of her practice. Her sculptural work explores themes of discomfort and pressure while embodying a sense of play. Ahli stages situations of tension, testing the limitations of the materials in reference to the human body. Ahli uses the human body and its experiences as the primary source of inspiration. Through her sculptures, she questions the amount of pressure one can take and how far it affects the physical and emotional memory. Ahli’s work is an example of how humans hold memories and endure unpleasant experiences coming from their surroundings.

ABOUT ZIAD AL NAJJAR

26

Ziad Al Najjar is an artist from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Coming from a diverse background, he looks at aspects of his parents' and grandparents' backgrounds as an exploration into better understanding identity and culture through a modern lens. His current work looks into the historical and contemporary applications of marks and motifs in art, architecture, religious imagery, textile, and design, thus creating transcultural relationships. Through nuanced colors studies, patterning, and materiality, he constructs layers of ambivalence within the artworks visually and representationally. Al Najjar's works analyze space and abstraction. He builds layered patterns inspired by his surroundings, often found in nature or created by man. By examining and experimenting with historical and contemporary applications of marks and motifs in textile and design, he invites the spectator to exaggerate the way of seeing by focusing on the artwork's motion, composition, and optical perception. ABOUT ASAREH EBRAHIMPOUR

Asareh's practice is based on pure improvisation and trusting senses; neglecting guidelines or rules makes her work entirely experimental. Ebrahimpour's performance challenges the conventions of traditional forms of visual art. The primary tool in this process is her body which she believes is her proper guide. When going through a traumatic experience, humans tend to overlook the physical body. Asareh questions the way our bodies handle memories which are often dealt with avoidance; in a conscious or unconscious effort to suppress the trauma memory, one tends to harm rather than heal. Ebrahimpour's performance is seen as a ritual, a calling for healing, and a way of remembering one's true self; she deep dives back to the body to cure physically, mentally, and spiritually. A journey where she mourns with the old body

liberates the soul, breaks the chain, and finally accepts the new one.

Meet Zainab Youssef Shaaban a well know TV Host. Zainab is very passionate about media. She wants people to take her seriously and not just for the fact that her father is a very well known actor. We enjoyed interviewing Zainab this month for our readers and discovered many interesting things about her. We are sure you will love reading it.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello I’m Zainab Youssef Shaaban. Just a normal 22 year old girl who is highly motivated to succeed in her job. I’m very passionate about media and growing up that’s all I knew. All my life I’ve been surrounded by studios and cameras and wanted to take this seriously when I grew up. I decided to make it my own profession and got a Bachelors degree in media. I want people to take me seriously about it and not just for the fact that my father is a very well known actor.

Tell us about some of your childhood memories?

My childhood memories are all based from my beautiful country Egypt. I loved how everyone was a team in everything they do and in any situation or scenarios. What I mean by that is growing up in Egypt I would always see people standing up for each other or help each other without any hesitation and I think that memory is very important because it’s part of what made me who I am today.

How did you get interested in the media field and what lead you to be a show host?

I was interested in media since I was young but choosing which field in media I wanted was a hard decision. All media fields might seem similar but are very different and I knew I wanted to be a voice that can spread a message and my dad had a deep feeling or belief that I was destined to be a TV Host and here we are.

What special preparations do you do before presenting a show?

Of course I would research about my guest and find out as much information and prepare questions that would embrace their talents. My best part is actually meeting them before the shoot and talking to them to get to know them better and see if there’s anything they’re not comfortable with so we can definitely work on it. I try my best on building a comfortable environment for my guest because I’m here for them and to highlight them and not the opposite.

30

MARCH 2022

Who has mentor?

been

your

biggest

My dad without a doubt. He knew how hard media can be and didn’t want us to get into it unless we were fully dedicated to it and get our university degrees before making a decision. But, he saw that I had the ability to be a TV host since I first got accepted in university and before he passed away, he was and will always be by my side in every step I take his advice and lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life.

Are you interested in acting?

Yes, I am actually. I wanted to get to know every position in media so I was already an assistant director for a series because I wanted to be more behind the scenes in order to prepare for my leading role in a Khaleeji series.

What is your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement is that I got to make my dad’s dream come true and got to hear him say that he was proud of me. He wanted a university degree and to see me as a TV Host. So, I worked twice as hard to graduate earlier and worked as a TV Host during my last year of university.

What is your motto in life?

I would say keep moving forward. No matter what struggles I’m facing or whatever life would throw at me I would still move forward and that’s very important for everyone to do. If some bad news or you’re in a bad position right now just think of what your solution would be? What’s you next step? Because what’s done is done and there is no point to still keep thinking over it. Just always try your best to move forward and you won’t regret it.

www.cpmagazine.net

31

Your favourite quote?

There are two actually and both really do support what I was saying about moving forward. First one is “it’s going to get better” and “if you’re scared of losing something, lose it so you stop being afraid“

What are some of your other hobbies?

I love sports. I was on the soccer, futsal, and volleyball team of my university. I love playing basketball and swimming is more of my stress release.

Your favourite music?

I listen to everything really, but I would say for English it goes from new songs to old school are all good to listen to.

Your favourite travel destination and why?

Egypt of course because, have you seen how beautiful my country is? But for a country I hope I can go to is New York because I really love the busy city with the night atmosphere over there.

Your all-time favourite movie (s)?

My friends can easily answer this and I can hear their voices screaming it already and that would be Rocky. This includes also includes Creed as it’s also a sequence to it.

What is your beauty and fitness secret?

