The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it.

The Future Belongs to the Risk-Takers, and There is a Chance That Might By Thayer Long, President, APTech Not Be You PRINT® 19 PRINT® 19, the print industry’s signature event, is going back to Chicago from October 3-5, 2019. Before you mark it on your calendars, you’ll want to first decide if this is the right place for you, because frankly, it might not be.
technology in print and in our daily lives. He is going to explore questions around how artificial intelligence and robotics will change our devices, the way we work, earn a living, fight wars, and solve problems.
There is no better time to be in the print industry if you are a broadminded risk taker.
Interesting and random at the same time, right? Were you expecting something different?
The truth is, most people like to “think” they are broadminded risk takers while in reality, most of us like to play it safe. The question is, how honest are you with yourself when you look in the mirror? Are you a risk taker in real life, or do you just play one on TV?
In addition, the aforementioned crack education team at APTech has put together the most robust Learning Experience you can imagine. There are more than 80 Learning Experience sessions that range from big-picture trend discussions to practical ones. Our genius sessions will provide relevant and actionable content as well as hands-on labs. Our expectation is that all of these sessions are going to be great, and that should be your expectation also.
PRINT 19 is not going to be all things to all people. And we don’t expect or pretend that it is. It isn’t for the survivalists – those who remember and lament when print/PRINT (and they mean both!) was as large as (fill in the blank). It is not for people who think that an inanimate piece of equipment is going to solve real human problems. It definitely is not for the hordes looking to invade the next vertical only to start another race to the bottom. If that is what you are looking for in a trade show or conference, look elsewhere. Like in any industry, convergence is just a euphemism for commoditization. That industry chapter usually ends the story. So, we intend to write a different chapter because we think the story will go on. PRINT 19 is being built for print entrepreneurs and innovators who are looking beyond the past and the present. It is for those that are looking to be the future. It is designed with care to tempt those who want to construct a better product for print consumers. It is intended to transform print entrepreneurs who are excellent solution providers into creative problem solvers who add real value to their customers. PRINT 19 is going to be a creative forum for attendees who are brave enough to share with one another both successes AND failures. Most business leaders I know have two versions of their story: the one they share with the world and the one they hide from the world. I certainly can identify with that. It’s time we hear the hidden versions because it’s what we, you and me, have done with our struggles that will define our future. So, if this sounds like you, read on. It is admittedly tough to beat Seth Godin as the event keynote from 2018 - but our crack education team of one (thanks Julie S!) did it again! We are super excited to announce that Nicholas Thompson, editor-in-chief of Wired will be our keynote at the PRINT 19 opening event on Thursday, October 3rd. Thompson has one of the most prestigious positions in the world of technology and his talk, The Wired Future: Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Privacy, Social Media, Truth, Tech Companies, and More couldn’t be more future thinking than how we’ll be using
TechWalks, one of the most talked about features of PRINT 18 will be returning. These expert-led, curated exhibit hall tours will highlight a variety of topics of technical interest. I should say “returning and improved” because we’re adding TechTalks to the line-up. These are manufacturer-led sessions about their latest technology breakthroughs. These sessions are geared towards those who want a quick hit of what’s new and relevant, giving attendees the chance to think about things before they meet with the company(ies) of their choice. And of course, we’re returning to Chicago, the heart of deep-dish pizza and the print industry. A whopping 20% of this country’s commercial print-related companies are located within a 200-mile radius of Chicago, and 139 of the industry’s top 400 companies, according to Printing Impressions, hail from the Midwest. Attendance among those 400 companies averages 40% a year. What this means is that most of you will not have to get on a plane or deal with the hassle of the airport to see your friends. And remember, this year’s show opens on Thursday, not Sunday, so no Chicago Bears game traffic or marathons to contend with. Last, and perhaps the most important to you print entrepreneurs, will be the products, services and solutions featured that will help you build your business for the future. That includes presses; software and workflow solutions, post-press/finishing/bindery equipment; substrates, ink/toners, and consumables; mailing and fulfillment; and prepress equipment. We have taken a risk to build something not for the masses but for the difference makers and risk takers. Is it for you? If you think it is, we look forward to seeing you in Chicago October 3-5 While you’re there make sure to find me and let me know what you think. Heidelberg acquires software start-up Crispy Mountain HEI.OS to be developed into a cloud platform for the printing industry As part of its digital transformation, Heidelberg has acquired software startup Crispy Mountain GmbH of Mainz, Germany, which offers Keyline, a cloud-based management platform for print businesses. The aim is to work with Crispy Mountain to expand the Heidelberg "HEI.OS" platform as a new industry platform for the printing industry. Among other things, printing companies will be able to obtain a large number of applications from an App Store. By connecting the existing Heidelberg software solutions around Prinect, the Heidelberg ID and the Heidelberg Assistant, the number of customers is set to grow rapidly. The platform is to be open to all manufacturers in the printing industry. This is intended to give print shops easier access to comprehensive services at the lowest possible administrative
burden. Third-party suppliers will be able to create tailor-made offers for printing companies via the platform. "For Heidelberg, the acquisition of Crispy Mountain is a further step in the rapid expansion of cloud based digital applications that are billed on a usage basis," said Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Member of the Management Board of Lifecycle Solutions and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg. "With Crispy Mountain's qualified team and innovative solutions, we are accelerating our developments around our new industry platform HEI.OS." Keyline has already been launched on the market as a future-oriented management information system (MIS) for the printing industry, designed exclusively for operation in the cloud and for further development towards ecosystems. Using web-based and mobile technologies, the application depicts all
stages of the value chain of digital and offset print businesses. This enables printing companies to calculate and produce significantly faster and more reliably, while reducing costs and minimizing errors. The application is now to be expanded with all necessary functions for the three market segments Commercial, Label and Packaging.

