Pack Print International 2011 delivers record sales and visitors

The 3rd edition of Pack Print International closed on 3 September 2011 in Bangkok, Thailand, as the most successful regional exhibition for the packaging and printing sectors. The sentiment was unanimous for some 200 exhibitors from 20 countries at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC). Initial statistics indicate the exhibition attracted 17,000 attendees from more than 50 countries and a fourfold increase in international visitors compared to 2009. The exhibition was noteworthy for the high quality visitors and number of new local visitors across the packaging and printing sectors. Exhibitors commented that the strength of the exhibition was its ability to attract the right audience, that is, trade buyers with real influence in the buying decision. The exhibition ended on an extremely positive note with overwhelming results that saw an increase of about 40% in visitor attendance compared to the 2009 edition. Exhibitors were in good spirits and reported having a steady stream of meetings with high-quality visitors throughout the four days, as well as receiving specific orders. Many exhibitors expect active post-exhibition business and will also continue to use the online business matching service,

which is valid for up to one year after the exhibition. Joint organisers of PPI, Messe Düsseldorf Asia, The Thai Packaging Association and The Thai Printing Association are extremely satisfied with the highly effective forum for Thailand’s packaging and printing

“We exceeded our sales targets at Pack Print International, and based on this year’s show, we are very confident we will be back in 2013,” said Keith Patten, General Manager, Heidelberg Graphics (Thailand). Other exhibitors had similar sentiments; Qi Xian Yun, managing director of Sanxin Printing Machine Material said: “Pack Print International is an ideal platform for brand building, to increase awareness and gain market presence in Thailand. It is a growing market with much potential, and Sanxin is planning to come back in 2013 with a much bigger booth.” According to sales manager Naruj Rattanaurachai from Bobst Group (Thailand), they exceeded sales targets set and had numerous new customers to their booth, “we are extremely happy with the number and quality of visitors to Minister of Industry, and we have never had so many people visit our booth at a trade exhibition in Southeast Asia before.” The results for the 2011 edition exceeded all pre-exhibition expectations, and attracted visiting delegations from India, Malaysia, Northern Thailand, Vietnam, and Philippines, including a visiting delegation from West Africa, on an exchange programme through the Thai Packaging Centre. Thailand’s Minister of Industry, Wannarat Channukul, who opened the exhibition, commented that the show provided an excellent networking forum among international and Thai companies. He added this would assist in jointly creating and enhancing Thailand’s manufacturing standards and practices. The initial results of the visitor survey confirm the impressions of exhibitors. Particularly striking is the exhibition’s internationality, which underlines its standing as the region’s most important trade exhibition in its sector. •

Volatile Thailand and changed mindsets Thailand is known as a digital printing hub, yet conventional printing attracted substantial visitors to Pack Print International (PPI) 2011. Chaiyos Kongthaisereekul, managing director of Nationwide Co Ltd, distributor for Xingraphics, feels paralleling will occur. He tells Christel Lee of PPPA why. Fruitful partnership with Xingraphics Xingraphics, represented by Nationwide Co Ltd, has been gradually gaining its position as a world-class plate supplier. Since commencing the partnership in late 2008, today Nationwide has clients, which include leading printers, publishers and repro houses, satisfied with Chengdu-based Xingraphics’ products. Kongthaisereekul was quick to point out that initially the market wasn’t ready to accept the newcomer. “Every country has the same prejudice against Chinamade products. Nationwide Co therefore adopted a different approach. Prior to our collaboration, I made a personal visit to Xingraphics in Chengdu with our technical team. “Witnessing for myself that Xingraphics’ plates are manufactured with high quality aluminium from Germany and Japan is an added form of assurance I can extend to customers when I introduce Xingraphics’ products,” he highlights. Nationwide Co Ltd shares a fruitful partnership with Xingraphics as its distributor in Thailand. Kongthaisereekul notes, “Nationwide Co has been in the prepress business for many years. Our customers have faith in us – which helps in shaping the stereotypical mindsets, not to mention that customers are experienced and know when they are sold an inferior product. However, there were some who had reservations and we insisted they give Xingraphics a try. “I believe the key to customers’ faith in both Nationwide Co and Xingraphics is the know-how plus the technical

Conventional and digital printing will eventually be parallel While the number of offset press manufacturers exhibiting at PPI 2011 may have been an earth shaker to some, others felt such a trend is inevitable. Kongthaisereekul, has also noted the heat in the competition. However, he believes both can co-exist to better address the needs of the market.

As much as it seemed to be a natural thing to do, it was not a smooth process. Kongthaisereekul recalls, “Customers were not ready for digital printing two years back when we tried to introduce the concept. Some got hostile towards digital printing then. Today, they are more receptive as they have understood that the emergence of digital is inevitable.”

He said, “The printing market has been getting more competitive lately. It is our duty to provide our customers with the best products accompanied by competitive prices. It’s also our duty to update our customers on the developments in the technologies. In prepress, we have observed rapid changes in technology triggered by drastic price hikes of film for colour separation.