I think beauty is within. If you have a positive mindset to yourself and the world that’s when you see a difference and start shining.

How do you relax?

Take me to the ocean or go for a swim. I need to be surrounded by water in a way for order for me to relax. Other than that helping my friends or family in any tiny or big situations. They really do help me relax because once they’re okay I am too.

What can’t without?

you

leave

home

A smile! And of course my phone or else a lot of people would be mad.

What’s the best piece of advice you have heard and repeat to others?

This is also in Arabic but it says patience is beautiful. I would say it since I was a child and till now that’s one of the first things I tell people when they need an advice. 32

MARCH 2022

What are some of your plans for the future?

Hopefully to achieve more in my TV Host career and to grow bigger with a positive message that can reach everyone and be a friendly face to all.

You only have to enter the lobby of Bio Habitat Hotel to be amazed by its 360-degree view, which allows you to appreciate the natural beauty of the Central and Western mountains in Colombia. Located just 30 minutes from El Eden airport in Armenia and 35 minutes from Pereira Matecaña airport, the hotel is an ideal based camp to visit the charming towns of Quindío, Filandia and Valle del Cocora declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Julián Escobar and Jorge Andrés González founded the hotel following the vision to connect their self with the best of Colombian nature. And it´s a dream come true! Bio Habitat Hotel is a collection of glass tree-house-style suites surrounded by lush forest. The master suites are the largest rooms and have an outdoor jacuzzi; in addition, their names correspond to the view from the place where each one is located: cordillera, ocaso, atardecer y serranía. On the other hand, the suites are similar to the previous ones, but without the outdoor jacuzzi. But if you're an adventure traveller who enjoy going deep into the forest, the aviaries are the ideal choice. These glass cubes are elevated above the three hectares of native forest that surround the hotel, and each one is named after the birds that can be spotted in the area: hummingbird, raccoon and toucan. The snowy cabin is the best option for families. This is a typical cabin of the coffee region that has been remodelled to receive groups of families or friends. 36

There’s an infinity pool, a wellness center, and a slow food restaurant, Basto, from chef María Clara Roa. Passionate about honest and conscious food, Maria Clara has been working to bring the best of our local cuisine to your table, making every region of Colombia her inspiration. BASTO reflects her work, respecting every local ingredient and making our culture the star of her dishes.

When booking a room, the hotel offers the option of adding experiences to your stay; local biologists lead these experiences. In this way, the habitantes (as they call their guests) can go bird watching, coffee picking and tasting, walk night trails in the native forest and visit the Bio trail, where they can learn in detail about the hotel's sustainable processes. www.cpmagazine.net

It seems that the place is designed to take photos at every turn and share them on social media. Perhaps that's why actresses, presenters and instagrammers have posted their best photos showing them enjoying the hotel.

At a time when climate and environmental activists are raising their voices, Bio Habitat understands the importance of consistency between its experiences and its operation. To this end, they have created different strategies, such as a compost bin in which 100 per cent of the organic waste is turned into compost that is then used by the guests themselves to plant native trees in a forest restoration project. www.cpmagazine.net

A GETAWAY TO

SANTORINI Experiencing the world-famous sunset in Santorini has always been on my bucket list, and I was lucky enough to travel to the beautiful Island and experience the sunset. The island is a part of the Cycladic group of islands in Greece. Santorini is best known for its charming towns perched atop cliffs, incredible views of the caldera (a large sunken volcanic crater dating back to an eruption in 1645 BC) and picturesque sunsets.

Dimitri’s Ammoudi Tavern (Oia) Super casual oceanside seafood restaurant There are beautiful cave hotels, houses in Oia, or that’s perfect for lunch. We had the yummiest seafood here! Dimitri’s is located Cycladic suites in Thira. We stayed in Thira for 4 along Oia’s famous Ammoudi Bay hundreds of steps below the town nights in a Cycladic suite as it was central to the island and we could watch the sunset from our WHERE TO TAKE PICTURES: window. If you decide to stay in Oia which is the Santorini has photoshoot sessions that you can book via Airbnb experience most famous town you should definitely try a cave or google to capture the beautiful memories on the island. The sessions vary house. You’ll want to select the accommodation depending on the number of sites and hours you decide to go for, you can always depending on the view sea/sunset and the prices. take pictures yourself and the photo spots in Santorini are –

WHERE TO STAY:

1.The Caldera views from Oia & Imerovigli The best time to go is in the summer when the 2.Cave hotels along the Oia cliffside island is full of activity – during off season very 3.The 3 blue domes in Oia. Oia windmill few things are open. If you’re very limited on time and have multiple destinations planned 2-3 days Hope you enjoy your trip in Santorini. is plenty.

WHEN TO GO:

WHAT TO DO:

Santorini is famous for its sailing cruises so we choose Daily Catamaran sailing cruise. They pick you up and drop you off to your hotel. We set sail from the port and sailed across the Red beach, White beach, had our first swimming stop at Mesa Pigadia cove where some hot springs were. Then we headed towards the Caldera of Santorini, a canvas that words can’t describe and is an ideal spot for pictures, meanwhile the crew prepares the food and drinks for everyone. The cruise trip ends with a beautiful sunset in the middle of the sea and heads back to the port. Santorini has a romantic vibe and watching the sunset on top of the Caldera is one of the best things to do. In high tourist season its recommended to be there ahead of time since it gets crowded.

Santorini Cable car is a safe transport means from the old port to the Capital of Santorini Thira. The route takes only 3 minutes and while sitting in it you can admire the amazing view of the caldera, the sea and the volcano from a 220m altitude.

