The Bangkok-based label converter provides speciality labels and packaging solutions for home and personal care, health care, and food and beverage markets. According to its Deputy Managing Director: “We invest in state-of-the-art technology to automate our processes to achieve consistent and high quality products.” For several years, SLP enjoyed a strategic alliance with European converter Pago International AG. High Print Quality, Low Odour eco-solvent ink series Sun Chemical, the world’s leading manufacturer of printing inks and pigments, is today launching the Streamline ESL 2 range of eco-solvent inks, which have been designed specifically for use as a direct alternative to Roland Eco Sol Max II inks in the Roland Pro 4 (XF 640, XR 640, Versa Express RF 640 and Versa CAMM VSi) series of eco-solvent wide format printers.

Streamline ESL 2 is Sun Chemical’s latest addition to its Streamline product range to use the HPQ-LO (High Print Quality – Low Odour) eco-solvent chemistry platform, which offers a significant advantage for printers working in confined environments. The seven colour ink series includes CMYK with a revised nickel-free yellow ink, Light Cyan, Light Magenta and a new Light Black ink. ESL 2 has been perfectly colour-matched to the Roland Eco Sol Max II ink series, eliminating the need for re-profiling when converting from the original inks. Furthermore, it can also be intermixed with the Roland inks to allow for easy transition without any waste. Explains

James

Gould,

Manager, Digital Aftermarket at Sun Chemical, “To guarantee exact reproduction to the Roland inks, the development of ESL 2 included the selection of a completely revised yellow pigment as well as the introduction of Light Black.” James continues, “The inks have gone through stringent tests, both in-house and at beta customer sites across Europe, to ensure a robust ink formulation that can deliver the highest standards across multiple print settings and substrate types. Results have also shown that ESL 2 offers excellent outdoor durability and is superior to the Roland inks for resistance to alcohol when printed on suitable media, ensuring customer graphics

maintain their highest quality over time. We are therefore confident that Roland Pro 4 users will agree that ESL 2 exceeds other inks in print quality and performance, allowing them to benefit from the full potential of their latest generation Roland eco-solvent devices.” ESL 2, developed and manufactured at Sun Chemical’s global headquarters for inkjet at Midsomer Norton, UK, is available in 440ml cartridges and 1 litre ink bottles. These can be used in Sun Chemical’s Streamline range of bulk ink feed systems, which have been designed specifically to meet the performance demands of the Roland Pro 4 printers and to offer improved productivity and reduced costs for customers. Sun Chemical will continue providing its popular ESL HPQ LO ink for customers using Roland’s established Pro 2 and Pro 3 platforms.

ASQ Labels goes digital ASQ Labels is currently expanding into new markets thanks to the wide colour gamut and high resolution printing capabilities of Domino’s N610i, UV digital ink jet label press. Based in Belgium, the company specialises in label printing for a variety of sectors, including high quality food and beverage brands, as well as providing flow-pack printing, wrappers and single-layer packaging.

ASQ Labels was founded in 1988 in Lummen, during a time when the Belgian government was incentivising new businesses in the area. By 1998 the labelling company had 45 employees and had relocated to a 2000 sq. metre property. ASQ originally serviced a wide range of markets, until the recent economic crisis forced the company to re-evaluate its focus. “We were a heavily sales-driven organisation that, until 2008, was successful in the automotive, transport, logistics and warehousing sectors,” recounts Raf Joos, CEO of ASQ Labels.

He continues: “That’s when we realised that high end food and beverage products would be a key area of interest, as there will always be a demand for a high quality label with eye-catching graphics to go with the product. Today we are heavily involved in the Belgian beer and chocolate sectors.”

to be able to print directly onto the standard substrate materials used by ASQ without the need for pre-coating; secondly, the system had to be able to print the high-resolution, bright images that ASQ’s customers expect to see on their product labels; thirdly, the requirement to print transparent labels.

Raf began looking into a UV ink jet solution in 2010, but initially was not convinced by the technology as it was still in its infancy. The system the company needed had to address three key requirements: first and foremost, the digital solution had

It was not until witnessing firsthand Domino’s N610i digital press at Labelexpo Europe 2013 that ASQ took notice of the possibilities that UV ink jet could bring. Raf continues: “When Domino invited us to their headquarters in the UK, we were

13 given the opportunity to print a series of different label samples on a range of our standard flexo substrates. Not only were we impressed with the end result, we also realised that the press’ inclusion of opaque white would prove extremely useful for printing onto transparent materials. It is a very opaque white- it looks like it’s been screen printed. That was the moment we were won over by the Domino N610i.” The N610i operates at speeds of up to 75 metres (246ft) per minute with a 600dpi native resolution and is available in 4, 5, 6 and 7 colours. The highly opaque white ink which delivers a silkscreen-like finish is ideal for printing solids through to fine detail onto metallic and clear label materials. Elke Buckinx, Operations Manager at ASQ Labels, comments on the smooth transition period, as the company went from using flexo printing systems to employing the N610i for customer service. After just five weeks, we were producing labels for our customers. We have a mixture of new customers, and definitely new jobs are more colourful. We have moved a number of jobs over that we previously printed on flexo, such as short runs and we now print

several versions in one run, without the need to change the plates.” Wim Wouters, whom operates the N610i comments; “It’s very easy to use. There is little wasted paper, and when you reprint a job, the file is already there, and you always het the same colour, exactly like the first time you printed it.” Raf continues with an anecdote: “Belgium is well known worldwide for its beer. We took advantage of the

N610i’s personalisation option to print our own personalised beer label. The brewery sector were impressed with the possibilities this presents.” He concludes: “We are now in a position to enter new markets that I am 100% convinced we would not have been able to approach if we had not invested in UV ink jet and specifically the N610i.”

Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Unveils Integrated Customer Experience Center in Thailand The new center features a collaborative approach to help customers in the production printing industry explore new capabilities and grow their business. By Sha Jumari. On 1 September 2015, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific officially opened the doors to its new Integrated Customer Experience Center in Bangkok, Thailand. The 3,600-square meter facility will serve customers across the Asia Pacific region. The center aims to aid customers in discovering new or improved methods of delivering value to their own clients while addressing print and communication needs.

“The key focus of this center is to have our regional customers expand their business into new segments and markets by collaborating with our team to develop and explore new print applications using Fuji Xerox technology,” said Masashi Honda, president and CEO, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. Fuji Xerox’s full suite of production printing capabilities is available at

the center to facilitate the close collaboration in a simulated customer environment: “The Integrated Customer Experience Center is not actually a production showroom. We want this facility to be able to duplicate the environment of our customers’ customers. Customers will be able to benchmark and conduct end-to-end application testing in this facility to help discover new opportunities to grow their business,” Honda added. The digital colour printing market in Asia Pacific grew by 4% in 2012 and has been projected to grow by 8.3% in 2017. By 2021, it is estimated that there will be more than 1.2 trillion digital colour pages printed per year.

