Intuitive online designer for B2C customers to customise their prints. seen huge growth in the eCommerce segment where many companies are putting less emphasis on the physical retail stores and directing more focus into their online businesses.” “We have also seen online services such as Grabcar and Foodpanda growing so fast that their growth outstrips traditional businesses that may even take generations to build up. Hence it struck me that printing can also be taken online as well since both consumers and businesses will need to order prints some way or another,” he added. After trying out a few web-to-print solutions, Mr Siow upgraded his webto-print platform from RHS Asia. Mr Siow said, “RHS Asia presented the web-to-print software to me, and I find that it is very user-friendly. Its features are also very comprehensive for me to run my online business.”
“For example, the availability of promo codes allows me to run various promotional campaigns. At the same time, the new online designer tool can handle curve words. So rubber stamp designing is now possible.” Mr Siow added, “The software comes with multiple design templates readily available for my customers to choose from, and it creates the additional value for them by giving them the flexibility to design the entire artwork before placing their orders.” “The whole software itself is easy to use from the customer’s perspective, and the stores are easily maintained even though my employees have minimal knowledge in eCommerce.” He continued, “I’m very surprised and pleased that RHS Asia completed my new storefront in just one week.”
The web-to-print software comes complete with B2C and B2B storefronts, and the printer can easily create unlimited products and new templates. For printers who want to deploy B2B storefronts to simplify and automate reordering for their corporate clients or resellers, the software allows the creation of unlimited B2B storefronts. It maximises the value for printers and yet keep investment costs to a minimal. RHS Asia is a leading distributor of print solutions in the printing industry and specialises in providing training, support and consultancy of print ERP & MIS, photobook software and webto-print. With its regional hub based in Singapore, RHS Asia is positioned to provide first hand training and support to printers in South-East Asia.

Agfa Graphics Raises the Bar with Fortuna 11 In February, Agfa Graphics released Fortuna 11 – the latest update of its design and assembly software for high-security printing. Providing a way to skillfully safeguard counterfeit-sensitive documents, this version focuses on enhanced user-friendliness, productivity and creative freedom. “It’s the first step towards a completely revised user experience,” reveals Andy Grant, Global Head of Software at Agfa Graphics. Fortuna in a nutshell Like all preceding versions of the software, Fortuna 11 takes a modular approach to high-security design and printing: users can choose from different modules and features to assemble their product to match their needs. In creating unique designs to protect their sensitive documents – checks, lottery tickets, driver’s licenses, ID cards, tax stamps, passports, birth certificates, diplomas, breeder documents, etc. – they can rely on a potent graphical base editor that reconciles aesthetics with security.
A new interactive user experience Fortuna 11 comes with two new functionalities that enhance interactivity and productivity. One of them – Live Preview – enables users to view changes in their security designs in real time instead of checking it in a separate preview window. It works hand in hand with the new Smart Stepper functionality, which allows users to try out different settings and easily revert to previous ones. “Agfa Graphics is constantly exploring new paths to help customers stay a few steps ahead of counterfeiters,” Andy
Grant comments. “Fortuna 11 focuses on an improved user experience by enabling security designers to create high-security design details in complete symbiosis with all surrounding security elements. And we’ll continue adapting the software to increase design productivity. Also, Agfa Graphics plans to launch new software to further facilitate and automate the production process of qualitative high-security documents.” Boasting over 20 years of experience Building on decades of experience in high-security design and confidentiality, Agfa Graphics also included fixes and other updates in Fortuna 11. The software will now run more smoothly with Wacom tablets and on computers with touch screens, for example. “This version is the first step toward an entirely revised user experience. And we will continue developing Fortuna’s user interface to meet ever-evolving needs,” Andy Grant concludes.

Fuji Xerox launches wide-format monochrome devices Aimed at architecture, engineering and construction industries, the DocuWide 6057/3037 series offers 1.4x faster printing and high print resolution of 1200 dpi. Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Ltd will begin its regional launch of five models of the DocuWide 6057/3037 series, A0 monochrome multifunction devices with enhanced print speeds and resolution. The new series aims to help enhance workflows and output for industries such as architecture, engineering and construction, which require fast, high quality and multi-site printing operations. The series is among Fuji Xerox’s first A0 multifunction devices to adopt the EA-Eco LGK toner – an advanced energy-saving black toner with a matte finish that is gentle to the eyes and yet offers clear visibility.
Combined with faster printing speeds of 1.4 times compared to previous models, and an increased print resolution, from 600 dots per inch (dpi) to 1,200 dpi, users’ work quality is elevated with accurate design reproduction and vibrant output. The feature improvements enhance reproduction of fine lines and circular arcs, which will be advantageous for architectural design printing and design output from various computeraided detection systems frequently used by engineering fields such as production, construction, and facility implementation.
The new series features a secondary Ethernet port that enables shared usage between two different networks, such as an intra company network and a separate network for guest users. Users can securely access the DocuWide 6057/3037 series from their mobile PCs with the option of specifying a device in a different physical location. By enabling secure printing and scanning at external premises, the new wide-format series brings forth a more flexible and efficient manner of working. Colour scanning functions have also been improved. Users can now check scanned images on the control panel, and delete notes and remarks in red ink on design documents while scanning and copying, before storing pre- and post- amended documents for archival purposes. Furthermore, Fuji Xerox’s exclusive Multiple Transmission function allows users to store scanned images in PC folders and simultaneously print them out either on an A0 multifunction device, or an office multifunction device, depending on the print size and colour/monochrome. The series supports not only wideformat roll paper but also cut sheet paper of different sizes—A3, B4, and A4. For easy collection, the paper output tray is at the front of the device. These new features help simplify users’ daily tasks and improve productivity.

