Xeikon enjoys success at Labelexpo South China 2014 Xeikon’s high quality and high productivity digital label technology is helping Asian printers meet the rapidly-expanding variable data printing needs Xeikon reports a successful conclusion to its presence at Labelexpo South China that took place early December in Guangzhou. Being the only mainstream manufacturer of high quality, high productivity digital label presses at the show, the company was able to mark a strong presence which showed its full dedication and commitment to the Asian label industry. “Diversification’ is a word that you often hear nowadays wherever you go and Asia is no exception,” comments Bent Serritslev, Managing Director Xeikon Asia Pacific (ASPAC). “The Chinese market is experiencing a tremendous boom in the production of all types of short-run labels, but specifically those that require variable data information, such as barcoding, QR coding or other product and brand security features like microprint. We were extremely happy to engage with visitors to Labelexpo South China and show them exactly how the Xeikon digital label presses and

solutions are able to meet their digital manufacturing needs.” Combining superior printing quality with optimal flexibility On display at Labelexpo South China was the Xeikon 3030, the narrow web entry-level press of the Xeikon 3000 Series. It is meant for label converters looking to foray into the digital production of labels. In addition to prime label applications, the press is also suitable for producing promotional and transfer applications. With a variable web width ranging from 200 mm (7.9 inches) up to 330 mm (13 inches), it runs at a top speed of 9.6 m/min (31.5 ft/min) and can handle production volumes of up to 190 square meters/hour (294.5 MSI/ hour). With five press models, the 3000 Series is the largest range of digital label press offerings on the market today, ranging from entry level to higher capacity options. All five models deliver the

Bent Serritslev same 1200 DPI imaging quality and are able to print on an unrivalled range of substrates without pre-coating or pre-treatment, including various self-adhesive materials such as coextruded films, BOPP, PVC and PET, transparent/opaque films as well as paperboards. The full-rotary printing technology with variable repeat length guarantees that the press speeds are not affected by the label size and/or the number of colors used. Also included is the Xeikon X-800 Digital Front-End which can be integrated into any production environment. Its modular setup allows label and packaging converters to efficiently manage their specific production needs. The X-800 also enables the easy implementation of variable data on labels or packages, even allowing to add variable information after the files have been ripped. The combination of the variable data capabilities and the top-notch printing quality, i.e. the use of micro texts, variable barcodes or numbers, the ability to print guilloches or the use of specific colors and security toners, makes the Xeikon 3000 Series an excellent tool for the brand protection of labels and packages. Finally, the Xeikon 3000 Series presses also use the QA-I toner, which meets FDA guidelines for direct and indirect food contact.

Fuji Xerox Launches Next Generation Managed Print Services in the Asia-Pacific Region As the leader in managed print services market, Fuji Xerox is launching Next Generation Managed Print Services (MPS) —moving MPS beyond optimisation of printing environment to evolving services that support clients optimise document-related work processes with enhanced security in mobile and cloud environment. The services are already available in the Asia Pacific region, including Japan. Fuji Xerox brings a solution with Next Generation MPS, which realises an environment where users can effectively and securely obtain required information when and wherever needed. Its service roadmap segments the document-related processes in three stages—assesses and optimise, secure and integrate, as well as automate and simplify—to enhance clients’ document-related workflows for a smoother communication, and allow Next Generation MPS to continuously evolve. In each stage, the services using new tools can be implemented according to the maturity of the client’s office environment. In addition to operation and management of the printing environment, Fuji Xerox conducts periodic review of the services and provides support for further improvement. Stage 1: Assess and Optimize Optimises client’s printing environment by capturing the total cost of ownership, user status, power consumption, and so on, to reduce cost and environmental load. Here, Fuji Xerox introduces new analytical tools to capture user printing status such as operational performance,

output cost and environmental load. The tools visually present client’s operating status including print volume and operating costs in comparison with other departments or industry standards, and offer what-if scenarios to enhance the work environment. Moreover, it sets management and user policies to establish the best-fit printing environment. Stage 2: Secure and Integrate Enhances security and manages printers in whatever environment documents are utilised—in offices, mobile, or cloud. After the client’s printing environment is optimised in Stage 1, the service enhances security and manages printers in various environment—offices, print rooms, mobile and cloud. Specifically, clients can configure detailed printer settings—for example, allocate the upper limit to print in colour by person, or allow a limited group to print confidential documents— by using enhanced management functions such as user authentication, print management based on individual user rules, and allocation of printer costs by department. The tools are effective across client’s existing user authentication system as well as nonFuji Xerox devices.