Heidelberg is already gradually converting the sale of individual software licenses to a usage-oriented subscription offering. The company is thus realigning its traditional software business to cloud technology and its usage-oriented value creation. Jßrgen Grimm, Head of Global Software Business at Heidelberg: "This is the first time that Heidelberg has offered its customers all Prinect modules on a subscription basis as Software-as-a-Service since their market launch a year ago and with great success. Crispy Mountain strengthens our team with key competencies in cloud technology and development processes, enabling us not only to deliver an innovative cloud-based and proven MIS application, but also to secure our ambitious business plan on the road to the digital industry platform.

Anlac’s Metallized Label Dazzles The Vietnamese company’s entry won Gold at the Asian Packaging Excellence Awards 2019. Sha Jumari reports. Anlac Labels JSC (Anlac) is a regular in the Asian Packaging Excellence Awards competition. This year, the company won Gold for their entry in Labels Letterpress Process. The company also took home the Bronze in Labels Flexographic Process. The company has participated in the competition 11 times, and has consistently won awards each year. “It is our privilege to win the awards this year, thank you!” said Mr Nguyen Ngoc Minh Thy, director of Anlac
Labels JSC. “It is a real validation to the achievements and strong development of Anlac Labels.” The title of their winning Gold entry is “Colgate Cam Kit 100% 110G”. The label was used for a promotional campaign in Vietnam. Using a Gallus machine, the labels were printed on a metallized box, in order to enhance the eye-catching metallized effect. The client required Anlac to be able to produce the labels within the tight
marketing promotion timelines. Anlac was able to accomplish this with short lead-time production, while still achieving an attractive metallized appearance. In producing the award-winning entry, Anlac faced some challenges. The team had to factor in different substrates used between the white paper proofs and the final metallized labels. Furthermore, Anlac had to figure out how to choose a suitable opaque half-tone for the label in order to create an attractive and harmonious appearance. The team also had to ensure that the final label is identical to the offset-printed box. In 2001, Anlac became one of the first flexography printing companies in Vietnam, having installed a European printer in their site. “As a professional labels solutions provider, Anlac will accompany you to develop unique and effective products,” said Mr Nguyen. “We have worked with leading companies in Vietnam and globally for nearly 20 years.”

Xeikon introduces Panther DuraCure – a unique curing technology Xeikon has applied to patent its Panther DuraCure UV curing technology for use with Xeikon PantherCure UV inks. This unique curing technology takes the Xeikon Panther UV-inkjet series of digital presses to new levels of performance. The Panther DuraCure curing technology is a unique technique achieving optimal gloss effects in all colours, as well as ultimate durability for multiple applications across multiple sectors. Key benefits are consistent curing performance, longterm durability, and the lowest possible energy consumption. Jeroen Van Bauwel, Director Product Management at Xeikon, states: “In response to industry demand, DuraCure is the next step forward in our strategy to provide a portfolio of complementary solutions. Good curing performance is an important factor when looking to invest in UV inkjet printing technology. The quality and durability of DuraCure expands the capabilities of this printing technology and makes it a very attractive opportunity. The new DuraCure technology can achieve optimal
curing for a variety of applications, it combines with our PantherCure UV inks and substrates to achieve the highest quality results and provide added value business opportunities for our customers.” How the curing process works Working with the Panther UV-Inkjet series of digital presses, the Panther DuraCure curing process operates in a number of ways. UV ‘pinning’ of white keeps the ink from spreading and bleeding into the CMYK inks. This ensures that the quality of the CMYK image is kept at the highest level. UV ‘pinning’ after black following CMYK transfer means DuraCure ‘freezes’ all colours across the image and maintains a uniform optimal colour brilliance and gloss. The use of LED curing, with its ability to go deep into the ink layers, combined with HG or mercury curing for lightly but effectively curing the
surface of the UV ink offers the best of both worlds. The intelligent use of these existing technologies is what makes the difference. Combining them in an optimal way to use less energy has a positive impact on the lifetime of the curing lamps. Van Bauwel concludes, “The combination of all these curing steps results in the most durable, sustainable, and effective curing solution on the market today. This is why we have applied to patent our Panther DuraCure curing technology. Xeikon continues to work towards excellence to enhance every facet of its portfolio. With our very long history and substantial knowledge of the digital label printing market and our access to market leading technologies as part of the Flint group, we can provide our customers with the very best products and services.”

ORIS X Gamut awarded “Best Color Management Solution” CGS’ latest colour management software, ORIS X Gamut, has received the European Digital Press (EDP) Award. The software, which was launched just a few months ago, received an EDP award for “Best Color Management Software” in the Software/Color Management Solutions category. “We are very pleased that our latest product won the competition and was recognized as a major contributor to the optimization of printing processes at many companies, together with its outstanding integration within customers’ existing workflows,” said Bernd Rückert, CGS Product Marketing Manager. The award was presented by the EDP Technical Committee. The focus of the judges were innovation, quality, performance and cost effectiveness. No public or outside voting can influence judging. “It’s about technical criteria, not popularity,” said Klaus-Peter Nicolay, president of the EDP Association. “Only then can the EDP Association guarantee that the best products are
chosen and that the performance of the manufacturer in the development of new technologies is recognized.” One of the EDP Association’s goals is to support industry members in their task to find the right solutions for their applications, acting both as an information source and for recommendations for purchase. The jury commented: “Seven-colour (or multi-colour) printing is becoming increasingly popular. ORIS X Gamut is the perfect tool to support both digital and offset printing as well as a hybrid environment”. ORIS X Gamut extends CGS’s product line into fully automatic software making it possible to reproduce special colours on multi-colour conventional and digital presses using an extended, fixed, ink set. This simple and reliable process also produces a richer, saturated, colour image for a more brilliant photo-reproduction for, e.g., photobooks (RGB).
In addition, the converted colour data can be the basis for automatic decision making in the production process, enabling ORIS X Gamut to contribute significantly to workflow optimization and error reduction.

