Nozomi Fireside Chat

EFI – The Fourth Industrial Revolution in Print The fourth industrial revolution is upon us, and the future of print looks good for those who embrace it – this was the theme in this year’s EFI Connect 2018. Sha Jumari finds out. “Was the presentation ok?” asked EFI’s Guy Gecht when we crossed paths right after his opening keynote speech at Connect 2018. I thought it unwarranted yet strangely endearing, since just 10 minutes ago, he held an entire ballroom full of print people captive for an hour. Gecht is the charismatic spokesman for EFI, adept at bringing ideas to life on a big stage. I first met the effervescent Gecht at drupa 2016, when the EFI Nozomi C18000 inkjet press for corrugated packaging was first introduced. Back then, EFI had also announced it was on track to meet the 2016 USD$1 billion revenue target, which Gecht ambitiously aimed for in 2010. At the close of 2016, EFI reported a $992.1 million – just shy of

MarketDirect print media design

reaching that billion-dollar target, but a remarkable feat nonetheless. That streak continues on, as shortly after Connect 2018 concluded, EFI announced a record revenue for Q4

and 2017. For the quarter ended 31 December 2017, the company reported record fourth quarter revenue of $269.2 million, up 1% compared to fourth quarter 2016 revenue of $266.7 million.

For 2017, EFI reported revenue of $993.3 million, up 0.1% year-over-year compared to 2016 figures. Not bad at all, considering for a short while in 2017, EFI’s stock took a tumultuous dive down as much as 43.8% due to muddled accounting practices. EFI celebrates its 30th birthday this year. For its size within the print industry, the Silicon Valley conglomerate is impressively young. In 23 years, Gecht has managed to bring EFI from a solely software company to the more comprehensive digital print company that it is today. With the visionary Gecht at its helm, I’m

confident that EFI company will join that elusive billion-dollar club. The Coming of the Fourth Industrial Revolution “Print is far from over,” boomed Gecht’s voice as he began his iconic keynote presentation. The thematic speech revolved around Industry 4.0, as Gecht extolled the coming of the fourth industrial revolution, and its impact on the print industry. “There is a power in the printed material. We are so bombarded with electronics that we default back to printed materials,” said Gecht. He referred to the nomophobia phenomenon, which is the fear of being out of cellular contact. As people are beginning to be aware on the negative impact of nomophobia, print will present itself as a better experience. “The Internet of Things changes our relationship with the physical world,” said Gecht. “With computers, cloud, connectivity around the world, the fourth industrial revolution is the emergence of artificial intelligence, robots, virtual reality. It changes how industries manufacture things. That has fundamental impact on the world, EFI Asia Pacific Director Andy Yarrow

and printing play a gigantic role in this because a lot of those industries love great images.” Gecht emphasised that artificial intelligence, or AI, is happening in a big way. He attributed this to three major reasons; big data, tremendous computation power in the cloud, and faster processing power in the device. The increased use of AI and robots will potentially accelerate growth in manufacturing. Concerning threats that robots can cause unemployment: “The countries that have the most amount of robots per capita are Japan, Germany and Korea. These countries also have very low unemployment rates. Robots do not cause unemployment,” said Gecht. “In fact, it allows us to do other things that can add value to the company and the world in other more important ways.” EFI is unsurprisingly on-board and aligned with AI, as Gecht unveiled the new virtual reality Nozomi initiative. The Nozomi VR system can be used for demos and can also allow engineers to remotely service the machine. In essence, you can have the “best engineer in the world see your printer now to figure out what’s going on with the machine.”

Print: The Bridge Between Virtual & Physical Worlds The fourth industrial revolution will fuel on-demand manufacturing, as it calls for more personalisation and frequent design changes.

be the only way to do the apparel of tomorrow. Digital process, colour management, and digital printing will be the key enablers in fashion as changes in design have fast turnover times now.

“Industries like fashion, building materials, display graphics, packaging, they will need a lot of the tools that we build over the years - us as an industry, not just EFI. This is every material in the world that needs images, that needs print. Those are much bigger markets than have ever been addressed before,” said Gecht.

Building Materials – Customisation on a broader category that includes home décor components such as flooring. For example, in printing wooden flooring designs on ceramic tiles which all of the advantages of the organic look of wood, but with none of the maintenance and care.

