Welcome 9th Asian Print Awards 2011 - The only regional awards of its kind in Asia The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it. Entries submission close on 5th October 2011 at 5pm.

Spectropad, the new portable spectrophotometer for professional digital printing Barbieri has announced the world’s first portable spectrophotometer for professional digital printing. This professional measurement device is built to measure a variety of different media used in professional digital printing including large and wide format printing. Thanks to its independence from a computer it can also be used directly on the printer. The integrated touch display facilitates interaction with the device and gives immediate feedback about the measurement results. It is the ideal tool for all digital print professionals for use away from the desk. Spectropad is the new portable measurement device for all professionals within digital printing including large and wide format printing. Thanks to its large measurement aperture it is able to accurately measure a wide range of different, reflective media. Banner, cardboard, textiles, canvas, PVC, Fine Art Paper, vinyl and Paper are just a few of them. This new wireless, battery powered spectrophotometer can be operated without a computer and therefore directly at the printer, even without cutting the media. Jobs can be stored
in the device and measurement results (if requested) sent through WiFi to the computer. The Spectropad is the first measurement device with Barbieri “qb-technology” inside. This new technology is based on D50 illumination and contains the next generation of highest precision spectral core. The D50 illumination used is based on LED technology by Just Normlicht. It fully matches the new measurement condition M1 introduced with the ISO standard 13655-2009. Thanks to the Barbieri “qb-technology” most precision measurement results will be reached. The touch display makes the operation and job selection a breeze – no matter whether measuring a control bar, a linearization or profiling chart or just a
simple spot colour. The measurement results will immediately be displayed or sent to the computer for further processing. With this portable measurement device Barbieri targets all professionals in digital printing, color management consultants as well as technicians for printer installation. It finally allows using the well-known Barbieri measurement quality away from the desk or at the customer site. Multi-functionality & high productivity Printers can secure their future through innovative Cross Applications and dual plate loading productivity basysPrint announces its new series of 4-page and 8-page UV platesetters. The new UV-Setter 450x and 850x Series open the doors to a range of unique Cross Applications for its customers, helping them to safeguard the future of their businesses. These multi-functional and highly productive UV-Setters were recently introduced to basysPrint’s network of distributors and agents, at an event held at basysPrint’s production plant in Belgium on June 6-7. “Our approach is to develop solutions that will secure the future of our customers’ businesses,” says Christophe Lievens, Director of Sales and Marketing. “The ability to provide an array of innovative applications that will differentiate their offering in an increasingly commodity based industry is of the utmost importance to printers. At basysPrint, we use the name Cross Applications for these unique print effects such as spot varnishes, hot-foil stamping and embossing, as well as processes like die-cutting and screen printing. By enabling our customers to offer these Cross Applications inhouse, we supply them with additional revenue streams and service levels to help them safeguard their continued success.” Cross Applications for profitability and flexibility The new devices extend the success of basysPrint’s existing UV-Setter 450 and 850 Series, and give customers the opportunity to embrace new markets and Cross Applications. Using the UVSetter 450x and 850x Series, printers can now image in-house:
• UV plates for offset printing • Coating plates for spot varnish printing • Photoengraving magnesium or copper plates (up to 10mm thick) for hot-foil stamping and embossing • Screen meshes for all kinds of silk screen printing applications • Dies for flexible die-cutting Higher productivity In addition, the UV-Setter 850x Series deliver higher productivity through a dual plate loading capability that allows to process two plates (up to a maximum size of 445 x 1150 mm) at the same time. This means that the system can image up to 120 plates per hour (470 x 650 mm size). With the new graphical user interface, printers can manage and control their UV-Setters also remotely, even by using Smartphone and tablet type devices. Flexible, modular design The UV-Setter 450x and 850x Series are available with a range of flexible options, from completely manual and semi-automatic versions, right up to fully automatic multi-cassette systems capable of accepting up to five different plate formats from five cassettes, each holding 100 plates. basysPrint UV-Setters expose all UV sensitive plates for all types of printing presses. They have a unique flatbed design and Dynamic Autofocus technology, allowing the UV-Setter 450x and 850x to expose a wide range of different plate types, and handle the various Cross Applications. An integrated punch provides fast, reliable
and register-accurate customer-specific punching before exposure. And the exposure speed can be configured individually by increasing the number of high-performance diode modules (DSI³), enabling plate throughput rates to be more than doubled. As with all basysPrint UV conventional CtP systems, the new platforms also provide the many standard benefits of UV-plate technology. These include high quality imaging, stable, easy to maintain processing with wide processing tolerances, high run length stability even without baking, low energy consumption, and eco-friendly processing chemistry which can be poured down the drain after use, and lasts three times longer than chemistry used with digital plates. International launch event Distributors and agents from around the world were given the chance to learn about the new UV-Setter 450x and 850x Series when they were unveiled for the first time at an event at basysPrint’s production plant in Ieper,. This event focused on the multifunctionality of the new platforms, with demonstrations being given on the 8-up UV-Setter 851x (manual) and 855x (automatic), alongside workshops on utilizing the Cross Applications for relevant markets. Customers can therefore be certain that, wherever they purchase a basysPrint UV-Setter system from, they will receive the highest standards of service and information. The new UV-Setter 450x and 850x Series will be commercially available for customers on 1 November 2011.•

Web to Print – It is the Future for Print I recently attended and spoke at the Xerox Forum, an event run in Berlin by Xerox Europe. I was speaking on a panel and was asked what I would recommend for printers to invest in within the next year. . By Andy Tribute My answer was that I would recommend developing their Internet expertise in the area of web to print to make it easier for customers to work with them, for new customers to find them so improving their sales opportunities, and to make their companies more efficient by automating processes. This message was confirmed last week when I listened to an HP Indigo webinar. For those of you have not listened to webinars these are Internet based presentations where one can listen to a speaker or speakers and watch their presentation slides at the same time. Webinars are like attending a mini conference while staying in the office thus saving both time and costs. One of the speakers at this webinar was Gary Peeling, Managing Director of UK commercial printer, Precision Printing. Precision is a typical, or should I say was, a typical medium sized commercial printer that started in 1966. Up to 2005 it was
a purely litho operation with a range of B2 Heidelberg presses. At that time it had a turnover of £5.5 million and employed 85 staff and took in an average of 45 orders per day with an average order value of £496. They invested in digital with an HP Indigo 5000 press to increase their service to clients. I visited Precision in early 2008 when they were a

Digital Technology
beta tester for the HP Indigo 7000 press. At that time digital complemented the litho printing and they were mainly using digital for just short run colour printing. They had no web to print operations and did only a small amount of variable data printing. Also at that time they did not believe in inline finishing systems and used the same finishing equipment for digital as they did for litho. Today, just three years later Precision Printing is a totally different company, and this is predominantly through a major investment in web to print and digital workflow and integration. The company developed its own workflow, OneFlow, built a partnership with Italian web to print specialist Pixartprinting, and increased its digital printing equipment to four HP Indigo presses. In 2010 the company had a turnover of £12 mil-
lion, more than a 100% increase in five years, and its staff had increased to 120 employees. Litho turnover had remained constant at £6 million despite a major increase in capacity with a 10 unit Heidelberg Speedmaster 74, and with 55 litho orders per day, and the average litho order value had dropped to £432. Digital printing turnover was £6 million with over 10,000 orders per day with an average order value of £2.30. In the 2009 – 2010 year digital print grew 80%, and orders peaked at 25,000 orders per day in the run up to Christmas Gary Peeling attributes this major change and increase to web to print operations for receiving orders and the OneFlow workflow for automating almost all processes to eliminate manual operations. The Pixart link has allowed for integrating online photo brands, greeting cards, general ordering of print for both offset and digital, and working with online print managers’ systems. Precision Printing is showing that small progressive printers can do the same things as major organisations like Vistaprint in automating all processes and having orders created online via the Internet. The systems Precision uses make it easy for customers to buy from them at reasonable prices using their own buying approaches including linking their buying systems directly into Precision’ systems.
Precision Printing is not alone in making this transition or opening up totally new business opportunities by adopting web to print technologies. Vistaprint was perhaps the first company to show what could be done, and they have developed their business hugely every year by mass marketing largely via email. Precision has seen and is seeing major growth through using web to print to create partnerships with other companies. Again this is not new. One of the best examples of building growth through partnerships is Colorcentric in the USA who have built their business on a B2B basis through a range of partnerships with other online companies like Lulu, Snapfish, Blurb and Fujifilm. Colorcentric like Precision built its own workflow Printernet, and they are now using this to build a worldwide franchise where other companies can link into the Colorcentric network to create their own online print operations. Precision used its link with Italian Pixartprinting to enhance its web to print operations. It is interesting to speculate whether Precision will also offer further partnering with its online operations to allow other companies outside the UK to link with them. With that thought in mind it is interesting to recall a quote from John Laacagnina, the CEO of Colorcentric who stated “when something goes digital, it’s going to go global.” •