Tube packaging: How to print on lami tube material Historically there are primarily 3 types of tubes used for packing of various liquids, pastes & creams for Oral care, Pharma , Beauty/ Cosmetics , Food products & Industrial products (like paints & adhesives). - Aluminum tubes: still used for aggressive industrial products (adhesives, solvent based paints etc), barrier crucial pharma products & beauty products (like hair colors). - Seamless tubes : Here each tube is individually extruded & printed in the round. They have the advantage of higher possibility of decorative / variation of Caps. But have low barrier properties, hence thicker & with a much higher cost of production. Primarily used for beauty/ cosmetic and some food products. Specially for smaller quantities & low barrier compliant products. Laminated tubes: these have two sub categories: I) ABL (which contains a central Alufoil barrier layer). Alu layer is laminated with
the co-extruded polymer layers. Hence it is more stable due to the Alu layer, but gauge variation can be observed. ii) PBL (This has an EVOH polymer central layer for barrier properties) All layers are polymer & co – extruded. Since it is an all polymer construction, it is more susceptible to heat and tension. But the PRIME advantage is that it can be transparent, which is the demand for Cosmetic & Beauty products, where the packaged product itself needs be seen!
Printing lami tube material in flexo Where as before, 99% of the lami tubes were printed in letterpress because it allowed easier register on the gauge variation material , as all colors are printed around one CI cylinder. But long job change-over time, color change, print quality & much lower speeds of production are the limiting factors. Also most of these presses cannot easily convert PBL material. Due to demands of decoration on tubes increasing & more prevalant use of PBL (transparent) tube material

Nowadays, flexo is the preferred process for printing on lamitubes. Mainly due to : - higher print quality, - quick job changeovers, - ease of use , for value adding decorations (like cold foil & rotary screen) - ability to easily convert PBL material. higher production speeds
in ABL material, due to differential tensions between the 5 laminated/ co extruded layers, specially as Alu layer is the most stable/ inert . This ensures a perfect flat material is fed into the press for printing. PBL material is more sensitive to heat,
Challenges in lamitube printing - 3 things to take into account The printing of laminated tubes, or; lami tubes, can be challenging in in-line, modular flexo presses. Lamitube material has the highest share for toothpaste, food, pharma and cosmetics. The tube material is made of multilayer plastic, and sealed by RF along the seam.
2 - Control the web tension to avoid stretching : Lami tube material tends to stretch during the printing process. In order to avoid the material and the image to stretch during printing, you have to make sure the web tension is lowest possible but enough to have perfect control on the web. The right web tension is essential to print in register. The web transport in the MPS EF press makes it possible to transport the web through the press without stretching, but also without the need for a pre-stretcher in front of the press or any other pre-conditioning of the substrate, if it is distortion free.
To print on lami tube material, there are certain things to take into account. 1 - The layers in lami tube material behave differently. Pre- stretching: Lamitube produced in wider web, when slit or stored for longer periods can develop some wave like distortion on the edges of the slit rolls , more so
3 - Lami tube is heat sensitive : Lami tube material is a very heat-sensitive material. This, you have to take into account both in your web transport (where you need good cooling) but also in your drying. Drying lami tube material is a challenge, which is caused due to differential reaction of differ-

ent layers to heat from UVlamps. UV curing works very well in combination with chill drums, to keep the web at a low temperature. As lami tube material is co-extruded from different layers of plastic, sometimes with a plastic or aluminum barrier, you have to know that these layers have a different density, tension and thickness. When the material goes through the printing press, all the layers (mostly 5) have to stretch in the same way in order to prevent visible differentiations in material thickness. Lami tube in the Indian printing market In India, lami tube is a big part of the printing market. Some Indian companies have a substantial share of the world tube market. There are companies that produce the tube material and also print it, but there are also suppliers that only produce the substrate. Some print the material & send the web abroad to their tubing facilities/ susidiarie companies. Whether printed in letterpress or flexo, lami tube is still a challenging substrate to print! Do you have a question about lami tube printing or another subject? Please don’t hesitate to contact the MPS specialists! Japanese web-to-pack pr Heidelberg Primefire 106 • Kyoshin Paper and Package decision based on outstanding technologies of Primefire 106 • Expanding web-to-pack business to the next level • Heidelberg Primefire 106 enables new business oportunities Kyoshin Paper and Package decided to choose Heidelberg Primefire 106 as their next digital press to expand their web-to-pack business on top of the traditional packaging business by signing a contract of the first Primefire 106 in Japan in April 2019. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will install the digital printing system in Kyoshin Paper and Package´s brandnew Kanto plant in summer this year. Kyoshin Paper and Package was founded in Kobe, Japan in summer
of 1948. Since then, their “challenging spirit” is their beating heat of the company as a successful packaging service provider and currently 290 employees are working with the company. In 2013 the company expanded their packaging business launching webto-pack service called “Hacoplay” focusing on the demand of small size and small quantity with digital presses. They receive an order even from one box in three days as their
shortest delivery time. Currently the maximum size they can print on their digital press is B2 as maximum, but in order to further expand their web-topack business, they were looking for B1 digital press that could meet their demanding customer needs.
Kazuhiro Kajikawa, Executive Managing Director Hacoplay division, Kyoshin Paper and Package is proud to produce with the first Heidelberg Primefire 106 in Japan.
The first time they saw Heidelberg’s Primefire 106 was at drupa 2016 and they were impressed enough to ask Heidelberg to do print test with their challenging images. According to Mr. Kazuhiro Kajikawa, executive managing director of Hacoplay division, “The result of the print test was excellent. The print quality such as green and orange were outstanding

