Water Instead of Ink: Is this the Future of Printing Our digitalized world gives us the opportunity to save money and resources by organizing tasks on a computer. But according to a study carried out by the German Ministry of Environment Germans use about 250 kg paper per year and capita.
A Chinese team of scientists has now developed a smart and resourceefficient alternative: Rewritable paper that can be printed on with water instead of ink. Our digitalized world gives us the opportunity to save money and
resources by organizing tasks on a computer. But according to a study carried out by the German Ministry of Environment Germans use about 250 kg paper per year and capita. Especially in offices the paper waste is enormous: More than 10.000 sheets are printed each year. Mostly they end up in the bin after being read once. A Chinese team of scientists has now developed a smart and resource-efficient alternative: Rewritable paper that can be printed on with water instead of ink.
Sean Zhan, professor at the Jilin University in China invented the new printing technology. “The greatest problems of our time are the energy crisis, global warming, and of course the destruction of our environment. Excessive paper consumption is directly connected to that”, says Zhang. In order to counteract the waste of paper the scientist and his team found a practical solution. Water ink can be used on any inkjet The result of their research is intelligent printing paper that is coated with invisible ink. When the paper comes in contact with water the ink becomes visible and lasts for about 20 hours. After that it disappears and the paper can be used again. Thus one sheet of the innovative paper can be re-used up to 50 times. Especially handy is that a new printer is not needed since water works with normal inkjet printers. This leads to a cost saving of 99 per cent in comparison to printing with regular ink. The concept of reusable paper is not new: Many attempts have been made to reduce the usage of paper in the past. But until now the solutions were either very expensive or toxic substances were needed. Sean Zhan’s approach for the first time combines economic with ecologic aspects. “From our point of view we paved the way for sustainable printing processes”, the Chinese team of scientists sums up their invention. The future will show whether the water printer takes root in our offices.

Premium packaging to driv According to new report on global digital print market for packaging, a shift from labels to other forms of packaging will be driven by a demand for premium packaging. Research and Markets announced the addition of a report projecting on the global digital printing market for packaging from 2017 to 2021. Analysts forecast the market to grow at a CAGR of 10.58% during this period.
The report stipulates that the latest trend gaining momentum in the digital printing market is a shift from labels to other packaging types. This is evident from the reduction in market shares and the low growth rate of labels during the forecast period. According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is increased demand for premium packaging. Premium packaging has high unit cost and is targeted toward specific customers. SciFutures: From Storytelling to Storydoing Often new printing technologies and possibilities sound like coming straight from a Science-Fiction movie. Or were you able to imagine solar cells and living organs or bones coming out of a printer some years ago? So, the challenge for all innovative technologies always is to make clear that there will be a need for it in future making it worth researching on it now. SciFutures helps companies to face this challenge by using Science-Fiction storytelling and prototype building as a tool. Often new printing technologies and marketing solutions sound like coming straight from a Science-Fiction movie. Or were you able to imagine solar cells and living organs or bonescoming out of a printer some years ago? So, the challenge for all innovative technologies always is to make clear that there will be a need for it in future making it worth researching on it now. SciFutures helps
companies to face this challenge by using Science-Fiction storytelling and prototype building as a tool. Telling Stories in an Unconventional Way Some of the largest multi-billion dollar companies like Visa or Ford have already collaborated with SciFutures in the past. One essential element of SciFutures‘ workflow contains the creation of a Science-Fiction comic which shows how people might use a new technology in the future embedded in a thrilling storyline. Science-Fiction succeeds by conveying the effects of future technologies on characters readers can relate to. To obtain the best result regarding this, the
small consulting and prototyping startup works with a network of more than 100 Science-Fiction writers. Hershey Company, for example, has built a system to 3D-print chocolate but they were unsure if chocolate customers would recognize the printer’s usefulness for their daily lives. SciFutures helped Hershey showing their clients its benefits by creating a graphic novel that illustrates how people might use this printer in the future. Marketing with Stories You Can Touch In case the new technology only exists in theory SciFutures‘ working progress revolves around building a prototype of the innovation. For Lowe’s Companies Inc SciFutures built the HoloRoom. It is a 20-by-20-foot space where customers can envision how Lowe’s products like furniture or flooring would look in their own homes via an Augmented Reality headset. With a tablet, they can pick up various products. By the way: HoloRoom is inspired by Science-Fiction as well: It imitates the Holodeck, a fictitious room from the TV series „Star Trek“ that creates real-looking environments suitable for experiments. Bringing products and technologies to life with Science-Fiction is an easy way to attract the attention of potential clients and show them the technology’s relevance in their daily life.