WHERE TO EAT:

Lauda (Oia) By far Oia’s most renowned fine dining restaurant! This meal was definitely a big splurge, but by far our best dinner in Santorini. The atmosphere is so romantic and every table has a gorgeous view of the caldera.

NOON BY NOOR In 2013, the Bahraini brand founded by cousins Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa Noor became the first GCC-based fashion brand to be invited to NY Fashion Week where it continued to show. They made their London Fashion Week debut for Spring 2022 recently.

Noon by Noor’s modern aesthetic and ethos fuses understated luxury with a sense of self-assured femininity. Relaxed silhouettes and intricate details combine with a deep appreciation of masculine dress codes, to create signature pieces: a perfectly tailored blazer and oversized shirt, fundamentals that continue to define the designers’ vision. Established in 2008 by Bahraini cousins Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa, Noon by Noor’s design philosophy lies in true artistry with a subtle hand, where timeless wearable pieces are constructed and adorned with exquisite details. Precise yet relaxed crisp-cotton shirts that riff on masculine codes are worn under immaculately structured tailoring and paired with impeccably cut trousers. The brand sources the very finest quality fabrics and materials – understated yet truly luxurious, as embodied by delicate, cobweb-like knits – provide a tactile wearability, best appreciated in hand. www.cpmagazine.net

The designers made their London Fashion Week debut recently, presenting Collection 2 titled “Light” at East London's Rochelle School, home of artists and architects. For Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa, “A photograph of Bahraini pearl divers in their sarongs gently gathered and tied at the waist, mixed with dreams of summer sunshine, holiday memories and flowers was the start of our spring collection development. We selected our fabrics, mixing different scales of checks from ginghams to madras, alongside bold stripes in lime-ivory, pinkivory and grey-ivory.”

“Beautiful poplins, jersey, washed cottons, coated linens, silk voiles, organza, tulle and canvas all reflect the idea of light. Sometimes two or three of these fabrics are combined into one garment,” said Designer Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa. Keeping the silhouette chic and clean, the designers maintained the codes to which they are drawn, mixing structure with cuts and details of men’s clothes alongside feminine dresses and separates. Embroideries of the brand’s signature florals reemerge with sprigs of colour, as well as white-onwhite traditional mirror work embroidery, which sparkle in the light as the garment moves.

Founder of Prism Adventures

Meet Ahmed Almonsouri - an architect and founder of Prism Adventures. Ahmed holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Iowa State University. Passionate about the power of travel to change the world for the better, Ahmed's Prism Adventures has become very popular for providing an inclusive and safe environment for everyone to be their authentic self. We really enjoyed sitting down with Ahmed for this interview and know more about his passion for travel and his future trips and plans for Prism Adventures.

50

MARCH 2022

www.cpmagazine.net

51

Please introduce yourself to our readers. Hello! My name is Ahmed Almonsouri, I am an architect and founder of Prism Adventures.

Tell us about your education.

I graduated from A’Takamul school in Kuwait and then I went to Iowa State University in the United States to continue my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.

What are the 3 biggest lessons you learned while living in New York?

52

I learned a lot from the six years I spent in Iowa and the one year I worked in New York. When I went to Iowa, I was a very timid 18-yearold, scared of expressing who I was. Iowa gave me the space to embrace myself and my differences. I experimented many different art forms, competed in dance, worked on creating sculptural fashion, and traveled, all while studying architecture. I decided to move to NY after graduation, and worked in the fashion and jewelry industry. I really enjoyed it as I had a huge passion for sculptural wear. However, I found myself very unhappy with the work/life balance in the

MARCH 2022

states and specifically in NY. I knew it wasn’t for me, but I ignored my gut feeling because the idea of being in “New York” was so glamorous, even if the reality of it was not. The biggest 3 lessons I learned from that is to not be afraid of who I am and my potential, to accept and love others for who they are and not for who I want them to be, and to always listen to my gut feeling.

Tell us about your passion for travelling? – touch on what initially fueled your wanderlust.

I always loved to travel, and the older I grew, the more I started feeling like I wanted to be in nature. I did not know at the time what that meant for me. In 2016 I planned a trip with friends to Oman, we hiked and spent a lot of time in nature. It felt like time had paused in a way, because we were disconnected from the outside world and it was just us six friends surrounded by nature, sleeping in tents, waking up to the sound of goats. It was truly liberating – and I knew at that moment that I wanted to continue exploring this type of travel.

When and why did you decide to make it a business?

There are many things that lead me to starting Prism Adventures. I felt the need to start a community that was all-loving and all-accepting, and at the time I did not know how this would happen. When I got into adventure travel, I realized that “THIS IS IT!” Travel became the vessel for that. This led me to organizing my first trip to Norway in 2018 and to my surprise, I found myself enjoying the planning and guiding process as much as I enjoy traveling. When you guide someone, who has never been on an adventure trip and you see them get hooked on it and you see the big changes in their lives because of it, the feeling is priceless.

When was Prism Adventures launched and where all have you lead the trips so far? The first trip we organized was in 2018 – we have done yearly trips to Norway and Iceland. We also guided trips to Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Kilimanjaro, and the UAE. This year we have two upcoming trips to Norway, and two upcoming trips to Iceland,

as well as Greenland and the Amalfi Coast. In 2023 we are expanding to Costa Rica, Japan and Vietnam, and more – and of course we will keep doing our yearly Norway and Iceland trips.

What makes Prism Adventures different?