Stage 3: Automate and Simplify Automates client’s work processes and boosts productivity using unique

Digital Technology approaches to analyze their documentrelated workflow. Based on the data collected from the environment established in Stage 1 and 2, Fuji Xerox identifies which work process relies heavily on paper. The service captures both quantitative—print volumes and devices—and qualitative data to analyse and visualise why the paperbased documents are printed and how they are shared/distributed. Next, the service determines inefficient work processes, and suggests how client can raise efficiency to quickly communicate required information by digitising their paper-based processes and automating their workflow. Not only digitised documents, but also documents created in tablets, smartphones and other sources are seamlessly shared, saved and converted in this environment. Fuji Xerox stays engaged with the services by conducting periodic reviews to keep client’s optimum work environment. “MPS has been implemented in the

market for several years now, and some companies that have already introduced MPS expect vendors to provide next step proposals,” said Eiji Ishida, analyst, Imaging, Printing & Document Solutions of IDC Japan. “As the recent trend noteworthy, mobile and cloud technologies are about to be utilised to actually solve work issues evolving from the previous stage where they had to solve their own issues to become widely used. IDC considers that the integration of mobile and cloud into the workflow optimisation is required for the future MPS. Fuji Xerox’s Next Generation MPS is offering solutions in such new environment, and we expect that their new services will bring the MPS to the next stage.” While the advancement of IT has changed work styles and brought flexible work environment, it has generated new issues such as how to maintain corporate governance, enhance security, and streamline work processes that have become more complex. Enterprises today are in need

of efficient and secure work processes. “One of our strengths is the capability to provide consistent services worldwide together with Xerox," said Masashi Sakamoto, president, Fuji Xerox Global Services. “We boast top market share and lead the MPS market in the Asia Pacific region, and have gained vast experience with our customers to date. With this new service, we would like to become our customers’ stronger partner who can support and solve their management issues.” Since the launch of Managed Print Services in Japan and the Asia Pacific region in 2007, Fuji Xerox has led the MPS market, holding 56 percent share in Japan and 35.6 percent share worldwide (sales base as of 2013). Fuji Xerox supports clients take control of information and achieve continuous business growth through Next Generation MPS that offer services beyond management of printers.

Rung Silp Leads Thailand to Victory The Thai company chalked up the most wins for the nation at the Asian Print Awards 2014. Sha Jumari reports. Thailand held strong to its title as print champions at the 12th Asian Print Awards with 31 wins under its belt. Although the win was a collective effort by many individual Thai companies, Rung Silp Printing Co. Ltd. was one of the frontrunners of the pack. Rung Silp swept up five awards in total, including a prestigious Platinum Sponsor trophy. It also received the Silver award for categories Postcards, Greeting & Invitation Cards and Packaging. In addition, the company won the Bronze for Digital Color Proofing and Limited Edition & Artwork Reproductions. “We are proud to receive these awards. It demonstrates the effort, the intention and dedication of all the staff,” said Apichart Chivatxaranukul, managing director, Rung Silp Printing. “We will strive to continue developing in our print quality.” The entry that won the Fuji Xerox Platinum Sponsor trophy for Best Use of the Digital Printing Process is a Gift Box for Isuzu MU-X. The gift box, meant for the customers of Isuzu, stood out for its high level of personalisation. “The Isuzu MU-X Gift Box contains a diary, a note from the CEO, and a box set, and these are all personalised. Even the vehicle colour on the box cover is customised, depending on the cars of the customers,” said Chivatxaranukul. The names of the customers are printed not just on the box, but also on the covers and in all pages of the diary. Due to the high personalisation of the gift boxes, extreme prudence and precision had to be carried out throughout the print production processes.