“As a market leader, it is our task to nurture and develop the Asia Pacific market, and we hope to do that from this facility. Some of our regional customers today are still focused on their traditional business, and it is our responsibility at Fuji Xerox to show them what other opportunities they could consider with our technology platforms,” said Honda.

web-integration workflows, design, pre-press and print production, the staff are also equipped to provide consultation on ways to increase efficiencies and explore new opportunities. The center will also hold Business development workshops and schedule seminars focusing on Fuji Xerox’s range of business solutions and software.

“Thailand is easily accessible and affordable in terms of maintenance. This country also has a rising pool of creative professionals who deeply understand the print industry, which is crucial for us to develop the market,” Honda continued.

“I’m happy to see this facility set up in Thailand! Thailand is one of the fastest growing markets. By setting up this centre, we are showing our customers that Fuji Xerox is a frontrunner in the industry. This is most important for us,” said Honda. “I look forward to having all the customers from

At the center, customers will have the opportunity to explore adjacent markets by experimenting and developing various print applications, such as photo books, book publishing and direct mail. For example, a company that traditionally prints transactional-type documents such as invoices can visit the center and use it to test-trans-promotional materials. Customers are also able to carry out media testing on different substrates. The center has professional and technical personnel to help customers conduct end-to-end solution testing. Besides being able to provide expertise in areas such as color management,

our region, even Australia and New Zealand, to visit and make full use of our facility to develop their businesses and enhance their capabilities.”

Launch of the New 1400 Inkjet Color Continuous Feed Printing System In conjunction with the opening ceremony of the Integrated Customer Experience Center, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific introduced the 1400 Inkjet Color Continuous Feed Printing System, single-engine duplex. Catered to the Asia Pacific market, the high performance and compact entrylevel press is targeted at the data and commercial printing markets. “Traditionally, inkjets require high print volumes and a high capital investment to enter this business sector. The new 1400 single-engine duplex system has a very small footprint and is profitable for shorter average monthly print volumes than the standard twin engine 1400,” said Honda. “This is an opportunity for our legacy customers to move into the inkjet space. These are typically companies that want the benefit of inkjets, which boast high speed, high quality and low running costs, but haven’t had

the capital until now to support a big purchase and make the machine truly profitable.” The 1400 Inkjet Color Continuous Feed Printing System (Model-S2H) is space-efficient. Compared to dualengine inkjets, this single-engine system extends affordability and size, making it an entry-level purchase for customers exploring the high-end inkjet printing business. The highspeed, high-resolution full-colour printer is scalable to suit various business needs from basic print to high-volume data jobs at up to 100 meter/minute. “One of these machines has the potential to replace two or three toner devices and rationalize a customer’s current fleet of existing equipment and free up space for other uses. It’s also an opportunity to see improved efficiency in the business. These solutions have very high uptime, are incredibly reliable and provide enormous productivity benefits,” said Honda. “It's the first day we’ve shown this to the market and we’ve already had a huge amount of interest. We see a lot of potential for this 1400 press for this industry,” added Honda. “We have had some early engagements with customers in China and Australia, and there is a lot of interest for this press because it fulfills the brief of listening to what our customers need.” High Quality and Performance Equipped with a high-speed raster image processor (RIP) for concurrent output processing, the inkjet features the latest piezo print head technology. This technology produces sharp and smooth images up to 600x600 dots

per inch (dpi), similar to those in offset presses. This allows companies to create documents with clear characters and numbers, print high-quality images and sharp two-dimensional barcodes. This single engine inkjet printer offers users the option of duplex printing for paper width up to 254 millimeters, fitted with a unique paper path to enable one engine to print on both sides of the paper. The near-infrared dryer complements a cooling roller to enhance ink-drying performance, and an easy-to-use touch panel display and graphical user interface allow for operating and managing print jobs efficiently. Flexibility to Meet Different Needs Designed to meet the varied needs of each customer, the inkjet can be customized to match different business requirements, such as volume, performance and application type. Companies can enhance the basic model, ideal for entry-level customers, to a superior model according to their business needs. . Users of the 1400 can choose from a variety of preprocessing and finishing options, such as sheeting and folding. With this latest addition to its inkjet portfolio, Fuji Xerox now has the full range of inkjet products to support the growing demand for fast high-volume production, new applications and variable data printing. Businesses can now leverage on these inkjet solutions to fully address their requirements and better reach out to their customers in a very competitive market.

FINAT’S SEAL OF APPROVAL FOR TESA® TAPE FINAT, the international association for the self-adhesive label industry announces its Test Methods Sub-committee has completed a successful analysis of tesa® 7475 PV2. Seven different laboratories tested 22 different liners and produced 5544 release values to report that tesa® 7475 PV2 provides similar release values to the former tesa® 7475 version. In 2013, the discontinuance of a primary raw material resulted in tesa needing to make modifications to their tesa® 7475 test tape which had been successfully used for decades in the self-adhesive market. As a result a new version of this test tape called tesa® 7475 PV2 was introduced in 2014. In order to thoroughly compare the former tesa® 7475 with the new version tesa® 7475 PV2, FINAT conducted a 'round-robin' test program including many of the key users of this test tape. The new tape was compared to the former tesa® 7475 version in the FINAT FTM 10 test that measures the release characteristics of silicone coated liners. It helps determine the force required to separate an adhesive front strip from its anti-adhesive backing, or vice-versa, under specified test conditions. FINAT concludes that tesa® 7475 PV2 provides similar release values to the former tesa® 7475 version with most liners having a premium or medium release (where the FTM 10 peel values are < 50g/25mm). For release liners with a highly modified release (FTM 10 peel values > 50g/25mm), a conclusive outcome was not possible due to highly scattered individual release values and a small database of release values (only 2 of the 22 liners tested). In general, some release values indicated lower release forces when measuring with tesa® 7475 PV2 – though that still needs to be examined for each individual case.

“Testing is an essential part of FINAT’s role and one of the cornerstones of the organisation,” comments Hans Lautenschlager, Chairman of the FINAT Sub-committee Test Methods. “We are able to draw on a broad range of industry experts and operations to ensure we are at the forefront of new developments. That knowledge is something we pass on to our members. The freeflow of information and research enables us to support all elements of the industry in a highly informed, effective and accurate way. Specifications for silicone coated liners are often based on FTM 10 in combination with tesa® 7475. It is with this in mind that we recommend a review of the release data obtained with tesa® 7475 PV2 and, if necessary, an update on the release specifications.” The FINAT Sub-committee Test Methods is part of the FINAT Technical Committee thatexists to understand and promote the science and technology of self-adhesive

labelling. It utilises knowledge from a wide range of industry members’ interests to provide an informed body of professional expertise focused on the processes and materials used in the manufacture of self-adhesive labelstock, and their conversion and subsequent application.