Benefits of high quality ink-jet European Association, INGEDE, Recognises Xerox iGen4, 700 Digital Color Press and Color 800 Press / Color 1000 Presses
Digital printing has brought about many advantages such as reducing overprint, eliminating storage costs and enhancing accuracy. However, some digital printing processes share one major disadvantage as compared to conventional offset and gravure printing - they lack good deinkability at the paper mill. Deinking, which refers to the removal of printing inks or dry ink from recovered paper, is a key step in the paper recycling process. It is particularly crucial in the production of graphic paper, which requires high paper quality; undeinkable inks can spoil the recycling process by either reducing the brightness of the pulp or by leaving ink specks on the recycled paper. Ingede, a globally recognised association made up from leading European
manufacturers and paper mills, conducts a widely accepted, standardised test to identify the types of printed paper products*1 that have the best recyclability when they are deinked. The ‘good deinkability’ rating means the production systems produced high scores in the evaluation of five parameters – luminosity, colour, cleanliness, ink elimination and filtrate darkening. In 2008, Ingede first issued ‘confirmation letters’, identifying dry inks with ‘good deinkability’. The very first few tests were done in Xerox through Xerox Austria, where most devices were put through the deinkability test. Presently, the following devices have received the deinkability certification - Xerox & Fuji Xerox 490 / 980 Color Continuous Feed Printing System, Xerox & Fuji Xerox 1300 Continuous Feed, DC250
& DC240, DC5000 & DC5000AP, DC6060, DC7000 / DC8000 and iGen3. Xerox Corporation and Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. have scored high results in the latest deinking tests from the International Association of the Deinking Industry (INGEDE). The certifications were given to the toners used within the digital colour production systems; Xerox iGen4®, 700 Digital Color Press and Color 800 Press/Color 1000 Press. “Sustainability is part of our DNA,” says Koji Tezuka, senior general manager, Marketing, International Business Group, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “We have dedicated decades into research, innovation and resources in this area, encompassing every step of the value chain from the design stage, through manufacturing, to disposal to work towards a sustainable global environment. The INGEDE test results are another affirmation of our continuous efforts.” •

HEI Lights - New Technology & Differentiation in Packaging In June, Heidelberg welcomed almost 400 customers from across Southeast Asia to its annual HEI Lights Event in Kuala Lumpur at the Heidelberg Print Media Academy (PMA). on customer feedback to ensure Heidelberg was delivering on customers’ expectations. “We’ve listened to our customers who have told us they want to see more practical demonstrations and have the opportunity to speak with experts at length about their requirements. The feedback from the June event indicates that we have exceeded their expectations, which is very gratifying”.
The HEI Lights theme was New Technology & Differentiation in Packaging and was specifically focused on the packaging market, which is a significant growth market for Southeast Asia. The event enabled customers to experience the range of Heidelberg products developed for this sector, with something for everyone from niche markets through to high volume production applications. The two-day event featured a number of presentations as well as practical hands-on demonstrations. Mr. Thomas Frank, Senior Vice President – Sheetfed and Postpress Solution, Heidelberg Asia said the 2011 program reflected Heidelberg’s commitment to provide its customers with the most up-to-date information for the packaging market to support customers to maximizes growth and profit by diversification. “There are a multitude of opportunities in the packaging sector and it was our
intention with this HEI Lights event to show our customers a range of applications, in real-time, to enable them to assess the best options for their businesses.” Continuing Mr. Frank said the 2011 HEI Lights program was modeled
He said of particular interest was the Hexachrome color printing demonstration by Peter Halbert, Heidelberg’s Applications Specialist. Hexachrome is a six colour printing process with a wider color gamut than CMYK, delivering packaging printers with greater options and flexibility. The demonstration of Hexachrome color printing was conducted on a state-of-the-art CD102 six colour press with coater, which was recently
Print Pack Publish Asia • 6/2011
Sheetfed Offset 29 installed at the PMA. This press features the Heidelberg Prinect Press Center, which drives the workflow on the CD102 via touch screen operation. During the demonstration customers were also able to see the next generation of Heidelberg’s Prinect Image Control in action. Prinect Image Control is used to manage color quality and is in its newest version the most versatile spectrophotometric color measurement device in the market and can be connected to up to four presses. Its step and repeat functionality supports the printer to have color consistency on all 1-ups in production (individual boxes for instance). To show the difference between the CMYK four-color process and Hexachrome color printing in packaging, Heidelberg ran the same print job with both processes to enable direct comparison. Mr. Halbert said customers were most interested in the vibrancy of colors and the productivity savings of the Hexachrome process as “it removes the need for press wash ups for PMS colours because PMS colors can be simulated using Hexachrome color printing. This method can deliver significant savings in time, labor and material costs and decreases time to market”. Another presentation that drew interest was the demonstration of the latest UV coating technology and special effects. Until now UV printing in the packaging sector has been largely confined to cardboard boxes, lenticular applications and cards and labels. But this is starting to change with UV applications now being applied to products such as cosmetic packaging. Attendees were able to view a range of special effects possible with UV printing including the highest gloss achievable using inline coating. There are many benefits of UV printing including the instant curing of inks and coatings, which means the job can be sent to post-press immediately. With UV printing there is also no requirement for spray powder, which is an additional saving in materials and labor. And UV-printed paper products and cartons are able to be recycled, which provides an important environmental marketing proposition for print producers.
New Finishing Products on Show Attendees were also the first to view the latest releases from the KAMA range of die-cutters and specialty gluers; the new KAMA ProCut and KAMA ProFold. Multi-functional and adaptable across A1-A3 formats, KAMA machines are new to Southeast Asia and create additional opportunities for value adding in the packaging market. The KAMA ProCut die-cutter, which was demonstrated with hot foil stamping and embossing, comes in three models and is capable of handling a variety of substrates up to 800gsm including paper, cardboard, micro-flute corrugated board and plastics. This machine is highly flexible and versatile. The KAMA ProFold is a specialty gluer with an 8-channel programmable logic controller and a hot-melt gluing device. Ideal for a variety of products, including capacity folders, ticket pockets, envelopes including peel and seal, CD and DVD slipcases, greeting cards and advent calendars. This machine delivers flexibility and ease of use combined with very fast job change over. Both the KAMA ProCut and KAMA ProFold have small footprints meaning they can be located in small print shops or installed in “spare space” without the additional cost of making building extensions. In addition to the KAMA equipment, Heidelberg also demonstrated its Prinect packaging workflow for step and repeat and automated file production automation in prepress and used the Varimatrix diecutter and Easygluer 100 folding box gluer for the final finishing of a 6 up six corner box. Both machines were focused on quick job change without compromising the product quality. The Varimatrix 105CS II was equipped with quick lock chase and 4+1mm sandwich cutting plate with fine adjustment. Both features enable the operator to do fast tool change over. In the stripping section, the quick lock frame and quick lock for the stripping board support quick job change, too. The Easygluer 100 is a 3-carrier folding carton gluing machine which impresses with utmost flexibility and versatility in application. Four and Six corner boxes
as well as a lot of specialty boxes can be easily done. The motorized make-ready enables a reduction in job change over time by as much as 30% in width related settings. In conclusion Mr. Frank declared this HEI Lights event a great success. “We look forward to providing more informative sessions like this for our customers. If we can help them see the latest solutions and drive growth in their businesses then their success is our success”.