5 Packaging Trends in 2017 Every year the print and packaging industry are challenged to reinvent themselves by developing better technologies or more innovative ideas. 2017 is an exciting year for every player in the industry with companies able to show off some new designs and creations. We gathered for you some of the trends and packaging ideas of this year.
1. It’s All About the User Experience The decision to buy a product begins with the packaging. Brands have to get the awareness of their customers with creative designs and give them a special moment when discovering a new product. iF Design Award winner Metsä Board shows in an interesting way how product and packaging can harmonize. This eye-catching design for the Victorinox Rescue Tool simulates the functions the product with its design so that the consumer gets a unique experience. 2. Hidden Messages on Products Designers constantly experiment with new forms and materials to make
packagings special: This design, for instance, has two faces: When the bottle is full, it shows one message when and another when the consumer emptied it.
Temperature-sensitive packaging is not something fairly new, but 2016 brought some interesting designs with it such as this bottle design from blk water.

24 are. The smart trend does not stop with packaging. Today, packaging is designed to tell consumers how fresh a product is, if it is still usable or communicate other information. One example is this intelligent food packaging from the Swedish Startup iFoodbag. It is made from a composite material, which can protect frozen and chilled food up to 24 hours. 5. Taking Care of the Ecological Footprint People more and more become aware of environmental matters and therefore care about what they buy, 3. Shapes Wherever You Look Our world is full of circles, squares, triangles and so on. Packaging designers have embraced this in many of 2016’s packaging ideas. Be it for beauty products, food or beverage packaging – shapes can be found everywhere, for instance in this design for Corinne Cosmetics by Designer Anna Trympali. 4. Smart is the New Packaging With the rise of the Internet of Things many products can be connected to the internet, help consumers find a taxi, the right clothes or tell them how fit they where they eat and how their products are produced. Even in packaging, this trend shows in various ideas of how to make them more sustainable. This first fully-renewable bio-based Tetra Pak is a perfect example of this trend. It is developed by Tetra Rex and consists of a combination of plastics derived from sugar cane and paperboard.

Fuji Xerox Helps Ja Expand Business Ov Utilizing Fuji Xerox’s global sales network, Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. is supporting Kyoshin Paper & Package Co., Ltd., a leading paper container and package printing and manufacturing company based in Kobe, Japan, to expand its business into overseas markets. Digital package printing is a growing Note1 market and through this support for Kyoshin Paper & Package, Fuji Xerox aims to promote further expansion of the digital printing market as a whole. Fuji Xerox supported one of its Premier Partners Note2, Kyoshin Paper & Package, to find a local printing firm from among Fuji Xerox’s overseas Premier Partner network that are interested in expanding business in package printing. By serving as an intermediate in negotiations between Kyoshin Paper & Package and an overseas printing firm as well as supporting the process until contracts are signed between the two, in addition to providing linguistic and other overall assistance, Fuji Xerox intends to increase the number of companies that enter the digital package printing market using Fuji Xerox’s production printers, with the aim of vitalizing the market. After contracts are signed, Fuji Xerox’s local sales companies will assist in
smooth communication between Kyoshin Paper & Package and local printing firms as well as in matters concerning printing itself. Kyoshin Paper & Package will quickly expand its business overseas by utilizing Fuji Xerox’s global sales network, providing local printing firms with consulting services concerning the production and sales of paper containers and packages while also granting the firms a franchise for the localized version of Hacoplay, an online package printing service site with proven popularity in Japan, which is equipped with an online price quotation system. Kyoshin Paper & Package aims to advance into five countries within two years through support from Fuji Xerox. While this collaboration will enable Kyoshin Paper & Package to accelerate its overseas expansion, it will also allow Fuji Xerox to accumulate knowhow concerning package printing by introducing the Hacoplay business
to local printing firms that use Fuji Xerox’s production printers. Fuji Xerox also aims to expand the printon-demand package printing market in the Asia-Pacific region. Through this collaboration, both companies will share each other’s ideas and knowhow with a view to establishing a longterm partnership, including joint development of a new printing system. As product variety is becoming increasingly diversified and product cycles are being shortened, the printing industry is under need to quickly