Kodak introduces SONORA X Plates The new Sonora X plates can enable up to 80% of offset printers to benefit from Process Free Platemaking KODAK SONORA X Process Free Plate builds on all the advantages of Kodak’s process free technology, while adding significant technology advances that remove the barriers to process free that previously existed for printers that have demanding performance requirements. With longer run length, faster imaging, and more robust handling capabilities than other process free plates, SONORA X Plates can be used for
nearly any application that is typically printed with an unbaked processed plate. Kodak estimates that up to 80% of the offset print market will now be able to go process free, including large commercial sheetfed printers, heatset and coldset web printers, offset packaging printers, and printers using UV and low-energy UV. In addition, the new SONORA X-N Process Free Plate extends the technology to medium and
large newspaper printers. SONORA X Plates can print two to six times longer than KODAK SONORA XP Plates, depending on application, and improved exposure sensitivity ensures that printers can maximize platemaking throughput on even the fastest platesetters on the market.1 A proprietary enhanced anodizing and coating technology increases the robustness of the plate, so it can withstand highly automated or fast-

paced operating environments, where plate durability is crucial. Since Kodak first commercialized its process free technology in 2005 thousands of printers have chosen
to simplify their platemaking with Kodak’s process free plates, eliminating plate chemistry and the burdens of maintaining and running a processor. Over this period, Kodak has continued to enhance the capabilities of its process free plates, rolling out SONORA XP and SONORA NEWS Plates in 2012. Kodak’s leadership with process free technology continues with the SONORA X and SONORA X-N Plates which will become available worldwide in Q2 2018.

In fact, over 75% of our customers print with Lokay because of our strong commitment to sustainability, and SONORA Plates play an important role here. Since converting to process free plates, we have reduced water consumption by more than 30% and have eliminated all chemicals.
“Kodak’s goal is to make printing more sustainable and to make it profitable for all printers by eliminating processing and chemicals from platemaking,” said Brad Kruchten, president, print systems division, Kodak. “
With both economic growth and environmental sustainability determinedly front-of-mind when it comes to printers’ strategic investments, Kodak is forecasting the trend to process free plates to continue and anticipates that 30% of the company’s plate volume will be process free by 2019.

The Impact of Millennials on the Packaging Landscape Personalization, affordability, and connectivity: These are the features millennials demand from packaging. Before we examine what this means for manufacturers and brand owners, let us point out some major characteristics of the generation Y. Packaging personalization jumps on this bandwagon. It is eminently suitable to strengthen the relationship between consumer and brand while satisfying the desire of generation Y to have the most exclusive products at the same time.
Millennials were the first to grow up with digital technologies such as computers, the internet, and mobile phones. Due to their increased familiarity with communications and media, they are also called digital natives. One of the most popular forms of media use by this demographic group is social networking on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.
The digital cosmos is also where they search for detailed information on a product, share pictures of it, and recommend it to their friends. This behavior has to be taken into account during the development of products and their packaging. This is why we gathered 3 ways the generation Y is driving change in the packaging industry.
The Generation Y as Innovation Driver for the Packaging Industry But why this opening? This is perfectly obvious: These influences tracing back to the childhood of millennials today affect how they make purchase decisions – not just because they buy products online more and more. Thanks to excellent targeting opportunities, the first touchpoint between consumers and a product, and thus with its packaging, is online.
Personalization Enhances Loyalty In times of lives increasingly taking place in the public, much if not all is about self-portrayal. So it is no surprise that millennials personally connect to their preferred brands vigorously. Buying a product becomes a commitment. After all, the decision for it is like a statement telling something about who they are and which values they have. To put it in a nutshell: Digital natives are more likely to purchase a product if it makes them feel special.
Affordability as the Winning Formula for Private Labels Although the buying power of generation Y is high, millennials are extremely price-conscious. Of course, they are willing to pay more for highquality products which speak for their socio-economic status. But they also browse the internet to compare prices and look for other labels their favorite companies are offering. When coming in a premium package such high-end private labels can appeal as much to digital natives as popular brands. Connectivity Gets Millennials at their Fingertips Digital natives cannot imagine a world without smart packaging. For them, connectivity plays a vital role. This offers brands a perfect occasion to connect and interact with consumers from the generation Y. For instance, packaging including QR codes gives millennials access to information or a community interested in the same products as they are. It is also a great way to offer, for example, discounts or even tell a whole story of the product. Creating Impactful Packaging Design for Millennials is Key Long story short: If manufacturers and brand owners manage to understand millennials and their motives and transform these into innovative packaging solutions, they are on the right track.