HIGH-END LABELS. ONE PASS. ONE PLATFORM. ALL DIGITAL. Xeikon, an innovator in digital color printing technology, today at Labelexpo Europe announced its Fusion Technology, a new concept that brings closer to reality the promise of fully automated, unattended label and packaging production from customer order to delivery. Fusion Technology combines full color production printing with digital embellishment of labels and packaging in a single, one-pass and fully digital production process. Fusion will consist of a series of embellishment modules released over time that are not just put in-line with the press, but are components of an entirely new modular system with the digital front-end taking care of prepress, data processing, color

management and press operation as well as full control and operation of all embellishment modules without manual intervention. Potential digital embellishment modules include hot / cold foiling; screen prints; matte, gloss and structured flood and spot varnish and a digital braille module. “As part of our mission to be a leader in the analog to digital conversion in

the world of labels and packaging, we are excited to be sharing this new concept with the industry,” says Wim Maes, Xeikon CEO. “Our Fusion Technology will offer converters the true flexibility to produce virtually any label or package on demand. It will make instant re-runs of previous jobs easy since all necessary parameters are in a single digital file. More importantly, converters will no longer need to invest in offline embellishment solutions, nor will they incur the time delays and potential for error inherent in both offline and manual processes. We are looking forward to having a dialog with printers and converters moving into the future as we continue to develop Fusion Technology so that we can ensure it hits the mark of what the industry wants and needs: solutions to handle more SKU’s, increasingly complex jobs, ever shorter runs and faster turnaround times.” The concept, and how it works The goal of Fusion Technology is seamless, end-to-end production of labels and packaging that require high quality, fast turnaround, possibly variable information and any enhancements that increase a brand’s shelf appeal – briefly the high-end label and packaging market segment.

25 With Fusion Technology, a print job containing multiple channels defining each aspect of production is dropped into a hot folder and RIP'ed, after which the different channels are sent to the relevant modules including the press – and this without manual intervention. Because every embellishment module

is digital, every single design element can be made variable or personalized, which opens up enormous opportunities for new applications. Depending on the requirements, these digital embellishment modules can be positioned before and/or after the

Xeikon digital five-color press. The resulting configuration produces a digitally printed and embellished label or package in one single pass. The cornerstone of this revolutionary concept is Xeikon’s dry toner electrophotographic five-color printing

press, which is second to none for the high-end label and packaging market since it easily matches offset and flexo benchmark quality. Xeikon’s application-tuned dry toners have been specially developed to meet the requirements of this market in terms

of print quality, color gamut and accuracy, light fastness, food safety and brand protection. The Xeikon X-800, its in-house developed digital frontend, ensures a seamlessly automated digital printing workflow while enabling integration with existing workflows and any market-leading third party applications, such as design packages, web-to-print applications and MIS. “We are developing Fusion Technology to address what we see as a critical emerging need in the labels and packaging market,” Maes adds. “Our initial focus will be on self-adhesive labels where we project significant growth in demand for short-run high-end labels, especially for luxury goods like cosmetics, wine & spirits, and confectionary or for products like pharmaceuticals where these embellishments can also be used in counterfeit prevention. Building a recognizable brand and protecting it is one thing; trying to win share of mind and wallet in a fiercely competitive and increasingly information-cluttered environment is another. We believe Fusion Technology will be a key driver in the future that will help to accomplish both.”

IST METZ is rocking the print world UV rocks“ has been the motto of IST METZ GmbH for this year’s UV DAYS. And UV did rock: more space, more guests, more exhibitors – the seventh edition of UV DAYS ended with a whole set of superlatives.

Visitors from all over the world came to Nuertingen near Stuttgart in Germany where the UV specialist has its headquarters. IST METZ informed about UV lamp technology as well as the increasingly popular LED technology. Both drying technologies were demonstrated with a cartonboard guitar. The world’s largest in-house exhibition of UV technology has beaten its own records once again: 800 guests (2013: 600) could be welcomed by IST METZ at UV DAYS in June. The event comprised several printing demonstrations and lectures, company tours, lab tours and a large exhibition of partners from the printing industry. For this, more exhibitors than ever could be won – 35 companies (2013: 26) took part in UV DAYS. “With around 2,000 square metres in our new building, we had of course the advantage of having more space this year”, said Dirk Jägers, Managing Director of IST METZ GmbH. “Thus we have been able to assign the popular exhibition stands to more companies.”

There was also high demand for the paper guitar, this year’s print gimmick for visitors. The printing of the guitar body, with the drying of inks and varnishes by means of UV light included, was demonstrated live, once with UV lamp technology and once exemplarily with a UV LED system. Furthermore the finishing of the guitar neck with hot-foil embossing was shown, also cured by means of UV light.

Any ordinary smartphone can be pushed into the folded head of the guitar. It is first clamped into a holder produced by the 3D printing process. The top of the head is closed with a cardboard tab. An app for Apple or Android devices developed specifically for the occasion can be loaded. It contains a game in which, similarly to when playing the guitar, the fingers of the left hand have to touch the correct strings to win points. In other words, the cardboard guitar really can be "played" digitally using the app. „We have once again shown at UV DAYS how much potential UV technology offers in combination with new product ideas“, said Dirk Jägers. “Lamp or LED, which technology is the better choice depends on the respective application. UV allows for high-class finishings in packaging printing. There the lamp technology will remain useful. In commercial printing less finishing effects are required, but here the advantage of immediate processing is a strength UV also offers. A retrofitting to LED technology is conceivable in this area. What is certain above all is that the market for UV is growing, and along with it UV DAYS which we will host again in 2017.”

Taiwan Paves the Way to Green Packaging with HP Indigo Taiwan Lamination installs the first HP Indigo 20000 in the Asia Pacific region, outside of Japan, pioneering sustainable digital solutions in the packaging space. Sha Jumari reports. In collaboration with Taiwan Lamination, HP recently hosted a customer and media event in Taiwan in May 2015 to announce the first Asia Pacific installation of the HP Indigo 20000, outside of Japan. The investment in HP Indigo came in response to increased packaging sustainability awareness and demand for high quality, short-runs on varying substrates. The event saw over 200 domestic and international visitors, including Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and even Europe. “Packaging plays a significant role in the environmental sustainability. This is why two years ago, we’ve committed ourselves to adopt technologies that support our philosophy of going green,” said Chen Yung Shun, president, Taiwan Lamination Industries, Inc. During the event, delegates were able to visit Taiwan Lamination’s new facilities, which housed the HP Indigo 20000 digital press. HP also arranged for attendees to visit UM Taiwan and

Gain-How Printing Co., printing companies that have successfully transitioned to digital printing systems. Established in 1977, Taiwan Lamination specializes in flexible packaging for various industries including food and beverage, electronics and medical. Traditionally using rotogravure technology, the Taoyuan-based company invested US$15 million in its new factory, equipping it with technologies and machines that go hand in hand with the company’s commitment to be environmentally responsible, including solvent-free laminating machines and water-based flexo printing technology. “As part of our corporate social responsibility efforts, we want to promote environmentally-conscious printing and ensure that the manufacturing process of packaging materials complies with environmental and safety standards. At the same time, we do not want to compromise quality,” Chen continued. “We first saw the HP Indigo 20000 at Drupa 2012, and were impressed with its high quality digital printing capabilities.” The HP Indigo 20000 is a roll-to-roll digital press that is capable of producing a variety of digital applications, including flexible packaging, labels and shrink sleeves on film or paper. The press’ 76 cm (30”) media width and 1.1 metre repeat length allows it to accommodate most flexible packaging format sizes. The first five installations of the press in the region have all been in Japan. Chen Yung Shun, president, Taiwan Lamination Industries, Inc.