Industry 4.0 will change the way companies approach marketing: “We no longer target a market segment. We can target the people we want and we can give them the product we want.” The role of the print industry would be to translate the virtual world into the physical world. Some examples Gecht gave include: Packaging – Shipping boxes that are commonly brown and white, will now be digitally printed and customised to every customer. Apparel – As one of the most designdynamic industries, digital print will

“With that, we believe there is a new definition of print. This is no longer just documents, no longer just publishing. Print every material in the world that needs to have some images. If we as an industry embrace that, there is a bigger opportunity than we’ve ever addressed before,” said Gecht. Perfectly Poised for Industry 4.0 EFI is well-positioned for the new industrial revolution with two enabling platforms, inkjet printing and smart automation: “Those two platforms are what EFI is doing and not by accident. Those two platforms are key in the enablement in printing in the world,” said Gecht.

“Inkjet printing is the one single type of printing where you don't have to touch the material. It's a technology that is not dependent on the material. Inkjet is semi conductor driven so it can only get faster and better over time. The more we improve, the more application we can approach,” Gecht explained. Of smart automation: “In a word of fast customisation and fast job adoption, we have no time for the human touch. There needs to be a smart algorithm that can take design to e-commerce to production with minimal human contact.” In his closing remarks, Gecht borrowed advice from print veteran, Frank Romano, for print companies: Embracing digital print, defining your markets and excelling in them, and the ability to cut cost, without cutting quality. “My message today is the fourth industrial revolution is upon us. It is happening all around us, and it is happening in print. I think it will have a fundamental impact on our lives – in a good way. It is very exciting,” Gecht concluded. “New areas of print are substantially larger than ever before and we can go beyond what we’ve traditionally done. Which is why I say - Print is far from over.”

Durst launches P5 nextgeneration technology platform Durst, a manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies, has launched a new printing platform – the P5 series. The first member of the family is the large format printing flagship, P5 250 HS, with shipping starting from April.

The P5 250 HS is targeted towards high volume industrial production, as well as one-offs in offset quality. P5 relates to five core features at the heart of this technology: productivity, reliability, workflow, versatility and print quality. The P5 technology consists of a series of new generation printers along with newly, in-house developed software and workflow solutions. The family also has state of the art, touch operation based userinterfaces and leading-edge remote service capabilities. Everything is aimed and streamlined to maximize performance and uptime of the printing family, along with unparalleled flexibility in media and job handling. Durst’s iconic industrial design, which

was originally developed by the famous Ottl Eicher, has gone a further step with the P5. A design studio from Munich canvassed opinions from many customers and operators with a view to integrating their wishes into a new concept. This has been achieved for the P5 – and feedback will be incorporated into many Durst product lines in the future. When compared to the industry benchmark – Durst P10 250 HS – the new P5 is 70% more productive. Featuring latest MEMS nozzle plates powered by Durst proprietary datapath and electronics, the result is a high-speed printing system with ultra precise drop placement and industrial level reliability.

Durst P5 technology features: • Print volume capability in two-pass mode up to 240 sqm/h and high resolution modes of 1200 dpi • Offset printing quality with a dropsize of 5 pcl • Durst Analytics information platform for pre-emptive maintenance and detailed machine and consumption data to guarantee maximum uptime • Durst Workflow, which provides an inhouse developed suite of applications custom tailored for Durst printers and with unique features - beyond ripping. Durst Phototechnik AG 2 Christoph Gamper, Chief Executive of Durst Group, said: “The new P5 platform, including workflow software and advanced service tools, represents our key strategy to further invest into large format printing technology and further afield. We believe that there is a lot to explore in this market space and the P5 250 HS is our first statement. In an integrated world, printers need to change as well. With the P5 family we provide tools for change and profit – and our firm commitment to continue to lead the innovation in the large format market.”

United Airlines saves 643,000 litres of fuel by using lighter paper on inflight magazine What difference can 28 grams make on a plane? If you are United Airlines, with 4500 flights a day, it can add up. The Chicago-based carrier said it recently began printing its inflight magazine, Hemisphere, on lighter paper, cutting 28 grams from each magazine. It now weighs 194 grams. In an internal message to employees, United said it has also switched to lighter paper on its seatback service guides. The carrier operates 744 mainline planes that vary in size, carrying 50 to 366 passengers each. For a typical 737 plane carrying 179 passengers, the reduction would mean about five kilograms per flight. The airline said that slight weight reduction is saving 643,000 litres of fuel a year, or $US290,000 ($A357,000) in annual fuel costs. Last year, United stopped on-board sales of duty-free items - such as perfumes, chocolates and liquor cutting 5.2 million litres of fuel a year at a cost savings of $US2.3 million. The airline began introducing more

fuel efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliners to its fleet in 2014. The airline has ordered a total of 49 Dreamliners and has received 31 so far. The Dreamliner, the first commercial aircraft to be made from carbon fibre rather than aluminium, offers fuel savings of 20 per cent compared to previous aircraft, according to Boeing. It has since introduced the aircraft to its Australian routes, flying Sydney to