Top 10 Packaging Innovations 2017 Last year was full of innovations in the print and packaging industry. Many new technologies came up and had a big impact on brands and companies. We listed up the top ten packaging innovations of 2017. Last year was full of innovations in the print and packaging industry. From ocean-friendly six-pack rings to gin bottle packaging, which can be used as art deco, they all pushed the boundaries of design, cut costs and helped to save the environment. Here’s a top ten list: Bamboo-plastic Wine Rack This simple and practical wine box was a winner of the innovation award at Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging London 2017. It uses a brand new bamboo-plastic material, which is very biodegradable. Bamboo is also eco-friendly because it grows extremely fast, so you don’t have to cut other trees. Through its multifunctional structure, the packaging of the bottle can be also used as a wine rack to display the bottles. It was designed by Dongguan MingFeng Packaging, one of the biggest packaging companies in China, specialized in high-grade wooden boxes and printing folding boxes for cosmetics and jewelry. Tanqueray’s Art Deco Bottle Cage Gin is celebrating a huge comeback
and all over the world, we see a new gin and long drink trend. Last Christmas, Tanqueray’s one of the most known gin distillers/brands, teamed up with the London-based design agency ButterflyCannon to create a new stylish packaging for their Number 10 bottle. Inspired by the Art Deco movement of the 1920’s in Paris, a small cage was manufactured by Virojanglor Sarl, a French family business, which is highly specialized in prestige packaging. But the design cage is not only stylish, it can also be used to hold fruits like lemons or limes. Perfect for the next cocktail party. Waterless Flowers Uflex from India invented a flower packaging, which can keep flowers fresh for up to 15 hours, without any drop of water. For this innovative idea, they were awarded a double gold medal at the Flexible Packaging Awards. Through a clever technology, FlexFresh is able to keep the flowers off the two main problems of fresh flowers: too much-condensed humidity and too much oxygen. These two leading the flowers to mold and catalyze maturation. To get the best result for
every sort of flower, Uflex uses a PerfoTec software and laser perforation to create micro-perforations in the biodegradable film, suitable for the different flowers. This technology is not only very innovative it also helps to save “millions of gallons” of water from the supply chain. Beyond the Sea-Six-Pack Rings Plastic waste in our oceans is a big problem. More than 100 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year and 10 million of this waste ends up in the sea. So, the craft beer company Saltwater Brewery from Florida has come up with a very innovative idea to tackle this. Using wheat and barley, both byproducts from the brewing process, they created a six-pack ring, which can be smoothly eaten by the sea-life. It is 100 percent biodegradable, compostable and edible. Size Matters – The Slimbox Machine Cutting down on postage costs and packaging waste at the same time? With the Slimbox machine, it is possible to do exactly that. One of the main prob-

26 lems of high delivery charges and too big packaging is, that, although it is mainly calculated by the weight of the product, there is always a lot of wasted “air” in the package. The Slimbox Machine creates a perfectly sized package for whatever to send. Users can connect to the machine via a free app, measure their product, and send the dimensions of the product directly to the machine. It can also cut out holders for products like bottles or use remaining cardboard pieces as an extra filling for fragile goods. Even heavier items are no problem as the machine creates a second box in which the original perfect fits.
Milk Bottles Made from Carton Tetra Pak designed a new liquid packaging: the Tetra Evero Aspetic bottle. It is especially for dairy products and looks like a glass or plastic bottle but is made from the carton. The paperboard used for this is 100 percent from FSC certified forests. The cylindrical body with side panels for easy gripping is also made from recyclable polyethylene. The two materials can easily be
separated from each other to recycle the packaging itself. The unique socalled D-shape of the Ever Aspetic makes it possible for brands to take advantage of a 360 ° printing surface. That’s enough space for much important information and great storytelling. Light Emitting Package You can now bring light to your packaging with this new technology from Saralon GmbH. They invented a group of special inks, which are printed oneover-another to get different electronic devices by using a normal printing machine. The electronic device is then integrated into the packaging. Through this, it is possible to create boxes, which have printed illuminated displays on foil, or paper. These display can even be made on bottles or other glass objects. And the technology is not only very effective, it can also be implemented very easy into every existing production line, by just using the inks from Saral.
The Smuggler Series – McLaren in a Book Inspired by the tradition of the illegal whiskey trade during the 18th and 19th centuries in Scotland, Blue Box Design created a new and unique packaging for McLaren. Many different objects were known to smuggle whiskey undiscovered through the country. One of these famous containers were big, hardback books, with a cavity between the papers. The Design Company created a replica of one of these old books and made it as authentic as possible, including old paper sheets and realistic cutoff. The result is a highly stylish and unique packaging which itself is worth displaying it on the shelf. Biodegradable Cosmetic Packaging The Founders of Sulapac wanted to create a beautiful and sustainable packaging material, inspired by the Finnish forest. Suvi Haimi and Laura Kyllönen invented with Sulapac a fully biode-
NorthBox – Rethinking Insulated Packaging Called The Northbox, this invention of Cascades Inc. is an isothermal container suitable for shipping all temperature-sensitive goods without any problems. The company is a leader in green packaging and sustainable packaging solutions. Their new box is made from fibers, which can easily be recycled multiple times. With this box, it’s easier to send ready-to-ear meal kits, cold-pressed juice or online groceries. The box comes in different sizes and it is even possible to get custom dimensions with a logo and corporate identity.
gradable packaging material made from renewable and sustainable raw materials. It has a low carbon footprint and can be processed just the same way as plastic. Through this, it is the first mass-producible eco-packaging material worldwide. It is especially for luxury products and combines sustainability with a luxurious and clean design. It even has the possibility to be updated with special coatings, just like plastic, to make it resistant to water, oil, and oxygen. Furthermore, they are cooperating with an international team of designers to provide their customers with unique packaging designs.