“The challenge is that because of the high personalisation, there is a need for the production team to carefully monitor all process and ensure the fault to be absolutely zero,” Chivatxaranukul highlighted. “Of course, quality control had to be put in place, from extracting information from the database, during the prepress and production process, up till delivery to the customers.” The recognition lauded by the Fuji Xerox trophy has spurred Rung Silp to expand its packaging production business. The company currently specialises in producing premium books, magazines, calendars and brochures. A keen award participant since 2011, Rung Silp has over 60 years of experience in the print industry. The established company describes itself as being a printing consultancy that acts as a one-stop shop for print services. It provides services in prepress, press

and afterpress, including binding, stitching, laminating, coating, die cutting and hot stamping. “We only use the most advanced machinery in every production process so that we can satisfy the needs of our customers in every way that we can,” Chivatxaranukul added with pride. Rung Silp currently uses color management system from GMG, printers from Epson and CTP by Screen for its prepress stage. For its press machinery, the company uses Heidelberg and Goss. Postpress, Rung Silp uses equipment form Kolbus and Muller. “Thank you to the Asian Print Awards team for organising this contest, and inspiring the print industry to continue to develop print quality,” said Chivatxaranukul. “We know it is never easy to decide on winners, so we would like to thank the judges for taking the time to select from a portfolio from individual countries.”

BusAds Makes Waves with Underwater Decal Fresh from its Gold win at Asian Print Awards 2014, BusAds Pte Ltd’s swimming pool sticker decal blows its competition out of the water. Sha Jumari reports.

Singapore-based BusAds Pte Ltd took home the Gold and the only award for the Digital Outdoor, Large Format & Signage category at the recent Asian Print Awards 2014. This year marks

the third year of participation for the outdoor display specialists. 2012 was the company’s inaugural year of participation, when it walked away

with Silver. Last year, the company came back bigger and better to impress the judges with its aeroplane decal. This time, BusAds won not just the Gold, but also the EFI’s Platinum Sponsor award for Best in Digital Wide Format. For this year’s edition, BusAds did not disappoint; it took home the Gold for the third year running. “We thank the Asian Print Awards, for being a credible and prestigious platform to be recognised on. This is our third year, and we are awarded the Gold again,” said Alvin Yapp, corporate affairs director, BusAds Pte Ltd. “I’m humbled, honoured and proud, that year on year, we’ve managed to innovate and explore different ways to push the envelope on what outdoor media can, and should be,” Yapp continued. “Outdoor advertising is very interesting. It’s growing by the years and you can see more spaces opening up. Really the sky is the limit in what we make outdoor to be.” The company’s winning submission is an underwater decal sticker printed digitally for the swimming pool of local educational institution, Singapore Polytechnic (SP). The standout for this entry was that it was installed while no water was removed; a process Yapp and his team took pains to perfect. “We have a wonderful bunch of people who persevere and are not afraid of failure,” Yapp continued, crediting his staff for the win. “We want to be

recognised as innovative, to be the best in the field that we are in. It is our company culture in wanting to always push boundaries and create something new, that sets us apart from our competitors.” “We have already started looking at what we can present for next year’s awards that can blow the minds of the judges away,” Yapp continued. “Last year we hit the skies, this year we hit the waters. So what’s next for BusAds? When there’s the opportunity to do a decal in space… we’ll be the first one up there!” Underwater Untapped In space constraint Singapore, media space is precious commodity that is costly. Additionally, the available media space in the city-state is often already filled with many distracting signages. When brainstorming on space that would be untouched and untapped, Yap realised that despite the lack of physical space in Singapore, there is an abundance of swimming pools. “Besides public pools, there are pools in schools, hotels, and condominiums. These are spaces that are readily available. The challenge of course is how do we use this space that no one has thought of,” said Yapp. “In Singapore, it is very costly to remove water out from the pools, and this is why most pools don’t replace the water; it actually gets filtered.”

holding a corner of each sticker. We moved it from the dry land area, and slowly sink it underwater, much like a submarine, before securing it down onto the base of the pool.”

BusAds spent the past couple of years experimenting ways to install decals underwater, without needing to remove the water. The company did trials on pools in private condominiums first, before getting SP to consent to the decal. The BusAds staff actually had to undergo diving certification before installing the decal, because the pool was 3 metres deep.

The decal needed to be handled very carefully otherwise it can easily crumple or stick to itself. In terms of positioning, the BusAds team had to exercise extreme accuracy because unlike typical decals above water, it is hard to adjust, even if it is by one inch. The parallax error in water also had to be taken into account.

Yapp explained the installation process for the SP decal: “The sticker is fairly large, so we had four of our guys, each

“I dare say this is the first in the world – to be able to install a decal underwater without having to remove the water at all!” Yapp said.