“Out of the box” thinking Tim Klappe, president director of PT manroland Indonesia, gives his insights on the latest trends and applications in packaging printing The future for packaging printing in Asia is brighter than ever, but printers can only succeed if they refuse to be boxed in. With conditions ripe for the industry to take off in the region, PT manroland Indonesia president director Tim Klappe urged printers to prepare for the oncoming economic boom by investing in the right equipment and thinking outside the box. Consumer-driven economies and the on-the-go lifestyle of today’s workforce are driving up consumption and making packaging printing even more indispensable, says Klappe, but a forward-looking approach is needed if printers want to profit from it. "When economies grow, people will buy more products, they will shop more," Klappe says. More supermarkets and other shops will emerge. "In these shops and supermarkets, you cannot just throw all the products you sell on a pile or hang on a hook. You need to put it on a shelf. You need to display it nicely so that people notice your product and will actually buy. This means: Boxes are needed. Boxes need to be printed and printed well." Satisfying this huge demand may look easy at first glance because of the great number of printers around. However, not every printer has the ability to meet the high quality standards set by most customers. A cut-throat price war among printers, the trend for shorter but more frequent print runs resulting from retailers having little room to keep stock of products, and additional packaging security measures to protect customers’ brands
“Production efficiency, quality and consistency as well as ability to differentiate one’s self and print products from those in the market are the key areas where printers need to focus on”. Says Tim Klappe, President Director of PT manroland Indonesia, from imitations add to the challenges that printers face, says Klappe. Complicating matters is the growing emphasis on environment awareness and protection – a "must-do" for established brands that would like to project themselves as socially responsible.
Klappe points to production efficiency, quality and consistency as well as ability to differentiate one’s self and print products from those in the market as key areas where printers need to focus on.
Having access to topnotch presses and applications, like those provided by manroland, certainly does help.
Production efficiency has plenty to do with a streamlined production management, short make-ready times, quality assurance and format, he says, and these can benefit from digital workflows.
manroland, the world’s leading provider of printing equipment and solutions, shares the same ideals as these brands and understand how best to help printers in coping with the changing demands.
"Printshops have to rationalise total order management procedures in order to boost the performance in the whole print value chain," Klappe says. "A highly efficient process management system is needed, focusing on the whole

Sheetfed Offset production process with integration of prepress, press and postpress as well as a link to business processes like cost calculation, quotations and even links to customers or print buyers." manroland’s printnet system, a family of hardware and software that communicates using electronic job tickets, based on the open system concept called JDF, is an efficient and valuable tool for the printer, according to Klappe. Among its modules are the PressManager perfect and Integration Pilot plus, which complement each other. The PressManager perfect reduces make-ready time through automatic press presetting. Integration Pilot Plus supplements complete job preparation with automatic and detailed production data collection that can be used for analysis. Because customers now prefer to place a series of small orders instead or large bulks, printers are faced with tighter deadlines, hence the need for shorter make-ready times. “Instead of 3 long-run jobs a day, you might have 15 short-run jobs per day. This would mean 5 times more jobs to prepare, 5 times more transport/ logistics to arrange, 5 times more set up times,’’ Klappe says. “You will notice that the total job preparation time and logistics time will become much more important. Therefore, you will have to be organised very well and be very efficient to deal with these short-run jobs.” To cope with the challenge of shorter make-ready times, Klappe recommends the ROLAND 700 with Direct Drive – “the world champion in set-up times”. A ROLAND 700 DirectDrive press reduces make-ready time by up to 60 percent compared to a conventional sheetfed offset press, he says. Combining different technologies, this press can perform three processes simultaneously: plate change, impression cylinder wash-up and plate cylinder wash-up. Print quality is essential, too. To ensure better print quality, two particular devices can be helpful: the InlineColorPilot and
But investing in new equipment and technology requires sound judgment. “It is good to consider where the cost of your company is actually sitting. Most of the cost in the printing company is related to paper, other materials and personnel. The total finance cost of the press is about 10% of the total cost of operation,’’ says Klappe. the InlineInspector. Using the Inline Color Pilot can result in fewer waste sheets, lower energy costs and no inkwater balance disturbance, while the Inline Inspector allows for rapid checks of for example hicky’s, missing text and codes. The size of the packaging is crucial, and for every size there’s a press that’s a perfect fit. For those in the 3B sheetsize range, Klappe recommends the ROLAND 700HiPrint. It has the distinct advantage of being able to accommodate print jobs of the 3B plus size. “This extra 8cm in sheetwidth can allow you the extra line of small boxes or enable you to get the extra job, allowing you to make the extra profit or extra margin,’’ he explains. For increased productivity and a wider range of sizes, the ROLAND 900XXL, with size 6 of 100 x 140 cm to size 8 at 130 x 185cm, is highly valued. The high-automated ROLAND 900 produces more quality prints in format 6 at 15,000 sheets per hour, but if printers don’t need a size larger than 3B, the ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS would be more suitable. It works just like the ROLAND 700 DirectDrive and is designed to start production rate at 18,000 sheets per hour. Creativity plays an important part in product packaging, and plenty of print customers are looking for flashier, more intricate and eye-catching print designs. A lot of those designs need to be done using newer and more sophisticated applications. Inline cold foil printing is one process that can make print products stand out, Klappe says. Another revolutionary enhancement technique he recommends is inline embossing using the ROLAND Inline Impress.
“Therefore, when investing in production equipment, it makes sense to look carefully to which extent your new equipment can help you to reduce your paper cost and personnel. It could be better to spend a bit more on a machine that enables you to reduce paper, personnel cost and maintenance cost than buying a lower-cost machine that does not eventually give you a big advantage in reducing your total production cost." Reducing paper waste and energy cost are both part of green printing, which is the way forward. Klappe notes that more and more established companies insist on working with printers who share their commitment to environment and energy conservation. If you as a printer do not care about the environment, you will simply not get a job from any well known brandowner. Cutting down on carbon emission is an important initial step in becoming ecofriendly, and manroland works with consulting company "ClimatePartner" to calculate the CO2 footprint using the Ecometer. "The manroland Ecometer lets you determine potential savings. It calculates the required energy and resources based on specific information such as machine type, production volume, and paper consumption and offers specific suggestions for sustainably improving printing processes," says Klappe. "In addition, it reveals the total savings that are possible over a year or over the total service life of a press. In addition to representing energy efficiency, reduced emissions, and resource savings, the Ecometer provides an ecological assessment for predefined press configurations and indicates savings for carbon dioxide, energy, and the cost of materials." •