When quizzed if the market in Thailand views both as being competitive in nature, his response reflected that this is no longer the case. “Customers have realised they may lose certain sectors of the business such as short-run jobs, or personalised printing, if they don’t adopt digital printing. They have also grown to be more open and some have also embraced its existence. I personally feel that eventually both conventional and digital printing will be parallel, and a printer has to adopt both methods of printing to sustain the business in a competitive market,” he shares. •

Heidelberg Thailand ends Pack Print International 2011 with strong sales At the Pack Print 2011 exhibition held in Bangkok from 31st August to 3rd September, Heidelberg Thailand displayed Commercial, Short Run, and Digital solutions around 20,000 visitors over the 4 days. Heidelberg Thailand successfully achieved its objective of addressing the needs of medium and small printers. The stand displayed Speedmaster SM 74-4 and Anicolor SM 52-4-L offset presses supported by Polar 115XC cutter, Stahlfolder KH 66, Suprasetter A105 CtP image setter and Prinect workflow. The digital solution demonstrated a Ricoh Pro C901 digital print production press and Polar 66 small format cutter. Heidelberg Services were integrated into the overall booth concept to show Heidelberg’s capability for Service, Spare Parts, Consumables, and Remarketed solutions. Additionally, Heidelberg Thailand promoted its new Online Shop (OLS) to prepare for the launch in early November 2011 which will allow customers to purchase consumables via the internet 24 hours a day. OLS also enables unique shopping lists to be set up so customers can very easily buy consumables matched to the equipment the customer is running. This makes selection and ordering very simple.

The commitment of the Thai Government to the Print Media Industry was clearly demonstrated as the exhibition was official opened by His Excellency Wannarat Channukul, Minister of Industry. Thailand’s strategic location in South East Asia, ensured that of the more than 20,000 visitors attending, about 2,000 came from neighbouring countries such as Laos, Vietnam, and Burma. Staff and customers were especially impressed by the attendance of Mr. Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board, responsible for Heidelberg Equipment along with Lead Market Singapore Head Bent Mortensen and other

support staff from the regional office eager to help make the expo a success. Over the 4 days, the stand was packed with visitors from early morning to late evening and the 6 daily “Total Solution” presentations were filled over flow with customers standing behind the seating to see what was on offer. Customers were inspired by what they saw and during the show orders for equipment and consumables exceeded expectations. Customer’s showed confidence in Heidelberg’s wide range and support capability with commitments on presses, digital printers, CtP devices and finishing equipment. Many sales leads were also generated giving the Heidelberg Thailand team a huge opportunity to close further orders in the coming months. Improves UV-Setter efficiency basysPrint has drawn on its expertise in operating UV-Setters to develop a 'Touch Setter' that features a completely new graphical user interface (GUI) and state-of-the-art software. The new exposure unit interface ensures fast, highly consistent operation via a simple and intuitive touch screen interface. The operating concept behind the basysPrint exposure unit revolves around ‘touch menus’. Fitted with a touch screen, it can be used for file management, ongoing operations, settings, maintenance and servicing. The UV-Setter can also be controlled from any computer on the network, or even via wireless portable devices.

Epson Establishes Textile Printing Center in Kyoto Decorated with complex, vivid patterns, strips of smooth silk approximately one meter in width emerge rapidly from the printer. Jointly developed by Epson and Italy's Robustelli, the Monna Lisa inkjet textile printer uses a type of staining technique to print designs onto fabrics. These fabrics are processed into items such as clothing, ties and scarfs by apparel makers, and are sold to customers. Epson regards textiles as a growth business and is bolstering its efforts around its inkjet textile printer. The Monna Lisa inkjet textile printer and apparel created using digital techniques. Among others, the printer is capable of printing directly onto cotton, linen, wool, nylon and polyester. Epson's belief in the potential of textile printing is based around a shift in the industry from analog to digital techniques. While traditional analog printing techniques require plates to be pressed against the fabric, digital techniques mean that fabric can be printed out without the need for expensive plates. This ensures that digital textile

printing can be achieved at lower cost and in shorter times. Epson first entered this market back in 2003 when it jointly developed with

Robustelli, a leading Italian manufacturer of printing machines, a digital textile printer based on Epson's proprietary Micro Piezo inkjet technology The Monna Lisa, which is sold under the Robustelli brand, is now driving the digital textile industry in Italy. According to Epson's research, more than 60% of the items printed on high-productivity textile printers in Italy in 2010 were printed on the Monna Lisa. Kyoto was selected not simply because it is a traditional center for the textile industry in Japan, but for its ready access to the many related companies in the surrounding regions. Today, that is simply no longer good business." The PPI Top 100 - most companies in the black Once again, International Paper (IP) heads PPI's Top 100 listing (for fiscal year 2010, based on pulp, paper, converting and merchanting operations), outpacing its closest competitor, Procter & Gamble (P&G), by an almost two-to-one margin, about the same as the 2009 figures. IP had PPCM sales of $24,959 million compared with P&G's $14,736 million. Sales figures for both companies are up slightly over 2009 levels. Of course, if consolidated sales for the same period are looked at, consumer products giant P&G and Japanese behemoth Marubeni far outpace the rest of the Top 100 with total sales of $78,938 million and $102, 705 million respectively. Overall, the listing did not have as much swing as other years. The top 10 remained albeit in slightly different order. Stora Enso moved up to third from fifth. Oji dropped down a spot to fourth. Nippon Paper rounded out the top five, up from sixth a year ago. In order, the rest of the Top 10 were: SCA, UPM, Kimberly-Clark, SmurfitKappa and Mondi. Coming off a severe recession, most companies were able to post earnings figures that were in the black. Two in particular, AbitibiBowater and SmurfitStone (since taken over by RockTenn) showed remarkable turnarounds

although these were helped in no small part by "fresh start accounting" following bankruptcies. As perhaps can be expected, Chinese companies continued their climb up the sales ladder. Nine Dragons led the way moving into No. 31 on the list with PPCM sales of $2,647 million. This is the highest post a Chinese company had held in the listings. It also marks a big climb for Nine Dragons, which was No. 39 on the list in 2010 and 44 in 2009. All showed strong jumps in PPCM sales Chinese companies now occupy three spots in the top 50 with Shandong Chenming coming in at No. 35 and Lee & Man at No, 46. Reflecting the growth of most Asian pulp and paper companies, not just the Chinese, India's BILT moved up 11 spots to 84 on the list, with PPCM

sales of $834.3 million in 2010, up from $566 million in 2009. There are only two newcomers to the Top 100: Shandong Bohui, another going Chinese concern, which came in at 94 after just missing the 2010 list; Portugal's Altri is the other, making its debut at No. 98. Spain's ENCE, which just made the list last year at the 100 spot, jumped all the way to No. 85, showing a 65% increase in PPCM sales. In an encouraging sign compared with the past two years, PPCM sales showed an increase of just less than 10% to almost $304,000 million. Paper and board production also showed an increase in 2010 following two years of decline. Production topped 199 million tonnes in 2010, compared with 187.5 million tonnes in 2009. Market pulp also showed some growth, up by about