Koenig & Bauer spreads the word on digital transformation and connected services • End-to-end print company workflow in practice • Autonomous printing with AutoRun • Automated job changeovers with FlyingJobChange • Breakout sessions: High-volume commercial printing and label production On 16th and 17th May, Koenig & Bauer invited print professionals from all over the world to an open house spotlighting the potential for digital transformation and data-driven services in commercial printing under the motto “Koenig & Bauer 4.0 – Commercial Printing & Connected Services” (see also Press Release 031/2019).
Dirk Winker, head of print technology at Koenig & Bauer Sheetfed, took the opportunity to present benefits of the LED-UV technology for commercial printers: Constant high print quality, even greater substrate flexibility, fast further processing and – last but not least – an active contribution to environmental protection.
The event began with a print demonstration on a Rapida 76. It was set up to print a job using the LED UV technology and served to show that commercial printing comprises more than just 4-over-4 perfecting.
To keep track of a typically wideranging portfolio of commercial jobs, and to ensure that the right products are printed and ready for delivery at the right time, an end-toend workflow with MIS integration is

30 imperative. Alexander Stern, workflow expert at Koenig & Bauer, explained two concepts from the production perspective: • Standardisation and specialisation on defined products • Unrestricted product variability and creation of a flexible management system to maintain production efficiency irrespective of the complexity Both approaches are practiceproven and represent functioning business models for the future. The Koenig & Bauer workflow visualises the individual processes along the entire value chain. Optimus Dash controls company processes in real time and offers the necessary flexibility – from order tracking and production, via inventory control and sales administration, through to the management of external services, an interface to accounting and much more besides. Benefits to be derived from this comprehensive functionality include perfect communication between all company departments, lean management practices, the identification of optimisation potential and a clear cost focus. Fully automatic workflow A series of typical commercial jobs was defined and sent to a six-colour Rapida 105 PRO with inline coating for production. Key features of this press include a shaftless DriveTronic
feeder, DriveTronic SRW, CleanTronic washing systems and the facility to disengage unused inking units. For the demonstration, the press printed fully autonomously in an AutoRun process, during which the operator simply monitors the preselected printing and makeready processes without the need for manual intervention. In this scenario, the Rapida 105 PRO switches automatically between production and makeready at the end of each job. As soon as the measuring systems signal that the quality is good, production of the next job commences without further intervention. AutoRun thus offers the following benefits: • Fully automatic workflow • Optimum utilisation of simultaneous processes • Shortest possible makeready times between jobs • Minimised start-up waste before starting of the sheet counter The quality assurance systems on the press are important elements of an fully automatic workflow. This means above all the inline measuring system QualiTronic ColorControl, which helps to maintain constant print quality over the whole length of a run. In conjunction with QualiTronic PrintCheck, a parallel sheet inspection can be performed, while QualiTronic PDFCheck additionally compares the printed sheets against the pre-press PDF file. Job-specific reports provide
Thomas Göcke, head of marketing & CRM at Koenig & Bauer Sheetfed, in conversation with moderator Sven Oswald (l), explained the contents of a Performance Report, which presents key production data from the installed presses in clearly structured graphical form
for consistent documentation of the print quality. A traffic-light system informs the printer as to the measured quality. Printing was followed by cutting. Optimus Dash sends a cutting program to the Perfecta 132 cutting line via the JDF workflow, ensuring that this stage, too, is completed reliably and without errors. On the basis of the arising production times, Optimus generates a cost breakdown with just a few mouse clicks. Terminals linked directly to the post-press machines acquire the relevant production data for the MIS. The open house audience was thus able to witness a fully integrated printshop workflow from data input through to the finished product. Breakout sessions: High-volume commercial printing and label production Breakout sessions were devoted specifically to high-volume commercial printing and to label production with corresponding finishing, as well as to more detailed insights into the workings of an MIS.

31 LED-UV production at 18,000 sheets/hr on a Rapida 76: The technology permits immediate further processing of the freshly printed sheets
For the high volume session, production was assigned to two Rapida 106 presses in eight-colour configurations for 4 over-4 perfecting one a conventional press and the other with LED-UV capabilities. On the conventional press, QualiTronic PDFCheck demonstrated three different measuring system functions: Inline colour measurement, sheet inspection and comparison of the printed sheet against a pre-press PDF. New here is the fact that all three functions are realised by a single camera system. When attention turned to the LEDUV press, the visitors could experience at first hand that sheets taken directly from the delivery of the Rapida 106 were already dry and could be passed on for immediate further processing. A diversity of LED-UV jobs was printed without manual intervention by the operator thanks to ErgoTronic AutoRun. As a finale, the highest level of production automation was shown: FlyingJobChange. While one section of the press was in production, makeready for the subsequent job was performed
automatically on the remaining units. After automatic engaging and disengaging of the relevant printing units, production of the new job began with practically no interruption: Job changeover time was effectively reduced to zero.
During the other breakout session, the visitors first saw printing and inline finishing on the half-format Rapida 75 PRO. The chosen job demonstrated eye-catching drip-off effects. A sixcolour Rapida 106 with cold foil module, coater and RS 106 reel-tosheet feeder subsequently produced labels at speeds up to 20,000 sheets/ hr. All the jobs were followed up with live die-cutting on the Rapida RDC 106. This provided evident proof of the many advantages of a rotary process, including fast makeready even with varying sheet formats, fast job changeovers, exceptional substrate flexibility and high production speeds, all paired with a simple operating concept. The printed sheets were subsequently passed to a Perfecta 132 cutting line. This processing step was similarly integrated into the JDF workflow.