100 Years of ContiTech Printing Blankets – a History of Success Set to Continue With trail-blazing processes and a research and development ever geared to the future, ContiTech has shaped the printing blanket branch for a century. With the two brands – CONTI-AIR and PHOENIX Xtra BLANKETS – the company has established itself as one of the world’s key manufacturers. The result: a unique, uniform printing surface.
Whether with the development of the first elastic printing blanket in 1911, the trail-blazing blowing manufacturing process for compressible printing blankets (registered for a patent in 1961), the debut of the CONTI-AIR brand in 1969 or the world's first ever climateneutral printing blankets in 2010 – printing blankets from ContiTech have continually and sustainably established themselves on the world market. As an internationally prominent manufacturer in this sector – and the sole German one – the company is now marking its 100th anniversary as a printing blanket producer. “The past 100 years have shown that ContiTech has always had a future-oriented and forward-looking mindset. It has thus built up its strong position,” says Heiko Eymer, head of the ContiTech Elastomer Coatings business unit. “In the last few years in particular, a lot has happened in the
printing industry. In 2005, for example, ContiTech acquired the PHOENIX Xtra BLANKETS brand. This made it one of the largest printing blanket manufacturers worldwide. The two brands have different focal points, so they complement one another excellently.” The milestones in printing blanket development Milestones in printing blanket development characterise the history of success: And so ContiTech – at the time under the Continental name – took part in the first drupa printing blanket trade show and went on to expand its range three years later. Registered for a patent in 1961, the special blowing process revolutionised the branch. It did this by producing closed micropores filled with overpressure in the compressible layer. The innovation made it possible to exactly define and control compressibility and resilience.
In 1979 printing blanket production moved from Hanover to Northeim and production was expanded. With the help of calenders, it has been possible to produce double-width printing blankets since 1996. Three years later ContiTech filed for a patent on metal printing blankets. It is the leader in this product area. In the period thereafter, the company enlarged the scope of its business in Asia and founded the ContiTech Printing Blanket service center in Shanghai in 2001. Since 2010 the service center in Singapore has, for its part, been supporting the involvement in Asia. In 2010, ContiTech again played a pioneering role. It manufactured the first climate-neutral printing blanket anywhere in the world. “With our strategy of manufacturing climate-neutral printing blankets, we contribute to greater eco-friendliness. It has enabled us to greatly reduce CO2 emissions,” says Dr. Thomas Perkovic, head of the printing blanket segment at ContiTech Elastomer Coatings. •

Since our customers are all keen to boost sales in China, we help them develop new, more attractive packaging on an ongoing basis. We work ceaselessly to enhance our
designs and quality. We see huge potential in packaging for tobacco and luxury goods like wine and spirits.”

Technology and service are key Technology played just as important a role as marketing strategies in the company’s success. Jiao Xiao Ping says: “The fact that we opted for KBA presses again after a considerable interval is no coincidence. We have experience of offset presses from other German and Japanese vendors. But in recent years KBA has drawn ahead of the field, gaining widespread recognition in China and really burnishing its image here. This applies not only to technological innovations but also to performance and, not least, after-sales service. We value the trust engendered in the course of our communications with KBA, and are open to any new advances that may help us drive growth. Our customers are highly discerning and demand ever more complex products that we must be fully capable of delivering.”

Big improvements in high-quality sector Mr Jiao continues: “Prior to making the final decision on which type of press to take we visited a reference installation at Dongguan QP Factory in Shenzhen, where we saw that KBA is well able to provide the technology needed for top-
quality packaging production. We were deeply impressed by the demonstrations given on the big KBA fleet there.” Deputy general manager, Jianping Bao, is also delighted at the continued association with KBA: “The press was delivered bang on schedule and com-
missioned to our complete satisfaction. It will help us to enhance our product range still further, particularly in the high-quality sector. We have therefore arranged for KBA to provide further training in a three-month cycle.” •

Heidelberg with its sheetfed offset printing machines is one of the leading solution providers for the print media industry with a global market share of over 40%. “We have great expectations regarding the number of visitors coming from both Thailand and surrounding countries. We are confident that our equipment and live demonstrations will draw significant attention from customers who are considering investing in new equipment,” said Ms Asavajaruphan. Heidelberg indicated that now is an ideal time for companies to invest in new equipment due to the current strength of the Thai Baht and increasing export opportunities combined with strong local consumer demand in Asia. Ms Asavajaruphan added that Asia will continue to grow rapidly over the years to come and with substantial investments in the latest technology will remain very competitive in the worldwide print market. “Likewise the growth in GDP and increasing local consumer demand will further stimulate the need for printed matter including packaging”, she said.
Global competence.
Heidelberg produces equipment for prepress, press and post press, and is the only company that does so in the world. Octogram Press signs up with Heidelberg again at Print China At Print China Singapore-based Octogram Press signed an agreement to install a Heidelberg CD 102-4. Tan Hon Kee, business development manager, shares with Christel Lee of PPPA what won them over. Set up in 1989, Octogram Press is a one-stop centre for many customers. our staff have benefited from the extensive training programs provided by the Print Media Academy as well as information sharing through their service and support team.”
Tan Hon Kee, business development manager of Octogram Press, said: “Heidelberg is the world's leading solution provider for the print media industry with focuses on the print solution and value chain in sheet-fed offset printing. Well-informed customers understand their machines are a benchmark for quality.”
Tan referred to occasions where there were minor faults in a press. “Heidelberg’s service engineers came back to the pressroom within three hours and resolved the problems,” he explained. However, it was another occasion that convinced Tan of Heidelberg’s service commitment.
He highlights, “Heidelberg has offered strong production and maintenance support to us over the last 15 years. A wide range of spare parts and consumables are readily available. Many of
“There was one time when even the local Heidelberg engineers could not resolve the technical fault. I watched the engineers set up a remote video conference with the engineers in Germany, witnessing every step of their trouble-
shooting of the press! The engineers in Germany were virtually guiding those in Singapore and I was impressed.” Tan adds, “You can be shown how good a press is anytime. However, what many press manufacturers overlook is the service standard provided – we don’t have the luxury of time when a press breaks down. Businesses like ours cannot afford to stop the press. In the end, having to stop the press reflects the service standards of the manufacturers.” The Heidelberg CD 102-4 will be installed in the later part of 2011.• Tan Hon Kee (left), business development manager of Octogram Press with his team.

Raises the bar with tough new environmental targets Tetra Pak to cap carbon emissions, further responsible sourcing, increase recycling and pursue sustainable packaging Before making the final decision to relocate Ipex to ExCeL London, we undertook detailed consultation with both exhibitor and visitor groups. Feedback from exhibitors and stakeholders towards this move has been extremely positive, in particular with regards to the excellent venue and its fantastic infrastructure. The exhibition’s facilities are second to none. Ipex will occupy the entire ExCeL London showground with 46 continuous exhibition halls offering nearly 100,000m² of column free space, with 24 entrances opening up into the central boulevard making it the ideal layout for Ipex exhibitors and visitors. The extensive conference and meeting rooms will enable exhibitors to truly maximize their investment at Ipex and make it their global business hub for the duration of the show. In addition, the IT facilities at ExCeL London are some of the best in the
world. With a £13 million investment in IT infrastructure , it offers the most resilient, advanced venue network in Europe with unrivalled bandwidth >90Mb. London is one of the most culturally diverse cities of the world which is served by five major airports, with London City Airport only a mile away from ExCeL. And with the 2012 Olympic legacy with its significant investment in transport and infrastructure in the surrounding area, London ExCeL offers tremendous potential to further expand the appeal to international companies. Ipex already has a large proportion of its exhibitor base from outside the UK, and importantly, I would estimate of all exhibitors, some 90% fund Ipex from their global headquarters, further confirming its global significance. In addition, London is regarded as one of Europe’s key ‘media’ hubs so there is great opportunity to strengthen our
position within the creative community. The cost of exhibiting should be no more than it would have been in terms of standard inflationary increases if we had stayed at the NEC, and that’s our pledge to exhibitors. For Ipex 2010 we worked extremely hard with the NEC, contractors and exhibitors to offer some ‘Recession Buster’ initiatives that presented real cost savings. Rest assured we will work just as hard for 2014 to negotiate comparable costs for the show at ExCeL. From a visitor perspective, at Ipex 2010 we recorded our highest ever percentage of international visitors reaching 48%. London offers tremendous potential to further expand this international appeal and we expect the percentage of overseas visitors to well exceed 50% in 2014. We will be taking over full tenancy of ExCeL in late March/early April 2014 including all conference facilities, meeting rooms and promotional sites. No other events will take place during this time, which gives us the opportunity to create an all inclusive ‘Ipex’ experience for exhibitors and visitors. Prices for accommodation in London compare very favourably with those in Birmingham. Many visitors probably stayed out of town because of the cost of hotels in Birmingham were so high! There is an entirely different and larger scale in London offering over 120,000 bedrooms, compared to just 27,000 in greater Birmingham. We also have a new accommodation strategy in place to pre-reserve hundreds of rooms at cost, helping to reduce inflated pricing associated with large events. London clearly has many top class hotels, but with so much choice of

