Revolutionary iLasik Surgery Comes to SA iLasik, the world’s most advanced and only bladeless vision correction technology, is revolutionising vision correction globally, and is now offered by specialised centres in SA. The iLasik procedure is the result of a decade’s worth of technical refinement, combing the latest laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (Lasik) technology in one efficient Lasik procedure. The procedure combines the IntraLase laser with a blade-free approach to creating a corneal flap and Wavescan, thus performing a more precise medical procedure. The iLasik procedure reshapes the cornea so that refracted light focuses accurately on the retina. The technology used in the iLasik procedure is very mature – to date, approximately 32 million Lasik procedures have been performed. All branches of the US military and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently approved Lasik for astronauts, fighter pilots and all of their service people, owing to studies using iLasik technology. Studies have also shown that iLasik surgery results in improved night vision, better than contact lenses or glasses can offer, without any night glare, which was a common side effect of previous Lasik technologies. Why use iLasik? The precision of the laser used in iLasik eliminates virtually all of the most severe, sight-threatening complications arising from the tradiditional blade surgery and gives the surgeon unparalleled control over the flap. The most advanced iLasik technology eliminates the possibility of human error, offering the safest form of refractive surgery with a more accurate visual result, making it the fastest-growing refractive surgical technique in the world today. During the iLasik procedure, it is typical that both eyes are treated during the same visit. The iLasik procedure generally takes less than 10 minutes per eye. The iLasik procedure is approved for patients 21 years and older. Ninety-eight percent of mildly to moderately nearsighted patients participating in the CustomVue clinical trials submitted to the FDA in the US could see 20/20 or better one year after treatment. CustomVue scan The iLasik procedure incorporates the CustomVue scan, which allows the measurement and treatment of image aberration beyond those corrected with spectacles and contact lenses. These advances have enhanced the level of safety and the achievement of even more accurate results. Each potential candidate is examined for corneal thickness, eye curvature, baseline eye health and realistic expectations for seeking laser refractive surgery. The individual cornea is customised to provide the highest statistical chance of 20/20 vision. CustomVue scans use the individual’s cornea as a reference and build on that to allow for the best potential for success. Woza Moya Project aims to povide quality community care and support for people infected and affected by HIV and Aids. By making available home-based care, orphan intervention and food secutiry, Woza Moya intends alleviating hunger, poverty and suffering through a holistic and integrated approach. The Woza Moya team focuses on stregthening support services in the community and at present services about 600 families in 8 communities in the Ufafa regions. Plans to extend this programme are entirely dependant on funding available. Our vision for the Woza Moya Community Centre is to have one more building alongside the present one. This would be a Play Therapy Centre accommodating support groups while also prividing a safe and caring environment for orphaned and vulnerable children. Tsogang Sechaba Community Project is a non-governmental, nonprofitable and non-racial organization. The Truth About Smoking What most people don’t know – least of all your average smoker – is that smoking is a very complex behaviour. It has many aspects most of which are deeply bound to the smoker’s emotions and psychology. Habit and addiction are just two aspects of which much has been said and written, and these are the easiest to deal with. Not much has ever been written in the media about the emotional and psychological aspects which are far more difficult for a smoker to overcome without help. Nicotine is powerfully addictive. Research has shown that a teen can become addicted from smoking just one cigarette. Initially, the addiction will make new smokers smoke again and again, and more and more, but very soon they discover that when they feel bad a cigarette will give them a lift, so they feel better. Very soon the cigarette has become an integral part of teenagers’ emotional support system and will become ever more entrenched in their emotional life. When smokers stop smoking, they recover from the addiction very quickly. Most of the discomforts that smokers experience are to do with a chemical imbalance in the brain which also passes quite soon if treated properly. The misery that most smokers endure is mostly due to a feeling of insecurity engendered by the loss of their emotional support and, psychologically, to the fact that they have to change identity overnight. Stopping smoking is not for sissies! It takes great courage to change a familiar life pattern and identity at the deep level that a smoker needs to, and to face it all without help, knowledge and understanding. Giving up smoking is one thing. Living as a free non smoker in control of your life is something else completely. The Smokenders programme deals very gently with smokers over a period of seven weekly meetings. Enjoy Clear Vision Under Water Superior LASIK Flaps To correct vision with the iLasik procedure a thin Lasik flap needs to be created. There are two ways to make this flap: using a blade or the IntraLase FS laser. The iLasik procedure uses the IntraLase laser exclusively; it is a major component of what makes iLasik vision correction unique. Eighty-one percent of patients choose bladeless Lasik over traditional Lasik with a blade when given the choice, research has shown. The IntraLase method is a 100% blade-free technique used to perform the critical first step in the Lasik procedure; creating the corneal flap.The creation of the corneal flap prepares the eye for the second step of the Lasik procedure, where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision. The IntraLase method uses tiny, rapid pulses of laser light to create the corneal flap – instead of using a metal blade – during the first step of the Lasik procedure. Each pulse of light passes through the top layers of the cornea and forms a microscopic bubble at a specific depth and position within the eye. These are determined by the doctor. The IntraLase laser moves back and forth across the eye, creating a uniform layer of bubbles just beneath the corneal surface. Just prior to applying the laser vision correction, the doctor creates the corneal flap by gently separating the tissue where these bubbles have formed. The corneal flap is then folded back so that the second step of the treatment can follow. With the IntraLase method, a blade never touches the eye. The benefits of the IntraLase method include: • Better outcomes: Patients report faster recovery, fewer Lasik flap related complications and fewer induced higher order aberrations. • Ability to tailor the procedure to the patient’s eye: everything from the diameter of the flap to the angle of its edges can be precisely determined. Having a corneal flap that’s individualised to the patient contributes to excellent postoperative outcomes. In addition, a corneal flap created with the IntraLase method ‘locks’ back into position after the Lasik procedure is performed.