I see travel as therapy, and for therapy to be fruitful you need a safe environment. Our aim is to provide you with an unparalleled experience in terms of places to see and itineraries to experience – all while advocating and encouraging an inclusive and safe environment for everyone to be their authentic self. We are super involved and hands-on with our trips, so you will not see us act as the middle-person between the traveler and the local guides – we’ll be with you every step of the way and throughout the whole trip.

What are some of your guidelines for people looking to travel with Prism Adventures?

One of the main ingredients to an unforgettable and successful trip is the group itself. I think there is a common denominator between people that helped make our trips become an

www.cpmagazine.net

53

experience of a lifetime and that is their tolerance and acceptance of others. Prism Adventures is a travel community that values and encourages inclusivity and unity across different cultures, religions, races, ethnicities, gender identities/ expressions, sexual orientations, ages, and personal beliefs. This is why I have made it an integral part of the registration process to accept the Prism Adventures Community Guidelines as well as sign a waiver related to that before joining a trip.

How long is a typical trip?

Our trips range from 7 to 9 days on an average, depending on the country and activities.

What’s your favorite adventure travel?

thing

about

I love the challenges in adventure travel, either physical, emotional, or social. Physical and emotional challenges go hand in hand for me, as the more challenging the trip is the more emotional depth I discover within myself. On a social level, I absolutely love how you start up with a group of strangers who do not know each other, from different backgrounds and ages, and see them become great friends and a family by the end of the trip.

What kind of research do you do when you decide on new destinations? What resources do you do for such researches? I do all types of research! I always start with googling the country and then I go back to some travel books that I have. Once I get an idea of what areas I want to visit, I start by contacting local Guides. I also use social media as I check geo-locations and direct message people who have been there to get different opinions and insights.

What electronics gear & gadgets do you consider must-haves for Prism Adventure travels?

It really depends on the trip. For example, when going to Kilimanjaro we stayed in tents for 7 days without any electricity – so having a power bank to charge our phone/camera is a must-have. As for other trips, each trip has a detailed packing list that includes clothing and electronics that suit each destination.

How do you decide what adventure comes next? Do you plan ahead or just take off as the idea or opportunity presents itself? What is your next destination?

I sometimes look at the automatic screensaver on my desktop and think “I want to go there!” That is actually how I planned my first trip to Norway after seeing a photo of Trolltunga rotate on my desktop. Other times I post polls on social media and see where our followers would like to go and plan based on that. Our next destination will be a backpacking trip to Italy’s Amalfi Coast. 54

MARCH 2022

What are the most important things that traveling has taught you?

So many lessons are learned while traveling, but one thing that I constantly get reminded of is how tiny we are relative to the world – that realization is so comforting to me. I always regain that perspective during my trips either from being immersed into out-of-this-world landscapes, meeting an inspiring Prism Traveller, or experiencing different cultures.

Your message for us at CP magazine.

Thank you for having me on CP Magazine - I would just like to end on this thought that Traveling is essential to expanding our perspectives on life - and adventure travel is that and more. It is therapeutic, so if you get the chance to experience it - do not think twice and just go for it.

What are some of your other hobbies besides travelling?

I have so much passion for creating sculptural fashion and wearable art as well as dance and drawing. During the full lockdown in 2020, I started self-teaching myself how to play the piano, and now it has become an integral part of my day.

What has been your personal favourite destination so far and why?

This question is always hard to answer as I get attached to every country I go to. However, if I had to choose a favorite destination it would be Iceland for its alien-like landscape and colors. www.cpmagazine.net

SCENOGRAFIE LATOxLATO PRESENTS A NEW COLLECTION OF ARCHITECTURALLYINSPIRED CACHE-POTS FOR SUCCULENT PLANTS. UNIQUE METAPHYSICAL BACKDROPS FOR SHOW-STOPPING GREENERY.

The design studio led by Virginia Valentini and Francesco Breganze de Capnist transcends the simple flowerpot to create a series of strikingly original and theatrical pieces of architecture in miniature. Rarefied and mysterious scenes reminiscent of the paintings of Giorgio De Chirico, dedicated to showcasing the fascinating sculptural forms of succulent plants.

56

MARCH 2022

LATOxLATO presents its new collection “Scenografie.” Innovative, architectural cache pots offer a spectacular display of greenery. These pieces offer an original way to showcase succulent plants: placing their fascinating sculptural forms, no two alike, on these foundations. Transcending the simple flowerpot, the design studio founded by Virginia Valentini and Francesco Breganze de Capnist has created a series of original and theatrical pieces of architecture for plants: stagesettings that combine the cache pot and its stand in a single object. These “Scenografie” are as mysterious and metaphysical as a De Chirico painting, structured to show off the botanical eometries of succulents at their very best.

www.cpmagazine.net

57

The “Scenografie” Collection As in all its other collections, LATOxLATO takes inspiration from the rich heritage of Italian art and architecture and reimagines it in an unexpected, contemporary style. The collection includes three pieces. Each recalls an iconic element of the artistic language of architecture and then, as in metaphysical poetry, decontextualizes it in a rarefied and almost dreamlike dimension. “Quinta n. 1” is a harmonious series of arches creating a deep perspective. On the boundary between the Romanesque and the Gothic, “Quinta n. 2” evokes the geometries of a cathedral. “Quinta n. 3” is a majestic and abstract stairway. All three “stage settings” are specifically designed to show off the quiet presence of succulents. Like all LATOxLATO pieces, they are all exclusively made in Italy. The workmanship stands out for its invisible welds: the visual continuity of the surfaces allows for maximum theatrical impact as a backdrop.