Management/General 45 accommodation on offer, and our own official accommodation agency working with all establishments, we are confident that staying overnight in London need not be any more expensive than in Birmingham. In addition, the tremendous variety of hotels and restaurants throughout London offers a much greater flexibility for visitors to find what is appropriate for their budgets. ExCeL also lends itself to expanding the ‘Ipex Experience’ beyond show opening hours. It is in the centre of an area with lots of choice for after hours activities. Everything the visitor needs is all self contained within the venue with 40 restaurants/bars/eateries, the best conference facilities in Europe, easy accessibility from throughout the UK. Apart from what promises to be a gamechanging event in 2014, there is also the added advantage of the centre of London a few stops away to enjoy the renowned London theatres, nightlife, shopping and tourist attractions. So many more reasons to extend your Ipex stay in 2014! •
The Asian perspective of Ipex 2014 Trevor Crawford predicts an increase in the number of exhibitors and visitors from Asia at Ipex 2014. At Ipex 2010, there were several areas of Asia that increased in exhibitor and visitor numbers over those that attended back in 2006. For example, China saw a 51% increase. Ipex has always been a major attraction for Asian visitors, with a strong bond between the region and I would expect this to grow off the back of a hugely successful event in 2010. We had our ‘International Days’ programme at Ipex 2010 and will be reviewing the comprehensive features programme that we offered then to add further enhancements to develop each area for 2014. This programme included a morning briefing, communicating with all exhibitors to have relevant members of the team on the stand for each International Day, providing visitors from each region with relevant information on feature programmes, seminars, travel, accom-

modation etc. We will be looking carefully into the services that our Asian visitors want during the coming months, including translation services. In addition, as at Ipex 2010, we will be offering the regional pavilions which will include a mixture of relevant exhibitors to that region, and will provide a higher profile for groups of Asian exhibitors. In 2014, with the benefit of the London factor, we expect this to translate into even greater interest in attending Ipex. It’s also important to note that Ipex has developed its own biennial event – Ipex South

ROLAND brand celebrates its birthday A name that has become a quality seal for presses turns 100 In the economic history of Offenbach, it occupies a prominent position. 2011 marks the hundredth year since the first ROLAND model press left the factory. Along the complex path from lithography to high-tech offset, modern printing tech-nology has widely removed itself from the early work of Senefelder. It has also come a long way since the first ROLAND in 1911. Nonetheless, its name lives on, on literally every continent, in the printing companies that use presses from Offenbach for their work. One hundred years have passed since the first ROLAND model left the manufacturer. Its name would later be adopted by the entire company. The Offenbach factory in question had already been in existence for around 40 years. The Franco-Prussian War forced the engineers Louis Faber and Adolf Schleicher to leave Paris in 1870. In the following year, they established their Association for Production of Automatic Lithographic Presses. Though they established the company in Frankfurt, Faber and Schleicher broke ground in Offenbach, where they were soon doing business on an international scale. Their first export model was the Albatros, which was sent in 1875 to the Russian capital of St. Petersburg. In 1911, as
the first ROLAND en-tered the market and immediately won a gold medal at the Turin World’s Fair, the founders officially established their company as Faber & Schleicher AG. The name: from the product to the company In 1957, the successful model made its way into the company name, which was now Roland Offsetmaschinenfabrik Faber & Schleicher AG. Faber had died in 1896; Schleicher in 1910. In 1979, it was decided that their names, too, should be put to rest in the company archives. Another name change followed the amalgama-tion of the Offenbach company with the printing press unit of the Maschinenfabrik AugsburgNuremberg (MAN) in Augsburg, a major long-term shareholder. The company thus became MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AG. And it stayed that way until 2008. That was the year that brought us manroland. Today, the romantic names of the ROLAND’s predecessor models Albatros, Faust, Gretel, Odin or Delfin are reserved for specialist literature. Those models were still lithographic presses
and still quite similar to the technology developed by the in-ventor Alois Senefelder at the turn of the 19th century in Offenbach for the André music publishing company. Faber and Schleicher were not alone in their constant expansion and advancement of this area with new technologies and designs; they and their successors were, however, always at the cutting edge of development. Their presses ultimately conquered the world market. The names of many success-ful new products that were developed along the way still pay tribute to the RO-LAND model. A homage: the Senefelder Foundation
On its hundredth birthday in 1971, the company’s celebrations focused less on it-self and more on its origins with a tribute to the 200th birthday of lithography inven-tor Alois Senefelder. manroland marked the occasion by founding the International Senefelder Foundation. The foundation regularly presents the International Sene-felder Award in order to honor extraordinary achievements in the field of artistic lithography and its further development in flat-bed printing. •

High-tech KBA Rapida 142 for Tien Wah Press
Just a few weeks after the impressive production start-up of a VLF Rapida 185 at Linocraft Printers in Malaysia, KBA Asia-Pacific booked an order from Singapore-based Tien Wah Press (TWP) for a high-automation Rapida 142 five-colour coater press which will be commissioned soon at TWP’s production plant in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Tien Wah Press is part of Japan’s Dai Nippon Printing Group and is a new customer for KBA. The plant in Johor Bahru, which is around 20 years old and employs more than 1,000 people, specialises in printing children’s books and trade books, which account for 90% of its output. The remaining 10% is generated with packaging and other print products for the local market. TWP – a globally active book printer for the past 75 years TWP in Singapore has been printing finely crafted books for prominent publishers worldwide for the past 75 years, and exports 95% of its output. As well as Singapore and Malaysia it has sales outlets in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris and Sydney.
TWP managing director, Yoichi Sanada, sees a great future for KBA in his company’s production plants. He says: “The Rapidas are genuinely hightech presses with an advanced level of automation and impressive performance data. KBA has a lot of experience in this sector and a whole string of reference plants worldwide. During the projectplanning phase, which began over a year ago, we sent a team to Germany to study the market and the latest technological advances. KBA’s factory in Radebeul and Rapida installations elsewhere were among the plants we visited and assessed. After that there was no doubt that KBA was the right choice.” TWP’s pre-press/press and engineering managers in Malaysia, Ong See Kok and Wesley Ho, were also engaged
in the project, and are confident that they made the right choice. Mr Ho says: “We had previously had no experience of KBA presses, but what the team saw in Germany and we saw at Linocraft Printers nearer to home was both compelling and confidenceinspiring. We expect the after-sales service provided by KBA Asia-Pacific in Malaysia to be as outstanding as KBA’s technology, so the chances of developing a close association in the future are looking good.” Array of quality- and performanceboosting features In addition to full commissioning and training, the press contract with KBA includes a complete service package extending for several years, which will help TWP’s press operators to handle the Rapida with professional skill. The five-colour KBA Rapida 142 for TWP will be mounted on a 420mm (16.5in) plinth and configured with one coater, automatic plate changers, VariDry IR/hot-air dryers and a double delivery extension. Other features will include a board-handling package, automated pile logistics, ErgoTronic ACR autoregistration, KBA LogoTronic data management, DensiTronic Professional and QualiTronic Professional inline quality monitoring and control. •