develop services that meet the growing demand of the market for small-lot and short-lead-time package production. In addition, amid the sluggish overall printing market in Japan, printing companies are seeking to expand their business overseas, but many of them are hesitating to make such an investment by themselves and are being confronted with the challenge of how to minimize risks while offering services that keep abreast with changing market needs. Advancing into South Korea As the first step of its overseas expansion, Kyoshin Paper & Package has teamed up with DPLUS Co., Ltd., a South Korean printing company who is also a Premier Partner Note2 using Xerox iGen 5 150 Press and other Fuji Xerox production printers. Kyoshin Paper & Package will provide consulting services concerning the production and sales of paper containers and packages, and grant the Korean partner with a franchise for the localized Hacoplay system. DPLUS will commence Hacoplay services in South Korea on August 28.
In the South Korean market, where online ordering and print-on-demand package printing services have not taken hold as strongly as in Japan, DPLUS is seeking to launch the new business efficiently by utilizing the Hacoplay system and knowhow of Kyoshin Paper & Package as well as assistance from Fuji Xerox Korea, Fuji Xerox’s local sales company. DPLUS aims to generate sales of 1.5 billion won (about 1.3 million USD) Note 3 over the next two years.
Kyoshin Paper & Package launched its Hacoplay business in 2011 to offer an online ordering system for smalllot production and printing of fancy boxes and other paper packaging boxes. Any shape, size, and design can be designated through a Web browser, and packages are printed using Fuji Xerox’s Xerox iGen 4 digital press, Fujifilm’s Jet Press 720S B2 sheet-fed digital inkjet press, and others. Annual sales from the Hacoplay business exceeded 500 million yen within about three and a half years after commencement of the services, and the company’s target is to achieve annual sales of more than 2 billion yen within five years, by 2022.

The Case Study: Hua Li Da
The Business Industry: Packaging Printing for Cosmetics Goods Name: Hua Li Da Packaging Co Ltd (HLD) Headquarters: Shanghai, China The Challenge - Increase in customer demand requiring short turnaround times. - Inefficient use of production press to create colour proofs. - A need to match colour and appearance of the proof with the final product. The Solution - ORIS Flex Pack // Web system The Results - Successfully delivered accurate and quality colour proofs on short turnaround times. - Significantly lower overall costs on proofing. - Improve customer communication and speed up approval process to increase customer satisfaction. - Actively work with designers to innovate and create specialty packaging, presenting new revenue streams.
How one packaging printing company implemented a cost-effective proofing solution to remain competitive and innovative in China’s burgeoning cosmetics market. By Sha Jumari. Hua Li Da Packaging Co Ltd (HLD) is a Shanghai-based packaging printing company which focuses on the cosmetics industry. Over the years, the company’s key values of speed, innovation and safety, has allowed it to become an established name within the luxury packaging printing space. Today, HLD has a staff of 280, and its list of clientele includes a number of domestic and international cosmetics brands. A report by Research and Markets projected that the global digital printing market for packaging to grow at a CAGR of 10.58% over a period of 2017 to 2021. According to the study, one of the prolific key drivers for this growth is an increased demand for premium packaging. In 2016, the premium packaging market was approximately worth $15 billion, with cosmetics holding a market share by
revenue of 40%. Perfectly positioned to enjoy this wave of demand for premium packaging is HLD. In 2016, the company’s reported turnover was RMB 115 million. HLD’s stand-out feature to remain competitive in this highly saturated market is its ongoing cooperation with brand owners to constantly innovate and fabricate new packaging designs.
“We’re able to form healthy relationships with cosmetics brands by focusing on researching and developing packaging for fast-moving and luxurious products such as makeup and perfume,” said Luo Ming Hua, general manager, HLD. As business for HLD grew on a steady incline, it began facing production issues particularly at the prepress stage. Traditionally, the company has been