The “Scenografie” collection is also suitable for outdoor use, thanks to the treatment of the materials. The mini-architectures are made of laser-cut iron, hand-welded, and painted with powder coatings that are resistant to corrosion, water and aggressive agents. The sophisticated color palette includes mica gray, corten, and tortoiseshell. A delicate tribute to the piazzas, palaces and porticoes of the Italian Renaissance, bringing a special finishing touch to the architectural, geometrical and metaphysical signature of “Scenografie.”

58

MARCH 2022

“We created this new collection for LATOxLATO when we realized that there weren’t as many options for displaying cactus plants as there were classic flowerpots for other houseplants. We started exploring the world of succulents - some of them very rare - and discovered marvelous examples of varied colors and complex, fleshy shapes. It’s not always enough to show off one of these unique beauties on a plain white wall or a crowded bookshelf. That gave us the idea to design a real “stage” where a cactus could be the star of the show,”, explain LATOxLATO founders Virginia Valentini

and Francesco Breganze de Capnist.

KENZO and Nigo's Second Drop

TIGER TAIL

Under the artistic direction of Nigo, KENZO releases the second drop in a series of limited-edition capsule collections for Spring-Summer 2022. The drop follows the designer’s debut runway show for the Maison in January 2022, with two additional capsules to come. Nigo was appointed Artistic Director of KENZO in September 2021. The second capsule collection exemplifies the twisting of archetypes and symbols central to Nigo’s design. An emblem of KENZO, the tiger emerges in new cartoonish form, expressed through the simplified and humorous hand of the Artistic Director. Surrounded by leaves, it appears across two five-piece wardrobes. Designed for women and men, respectively, but genderless in spirit, the wardrobes express a timeless and essential approach to dressing. A

black oversized molleton hoodie defines the collection’s relaxed silhouette. It is reflected in a dark green drawstring cotton cargo trouser embellished with the new signature flower button. The drop further includes a black sweatshirt and black and white t-shirts with animated tiger tail motifs on the back. As precursors to a reinvigorated KENZO, the SpringSummer 2022 capsule collections embody the philosophy at the root of Nigo’s practice at the Maison: a real wardrobe for the future, tied to the wisdom of the past. In homage to Kenzo Takada, each drop revolves around the idea of the natural elements key to the legacy of the founder. Expanding on the form and function of these motifs, Nigo draws on the Japanese sensibility of flora and fauna as signifiers of symbols and feelings.

The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James

by Sabaa Tahir

The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America's Bird

by Jack Emerson Davis

In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect--a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion. Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases--a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes. They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

Lahore, Pakistan. Then. Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match. After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Cloud’s Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start. Juniper, California. Now. Salahudin and Noor are more than best friends; they are family. Growing up as outcasts in the small desert town of Juniper, California, they understand each other the way no one else does. Until The Fight, which destroys their bond with the swift fury of a star exploding. Now, Sal scrambles to run the family motel as his mother Misbah’s health fails and his grieving father loses himself to alcoholism. Noor, meanwhile, walks a harrowing tightrope: working at her wrathful uncle’s liquor store while hiding the fact that she’s applying to college so she can escape him—and Juniper—forever. When Sal’s attempts to save the motel spiral out of control, he and Noor must ask themselves what friendship is worth—and what it takes to defeat the monsters in their pasts and the ones in their midst.

The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

All My Rage

A Memoir

by Stephen Galloway

by Bob Odenkirk

In 1934, a friend brought fledgling actress Vivien Leigh to see Theatre Royal, where she would first lay eyes on Laurence Olivier in his brilliant performance as Anthony Cavendish. That night, she confided to a friend, he was the man she was going to marry. There was just one problem: she was already married— and so was he. TRULY, MADLY is the biography of a marriage, a love affair that still captivates millions, even decades after both actors' deaths. Vivien and Larry were two of the first truly global celebrities – their fame fueled by the explosive growth of tabloids and television, which helped and hurt them in equal measure. They seemed to have it all and yet, in their own minds, they were doomed, blighted by her long-undiagnosed mental-illness, which transformed their relationship from the stuff of dreams into a living nightmare. Through new research, including exclusive access to previously unpublished correspondence and interviews with their friends and family, author Stephen Galloway takes readers on a bewitching journey. He brilliantly studies their tempestuous liaison, one that took place against the backdrop of two world wars, the Golden Age of Hollywood and the upheavals of the 1960s — as they struggled with love, loss and the ultimate agony of their parting.

Bob Odenkirk's career is inexplicable. And yet he will try like hell to explain it here, because that is what memoirs are for. Charting a "Homeric" decades-long "Odyssey" from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago all the way to a dramatic career that is baffling to his friends, it's almost like there are two or three Bob Odenkirks...but there is just one and one is enough, frankly. Bob embraced a life in comedy after a chance meeting with Second City's legendary Del Close, which eventually led to a job as a writer at SNL. As he weathered the beast that is live comedy, he stashed away the secrets of sketch writing--employing them in the immortal "Motivational Speaker" sketch for his friend Chris Farley, honing them on The Ben Stiller Show, and perfecting them on Mr. Show With Bob and David, which inspired an entire generation of comedy writers and stars. Then his career met the hope-dashing machine that is Hollywood development. But when all hope was lost for the umpteenth time, Bob was more astonished than anyone to find himself on Breaking Bad. His embrace of this strange new world of dramatic acting led him to working with Steven Spielberg, Alexander Payne, and Greta Gerwig, until finally re-re-inventing himself as a bona-fide worldwide action star for reasons that even he does not fully grasp! Read this and do your own psychoanalysis--it's fun!