Rilecart packs a punch at PrintEx11 Rilecart binding and auto punch machines have long been recognised for their high productivity wire binding and punching. This was certainly reinforced at the Rilecart stand at last year’s Ipex where an impressive range of compact automatic and semi-automatic machinery was on display.
Ol iver Chew, sales manager for Rilecart Pte Ltd, who attended the Australian PrintEx11 exhibition in May, believes the market for really big machines has gone. “Now everyone is looking for smaller equipment that is easy to change over to accommodate many different sizes. Speedwise the smaller machines are not as fast as the big models, but volumes have shrunk while there is more job variety. “There is a need for low cost, entry level trade machines that are simple to set up and use. For those who have been using manual machines, the gap in terms of pricing is too great to upgrade to fully automatic models. The Rilecart range of manual and electrically operated desktop and semiautomatic machines for wire binding and plastic coil applications is reasonably priced. The machines are aimed at the growth areas of the digital print market as well as for small offset printers, and inplant print shops in schools and universities.”
¼" to 1¼". With a binding length of 340mm, binding speeds up to 600 books per hour and an affordable price it was no wonder that the WB 360 generated lots of interest.
Showcased at PrintEx11 was the recent ly released a nd upg raded entry level double loop wire binding machine, the Wirebinder 360, which has enjoyed great success since the first model was released at Pacprint 2009. This machine is extremely versatile having capacity to bind books and calendars using wire over a range of diameters from 3/16" to 1" off spools and cut lengths in diameters from
Originally targeted at customers looking for a cost-effective move from hand and desktop binding into semiautomatic binding, the WB360 has quickly attracted interest in other areas, in particular from customers with larger, less flexible machines who are looking for fast and simple set up for small jobs and for digital print applications where fast service is a key criteria. Signaling a further move into the
digital print market, Rilecart also introduced the new HSP360 compact automatic punch at PrintEx11. This machine fully complements the existing broad range of Rilecart punching machines for wire, plastic coil, comb and universal binding. Chew believes it will attract the same acceptance as the Wirebinder 360 by Asian customers. “It’s a machine which really sells itself,” he points out. “Customers are impressed with the simplicity of operation and the low price tag makes the investment very easy to justify.” •

Web Offset Technology
Lots more success for Goss Several print companies from commercial offset top web have invested heavily over the last few months installing new Goss equipment. Below is a summary of their recent success Paramount Printing of Hong Kong, a subsidiary of the Next Media Group, held a ceremony on May 24 to celebrate the start up of a new Goss M-600 16page web offset press, which augments production from its current fleet of commercial web and sheetfed presses. Complementing four existing web offset presses, the four-unit M-600 press with a Goss Contiweb zero-speed splicer, Ecocool dryer and JF55 combination folder includes high-performance options aimed at maximising quality and production efficiency. A JF55 folder with double parallel and delta fold was chosen for fast and accurate production of tabloid and smaller magazine formats, while Goss Autoplate plate enables fast, fully automated plate changing by a single Paramount operator. In addition, Goss Omnicon press controls manage all aspects of press automation, including presetting and up-to-the-minute status on the entire press line performance, from reelstand to folder. The Goss Ecocool dryer for Paramount has been equipped with an anti-sweat system and advanced water package closed loop system designed especially for climates with high humidity. This option prevents water in
the air from condensing on the cold chill rolls during standby, which can affect precise temperature control and lead to potential web breaks. Paramount also chose to include the patented Goss web catcher capability to ensure that both the impact of a web break on the printing unit and the resulting press downtime are minimal. Positioned after the last unit and before the dryer, the web catcher allows instantaneous detection of a web break, regardless of paper thickness, ink coverage or blanket washing. The subsequent handling of the paper reel protects against potential blanket or mechanical damage, maintains good tension of the web between units and eliminates the need for a re-web. Established 30 years ago, multi awardwinning Paramount services clients worldwide and has a dedicated North American sales office in Toronto, Canada. According to production director Yum Tak Hung, the company's focus on high quality has been recognized through print awards in the USA, Britain, Germany and Poland as well as Hong Kong and China, and was the key factor in its selection of the M-600 press. "We describe ourselves as ‘Paramount' in both name and philosophy," states Mr. Yum. "Through everything from graphic design and repro services, to print and finishing, our aim is to deliver a supreme service that will ensure we become the principle print supplier to our clients. We bring the creative flair, the technical expertise, experience and professionalism to help them fulfill their print needs and we look to our partners and equipment suppliers to help ensure that those standards are
maintained for a cost-effective and high-quality product delivered on deadline." "The high-quality commercial print market is becoming highly contested among Chinese suppliers," comments Goss International vice president Tim Mercy. "This press system gives Paramount one of the most versatile and high-tech print facilities in Hong Kong, raising their game once again both in terms of print performance and the value for money they can offer."
UBP invests again in Goss press to safeguard market leadership in Malaysia
UBP Printing of East Malaysia, a subsidiary of United Borneo Press Group Sdn Bhd, has ordered a further Goss Community SSC press line to address forthcoming trends and to meet anticipated market forces. The order for six four-high towers and a Goss N40 folder comes just one year after installing a five-tower Community SSC press. The new press is scheduled for delivery into UBP's facility in Miri City, Serawak, later this year and will print the company's leading title, United Daily News, among others.
Print Pack Publish Asia • 6/2011
Web Offset Technology According to Sim Yong Liang, managing director at UBP Printing, the investment is a proactive step to meet market conditions in Malaysia. "Newspaper publishing has been very challenging in this part of the world. United Daily News (UDN) is making a broad move to invest in Goss Community SSC shaftless technology and ink presetting systems ahead of the rest of the market, as we foresee the growing requirement for more colour pages in newspapers." Specified with features that will maximize efficiency and reduce waste, the press will be the company's first installation featuring independent drives for each tower. The "footprint shaftless" configuration allows greater production flexibility and faster set-up. This will be complemented by a number of advanced operational capabilities such as automated press controls, ink-key presetting, zero-speed web splicers, and automatic web break detection.
Chinese publisher will add new Goss press with heatset and coldset capabilities
Yangzhou Newspaper Media Group investing to meet demand for commercial-quality newspapers Pioneering Chinese newspaper publisher and long-time Goss press user Yangzhou Newspaper Media Group will install a new Goss Magnum press with a combination of heatset and coldset printing capabilities in late 2011. The Magnum 4 press in the "MV400" hybrid configuration will include two four-high coldset towers and a fourhigh tower equipped with a heatset dryer. The system will produce up to 40,000 newspapers per hour and feature three-form ink rollers for high print quality, advanced tension control and folding capabilities, and an integrated digital workflow.
The new press will enable UDN to print up to 24 pages broadsheet in full color, while maintaining better print quality at higher running speeds, says Yong Liang. "Less wastage on the rolls is one of our key objectives," he explains. "The cost of newsprint is continuing to increase and, especially with the current oil prices, we need to minimize set-up waste."
"Our readers are demanding commercial quality newspapers, so we need to build a new production platform to meet the requirements," explains deputy general manager Shi Kangning. "Choosing the Magnum press family that we trust, with semi-commercial heatset printing capability gives us the confidence and ability to bring new visual enjoyment to our readers. It will also give print advertisers more leverage in the competitive marketplace."
"The Malaysian market is very challenging and requires the publisher to offer precisely the right products for readers," concludes Yong Liang. "This investment choice is the result of extensive experience and exhaustive testing of the capabilities and the reliability of the Community technology, and with it UDN is on its track to keep growing its readership."
Yangzhou Newspaper Media Group began printing its flagship Yangzhou Daily in full colour on a Goss Community press nearly 20 years ago. The two companies have cooperated closely, as the publisher has grown from a small local paper to one of the strongest media groups in central China. In 2009 and 2010, the group installed a Goss
Magnum 4 press and a Goss Community SSC press.
Sri Lankan publisher boosts color capacity with Goss Community SSC press
Upali Newspapers of Sri Lanka has ordered a new Community SSC press from Goss International to address advertiser demand for more color pages. Past experience with Goss technology was instrumental in the decision to invest once again through Goss International. The new four-tower coldset press will be installed into the company's print facility in Homagama, alongside two existing web presses, one of which is also a Goss Community SSC model. According to Lakshman Perera, director of finance at Upali Newspapers, the demand from advertisers for more color placement opportunities has been steadily rising over recent years, making this an essential investment. "We intend to become the leading publisher of newspapers and periodicals in Sri Lanka and to achieve this aim we have developed a comprehensive plan of strategic and technological investment," Perera explains. "The new press from Goss International is a crucial element of our plan. With the leap in production capacity, particularly highquality color production, we are confident of growing our slice of the print advertising market in this country."