Los Angeles, Sydney to San Francisco and Melbourne to Los Angeles using Dreamliners. Earlier this month it began non-stop flights from Sydney to Houston, a 15 hour, 40 minute flight, which takes 17.5 hours on the return leg. The new 13,850km route is ranked the world's fourth longest scheduled commercial flight by distance.

NPES Rebrands as Association for Print Technologies NPES (The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies) announced a name change to the Association for Print Technologies (APT). The rebranding marks a defining moment in the association’s 85-year history, and is a nod to its signature annual event PRINT®. The new name will also signify progress towards its “Strategic Business Plan” for the industry, that it first launched in January 2017. “This rebrand of the organisation signals a significant turning point, not just for our Association, but for the entire printing and imaging industry. The convergence in our industry is essentially in the rearview mirror. Now, as our new name more clearly expresses, our broader scope and direction are focused on greater alignment among the commercial printing and imaging value chain. This ‘next phase’ must happen in order for all stakeholders to benefit.” said Thayer Long, President, Association for Print Technologies. Following the rebranding initiative is a launch of the association’s new website, www.PrintTechnologies.org, in Spring 2018. The association will also be announcing a series of new and

expanded line-up of programmes and services. The offerings will span areas of research & market data, industry advocacy & standards, events, and communications. In addition, a new staff department named “Community & Industry Development,” has been established to advance programming designed to support businesses throughout the industry value chain, including initiatives that will address workforce development and training. As part of the organisation’s rebranding initiative, the association’s annual event becomes Print®. Now 100% non-profit and vendor-owned, and exclusively produced by the Association for Print Technologies, the event will take place in Chicago, US, from 30 September to 2 October 2018. In 2018, the PRINT® event will expand its focus on exceptional business growth opportunities. APT Indonesia NPES Indonesia will now be called APT Indonesia. As one of APT’s International offices, alongside APT’s India and China branches, will continue

to facilitate and boost exports by the US printing, publishing, and converting industry to the country. “Featuring a base of over 4,000 active printing companies (commercial, publishing, packaging and converters), a population of 250+ million people, and a new democratically elected government, Indonesia presents a market of great opportunity for US products,” said Marco Gandasubrata, Director of APT Indonesia. “We will also continue to work with partners in the industry in sharing the latest technologies to the regional markets. One such example of this partnership is by working with Packaging and Print Innovation Asia, in conducting the yearly Asian Packaging Conference event. This year’s event, themed SHIFT_08, will be taking place in Bangkok, Thailand from 2 to 3 May 2018,” he continued. APT Indonesia will be hosting an industry panel on Day Two of the Asian Packaging Conference event. To find out more, visit: http:// printinnovationasia.net/shift_018.

UV LED or UV lamp? How does the curing of printing inks and varnishes with LED technology actually work? What are the differences between this and systems which use conventional UV technology? When is it worth switching? With more than 40 years of experience in developing UV systems behind them, the experts from IST METZ are able to answer questions like this. UV LED technology is making its way into more and more printing companies. The reasons are obvious: efficient drying, short drying times and brilliant print results - these are just a few of the core characteristics of UV LEDs. In addition, LEDs have a particularly long life and do not produce any ozone. The key difference between highlyreactive LED inks and conventional UV inks are the photoinitiators, which are adapted to wavelengths >350 nm and thus to the emission level of the LED lamps. Other ink components such as binders or pigments are largely comparable with those of other UV inks. "On top of that, the more highly reactive inks do essentially make it possible to save energy", says Stefan Feil, Director of Technical Application development at IST METZ. However, a comparison between a conventional UV system and an LED system would have to take into account that this

system also changes the chemistry of the inks. “An effective comparison needs to be made on the basis of a defined drying outcome, which in turn allows the necessary drying output to be deduced. Stand-by/production times and average print format also need to be taken into account to make the result meaningful", continues Feil. LED product range serves an enormous range of applications IST METZ supplies a complete range of LED products – for sheetfed offset printing this is the newly-developed LUV® type of water-cooled highperformance LED system LEDcure. The system series guarantees optimum coordination to suit the differing requirements of sheet-fed offset presses. A newly-developed optical system with lenses specially designed to meet the requirements of the application in question results in an optimum light yield on the substrate. The systems are available in different