“Due to the depth of the installation, we need something that is larger than life. The visual cannot be vague; it has to be interactive and engaging. We

cannot recommend too much text, or very detailed visuals,” said Yapp. Being able to put decals underwater presents a host of new opportunities for BusAds. The decals can also be installed on the side of walls, so themed places such as water parks can be more creative with their décor. “What’s even more exciting now is that we can use the underwater decals for commercial purposes, such as a launch of underwater watches, waterproof handphones, and healthcare,” Yapp continued. When pressed on the material used for the decal, Yapp was coy. “There are two parts to this, first is the method to do the installation. The second is finding the right material. We’ve found the material that can adhere to such a process… and that is trade secret,” he laughed.

Fully automated packaging production in northern China Extensively automated print production including substrate logistics is currently somewhat of a novelty in Chinese printshops. Therefore when packaging producer Tianjin Huiyuan opened its press room doors as part of an open house it attracted huge crowds. Some 100 packaging pros came to the event in northern China in November. This longstanding KBA sheetfed offset customer located in a town bearing the same name has several Rapidas, including two new highly automated Rapida 106s which are all integrated in automated pile logistics. Tianjin Huiyuan installed its first sheetfed offset press from KBA in

2002. Today a grand total of seven Rapidas are in operation at the company including a half-format Rapida 75, a large-format Rapida 142 and a fleet of high-performance Rapida 106s. Founded in 1997 by Lv Junqiang the firm produces packaging for the food and pharmaceutical industries, electronics companies and other branches

Tianjin Huiyuan has made fast job changes, streamlined integrated processes and a high level of quality its motto. Automated pile logistics reduce manual efforts to a minimum and contribute considerably to increasing productivity and economy. The two newest Rapida 106 presses run at speeds of up to 18,000sph, are raised and feature a host of automated features ensuring short makeready times. These include DriveTronic SIS sidelay-free infeed, automated plate changing, DriveTronic SRW simultaneous inking unit washing and combined CleanTronic cleaning systems for impression cylinders, blankets and rollers. Colour density measurement is done at the ErgoTronic console with wallscreen via ErgoTronic ColorDrive. Furthermore the presses are kitted out with ErgoTronic ACR for register control, a separate DensiTronic Professional measuring desk, LogoTronic Professional for production management with JDF interface for exchanging data with the company’s MIS.

Tianjin Huiyuan is the first Chinese Rapida user to implement fully automated pile logistics. Interest in the event was therefore great

Manufacture HuigHaverlag Printing is an advanced print service provider based in Wormerveer, just north of Amsterdam, focused on offering excellent print quality and superb service to satisfy the needs of clients operating in the retail sector. Founded in 1902, the company was taken over in 1995 by the current owner and director, Chris Knip. Having spent 25 years as technical director of three major newspapers in The Netherlands, Chris was fully aware of the importance of hitting deadlines, and applied this philosophy to the retail market with positive results. Since 1902, HuigHaverlag has expanded its team from 30 to 100 employees and grown its turnover from 2.4 to approximately 16 million Euros. In 2002 the company took over ‘Haverlag’, a print business specialised in high quality commercial printing for advertising agencies, and continuously invested in both offset and digital print technologies to meet its customers’ needs.

Chris continues: “When we first saw the press in November 2013, we were amazed with the speed and print quality it could deliver, which was notably better than the toner presses we were used to, and signed a deal at Ipex 2014. Last summer, we installed the new second generation of the press, the Jet Press 720S.”

Chris Knip explains: “In 2000, we started exploring the production of print personalised for each retail shop, and developed our own personalisation software. We also used a variety of digital presses to implement our strategy and a B2 format digital press was the missing link, so we were particularly interested in Fujifilm’s Jet Press 720 when we heard about it.”

Chris clarifies: “We invested in a Jet Press 720S because of its ability to produce ultra-high quality print, together with its reliability and ease of use. Digital print technologies have traditionally been very time consuming to maintain, but we are confident that the design of the Jet Press 720S, which is based on an offset chassis, will offer higher up-time. We also expect to win

HuigHaverlag’s plan is to transfer some of the applications currently printed offset to the Jet Press 720S, with the company starting with a single shift and potentially moving to 2 shifts from January 2015. With B2 finishing equipment already being used to finish their offset print, a B2 digital press was the natural next step.

more work because of the digital print quality we can now achieve.” HuigHaverlag was also keen to comply with the ISO 12647-2 offset standard, so that whether print is produced on offset presses or the Jet Press 720S, the appearance would match. The investment in Fujifilm’s XMF ColorPath colour management software will help the company to maintain colour integrity across different print processes. One of the applications to be run on the Jet Press 720S is retail pricing cards, with every sheet being different and run lengths of 5,000 to 15,000 sheets being typical. Digitally printing these on a B2 sheet maximises the efficiencies of this process and allows HuigHaverlag to print the pricing tickets in the order they will be used in the shop and also turn the jobs around more quickly, a perfect solution for their retail customers. The press will also be used for a mixture of general high quality commercial print work.