Enhance your Ink Fountain with our latest generation ServiceKit Increases press performance and reliability. Preserves production quality.
- All components for the Ink Fountain are new
The ink fountain is an important feature in any offset printing press. Designed and manufactured to the highest specification and precision, Manroland’s ink fountain enables the highest level of press performance to be achieved. To guarantee operational performance it is important this precision is maintained until the end of the machine's life cycle. Worn parts in the ink fountain prevent the ink from flowing cleanly. They also affect it’s ability to respond quickly and accurately to ink slide commands. Ink slide drives are constantly in motion and daily use gradually causes wear on moving parts. The ink slide tips consequently wear out and become dull which results in microscopic material breakouts causing ink flow fluctuations. The solution: Manroland Ink Fountain ServiceKit Consider the advantages: New ink slide drives allow precise control of the ink slide tips. New sharp ink slide tips ensure even color flow.
The machine responds faster to colour control commands, making it faster to achieve good colour, reducing waste and maintaining high performance. What PrintServices can offer: - Delivery of a complete Ink Fountain assembly

3D printing continues to be one of the highlights at drupa 2020 Since drupa 2016, 3D printing has been one of the six highlights in the trade show program. In addition to its own exhibition area, drupa 2020 will once again dedicate a touchpoint 3D fab+print to this future technology. For the first time, the VDMA Additive Manufacturing Association will be responsible for the content design and implementation of the ten-day lecture programme. A total of 80 specialist lectures are planned, which will be spread over two two-hour blocks every day.
With a view to the trade fair’s target group, the focus will be on applications in printing and paper machine construction as well as applications for media and packaging. The spectrum will range from additivemanufactured machine components to prototyping or on-demand spare parts supply for printing presses to the use of additive processes to manufacture individual advertising products and unusual packaging solutions. "Since our trade fair appearance at drupa 2016 met with a very positive response, it made sense to expand
our commitment at drupa 2020 and contribute our know-how," explained Dr. Markus Heering, managing director of the VDMA Additive Manufacturing Association and also the VDMA Printing and Paper Technology Association. "Many of our members have been pioneers in industrial 3D printing for many years. They bring with them concentrated practical and theoretical know-how that we want to show visitors at touchpoint 3D fab+print," said Heering. Variety of applications from press construction to packaging "It is important for us to pick up the drupa visitors where they are in additive manufacturing," said Rainer Gebhardt, project leader of the working group and will be responsible for the content planning of the conference. For this reason, both introductory lectures on technical processes within
additive process chains and insights into current and future applications in the printing, packaging and media industries are planned. "Additive design and manufacturing create scope for creativity in many industries. From this point of view, the technology also fits in perfectly with the drupa," said Gebhardt. Thanks to its broad membership spectrum, which includes traditional drupa exhibitors, users from many other industries and leading international researchers, the working group is able to offer the highest thematic diversity under its own steam. Gebhardt is also inviting drupa exhibitors to address the working group with their own lecture topics: "We are open to suggestions and will find opportunities in the ten-day program to provide a forum for AM applications from the traditional print and packaging industry."

Pack Print International and packaging’s megatr Organised by Messe Düsseldorf Asia, the 7th edition of Pack Print International (PPi) will take place from 18-21 September 2019 at BITEC, Bangkok. The event is a tripartite collaboration with the Thai Packaging Association and Thai Printing Association. In 2018, Thailand’s printing and packaging industries registered over 300 billion Baht, of which 40% came from the printing industry and 60% from packaging. According to PPi, positive outlooks this year will be led by three supporting growth industries – Food and Beverage, Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics, and e-Commerce. Beattrice J. Ho, project director of PPi 2019, Messe Düsseldorf Asia, stated that these megatrends have created a considerable amount of industrial value, as printing and packaging capabilities are integral to a diverse mix of application industries. In tandem with global shifts and movements, these macro-level factors supporting printing and packaging businesses are: 1. Digital packaging: According to Smithers Pira, the rapidly expanding digital (inkjet and toner) packaging market will grow by almost 13% annually to exceed US$22.0 billion by 2022. Very strong growth will be seen in corrugated, carton, flexibles and directto-shape, with developments in metal
printing. This is especially since digital print platforms are opening up a whole world of possibilities for boosting emotional engagement with a consumer and creating new revenue streams. 2. Print technology investment: taking cue from the 6th drupa global trends report released in April 2019, the leading print technology investment plans by market in 2019 are: Commercial (digital toner cutsheet colour: 29%, digital inkjet wide format – cutsheet and rolled: 19%), Packaging (sheetfed offset: 27%, Flexo: 25%), Functional (digital toner cutsheet colour: 27%, digital inkjet wide format – cutsheet and rolled: 23%) and Publishing (digital toner cutsheet colour: 30%, sheetfed offset: 29%). In gist, print can be optimistic about the future, where printers and suppliers can look to new ways to exploit emerging technologies so as to place print as a central tool for consumers. 3. Technologies and innovations that create industrial value: One such instance is the shift to meet increasing demands for personalisation and customisation.
Manufacturers and printers of all types are creating solutions that make this growing market possible, namely faster, higher quality, more affordable digital printing technology. Last year was a tipping point for the packaging industry. Narrow-web digital presses exceeded the standard flexo presses for the first time. 2018 was the first year digital presses emerged the packaging industry’s leading choice. A marketing research study by LPC, Inc. into the label-making segment found digital presses grew by 11.9 percent in 2017 – proof of a major trend change in the packaging industry. Led by modernism and changes in consumer behavior focused on personalisation, convenience and smart packaging, and the advent of online sales, a bright spot comes in the form of the print packaging market which is on a steady growth to reach US$286 billion in 2020. In Asia-Pacific, the market is currently the largest regional print packaging market, accounting for over 42% of revenues, and is expected to become the second fastest- growing region through to 2020. This bodes well with the trend in Asia – where it would represent over 40% of global packaging demand come 2022.