CGS had for proofing specially for packaging, which would hold similar benefits and values as digital proofing in the commercial printing space,” said Arthur Kwok, sales director for the Greater China area, CGS. “HLD was looking for a packaginguse digital proofing solution that is not just able to dramatically alleviate the need for off-the-press proofing, but is also flexible and responsive enough to create value to upstream players in terms of package design and development. The Flex Pack // Web is a game-changer that can exactly match proofs and prototypes to press output, at a fraction of the costs of legacy proofing systems, making it the perfect solution for HLD,” Kwok continued. The system consists of the Roland VersaCAMM VS-300i printer, powered by ORIS Flex Pack // Web software. Utilising CGS’ patented four-dimensional iterative colour management software, the solution, combined with a specially-designed custom interface for the Roland digital press, can provide web-based hard copy and soft proofing in one package.
using its fleet of Heidelberg presses to also produce proofs. However, this method soon proved inefficient as the company struggled to meet increasing customer orders and demands. “Most often, the sales department has very short notice, especially so during the proofing approval stage. This puts high pressure on the production department to work on very short turnaround times to run the requested proof, and consequently having to reschedule mass production,” said Luo. “An off-the-press proofing job would occupy the press for a full working day. This meant the productivity of the machine during that time was completely wasted and mass production had to give way and wait.” The Digital Proofing Solution To solve this issue, the company installed the ORIS Flex Pack // Web
system in early 2016, a unique digital printing solution that can produce highly accurate packaging proofs and mock-up reproductions. “When HLD approached us in mid2015, we were asked what solution
HLD took six months in their decisionmaking process. Due to the high quality required of luxury packaging, it was essential that the proof is the most accurate to the final printed packaging.

30 metal. The system has varnishing and embossing options, and can produce proofs at a fraction compared to conventional proofing methods. “The Flex Pack // Web is a unique solution in today’s market offering high definition and the closest simulation of the final packaging. Our company is using it as a weapon to provide added value to brand owners. At the same time, we’re able to benefit from lowered production costs, especially the hidden ones,” Luo concluded.
“We had to conduct various testing to make sure that the colour from the proof can be achieved from the press, which is a primary concern. A lot of UV printers that we looked at simply can’t produce the colour quality and visual appearance that we would get from the press. Until we came across the Flex Pack // Web solution,” Luo explained. The Competitive Edge Upon installing the system, HLD was able to present customers with high quality proofs that is accurate to the colour and appearance of the final packaging. The solution leverages on CGS’ specially developed XG inks, which are formulated for proofing applications. The CMYK set is completely redefined with the addition of orange and green, to significantly expand the colour gamut and making spot colour accuracy easy. The Flex Pack // Web system has a broad media portfolio and is able to print on almost any printing substrate, to produce even the most demanding packaging proofing needs. The Flex Pack // Web system further facilitates HLD’s active participation in innovating and creating special packaging by working directly with designers of brand owners. Not only does this foster a creative environment between the companies, it also brings in additional revenue streams for HLD. In addition, HLD experienced the benefits immediately as approval times improved. Since HLD no longer
needed to halt mass production to create proofs, they were also able to report lowered overall costs. “Flex Pack // Web is able to produce accurate colour proof swiftly. Due to the quick turnaround times, communication and comments with our client is in parallel to the production run,” said Luo. “As a result, we’re able to meet with our client demands a lot more effectively, as our response time has been shortened. In addition, we found that the overall production cost has decreased.” The Flex Pack // Web is a solution that is able to cover all aspects of packaging printing, from flexible, rigid to even labels. The ORIS transfer film is a key feature to allow the physical transfer of contract-proof quality print to literally any substrate common in packaging, even specialty stock like IML film or
Christoph Thommessen, sales director for Asia Pacific, CGS, commented: “Cosmetics packaging is a growth area that is gaining the most traction in Asia Pacific. This is the segment in which a lot of analog printers and converters are turning to digital solutions to be more productive. We’re glad to partner a company that is as revolutionary and forward-looking as Hua Li Da, so that we can also continuously innovate to better serve the evolving market.”