Sustainability has arrived at print shops Environmental protection, like sustainability, is a global issue of ever increasing importance that also affects the print media industry. Heidelberg therefore played host once again to the international Environmental Dialog at the Print Media Academy on the occasion of the presentation of the second Heidelberg ECO Printing Award.

Guests included the award winners and the print shops nominated for the award – in other words, companies that have long been committed to environmental protection. The participants discussed current and future environmental trends with Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment, and the members of the independent panel of judges. The entries submitted for the environmental award show a clear move toward fully integrated sustainability management. As well as print shops' environmental commitment, the importance attached to social factors is increasing all the time. According to the participants, the next step involves saving increasingly scarce resources such as water, utilizing intelligent heat recovery systems in the pressroom, and above all allowing employees and end customers to play a part in the sustainability process. “The idea behind the award and the Environmental Dialog is to motivate print shops throughout the world to strengthen their commitment to environmental protection even further and to offer an international platform for sharing ideas and learning from each other,” explained Plenz, who presided over the Environmental Dialog. According to one participant, New Zealand, for example, is only at the start of the CO2 debate compared to Europe. And yet an increasing number of print shops there are applying for certification, while the demand from

Ltd. in Auckland. Participants all agreed that a commitment to sustainability pays dividends. A growing number of end customers expect suppliers to employ an environmental production process for print products, while state-of-theart machinery and improved processes

also help cut costs. “We process around 6,000 jobs a year and five percent of these are now produced using climateneutral printing,” explained Rob Nugent from Australian print shop Vega Press, which won the award for the top sustainable innovative solution at the Heidelberg ECO Printing Award. This proportion is set to rise in the next few years, as the Australian government is planning a CO2 tax. The print shop has tripled its sales in the last few years and the proportion of jobs produced using climate-neutral printing has risen to 10 percent over the same period. A five-strong environment team with members from all departments and supported by external consultants serves as a forge for new ideas and putting in place a continuous improvement process. Employees are integrated and committed – this is one of the reasons why Druckstudio GmbH was selected as one of the 100 best employers in Germany. The environment team at the Druckerei Lokay print shop in Reinheim in the German state of Hesse is soon to be expanded by “Social affairs and occupational health and safety”. “Our vision is a code of practice for all employees, where fun also has an essential role to play in keeping people motivated,” observed Thomas Fleckenstein from Lokay. In his view, the environmental management system based on EMAS III, staff training, and external activities such as marketing and customer support are key to sustainability. Ann Marie Keene from The John Roberts Printing Company in the U.S. – which this year won the award for most sustainable printing company – agreed: “People are important to us – we train our employees, produce a sustainability report every year, and offer our customers tours of the company during which we show them the printing process and how we can save resources. Our customers never fail to be impressed by how much paper waste we eliminate by using Prinect Inpress Control.” Seminars for customers are a big success at The John Roberts Printing Company, providing information on areas such as paper selection and other criteria for direct mailings and offering suggestions and new ideas on how to raise efficiency in communications. An exemplary contribution to boosting staff motivation was presented by Polish print shop Werner Kenkel Spólka z o.o. This corrugated board manufacturer and packaging printer provided its almost 600 employees with training on the environment last year. Now, every time employees log onto their computers, they are asked randomly selected environmental

questions from a list of 500 and are only granted access if they answer correctly. The family business also donated 600 bikes for climate-neutral travel to work – even the directors cycle to work. “As an additional incentive, we reward our employees for good ideas. This cuts down waste and improves processes. There's an extra bonus for reducing paper waste in printing,” explained technical customer service manager Radoslaw Jedrzejczak. Need for lobbying for print products One extensively discussed topic was people's perception of the CO2 footprint of print versus online. A lot more educational work is necessary in this area to eliminate misconceptions about print and “dispel the myth that printing is harmful to the environment,” as Michael Keene from The John Roberts Company explained. Countless studies show that the Internet is not more eco-friendly. For example, two Google searches equate to the energy required to bring a pot of water to boil. The advantages of print include value retention and high-quality products. “I view print as a form of communication. We're finding that catalog production has increased once again and processing in this sector is of higher quality, featuring surface finishing, scents, and use of a very wide range of materials,” explained Arnfried Sittner from Kessler Druck und Medien

GmbH & Co. KG in Bobingen. “Print also scores highly thanks to its high recycling rate. Customers are increasingly printing to meet actual demand and products such as reference works are switching to the Internet, where they can be updated faster than in a print version,” added Dr. Achim Schorb from the IFEU (Institute for Energy and Environmental Research) in Heidelberg. Participants welcomed the commitment by Heidelberg in offering a global platform for environmental protection in the printing industry with the Heidelberg ECO Printing Award. “All the companies taking part, the candidates on the shortlist, and naturally the award winners provide impressive proof that integrated ecofriendly media production is the future and the right way to go about reducing global warming and protecting our environment for future generations. Overall we'd like to see a common network that pools the activities of the various task forces on sustainability (such as the FSC – Forest Stewardship Council – or Media Mundo) but also provides anyone interested from other companies with the positive examples of the award winners,” said Rainer Litty, Head of Print Production at WWF Germany (World Wide Fund For Nature), at the close of the Environmental Dialog. •