by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Meddy Chan has been to countless weddings, but she never imagined how her own would turn out. Now the day has arrived, and she can't wait to marry her college sweetheart, Nathan. Instead of having Ma and the aunts cater to her wedding, Meddy wants them to enjoy the day as guests. As a compromise, they find the perfect wedding vendors: a Chinese-Indonesian familyrun company just like theirs. Meddy is hesitant at first, but she hits it off right away with the wedding photographer, Staphanie, who reminds Meddy of herself, down to the unfortunately misspelled name. Meddy realizes that is where their similarities end, however, when she overhears Staphanie talking about taking out a target. Horrified, Meddy can't believe Staphanie and her family aren't just like her own, they are The Family--actual mafia, and they're using Meddy's wedding as a chance to conduct shady business. Her aunties and mother won't let Meddy's wedding ceremony become a murder scene--over their dead bodies--and will do whatever it takes to save her special day, even if it means taking on the mafia.

Good Intentions by Kasim Ali

It's the countdown to midnight on New Year's Eve and Nur is steeling himself to tell his parents that he's seeing someone. A young British Pakistani man, Nur has spent years omitting details about his personal life to maintain his image as the golden eldest child. And it's come at a cost. Once, Nur was a restless and insecure college student, struggling to present himself after being transplanted from his hometown with only the vaguest sense of ambition. At a packed house party, he meets Yasmina, a beautiful and selfpossessed aspiring journalist. They start a conversation--first awkward, then absorbing--that grabs Nur's attention like never before. And as their relationship develops, moving from libraries and cramped coffee shops to an apartment they share together, so too does Nur's self-destruction. He falls deeper into traps of his own making, attempting to please both Yasmina and his family until he no longer has a choice. He must finally be honest and reveal to those who raised him the truth he's kept hidden: Yasmina is Black, and he loves her. Deftly transporting readers between that first night and the years beyond, Good Intentions exposes with unblinking authenticity the complexities of immigrant families and racial prejudice. It is a crackling, wryly clever depiction of standing on the precipice of adulthood, attempting to piece together who it is you're meant to be.

A House Between Earth and the Moon by Rebecca Scherm

Scientist Alex Welch-Peters has believed for twenty years that his super-algae can reverse the effects of climate change. His obsession with his research has jeopardized his marriage, his relationships with his kids, and his own professional future. When Sensus, the colossal tech company, offers him a chance to complete his research, he seizes the opportunity. The catch? His lab will be in outer space on Parallaxis, the first-ever luxury residential space station built for billionaires. Alex and six other scientists leave their loved ones to become Pioneers, the beta tenants of Parallaxis. But Parallaxis is not the space palace they were sold. Day and night, the embittered crew builds the facility under pressure from Sensus, motivated by the promise that their families will join them. Meanwhile, back on Earth, with much of the country ablaze in wildfires, Alex’s family tries to remain safe in Michigan. His teenage daughter, Mary Agnes, struggles through high school with the help of the ubiquitous Sensus phones implanted in everyone’s ears, archiving each humiliation, and wishing she could go to Parallaxis with her father—but her mother will never allow it.

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Directed by Lana Wachowski Written by Lana Wachowski, David Mitchell, and Aleksandar Hemon

1999 was a year of fear of Y2K and a film that blew everyone's minds called The Matrix. That film introduced us to a world run by the machines and humans were merely batteries. The only other film franchise that was as bleak as this was the Terminator series. The film also broke the boundaries of CGI with a inventive camera technique called “bullet time”. A 360 degree etupf of cameras would catch and spin around the action and create a unique slow motion effect. This was simply groundbreaking in 1999. Granted today you get to see that in football replays, but give credit to the Matrix films for bringing that to life. This film was eagerly anticipated and fans of the series, myself included. Was interested in how they would bring back these characters and what new CGI tricks are up their sleeves. Sadly you don't get much way of story except for a ton of flashbacks. High expectations will never be met with this film. No fancy new CGI or film technique to see either. Disappointing.

Here comes the spoilers.

Right off the bat we are thrown into the first scene from the first film being watched like some sort of memory reel being replayed. Yet things are slightly off and different. Two hackers are watching this and wondering what is going on. Then we are taken to Tom Anderson (Neo) who is now a game creator of a successful game called “The Matrix” which is essentially all the events of the series in a video game. Kudos to this being a very meta type thing to do and easy way to trick Tom/ Neo into forgetting who he was by making this all in his head. Agent

Smith (Jonathan Groff) is now the boss at the gaming company. The machines have changed their 'skins' so they do not look like what they used to. Supposedly 60 years have passed since the Machine War when Neo and Trinity died to save the humans at Zion. Now humans want to free more people that are trapped in the Matrix, but the elders form the Machine War want to keep the brokered peace. It isn't long before the young hackers get to Neo and he takes the red pill and he is back form the 'real' Matrix. Yet he discoverers that Trinity is still inside and he now wants to get her out. Met with resistance he and the young hackers go inside anyway to try to get her. We get a huge fight scene, but most of the action is blurry and too zoomed in to tell what is going on. Just a mess. No neat camera effects or ground breaking CGI gets introduced here. I think most audiences were waiting for something spectacular to leave the theater talking about just to be disappointed. Not to give away more spoilers, but former enemies temporarily join forces to help Neo take Trinity out of the Matrix. In a sequence that brings back horrible memories of 9-11 we get people falling out the sky to their deaths. Horrific, and yet it gets too easy to forget these are simply Machine controlled 'bots'. I honestly think the writers seriously needed to play a bit more dangerously with the enemy of my enemy is my friend motif here. What we needed was another Neo versus Agent Smith battle royale with some ground breaking effects to wow us as it used to back in 1999. The only nice surprise is Trinity having the same powers as Neo and being able to fly. Seeing them bring most of the band back together was nice, but nothing new special effects wise is extremely disappointing. Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’. www.cpmagazine.net