l 2019 to highlight print rends Ms Ho’s projected outlook was echoed by Mr Manit Kamolsuwan, President of The Thai Packaging Association and Mr Phongthira Pattanapiradej, President of The Thai Printing Association. According to Mr Manit, Thailand’s packaging industry had a domestic production capacity of 5.83 million tons in 2018. In terms of raw materials used, the highest growth was observed in paper (37.74 percent), followed by glass (30.05 percent), plastic (24.34 percent), and metal (7.87 percent). It is also expected that the industry would continue its upward cycle in light of governmental policies to stimulate investment. In response to the national policy of promoting Thailand as a manufacturing centre, he also added that Thailand’s Food & Beverages sector remains the key growth driver for the packaging industry and is buoyed by export demand and easy access to raw materials. Coupled with active and smart packaging as innovative solutions to preserve food quality and to extend the shelf life of food, alongside the Thai government’s series of national standards relating to food packaging and labelling, are all designed to meet international standards. Commenting on how availability of innovation and technology would up the competitiveness of the Thai packaging industry on an international level, Mr Manit said, “Over the next decade, the packaging industry will witness a significant revolution as the applications of digital printing increases. Therefore, it is important for local businesses to align themselves with the global digital
packaging printing market – in coming out with attractive, cost-efficient and sustainable products for an increasingly crowded and competitive marketplace”. Conversely, the Printing industry in Thailand is worth more than US$3.7 billion today, with the paper packaging industry alone exceeding US$5.7 billion according to Mr Phongthira. This trend will continue to grow on the back of Thailand’s attractiveness as a printingproducts investment location as its surrounding region forms the ASEAN Economic Community, a single market of some 600 million consumers. Demand for package printing is also expected to increase as both domestic and export markets for products of all types, particularly processed food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, and e-commerce will expand. Supporting this demand are Thailand’s excellent manufacturing facilities such as the 144-hectare Sinsakhon Printing City and Industrial Estate. When asked about opportunities for growth and investment in the paper and printing industry in Thailand, Mr Phongthira encouraged businesses to look towards, “high-quality, high-fidelity printing, hybrid printing, automation processes and ‘smart factory’ set-up in line with “Packaging 4.0”, as well as customisation in digital printing and environmentally friendly, affordable packaging”. He added that this is in light of favourable factors that make Thailand an ideal base for operations including the country’s high-volume pulp production and supply of paper,
enhanced infrastructure in the form of Sinsakhon Printing City, workforce availability and strong government support; including tax and non-tax incentives for projects that meet national development objectives by the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI). An exhibition for the industry, by the industry With its 2019 theme, Shaping the future of packaging and printing in Asia, the exhibition driven by sectors’ leading trade fairs drupa and interpack by the Messe Düsseldorf Group in Germany, will see global packaging and printing innovations put up by over 300 leading companies from 25 countries, including national groups from Germany, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, China and Singapore. Roland TrueVIS VG2 passes customer testing with flying colours “And finally, real orange!” The Dutch sign specialist Gielen Reclame (Valkenswaard) is incredibly enthusiastic about the successful beta test of the new 8-colour TrueVIS VG2 printer/cutter from Roland. So happy, in fact, that Chris Gielen immediately purchased two machines: “The addition of the new orange ink now provides us with the opportunity to make even better prints with certain corporate identity colours.” Gielen Reclame, along with a sign maker in Denmark and Renault F1® Team, is one of the three European companies that have subjected the new generation TrueVIS from Roland DG to extensive practical testing. The Dutch company has a great deal of experience with Roland devices - there were already six Roland printers in the production hall, and with the investment in two TrueVIS VG2 devices there are now eight - and was therefore the ideal customer to push the boundaries of this new printer. New generation The TrueVIS VG2 is the latest generation printer/cutter from Roland DG. "In its development, we were able to build on more than 30 years of knowledge and experience with 16
previous generations of products in the print & cut market segment that is so important to us," says Karel Sannen, Marketing Manager at Roland DG, Benelux. “We have introduced more than 40 new and improved functions and features - in the hardware, but also in the software and the ink, including orange ink for an even wider colour gamut. Together, these improvements ensure even better performance than previous generations. I am convinced that the TrueVIS VG2 truly sets the new standard in large format printing solutions. And that's why I am happy that our beta test customers endorse that view as well.”
Even better corporate identity colours The TrueVIS VG2, introduced in March, is available in various ink configurations, including CMYK x 2 and CMYKLcLmLk with orange or white in the eighth colour channel. Chris Gielen, owner of Gielen Reclame, opted for orange as the eighth colour because he already has white ink on another Roland system: “We do a lot of printing for motor sport companies, and you can get great effects with a different type of foil, for example metallic, with white ink. On the other hand, the orange ink now offers us the option of making even better prints of difficult corporate colours. I come from the commercial printing world. With four-colour printing, we always had problems when there was orange in a corporate design; it often came out brown-ish when produced with fourcolour process printing, irrespective of what the Pantone colour guide you placed next to it showed. Or you had