Outstanding potential as a printing press Yiwu Wansheng Color Printing Co. Ltd. is located in Yiwu City in Zhejiang Province, China. Boasting a facility of 15,000 square meters, Yiwu Wansheng is one of the few printing companies certified for printing publications in Yiwu City. With a perfect workflow of design, platemaking, printing, and postpress, the printer creates various high-end items such as commercial packaging, illustrated books and other publications as well as paper bags and business cards, using stock from 65 to 400 gsm (mainly art book paper). Clients include many renowned cosmetics manufacturers and publishing companies. Yiwu Wansheng Color Printing was founded in 2002 and started its journey with approximately 30 employees and one second-hand Manroland press and one Beiren press. As the head of the company, General Manager Zhao Pinhui skillfully obtained business opportunities in the market with his

remarkable talent and vision. Although there was a huge need for commercial printing in the Yiwu printing market, in 2002 there was no printing company that operated exclusively for commercial printing in Yiwu City. Mr. Zhao made well-timed decisions with the goal of improving print quality by introducing a new press to focus on commercial printing and also to start package printing. Purchasing a Komori press: an astute decision In the second half of 2002, Yiwu Wansheng learned about the Komori brand through another printing company. To make the best investment decision, the printer meticulously

compared various printing press manufacturers, including Komori and other makers. After careful consideration, Yiwu Wansheng Color Printing decided to purchase the Komori four-color Lithrone 28. Mr. Zhao describes the company’s journey: “Looking back now, I truly believe we made the best decision. The facility is powerfully equipped with the Komori machines as its dominant presses, and the number of employees has now risen to more than 200. The arrival of the Komori E-429 In December 2010, the company introduced a new printing press, the Enthrone 29, Komori’s new sheetfed offset printing press. The Komori press is equipped with Semi-APC (semiautomatic plate-changing system), uses a benderless clamping system to eliminate the plate-bending process and shorten the plate-changing time even further. The new press is also equipped with an automatic cleaning system that not only shortens the blanket-cleaning time by using presoaked microencapsulated cloth but also decreases consumption of cloth to offer even greater environmental protection. Popular compact platform, new press launch, new finishing options At this year’s IFRA Expo in Vienna, KBA on stand B810 will focus on its popular compact platform comprising the Commander CT and Cortina, two popular models which are selling particularly well in Germany, Scandinavia and Italy.

KBA is expanding this platform with the modular, mid-range Commander CL, a conventional four-high tower press available with a choice of automation levels. A further focus will be inline coating in waterless coldset with the KBA Cortina. Once again KBA will be sharing its stand with its Indian partner The Printers House (TPH), whose single-width Orient presses target printers in threshold economies. KBA’s compact philosophy defines the trend As the market leader KBA continues to set the pace in innovative newspaper press technology. There has been brisk demand among European newspaper publishers for the KBA Commander CT, with its unique features, easy handling and impressive flexibility. This is evidenced by the fact that 22 doubleand triple-width press lines with a total of 106 towers have been sold to date. Alongside German and Swedish newspaper houses a longstanding KBA user in Italy has opted for a customised Commander CT with heatset capability. A hybrid heatset/coldset version of its waterless counterpart, the KBA Cortina, of which 18 4/1, 4/2 and 6/2 press lines comprising 84 towers have been sold so far, went live a few months ago in Sweden. The biggest Cortina hybrid press to date – consisting of twelve 4/1 towers and four thermal dryers – will soon launch into action at Gulf News in the Dubai desert. Singlewidth four-high tower presses like the KBA Comet primarily target printers in high-growth markets such as China and Africa. For example, Société de Presse et d’Editions du Cameroun in Jaunde is taking delivery of a Comet to print books and newspapers.

Broad service portfolio KBA’s extensive after-sales services will be a further focus at this year’s IFRA Expo, with the group offering console retrofits, press overhauls with new controls and drives, and reconfigurations for four-overfour. manroland posts order gains in the first half of 2011 manroland is benefiting from the economic recovery and continuing strong demand in the growth regions. In the first half of 2011, manroland recorded a rise in orders for both the sheetfed and webfed sector. Compared with the same period in the previous year, incoming orders rose by 13% to total 520 million euros. The already good volume of orders in the sheetfed sector increased slightly once again (+2%). Last year the webfed sector was not yet able to benefit from the recovery but in the period under review tracked the positive development of the sheetfed sector and recorded considerable gains in orders (+33%). manroland achieved an operating result (EBIT) of -25 million euros and thus reduced the losses incurred in the previous year by almost half. The product innovations developed in response to demand were significant drivers behind the success in recent months. One pleasing aspect is the annual growth of more than 4% in the services business that is to be expanded: spare parts and maintenance concepts (printservices), along with consumable materials (printcom). With 435 million euros, total sales were around 7% higher than in the previous year. The main drivers of growth were the BRIC countries. Here, manroland benefited especially from the strong demand in China. Due to the importance

of growth markets for manroland’s business, the company decided to take over control of the sales and service networks in South America, southern Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand in 2009. This market organization has been able to achieve great success in the meantime. As in the past, the export ratio remained stable at around 80%.