“Taiwan Lamination is our first customer outside of Japan to install the HP Indigo 20000 press. We installed the machine several months back; it is up-and-running, in full commercial production, and we're here to celebrate that,” said Roy Eitan, director and General Manager, HP Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. HP’s proprietary Indigo technology for labels has been around since 1995. Over the last 20 years HP has remained the market leader, selling more machines in the narrow web space and gaining significant digital market share. Taking the existing Indigo technology, HP increased the format by 2.5 times and presented printers in the packaging space with a digital solution for mass production in wide-web folding cartons and packaging. This came in the form of the HP Indigo 20000 and 30000, which was first launched at Drupa 2012, signifying HP’s dedication to the packaging market.

exhibiting growth in every country and evolving, due to shifting demands. Demands of the end-users and brandowners have progressed to requiring shorter runs and more variety, flavours, sizes etc (SKU’s), which align with the capabilities of digital printing. At the same time, companies that are privately owned are being taken over by the second generation, who are beginning to innovate with digital solutions. “This trend is exactly the same in Asia Pacific. In Taiwan especially, where we have a strong digital label market, there is the same packaging penetration, ratio and speed, as in markets in Europe and North America,” Eitan continued. “The brands all have the same needs to be more specific and have more versions. Between localization, customization and personalization; ultimately the brand owner is developing more SKUs.”

“We forecast a strong double digit growth for HP year after year. The key thing here is not our growth; it is our customer’s growth. Our business model is built upon customers growing their print volumes. We’re very proud to say that in packaging our customers are growing their business by 30% year after year,” said Eitan. “There’s a huge group of people who can take our product and do things with it that we have never even thought of before. This is why this event is so important to us. Our job is to empower as many customers as we can with our technology, by enabling them to share ideas and take them to the next level,” Eitan continued. Transforming Industries Packaging is a key strategic growth engine for HP. In Asia, the middleincome market is growing. As people are getting better jobs and the minimum wage increases, so does their desire to spend money and consume. Asia displays the fastest

growing domestic consumption in the world, and with that, a rapid growth of packaging. The event is just one of HP’s efforts to drive the digital revolution in the packaging industry: “This phenomena is worldwide, not just Taiwan. Our ultimate aim is to help our customers transition into digital packaging,” said Eitan. The evolution of the packaging industry is the same situation faced by commercial printing many years back. Although commercial printing still takes up a large share of the market, it is slowing in terms of growth. Packaging, on the other hand, is

Chen explained further: “There is a serious bottleneck in the current market and we are now taking in more short runs. Previously we produced packaging that can be used over the next 10 years. In the current market, one packaging design is meant for one year of use only. In addition, our clients now have a wide variety of products and require an array of packaging designs. With the old gravure method, this new trend becomes very expensive.” “With HP, we easily solved this problem for our clients. We can even print one piece of substrate. Our clients are very happy with our new service,” Chen added, extolling the main benefit of installing the HP Indigo 20000 press. “We can also confidently tell our clients that they only need to wait 30 minutes for us to provide a finished packaging. With traditional gravure, this would not be possible at all.”

AFTA AGA ALA • SEPT 2015

30 “We’re all about transforming industries. When you transform an industry, you do not do it alone. You do it with other partners in the market. Your partners can be in various forms, such as additional vendors, software companies and finishing companies, but they can also be your customers,” Eitan continued. “We partner with customers who are most forward-thinking, innovative, and committed to transform the industry and this is exactly what we find in Taiwan Lamination. It is a very traditional business, but with foresight to innovate digitally. HP is right behind them, empowering them with our solutions. This is what we do at HP.” HP Delivers Quality, Productivity, Environmental Benefits Nick Price, General Manager for the Labels and Packaging Segment of HP Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, broke down the core advantages of going digital: “The main benefit of HP Indigo is the print quality on almost all substrates. HP Indigo presses are able to deliver the same quality as gravure and offset technologies, often even better when factoring in the conventional print defects such as dot-gain, misregistration and colour shifts.” “Secondly we provide the productivity gains. Printing on a HP Indigo cuts down a lot of time and cost in the workflow. There are no plates or cylinders to manufacture and once the digital file is approved it can be printed immediately. In places like China where the minimum wages are increasing, and in Japan, where the wages are high, digital printing reduces man hours considerably and enables you to be more competitive in delivering your finished goods.

Speed to market is also a huge factor to consider, where digital printing can help reduce this from weeks to days, or even hours” Price continued. As well as the HP Indigo hardware advantages, there are additional software such as the HP Smartstream Mosaic that enables thousands of designs to be created and printed automatically from a surprisingly limited number of original designs. This same technology was used for Coca-Cola’s famed Extraordinary Campaign in Israel. One of the key benefits of digital packaging printing is the compliancy to environmental sustainability. Packaging production can be a very high-emission industry, especially when using conventional gravure technologies that involve machinery and chemicals. Governments are also making a push for environmental practices and implementing stricter regulations. HP Indigo’s low-emission solutions best conforms to this. “There is now much more demand in Asia Pacific to be environmentallyfriendly. Companies have talked about it for years, but now governments are acting and business owners are having to respond. But the largest push is coming from International Brands who want to send the right message to their consumers. Digital Packaging can deliver that” explained Price. “You are removing a lot of chemicals, polymers, metals and VOC emissions from the process, reducing the environmental footprint significantly.”

The Taiwanese Way Creativity and innovation are two qualities not foreign to Taiwan. In 2014, Bloomberg awarded the island among the top 10 most innovative in the world, and the first in patent activity. “Taiwan is an interesting market. It's a perfect combination – Chinese sensibilities in manufacturing and speed, harmonizing with Japan’s attention to detail and eye for subtleties. With that combination, it is creating a winning formula, in manufacturing, technology and, of course, packaging,” observed Price. In terms of product, Price added that Taiwan has comparable aesthetics to Japan and closely follows the trends there. The island has similar products and unique offerings that come with strong and innovative ideas with its packaging. In Taiwan, HP partners with Grandtech to expand its domestic sales reach and first line support. Taiwan’s economy is highly dependent on international trade and export, but its print industry remains largely domesticated. That may soon change - in May 2014, Taiwan opened up its printing industry to China under a service trade pact. Due to China’s strict constraints on commercial printing and publishing, most of the focus has been on the packaging segment. Packaging has a regional reach, as more Taiwanese companies set up base in Southeast Asia and China.