KBA Commander CL in operation also at Guiyang Daily in China Founded in 1957 the Guiyang Daily Media Group, a Chinese printing and publishing house located in a city bearing the same name, invested in newspaper press technology from KBA for the first time in 2006. Back then the group chose a KBA Comet with six printing towers and three folders. Efficient technology and good print quality delivered by KBA newspaper presses paved the way for the firm’s sustained expansion. Along with products published by the group itself, numerous contract titles were won on the market. Six years after firing up the first web press the newspaper house reaffirmed its partnership with KBA by placing an order for a Commander CL, also equipped for heatset printing. The double-width newspaper press, which has also proven popular in Europe and North America, is now operational. The Guiyang Daily Media Group invested in print once again despite the effects of the shift from print to online media, also noticeable in China. The group publishes five daily newspapers and three magazines, and is also active within the internet sector. Their two most important titles are the Guiyang Daily and the Guiyang Evening News. The latter, with a daily circulation of 280,000 copies, is the most popular newspaper in the region and distinguishes itself from competitors in terms of quality. Together with an experienced project team at the Guiyang Daily Media Group a custom-made double-width KBA Commander CL (cylinder circumference: 1,092mm/43in) was configured with two four-high towers, two reelstands, a hot-air dryer and two jaw folders. Instead of a double folder the new Commander CL features two single folders, which is rare in China. Both four-high towers can thus operate independently from each other. The flexible superstructure allows for the handling of a variety of web widths

at the touch of a button. The press has been equipped with a heatset dryer ensuring that the group’s own magazine-like titles can be produced in-house. Printing house director Feng Xiao Ping: “We aim to tap into new markets with our new press.” The press’ RollerTronic roller locks are unique in China. They allow the rollers to be set automatically for an optimum

print quality within minutes. Automatic washing systems also contribute to short makeready times. Guiyang Daily is proud of its cuttingedge KBA Commander CL and the excellent collaboration with KBA. “With our new all-rounder we will be one step ahead of the competition once again and able to set new benchmarks in the Chinese newspaper industry”, says Feng Xiao Ping. Along with the installation of the new press, the whole package also includes moving the existing KBA Comet to the new printing plant which was built under the supervision of Feng Xiao Ping in record time. The move is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Held at the ballroom of Pullman Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 10-11 November, AFTA 2014 successfully closes on 11 November with an enthralling award ceremony. This year’s edition saw entries from all over the region. Although both India and Thailand took home seven awards, India was a stronger force as it won the most Golds for the night. India’s Letra Graphix single-handedly swept the competition to win the bulk of the night’s awards, including the much-coveted ultimate Judges’ award for Best in Show. The company bagged Golds for Narrow Web Flexible categories in both Paper and Film and Flexo Process, and managed a Silver for Combination Printing. The Partnership That Wins Awards Malaysia’s GS Paper & Packaging shone bright at AFTA 2014 thanks to the triumphant collaboration with its customer, Sony. Sha Jumari reports. At the recently concluded AFTA Excellence Awards 2014, GS Paper & Packaging Malaysia Sdn Bhd returned to win not just the Gold medal, but also the ultimate Judges Best in Show trophy. This year, the company’s collaboration with Sony EMCS Malaysia was one of the highlights of the ceremony. “We feel very happy and proud, as well as excited and very much confident with AFTA’s recognition on our printing quality,” said Ooi CH, Executive Vice President, GS Paper & Packaging. GS Paper & Packaging has been an unfailing participant of AFTA since 2009, wining Gold awards every year. When asked on how GS Paper & Packaging has managed to score big at the awards every year, Ooi said: “Our entries were submitted based on new developments during the current year. The selections are based on overall challeng-