to work with an additional PMS spot colour. Four-colour inkjet can have the same problem, but Roland has now solved this with its new orange TR2 ink.” Karel Sannen adds: “The software includes features such as an Orange Colour System Library that help users to reproduce brand colours quickly and accurately. Users can choose a specific colour of orange ink, such as Pantone 021; or opt for a fresh colour that gives you bright green and deep blue. You can easily print amazing colours that truly pop with the new TR2 inks and our True Rich Colour setting.” Unprecedented colour strength In addition to unprecedented colour strength, the TrueVIS TR2 inks feature improved scratch resistance, Sannen explains. “In recent years, other manufacturers have started marketing new technologies such as latex and UV inks. However, like many professionals in our industry, we remain convinced that flexible materials such as PVC and our TrueVIS inks are the perfect combination. The new TR2 inks, including orange, support the widest array of applications and ensure the most long-lasting results: TR2 inks retain their colour even after three years of outdoor use. With these new TR2 inks you can laminate your printed film after six hours and then apply it immediately, compared to 24 hours or more of wait time with other inks. Moreover, we have received an ICS
guarantee from Avery Dennison, and 3M has twice issued MCS certifications for our colour configurations.” Optimal productivity The TrueVIS VG2 hardware has also been improved in several ways. Sannen explains how that benefits customer productivity: “The machine’s start-up procedure has been shortened, and the cleaning cycle has been minimised. This saves time and ink.” Should a nozzle fail during production, the Nozzle Mask function will switch off that part of the print head: “Printing can then continue at half speed until repairs can be made. Downtime and associated loss of productivity is therefore prevented.” Moreover, the TrueVIS VG2 is equipped with the latest automatic pinch roller technology, whereby the middle pinch rollers are lifted when the cutting of a job commences: “This means that with a print-and-cut task, you no longer have to wait until the ink is completely dry before cutting.” The roll-up unit for the print media has also been improved, so that the printed substrate can be rolled up more evenly and with more stability. Gielen has also noticed the improvements, such as the new "Multiple Crop Marks" feature: “The TrueVIS VG2 cutter is unbelievably accurate. We normally apply some overlap around the logos to be cut, to counter any imprecisions so that we do not get any white edges. But that is not really necessary with this system. In
principle, we could cut without overlap, that's how precise this machine is.” Sannen explains how the VG2 achieves that: “In addition to the option of setting four register marks per print job, you can also define crop marks at line level. There is even a third option: printing register marks per object to be cut. This allows the machine to calibrate more often, resulting in unprecedented accuracy in contour cutting.” Amazing quality even in Standard mode Chris Gielen mentions another interesting advantage of the new Roland TrueVIS VG2: “We always print in high quality mode. That is how we came through the recent financial crisis. Our motto is: Do not use cheaper materials or inks, but adhere to quality. Paying attention to your customers and their desire for the utmost in quality yields more than cutting back on materials ever would . However, at Roland's recommendation, we have also started using the VG2 in the standard mode at 900x600 dpi. We are positively surprised at the visible print quality, even in standard mode. There are, of course, critical colours to which this approach does not apply; but in 90 percent of the cases, you can do perfect work on the VG2 just using the standard setting.” Convinced by the performance of the TrueVIS VG2 during the beta period, Gielen immediately purchased two units of the new machine when it became commercially available.

CAREER PLANNING Having a career plan is important. It can help you manage the direction you want your career to take, the job skills and knowledge you will need, and how you can get them. A great career plan relies on strong foundations. The form of your career plan will depend on the kind of person you are. It may be very structured, or you may just need a few notes in each area such as knowledge, skills and qualities, what you like doing and the type of jobs that interest you. Pick a career you actually like -most career problems stem from the fact that we are terrible at picking jobs. But also keep in mind what you're good at. Maybe you don't feel that passionate about any specific career—or you love multiple areas and can't decide on just one. Then it's time to think about your personality and focus on the skills you have. Well, you say, what if you don't know what you're good at or even what you're interested in? Career assessment tests can help narrow down a field. Consider what is important to you. We all have different values, needs and motivations. Our work takes up a significant part of our day - usually a third or more - and has a significant impact on other aspects of our life, including our sense of self-worth and wellbeing. This is why it is very important to carefully consider your values and needs when planning your career direction and developing your career plan. It is important to understand your skills, knowledge and personal qualities so you can match them to jobs you would like to do. This will also help you identify the knowledge and skills you might need
to acquire, or the personal qualities you might need, to achieve your career goals. An accurate and realistic assessment of these things is vital to an achievable career plan. Do you think you will need to undertake further study? What steps could you take to do this? Do you feel in charge of your own career direction? If not, how can you gain more confidence and take charge? When preparing your career plan action plan, include what you will do and how you will do it. Make a list of people whose help you will seek and draw up a time plan of when you will do each action. The timeframe should be at least 12 months; however, a longer period may be appropriate. Review and adjust your plan -career planning is a way of making the best use of your current

50 situation and foreseeable opportunities. Given that unpredictable events and changes can occur over time, view your plan as a guide and allow space for adjustments and changes to your approach. Draw on your experiences at work to help you achieve your goals. You will generally find it helpful to revisit your plan each year.

Remember, the career plan you put in place at one stage of your life may not be relevant once you have achieved certain goals and experienced other job and life events. Revisiting your plan will help to reinforce and clarify your thinking, and can help you decide if you need to change your career plan, seek help or advice or put more effort into achieving your goals. Think about what excites and energizes you -we all want to enjoy and actually like our careers. Perhaps the biggest sign you're on the wrong path is if you dread talking about your job. While passion