Close-up insights into Under the motto “Ready for the next step!”, Koenig & Bauer invited trade professionals to its Radebeul facility in the second half of March to learn more about the benefits of rotary die-cutting on the Rapida RDC 106 in packaging, label and commercial production. During the course of each oneday workshop, up to 20 participants were able to test the claims made about the innovative rotary die-cutter for themselves and gained a firsthand impression of its performance capabilities. The Rapida RDC 106 brings printed sheets into final shape both efficiently and precisely, whether labels, business stationery or folding cartons. With production speeds up to 15,000 sheets/hour, makeready savings of 40% and more, and up to 65% higher efficiency, the Rapida RDC 106 is a genuine game-changer compared to traditional flat-bed die-cutters. At the same time, different equipment variants for the individual units enable several processes to be combined on a single pass through the machine: Diecutting/kiss-cutting, hole punching
and extraction, creasing/embossing, stripping – everything is possible. The Rapida RDC 106 is a single machine handling five technologies for three market segments. During the workshops, the visitors witnessed high-speed die-cutting production and fast job changeovers. The demonstrations were tailored to the interests of each group and ranged from pencil boxes and pharmaceutical packaging to banderoles, self-adhesive stickers and a diversity of labels. The two demo machines processed not only 60 µm inmould label films, but also 260 gsm board. Alongside the practical presentations, the workshops offered ample opportunity to explore the technical details of the Rapida RDC 106. Technicians and operators willingly opened guards and covers to allow the visitors a close-up view of the die-cutting units, where they could familiarise themselves with the highprecision adjustments (e.g. setting of the die-cutting pressure in 1 µm steps, separately for each side) and follow the fast forme changing with their own eyes. With its high production speeds, the Rapida RDC 106 is ideal for long runs, but thanks to the fast job changeovers equally economical on short runs. The times in which two die-cutters were necessary to keep pace with the print output from a sheetfed offset press are a thing of the past with the Rapida RDC 106. Early adopters and further prospective users of the rotary die-cutter Rapida RDC 106 are already to be found in

Specialist wallpaper design and print company gets upgrades Custom wallpaper producer, Maggenta, upgrades to a Fujifilm Acuity LED 1600 II, four years after Acuity LED 1600 investment signalled move away from latex Istanbul-based Maggenta, a leading printer of custom-made wallpapers for businesses and individuals around the world, was founded in 2010. The company prints high-quality, emissioncompliant, environmentally-friendly wallpaper using a Fujifilm Acuity LED 1600 II. Having invested in an Acuity LED 1600 in 2014, Maggenta upgraded to the Acuity LED 1600 II in February 2018, boosting production speed by 50% and bringing in added versatility. With this recent investment, Maggenta, once a latex print specialist, has ceased all latex print for wall coverings. “Maggenta is the market leader in the wallpaper printing sector,” says the company’s founding partner, Mehmet Kucuk. “We offer personalised, bespoke products to our customers through our talented design team, who tailor projects based on the specifications required.”
Maggenta’s wallpaper portfolio is impressive, with a vast range of photographic quality prints, ranging from nature to urban sprawl, and oceans to skies. Texture-like wallpapers, depicting wood, fabric, solid colours
and various patterns, also form part of Maggenta’s offering. Its huge range of high-quality products is matched by its stringent business standards: “We use environmentally-

friendly and emission compliant products – this is an important aspect of Maggenta as a brand,” continues Kucuk. “When you consider that printed wallpapers will be part of people’s everyday lives, homes and workplaces, it is vital the ink does not impact the health of our customers or our employees.” “The inks we use are approved by international environmental and human health organisations. As we only ever use products that meet these requirements, we don’t need any additional ventilation systems in our work environment.” Maggenta’s first investment in Fujifilm’s Acuity LED technology came via an exhibition visit in June 2014. Kucuk explains: “We believed back then, as we do now, that customised, tailormade products are the future of the printed wallpaper market. We needed a printer that could help us deliver high-quality print work at a speed that wouldn’t compromise the finish or see it deteriorate over a longer run. We were experiencing all these pitfalls with our latex printers at the time.” “When we saw the Acuity LED 1600 in action, we knew it was the right printer for us and the direction we wanted to take. The availability of clear varnish and white ink, the consistent print quality, the LED curing feature, the flexibility to print on almost all rigid and heat sensitive roll materials – all this, on top of its environmentally-friendly credentials, added up to a package that
offered huge advantages over the latex printers we were using at the time.” Following three-and-a-half years of highly productive, high-quality wallpaper production, Maggenta upgraded its Acuity LED 1600 to an Acuity LED 1600 II, which now produces all of Maggenta’s wallpaper. According to Kucuk, the difference in production and print quality output was clear. “An important aspect of our brand is delivery time – due to high customer demand, we need to ship wallpapers immediately after we print them. The Acuity LED 1600 II’s curing capabilities ensure the wallpaper is dry and free of any deformation to the substrate as it comes out the printer - we can then distribute the products immediately. “The finished quality is excellent. From metre one to metre one hundred, the clarity and density of the colour doesn’t change, ensuring a consistent, sharp, stunning wallpaper. On the whole, the quality of the print and the speed with which it reaches the customer has returned a higher level of satisfaction than before and, ultimately, more business growth. Customers and staff alike have remarked on the flexibility, productivity and high-quality print work produced. “If any organisations are looking to produce fast, continuously highquality print work, then I would certainly recommend Fujifilm’s Acuity LED 1600 II. Any business owner that wants to experience the practical
advantages provided by LED UV printing technology should request a live demonstration – they will see the difference for themselves.” Kucuk is keen to share his experience working with Fujifilm: “Having twice invested in Fujifilm Acuity LED printers, I can honestly say it’s been a pleasure to work with Fujifilm. Their sales, after-sales and technical staff have demonstrated real quality and value and, as a result, our production performance has improved. We look at our work with Fujifilm more as a business partnership than just a vendorcustomer relationship.” Tudor Morgan, Sign & Display Segment Manager at Fujifilm Graphics Systems Europe says: “Maggenta are leaders in their field and require printing solutions that can deliver striking, sharp, and very high quality imagery in an environment that demands reduced emissions and reliable production practices. When they outlined the need for an all-inone print solution that improved on its latex printers, Fujifilm’s Acuity LED 1600 addressed this need, and we’re delighted that with its recent upgrade Maggenta can now benefit from all the additional features of the Acuity LED 1600 II. “We’ve now been working with Maggenta for four years as they’ve created stunning wallpapers for their many customers. We’re excited to see what the future holds for them.”