wavelengths, the standard being 385 nm. Water-cooling of the LED chips guarantees a high level of efficiency and system durability. A smart modular basic concept, in combination with an extremely robust and compact design, provides the user with maximum flexibility and versatility. The length of the system can be scaled and also adapted to suit all machine formats and installation situations. This allows an LEDcure unit to be used in a variety of positions on a press. XT8 booster technology means the LUV type of LEDcure also has up to 30 % higher output than conventional LED systems. Other highlights of the new LEDcure include straightforward exchange of the optical system and the possibility of upgrading the LED chips further down the track. Individual benefits of lamp and LED UV lamp systems are used primarily in high-end packaging in the luxury segment, but also for security requirements and for making food packaging. This is a technology which has been established, tried and tested for decades, for which a wide range of inks and varnishes is now available on the market. "It is virtually impossible to make a blanket statement about which technology is suitable for which application", says Stefan Feil. “It is already clear that both technologies boast application-specific individual advantages which need to be considered

when selecting a UV system, which is why advice and consideration of the requirements of the individual case are essential in order to find the right system. MBS LEDcure for narrow-web printing LED technology is increasingly interesting also for narrow-web printing. More and more printers are asking themselves if their company will benefit when changing over the production process to LED technology. If they decide in favour of a UV lamp system, they can rely on a technology which has proved itself for many years. However, they might then miss out on the opportunity of learning about the benefits of LED technology. BUY ONE, TRY ONE - try out LEDcure for free The question whether it is worthwhile for the company to upgrade the production process to the new LED technology can be clarified by the users for themselves during a free test phase. Within the scope of the BUY ONE, TRY ONE concept, IST METZ is giving customers the option of trying out the MBS LEDcure LED solution for free for a month when they purchase a MBS LAMPcure. Based on the Hot Swap concept for narrow-web printing, the user has the option of switching between the two technologies at any time during operation and evaluating their potential applications on an individual basis.

IST METZ equips its UV systems in such a way that they can be switched to operate either with UV lamps or UV LEDs. Integration and electrical supply are identical for both systems; the cassette with the light source simply has to be inserted in the printing press. Perfect integration and optimum handling of MBS The modern and unique design of the MBS is setting new standards in terms of handling. Without touching a single screw, it is possible to access all the relevant components of the UV dryer. The interchangeable cassette makes it quick and easy to switch between LAMPcure and LEDcure. The new generation of the MBS product family also is equipped with the Smart Control system interface. This makes operation of UV systems clear, is easy to use and allows straightforward integration in the control systems of all common kinds of printing press.

In addition to the savings to be made from low-energy production, availability of the printing press can also be improved, which is why the MBS has been specifically designed to reduce press downtime. All servicing work can be performed quickly and easily, saving both time and money. All-round service in the UV Transfer Center Founded in May 2004, the UV Transfer Center (UVTC) at the IST METZ GmbH headquarters in NĂźrtingen advises and looks after both novices and experienced users of UV to help them find the right system for their needs. The central task of the UVTC is to impart UV knowledge and to provide the customers with applicationoriented advice on all issues relating to UV technology.

Is this the ultimate printing machine Manroland is giving packaging and commercial printers alike, more firepower with their latest incarnation of the legendary ROLAND 700, the new ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION Ultima®. Luxury packaging and high-end commercial is a buoyant sector of the printing market. Largely unnaffected by the ravages that other sectors of the market have been subjected to, highend packaging and commercial printers have protected their margins by adding more and more value to their print runs. Manroland has recognised this and developed the Ultima® in response to the changing market demands printers are facing, whether it be higher quality requirements, increased complexity, shorter runs or reduced lead times. Ultima® is aimed at handling all the various coating, printing and foiling processes on high-end packaging and

commercial print runs in a single - and more profitable - pass One-pass production, a buzzword for many high-end commercial and packaging printers, is the predominant theme of the Ultima®. "If a printer can add as many processes