ing design and print quality expectations. Before submitting to AFTA, we always get consent and approval from our customer.” “From here, we hope to double our marketing strategies to build upon the recognition accorded by AFTA. This award has served to bring up the confidence level from both our internal team as well as external customers,” Ooi beamed. The entry was packaging for Sony Audio products, printed on coated white board. The submission won the company a Gold in the Post Print Corrugated category. Judges also bestowed the Best in Show trophy for the flexo category. “Sony is our long term business partner, and both of us believe that having high print quality is very important. It is part of promotion of the products to the end-consumer,” said Ooi. The secret to success for the company lies in achieving the perfect balance between customer requests and its team of specialists and machinery. “Our biggest challenge is how to

strike the optimum balance between the customer’s high print quality expectations versus the maximum achievable capability of our printers. This way, we aim to have the final print output as best as we can for our customers, without too much compromise,” said Ooi. “Our development of high graphics printing starts from the very beginning – by having detailed discussions and negotiations with our customer, print plate supplier and our own experienced technical and production teams,” Ooi continued. “Additionally, we continually keep our printing machines in tip-top condition in order to produce consistently high quality prints at all times,” said Ooi. He added to say that the company currently owns two units of high graphics printers. Besides machine maintenance, it is not just about having the right team of highly skilled and experienced operators. Communication and teamwork is also essential in the formula to success. “Good teamwork, communication and working closely with the customer’s designer, plate supplier as well as our own technical team. This is essential, as success is a team effort,” said Ooi. “We would like to convey our allround congratulations to our team effort. We would like to continuously look at latest printing technology and upgrade the skills of our operators to take up further challenges in highgraphics print quality and output,” Ooi ended off with aplomb.

Underdog Tin Thanh Scores BIG at AFTA 2014 Vietnam-based Tin Thanh Packing emerged the winner for its category, Films Reverse Print, edging out strong Thai competition. The company is one to look out for, as its win is impressive considering AFTA 2014 marks the first year of its participation. Sha Jumari reports. This year’s AFTA 2014 Gold win was an astounding achievement for Batico Tin Thanh Packing Joint Stock Company, as it was also the inaugural participation for the company. Tin Thanh came out tops for its category, Films Reverse Print, amidst strong competition from Thailand. “We are honoured and happy to have won the Gold!” gushed Dinh Thi Kim Mai, purchasing manager, Tin Thanh. “We hope the award is motivation for

us to continuously be innovative for our customers, so we can continue to produce excellent packaging and continue our participation in the awards in the coming years.” “This is very surprising for us. Frankly speaking, a couple of years back, we were not as strong as we are, so we didn’t think our submissions will be able to par with the other entries. This year is different, we believe in our products now, which is why I chose to

take part in the awards this year,” added Mai. Tin Thanh’s winning entry for the Excellence Awards was pet care packaging for cat litter. The product was meant for the US market. Pet care packaging is not the easiest packaging to produce, due to sensitivity. Every step of producing the packaging needed to be counter-checked with the client before coming to an end product. “Producing it was not easy, because pet food packaging especially has very high sensitivity to smell. We needed to use low solvent ink,” Mai said, on the challenges faced in producing the packaging. “Colour-wise, the lightfastness has to rest above 12 months, since on the shopfront the

product is expected to be moved around a lot. The quality has to be able to rest for a long period of time.” Founded in 1995, Tin Thanh (www. batico.com) has risen to be one of the top companies in flexible packaging in Vietnam. Tin Thanh is located in Duc Hoa Ha Commune, south of Ho Chi Minh City. The first factory, built according to international standards, covers an area of 18,500 square meters. A second factory is in the works, with a total area of 55,000 square meters. “A strong point for our company is our focus on quality. We use good machines, high quality inks, and most importantly, we have good, skilled operators to run the production,” said Mai. Tin Thanh uses print machinery from Japan’s Fuji Kikai and high quality ink from Germany. The company’s current capacity is 80% domestic, and 20% export to Europe, Canada, the US, and within Asia, including Japan. Some of its multinational clients include Nestle, Bayer, Henkel, DuPont, CP and Walmart. “Winning at AFTA is the first international award we have received and this is great for our clients too, because the award is testament to our focus on quality.”

we see digital printing being extremely beneficial for us,” added Mai. While digital printing is on the horizon for Tin Thanh, Mai is not rushing into investing in it just as yet, citing Vietnam’s relatively undeveloped business structure as a reason. ORIS

“Five years down the road, we hope to have digital printing as part of our production line. Part of our planning now is to have digital and be able to leverage on the new technology to target the pharmaceutical market,” said Mai. Mai went on to say that while her customers are not specifically requesting for digital printing, they do demand very short lead times. She noticed there are increasing requests for lead times of four to five days, from the day artwork is submitted, to the day the company sends out the finished products. “For gravure printing, preparing the cylinder itself takes at least four to seven days. This is where

“Vietnam is still a developing country. Unlike Malaysia or Thailand, we do not have easy access to every service. If we want something, ink for the digital printers for example, we would need to import. This requires some lead time. That’s one of our concerns,” said Mai.