Wide Format / Proofing Technology
PPS Imaging installs two HP Scitex XP5100 Printers to expand capacity HP has announced that PPS Imaging, GmbH, of Hamburg, Germany, has installed two HP Scitex XP5100 Printers to expand its capacity and meet increasing customer demand for super-wide format indoor and outdoor signage applications. The five-metre UV printers have been installed at PPS Imaging’s main production facility in Berlin. The HP Scitex XP5100 Printers offer the ability to print substrates five metres in width,

“These printers give us the capacity to serve our customers and deliver their products very quickly,” said Michael Krieger, owner and managing director, PPS Imaging, GmbH. “Today, customers want things almost immediately and we can’t afford to wait to invest in equipment that meets those demands.” Responding to requests for print with less impact on the environment was another challenge that PSS Imaging has addressed. “We took an early decision to move towards more environmentally friendly printing,” Krieger said. “We replaced solvent machines with UV printers and added two latex printers to respond to customer requests for ‘greener’ print, and to be able to offer more applications for indoor use. We also use energy from eco-friendly sources.” PPS Imaging’s customers are primarily

PPS Imaging now employs 109 people, the largest number at its primary production facility in Berlin. In addition to its four original sites, the company now has two further sales offices, in Stuttgart and Munich. •
“We’ve had a very good relationship with HP,” Krieger said. “It supplies a wide range of printers with strong manufacturing standards, and we’ve received much good advice and support, as well as supplying inks and substrates. HP has been with us and helped us to grow.” Reinventing a business Since its establishment in 1972 as a professional photographic laboratory by renowned photographer Prof. F. C. Gundlach, PPS Imaging’s business has undergone a complete transformation. By 2000, professional photography was moving rapidly to digital causing rapid contraction in the market. PPS had a network of four laboratories in Hamburg, Berlin, Erkrath [Düsseldorf] and Dresden. Since then, PPS Imaging established a new course for itself, changing the business from traditional photo printing to large and wide format digital print production has been a ten year process. In the first four years, PPS Imaging conducted a major sales effort and established production facilities in its existing locations. By 2006, the company had a number of major contracts in place and a growing array of HP digital printers. These include

Reduce Carbon Footprint of Printing and Selling Books Using HP digital printing technologies has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of printing and selling books by up to 20 percent according to a new life cycle assessment study commissioned by HP.
HP is presenting results from the study today during an open house event at Webcom Inc., a leading publishing industry supplier. Webcom is the first in Canada to print books using an HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press. The Toronto-based company also uses an HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press to produce covers for the books. Conducted by research firm Quantis and independently reviewed in accordance with ISO standards applying to life cycle assessments, the study looks at offset-only printing, digital-only printing, and scenarios that would involve a mix of both. Quantis measured the potential carbon footprint of a 240-page, 5.5x8.5in (c.140 x 216mm) monochrome paperback book in two different demand profiles – a “bestseller” selling 500,000 copies over two years, and a “classic book” selling 5,000 copies over five years. The study quantifies opportunities where digital printing can help reduce the environmental impact of publishing, including: - reducing the number of bestseller copies printed by up to 22%, without affecting the total number of printed books sold;(1) and - reducing the potential carbon footprint of printing in a “classic book” scenario by as much as 20%. - right-sizing supply when a quarter or more of printed books go unread
The digital presses used in the life cycle assessment – HP T200 and T300 Inkjet Web Presses and an HP R85 Inkjet Press retail printing technology currently in development at HP – can help reduce the significant over-production common in book publishing, an industry where, according to some figures, approximately 30% of printed books are never sold or read. Much of the publishing’s total carbon footprint comes from the resources used to create and transport paper, so reducing overproduction is one of the most expedient avenues to improving publishing’s environmental profile.
“Digital printing’s ability to efficiently and affordably produce books in smaller quantities reduces the masses of unused copy returns that have long held industry sustainability, and profitability, hostage,” said Christopher Morgan, senior vice president, Graphics Solutions Business, HP. “Today, many of the world’s leading publishers select printing companies that use HP Inkjet Web Presses to better match supply to demand, reducing the industry’s total carbon footprint by eliminating thousands of tons of paper that would otherwise be used to print unread books.”
Print Pack Publish Asia • 6/2011
Wide Format / Proofing Technology
Print 22% fewer books without impacting the number of copies sold When printing to meet “bestseller” demand needs, the life cycle assessment showed that combining analogue offset and digital inkjet printing could significantly diminish the number of returned copies, allowing publishers to reduce print quantities by 22% without affecting the total number of printed books sold. For the classic book profile, HP inkjet digital presses had the potential to reduce the title’s carbon footprint by up to 20% when compared to offsetonly production. The highest reduction in the classic book profile came from producing books on an HP T300 Inkjet Web Press in combination with the HP R85 retail/in-store book inkjet press solution. Along with reducing the overproduction, and subsequent returns, tied to analogue offset’s minimum run-length requirements and longer turnaround times, digital print-on-demand book manufacturing offers additional, important business advantages to publishers, reducing makeready printing waste as well as storage, warehousing and distribution costs. HP digital presses: leading the change in publishing HP digital presses help publishers reduce costs while increasing the number and type of profitable titles they offer in print. Several of the world’s top publishing suppliers, including North American firms Webcom, Courier Corp., and King Printing; leading European book manufacturer
CPI; and the Hong Kong-based book exporter CTPS, are improving the title management supply chain by printing books on HP T300 Inkjet Web Presses. The new study is part of an ongoing initiative within the HP Graphics Solutions Business to evaluate, quantify and expand digital printing’s positive effects on print sustainability. In the
publishing industry specifically, HP also has joined both the Green Press Initiative and the Book Industry Environmental Council. •