as possible onto the sheet as it goes through the press, it's instantly more profitable than if they leave pallets of half-finished work, or have to put extra handling into a stack just to get it through the next process" says Dr Peter Conrady, Head of Global Sales at Manroland Sheetfed. What exactly is an Ultima® press? At the heart of new Ultima® is the ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION – Manroland’s technically advanced nextgeneration 3B platform. Manroland describes Ultima® as “a press with one or more inline coater or special finishing process”. Ultima® can be elegantly minimal - with simply an in-feed, coater and a delivery - or it can be highly complex with coating, printing, perfecting, foiling and final coating. Whichever configuration, OnePass® is the common factor. Among the new developments incorporated in the Ultima® platform are a newly designed central console with touch-screen control, a new feeder pile transport that cuts down on waste, new suction belt sheet handling technology for a more even pile contour, all-new dampening units, bearings that significantly reduce vibration and, with sophisticated software for practice-

oriented roller washing cycles, even less downtime. The coaters are standard anilox-flexostyle doctor-bladed units, although now inverted – the negative chamber blade sits at the bottom of the unit, which allows gravity to feed the duct’s contents to give the blade a full dose of varnish or coating. Simple yet effective. With the Ultima®, Manroland’s QuickChange® coating mechanism is standard. QuickChange® basically “does what it says on the tin”, says Conrady. “It allows users to swap one grade of coating or varnish for another in less than 10 minutes.” The QuickChange® system couples with a similar QuickChange® wash system that flushes the entire coating unit automatically at the end of a shift, or other user-specifiable interval. Another feature of the Ultima® is the drying units that follow each coater. These can be either conventional hot air, Infrared, UV or LED. Manroland’s InlineFoiler can also be added into the Ultima® coating/ printing agglomeration, giving even more scope for added-value sheets. The InlineFoiler occupies two print units, with the first putting down the printable adhesive required for the cold foil to bond to the sheet and the second unit laying down the foil directly onto the glued sheet via the blanket cylinder.

While the natural position for the InlineFoiler might be considered at the end of the print units, Conrady says it might also sit at the beginning, before the inks are laid down. “If the foiler sits on the first two print units, the foil can then be printed over to create any kind of coloured metallic finish” he points out. And with demand for metallic finishes only likely to increase, in line foiling makes “perfect sense.” Two final ancillaries can also be added: the InlineInspector system and the InlineSorter. These devices

work together to apply a set of userdefinable criteria to “each and every sheet coming into the delivery” says Conrady and will reject any that don’t meet register, colour or other quality criteria. The result of Manroland’s Ultima® development is even more enhanced productivity, print quality and lower production costs - something that Manroland aficionados will instantly recognise from this, the world’s most innovative press builder.

Inventory management and batch tracking via smartphone The Rapida LiveApp with its info panel and maintenance manager functionalities has been on the market for around a year. Moving ahead, it is now to be expanded with the so-called ProductionApp as an indispensable assistant in the production environment.

Storage location with NFC tag The following situation arises at some point in every print company: A necessary consumable such as an antifoaming agent or washing solvent has run out. The stores are empty because a helper on a previous shift took the last bottle or container but neglected to mention this to anyone.

Correcting the quantities of inks in the stores using the ProductionApp The ProductionApp workflow begins in the stores. The storage locations for the various consumables such as inks, coatings, blankets or powder are provided with an NFC tag. Within the app, subsequently, storage location tags can be assigned to any chosen article.

The app then saves these assignments. During an inventory check or after receiving a new consignment, the relevant article data are displayed for an individual storage location. The storeman can then compare

Koenig & Bauer has taken up the challenge of avoiding such annoying circumstances and has developed the ProductionApp as a powerful inventory management and batch tracking tool for use on mobile Android devices. The first practical users are already full of praise for the ProductionApp. Overview of inventory levels The basis for the app is the NFC function which is integrated into many smartphones. Use of this technology renders data acquisition in the production hall both simple and reliable.

the displayed quantities which those actually present. In case of any differences, the numbers can be corrected very simply. The quantities of new incoming supplies are recorded. For any given article, therefore, current stock levels are reconciled and updated automatically (inventory management). This process is realised with the aid of the NFC function. As soon as the smartphone detects a store tag, the display and input forms are opened automatically. The app does not have to be started beforehand. Batch tracking through to the printing press At the press, assignments relate to the point of consumption, e.g. a particular printing unit, and are again controlled by way of NFC tags. The individual locations are assigned via the NFC setup. All relevant information about an article (colour, remaining quantity, etc.) is displayed on the smartphone directly at the place of consumption. The operator selects the quantity which has been topped up or refilled, and scans the batch code of the consumable concerned. The camera is activated automatically to scan the code, and the code itself is then displayed as soon as it is successfully detected. The operator can also view further useful information, e.g. when the article concerned must be refilled