BOBST technology meets highest demands of HD flexo Packaging has long since been intended not only to protect and transport goods, but equally to present them. A high-quality printed image on a material with a highclass look has been proven to more encourage people to buy the goods than a comparable product with lowerquality packaging. Consequently, reliable, consistent quality is a decisive criterion for print buyers. Providing vibrant colours, smooth transition to zero, and excellent image details, high definition flexo can well compete with gravure and even offset whilst at the same time enusuring efficient production over a wide range of run lenghts. The 20SIX CI section: sophisticated technology for top print quality Flexo printing is a highly sensitive process, particularly as regards impression setting and ink transfer. This means that all the components involved in printing must be designed for precision in the µm range – both mechanically and in terms of control engineering. Thanks to servo drive technology and high-precision mechanical guides, the F&K 20SIX can handle impression adjustment, i.e. the setting of the anilox roller relative to the plate cylinder and of the plate cylinder to the

substrate, with a resolution of 1 µm. Special calibration devices for parallel positioning of the printing units likewise operate with an accuracy of 1 µm. However, this precision only fully benefits the print quality if, having once been set, the perfect printing position is maintained throughout the entire process. Additional technical measures are taken to guarantee this. With models featuring large widths or long repeats, for example, the central impression cylinder is driven directly, i.e. entirely without gears and backlash, ensuring highest possible register accuracy while at the same offering the advantage of being completely maintenance-free. In addition to temperature control of the central cylinder, the F&K 20SIX offers an optional temperature compensation system (standard with smartGPS™) to ensure that plate cyl-

inders and anilox rollers remain in the optimum printing position even if the dimensions of the printing unit frames change as a result of temperature fluctuations. Sensors permanently monitor the temperature of the printing unit frames, immediately sending correction signals to the positioning drives of the plate cylinders and the anilox rollers in the event of temperature changes. An automatic impression correction system compensates for decreasing ink transfer as production speed increases by dynamically increasing impression. Thanks to the rigid design of the whole CI section, the mechanical precision of the print unit adjustment components and servo drive technology for impression setting, with the 20SIX, only minimum corrections in the micron range are required. This results in minimum dot gain and consistent print quality throughout the production run for both halftone and solids ensuring that the potential of HD flexo is fully exploited at all speeds.

34 tion related set-up process to the plate mounting stage, and performs it fully automatically without any operator input required. Not only reduces smartGPS™ waste to almost zero but also provides the highest possible accuracy and repeatability for impression and register set-up.

smartGPS™: profitable production, ultimate process consistency Almost all machine manufacturers today offer systems with semi- or fully automatic impression and registration adjustment. All these systems work onpress, i.e. ‘abuse’ the press for makeready. With the smartGPS™, Bobst is offering a system that so far is unique on the market. It is a system that shifts the entire impression and registra-

Since smartGPS™ provides the correct impression setting right from the start, the press can be immediately accelerated to production speed providing perfect print quality literally from the first impression. This means that there are no issues with differing drying characteristics of inks at various speeds causing problems with consistent ink lay-down. Especially with fast drying inks at set-up speed problems relate to ink being slow enough to not pre-dry on the plate at set-up and yet being fast enough to dry at a production speed. No optical system that does the set-up on-press can overcome this without generating large amounts of waste. Conclusion In times of growing demands on print quality, there is automatically also an increase in the demands on the perfor-

mance of a printing press in terms of consistent quality with repeat orders, high resolution of the printed image, and the processing of thin materials. To be able to make use of the enormous potential of HD flexo this requires a printing press that is capable of printing finest dots and consistent solids throughout the production run. This can only be achieved with a press that with every mechanical and electrical detail, is uncompromisingly designed to deliver superior print results.

Epson launches new label printer for manufacturing sector The unveiling of the new ColorWorks C7510 commercial label printer at MTA2015 signals a growing demand for colour-on-demand labeling for the manufacturing sector. Sha Jumari reports. As manufacturing is increasingly strengthening the Asian economy, the need for on-demand colour labeling for the sector grows. In response to this growing demand, Epson showcased the new ColorWorks C7510 commercial label printer at the recently concluded Manufacturing and Technology Asia 2015 (MTA2015) conference in Singapore. The ColorWorks C7510 is Epson’s ondemand colour label printer that uses Epson’s proprietary PrecisionCore thin film piezo print head technology. Designed for continuous printing, the C7510 is currently only available in the Asia region. It is able to print a maximum of 300 mm/5 at resolutions of 600 dpi. Users can potentially

save up to 50% on labeling costs while increasing productivity. The ColorWorks C7510 is purported to run twice as fast as older printers.

“We feel there is a big market for Colour-on-Demand (COD) labelling here in the region, because of the obvious benefits in cost reduction and productivity. While manufacturing production in China has slowed, ASEAN has grown, with foreign direct investments in 2013 exceeding that of China by 9.2%,” said Ng Ngee Khiang, general manager, Epson Southeast Asia. “Taken as a whole, ASEAN could be considered the seventh largest economy in the world with a combined gross domestic product of US$2.4 Trillion. It’s the fourth largest exporting region accounting for 7% of global exports. Furthermore, manufacturers in US and Europe are finding a need to move their production closer to Asian consumer markets and are seeking to plant their flags in Singapore. These are all opportunities for COD Labelling market to grow,” Ng continued.

39 One of the most pertinent impacts of COD labeling is the ability of manufacturers to print multiple colour label variations easily, improving product identification and productivity. Users also do not have to stock up on expensive pre-printed colour labels that may never be used. This would especially benefit manufacturers and suppliers that are required to adhere to the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. Prior to COD, they would have to rely on the lengthy system of ordering preprinted colour labels, loading them onto black and white labels, and ensuring every label was correctly sized. COD labeling will reduce this entire process to a single step, effectively cutting down on time, labour and costs. Industries that adhere to GHS standards include chemical, oil and gas. Other sectors that can benefit COD labeling include the pharmaceutical and food packaging industries. Ng added that small and medium enterprises are

also showing interest in COD in order to reduce costs of third part label supplies. “Colour-on-Demand printing provides a number of benefits for any business, not just manufacturing,” explained Ng. “The most prominent is the reduction of overhead costs. Manufacturers no longer need to deal with the cost of pre-printed labels, which might end up being unused and wasted, and SMEs do not have to deal with third party

label suppliers who, very often, have a minimum order requirement.” According to Epson, a new industrial grade colour label printer that caters for higher print volume users will be launched in the region in the third quarter of the year. Ng concluded: “This new model is 3 times faster than current model and even more reliable. We are confident it will further improve the productivity and efficiency of businesses significantly.”

42 pharmaceutical industries, track, trace and protect their products.” Equipment, systems and services premières Foil Unwinder+ is a system which sets new industry standards for foil use optimization, and hence cost reduction. Available from July as an option on MASTERFOIL 106 PR hotfoil stamping presses, the unit features a number of intelligent processes that together ensure the most accurate foil advance with the least possible stress on the web. By constantly selfadjusting during production, Foil Unwinder + allows the press to run with a gap as small as 2mm between impressions on the foil, regardless of running speed, reel size or reel width. By doing this, Foil Unwinder+ can reduce foil consumption by as much as 50%, depending on the layout of the job. As pressure grows on packaging manufacturers to be more efficient, carton makers are increasingly interested in options for the automated in-line separation of cartons. The new VISIONCUT 106 LER diecutter helps users cut labor costs, enhance product quality and increase productivity by removing the need for the hand stripping of waste. This completely new IIIB format press has a cam driven platen and dynamic optical lateral register control for exceptional accuracy and production consistency. The fully automatic Smart Feeder on the VISIONCUT 106 LER delivers incredibly reliable sheet feeding, even at its top speed of 8’000 sheets per hour. This not only increases productivity, but also frees up the machine operator to concentrate on quality, rather than on getting sheets through the machine. Launched last July, the 7’000 sheet per hour, IIIB format NOVACUT 106 ER blank separating die-cutter complements the VISIONCUT by giving carton makers worldwide a way to access in-line blank separation technology. The BOBST Angle Lock® blanking tool system incorporated into the NOVACUT 106 ER means that, regardless of where they are in the world, users can blank separate jobs. This is because Angle Lock® blanking tools can either be supplied