Manroland launches new packaging press Manroland web systems introduces Varioman, a newly designed packaging printing pres. The offset-gravure hybrid press produces printed films and offers system integration, service- and maintenance packages. The press already has a first customer. The first system will start production for an international packing printer beginning of 2018. The press is designed as a hybrid press with offset and gravure printing units for flexible packaging printing and associated with a life-time service contract that ensures a consistent high performance of the press.
“With the Varioman, we want to provide a new production system to our customers – at the first configuration level for flexible packaging printing,” said Alexander Wassermann, managing director of manroland web systems. “The market asks for press systems that meet the demands for brand differentiation, enhanced comfort and additional packaging sizes. Therefore, we have developed the Varioman.” The press combines the latest technology with high substrate- and production flexibility and process integration. The result: faster, more efficient and cost-reduced packaging printing.
The Varioman is an all-rounder press for packaging printing. It is able to print films and paper with high grammages. The variable sleeve offset printing units are the base in circumference and width. They can be individually designed for printing films and combined with several other components. Thanks to a combination of variable sleeve offset printing units, a corona treatment, EBor UV-drying and gravure printing units with dryers, different films can be printed in high quality and variability. The Varioman also facilitates substrateand production variety. Printable substrates include films or paper from 10 to 300 μm. The product range

cost-per-copy. Compared to the latter, the production costs can be decreased to 25% – depending on each particular job structure. This can be achieved due to the usage of offset printing plates instead of gravure cylinders and a significantly faster job change.
The integrated pre-setting and control systems from manroland web systems considerably reduce waste rates – especially in comparison to press lines without these control systems.
A quick finishing is enabled by a long-lasting drying of the offset ink. Electron Beam Systems help to make photo initiators, as used for UV-colour, redundant. Thus, the printing press can be additionally equipped with UVdrying.
Compared to flexo printing, digital printing or gravure printing solutions, the offset technology reproduces a high printing quality with a huge benefit in
At a later stage, the Varioman c:line will take over the part of carton printing. Its
A main guideline of manroland web systems is the efficient networking of the entire printing room. The Varioman makes no exception here. The proven drive-, operation- and workflow management system PECOM-X integrates the different components from manroland web systems to one systems solution. Thanks to a steady reporting and controlling, the networked production of the packaging press guarantees a faster process – from the packaging design up to printing the product. Varioman customers can benefit from calculable costs and a 24/7 access to the remote maintenance system TeleSupportCenter over the entire lifecycle of the press. Additionally, an easy and comfortable handling for wear- and spare parts delivery is provided at the online shop manroland web STORE.