Industrial print production with ErgoTronic AutoRun • • • •
Standard for industrial print production Fully automatic production process without manual intervention Significant productivity increase in commercial and packaging printing Decentralised process monitoring via mobile devices and Rapida LiveApp
Automation of the individual process steps in print production is today more important than ever before. It is in many respects the only way to achieve further significant increases in productivity and competitiveness, by helping to exploit the performance capabilities of pressroom technologies to the full. A great deal has already happened in this direction – job changeover times are today dramatically shorter, workflows are supported by closedloop processes, and the first users are enjoying the benefits of data-driven services such as performance reports and benchmarking.
The Rapida presses from KBASheetfed already incorporate extensive automation: For top production speeds up to 20,000 sheets/hour, for lightning-fast makeready and even flying job changes, for precise inline quality control, and for increased economic efficiency through reduced non-productive times and minimised
waste. With ErgoTronic AutoRun, KBA-Sheetfed is now able to present the next level of process automation for industrial print production. Intelligent systems relieve operators ErgoTronic AutoRun starts a job change fully automatically as soon as the production of the previous print job is completed – and then

Two clicks are all it takes to activate autonomous printing at the ErgoTronic console 1 Job change starts at the end of production 2 Production starts at the end of a job change resumes production automatically once the necessary makeready steps are completed. This cycle is then repeated over and over until either the operator cancels the auto-run function or else all the jobs on the prepared job list have been printed. For section changes and web-to-print jobs, it is not even necessary to configure a new makeready process. Start of makeready, job changeover, start of production, colour and register control – all the individual steps are fully integrated and everything is triggered automatically at the appropriate moment. Press crews simply monitor the process sequence and are thus relieved of further routine tasks. They must only place the new plates in the corresponding channels of the plate changers, ensure that the necessary substrates and consumables are available when needed, and then take care of pile changes – insofar as pile changing is not also automated. The principal field of application for ErgoTronic AutoRun is autonomous printing for the commercial sector – for example short-run jobs or multiple sections for products with high page counts. Language variants are a further possibility. Autonomous printing also benefits online printers with their highly standardised and automated processes. And in packaging, too,
it can be useful to be able to start makeready automatically when the predefined run length is reached, or to return to production without further intervention upon completion of a complex job change. KBA-Sheetfed laid the foundations for ErgoTronic AutoRun as far back as 2013 with the launch of its awardwinning TouchTronic operating concept. The job changeover program on the ErgoTronic console possesses a very clear and logical structure. The printer sees all the relevant settings at a glance and can initiate a job change with just a single tap on the screen (OneButton Job Change). An interactive job list presents all the currently planned jobs to the operator, who can then re‑arrange the order at any time, for example to group together products which are to be printed on the same substrate or in the same format. Already at this stage, it is possible to enter and configure all the necessary makeready functions for each job. ErgoTronic AutoRun coordinates the existing automation modules and in this way automates the print process as a whole. At the end of a shift or after processing of the complete job list, the press can be stopped manually in the usual manner.
The console goes mobile with the Rapida LiveApp Operators are similarly more flexible than ever before when it comes to monitoring of the production process. They can now carry a mobile control console in their pocket. With a smartphone and the Rapida LiveApp, they are always in touch with their press – even while taking a coffee break in the canteen. A glance at the display provides details of the job which is currently in production and how much longer it will take to complete. The press crew can then decide at leisure when they need to be back at the press to load up the plates for the next job, for example. In addition to the press status, the app provides a raft of live information from the running production, including even energy consumption and the equivalent carbon emissions per 1,000 sheets. With the batch data function, consumables such as paper and ink can be tracked either manually or by way of QR codes and assigned to the relevant job. The place of consumption, for example a certain inking unit, is determined automatically and saved in the data record. Whether inks, substrates, blankets or plates: All data are made available for tracing purposes or inventory management – immediately