again or how much ink is required for the current job. The quantity refilled and the scanned batch number are saved in a database on a job-by-job basis, and the remaining stock levels are reduced accordingly. If the quantity in stock falls below a defined threshold, a corresponding e-mail is automatically sent to the responsible stores supervisor or to the purchasing department. The e-mail recipient can be set individually for each article. In this way, the necessary reordering process can be automated. An interface to a webshop is possible and also planned for the future. The troublesome monitoring of shop floor stocks and downtimes due to missing consumables become a thing of the past. With the aid of the app, capacities are freed up for meaningful and creative tasks. Benefits of the ProductionApp: - Tracking of consumables batches -Inventory management for consumables -Support for the tasks of the printers and helpers (indication of where something is to be done) -Availability of a list of all consumables which were used in conjunction with a given job

Clear overview of stock levels on a tablet Besides batch tracking for inks, coatings and the like, it is also possible to monitor consumables such as blankets or blades. The app provides exact information on the number of impressions reached by the currently mounted blankets, for example. Targetactual service life comparisons are another possibility. If the blankets have exceeded the planned service life, this can be reported and visualised. In this way, tasks such as blanket changing or the refilling of powder and washing solvents can be indicated and planned in advance. If consumption changes significantly, furthermore, the precise causes can be investigated. Complex processes become child's play The app permits the definition of any number of storage locations, and the stocks at different or distributed storage locations can be summarised. A company thus maintains an exact overview of all stock levels at all times. In addition to the consumables for sheetfed offset presses, further products can also be integrated, e.g. the adhesive for a folder-gluer. Inventory management is greatly simplified with the ProductionApp, because it remembers the order of the shelf areas for each defined storage location. Only three prerequisites must be met in order to use the ProductionApp: One or more Android smartphones with the Rapida ProductionApp, LogoTronic Professional as the production management system, and a wireless network in the print company. Specialised advisers from Koenig & Bauer are on hand to assist processspecific set-up and commissioning.

The batch code is displayed on the smartphone as soon as it is successfully detected

45 amount of white pigment to raise the concentration of the toner. • The automated multi-pass printing automatically overlaps two layers of white without ejecting the paper, providing higher brightness and opacity.

Fuji Xerox launches first White Dry Ink Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Ltd recently released its first white dry ink for the optional fifth print station of Xerox® iGen® 5 150 Press—the company’s flagship model targeting the color production market. The White Dry Ink is available in China and other Asia Pacific markets to provide customers in the graphic communications industry with a wider range of printing applications. The newly launched White Dry Ink can be printed on top of as well as under the cyan-magenta-yellowkey (CMYK) toner layer, which will expand the printing scope in the region. By using the White Dry Ink together with dark-coloured or transparent paper via digital printing, users can now create catalogues, direct mails, postcards, packages and other marketing collateral with a sense of luxury and creativity, thereby increasing the marketing effectiveness and appeal of the printed products. The White Dry Ink will enable

specialty enhancements such as: a snowflake with textured details on a postcard, a book cover with a white horse on a dark stock with vivid hues, or an advertisement with white text that pops on a vinyl window cling. “We are delighted to provide the graphic communications industry with our White Dry Ink, as the addition of this new optional toner will give our customers the flexibility to diversify their existing range of print services,” said Steve Ford, general manager, production sales and marketing, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “This new fifth toner is a product of our commitment to expand the services we offer to our clients in the graphic communications business and their customers, and our investment in research and technology to develop operational-efficient products.” Technologies that support the brightness and opacity of the White Dry Ink • To achieve brightness and opacity in a single-pass print, the company adopted the EA toner which allows the toner size and shape to be uniform and consistent, while increasing the