44 Avner Israeli concludes: “ISA Sign Expo has proven to be very successful for us and we’re extremely excited to return with the landmark launch of the Massivit 1500. We expect that the market’s reaction will be very positive as we expand the accessibility of our trailblazing technology to a wider audience.” Klingele Group invests in the new high board line rotary die‑cutter CorruCUT from Koenig & Bauer
Massivit 1500 Printing Solution to increase accessibility into growing large format 3D printing market Massivit 3D Printing Technologies, the leading provider of large format 3D printing solutions for visual communication applications, has today announced the expansion of its product portfolio with the Massivit 1500 Exploration 3D Printer. This new business-enhancing solution is being debuted at ISA Sign Expo (booth 629) and is designed to enable print businesses of all sizes to target new revenue opportunities. Available immediately, the Massivit 1500 delivers an affordable, print shop friendly solution to enter the world of large format 3D printing. By incorporating 3D printed models or enhancements to existing 2D applications, print providers can expand their product portfolio to offer innovative, head-turning applications. These include, audience-engaging POP / POS displays, illuminated signage and props as well as highendurance molds for cost-effective thermoforming for the retail, advertising, entertainment, events and interior design markets. Based on the company’s unique proprietary Gel Dispensing Printing technology, the Massivit 1500 can quickly produce lightweight, hollow pieces up to 1.45m / 4.8ft high which can be joined together to make any size model or display. Commenting on the launch, Avner Israeli, CEO of Massivit 3D, said: “The Massivit 1500 builds on the
incredible global success of our flagship Massivit 1800 and further cements our position as a frontrunner of innovative solutions for next generation visual communication.” Cost-effective customization Beyond integrating perfectly within an industrial or print shop environment, the Massivit 1800 and 1500 address a growing demand for greater customization in traditional signage and displays. This includes attentiongrabbing channel lettering along with unique soft signage structures. Traditional manufacturing methods often require a lengthy turnaround time, mostly dedicated to manual labor, to produce metal applications and, should iterations be required, this could often escalate the manufacturing costs. With Massivit 3D’s solutions offering geometric freedom, sign businesses can transform standard channel lettering or soft signage into complex structures in a fraction of the time and cost compared to traditional methods.
The focus on growth markets, such as conventional and digital packaging printing, is a key element of the successful Koenig & Bauer strategy. With its decision to re-enter the market for presses dedicated to the processing of corrugated board, the company has now taken the next logical step along this road. The new Koenig & Bauer presses were officially unveiled to the market at the FEFCO Technical Seminar 2017 in Vienna. And just a short time later, the Klingele Group was welcomed on board as a top-class cooperation partner for the high board line rotary die-cutter CorruCUT. “After Koenig & Bauer announced its return to the corrugated market at drupa 2016, we followed the further developments very closely. The branch was simply lacking another potential supplier to the premium segment,” says Dr. Jan Klingele, managing partner of the Klingele Group and president of the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO). Over the past two years, Koenig & Bauer has gathered a strong new team to push ahead development of the press. Koenig & Bauer executive board member Christoph Müller: “We studied the market very carefully and also spoke directly with many of the companies. On this basis, we then sat down to design a press which mirrors the specific needs of the customers as precisely as possible.” Unique features of the CorruCUT The Klingele Group has ordered a six-colour press with a working width of 2,800 mm for its Delmenhorst box plant. The press is in every respect a completely new design – from the feeder, via the printing units and

rotary die-cutter to the delivery. The CorruCUT also incorporates a number of unique features such as a vacuumbelt feeder without infeed shaft, a new solution for anilox roller exchange and an overhead vacuum delivery. Dr. Jan Klingele: “The concept presented by Koenig & Bauer and the many new technical ideas embodied in the press sealed our decision in favour of the CorruCUT. We are now looking forward to accompanying the new rotary die-cutter through to series maturity in cooperation with Koenig & Bauer.” The new CorruCUT will first be set up and tested at the Koenig & Bauer manufacturing plant in Würzburg, and is then scheduled for delivery in early 2019. In addition, the two companies have already concluded an agreement on further presses in the future. Klingele Group: Pairing tradition and progress The Klingele Group was founded in 1920 and current managing partner Dr. Jan Klingele represents the third generation of the owning family. The company is an international supplier with a total of around 2,400 employees. The product range covers corrugated base paper manufactured using recycled waste paper, innovative and sustainable packaging solutions for a diversity of industries and applications, as well as adhesives. Together with affiliated partners, the company’s paper and packaging divisions serve customers through two paper mills, twelve corrugated board plants and eight processing plants in Europa, Africa and Central America. Paper Versus Screen – How Do Our Reading Habits Differ? Habits Differ? Reading a text on a screen is different compared to reading it printed on paper. But how do they differ? Young people generally prefer printed texts to electronic ones. In this blog post we explain why that isn’t at all surprising. For several years there’s been an ongo-
ing debate about reading habits. With globalization fueling the digitalization of most businesses, the time spent reading has largely shifted to screens. Does this mean printed texts are soon to be obsolete? By no means! As Anne Mangen from the University of Stavangersays, we first have to define what we mean referring to reading. If emails, Social Media, and apps count towards that definition, “we can say that we are reading as never before and that the internet has brought about an explosion of reading”, Mangen says. Screens Already Dominate Our Reading Habits Obviously, emails have mostly replaced hand-written and printed letter in terms of units sent and Social Media is where many people spend a lot of their spare time, so the general public is quite used to reading on screens. So, it was no surprise that when e-book readers entered the market a couple of years ago, experts were quick to call them the end of printed books. After digital technology has already quasi-obsoleted CDs in music, DVDs in motion picture, and papers in news, the e-reader was supposed to be the next big thing to shake up an entire industry. But somehow printed book sales have
remained steady despite e-readers popping up all over the market. It seems that most people, especially passionate readers, who purchase books favor the printed version over the digital one. This explains that after a continuous growth at the beginning, e-book sales have leveled at about 10 percent in most countries. There Is Still No Getting Around Printed Texts and That Is a Good Thing But why do people actually prefer printed texts? A book, for instance, is larger, heavier, and harder to grasp than an e-book reader. On top of that, it’s almost impossible to read without sufficient lighting. With all these disadvantages in mind, why would we put ourselves through reading “analog” books and mostly refrain from reading their digital counterparts? It’s not just the nostalgic feeling of holding the book in your own hands. There are quite a few points in which the printed book outmatches the electronic book. As Anne Mangen claims: “The length of the text seems to be the most critical factor.” According to her, a long text that requires more careful reading is widely preferred to the electronic one. Especially among school and college students who often have to take notes, they rather have the text printed on paper even if the same text is available digitally with a note-taking option. In reality, there is only very slight competition between printed and digital texts since both satisfy different needs. For reading longer, more complicated texts, printing on paper is the way to go, but for shorter texts, like articles or Social Media posts, digital seems to be in a favorable position. Nutella Unique: Ferrero Sends a Message With Seven Million Individual Jar Designs The packaging industry is fast moving and lives off progress. While trending colors, materials, and shapes can change almost overnight, there is always room for innovations. All the more important is it for a company to be individual in terms of packaging and make their products stand out. Ferrero’s new packaging campaign under the slogan “Nutella Unique” is the perfect means. By using an algorithm that was developed especially for this campaign, Ferrero produced and sold seven million individual Nutella jars in the company’s home country Italy. Within one month, the colorful jars were sold out and due to the success of the campaign, it was then rolled out in France and now in Germany. Partly responsible for the success are not only the outstanding designs but also a raffle: The winning code gets a Nutella lamp-cap so that the individual jars can be kept and upcycled into a lamp. The idea to create millions of individual Nutella jars came from Ogilvy Italy. Ferrero paired up with the information technology company HP who already facilitated similar projects. In Summer 2017, for example, they collaborated with the South African producer of the cream liqueur, Amarula Cream.
“To raise awareness for endangered African elephants, Amarula Cream […] released 400,000 special edition bottles with individualized elephant icons. That’s a unique label for every remaining elephant.” The idea and the printing technology of this campaign are highly attentiongrabbing, but especially the underlying statement rounds it off. The Technology Behind Ferrero’s Campaign The algorithm that they used for this campaign combined diverse patterns and colors and thus created millions of combinations. The designs were then printed on the label and customized with unique ID codes. The Italian printing company Eurostampa developed a new printing process for Nutella Unique so that as many design combinations as possible could be printed on a single roll of film. By using this technique, they printed 250,000 unique labels per week. This rate could have been up to 10 times faster, had they used traditional labeling printing. Still, the technology is outstanding: Continuing progress in the printing and packaging industries make it possible.
Nutella with a Message The numbers of Ferrero’s campaign exceed comparable campaigns, as they produced seven million individual jars only in Italy. HP developed the software for the production and printing of the individual labels. The exciting design and printing technology provoke mostly positive responses, but that is not the only reason why it is widely discussed. Like Amarula Cream, the company sends a special message with this colorful collection of Nutella jars. The individual jar designs are meant to represent the diversity of people, as the tagline of the campaign suggests: “Nutella Unique – As Unique as You”. Setting New Standards in Image Quality & Productivity