With a gain in orders and increased sales, manroland achieved a pleasing result for the first half of 2011,” reports manroland CEO Gerd Finkbeiner. “The strategic alliance with Océ in the digital printing sector will further strengthen manroland’s leading position in the future. With technical innovations like product safety in packaging printing, automation features with robot technology for newspaper presses, and new developments in high-volume commercial web offset printing, we are showing that print has a bright future.” This positive development has also had an effect on the employment situation: short-time work at the Offenbach factory, which has become necessary due to the economic crisis, ended in June. On group level, the job cuts already announced due to long-

term capacity alignment are running according to plan. By the end of 2012, the number of employees is scheduled for reduction to under 6,000. Not including external personnel and trainees, as of June 30, 2011, manroland had a total staff of 6,630 worldwide, with approximately 84% in Germany. This represents a decrease of roughly 11% from the previous year. Outlook Despite the positive development, manroland does not expect a return to the boom level of 2007. “We are assuming 75% of the pre-crisis volume in the sheetfed sector and around 60% in the webfed sector. Measured against the boom year, our sheetfed results at present are at approximately 60%, and webfed almost 50%,” says Finkbeiner. For the full year 2011, manroland targets sales of more than one billion euros. The product innovations for commercial and sheetfed printing presented in the first half of 2011 were greeted enthusiastically by international customers and are bound to stimulate sales in the second half of 2011. The partnership with Océ and the resulting opportunities for combining both offset and digital printing have also generated strong interest amongst customers. The IFRA Expo fair in Vienna in October will bring further impetus to newspaper printing. A slight decline in demand is nevertheless expected, particularly in China.

The new manroland Industrial Services business sector was established on January 1, 2011 and now has around 100 employees. In the medium term, this number is expected to increase to about 300. manroland offers the services of highly qualified personnel for the engineering sector and thus responds to the growing demand for specialized skilled staff. Another growth area is the new business sector manroland Mechatronic Systems in Plauen, which supports customers through expanding their development and production capacity. On request, manroland takes over the complete realization of

projects, as well as manufacturing and assembly of individual components – from large assemblies right up to plant and equipment that works in tolerances measured in micrometers. The two new business sectors that were established in the course of the strategic realignment announced in fall 2010 are expected to already make a positive contribution to the company’s earnings in the second half of 2011. They show how manroland’s core expertise can also be successfully utilized beyond the company’s core business.•

Materials that uses biomass polyethylene Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. has developed Japan’s first film for use in packaging materials that uses biomass polyethylene (PE). A full-scale sale was launched in August 2011. In order to contribute to the realisation of a sustainable society, Toppan Printing engages in the development of products that are environmentally friendly. This new product is a film that partially uses a raw material derived from sugarcane and has a biomass ratio of up to 40% (ratio by weight).

While using a raw material derived from plants, the film retains the same performance as existing films in terms of properties such as shock resistance and ease of tearing. This product is being used for standing refill pouches for items such as hair care products.

Polyethylene is a material that is the base for many types of flexible packaging. With the development of this biomass polyethylene film, it has become possible for the first time in Japan to provide biomass packaging materials in all areas of flexible packaging.

Profile Biomass plastic is a renewable resource that uses plant-based raw materials and can be used sustainably. It can contribute to the creation of a sustainable society as it enables a reduction in the use of fossil resources such as oil. In addition, since it is considered that the volume of CO2 generated during incineration and the volume absorbed during the growth of the plant cancel each other out, it is receiving attention as an environmentally friendly material that can reduce CO2 emissions in comparison with oil-based plastics.

Overview of the product This product achieves a reduction in the use of oil by replacing oil-based linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with a film that partially uses LLDPE derived from sugar cane. For example, in the case of a standing refill pouch that uses the new film, by replacing part of the oil-based LLDPE that accounts for around 75% of the total material with LLDPE derived from sugar cane, it is possible to reduce CO2 emissions during incineration by up to 40%(*).

Sales target Toppan Printing is targeting sales of ÂĽ12 billion in fiscal 2015 for its biomass plastic product business as a whole. Future developments Using the know-how acquired in the development of this product, Toppan Printing will aim to expand the use of biomass PE as a packaging material for other products and proactively advance the development of packaging using biomass plastics such as biomass high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polylactate, and biomass PET. * When 1 kg of this product with a typical structure is incinerated, 2.95 kg of CO2 derived from plastic is generated. If the percentage of biomass in the product is 40%, the volume of biomass-derived CO2 released is 1.25 kg. Because the CO2 derived from biomass is not counted, there is a 42.4% reduction (1.25/2.95=42.4%). If the CO2 derived from ink and adhesives is included, the final CO2 reduction is around 40%.

Sankei Shimbun Printing Co. achieves greater colour Sankei Shimbun Printing Co., the Japanese newspaper publisher, is set to deliver precision print quality after installing QuadTech's color control and register control technology at its Hokusetsu (Osaka) plant. Sankei Shimbun enhanced four of its Goss International Newsliner presses with QuadTech's Color Control and Web Inspection System with AccuCam, Register Guidance System with MultiCam® and ICONTM integrated communication platform. Mr. Toru Uesaka, Director of the Production Bureau at Sankei Shimbun, comments: "QuadTech worked very closely with us to meet extremely high standards of colour quality, meeting the proof to NSAC standards. With the AccuCam, we are confident that we can provide a high quality paper that satisfies both readers and advertisers." Mr. Kentaro Kanoya, of Sankei Shimbun's Production Bureau Engineering Department, added that the plant where AccuCam is installed now produces the best colour quality in the Sankei group, and has established the colour standard for all Sankei plants to meet. "I'm convinced," said QuadTech President Karl Fritchen, "that the success we're having with AccuCam performance is a direct result of working with development partners who demanded nothing but excellence from us." A crucial factor persuading Sankei Shimbun to invest was the AccuCam's ability to ensure accuracy and consistency in color reproduction. The system provides fully automatic closedloop colour control by automatically controlling the ink-key settings. An image-based system, AccuCam uses pre-press image files to create L*a*b* target aim point values. Its six-channel sensor measures the printed web and calculates the L*a*b* values of the