Key features of the White Dry Ink • The White Dry Ink can be printed on top of the CMYK layer for vivid colour printing on transparent films. • The White Dry Ink can also be printed under the CMYK layer for printing on dark-coloured paper. Automation further improves the product’s operation rate The automation functions – such as the Auto Density Control and Inline Spectrophotometer for making adjustments to colour quality and calibration respectively – adopted from the conventional Xerox® iGen® 4 Press model to help reduce the need for operators to intervene during the printing process. The automation functions also help to maintain the colour quality of printed products automatically and continuously, improving overall operational efficiency for Fuji Xerox’s graphic communications customers. These functions contribute to the product’s print operation rate of 85 percent – the highest among the other models in the same class. The fifth optional toner can be replaced easily by customers without the help of product engineers and technicians, enabling seamless printing operations. The print operation rate of the Xerox® iGen® 5 150 Press has been further enhanced with system improvements to shorten the time required to replace the fifth colour toner by up to seven minutes. It will enable them to discover the new possibilities ECKART effect pigments can offer their various print projects in packaging, branding and marketing. “The illoom.-LookBook is designed to inspire brand owners and designers, giving them a playful impression of the kinds of effects and finishing techniques that can be created using metallic finishes on a wide variety of packaging types,” said Christoph Sontheimer, business development manager, marketing & technical services at ECKART. “From the very first printed samples, it became obvious that the brilliant white Algro Design perfectly displayed our metal effect pigments.” In addition to the sample box, a variety of illoom-fandecks are available, showing metallic and gold effects on different substrates using offset, flexo, gravure, screen and digital printing. Algro Design was also used for the pleasantly soft cover page for the fandecks. An appealing alternative to hot and cold foils Specially selected majestic animal images in the illoom-LookBook create a visual representation of what can be achieved with ECKART metal effects using different printing techniques. Whether in flexo, gravure or offset using UV-curable, solvent-, water-

or oil-based inks – the sample box demonstrates optically striking metal effects as well as an attractive metallic premium design. Breathtaking print effects are shown on 10 effect sheets using the four ECKART pigment types – metalure, platindollar, silverdollar and cornflake. Clearly presented and separated by sheet tabs, the various effects were created to inspire designers as they leaf through the sheets. It clearly demonstrates that Sappi’s SBS paperboard Algro Design is the ideal carrier material to guarantee highest precision, value and consistent quality with these outstanding effect pigments. In addition, print finishing using ECKART metal effects is highly efficient compared with substratespecific effect techniques, such as metallised paper and paperboard, as well as hot and cold foil stamping. In other words, this kind of realistic visualisation presents an effective and cost-effective alternative to hot and cold foil stamping, allowing brands and designers to more cost-efficiently upgrade designs using metal effects. This makes effect pigments an indispensable tool for designers and agencies to set them apart from the competition. Sappi and ECKART are ready: 2,000 sample boxes have been produced and are now being shipped worldwide to educate and inspire the creative and converting communities. www.illoom.eckart.net DIC opens new Solid Compound Technical Center Asia Pacific

DIC has officially opened doors to the Solid Compound Technical Center Asia Pacific. Located in Malaysia, the facility will develop and improve products suitable for the markets in Southeast Asia and South Asia. It will also strengthen its technical service structure in the compound business of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) compounds and resin colorants.
The centre is on the premises of DIC Compounds (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (DCM) and has been in full operation since January 2017. PPS compounds are used in automobile engine peripherals due to their excellent heat and chemical resistance. The use of hybrid cars and electric vehicles is expected to increase dramatically in comparison with conventional cars due to the replacement of metal materials for lightweight cars and the sophistication of the required characteristics through engine downsizing. Market growth in the region is expected to be around 7% per year. In addition, resin colorants are widely used in everyday goods, packaging materials for foodstuffs, and various films. Against the backdrop of improved living standards, the market for daily-use products in the region is expected to grow at an annual rate of around 4%. Prior to the opening of the centre, DCM has mainly been developing and improving its product range in Japan. The new facility will allow DCM to respond to the needs of customers in this region is a timely manner. The centre has newly installed injection molding machines and equipment for property evaluation that are compatible with engineering plastics. This allows the region to consistently deliver product development and improvement, as well as technical services.

48 The Technical Center is the fourth largest compound-related technical center in Japan, China, and Europe. DIC Group is working to deepen demand and expand sales globally through a unified local structure that encompasses production, sales, and technical services on a global basis. In the compound business, which is one of the growth drivers, DIC Group aims to achieve sales of JPY 43billion by 2020. Fuji Xerox rolls out workshops to foster market education The Learning Series for Smart Businesses workshops is a collaboration between Print & Media Association Singapore (PMAS) and Fuji Xerox Singapore. Sha Jumari reports.

The session focused on best practices that designers can adopt to craft collaterals that leverage on the strengths of digital print technology. Some of the topics covered include choosing stock type, setting the best colour profiles and design considerations in the Indesign stage.

The Learning Series for Smart Businesses consists of four half-day workshops that will be spread out over 2018. Co-organised with PMAS, the first session of the year shared best practices, insights, as well as technologies that are associated with brand strategy and design.

For future workshops, prospective parties can register through each event’s website listing, which is expected to go live online a month before the event.

The workshops are part of Fuji Xerox Singapore’s efforts to encourage market education within the print ecosystem. In attendance at the workshop were print service providers and marketers in Singapore.