now adds extra control to the print-tocut register process to ensure maximum throughput."
The PIXI Awards are a great accolade that not only presents an opportunity for those who have an eye for digital print but also spurs on the evolution of digital technology.
The Ribbon Control System with MultiCam is a computerized, closed-loop, print-to-cut and print-to-fold registration system that uses cutoff and sidelay compensators to control registration in circumferential and lateral directions respectively. The system resides on the company's ICONTM platform, which acts as a common user interface for QuadTech's press controls.
Submissions for entries are now open until 31st August and entry is free. Entry forms can be downloaded from http://www.fujixeroxap.com/product/ pixi2011.jsp
QuadTech enhances Ribbon Control System with servodriven speed matching capabilities
ress controls manufacturer QuadTech has enhanced its Ribbon Control System with MultiCam®, for print-to-cut applications by adding servo drives and motors that will allow improved cutoff on folding carton presses.
The compact, low-profile MultiCam camera, monitoring the metering roll, provides outstanding register quality by identifying register marks as small as 0.36mm (0.014in) and searching for marks at a rate of 30 times per second. The camera also comes with a long-life LED light source and a low-maintenance OptiGuardTM system to reduce cleaning cycles.
HP Offers Large Format Photo The additional servo drive controls the Negative Solution for Black and “This competition gives us an metering roll-located before the die cut- White Photo Prints opportunity to see the work our customers produce day after day. I continue to be amazed every year not only by the exceptional quality of the work but also the innovative ways our customers’ use our solutions,” said Mike Braggins, Regional Manager, Marketing Communications who is responsible for the PIXI Awards at Fuji Xerox. “In all my time with Fuji Xerox, PIXI is one of many activities that I am so thrilled to be involved in.”
Entrants for this year’s awards (excluding Australia and New Zealand) will be automatically entered for the Asian Print Awards. Year on year we continue to see the quality of digital print getting better and better. As Frank Romano, Emeritus Professor from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), also commonly regarded as the grandfather of the printing industry said, “Perhaps in the future we have to start thinking of digital quality as being the standard and offset now talking about how it matches.”
ter-and counteracts speed discrepancies between the press and cutter. While the camera is in manual mode, the servo drive monitors the press speed and the position of the dancer, in order to determine the correct speed to turn the metering roll. If the dancer position changes, it aligns its speed to that of the press. If the camera is in automatic mode, the servo will also monitor the moves issued by the camera. If it issues a move, the target position of the dancer will change and the drive will briefly speed up or slow down the metering roll to hold this new position. "Synchronizing die-cutting speeds to exactly match cutoff is one of the keys to optimizing productivity in inline configurations on web offset and carton board converting lines," says Jim Toomey, product manager at QuadTech. News Packaging SME Jackway Convertor Industries invests $12 million in clean room facility Packaging SME Jackway Convertor Industries Pte Ltd officially opened its clean room packaging facility today. The $12 million investment has enabled Jackway to achieve ISO Class 8 Clean Room Certification[1]. With this certification, Jackway can now cater to more stringent needs of the food manufacturing industry and at the same time diversify into new areas such as pharmaceutical and nutritional food products.
substrate. Once printed, these large format photo negatives can be used as masters to produce high-quality black and white fine art prints through a contact process. The final print size is the same as that of the transparency, allowing an original 35 mm negative to be blown up as large as a 44-inch print. "Last year, HP introduced a solution for creating high-value platinum prints, combining the best of conventional and digital techniques for the benefit of photographers and their fine art clients," said Santiago Morera, vice president and general manager, Designjet Large format Printing Solutions, HP. "Once again, HP is meeting photographers' needs with an innovative solution for
more popular and affordable silver halide prints, demonstrating our commitment to helping photographers produce, showcase and archive their work." While writing on film from digital data is not new, the Large Format Photo Negative solution offers one of the simplest, least expensive and highestquality options available on the market. Users only need to have access to an HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer, the correct media and the free software package from the HP website to produce photo negatives. The Large Format Photo Negative solution can be used with any silver halide papers, including fixed or variable grade, and can be used to produce large format prints from 35mm images, enhance images from old or damaged negatives or archive digital files physically on film and paper. Picto, a professional photo lab based in Paris, has been using the solution to produce large format photo negatives and meet their photographer clients' needs for a simple way to create silver halide, large format prints or hardcopy image archives from negatives. "The Large Format Photo Negative solution from HP meets a long-standing demand we have heard from our clients," said Philippe Gassmann, chief executive officer, Picto. "We tried several options, but this is by far the most flexible and easy to use, allowing us to offer topquality, affordable silver halide prints from original negatives."
Supported by SPRING Singapore under the Technology Innovation Programme, the clean room provides a sterile environment that protects products from the potential ravages of contamination, dust particles and other impurities. This allows Jackway to manufacture highgrade packaging that requires specialized instruments to maintain precise levels of air quality, temperature and humidity. Such processes are needed by clients with high hygiene requirements. At the opening ceremony, SPRING Singapore’s Chief Executive Mr Png Cheong Boon believed that Jackway was an excellent example of an SME that was determined and committed to continuously upgrade its capabilities, develop new products and expand beyond the domestic market to become a globally competitive enterprise. He said, “Its investment in innovation and R&D has resulted in the development of a new window zipper pouch for the food industry as well as the use of more environmentally-friendly packaging materials. Its investment in new production technologies has also helped it to meet the more stringent requirements in the pharmaceutical and nutritional industries, as well as in the US and European markets.” Mr Png also added that SPRING Singapore, together with partner agencies, private sector organizations and trade associations and chambers, was committed to support SMEs in their upgrading and growth. He said, “We hope that more SMEs can tap these programmes to upgrade and innovate their businesses, seize the exciting and abundant opportunities in the global markets, and grow to become strong Singapore brands and leaders in their

respective industries in the global marketplace.” Mr Robin Yap, Managing Director of Jackway Convertor Industries said, “The company uses the most advanced technology that allows us to operate at the highest levels of productivity required by the demands of multifaceted packaging activities. We are especially proud that our company has clean room manufacturing facilities. This gives us the proficient capacity to expand our product range to handle the manufacturing of flexible packaging for clients with high hygiene requirements.” Jackway has continuously reinvented itself and upgraded its capabilities to seek new growth opportunities. It is a key supplier to some 70% of the local food manufacturers and exports to Russia, Australia, Japan, Pakistan as well as regional markets like Malaysia and Thailand. Jackway intends to move into environmental packaging. It has acquired a laminating machine which adopts environmentally-friendly processes. The machine replaces traditional ink used in printing with water-based solvent and chemical bonding glue with water glue. This will open doors for Jackway to tap markets with higher environmental needs such as the United States and Europe.
Print China success exceeds Komori's expectations
At the Print China Show in Guangdong last month, Komori featured 60 demonstrations on its offset presses and received orders far surpassing its initial expectations.
In its 800 square metre booth, Komori ran three machines: a six-colour and a four-colour Lithrone G40 making their first appearance in the Chinese market, and an Enthrone 29. Komori held four live demonstrations of each machine each day, a total of 60 demonstrations, based on the corporate slogan “Kando: Beyond Expectations” with a main theme of “Innovation for a Better Future” and a subtheme of “Five Solutions: Technological Innovation, Productivity, Print Quality, Environmental Friendliness and Service.” It adds that the demonstrations attracted many visitors and resulted in great success. The company says its six-colour Lithrone
According to Komori the four-colour Lithrone demonstrations offered visitors a view of stability of sheet feeding and delivery using both thin paper and thick paper; fast changeover from thin paper to thick paper; ultra-fast drying by H-UV and high-sensitivity ink; proposals for improvement of plant environment by means of powder-free and ozone-free production. Komori says the Enthrone 29 demonstration enabled it to show fast changeover from thin paper to thick paper (because transfer cylinder gripper pad up-down adjustment is not necessary); high print quality and improved suitability when printing on thick sheets due to double-size impression cylinders; efficient competence with short runs; and space saving and power saving. The company filled its five-cornered space with graphic images of the five

Kodak Announces Price Increase for Flexo Plate Family
Over the past year, the cost of manufacturing flexographic printing plates has risen dramatically due to rising
energy and raw material costs. In an effort to protect customers from these increases, Kodak has implemented a number of manufacturing efficiencies and, up to this point, has absorbed these additional costs. However, with costs continuing to climb, Kodak announced today that it will implement a global price increase of up to 7% on all flexographic plates as of July 15, 2011 in all regions of the world. The exact amount of the increase seen by each customer and implemented in each region will be based on local market conditions. “It’s never easy to pass these kinds of price increases along to our customers, and we are committed to working with them to ensure that their plate needs and business requirements are met as effectively as possible,” said Mohan Garde, Vice President and General Manager, Packaging Business, Prepress Solutions, Kodak. “The value that our plates bring to the markethigh quality, efficiency, repeatability, and more-continues to make them a sound investment for flexo printers who desire the best possible results. As always, we’ll continue to pursue manufacturing efficiencies that will minimize any future pricing impacts for our customer base.” Details of the new pricing structure will be communicated over the next month to all customers and dealers. All current contractual commitments will be honored.