LEO

March is a dreamy month for you, dear Ram, as the sun makes its way through Pisces and activates your solar twelfth house. The season of the Fish gives you a chance to fantasize about your future, and the universe is encouraging you to dream big! These vibes also allow you to embark upon some serious healing, though you’ll need to be real with yourself, especially when it comes to identifying behavioral patterns. While twelfth house activity can be heavy at times, you should ultimately feel fairly optimistic thanks to a cosmic alliance between the sun and Jupiter on March 5. Major inspiration might find you when the sun cozies up to visionary Neptune on the thirteenth. Your psyche could be flooded with brilliant ideas, though you’ll need to make sure you stay grounded and practical as well. It would be easy to romanticize almost any area of your life in this cosmic climate, which could be dangerous if you get too swept up in a fantasy or begin to ignore red flags in your relationships. Before getting caught up in your daydreams, remember to ask yourself if the outcome you envision is practical and how you’ll get there.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS You could be in a compassionate and generous mood this month, sweet Bull, as the sun makes its way through sensitive Pisces. The temptation to help others fix their issues is real right now, but you need to be mindful that you’re not giving too much of your energy to others, especially if they aren’t grateful for it. It’s also worth remembering that you can’t save people from themselves, no matter how clearly you see the solutions to their problems. Make an effort to gravitate toward people who are stable in their own lives, so you can direct your efforts toward community service or humanitarian organizations that speak to you on a soul level. No matter how wrapped up you get in the lives of your family and friends, you’ll want to make sure you’re carving out some time for yourself. The Virgo full moon on March 18 shines a light in the sector of your chart that rules fun and self-expression, giving you a chance to prioritize your desires. Use this lunar event as an excuse to let your hair down with friends who won’t drag you down with their baggage, or opt to spend the evening at home working on a creative project.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI You’ll be able to break through professional barriers this month as the sun makes its way through expansive Pisces, activating the sector of your chart that governs career. Your colleagues and superiors could be more emotionally open than usual, dear Gemini, so use these vibes to develop your professional relationships. A nurturing attitude toward your co-workers can help you gain the devotion of the people you work with, boosting your popularity at the office. However, you could be more sensitive than usual, so remember not to take on more than you can handle. Meanwhile, the new moon on March 2 is the perfect time to strategize about your future because your ruling planet Mercury forms a cosmic alliance with pragmatic Saturn. And your hard work is likely to pay off when Mercury cozies up to auspicious Jupiter on the twentieth. Don’t be afraid to take credit for your work now, and be ready for good news to come your way. The sun makes its way into fiery Aries, so this day also marks the beginning of spring and the astrological new year. This solar placement lights a fire in the sector of your chart that governs community, helping you to gain attention in the weeks ahead.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER March is filled with synchronicities, mysticism, and magic as the sun travels through Pisces, illuminating the sector of your chart that governs spirituality. Connecting with the universe should be a priority right now, especially when the new moon manifests on March 2. This day is one of the most sacred of the year for you, little Crab, so be sure to take a few moments to commune with the life force that exists within and around you. Your manifestation skills also benefit from a nice boost, making it important that you set your intentions and let the other side know where you could use some help. The twelfth brings a flurry of good vibes your way as the Cancer moon shares supportive aspects with Jupiter and Neptune. Your dreams can grow into reality in this cosmic climate, so don’t be afraid to approach the world with optimism. The karma points you score now are also sure to bring big rewards down the road, so be sure to embrace good deeds throughout the day. If you’re in the mood to do some candle magic, consider donating to a charitable cause as a way of showing gratitude to the powers that be.