entire image, then brings the printed image to the specified L*a*b* target values and automatically maintains the color values throughout the production run. The key to defect reductions is AccuCam's high sensitivity to colour deviations, and the speed with which it carries out remedial action. The system typically begins measuring and controlling colour within the first 150 copies. AccuCam controls all process colours equally and with consistency throughout the production shift, completing an ink-key analysis cycle every 19 seconds. In comparison, human effectiveness fluctuates wildly throughout a shift, due to dips in concentration and fatigue. Sankei Shimbun conducted tests, comparing manual adjustment to AccuCam automatic control. The results showed variation to the printing standard was 4.54 ∆E in manual,

and 2.61 ∆E in AccuCam automatic control-exceeding Sankei's expectation of 3.00 ∆E. The tests also showed better-than-expected color consistency from press to press, with very small variation of 1.00 ∆E. QuadTech's Register Guidance System with MultiCam identifies register marks as small as 0.36 mm (0.014 in) at speeds up to 17.8 M/sec (3,500 ft/min). All control equipment is run from QuadTech's communication platform, ICON, for easy recall of set-up data, while Data Central has also been included to for improved monitoring of press and process performance. The Sankei Shimbun, published by the group and founded 1933, is Japan's sixth best-selling daily newspaper, with a circulation of nearly 2.2 million copies. The publisher is also responsible for a number of popular consumer newspapers, including the million-selling daily, Sankei Sports. •

Automation in Finishing In order to increase competitiveness and strengthen their market position, producers of magazines, reviews and advertising brochures have to recognise that the attractiveness of products and productivity are of fundamental importance.

Within companies, binderies generally have the reputation of being time personell and cost intensive. “Wrongfully,” underlines Felix Stirnimann, Marketing Manager in Zofingen/CH. He emphatically points out that this greatly depends on the choice of system. Furthermore, automated saddle stitcher systems from Muller Martini have significantly helped improve productivity in finishing across the world. Publishers’ binderies are regularly coming under fire for occupying too many people on the finishing machines in comparison with other sections of the printing house. “This may be true, but the accusation is not justified,” insists Felix Stirnimann. “The number of workers required to complete a brochure or magazine primarily depends on which buffer variant one chooses. It stands to reason that feeding a system by hand requires considerably more personnel than feeding with logs or via PrintRoll.” Factors for Increase in Productivity

Therefore Stirnimann advocates – at least in the mid to high performance sectors – consistent automation in finishing: “This applies predominately to feeding and palletizing.” The requirements for modern saddle stitcher systems are therefore heading in three directions: 1. High Net Output In order to produce the required quantities cost-effectively, the machines – particularly in the mid to high-performance range – have to run at near maximum performance for long periods of time. In addition to speed, operational comfort and system reliability are important factors for success. Stirnimann says: “Here our sophisticated quality controls have made our saddle stitchers the safest and most reliable on the market.” 2. Fast Setup As job and format changes are continually increasing, an intelligent control system is becoming increasingly important. Amrys (Automatic Make Ready System) can reduce the setup times for

Muller Martini machines by up to 50%. This can be particular advantageous for continually changing job structures. “In addition, all new Muller Martini saddle stitcher models can be integrated into digital workflow according to the CIP4 standard,” emphasises Stirnimann. “The trend towards digital workflow was already clear at Drupa 2004, and at the coming Drupa it will most definitely be the main focus for many exhibitors.” 3. Automated Feeding and Palletising “There is little use in having the fastest saddle stitcher, if signatures cannot be quickly fed and the finished products quickly delivered,” insists Stirnimann. Feeding with streamfeeders, logs and rolls means Muller Martini is automating the processes as it is doing with bundle building and delivery systems which palletize and deliver the products at the end of every print finishing operation. Stirnimann suggests that this log length could be prohibitive in terms of performance. “One achieves considerably higher loading performance per person with logs of 1200 mm length. Furthermore, short logs require 50% more end board.” As the “Buffer Systems” diagram shows, Muller Martini presumes that when using logs, one person is required per four to five feeders – a considerable reduction in manpower in binderies.

It is clear that hand feeding offers the highest level of flexibility in production but is also the most personnel-intensive way. For a saddle stitching system with eight feeders operating with a medium production speed of 14 000 copies, it is assumed that five to six operators are required. (Compare diagram). Automating Feeding with Streamfeeders This is why Muller Martini already offers automation for the hand feeding of its mid-performance range saddle stitchers via short streamfeeders. They are compactly built and can be changed from hand feeding to automatic log feeding in a matter of minutes. The advantages of the streamfeeders are clear: In the first stage, the logs are reformed into thick shingles which are transported to the feeder. In the second stage, the signatures are separated with an accelerating belt and protectively placed in the hopper. This means that no extra care is required in order to bring the products into the hopper. In addition, the entire mechanism, which measures the log height in the hopper, is controlled via a sensor. This guarantees the same requirements for the separation process every time, which has a significant effect on the system’s net output. Streamfeeders are therefore the ideal

loading device for signatures and covers. Setup and changeover time is saved thanks to motorised adjustments. In just a matter of minutes, the attachable log feeding module turns the hand-fed streamfeeders into an automatic log feeding system for variable size logs. Log Feeding is State of the Art The finishing of signature logs in middle and large print runs has established itself in the production of saddle stitched print products due to its profitability. The continual material flow significantly increases the saddle stitchers’ net output and guarantees that machines are constantly running. “A main point about log feeding is the log quality,” underlines Felix Stirnimann. “The logs must have neatly jogged signatures without any protruding signature parts