and without further intervention. The data are sent from the mobile device to the console, and automatically passed on via LogoTronic Professional and JMF to the company management information software. The integrated maintenance manager draws attention to the press care required on the current day, as well as tasks which are scheduled for the coming days. The additional specification of the time needed for each task enables maintenance work to be planned such that it does not disturb production. Illustrated, step-by-step instructions explain the individual tasks to the operator. This further simplifies the maintenance process and avoids all misunderstandings. Each maintenance step can be marked as “done after completion and the operator can also add individual remarks and comments, where appropriate. Standards for automation in print It is the continued intention of KBASheetfed to define new standards for sheetfed offset with innovative solutions and proactive services. ErgoTronic AutoRun and the Rapida LiveApp are examples of such standards. They further enhance the capabilities of the presses, take workload off the operators and generally brighten up the work environment with modern operating sequences. In a nutshell: They boost the competitiveness of those print companies who are able to make use of them.

Making Print Advertisements to Interactive Experiences With the increasing rise of advertising channels, marketers have to carefully consider where and how to promote their products or services. Another challenge is the distraction triggered by permanent media consumption. But the clever combination of different channels is able to turn this into an advantage. The following overview presents two ways of making print advertisements to interactive experiences and gathered some examples illustrating how to engage readers. With the increasing rise of advertising channels, marketers have to carefully consider where and how to promote their products or services. Another challenge is the distraction triggered by permanent media consumption. But the clever combination of different channels is able to turn this into an advantage. The following overview presents two ways of making print advertisements to interactive experiences and gathered some
examples illustrating how to engage readers. Turning Printed Advertisements into Mobile Shopping Carts Many marketing experts aim to make the customer journey as comfortable as possible and get a better ROI. This is how PORTER and Glamour Spain tackled these issues. Translating Images Into Sales With Porter Net-a-Porter combined their client’s favourite way of finding content with their favourite medium of buying content. According to a customer survey, the fashion online retailer found out that 80 percent of their clients preferred to find fashion inspiration via print fashion magazines. Therefore they reinvented their magazine PORTER by allowing readers to directly shop from the pages. This is possible thanks to an app enabling them to hover a mobile device over the products displayed in the issue. Then, an icon with a shop function will appear providing information on brand and price. And this concept pays off: In 2015, items were scanned 85,000 times, representing an interaction rate of approximately 78 percent! More on this in our blog article. Online Purchases Made Easy With G-Live The idea Condé Nast Digital Spain, the publishing house behind the magazine, had in mind when developing the app, was quite similar. In order to provide Glamour readers with new functionalities, the G-Live app converts print advertisements into interactive shopping experiences thanks to an image recognition technology. This technology is integrated into the app and leads readers to videos or online
product pages. As a result, they can instantly purchase the items they fell in love with just after scanning them with the G-Live app. Printed Advertisements Bring Real and Virtual Life Together Another way of putting printed advertisements to a new level are the versatile opportunities virtual reality tools offer. See how Vespa and Nivea used augmented reality technologies to bring static print content to life. Creating a Customized Vespa with Augmented Reality The popular Italian scooter company caught their potential customers by letting them personalize their very own Vespa instead of just looking at a printed advertisement. Through an app, the reader can scan the advertisement on any mobile device and gets to know the full variety of options available when designing their custom scooter. Thanks to GPS capabilities, the app is even able to direct them to the nearest Vespa location afterwards. Additionally, social media integration allows them to share their design with friends on Facebook and Twitter Vespa Augmented Reality from 900lbs of Creative on Vimeo. Old but Gold: Tracking Kids With Nivea In order to let parents better keep an eye on their kids on a crowded beach, the cosmetics brand Nivea published printed advertisements containing a wristband with a built-in locator. After attaching this bracelet around the child’s wrist and downloading an app called “Nivea Protégé”, parents can set the distance that they consider safe. If their child wanders outside this zone, the app sends a notification showing where the child is relative to the parents. More on this in our blog article.