48 run by a single operator.” Fujifilm Graphic System’s National Sales Manager, Ashley Playford says: “Our thanks go out to Stuart and the whole team at Active for entrusting Fujifilm and Inca with their next production growth phase. We are truly excited for Active and can't wait for their customers to experience the quality and speed to market that these two Onset X series systems will offer them."
This will be one of Fujifilm’s largest installations of its type in the Asia-Pacific region and features ABB Robotic Systems automation. These combined systems, to be installed at Active’s Mulgrave site, will be outstanding examples of digital wideformat productivity and, importantly, they are versatile and scalable systems that can grow with business needs, being highly automated with robotics. Active’s Onset X3 is capable of printing commercial-quality up to 900m² per hr and features industry- leading printhead technology from Fujifilm Dimatix, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujifilm Corporation. Both of Active’s Onset devices use the latest Dimatix R-class printheads which fire a standard 14pl ink droplet at billions of times per second. They will also be running the new Inca ‘tear-drop’ feature which allows droplet tuning from 11pl - 17pl, giving Active the capacity to further improve image quality and eliminate the need for additional light ink channels, which dramatically reduces the ink usage per square metre. This combined technology from Fujifilm and Inca Digital will be an impressive combination of quality and speed for the Australian-New Zealand market. The systems are due to be fully operational in early 2018. Active’s second machine is an Onset X1 designed to be future-proof, like all Onset X series, thanks to Inca's scalable architecture. This means that an Inca Onset-X purchased today is designed to grow with businesses into the future with in-field upgrades such
as additional printheads and higher speeds. Both of Active’s X series devices will be running robotic automation, allowing the company to maximise productivity by stacking higher stacks of printed sheets - something that was not previously possible with scissorlift systems. This is of major benefit in terms of machine uptime, as other technologies increase the downtime due to pauses for stack changes. Added to this is the flexibility of being able to place proof-sheets for the operator to check during production, without having to interfere with the palletised job. Active’s General Manager of Operations, Stuart Gittus, comments: “As part of WPP AUNZ, Active is able to provide clients with an end-to-end path to purchase solution, seamlessly delivering one streamlined integration of experts. Because we offer the region’s most comprehensive suite of services from design, production & distribution through to merchandising and warehousing; we needed to look at our present and future needs including, but not limited to, growing volumes and shorter print runs.” He continues: “Extensive due diligence was performed and, in the Inca Onset X series from Fujifilm, we found print speed at high quality will ultimately enable us to become even more competitive in a challenging market, whilst increasing our capacity for speed-to-market. Also, with the degree of automation, both machines can be
Active has two other Fujifilm-supplied grand format printers at Mulgrave; a Uvistar 2 and a Uvistar Pro8 – both 5 metre wide roll-to-roll machines. Gittus says: “When the new Incas arrive, they will be printing a wide range of media including synthetic paper, art paper, screen board, fluted plastic and fluted cardboard for both Australian and global leading retailers and brands. He adds: “Fujifilm has been very proactive and lateral working with us to provide a solution to suit all our needs. Also, the technical information has been invaluable to the decision. It has been a pleasure working with Fujifilm and Inca.” Southern Colour achieves automated, unattended platemaking integrating Fujifilm, Heidelberg and Nela technologies Where platemaking for sheetfed presses is concerned, Melbourne’s Southern Colour, part of Southern Impact Holdings, now has one of the most automated lines in the southern hemisphere. Offset litho plate production can rise to 8,000 sqm or more per month in peak times, so any automation in prepress that enables press-ready plates to keep its hungry Heidelberg machines fed with Fujifilm plates, is sure to deliver positive effects on several levels. There is much industry talk about ‘lights-out’ print production, indicating 100% automation. At Southern Colour the lights are very much on; all colour balanced and providing a bright, pleasant working atmosphere for its 74 employees. For critical colour viewing, booths with various colour temperatures of depending on customer applications.