The option, which can be retrofitted at any time, is attractive for customers who are versatile in the field of print finishing and offer both saddle stitching and perfect binding in house. In the future, they can simply pre-gather book blocks at the saddle stitcher and then transfer them manually to the perfect binder, thereby increasing their productivity considerably, especially for relatively short runs. The function is integrated with the control system of the saddle stitcher and available as a software option. Existing saddle stitchers can also be retrofitted, without the need for any mechanical modifications. The folded signatures of the book block are placed individually on separate segments of the gathering chain. While the stitching machine is deactivated, the signatures are gathered via a shingle delivery or the Perfetto compensating stacker and delivered (see operating diagram).

Label Converter Suzhou Advance Printing goes digital with first installation of Xeikon 3030Plus Press Suzhou Advance Printing (Yali) Co., a well-known label converter in China has recently successfully installed its first Xeikon 3030Plus Digital Label Press with the help of long-term partner United Printing Co. The Xeikon 3030Plus Digital Press is the narrow web “higher capacity entry-level press and a member of the Xeikon 3000 Series presses. With five press models, the 3000 Series is the largest range of digital label press offerings on the market today, ranging from entry level to higher capacity options. All five models deliver the same 1200 DPI imaging quality and are able to print on an unrivalled range of substrates without pre-coating or pre-treatment, including various selfadhesive materials such as co-extruded films, BOPP, PVC and PET, transparent/opaque films as well as paperboards.

The 3000 Series presses are divided into two maximum web widths (516mm/20.3 inches and 330 mm/13 inches) and three top running speeds (63 FPM, 49.2 FPM and 31.5 FPM). Entry-level versions are also designed to be field-upgraded to the wider and/ or faster specifications as the business needs increase. The full-rotary printing technology with variable repeat length guarantees that the press speeds are not affected by the label size and/or the number of colors used. Also included is the Xeikon X-800 Digital Front End. Based on years of R&D and the pursuit of the best industry standards in terms of digital industrial workflows, the X-800 can be integrated into any production environment and its modular setup allows label and packaging converters to efficiently manage their specific production needs. Finally, the Xeikon 3000 Series presses also use the new QA-I toner, which meets all the applicable FDA guidelines for indirect food contact under room temperature and less severe conditions as well as direct food contact

NEWS PDF preflight and correction integration being offered through the IQconnect – Enfocus Switch Module, we have been able to extend our capabilities even further to a solution that can quickly and easily adapt to these changes.” Filling the gap IQconnect uses Enfocus Switch to automate repetitive tasks and reduces the number of touch points, while using PitStop Server to automatically verify PDF files and correct them when needed. Preflight reports are generated and available within printIQ to inform staff about any issues which impact the quality of the printed result, or which will cause production issues downstream. IQconnect also automates the delivery of proofs, the imposition, and management of print queues. Rowan continues, “There has been a dearth of solutions to support the entirety of the business process in the printing industries. In some cases, print only makes up 30% of the sale. So it’s critical that the MIS of the future be able to extend beyond the current capabilities. The goal at IQ has been to address all of the weak points of the traditional print company with the goal of building an MIS that transitions a business into an efficient and modern print company in today’s print market. Cutting to the chase, automation in print is all about simplifying the rules and implementing process discipline. Automation is code for getting your customers and business systems to do the work for you and allowing technology, your silent business partner, to make you money every step of the way. Now, with more robust automation enabled by the Enfocus integration and IQconnect, printIQ is even more powerful than before.” An important element of the success of this relationship is the symbiotic ethos of both businesses, says Angelo Manno, Enfocus Global Account Manager, Crossroads & OEM: “Both IQ and Enfocus are committed to listening to customer feedback and responding with solutions that mirror market demands to create operational opportunities. This level of cultural alignment is critical to the longterm success of a partnership designed to help customers both innovate and automate.”