Leonhard Kurz has developed an environmentally-friendly finishing process for sealing caps made from plastic. The process called CAPtivate Luxury, which was developed for the cosmetics industry, enables a wide variety of surface designs to be transferred in a dry, emission-free and energy-saving manner. This capability also extends to metallic and chrome designs, which can be achieved without electroplating. The recyclability of the plastic parts is retained when using a CAP-tivate Luxury coating. The coating is generally free of poisonous raw materials, and its composition can also be tailored to the environmental requirements of the customer.

Leading the seminar first was Andy Xu, founder and brand strategist for Singaporean agency, Three Collective. The interactive brand experience workshop provided insight to branding strategies and how to define brand identity and purpose. Three Collective is a marketing partner with Fuji Xerox. Part of their upcoming initiatives include rebranding projects for customers of the new Fuji Xerox Iridesse press, iSucess and Khoo Sun Printing. The second part of the seminar was taken over by Fuji Xerox Singapore’s Alex Kwok, innovation specialist, and Kenny Chin, colour analyst. The two experts opened their session presenting on digital print technology and how it can add value to the final print product.

Environmentally-friendly decorating

The environmental friendliness of the decoration can be reflected in the visual look of the plastic lid. The cosmetics manufacturer can choose between a wide variety of nature-oriented designs with a natural appearance that is particularly well suited to natural cosmetics items. In addition to simulating the natural beauty of wood or stone, the process can also be used to create specific tactile sensations. The designs can be combined with partial soft-touch surfaces that appeal to the tactile senses and convey the product characteristics. In general, it is possible to combine different designs. For example, the top of the lid could exhibit subtle marble structures while the side surfaces glimmer in elegant metallic tones. The coatings used in the CAP-tivate Luxury process fulfill the requirements of several national and international regulations, for example EU Packaging Directive 94/62/EC and CONEG (Coalition of Northeastern Governors). Furthermore, Kurz's environmental management system fulfills the stringent requirements of ISO 14001, to which almost all locations of the company are certified. In addition to this, Kurz follows strict internal environmental guidelines that exceed the statutory requirements

50 when manufacturing its coatings. With a view to acting and conducting its business in a sustainable manner, the company has succeeded in generating the energy requirements for its manufacturing plants largely through heat recovery from its air treatment facilities. With these facilities, it is able to achieve emission values up to 85 percent below the statutory requirements. “The Digital Maturity Model for Brand Packaging Esko and MediaBeacon, along with Pantone, X-Rite and AVT released a new white paper, “The Digital Maturity Model for Brand Packaging,” highlighting the levels of digitization within the brand packaging process. Consumer packaged goods companies (CPG) today experience pressures to produce products quickly, forcing them to gain deeper insights into the importance of consumer packaging processes. Senior leadership at many CPGs are adopting digital technologies and implementing digital automation to cultivate packaging as a core business capability. “Brands today realize the benefit of streamlining packaging processes in order to expedite the speed-to-market,” says Esko’s Senior Director, Global Brand Owner Sales John Elworthy. “Our digital maturity model for brand packaging is a tool that brings more clarity to many major CPG companies. Brands can identify their level of maturity within the context of digital capabilities and define a future vision that increases their ability to drive both revenue and efficiencies.” The “Digital Maturity Model for Brand Packaging” defines five levels of maturity: Reactive, Organized, Digitized, Connected, and Intelligent. In the white paper, each of the five stages is clearly described, as well as 14 dimensions that comprise the maturity levels. For each level, there are descriptions of what motivates a business to level-up their capabilities. The five main levels of the maturity model are listed below: REACTIVE: Manual, offline tasks and processes are triggered by external pressures.

ORGANIZED: Tasks are triggered for established stakeholders by defined processes, timelines and physical quality measures using basic computerized tools. DIGITIZED: Projects, tasks and processes are increasingly completed and measured digitally using configured hardware and software. CONNECTED: Packaging software and hardware is continuously integrated with other business processes and systems of record. INTELLIGENT: An integrated ecosystem of full product information

and imagery automatically improves and synchronizes across internal and external interfaces. Tracy Askam, Global Director of Strategic Accounts at MediaBeacon, adds: “While many of the tools discussed in the white paper serve to streamline the packaging industry, marketing departments within the brand organizations also benefit from the tools used – allowing for deeper collaboration and simpler approval processes through digital asset management solutions.” To read more about the model and gain context as to where your business fits, please visit: http://bit.ly/2DZc9yU.