directly by BOBST, or made inplant using standard components. By providing customers with first class tooling technology that enhances the performance of the NOVACUT, BOBST is supporting those markets where access to good quality tooling is difficult, if not impossible. Both the NOVACUT 106 ER and VISIONCUT 106 LER can be converted from blanking mode to full sheet delivery in a matter of minutes, giving users who are new to blank separation the ability to build up a portfolio of blanked work while running existing jobs. EXPERTCODE is the first full market launch from the BOBST digital printing initiative and addresses anti-counterfeiting and traceability as well as the customization and versioning of packs. EXPERTCODE gives packaging manufacturers the ability to digitally print individualized codes, text or graphics, off-line onto blanks or onto already folded and glued cartons, and to do so with high resolution, at high speed and with instant verification. The system brings together the extensive BOBST research and development into digital printing, its experience in high speed, high accuracy optical recognition systems gained through BOBST Registron® systems, and innovative technology from trusted industry partners. Visitors to COMPETENCE 15 also saw a number of BOBST service products designed to increase productivity, reduce costs or ensure safety. These included a new Platen Conditioning service which removes the oxidation that can build up on beams, chases and platens, and protects

the machine against further corrosion. The service can reduce makeready times on die-cutters by between 25% and 50% and the cutting force needed to run a job by up to 30%. Complimenting the premières were a number of new product and finance solutions from BOBST partners, including Deutsche Leasing, Hunkeler, H.B. Fuller, Marbach GmbH, Henkel, Kurz, Hinderer+Mühlich GmbH, Lasertec, Baumerhhs, SGM and UEI Group. Formatted as a trade show within COMPETENCE 15, having access to these partners meant that visitors were able to get the latest information and exchange ideas with leading suppliers to the industry. Complementary conference program Among the presentations in the conference program at COMPETENCE 15 was a talk by Charlotte D’Aulnois, of coaching and consultancy company SAPHIRDNS, on how to boost business performance using neuroscience and sports coaching. Differentiating Power of the new ThermoFlexX 60 ThermoFlexX announces global launch of the ThermoFlexX 60 digital flexo plate imager, taking on the philosophy of ‘openness’. Sha Jumari reports. imaging system, which enables output speeds of 12 square metres an hour at 2400 dpi, making these two models the fastest flexo imagers in the world. Thus far, three installations of the ThermoFlexX 80 are already in full production in France, Algeria and Egypt. “We listen continuously to what customers and other industry players say they want from a plate imaging device and this feedback steers much of the development work we carry out here in Ypres. This is why we have dedicated so much research effort into output quality and why we have recently developed the ability to change resolution on-the-fly on the ThermoFlexX 80 and 60 models,” said Lievens.

With the theme ‘Open Technology, Open Mind’, ThermoFlexX unveiled the new ThermoFlexX 60 digital flexo plate imager at an open house at its factory in Ypres, Belgium, on 17 June 2015. The ThermoFlexX 60 is lauded to be the most advanced 1067 x 1524 mm flexo imager on the market. “Our commitment to the flexo industry and our determination to push forward the boundaries of what can be achieved in the field of plate imaging has resulted in several major breakthroughs which have positioned ThermoFlexX as a leading manufacturer in this sector,” said Christophe Lievens, director sales and marketing, basysPrint and ThermoFlexX. “We focus very much on having an open technology so our machines can integrate into any environment

and workflow,” added Lievens. “Over the last two years, we standardised all our systems to have a completely open interface, open connectivity and multiple resolutions.” The imager boasts the same technical specs as the ThermoFlexX 80 which was launched first in 2014. This includes the ability to fit a dual-head

Unique Engine Features The imaging head consists of three independent modules: the motor, laser and optics. The flexible design enables easier service interventions, simplifying replacements and service and hardware upgrading. A lens cleaning feature provides constant airflow to avoid carbon rests from sticking on the lens. This improves imaging quality and lessens lens cleaning interventions.

Opportunity for Digital Flexo CtP While offset CtP markets still take up a large share of the market, it is showing an overall decline. Flexo CtP, on the other hand, has an expected CAGR of 4%. As printers are beginning to invest in their own pre-press, there is a renewal market of early adopters.

The ThermoFlexX 60 also features automatic optical calibration and focus setting. The imager will automatically select the correct resolution depending upon the job being sent by the workflow and alter the optics accordingly. The imager supports resolutions from the wide range of 2100 dpi to 5080 dpi. Additionally, its MultiPlate front-end software allows multiple resolutions to be produced on one plate, significantly cutting down on time and wastage. Minimising Waste and Optimising Automation Automation is a key word within the ThermoFlexX imaging process. From the automatic calibration system that guarantees jobs are always imaged under optimum conditions, to the ability for the operator to load and unload plates at the touch of a button, the imagers strive to keep wastage to a miminum. One of the main causes of plate damage comes from handling large plates manually. To minimise this occurrence, ThermoFlexX created a mobile table called Flextray, which can be adjusted easily to transport and feed plates into the guiding system on the imager. The advanced automatic clamping system, combined with the slow drum rotation feature, ensures that plate mounting is straightforward and accurate. The creation of a hybrid drum that enables plates to be held by either vacuum or magnets means that customers can expose standard polymer flexo plates or steel-backed letterpress plates. ThermoFlexX has developed a vacuum slider facility that allows the operator to cut off vacuum to areas

of the drum not mounted, simply by moving a slider to the edge of the plate. This function is automated on the new ThermoFlexX 80 and 60. Eliminating the need to apply special tape, or cutting plates to fit the unused part of the drum, means that customers can easily fit and expose plate off-cuts that would otherwise be thrown away. Screening Technologies To promote superior quality in flexo presses, ThermoFlexX developed two software solutions: ThermoFlexX Hybrid Screening and ThermoFlexX Surface Screening. The flexo process struggles to reduce the minimum dot sufficiently, leading to visible hard-edges. The ThermoFlexX Hybrid Screening alleviates this by allowing the production of small, consistent dots that significantly reduces the risk of the ‘grainy effect’ on the final printed product, especially in fade to zero vignettes. This solution produces a print quality that is comparable to offset but with the lower production costs of flexo. The ThermoFlexX Surface Screening involves roughening the plate surface with a high frequency pattern. This produces higher density and smoother solids, along with sharp line-work to avoid the ‘halo’ effect. With the surface screening technology, barcodes of the highest readability can be created. The technology work in combination with ‘flat top dot’ technology and is executed by ThermoFlexX’s software that can be stand-alone or integrated as a background function on any workflow.