Colour Mate Digital adds 3.2-meter Esko Kongsberg C60 for efficiency and diversification Delhi-based signage and display firm Colour Mate Digital installed the Esko Kongsberg C60 3.2-meter digital cutting table in April 2017. They are the first customer in India to purchase this wide Kongsberg multifunctional digital finishing table for signage, display graphics and packaging applications. Colour Mate needed more speed and support for their diversification strategy into packaging applications, and the Kongsberg table was an ideal solution. Colour Mate Digital partner Mr. Sandeep Bhutani states, “Our first Kongsberg table—an XN44 installed more than four years ago—has been a wonderful experience for us. As our market grew in volume and we achieved sophistication in design, we needed a faster and more versatile solution for finishing the output
generated on our eight wide format inkjet printers. We evaluated our options, and without hesitation chose the Esko Kongsberg C60 digital cutting table. A huge benefit is its ability to cut vinyl sign boards, ECP, Sunpack foam board sheets, soft textiles, flex, PVC and several other substrates of varying thickness and density.” Mr. Bhutani adds, “The signage and display market in India is growing at a healthy rate of 22 to 25% annually. Multinational corporations are investing heavily in India for brand-building activities, and this is quite encouraging for digital printing operations like us.” Colour Mate Digital has kept pace with the industry growth; the company has a 10,000-square-foot plant and 40 employees. It produces POP displays, signage, banners and billboards for a broad range of clients including advertising agencies, stand builders and architects. Mr. Bhutani is very optimistic about the company’s future potential for growth since POP signage and displays are an extremely efficient way for consumer product and service companies to target specific audiences. The new Kongsberg C60 at Colour Mate Digital with automation features, including a roll feeder and conveyor, has increased the company’s daily finishing and converting capacity from 100 to 500 sheets. With the C60’s special knives, router tools and automation, 95% of the materials used for wide format signage and POP displays can be converted with high accuracy quickly. Future Ready Colour Mate Digital has plans to further enhance its operation by adding Esko’s ArtiosCAD structural design software for corrugated, folding carton, POP, POS, and free standing displays. “The addition of ArtiosCAD will make us future-ready as well as help us design more complicated designs with greater ease and precision,” Mr. Bhutani adds. “It also helps that Esko’s experienced team in India is always ready to help us with its domain expertise and handholding when needed.”