The logs can be ergonomically fed with a crane system. The stream feeders can be easily relocated thanks to transport rolls and then freely used at any station. Maximum Automation with Roll Feeding “Automation with rolls may be a big investment but it offers the highest level of automation for saddle stitcher feeding,” explains Stirnimann. “Even for multiple production lines, feeding by PrintRoll only requires one person who brings all the rolls to the saddle stitcher and the empty rolls back into the store.” Roll feeding guarantees continuous and highly efficient workflow. This can be further optimised with a fully-automatic logistics system – as has already been done on numerous occasions by Muller Martini. •

HP phasing out solvent July has been a month of bold moves for HP. In Shanghai, China, the company has announced an expanded range of new digital printing solutions. A bold statement was made: “… we feel solvent won’t be around…” Christel Lee reports. Renowned in the industry for its 75% water-based latex inks, HP has executed initial steps that will strengthen PSPs’ (print service providers) value proposition to their customers – allowing them to capture a larger share of the fastgrowing signage industry in Asia Pacific. Unveiled in Shanghai, in conjunction with the recent 19th Shanghai International Advertising & Sign Technology & Equipment Exhibition, the HP 126-inch Scitex LX850 printer is the latest addition to the HP Scitex fleet. Also showcased was the HP Scitex FB7500 printer. The republic is known for its intensive solvent-based printing for outdoor advertising. Gido Van Praag, vice president of graphics solutions business, imaging and print group for Asia Pacific and Japan, commented on the difference between printing in the republic versus other parts of the world.

“China is growing faster than anywhere else in the world of digital printing. We compete with at least 50-60 other players in China alone, in comparison to other parts of the world. To remain competitive involves more than providing good products – we need to be reachable to customers who need assistance. We work with direct sales, so it’s imperative that we prudently select the channels that have the capabilities to boost our links with the customers in the country,” Van Praag highlights. Yariv Avisar, vice president and general manager, large-format printing industrial solutions, imaging and printing group, commented on industry response to the new presses. “We will soon be installing some 100 units of the HP Scitex FB7500 printer globally. The installations of HP Scitex FB7500 printers in Asia Pacific and Japan are in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Philippines. HP also has orders from Indonesia and China and these are going to be installed this quarter. We hope to install some 20 units of HP Scitex LX850 printer before the end of this year,” he said. Designed for fast-paced, industrial printing environments, the HP Scitex FB7500 printer is a versatile UV flatbed printer that is an ideal solution for closeview high-quality point-of-purchase/ point-of-sale applications, exhibition graphics, signage, backit displays and posters. It boasts speeds up to 500m2/ hr (5380sqft/hr) and three-quarter automated loading to reduce idle time between sheets by up to 85%.

HP’s Scitex LX850 printer allows PSPs to differentiate, win new business and generate increased profits. It enables PSPs to expand the variety of environmentally-conscious outdoor and indoor applications they can offer while also improving their overall printing atmosphere. It is capable of printing on soft fabrics and textiles. Five units to date have been sold in Asia, the first to Australia and a few in China. While many players in the industry are dishing out teaser products in preparation for the next drupa, Avisar remains tightlipped when quizzed about possible breakthroughs for inks after its generation of latex ink technology. •

FUJIFILM inks first to be approved by the Soil Association Certification FUJIFILM announces that over 50 products from three of its Sericol screen printing textile ink ranges have been approved by the Soil Association Certification to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for use in organic textile processing. FUJIFILM is the first company to have products approved under the Soil Association Certification’s new ‘Approved Inputs for Textiles Scheme’. This new scheme will help organic textile and garment manufacturers to source low-impact textile processing chemicals. Georgina Thomas, Soil Association Certification textile specialist, said: “We are excited to announce that FUJIFILM is the first company to offer Soil Association approved inputs for organic textiles. These inks meet strict criteria on toxicity and biodegradability according to GOTS, the international gold standard

for organic textile processing. Look out for our Approved symbol on products.” Jon Harper-Smith, marketing manager, FUJIFILM Graphic Systems Europe comments: “We are delighted to have achieved this approval from the Soil Association Certification that demonstrates FUJIFILM’s commitment to sustainability. FUJIFILM has undertaken an extensive research and development programme focused on developing inks with performance characteristics that meet the Soil Association Certification guidelines. The research involved carefully balancing print performance characteristics with the toxicological and ecological requirements that were necessary to meet the approval criteria. The products approved are from three of the Sericol screen printing textile ink ranges: Texiscreen Aqua AJ – a water based ink for direct printing Texcharge TC – a water based discharge ink for printing dark garments Pioneer Ultra YC – an opaque PVC-free and phthalate-free plastisol ink for printing line and process colours together with a range of special effects including high build, puff and suede The Soil Association has been working in organic textiles for over 10 years, and played a leading role in the development of GOTS, a standard which the Soil Association Certification now certifies to. The Soil Association textile licensees saw 35% sales growth in 2010. Xingraphics to host Authorised Distributor Meeting in Beijing Xingraphics has announced that it would host the Authorised Distributor Meeting on 19 – 21 October 2011 in Beijing. The leading company known for its quality CtP systems has revealed that it has been organising technical workshops for the past four years. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the company’s success, resulting in the decision to have something more elaborate for its valued partners. It manufactured more than one billion Original HP ink cartridges from closed loop RPET plastic, since the programme’s first cartridge appeared in 2005.