The limited CtP suppliers in the market currently meant there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of functionality - an opportunity ThermoFlexX took advantage of: “It’s an obvious direction for Xeikon Prepress. We’re a technology-driven company with 20 years of experience in CtP manufacturing,” said Lievens. “Of course, Xeikon’s large digital division has a lot of foothold with customers in labels, so immediately we saw the possibilities to sell small machines, and that’s how we stepped into this market,” continued Lievens. Europe and the US are saturated markets, while Asia is showing signs of growth. Lievens added that China is a difficult market due to high taxes and stiff competition from its domestic CtP manufacturers. Brand owners today constantly have to compete in product visibility and shelf appeal, in the most cost-effective manner. The pressure is on for printers and trade shops to deliver that quality and consistency, within the smallest delay. The challenge for system suppliers is to provide solutions and even anticipate these trends. “Our commitment to the flexo industry and our determination to push forward the boundaries of what can be achieved in the field of plate imaging has resulted in several major breakthroughs which have positioned ThermoFlexX as a leading manufacturer in this sector,” Lievens concluded. “We expect interest to remain high, with a peak around Labelexpo in September when we will be showing some exciting new developments!”

Hybrid Software launches Cloudflow RIP The new Cloudflow RIP can work as a standalone or as part of the Cloudflow workflow to rev up production efficiency for the packaging and label markets. By Sha Jumari. Hybrid Software has announced a major addition to its Cloudflow suite of software for the packaging and label markets following the development of the Cloudflow RIP. Released in conjunction with the ThermoFlexX 60 machine launch in Yper, Belgium, the software was demonstrated with the ThermoFlexX digital flexo plate imagers available on-site. The new Cloudflow RIP supports flexo platemaking, providing sophisticated screening and calibration control facilities. In addition to regular AM and FM screening, the RIP also supports object-based screening, enabling users to have full control over the ripping process. “Being an integral part of our comprehensive Cloudflow suite of products, the RIP can take full advantage of the distributed architecture of Cloudflow to achieve extremely efficient productivity,” said Guido Van der Schueren, chairman, Hybrid Software. “As with all of our Cloudflow products the new RIP runs on the server and the user can control it via a web browser.”

Hybrid Software’s Cloudflow RIP supports native PDF 1.6 files and is available in two modes, either standalone or in a Cloudflow workflow. In the standalone version the RIP is supplied with its own HTML UI, allowing the user to set up presets and then run jobs. A built-in TIFF viewer is provided to inspect output. In a Cloudflow environment, the RIP runs as part of an operating workflow, handling functions such as routing files based on metadata and obtaining information from other systems. It can easily integrate with other Hybrid Software products such as Proofscope and PACKZFlow. Cloudflow is a workflow system for running centralised graphics production work on a private computing cloud. Cloudflow interfaces can be controlled from any web browser, or even a tablet. “This means you can use it wherever there’s a connection, such as at the airport. Additionally, your customers can have access to the software wherever they are as well,” added

Jan Ruysschaert, managing director, Hybrid Software NV. Many print service providers have multiple file servers or several production locations in order to keep up with customer demands. This results in difficulty in managing production workloads and keeping track of digital files. Cloudflow aims to resolve this by centralising the production process within one system, the “cloud”, which can be accessed from any location at all through a browser. Developed in HTML5, Cloudflow has a clean, straightforward interface. The system’s Cloudflow Workspace provides user security, file management, and total control over all workflows and production. One of the more interesting features of the software is that printers can send request approval to their clients from the program. As opposed to send files over email which might end up confusing, customers will be able to discuss and make changes on the design on the cloud software itself, minimising potential confusion. Hybrid also demonstrated the latest version of PACKZ, its professional PDF editor for packaging and label workflows. The software can be fully integrated within the Cloudflow environment. In version 3.0, the PACKZ Warp function allows users to create grids based on based on numerical information or technical drawings. This can be used for conical warping, disc shaped metal cans and shrink sleeves and the results can be seen instantly on screen in live 3D. PACKZ has a direct link with IC3D Suite for real-time 3D simulation of shrink sleeves, folding cartons and labels

Digital Goes Heavy Metal The metallic finish is gaining popularity as new options promises to cut down on processes and open opportunities for digital printing. Sha Jumari explores.

is fused onto the media, the pigment particles lay parallel to the media, allowing for higher reflection of light from the pigment. This achieves a high sheen for a true metallic appearance.

The true metallic look with a high sheen has long been a coveted finish, especially for this region. Beyond exuding a luxurious feel, Asian markets deem the metallic look, gold especially, to convey prosperity and success. From labels and packaging, book covers and greeting cards, its uses are wide-ranging. Today’s climate calls for short-run, on-demand and personalised printing; applications that all fit with digital printing. Conventional methods of producing the metallised surface include offset, screen printing and hot foil stamping. These methods are often time-consuming and laborious. There are now new digital innovations that aim to significantly shorten processes to better address the needs of the market. The first half of the year witnessed Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific unveiling its latest production colour press, the Color

1000i, a first in the industry to offer both gold and silver dry inks. Aimed at the high-end professional printing market, the production press uses ellipsoid-shaped toner inks with flat reflective pigments. When the image

“Having the metallic ink directly within the digital printing machine helps cut out processes. The gold and silver inks widen up the creative capabilities and applications, such as business cards, certificates, photo applications, and direct mail,” said Yamazaki Toru, general manager, production go-to-market, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific.

51

A significant feature of the dry inks is that the reflective pigments do not allow light to pass through. This prevents the colour of the underlying media from showing through to allow printing on any media, including those with printed text and even darkcoloured paper. “The inks can be integrated into personalised communication. It boosts customer perception of quality through eye-catching prints and can facilitate premium customisation that will help the consumer feel more connected to the brand,” Yamazaki continued. “The advantage of metallic printing is the emotional impact,” concurred Junichi Arai, Operating Officer,

Konica Minolta Business Solutions Japan. “The role of print in general is changing, where IT media is replacing paper communication. However, metallic printed communication has the ability to bring out the true emotion of the message - better than email or any online media. From that point of view, metallic printing has a good paper- or print-only role. That’s where the value of metallic print is,” said Arai. Konica Minolta announced that it will be placing the spotlight on the JETVarnish 3D and iFOIL at the upcoming IGAS 2015 in Japan to address the needs of the graphic communication industry in the region.

The iFOIL module utilises a new digital process that can produce hot foiling without the use of dies, plates or make-ready. This process can create new customisation applications not available through traditional spot UV coating methods due to the increased throughput for flat spot UV jobs and 3D raised effects. Another foiling method that incorporates digital print is the DM-Liner by Kurz Group, recently debuted at Xeikon Café Packaging Innovations 2015. Through a process called Digital Metal, the DM Liner combines digital printing with coating and metal-transfer to create metallised surfaces. The printed product can also be overprinted with UV or digital printing toner, to allow metallic colours besides gold or silver, to be produced. Xeikon worked closely with Kurz to develop the solution to process high gloss or holographic digital metal foils using toner: “The trick is that our toner works together with a specific foil developed by Kurz. Our toner basically acts as a glue for the foil, that can be printed on to the material in any shape at all. Spaces that do not require a metallic finish are masked with a varnish,” explained Frank Jacobs, marketing communications manager, Xeikon. Since pre-printing with the toner is digitally controlled, making it possible to include personalised content, serial numbers or individualised design elements: “This is a unique way to protect from counterfeiting as a brand protection feature,” added Jacobs

Digital printing press for corrugated board The second beta-testing site to receive a BOBST digital printing press for corrugated board is the Schumacher Packaging plant in Ebersdorf, Germany, where the installation is already well under way and where production will start at the end of this month. well giving access to a large number of mid-volume opportunities. And all this is delivered at high speed, with close to offset quality. It means that corrugated packaging manufacturers will be able to enter all sorts of existing and new markets.”