Accurate color measurement to smartphones and ecommerce applications
“Color is a deciding factor in a customer’s purchasing decision and can be a leading cause for customer returns,” said Chris Winczewski, Vice President, Strategy and Product Planning, X-Rite. “Color-Eye is the
X-Rite Incorporated, a global leader in color science and technology, and its subsidiary Pantone LLC, announced the launch of ColorEye®, a groundbreaking solution that brings accurate color measurement to smartphones and ecommerce applications. Color-Eye uses a smartphone and a color calibration card to help consumers shop for new items that match or complement the color of items they have at home. It delivers the highest level of color consistency available in a consumer retail shopping application. Cosmetics, home and fashion and retail paint companies can integrate Color-Eye into their existing mobile shopping applications, allowing consumers to search, match and purchase
X-Rite research shows that consumers lack confidence in purchasing colorcritical items online. This uncertainty is typically due to past experiences which did not meet expectations and a difficulty in communicating color from home to store. Consumers expect to be able to simply take a photo of the inspiration color and match it to a desired item. However, digital camera technology alone cannot accurately determine an object’s color, which is affected by lighting, glossiness, texture, angle of view, and sensitivity of the camera. Color calibration tools and color software are required to help overcome these challenges to provide a more color accurate image.
How Color-Eye Works Color-Eye is a slim color calibration card that is used in collaboration with a smartphone application to accurately measure the color of any inspirational item. Color readings are incorporated into a retailer’s mobile shopping application and deliver the consumer a set of matching or coordinating products. Color-Eye utilizes X-Rite’s expertise to calibrate color values across all lighting conditions. The application, in use with the smartphone, incorporates dual-illumination technology by taking two images with the flash on and off resulting in improved color accuracy. The calibration card is manufactured with a unique process that creates both glossy bubbles and patches to help account for lighting glare. Together the calibration card and the X-Rite software help prevent bad color matches due to poor lighting; and guides users as they position the phone to avoid glare. The result is a more reliable color reading that can communicate with a brand or retailer’s ecommerce application and product database to deliver consumers matching or harmonizing products. “Color-Eye builds on the success of the X-Rite CAPSUREme Cosmetic offering that uses custom printed cards and a smartphone to match skin tones with foundation colors,” continues Winczewski. “With ColorEye, we have taken this technology a step further to account for lighting, texture and gloss in order to reliably match any item a consumer may have at home to find coordinating colors. Color-Eye gives retailers and paint manufacturers the opportunity to build consumer trust by enabling greater confidence in color-critical

48 purchases, both online and in-store. This increases consumer loyalty, reduces returns, and drives purchases of paint and beyond.” Color-Eye currently supports iPhone SE, 6S, 6S+, 7, 7+; Android Nexus 5; and Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S7, S7 Edge, S7 Active. Additional devices will be supported in the future. Domino Digital Printing Solutions is targeting the label industry Domino Digital Printing Solutions is targeting the label industry with its latest DFE (Digital Front End) workflow solution designed for the N-Series range of digital colour presses. With improved operating speed and streamlined automation, DFEv2.0 maintains compatibility with the latest Esko code base and can work with a number of VDP (variable data printing) formats. DFEv2.0’s full capabilities will be showcased on the Domino stand at Labelexpo Europe 2017 (Stand 9A60, Brussels Expo, 25th – 28th September 2017). “Workflow integration is a fundamental component for an efficient digital printing process that should not be underestimated,” explains Simon Howes, Product Manager – Digital Printing Solutions at Domino. “The effective management of press time while optimising print quality needs to be guaranteed, especially for brand-oriented sectors such as labelling and packaging.” The new screener, Domino ScreenPro, streamlines the workflow by combining several processes into a single JDF workflow, which enhances speed and efficiency as well as enabling full offline VDP operation and additional capabilities within DFEv2.0. When compared to DFEv1.2, the increase in job processing speeds is
significant, and has a major impact when using multiple page PDF files for variable data printing. For example, the RIP-to-print ratio of the latest version of ScreenPro is four to five times faster than the previous DFE solution. The introduction of a new JDF workflow means automation is further enhanced. The need for manual file conversions is removed, while key information such as ‘lead-in/lead-out’, ‘copy count by quantity’ or ‘print run length’ can be passed from the DFE directly to the digital press, keeping operator intervention to an absolute minimum. “While speed and automation are the two features likely to appeal the most to label printers, versatility also has an important role to play,” says Howes. “The new workflow adds the ability to work with various VDP formats, such as multiple page PDF and PDF/VT files for the printing of variable data, barcodes and 2D barcodes, offering the printer a wider range of options to work with.” “With this new workflow, Domino is providing labellers with a comprehensive platform for managing integrated production and there is no better place to showcase the benefits of this technology than Labelexpo Europe,” concludes Howes. “We look forward to welcoming visitors to our workflow station on the Domino stand when the show opens in September.” Breakthrough Scodix E106 enhancement press for the folding carton market Scodix, the world’s leading provider of digital enhancement solutions for the graphic arts industry, today announces that beta testing for its breakthrough Scodix E106 enhancement press for the folding carton market is happen-