56 Final at FESPA Global Print Expo 2019, which took place from 14 to 17 May at Messe Munich in Germany. The World Wrap Masters competition, sponsored by Hexis, Mimaki, Wrap Gear and Car Wrapper 3D, ran throughout the year and concluded with two competitions: Wrap Masters Europe and the World Wrap Masters Series Final.
Together with its internal liquidity, the syndicated long-term credit facilities give Koenig & Bauer a strong and stable financial basis. The equity ratio stood at 37.5% at the end of March 2019. Guidance for 2019 CFO Mathias Dähn: “The order backlog, which rose to €656.6m as of 31 March 2019, gives us good forward visibility through to autumn 2019 and, in security printing with its good order situation, until 2020. With contract signings exceeding our expectations and reaching a figure in the mid double-digit millions of euros, the Print China trade fair held in midApril was very successful. On the strength of the good order and project situation ensuring full capacity utilisation across the entire group as well as the further progress made in our group projects for boosting earnings by €70m compared to 2016, we are confident to achieve organic growth of around 4% in revenue and an EBIT margin of around 6% in 2019 in the group. We are attaching particularly high priority to our growth offensive 2023, the cumulative costs of which we expect to reach around €50m for 2019 to 2021, with a heavier load in the first year. The resulting margin impact is already included in our 2019 earnings target.” Mid-term targets until 2023 CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann: “With our growth offensive 2023, we want to actively exploit the currently available market opportunities in the cardboard, corrugated board, flexible packaging, 2-piece can, marking and coding, glass direct and decor printing as well
as in postpress to achieve sustained profitable growth. The impact of volatile security printing will be reduced by higher packaging share of group revenue. For web offset presses for newspaper and commercial printing, we expect a further decline particularly in service business. With all our initiatives and projects, we are targeting to increase group revenue to around €1.5bn with an EBIT margin of between 7 % and 10% until 2023. All three segments are to contribute to the growth in revenue and earnings. Our further targets include a dividend ratio of 15 - 35% of group net profit, an equity ratio of over 45%, a target corridor for net working capital of 20 - 25% of revenue, and a share of 30% in total revenue for service business.” The World Wrap Masters competition winner Triain Moldovan from Austria has won FESPA’s World Wrap Masters Series
Wrap Masters Europe took place on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 May, when 30 competitors from 12 countries battled it out for a place in the Series Final. After an adrenalin fuelled two days, Casper Madsen from CWRAP//Colors in Denmark took the title of European Wrap Master, with Triain Moldovan from TM Wraps in Austria and Giovanni Rosas Linares from TopCar Performance in Mexico taking second and third place respectively. On the last two days (Thursday 16 and Friday 17 May) Casper, Triain and Giovanni went on to compete against the winners of previous World Wrap Masters events: Wrap Masters Asia, Mexico and Eurasia, Speedwrap at FESPA Africa and Cambea at FESPA Brasil, as well as national wrap events in Denmark and Finland. The finalists were challenged with wrapping VW Golf cars and mannequins. After an intense two day competition, Triain Moldovan, runner-up of Wrap Masters Europe was crowned World Wrap Masters Champion. Second and third places went to Norman Brübachj from Germany and Sweden’s Jonas Sjöström respectively.

The absolute best way to make flexographic printing a CLEANER technology Asahi Photoproducts, a pioneer in flexographic photopolymer plate development, today reported it will be again exhibiting at Labelexpo Europe, scheduled for 24 to 27 September
Not only does it eliminate the need for volatile solvents in the platemaking process, speed up the process to consume less energy and deliver the same high quality and press productivity (OEE) our customers have come to expect, but the technology reduces makeready times and waste as well as the amount of time the press needs to run. All of these benefits add up to a much cleaner platemaking and flexographic printing process than can be achieved with any other plates on the market.” At Labelexpo, Asahi will be featuring its popular AWP™-DEW waterwashable plates, the first to use CleanPrint™ technology. “Our plan is to migrate this technology to other plates in our portfolio over time,” Niederstadt adds, “to ensure

59 three Muller Martini saddle stitchers – Primera, Prima Amrys and Bravo-T – is connected with the company’s proprietary MIS system called AIS (Akebono Information System) via the Connex.Info 4.0 workflow system. Connex.Info 4.0 provides the bookbindery with valuable data about real-time production and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). The AIS is also connected to the MIS of Dai-ichi Printing, enabling the parent company and therefore the printing plant to also view the Connex.Info data.
our customers can print CLEAN on the widest array of substrates in the market.” Benefits of Asahi CleanPrint™ Asahi CleanPrint™ is designed to facilitate kiss touch printing pressure. Lighter printing pressure ensures constant repeatability of printing quality during the production run as well as longer plate life. This characteristic is achieved with unique Asahi-engineered photopolymer chemistry that reduces the surface energy of the printing plate and enables better ink transfer to the substrate during printing. CleanPrint™ has the beneficial effect of reducing ink filling-in the mid-tone area during the printing run, leading to fewer cleaning intervals and less press downtime for a highly sustainable
flexographic printing process. Niederstadt notes, “Our customers are ecstatic about the quality of print they can deliver while also achieving as much as 50% less makeready time and 30% or more improvement in OEE.” For more information about CleanPrint™ and other flexographic solutions from Asahi Photoproducts, visit www.asahi-photoproducts.com. Successful Open House at Akebono in Niigata (Japan) Over 30 visitors took advantage of the opportunity to learn at first-hand about the numerous advantages of the Alegro MC perfect binder during the open house event at Japanese Muller Martini customer Akebono, which is based in Niigata and belongs to the major Dai-ichi Printing Group. During a live production run, Hiroyuki Gemma, President of Akebono, referred to the numerous benefits of the Alegro MC, which, like the
Make-ready times have been shortened ten-fold at best compared to use of the earlier perfect binder model, and productivity has risen by a factor of 4. “What’s more, thanks to easier operation using the Book Data Center and Line Control, we need 20 percent less staff,” noted Hiroyuki Gemma. The rate of production waste has fallen to 0.8 percent, while the quality of the end products bound using PUR has risen. “And thanks to MMRemote, we have fast support from Muller Martini,” says Hiroyuki Gemma. In addition to the machine demo, the visitors to the open house also benefited from an interesting talk by Volker Leonhardt, Global Sales and Marketing. Member of Muller Martini Corporate Management He spoke about the challenges and facets of the global book market and presented the wide-ranging (Finishing 4.0) solutions that Muller Martini offers for the production of books.