The Ebersdorf site, in central Germany, is the central hub of Schumacher Packaging GmbH, which has thirteen sites across Germany, Poland and the Netherlands. Björn Schumacher, Managing Director of Schumacher Packaging GmbH, said, “We are very excited about the possibilities this BOBST press offers for opening up new market areas to us. We continuously invest in high-performance, state-ofthe-art machines in all our production areas, which is one of the reasons we have been able to grow our business significantly over the past few years. Designed and built in Switzerland, the BOBST digital printing press for corrugated board prints images, graphics, codes and text, which can vary from sheet to sheet. Production speeds can reach 200 meters per minute, with a maximum sheet width of 1.3 meters. Applications include serialization, personalized packs, versioned packaging, customized

corrugated products, and medium to short-runs of conventional boxes and displays. Incorporating Kodak Stream Inkjet Technology, the BOBST press delivers four-color digital print directly onto corrugated board and print run lengths can be from a single sheet to several thousand. The collaboration between technology leaders BOBST and Kodak has produced a digital press which exhibits a combination of print quality, speed and versatility which will allow converters to better respond to an increasingly dynamic market. Jean-Pascal Bobst, CEO of Bobst Group, said, “The print technology choices that corrugated packaging manufacturers have had available to them, up until now, have determined the markets they can serve. Our new solution changes all this because one printing press can open up a huge range of markets, from long runs of boxes featuring variable data to very short runs of bespoke packs and displays – as

The Kodak Stream Inkjet Technology used in the BOBST digital printing press has a number of characteristics that make it ideal for corrugated packaging production. This continuous inkjet printing technology provides greater throw distance compared to dropon-demand inkjet enabling print on a wide range of substrate thicknesses; its high speed continuous jetting makes the press more responsive and so able to print variable data at faster speeds; and the technology uses waterbased inks which are food compliant, compatible with a wide range of coated and uncoated substrates and more environmentally friendly. “This product represents the first generation of solutions from the Strategic Partnership we announced with BOBST in 2013,” said Philip Cullimore, Sr. VP of Kodak, and President, Enterprise Inkjet Systems Division. “ Philippe Milliet, Head of Business Unit Sheet-fed, added, “Brand owners want more flexibility, especially at the late stage, as well as equal or better print quality. They also aim to increase engagement with consumers, while at the same time keeping costs under control. Our digital solution gives our customers the ability to deliver all that using one machine.”

Shanghai Zidan Food Packaging & Printing opts for EVO XD from KBA-Flexotecnica Shanghai Zidan Food Packaging & Printing ordered an EVO XD CI flexo web press from KBAFlexotecnica after an intensive selection process. The flexo experts at Zidan based their decision primarily on the innovative press’ technical winning features. KBA China’s great dedication to this project proved successful in the end. The Chinese sales and service company that belongs to Koenig & Bauer Group delivered a large-format Rapida 142 sheetfed press to Zidan Food Packaging & Printing in 2012 and has an excellent reputation with Chinese packaging printers. For KBA-Flexotecnica the order signals a successful comeback in the Chinese market which still holds considerable growth potential for flexo printing compared to gravure that dominates today. Zidan Food Packaging & Printing is a leading supplier of sophisticated packaging in the Chinese market and was founded in 1996 by the Zijiang Group. The Group made a name for itself in flexo printing very early on and sets the standards in China with regard to this printing process. Zidan’s main products include food packaging, folding carton, corrugated packaging, shopping bags and even packaging for toys. Internationally renowned enterprises, such as KFC, McDonald’s, Kraft, Phillips, Sony, GE and GM, are just some of its longstanding customers. The company is keeping a close eye on offering the highest level of quality coupled with sustainable, environmentally friendly production as it paves the way for growth. Zidan owns an extensive press fleet in order to fulfil its customers’ challenging demands. Along with a Rapida 142 installed in 2012, the packaging experts ordered a high-tech Rapida 106 medium-format press with nine printing units and a coating unit at

Print China in Dongguan in April 2015. The company previously used web presses for flexo printing from another manufacturer. Zidan aims to expand its capacities for fast-food paper packaging with this recent order for an EVO XD from KBA-Flexotecnica. The decision in favour of an eightcolour EVO XD CI press with coater was made after in-depth technical comparisons to a press from another German manufacturer and visits to see

the press in action in Asia and Europe. The new EVO XD which was launched only a few years ago is currently the most installed press from KBAFlexotecnica. A key unique feature compared to competitors’ presses is its highly efficient drying system codeveloped with a team of experts from Milan University. The press thus meets even the highest demands in terms of quality with a high web speed of 500m/min (1,641ft/min). Its innovative operating concept facilitates

62 minimal start-up times when changing jobs. The patented auto impression (AIF ) and user-friendly register control keep start-up waste to a minimum. Lu Weida, general manager of Zidan: “We are following our strategy of achieving the highest level of quality using a sustainable production process with this new press. We are convinced that we made the right choice by ordering the EVO XD.” The new EVO XD is expected to come on stream at Zidan in the first quarter of 2016. Together with field technicians from Italy, local service staff from KBA China who have already been thoroughly trained in this printing process will be involved in the installation. KBA China’s experienced service team will be on-hand following commissioning to ensure that Zidan and all new flexo customers receive fast and professional service on-site. KBA China already has a longstanding good reputation with offset users.

After signing the contract: (r-l) Zhang Peng, sales manager flexo at KBAChina; Andreas Dallavalle, sales director KBA-Flexotecnica; Claudio Bisogni, CEO KBA-Flexotecnica; Lu Weida, general director Shanghai Zidan Food Packaging & Printing; He Congyou, chief engineer and deputy general director; He Hongjian, production director (all Zidan) and Andreas Friedrich, general manager web press sales and service KBA-China

Flint Group develops direct engravable plate for pad printing Water washable, steel based nyloprint® WS WD with improved reproduction characteristics for higher print quality For many years Flint Group has offered a broad range of letterpress printing plates. Ongoing research work is the foundation for highly specialised and sophisticated products which meet all customer requirements. Now, the company has developed a new water washable, steel based printing plate: nyloprint® WS WD. With its optimised reproduction characteristics, the new plate shows significantly improved print quality. Due to the more precise reproduction of the smallest elements, the new printing plate is ideally suited for security printing as well as tubes, cups and can printing. Especially in these demanding segments, high print quality and a low dot gain are essential. The new letterpress plate, nyloprint® WS WD, allows a virtual 1:1 copy of the digital data onto the printing plate, resulting in a more detailed image definition of the relief. In printing, an extraordinary tonal range combined with a higher density can be achieved. Excellent results are achieved with LED exposure on Flint Group’s nyloprint® NExT Exposure unit. However, the new plate can be exposed with every standard tube type and processed with both plushes and brushes. Extensive field tests show very positive customer feedback: Especially improved reproduction characteristics as well as excellent print results have been reported extremely positive.