MARCH 2022

March starts with an emotionally intense vibe as the Pisces sun shines a light in your solar eighth house, dear Lion, encouraging energetic exchanges between you and your loved ones. It could be harder to set sustainable boundaries with the people in your life, which might inspire you to leave behind any friends or romantic partners who have become overly difficult in recent months. If you’re not sure you want to say goodbye to someone for good, consider distancing yourself until Aries season. The new moon on March 2 can help you set your intentions around what you hope to grow as the sun and moon align next to lucky Jupiter. However, you might want to get a bit transactional with the universe now, promising to break a bad habit in exchange for assistance with your goals. This is also a great time to reflect on what you need to cut out of your life in order to make way for the new people, hobbies, healthy habits, or relationships you dream of. While Pisces season asks you to rework some situations and connections in your life, the vibe shifts when the sun enters fiery Aries on the twentieth. This cosmic climate lights a fire in the sector of your chart that rules personal philosophies and spirituality, helping you reconnect with your intuition and the world around you.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO If any distance or barriers have manifested in your relationships, they can begin to melt away this month as the Pisces sun shines a light in the sector of your chart that rules love. This powerful astrological period can help you reestablish and strengthen your romantic bonds as you and your partner melt into one another. This energy can also cause you to glamorize situations that might not be in your best interests, so just make sure you’re not slipping into a fantasy. Keep an eye out for red flags, but if the dynamic seems healthy and genuine, feel free to release your inhibitions. If you’re currently single, this cosmic climate allows you to practice some radical self-love, giving you an opportunity to fully accept and adore the person you are. The full moon on March 18 takes place in your sign, dear Virgo, giving you a chance to transform and better yourself. A helpful connection to Pluto supports any mission that requires you to tap into your personal power, so don’t feel guilty about throwing your weight around. You might have to put someone in their place, especially if they’ve bullied you or tried to erode your confidence in the past.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA You might feel like there are more hours in the day right now, dear Libra, but only if you take a proactive approach to organizing your schedule and establishing routines. With the Pisces sun shining in your solar sixth house, it’s also important that you get to bed and wake up at a reasonable hour. You might even want to consider rising a bit earlier than usual so you can get a jump on your tasks. The more you check off your to-do list each day, the more emotionally fulfilled you’ll feel as you find ways to take control of your life and circumstances. Just try not to interfere with other people’s habits even if you’re sure that your advice would help them reach their highest potential. People are sensitive to criticism, so it would be best to lead by example versus trying to force your ideas on them. March 5 brings a surge of motivation your way as passionate Mars connects with your ruler Venus and they cross into Pisces together. Pay attention to your relationships during this time, and make sure you’re not aligning yourself with someone who doesn’t fully support and encourage you to follow your dreams.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO While Pisces season is highly emotional for some, dear Scorpion, you feel confident, strong, and inspired by the season of the Fish. You’re one of the most organically confident members of the zodiac, which means you’re not afraid to put yourself out there and take a few chances. However, you counter this exuberance with a fierce desire for privacy, which can make it difficult to gauge how and when to come out of your shell. Give yourself permission to go out on a limb—and often—but do yourself a favor and consider exactly what this looks like before moving forward. If you’re hoping to share a passion project with the world, have your most opinionated friend look at it first. If you’re hoping to get closer with your crush, make sure your communication is open and honest so the object of your affection knows where you stand. After all, you’re one of the hardest signs to read, so dating you can be intimidating!

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS The energy in your home should feel much lighter this month as the sun makes its way through Pisces. Use this astrological period to get creative with your interior design, especially if you’re overdue for a domestic facelift. Just make sure you don’t accumulate too many new things or you could end up with clutter rather than convenience. When the sun cozies up to your ruler Jupiter on March 5, take some time to nurture yourself. Your stress will melt away if you give yourself a chance to relax. Don’t feel guilty about putting your needs first, dear Archer, even if you’re tempted to take care of others (which is likely). This planetary alignment also brings a touch of luck your way, so go ahead and light a candle and make a quiet wish to the other side. You’ll benefit from a healthy ego boost as Aries season emerges on the twentieth and the universe puts some weight behind your talents. Now is not the time to hide in the shadows, since almost everyone will be drawn to your aura. Use these vibes to further your artistic goals, even if it’s just to pick up a new hobby. Whatever your agenda is at the moment, your voice and natural talents can help propel you to the top.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN The Pisces new moon on March 2 brings an abundance of lucky, healing, and transformative vibes your way as Venus, Mars, and Pluto collectively align under your sign. If ever there was a time to get serious about reworking your perspective and your life, dear Goat, it would be now. Just don’t expect to see a difference immediately. You’ll need to give yourself a bit of time and space to truly evolve. Fortunately, this cosmic climate acts like a blank canvas for you, giving you the power to change almost any area of your life as long as it’s something your heart truly wants. An alliance between Mercury and your ruler Saturn on that day can help you formulate a solid plan, so be sure to sit down and write out your goals for the next six months. The moon and Venus cozy up to Saturn on the twenty-eighth, bringing growth to your finances. This is a great day to pay off debts or make investments, especially if your intuition tells you it’s a good call. However, if you don’t have to be unreasonably responsible with your money right now, feel free to reward yourself with a little gift. The universe wants you to reap the rewards of all your hard work!

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS The month kicks off with the Pisces new moon on March 2, which puts a spotlight on your bank account. Take some time to analyze your monetary health, dear Water Bearer, since these vibes can bring growth and healing to your personal finances. This theme continues throughout most of the month as the sun journeys through Pisces. Your money can easily grow between now and the twentieth, but if you’re not smart about your spending and investments, it could flow right through your fingers. Major shits come your way when Venus and Mars join hands and cross the threshold into your sign on the fifth. This planetary power couple can help rev up your motivation, but only around goals that fill your heart with inspiration. Whether it’s a move, career change, new look, or return to school that’s at the top of your list, now is the time to put yourself into high gear, since manifestation could come quite easily in the coming weeks. The sun and Jupiter canoodle in the cosmos, so don’t put off such action for another time. Any new journeys you begin now will be met with a blessing from the universe. With so much change happening in your life, it’s possible that a few mental wires could get crossed as you embark upon this fantastical journey of manifestation. Luckily, things begin to make more sense as spring emerges and the sun enters fiery Aries on March 20.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES With Pisces season in full swing, little Fish, you should be feeling the love from your family, friends, and the other side. The universe is looking for ways to guide and bless you right now, especially during the new moon in your sign on March 2. Use these vibes to think hard about what you want to accomplish in the year ahead, and be sure to send a little birthday wish to the sun and moon. Meanwhile, the cosmos is full of activity as Mercury and Saturn align in your solar twelfth house on that day. This planetary alliance can help you use a logical approach to break unhealthy patterns, and it can also give you the words to set boundaries where needed. We are also blessed with a triple conjunction between Venus, Mars, and Pluto on the third, which puts a focus on your friends and community. If you need to cut ties with anyone in your friendship or social media circle, now would be the time to block and unfriend.