50 While the Heidelberg XL106-10 colour and XL 106-6 colour with coater operate 24/6 four days a week and 12-hour shifts for the other two days; a constant uninterrupted plate supply is called for to keep up with the presses’ Autoplate changing, on-the-fly register control and piped-in Technotrans/ ToyoInk automatic ink delivery. The entire Prinect workflow is JDF-driven, integrated with Heidelberg’s Business Manager. Nothing is left to chance. Job I.D. information is Data Matrix (QR) coded and tracked throughout the entire production workflow. No human intervention Prepress Manager Allan Gardiner dates the decision to fully automate plate production to the drupa 2016 exhibition. The new XL 106s had been ordered by Managing Director Rod Dawson at drupa 2012. “We happened to see an Auto Pallet Loading device made by German company Graphoteam, on the Heidelberg stand. It was automatically lifting plates from a skid, removing interleaves and feeding them into a Suprasetter CtP device which in turn transported the exposed, punched plates into a Fujifilm lo-chem processor and onwards to Nela bending. What impressed us was the complete absence of human intervention, apart from removing empty pallet skids of plate and placing a fresh one ready for uninterrupted supply. All this was at a rate of 42 B1 plates per hour.” Consultations began with the local Heidelberg team, particularly ANZ Prepress Manager Dierk Wissmann, Nela and Managing Director Richard Timson. A fully automated, datadriven plate line cannot simply be dropped on the floor; the existing workflow needs to be analysed, and a bullet-proof job ticketing system that operates flawlessly both upstream to the MIS and downstream to the presses, tested and implemented. “It’s a purpose-built plate production system unlike any other,” notes Timson. “There are only a handful of similar installations in the world, in places like Switzerland and Austria.” The six-month project has resulted in an integration of technologies that
has also delivered significant environmental benefits in that the Suprasetter 106 is certified CO² neutral and the Fujifilm Superia system delivers savings in five key areas – water, energy, emissions, labour and chemistry. This is achieved with a ZAC lo-chem processor for the Superia LH-PJE positive working plates. The ZAC system intelligently uses a fraction of the chemistry and water of the previous Agfa-based system by accurately sensing developer bath conductivity and pH and injecting only the exact amount of replenisher, rather than a fixed dose every so often. Cleaner, greener, faster “We prefer to see a latent image on the plate and the positive Fujifilm plates provide this for quick recognition. We’ve noticed a reduction in plate processor maintenance and down-time for cleaning and chemistry changes,” says Gardiner. “The Fujifilm ZAC system runs a lot cleaner and therefore requires only routine service calls about every three months. This in turn increases productivity and uptime of the entire system.” He also notes a reduction in plate scratching due to less human intervention. The Graphoteam APL automates slip sheet removal and plates are suction-fed to the Suprasetter. As would be expected, colour is precisely managed throughout production, to both ISO 12647-2 standard
and also extended-gamut custom profiles for specific clients such as the Dulux Group, who awarded Southern Colour the Supplier of the Year trophy for 2017. The colour management in the workflow is all RGB up to the point of in-rip CMYK conversion, via the Prepare Sequence inside Prinect. Colour bars are automatically assigned for the job profile and press, while Prinect’s Calibration Manager also greatly reduces the need for human intervention for measuring and calibrating devices. The main benefit of this fully automated plate line can be seen next to the presses. “Our press operators receive plates on a trolley that are in the correct colour sequence, for the correct press and for the next job shown on their production screen and ready to be queued in the Autoplate loader,” says Gardiner. “If, on a longrun, a plate wears out the printer can easily order a replacement on-screen. The system then knows what plate/s are needed, sends the data to the plate line and within minutes the replacement plate is stacked and ready for loading. If this happens at 2am on a night shift, it’s no problem as there is no need for people to be present in the plateroom.” “Throughout the whole process, the job I.D. is there and constantly updated, such as adding the press operator’s name and time taken on press. This greatly helps with MIS.”