Since commissioning in December 2010, the lines have been kept very busy with circulations between 10,000 and half a million, and a further boost to orders is on the cards. Advertising customers have evidently recognized that quality and a fast service can be obtained from newspaper printers at favourable conditions. The two Polaris Trykk printing houses work with Ferag technology on the conventional newspaper-production side as well. Trondheim was among the first Scandinavian users of MSD inserting technology, while a RollSertDrum with an SNT-U trimming drum and StreamStitch stitching component went into operation in Harstad four years ago. The two StreamFold lines have a daily 15 hours of spare commercial production capacity at production speeds up to 60,000 copies per hour. Newspaper processing is routed independently through the Ferag inserting systems and is not affected by the quarterfold process.

Jet Press 720 demonstration machine in Europe

FUJIFILM today announces that it has installed the first Jet Press 720 in Europe in the company’s demonstration centre in Brussels. The installation was completed in late June 2011, with the company now carrying out final preparations for customer demonstrations which are due to start very soon. This follows the completion of a successful beta trial in Japan earlier this summer. The first European beta site is scheduled over the next few months, with full commercial availability in Europe planned for Q4 2011. “The commercial availability of the Jet Press 720 marks the start of a new era

for sheet-fed digital printing. Once imaged, the B2 sheet can be treated like an offset sheet, dropping into existing finishing equipment, with many special finishes possible. As a result, in terms of finishing flexibility, digital print can be treated more like offset print than ever before.

The chairman of the management board of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Bernhard Schreier, is the new president & chairman of the exhibitors’ advisory board of the leading global trade fair drupa. He takes over this role from Martin Weickenmeier, Managing Director Sales, Marketing and Service of Körber PaperLink GmbH. Weickenmeier is no longer available for the tasks of the drupa president as a result of the strategic reorientation of the Körber Group’s Paper Division and, therefore, resigned his office. Weickenmeier (56) had been the head of the executive committee of drupa since the last trade fair in 2008. “I am delighted to accept the role of drupa President at this particularly exciting and important time for our industry. drupa 2012 is a really crucial initiator for the print media industry, and I will contribute significantly to the successful planning and organization of it, “ said Schreier (57) who has been head of the world-wide largest printing press manufacturer since 1999. In recent years, large-size posters, in-store POP and window displays are produced increasingly in a smaller print runs, with short delivery time and with increased graphical designs. This has promoted the use of digital printing, with the printing service market based on wide-format inkjet printers expanding at the annual rate of 7%. The market is particularly embracing the use of wide-format inkjet printers that support UV-curable ink, which is environmentally friendly with no volatile organic compounds (VOC), fast-drying and suitable for printing on a wide range of materials including PET, acrylic, and polycarbonate substrates. The market segment continues to enjoy double-digit annual growth. The new Acuity LED 1600 is a highperformance wide-format inkjet printer featuring a proprietary-design LED light source, high precision and high speed printhead, and fast curing UV-LED ink. Fujifilm's proprietary Fast Accurate Marking technology enables best-in-class productivity of 20 square meters per hour to address customers' needs for short delivery time. The printer comes standard with eight color inks, namely cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan, light magenta, white and clear. When combined with the Intelligent Curing Control technology for controlling ink curing profile on printing substrates for improved ink-substrate affinity, the printer achieves wide color reproduction and smooth gradation. Enhanced ink adhesion also expands the range of substrates that can be used. Furthermore, the combined use of color ink and clear ink can produce highgloss output for premium finish. The printer also comes with Spot Color Matching software, which can automatically generate a color comparison chart against the desired output color. The Media and Precision Technology Company of Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd. participated in the International Graphic Arts Show 2011 (IGAS 2011) held at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan, from 16 – 21 September 16 2011. With its booth theme “Shift to Value Creation”, Screen introduced new business promotions by presenting case studies and printed samples offered by real major clients. In recent years, more and more promotion clients and print buyers have been looking for more flexible promotion methods including segmented or personalized marketing, in addition to traditional mass market campaigns. To satisfy these demands, printing companies are required to invest in new printing methods as well as to establish systems for efficient segmented and personalized promotion. Against this current background, at IGAS2011, Screen introduced case studies of various successful, realworld sales promotions by major clients

using Screen Print On Demand (POD) equipment. The company also showcased an optimal comprehensive workflow including Screen thermal CtP, Truepress Jet520, and Truepress JetSX units, as well as POD equipment manufactured by other companies. Screen also introduced various solutions enabling processing from order receipt through to final delivery based on collaborations with EQUIOSNET partners. Exhibited digital on-demand printing systems and workflows: Truepress JetSX The Truepress JetSX is a full-colour B2 sheet-fed inkjet printing system. In addition to providing high quality approaching offset printing, the system can print directly onto offset printing paper without pre-coating. Thanks to this, it is possible to achieve finishes that accentuate the texture (surface variation, luster) of the paper, facilitating the creation of materials with a very high level appearance. Truepress Jet520EX Monochrome More than 300 units of Truepress Jet520 series full-colour variable inkjet printing systems have already been shipped, and Screen will display a dedicated monochrome type unit from the series. The demonstration will be performed using an SED (single engine duplex) configuration, which is capable of duplex printing on sheet widths of up to 250 mm (9.84") on one unit. It will provide an opportunity to observe practical applications of monochrome type POD such as statements produced using variable printing and small lot books. EQUIOS It is a universal workflow that integrates the printing and prepress technology and know-how accumulated by Screen over many years plus cutting-edge inkjet printing technology. Regardless of an operator’s own experience, EQUIOS provides easy to use high-speed processing enabled by the latest RIP core, a practical and easy-to-use professional color management tool linked with paper information, and useful imposition schemes reflecting Screen’s accumulated prepress know-how.
